essay on importance of namaz

Salah (prayer) is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and holds great significance in the life of a practicing Muslim. It is a form of worship and connecting with Allah (God). There are many ahadith that mention the importance and benefits of salah for us as Muslims. The Prophet SAW:

Importance Of Salah According to Hadiths

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

Indeed the first deed by which a servant will be called to account on the Day of Resurrection is his Salat. If it is complete, he is successful and saved, but if it is defective, he has failed and lost…

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 413

…So if something is deficient in his obligatory (prayers) then the Lord, Mighty and Sublime says: 'Look! Are there any voluntary (prayers) for my worshipper?' So with them, what was deficient in his obligatory (prayers) will be completed. Then the rest of his deeds will be treated like that."

"Whoever attends Isha (prayer) in congregation, then he has (the reward as if he had) stood half of the night. And whoever prays Isha and Fajr in congregation, then he has (the reward as if he had) spend the entire night standing (in prayer)."

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 221

"No Salat is more burdensome to the hypocrites than the Fajr (dawn) prayer and the 'Isha' (night) prayer; and if they knew their merits, they would come to them even if they had to crawl to do so." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Riyad as-Salihin 1073

"The Prophet was asked: 'Which deed is the best?' So he said: 'Salat in the beginning of its time.'"

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 170

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "The two Rak'ah before the dawn (Fajr) prayer are better than this world and all it contains." [Muslim]

Riyad as-Salihin 1102

Whoever persists in performing twelve Rak’ah from the Sunnah, a house will be built for him in Paradise: four before the Zuhr, two Rak’ah after Zuhr, two Rak’ah after Maghrib, two Rak’ah after the ‘Isha’ and two Rak’ah before Fajr.’ Grade: Hasan (Darussalam)

Sunan Ibn Majah 1140

"Whoever observes the practice of performing four Rak'ah before Zuhr prayer and four after the Zuhr prayer, Allah will shield him against the Fire (of Hell). [Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi].

Riyad as-Salihin 1116

"The key to Paradise is Salat, and the key to Salat is Wudu'."

Grade: Hasan (Darussalam) Jami` at-Tirmidhi 4

"Between disbelief and faith is abandoning the Salat."

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2618

These hadiths highlight how important it is to perform salah as a fundamental act of worship in Islam. They also remind us of the many spiritual and worldly benefits that come with performing it with sincerity and focus.

Importance Of Salah According to the Quran:

It is mentioned in the Quran:

Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing,...

(Quran, 29:45)

In another place Quran says:

Successful indeed are the believers: those who humble themselves in prayer;

(Quran, 23:1-2)

Here Quran describes believer:

O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allāh is with the patient.

(Quran, 2:153)

These references from the Quran and Hadith underscore the profound importance of Salah in Islam, emphasizing its role as a spiritual practice that fosters a deep connection with Allah and promotes discipline, community, and personal growth among Muslims worldwide.

Importance of Namaz

by AsmaArshad | Oct 25, 2015

Salat or Namaz is Islam’s most necessary and complete arrangement of love. The importance of Namaz for Muslims is judged by how it is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Five times Salah to ALLAH was made mandatory after Isra and Miraj of Prophet (S.A.W.), a year before Hijra on the 27th of Rajab, and in the first year of Hijra, the first Azaan was called by Hazrat Bilal (R.A).

As the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) said:

“For everything, there is a face, and the face of your religion is prayers. So see to it that none from amongst you damages and disfigures the face of his religion.” “If Your Salaat is accepted, then all your other deeds /Aamal are accepted.” (Source: Biharul Anwar, Volume 82, Page 209).

Therefore, it is obligatory for whoever reaches one of the specified times of prayer to perform it.

Allah Subahana hu wa tala says:

فَسُبْحَٰنَ ٱللَّهِ حِينَ تُمْسُونَ وَحِينَ تُصْبِحُونَ “So Exalted is Allah when you reach the evening and when you reach the morning. وَلَهُ ٱلْحَمْدُ فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَعَشِيًّا وَحِينَ تُظْهِرُونَ And to Him   is [due all] praise throughout the heavens and the earth. And (Exalted is He) at night and when  you are at noon.”  [Quran 30: 17-18]

Each salah may take at least 5 minutes, but it may be lengthened as a person’s wishes. Muslims must pray salaat in a pure and peaceful environment, alone or together, in a   mosque   or at home, at work or on-road, indoors or out, anywhere they are at the salaat time they must perform salaat.

Islam is a religion that is most concerned about the care of its ummah. Allah SWT allows flexibility in salah in certain situations like a journey, war; or illness Muslims have a right to make their salaat easy according to given rules.

Parents have to teach their children how to perform salah .   They must take strict focus on this act of their children. Parents have a right to beat their children if their child is ten years old and neglect his salaat.

Holy prophet ﷺ said:

“Command your children to perform prayer when they become seven years old, and beat them for (not performing) it (i.e. prayer) when they become ten years old; and arrange their beds (so that boys and girls sleep) separately.” [Ahmad, At-Tirmidhi, Abu Dawood].

Salah is dear to Allah: Importance Of Namaz.

Salah (Salat, Namaz) is the essential prayer to ALLAH by Muslims in  supplication to Allah  (S.W.T.). The term is usually used to allude to the five daily supplications to ALLAH, which are necessary for all  mature Muslims . In addition, Salah is Islam’s most significant demonstration of love (Ibadah, Ibadat). And the importance of Namaz is such that under not many circumstances, it can be overlooked. A man who offers salat yet does not think about salat’s masail (standards and laws) is similar to one who considers salat unimportant. For a few persons, the absence of information on some masail of salat, wudu, and ghusl, may be an adequate reason. However, for some people, the lack of learning is no reason. The Islamic sharia may require such persons, now and again, even to repeat the Namaz of their entire existence with the right strategy. So, it is essential for each Muslim to know and comprehend the importance of Namaz .wisely to increase the full advantage of this demonstration of love. And he is additionally not considered as one who is unaware of salat.

Importance of Salah (Prayer) According to the Holy Quran

Salah is the major form of worship that a Muslim offers five times a day regularly. It is an obligation upon a Muslim and a Muslim is to offer no excuse when it comes to offering Salah. The offering of Salah in addition to representing the submission of Muslims to their Lord also has other benefits as well which are highly cherished by every Muslim.

Download step by step salah app

The establishment of Salah is one of the major topics upon which Quran has emphasized more than anything else. In Quran Allah Almighty has stressed upon Muslims to learn to offer Salah regularly and with mentions of offering Salah Allah has also mentioned its benefits with it as well. The lines below give the major benefits of Salah that elaborate the importance of Salah.

Significance of Performing 5 time Prayers

Invoking Allah:

Although there is no constraint upon a Muslim on how to invoke Allah Almighty, however, prayer is the preferred means of doing so as when a person worships Allah he or she develops a connection with Allah and any invocation within that or after that connection is bound to be accepted by Allah more compared to invocation done in any other circumstance. In Quran, Allah Almighty says:

Allah is With Those Who Offer Namaz and Stay Patient

“O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.” (2:153)

Therefore, a Muslim must use prayers as a means of invocation and ask Allah Almighty for help and assistance in any difficulty or worry.

Leading To Taqwa:

Piety or righteousness is the prime objective which a Muslim has to achieve in this life. All the instructions, constraints, freedom, rights and education provided by Islam are with the objective that a Muslim becomes pious and moves on the righteous path. In this regard, prayer has a great role to play as it promotes Taqwa or piety in the follower. In Quran, Allah Almighty says:

“This is the Book in which there is no doubt, a guidance for those who have Taqwa: who believe in the unseen, and who establish Salah, and spend out of what we have provided for them.” (2:2-3)

Therefore, in addition to giving charity and believing in the unseen, a Muslim must also establish Salah in order to move towards Taqwa.

Reward In The Afterworld:

Every deed, whether good or bad that a Muslim undertakes in this life, he or she will have to be answerable for it in the afterlife. Although all the deeds get rewarded in the afterlife, however, the actual reward of Salah will truly be realized in the afterlife when Allah Almighty will shower special blessings on that person. In Quran, Allah says:

Who Offer Namaz will not Grieve

“Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds and establish prayer and give zakah will have their reward with their Lord, and there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.” (2:277)

Therefore, prayer is not something that ends in this world, rather the real reward of it will come to surface in the afterlife.

Staying Connected With Allah:

Muslims who realize that Allah Almighty is their Lord and the Giver of everything, they try to develop a relation with Him and wish to stay connected with Him as much as possible so that their relation grows strong. Salah can effectively help in achieving so, as Allah says in Quran:

Establish Prayer Benifits and Significance

And when you have completed the prayer, remember Allah standing, sitting, or [lying] on your sides. But when you become secure, re-establish [regular] prayer. Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times. (4:103)

Therefore, performing prayers is a means of developing a connection with Allah Almighty and when a Muslim does so five times a day, then the consequent relationship is to naturally grow strong.

Protection From Satan:

Satan is an open enemy of believers and all what he tries is to make people go stray from the path of righteousness and go down in the path of oblivion and darkness. Satan tries to tempt a person in all the possible ways and when a person once listens to him, he gradually lures him or her down further into the pit of darkness. Therefore, seeking protection from Satan is also imperative for a Muslim. In Quran Allah Almighty says:

Namaz Protects from Satan

Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not desist? (5:91)

Therefore, not offering prayer is actually falling into the prey of Satan, whereas those who try to offer and establish prayer are actually resisting his temptation and when these temptations are resisted for long the result is one not falling prey to Satan ever again on any forefront.

Prevention From Lewdness:

In life, a Muslim gets exposed to all sorts of environments and people, all of which have a direct impact on the personality of the person. There is no denying the fact that the current plight of the people of the world is miserable where they are more prone towards ills and lewdness compared to goodness, thus if a Muslim starts being like other people, he or she goes down the road of darkness. Thus, in order to prevent one’s self from all the lewdness that is common in the world of today, a Muslim must find refuge in Salah as it will help in combating lewdness, as Allah says in Quran:

Prayer Prevents From Lewdness

Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do. (29:45)

Therefore, a Muslim must consider Salah as an effective weapon when it comes to fighting lewdness and evils of all sorts.

Conclusion:

In a nutshell, those who learn and read Quran on regular basis are familiar with the importance of Salah and how strongly has Allah Almighty emphasized on it and explained its importance to the people in Quran. A Muslim must realize that above anything, Salah is an obligation and every Muslim has to fulfill his or her obligation.

What is Prayer in Islam?

Prayer in Islam is a type of worship consisting of specific statements and actions. It is begun by pronouncing the greatness of Allah, and is concluded with salutations of peace. As prayer is the essence of Islam, we will discuss it here in detail.

Importance of prayer in Islam

To state it simply, prayer must exist, for without it Islam cannot stand. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The head of the matter is Islam, its pillar is the prayer, and the top of its hump is jihad in the way of Allah.”

Prayer was the first act of worship that was made obligatory by Allah. Its obligation was revealed directly to the Prophet during his ascension to heaven.

Anas said: “The prayers were made obligatory on The Prophet (peace be upon him) the night of his ascension to heaven. At first, they were fifty in number, but were reduced several times until they were five. Then it was proclaimed, ‘O Muhammad, the order is not changed. These five are (equivalent) to the fifty.” (Related by Ahmad, an-Nasa’i and at-Tirmizhi, who said it is sahih.)

Prayer is the first act that the person will be held accountable for. `Abdullah ibn Qart related that the Messenger of Allah  (peace be upon him) said “The first act that the slave will be accountable for on the Day of Judgement will be prayer. If it is good, then the rest of his acts will be good. And if it is evil, then the rest of his acts will be evil.” (Related by at-Tabarani)

Prayer is the last thing that the Prophet (peace be upon him) recommended to his nation before he died, saying, “Prayer, prayer and what your right hand possesses.”

Prayer will be the last thing taken away from the religion. When it perishes, Islam will perish. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “If Islam were stripped away, piece by piece, people would hold tight to the next one. The first thing taken would be ruling and governance, and the last thing would be prayer.” (Related by Ibn Hibban from the hadith of Abu Umamah)

In many verses of the Quran, Allah follows up prayer with the remembrance of Allah. “Lo! Worship preserves (one) from lewdness and iniquity, but verily, remembrance of Allah is more important.” (Al-`Ankabut 29:45); “He is successful who grows and remembers the name of his Lord, so pray (Al-A`la 87:14-15); “So serve Me and establish worship for My remembrance.” (Taha 20:74)

Sometimes, Allah the Almighty mentions prayer along with zakah: “Establish prayer and pay zakah” (Al-Baqarah 2:110)  And at times, with patience: “Seek help in patience and prayer” (Al-Baqarah 2:45), and with hajj: “So pray unto your Lord and sacrifice” (Al-Kawthar 108:2); “Say: Lo! my worship and my sacrifice and my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the Worlds. He has no partner. This am I commanded, and I am the first of those who surrender (unto Him).” (Al-An`am 6:162-163)

At other times, Allah begins the acts of piety with prayers and ends with them, as in the verses about the Mi`raj ( Ascension to Heaven ): “Successful indeed are the believers who are humble in their prayers,” and the verses, “And who pay heed to their prayers. These are the heirs who will inherit Paradise. There will they abide” (Al-Mu’minun 23:1, 9-11)

The importance of prayer is so great that one is ordered to observe it while travelling or not , while one is safe or in fear: “Be guardians of your prayers, and of the mid-most prayer, and stand up with devotion to Allah. And if you go in fear, then (pray) standing or on horseback. When you are safe, remember Allah, as He has taught you that which (heretofore) you knew not,” (Al-Baqarah 2:238-239)

Allah explains how to pray during fear, safety or wartime: “And when you are among them and arrange their prayers for them, let only a party of them stand with you (to worship) and let them take their arms. Then, when they have performed their prostrations, let them fall to the rear and let another party come to pray with you, and let them take their precautions and arms. They who disbelieve long for you to neglect your arms and your baggage, that they may attack. It is no sin for you to lay aside your arms, if rain impedes you or if you are sick. But take your precautions. Lo! Allah prepares for the disbelievers shameful punishment. When you have performed your prayer, remember Allah, standing, sitting and reclining. And when you are in safety, observe your prayer properly. Prayer at fixed hours has been enjoined on the believers.” (An-Nisa’ 4:102-103)

Allah also strongly warns those who tamper with their prayers or are heedless : “Now there has succeeded them a later generation who have ruined their prayers and have followed lusts. But they will meet deception.” (Maryam 19:59); “Ah, woe unto worshippers who are heedless of their prayers .” (Al-Ma`un 107:4-5)

Prayer is one of the most important acts in Islam, and thus it requires a special guidance. Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) asked his Lord to give him descendants who abided by their prayers: “My Lord! Cause me and (some) of my offspring to remain constant in prayer. And O our Lord! Accept my supplication.” (Ibrahim 14:40)

Almighty Allah knows best.

7 reasons Why Salah is So Important to Muslims

essay on importance of namaz

Linguistically, Salah (prayer) means invocation (Al- Fawzan, 2005). Allah ﷻ commanded the Prophet ﷺ to ‘pray’ for the believers saying:

“… And invoke (Allah’s blessings) upon them .” [Quran 9: 103]

Salah is the second pillar of Islam, after the Testimony of Faith by which one becomes Muslim. It is also the head of the physical acts of worship that was brought by all of Allah’s Messengers. Salah is not just a mere act, rather it is an act with multiple benefits that signify its obligation. These benefits are as follows:

1. Obligatory act

Prayer was commanded by Allah ﷻ to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ on his ascension to Heaven (Al-Miraj) ,unlike any other act of worship. This shows its greatness and confirms its obligation on all Muslims. It is mentioned in a Hadith:

“ Between a man and shirk and kufr there stands his neglect of the prayer.” [Narrated by Muslim]

According to the unanimous agreement of the Muslim scholars, a Muslim who denies Salah is considered an apostate and he/she should be asked to renounce, and if he/she does not, he/she is supposed to be killed.

2. Virtuous deed

Salah is one of the most virtuous deeds as mentioned in the following hadith:

“ A man said to Ibn Mas’ud: ‘Which deed is most virtuous?’ He said: ‘I asked Allah’s Messenger (that). He said: “Salah at the beginning of its time.” I asked him: “What is after that O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “Being dutiful to one’s parents.” I said: “What is after that [O Messenger of Allah]?” He said: “Jihad in the Way of Allah. “ [At- Tirmidhi, 173]

3. First question in the Day of Judgement

Prophet ﷺ said:

“ The first matter that the slave will be brought to account for on the Day of Judgment is the prayer. If it is sound, then the rest of his deeds will be sound. And if it is bad, then the rest of his deeds will be bad .” [Recorded by al-Tabarani]

Therefore, we should do our best to perfect our Salah, so as to perfect our deeds.

4. Relation to Allah

All acts of worship are performed so that one gets close to Allah ﷻ. Salah, too, helps bring one close to Him ﷻ, as it is an act performed five times a day. The connection between a servant and Allah ﷻ is established, put into practice, improved and increased through Salah.  As mentioned in the aforementioned Hadith, if the prayers are sound and proper, then the rest of the deeds will be sound and proper. When a servant goes to sujood during Salah, he/she is close to his Creator. The Salah is like a conversation between a slave and his Master. The soul requires this connection so that it does not get corrupted.

5. Lasting effect

Salah has a lasting effect on a person, if it is done properly. It brings about the true remembrance of Allah ﷻ and causes one to turn to Him   ﷻ for forgiveness. So, after finishing the prayer, one’s heart will be occupied with remembrance of Allah ﷻ; with fear of His displeasure  and hope in His Mercy. Allah ﷻ said:

“ Verily, man was created impatient, irritable when evil touches him and niggardly when good touches him. Except for those devoted to prayer those who remain constant in their prayers… ” [Quran:  19-23]

6. Fight temptation

When one performs Salah, it means he/she is aware of Allah ﷻ and this helps in successfully striving against all kinds of evils and temptations. It also helps one to remain steadfast at times of trials and hardships and protect oneself against the weakness of the flesh and the harm of excessive appetites, Allah ﷻ said:

“ Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing .” [Quran 29:45]

7. Type of purification

A Muslim turns to Allahﷻ  five times a day, making it a type of purification for the evil deeds he committed. Also, the repeated standing in front of Allah ﷻ should keep the person away from performing sins during the day. Moreover, it should also be a time of remorse and repentance, such that he earnestly asks Allah ﷻ for forgiveness for all those sins that he has committed. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“If a person had a stream outside his door and he bathed in it five times a day, do you think he would have any filth left on him?” The people said, “No filth would remain on him whatsoever.” The Prophet ﷺ then said, “That is like the five daily prayers: Allah wipes away the sins by them. ” [Recorded by al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Salah, being the second pillar of Islam, has a great importance in the lives of Muslims of all ages, all over the world. Allah  ﷻhas chosen an ideal life for Muslims, and prayer presents the real picture of that life. In Salah, you are getting an opportunity to speak to the All-Powerful God Who created everything in this universe. A great deal of emphasis is placed on Salah so that it is observed dutifully, since whatever good deeds done by one who neglects Salah are useless. So, as Muslims, we should realise that above all, Salah is an obligation, and it is upon us to fulfil this obligation no matter what.

The Significance and Top 10 Benefits of Salah (Namaz)

  • Islamic Knowledge

Salah, also known as Namaz, is a fundamental pillar of Islam and holds immense significance in the life of a practicing Muslim. It is a form of worship and spiritual connection with Allah (God). This article aims to provide a detailed overview of Namaz, exploring its definition, significance in the Quran and Hadith, and highlighting ten benefits of regular prayer.

What is Salah (Namaz)?

Namaz is the Islamic ritual prayer performed by Muslims around the world. It is a physical and spiritual act of worship that involves specific movements and recitations. The word “Salah” is derived from the Arabic root word و ص ل  ( w-ṣ-l ) which means to connect, praise, or communicate. Namaz serves as a direct means of communication between the believer and Allah that reinforces the bond of servitude and devotion.

Significance of Salah in the Quran

The Quran, the holy book of Islam, emphasizes the importance of prayer in numerous verses. One of the central passages regarding Salah is found in Surah Al-Baqarah (Chapter 2, Verses 238-239):

“Guard your prayers, and [especially] the middle prayer and stand before Allah, devoutly obedient.”

This verse underscores the necessity of protecting and observing prayers, with a specific mention of the middle prayer, which refers to the Asr prayer. Additionally, the Quran mentions the benefits of establishing regular prayers in Surah Al-Ankabut (Chapter 29, Verse 45):

“Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do.”

These verses highlight the role of Namaz in preventing immorality and wrongdoing, and it emphasizes the remembrance of Allah as the ultimate source of guidance and righteousness.

Significance in Hadith

The sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), known as Hadith, provide additional insights into the significance of Namaz. Numerous Hadith emphasize the importance of prayer in the life of a Muslim. One well-known Hadith states:

“The first thing that the people will be called to account for on the Day of Judgment is their Salah. If it is in order, then they will have succeeded; and if it is lacking, then they have failed.”

This Hadith underscores the pivotal role of prayer in determining the success or failure of a believer on the Day of Judgment. It reflects the gravity with which Salah is regarded in Islam.

Top 10 Benefits of Salah

The act of performing Salah has numerous benefits, not only spiritually but also in terms of physical, mental, and social well-being. Here are 10 benefits of Salah in detail:

  • Salah is a profound act of worship that establishes a direct link between the worshiper and Allah. Through the recitation of verses from the Quran and specific supplications, individuals deepen their spiritual connection. This practice fosters a sense of awe, reverence, and love for the Divine, providing a source of guidance and solace in times of need.
  • Salah is not a sporadic or random activity; it is performed at specific times each day. This regularity instills discipline and order in an individual’s life. The structured routine of Salah serves as a constant reminder of the importance of prioritizing spiritual duties amidst the demands of daily life, helping to strike a balance between worldly responsibilities and spiritual obligations.
  • During Salah, practitioners engage in a series of physical postures and recitations, demanding their full attention. This mindfulness cultivates concentration and presence in the moment. By immersing themselves in the prayer, individuals temporarily disconnect from worldly distractions that fosters mental clarity and reducing stress.
  • Salah involves a set of physical movements, including standing, bowing, prostrating, and sitting. These actions provide a form of gentle exercise, promoting flexibility, balance, and muscle engagement. While not intense like a workout, the physical aspect of Salah contributes to overall well-being and complements a healthy lifestyle.
  • Congregational prayers at the mosque bring Muslims together as a community. Shared experiences of worship create a sense of unity, fostering a supportive environment. The bonds formed during congregational prayers extend beyond the mosque, promoting a sense of brotherhood and sisterhood among believers.
  • Salah includes moments of silent reflection and introspection. As individuals recite verses and seek forgiveness, they confront their actions and intentions. This self-awareness encourages personal growth, helping individuals identify areas for improvement and motivating them to align their lives with Islamic principles.
  • The rhythmic movements, controlled breathing, and spiritual focus inherent in Salah provide a natural avenue for stress reduction. Engaging in prayer allows individuals to release tension, find emotional stability, and seek refuge in the connection with Allah. This regular practice contributes to mental resilience and well-being.
  • Salah incorporates expressions of gratitude, humility, and acknowledgment of one’s dependence on Allah. This fosters a mindset of appreciation for life’s blessings, reinforcing the importance of humility in the face of divine greatness. Practitioners are reminded to be grateful for what they have and to approach life with a humble attitude.
  • The verses recited during Salah often contain ethical and moral teachings. By internalizing these values, individuals are inspired to embody them in their daily lives. Salah serves as a spiritual compass, guiding believers toward righteous behavior, compassion, honesty, and fairness in their interactions with others.
  • Engaging in regular Salah serves as a deterrent to negative behaviors. The consciousness of being accountable to Allah and the awareness of divine presence encourage individuals to avoid actions that go against Islamic teachings. Salah becomes a constant reminder of the ethical standards and moral conduct expected in one’s personal and social life.

Concluding Remarks

Namaz, or Salah, is a profound act of worship in Islam, deeply embedded in the spiritual and practical aspects of a Muslim’s life. Its significance is rooted in the Quranic verses and Hadith, with numerous benefits ranging from spiritual connection to discipline and forgiveness. Regular observance of Salah not only fulfills a religious obligation but also enriches the believer’s life with guidance, humility, and a sense of purpose.

What is Salah?

The salah is a special form of worship that is the second most important pillar of Islam after the shahada (testimony of faith). It is an obligatory form of prayer performed five times a day that was revealed in the Holy Qur’an and taught to us by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

There are many verses in the Holy Quran which Allah tells us about the importance of prayer. Here are two such verses:

But those who hold fast to the Book and establish prayer – indeed, We will not allow to be lost the reward of the pious. Qur'an - Chapter 7, Verse 170
Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do. Qur'an - Chapter 29, Verse 45

The salah involves a number of physical movements – standing, bowing, prostrating, and sitting. It also involves the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran in Arabic along with a number of dua (supplications).

The Muslim will face the direction of the Kaba, the Sacred House of Allah in Makkah, whenever they perform their prayer. These physical movements, recitations, and supplications are all done to show humility and submission to Allah.

Why do Muslims Pray Salah?

The reason why Muslims pray at all relates to what Islam considers to be the purpose of life – to worship Allah alone. Shortly after Muhammad became a Prophet, the performance of salah (worship) was one of the first commandments given to him by Allah.

Allah Almighty tells us in the Holy Qur’an that mankind was only created for one reason: to worship Him.

And I (Allah) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone). Qur'an - Chapter 51, Verse 56

The salah is the second pillar of Islam and it is a critical part of a Muslim’s faith. One of the biggest differences between a Muslim and a non-Muslim is the salah. Our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“Between a man and polytheism and disbelief there stands his neglect of the prayer.”

Why Do Muslims Pray 5 Times a Day?

This question is quite common and many people do not know the real reason of where the number five came from. When Muhammad (peace be upon him) became a Prophet at the age of forty one of the first things he was taught was how to pray. Allah sent the angel Gabriel (Jibreel) to teach him how to make wudu and perform the salah.

Some 11 years after the beginning of prophethood a miraculous journey took place in which the angel Gabriel took Muhammad (peace be upon him) to the first heaven. It was during this event that Allah commanded him and the Muslims to specifically pray five times a day. This event was recorded in the Holy Qur’an and we also have authentic narrations from the Prophet (peace be upon him) himself that he undertook this journey.

The full story of the Prophet’s ascent to heaven is known as Isra and Mi’raj . It is a lengthy story for which we will not go into detail. However, the last part of the story will be shared; the part where the commandment to pray specifically five times a day was given. Up until that point in history the Muslims would perform salah, but there was no specific number of times that was legislated.

The Story of Isra and Mi’raj

Exalted is He who took His Servant (Prophet Muhammad) by night from al-Masjid al-Haram (In Makkah) to al-Masjid al- Aqsa (Jerusalem), whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing. Qur'an - Chapter 17, Verse 1

The last part of the Isra and Mi’raj story begins at the moment the angel Gabriel (Jibreel) brings Muhammad (peace be upon him) from Makkah to Jerusalem, and then to the gates of the first level of heaven:

When I reached the nearest heaven. Gabriel said to the heaven gatekeeper, ‘Open the gate.’ The gatekeeper asked, ‘Who is it?’ He said, ‘Gabriel.’ The gatekeeper asked,’ Who is accompanying you?’ Gabriel said, ‘Muhammad.’ The gatekeeper said, ‘Has he been called?’ Gabriel said, ‘Yes.’ Then it was said, ‘He is welcomed. What a wonderful visit his is!’ Then I met Adam and greeted him and he said, ‘You are welcomed O son and Prophet.’

Then we ascended to the second heaven. It was asked, ‘Who is it?’ Gabriel said, ‘Gabriel.’ It was said, ‘Who is with you?’ He said, ‘Muhammad.’ It was asked, ‘Has he been sent for?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ It was said, ‘He is welcomed. What a wonderful visit his is!” Then I met Isa (Jesus) and Yahya (John the Baptist) who said, ‘You are welcomed, O brother and a Prophet.’

Then we ascended to the third heaven. It was asked, ‘Who is it?’ Gabriel said, ‘Gabriel.’ It was asked, ‘Who is with you? Gabriel said, ‘Muhammad.’ It was asked, ‘Has he been sent for?’ ‘Yes,’ said Gabriel. ‘He is welcomed. What a wonderful visit his is!’ (The Prophet added:). There I met Joseph (Yusuf) and greeted him, and he replied, ‘You are welcomed, O brother and a Prophet!’

Then we ascended to the 4th heaven and again the same questions and answers were exchanged as in the previous heavens. There I met Idris and greeted him. He said, ‘You are welcomed O brother and Prophet.’

Then we ascended to the 5th heaven and again the same questions and answers were exchanged as in previous heavens. There I met and greeted Aaron (Harun) who said, ‘You are welcomed O brother and a Prophet”.

Then we ascended to the 6th heaven and again the same questions and answers were exchanged as in the previous heavens. There I met and greeted Moses (Musa) who said, ‘You are welcomed O brother and a Prophet.’ When I proceeded on, he started weeping and on being asked why he was weeping, he said, ‘O Lord! Followers of this youth who was sent after me will enter Paradise in greater number than my followers.’

Then we ascended to the seventh heaven and again the same questions and answers were exchanged as in the previous heavens. There I met and greeted Abraham who said, ‘You are welcomed O son and a Prophet.’

Then I was shown al-Bait al-Ma’mur (i.e. God’s House). I asked Gabriel about it and he said, This is al-Bait al-Ma’mur where 70,000 angels perform prayers daily and when they leave they never return to it (but always a new group comes into it daily).’

Then I was shown Sidrat al-Muntaha (i.e. a tree in the seventh heaven) and I saw its Nabk fruits which resembled the clay jugs of Hajr (i.e. a town in Arabia), and its leaves were like the ears of elephants, and four rivers originated at its root, two of them were apparent and two were hidden. I asked Gabriel about those rivers and he said, ‘The two hidden rivers are in Paradise, and the apparent ones are the Nile and the Euphrates.’

Then fifty prayers were enjoined on me . I descended till I met Moses who asked me, ‘What have you done?’ I said, ‘Fifty prayers have been enjoined on me.’ He said, ‘I know the people better than you, because I had the hardest experience to bring the Israelites to obedience. Your followers cannot put up with such obligation. So, return to your Lord and ask Him (to reduce the number of prayers).’ I returned and asked Allah (for reduction) and He made it forty. I returned and (met Moses) and had a similar discussion, and then returned again to Allah for reduction and He made it thirty, then twenty, then ten, and then I came to Moses who repeated the same advice. Ultimately Allah reduced it to five . When I came to Moses again, he said, ‘What have you done?’ I said, ‘Allah has made it five only.’ He repeated the same advice but I said that I surrendered (to God’s Final Order)'” God’s Apostle was addressed by Allah, “I have decreed My Obligation and have reduced the burden on My servants, and I shall reward a single good deed as if it were ten good deeds.

— Sahih al-Bukhari, volume 4, Book 54, Hadith number 429

Understanding the Concept of Namaz in Islam

Namaz is a prescribed form of worship that involves specific physical postures, recitation of verses from the Quran, and supplications. It serves as a direct communication between the worshipper and Allah. Namaz is performed at specific times throughout the day, which are determined by the position of the sun. It is obligatory for all adult Muslims and serves as a means of purifying the soul and seeking closeness to Allah.

The Importance of Namaz in Islam

Namaz holds great significance in Islam for several reasons. Firstly, it is one of the Five Pillars of Islam , which are the core principles and acts of worship that every Muslim is obligated to follow. Namaz is a way of demonstrating obedience to Allah and fulfilling this important religious duty.

Secondly, Namaz is a means of seeking forgiveness and repentance. Through sincere and heartfelt prayer, We can seek forgiveness for our sins and attain purification of the soul. It is an opportunity for us to reflect upon our actions, seek repentance, and strive for self-improvement.

Thirdly, Namaz serves as a spiritual connection between the worshipper and Allah. It is a way of expressing gratitude for the blessings received and seeking guidance and mercy from the Almighty. Through prayer, Muslims establish a personal relationship with Allah and strengthen their faith.

The Steps Involved in Performing Namaz

Namaz consists of specific steps and postures that must be followed. The following is a brief overview of the steps involved:

  • Niyyah (Intention): Before starting Namaz, a Muslim must have the intention to perform the specific prayer. The intention should be sincere and solely for the sake of pleasing Allah.
  • Standing (Qiyam): The worshipper stands upright, facing the qibla (the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca).
  • Takbir: The prayer begins with the recitation of “Allahu Akbar” (Allah is the Greatest).
  • Recitation: Verses from the Quran are recited in Arabic, typically including Surah Al-Fatiha (the opening chapter of the Quran) and additional verses.
  • Rukoo: The worshipper bows down with hands resting on the knees, expressing humility and submission before Allah.
  • Sujood: The worshipper prostrates, placing the forehead, nose, hands, knees, and toes on the ground. This position symbolizes complete submission to Allah.
  • Sitting (Qa’da): The worshipper sits briefly between the two prostrations.
  • Taslim: The prayer concludes with the recitation of “Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah” (Peace be upon you, and mercy of Allah), turning the head to the right and then to the left.

This is a brief introduction. Practical is important to learn to pray correctly.

Through prayer, Muslims express their gratitude for the blessings in their lives, seek forgiveness for their shortcomings, and request Allah’s help and guidance in their daily lives.

Namaz also serves as a source of spiritual discipline and mindfulness. By establishing a regular prayer routine, Muslims develop self-discipline, focus, and a sense of presence in the moment. It helps in purifying the heart, strengthening the faith, and developing a greater sense of awareness of Allah’s presence.

  • Moral Development: Namaz promotes moral and ethical values, emphasizing humility, patience, gratitude, and compassion. It encourages Muslims to uphold righteousness and be mindful of their actions.
  • Community Unity: Congregational prayers, such as Friday prayers , foster a sense of unity and brotherhood among Muslims. They provide an opportunity for social interaction, strengthening the bond within the Muslim community.

The Importance of Prayer

Description: prayer is a unique training and developmental program which, if well and devotedly performed, can achieve for a muslim many valuable spiritual, physical, and ethical gains..

The importance of the prayer in Islam cannot be understated.  It is the first pillar of Islam that the Prophet, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, mentioned after mentioning the Testimony of Faith, by which one becomes a Muslim.  It was made obligatory upon all the prophets and for all peoples.  God has declared its obligatory status under majestic circumstances.  For example, when God spoke directly to Moses, He said,

“And I have chosen you, so listen to that which is inspired to you.  Verily, I am God! There is none worthy of worship but I, so worship Me and offer prayer perfectly for My remembrance.” (Quran 20:13-14)

Similarly, the prayers were made obligatory upon the Prophet Muhammad during his ascension to heaven.  Furthermore, when God praises the believers, such as in the beginning of the chapter entitled ‘al-Muminoon’ (the Believers), one of the first descriptions He states is their adherence to the prayers.

Once a man asked the Prophet about the most virtuous deed.  The Prophet stated that the most virtuous deed is the prayer.  The man asked again and again and for the first three times, the Prophet answered, “The prayer,” then on the fourth occasion he stated, “Jihad in the way of God.” [1]

The importance of prayer is demonstrated in many of the Prophet’s statements.  For example, the Prophet said,

“The first matter that the slave will be brought to account for on the Day of Judgment is the prayer.  If it is sound, then the rest of his deeds will be sound.  And if it is incomplete, then the rest of his deeds will be incomplete.” [2]

The importance of the prayers lies in the fact that no matter what actions one performs in his life, the most important aspect is one’s relationship to God, that is, one’s faith ( imaan ), God-consciousness ( taqwa ), sincerity ( ikhlas ) and worship of God ( ibaadah ).  This relationship with God is both demonstrated and put into practice, as well as improved and increased, by the prayer.  Therefore, if the prayers are sound and proper, the rest of the deeds will be sound and proper; and if the prayers are not sound and proper, then the rest of the deeds will not be sound and proper, as the Prophet himself stated.

In reality, the prayer is performed properly – with true remembrance of God and turning to Him for forgiveness – it will have a lasting effect on the person.  After he finishes the prayer, his heart will be filled with the remembrance of God.  He will be fearful as well as hopeful of God.  After that experience, he will not want to move from that lofty position to one wherein he disobeys God.  God has mentioned this aspect of the prayer when He has said,

“Verily, the prayer keeps one from the great sins and evil deeds” (Quran 29:45)

Nadwi has described this effect in the following eloquent way,

Its aim is to generate within the subliminal self of man such spiritual power, light of faith and awareness of God as can enable him to strive successfully against all kinds of evils and temptations and remain steadfast at times of trial and adversity and protect himself against the weakness of the flesh and the mischief of immoderate appetites. [3]

The overall affect that the properly performed prayers should have upon humans is described in other verses in the Quran:

“Verily, man was created impatient, irritable when evil touches him and ungenerous when good touches him.  Except for those devoted to prayer those who remain constant in their prayers…” (Quran 70:19-23)

As for the Hereafter, God’s forgiveness and pleasure is closely related to the prayers.  The Messenger of God said,

“God has obligated five prayers.  Whoever excellently performs their ablutions, prays them in their proper times, completes their bows, prostrations and khushu [4] , has a promise from God that He will forgive him.  And whoever does not do that has no promise from God.  He may either forgive him or punish him.”

The prayers are a type of purification for a human being.  He turns and meets with his Lord five times a day.  As alluded to above, this repeated standing in front of God should keep the person from doing sinful acts during the day.  Furthermore, it should also be a time of remorse and repentance, such that he earnestly asks God for forgiveness for those sins that he committed.  In addition, the prayer in itself is a good deed that wipes away some of the evil deeds that he performed.  These points can be noted in the following hadith of the Prophet, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him:

“If a person had a stream outside his door and he bathed in it five times a day, do you think he would have any filth left on him?” The people said, “No filth would remain on him whatsoever.” The Prophet then said, “That is like the five daily prayers: God wipes away the sins by them.” ( Saheeh Al-Bukhari, Saheeh Muslim )

In another hadith, the Prophet said,

“The five daily prayers and the Friday Prayer until the Friday prayer are expiation for what is between them.” ( Saheeh Muslim )

[1] This is form a hadith recorded by Ahmad and ibn Hibban.  According to al-Albani, the hadith is hasan.  Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani, Sahih al-Targheeb wa al-Tarheeb (Beirut: al-Maktab al-Islami, 1982), vol.  1, p.  150

[4] Khushu` in the prayer is where the person’s heart is attuned to the prayer.  This feeling in the heart is then reflected on the body.  The person remains still and calm.  His gaze is also lowered.  Even his voice is affected by this feeling in the heart.  For more details on this concept (as well as the difference between it and khudhu`), see Muhammad al-Shaayi, al-Furooq al-Laughawiyyah wa Atharahaa fi Tafseer al-Quran al-Kareem (Riyadh: Maktabah al-Ubaikaan, 1993), pp.  249-254.

Purpose of prayer in Islam

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

Prayer ( salat ) is the most important practice in Islam after declaring faith in Allah and His Messenger. The Prophet described the prayer as a light , the pillar of Islam , and among the best deeds.

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud reported: I asked, “O Messenger of Allah, which deed is best?” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

الصَّلَاةُ عَلَى مِيقَاتِهَا Prayer in its proper time. Source: Sahih Bukhari 2630, Grade: Muttafaqun Alayhi

But this is for the true and sincere prayer that completes its purpose and objectives, both inwardly and outwardly, not simply going through the motions without presence of heart. In order for the prayer to be fulfilled, we must allow it to purify our hearts, to keep us away from sin, and to enrich our lives in the remembrance of Allah.

Purification of the heart is the ultimate religious objective of prayer. A prayer will only be acceptable to Allah if it is done with sincerity, reverence, awareness, and repentance. Our prayers should cleanse the heart of every spiritual disease such as envy, malice, and arrogance.

Allah said:

قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن تَزَكَّىٰ وَذَكَرَ اسْمَ رَبِّهِ فَصَلَّىٰ He has succeeded who purifies himself, who remembers the name of his Lord and prays. Surat Al-A’la 87:14-15

The parable of the prayer is that of a running river in which we cleanse our hearts five times a day.

Jabir ibn Abdullah reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

مَثَلُ الصَّلَوَاتِ الْخَمْسِ كَمَثَلِ نَهْرٍ جَارٍ غَمْرٍ عَلَى بَابِ أَحَدِكُمْ يَغْتَسِلُ مِنْهُ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ خَمْسَ مَرَّاتٍ The example of the five prayers is that of a river running at the door of one of you in which he cleanses himself five times a day. Source: Sahih Muslim 668, Grade: Sahih

When we are preparing for prayer, we should keep this image in mind so that our awareness is focused on the goal of attaining a pure heart. Related to this inward purification is the purification from sin, as prayer is among the greatest good deeds for which we expiate our sins.

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud reported: A man kissed a woman who was not his wife and he came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and told him about that. The verse was revealed:

أَقِمْ الصَّلَاةَ طَرَفَيْ النَّهَارِ وَزُلَفًا مِنْ اللَّيْلِ إِنَّ الْحَسَنَاتِ يُذْهِبْنَ السَّيِّئَاتِ Establish prayer at the two ends of the day and in the first hours of the night. Verily, good deeds will do away with bad deeds. (11:114) Source: Sahih Bukhari 4410, Grade: Muttafaqun Alayhi

This is expiation is another way to view the prayer as a river, since it cleanses us from the sins we commit.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

أَرَأَيْتُمْ لَوْ أَنَّ نَهَرًا بِبَابِ أَحَدِكُمْ، يَغْتَسِلُ فِيهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ خَمْسًا مَا تَقُولُ ذَلِكَ يُبْقِي مِنْ دَرَنِهِ‏ If there was a river at the door of anyone of you and he took a bath in it five times a day, would you notice any dirt on him?

They said, “Not a trace of dirt would be left.” The Prophet said:

فَذَلِكَ مِثْلُ الصَّلَوَاتِ الْخَمْسِ يَمْحُو اللَّهُ بِهَا الْخَطَايَا That is the example of the five prayers with which Allah erases evil deeds. Source: Sahih Bukahri 505, Grade: Muttafaqun Alayhi

The ablution with water ( wudu ), which itself precedes the prayer, represents this process of repentance and purification. When we perform ablution, we should imagine that the sincerity and purity of our act is cleansing the sin from our souls with every drop of water.

When a Muslim or a believer washes his face in ablution, then every sin which he committed with his eyes will be washed away with the last drop of water. When he washes his hands, then every sin which he committed with his hands will be washed away with the last drop of water. When he washes his feet, then every sin which he committed with his feet will be washed away with the last drop of water until he emerges purified from sin. Source: Sahih Muslim 244, Grade: Sahih

For this reason, the Prophet’s supplication upon completing ablution was to say this:

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي مِنْ التَّوَّابِينَ وَاجْعَلْنِي مِنْ الْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ O Allah, make me among those who repent and make me among those who purify themselves. Source: Sunan At-Tirmidhi 55, Grade: Sahih

In general, the prayer expiates minor sins for which there is no need of specific repentance. We should not think to ourselves that we may perform major sins and expiate them with prayers alone.

Uthman reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

When the time of prescribed prayer arrives, no Muslim performs it with its ablution, its reverence, and its bowing except that it will be an expiation for his previous sins as long as he does not commit a major sin, and this applies for all time. Source: Sahih Muslim 228, Grade: Sahih

Major sins which involve the rights of people, such as theft, require specific acts of repentance like returning the stolen money or otherwise redressing what was done wrong. However, in some special cases a sincere prayer as an act of repentance can expiate sins which might otherwise involve worldly punishment.

Anas ibn Malik reported: A man came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said, “O Messenger of Allah, I have committed an offense which deserves legal punishment, so impose it upon me.” The man was present at the prayer and he prayed with the Messenger of Allah. When they finished the prayer, the man repeated his request. The Prophet said:

‏هَلْ حَضَرْتَ الصَّلاَةَ مَعَنَا Were you present with us at the time of prayer?

The man said yes. The Prophet said:

قَدْ غُفِرَ لَكَ ‏ You have been forgiven. Source: Sahih Bukhari 6437, Grade: Muttafaqun Alayhi

In this example, the man confessed to the Prophet without naming his specific crime. The Prophet did not like to apply legal punishment if the situation could be rectified without it. Since the man’s confession was vague enough, yet indicative of his sincere repentance, the Prophet informed him that the prayer had expiated his sin.

Having performed prayer with this understanding and spiritual purpose, the natural result is that our prayers should prevent us from committing further sins and instill us with good character.

إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ تَنْهَىٰ عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنكَرِ ۗ وَلَذِكْرُ اللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ Verily, the prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. Surah Al-Ankabut 29:45

How then can a person perform prayer, intending to purify his heart and to repent for his sins, and thereafter commit more sins and crimes? Further indulgence in wrongdoing after the prayer only demonstrates that the prayer performed had been deficient.

Abu Huraira reported: A man came to the Prophet and he said, “Indeed, a man prays in the night but he steals in the morning.” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

إِنَّهُ سَيَنْهَاهُ مَا يَقُولُ Verily, it should prevent him from doing that. Source: Musnad Ahmad 9486, Grade:  Sahih

No doubt, the avoidance of sin is a major objective of the prayer, but as the verse says, “the remembrance of Allah is greater.”

Essentially, the prayer is an entire act of remembrance for Allah, remembering His greatness, the path of the prophets, and the Hereafter. This remembrance is at the core of prayer and every act of worship and good deed. It is what enriches our lives and leads to the eternal life in Paradise. Hence, the parable of those who remember or forget Allah is like the difference between the living and the dead.

Abu Musa reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

مَثَلُ الْبَيْتِ الَّذِي يُذْكَرُ اللَّهُ فِيهِ وَالْبَيْتِ الَّذِي لَا يُذْكَرُ اللَّهُ فِيهِ مَثَلُ الْحَيِّ وَالْمَيِّتِ The example of the house in which Allah is remembered and the house in which Allah is not remembered is that of the living and the dead. Source: Sahih Bukhari 6044, Grade: Muttafaqun Alayhi

With this in mind, we must strive to make our prayers meaningful on every level, inwardly and outwardly, according to the rules of proper practice and the rules of the heart.

Success comes from Allah, and Allah knows best.

The Importance of Salah

‘Salah is among the greatest foundations of Islam, the highest among the actions of eemaan, the shortest way to Ar-Rahmaan. It is the sought after shelter of the repentant, the safe haven for the frightened, the best asset of the hard-working and tranquility for the worshippers’ hearts.

Salat - The Muslim Prayer Book

  • Importance of Prayer

Salat or the prescribed Prayer has been mentioned in the Holy Quran as an essential characteristic of a true believer. The Holy Quran states:

essay on importance of namaz

This is a perfect Book; there is no doubt in it; it is a guidance for the righteous, Who believe in the unseen and observe Prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them; (2:3-4)

Prayer or Salat , helps us to get rid of sins; inclines us more and more towards God and goodly things and so gradually purifies us. But this is not the end. Prayer does much more than this. It brings man closer to his Creator. The worshipper tries to imitate God in His most excellent attributes and is constantly transformed from a lowly and worldly person to a highly noble and sublime servant of God. The Holy Quran mentions this distinctive quality of Salat by saying:

essay on importance of namaz

Recite that which has been revealed to thee of the Book, and observe Prayer. Surely, Prayer restrains one from indecency and manifest evil, and remembrance of Allah indeed is the greatest virtue . And Allah knows what you do. (29:46)

Prayer is indeed a sure and well-tried prescription for purity of the heart and the soul. It is through Salat alone that we are able to establish a living communion with Allah. The Quran says:

essay on importance of namaz

Surely, only those who follow the Book of Allah and observe Prayer and spend out of what We have provided for them, secretly and openly, hope for a bargain which will never fail; In order that He may give them their full rewards, and even increase them out of His bounty. He is surely Most Forgiving, Most Appreciating. (35:30-31)

According to the Holy Prophet (sa) Salat is the pinnacle of the spiritual life of the believer. It is the highest form of Divine worship. The Holy Prophet (sa) is further reported to have observed:

Prayer brings the believer into communion with his Lord.

It must be realised that sincere prayer never goes in vain. Sometimes, the deep spiritual experience of the intense love of God brings tears to the eyes. Sometimes, a milder pleasure of love fills the heart with sublime happiness. These experiences are signs of the Prayer being alive, meaningful and fruitful. Otherwise, just a performance of formality is not enough to benefit man. That would be obeying an order without one’s heart being in it. That is why it is highly essential that every beginner should keep this noble objective before him and always try to make his Prayers come alive.

The Salat combines all forms and degrees expressive of humility and submission. The worshippers stand in rows and respectfully behind the Imam .

All the worshippers who line up behind the Imam must follow his movements at his call. The call for every movement is Allahu Akbar except when the Imam straightens himself from the position of Ruku‘ , i.e. the bowing position, when instead of saying Allahu Akbar , he says Sami‘allahu Liman Hamidah which means ‘most certainly God listens to those who praise Him.’ At this call, all the followers also straighten up with arms by their sides, saying Rabbana Wa Lakal Hamd , Hamdan Kathiran Tayyiban Mubarakan Fihi .

Sincerity and humility are the essence of prayer. Allah enjoins believers:

essay on importance of namaz

Surely, success does come to the believers, Who are humble in their Prayers, (23:2-3)

The Holy Prophet (sa) has said: No servant of Allah humbles himself for the sake of Allah, but Allah thereby brings about his Raf‘a. Raf‘a is an Arabic word meaning ‘to raise’. It does not mean that Allah will lift him bodily to heaven. Obviously it means that Allah will exalt his status before Him.

True humility can only be achieved by mentally concentrating on the attributes of Allah. When His immense greatness dawns on someone, one has no choice but to be humbled.

Importance of Salah

essay on importance of namaz

What does Salah mean?

Salah means prayer, blessing and commendation. It is also known as “Namaz” . The words "Salah" appears 67 times in the Quran. In Islam Salah is considered a second of the five pillars of the religion as daily obligatory standardized prayers, it is as the whole edifice of religion is based on Salah.

History of Salah

This day Allah Almighty gifted Salah to his last Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (S.A.W.W) and ordered all Muslims to perform Salah.

Where to perform Salah

Salah can be performed at any clean place. Masjid is the place where all Muslims gather to perform the Salah. And it is a daily obligation upon all Muslims above mature age. Women can also perform Salah in the masjid. Many people said women can’t perform Salah in the masjid, it is just a myth. When women go for Haj they perform Salah in Masjid ul haram and this is the biggest example of women praying in a masjid.

Significance of Salah:

The importance of Salah is to ensure Muslims maintain their devotion and faith to Allah, to increase closeness to Allah and thanks to Allah for everything which he gives to us. If you want to success in life you performed five times Salah. Salah create punctuality and provide us inner peace. Salah is obligatory on every Muslim man and woman. It is a physical and spiritual act of worship that is performed five times every day at specific times.

Guidelines for performing Salah:

Salah creates discipline in a Muslim. Muslims face towards the KAABA and this direction is called the qibla, Muslims performs Salah first standing then kneeling or sitting on the ground. The main purpose of Salah is to talk to Allah Almighty. There are five daily prayers which must be performed;

• Fajr (Before Sunset)

• Zohr (Midday)

• Asr (Between Zohr and sunset)

• Maghrib (Sunset)

• Isha (Between Maghrib and midnight)

Each Salah consists of a no. of rakaats, which are split throughout the day as follows; “Fajr” consist 4 rakaat, “Zohr” consist 12 rakaat, “Asr” consist 8 rakaat, “Maghrib” consist 7 rakaat and “Isha” consist 17 rakaat.

Purification of heart

Purification of heart is the main objective of Salah. By performing Salah, a person becomes closer to Allah, due to which his faith in Islam becomes even stronger. Just as a person needs food and water to stay healthy, in the same way, the human soul needs the worship of Allah to stay healthy. It is essential to ensuring we stay remain mindful of one’s faith and also essential to ensuring we stay within the boundaries of deen.. The Messenger of Allah (P.B.U.H) stated the following:

“The place of prayer (SALAH) in religion is like the place of the head in the body.” (Majmau’l-Awsat, 3:154, (2313.) Imam Tabarani, Mu’jamu’s-Saghir)

The Messenger of Allah further (P.B.U.H) said;

“On the Day of Judgment, a slave will be questioned about his prayers first. If his prayers are good, his other deeds will be good, too. If his prayers are bad, his other deeds will be bad, too.”

What is the Importance of Prayer?

Summary of answer

Praise be to Allah.

The importance of the prayer in Islam cannot be understated. It is the first pillar of Islam that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned after mentioning the testimony of faith, by which one becomes a Muslim. It was made obligatory upon all the prophets and for all peoples. Allah has declared its obligatory status under majestic circumstances. For example, when Allah spoke directly to Moses, He said,

"And I have chosen you, so listen to that which is inspired to you. Verily, I am Allah! There is none worthy of worship but I, so worship Me and offer prayer perfectly for My remembrance." [Taha 13-14]

Similarly, the prayers were made obligatory upon the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) during his ascension to heaven. Furthermore, when Allah praises the believers, such as in the beginning of Surah al-Muminun, one of the first descriptions He states is their adherence to the prayers.

Once a man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the most virtuous deed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stated that the most virtuous deed is the prayer. The man asked again and again. The first three times, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again answered, "The prayer," then on the fourth occasion he stated, "Jihad in the way of Allah." [This is from a hadith recorded by Ahmad and ibn Hibban. According to al-Albani, the hadith is hasan. Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani, Sahih al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib (Beirut: al-Maktab al-Islami, 1982), vol. 1, p. 150]

The importance of prayer is demonstrated in many of the Prophet’s statements. For example, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,

"The first matter that the slave will be brought to account for on the Day of Judgment is the prayer. If it is sound, then the rest of his deeds will be sound. And if it is bad, then the rest of his deeds will be bad." [Recorded by al-Tabarani. According to al-Albani, it is sahih. Al-Albani, (Sahih al-Jami’, vol.1, p. 503)

The importance of the prayers lies in the fact that no matter what actions one performs in his life, the most important aspect is one’s relationship to Allah, that is, one’s faith (iman), God-consciousness (taqwa), sincerity (ikhlas) and worship of Allah (`ibadah). This relationship with Allah is both demonstrated and put into practice, as well as improved and increased, by the prayer. Therefore, if the prayers are sound and proper, the rest of the deeds will be sound and proper; and if the prayers are not sound and proper, then the rest of the deeds will not be sound and proper, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) himself stated.

In reality, if the prayer is performed properly – with true remembrance of Allah and turning to Him for forgiveness – it will have a lasting effect on the person. After he finishes the prayer, his heart will be filled with the remembrance of Allah. He will be fearful as well as hopeful of Allah. After that experience, he will not want to move from that lofty position to one wherein he disobeys Allah. Allah has mentioned this aspect of the prayer when He has said,

"Verily, the prayer keeps one from the great sins and evil deeds" (al-Ankabut 45). An-Nadwi has described this effect in the following eloquent way,

[an_Nadwi, p. 24]

The overall effect that the properly performed prayers should have upon humans is described in other verses in the Quran:

"Verily, man was created impatient, irritable when evil touches him and withholding when good touches him. Except for those devoted to prayer those who remain constant in their prayers…" (al-Ma’arij 19-23).

As for the Hereafter, Allah’s forgiveness and pleasure is closely related to the prayers. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,

"Allah has obligated five prayers . Whoever excellently performs their ablutions, prays them in their proper times, completes their bows, prostrations and khushu` [Khushu` in the prayer is where the person’s heart is attuned to the prayer. This feeling in the heart is then reflected on the body. The person remains still and calm. His gaze is also lowered. Even his voice is affected by this feeling in the heart. For more details on this concept (as well as the difference between it and khudhu`), see Muhammad al-Shayi’, al-Furuq al-Laughawiyyah wa Atharaha fi Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim (Riyadh: Maktabah al-Ubaikan, 1993), pp. 249-254.] has a promise from Allah that He will forgive him. And whoever does not do that has no promise from Allah. He may either forgive him or punish him." [Recorded by Malik, Ahmad, Abu Dawud, al-Nasai and others. According to al-Albani, it is sahih. Al-Albani, Sahih al-Jami’, vol. 1, p. 616.] ]

The prayers are a type of purification for a human being. He turns and meets with his Lord five times a day. As alluded to above, this repeated standing before Allah should keep the person from performing sins during the day. Furthermore, it should also be a time of remorse and repentance, such that he earnestly asks Allah for forgiveness for those sins that he committed. In addition, the prayer in itself is a good deed that wipes away some of the evil deeds that he performed. These points can be noted in the following hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him):

"If a person had a stream outside his door and he bathed in it five times a day, do you think he would have any filth left on him?" The people said, "No filth would remain on him whatsoever." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then said, "That is like the five daily prayers: Allah wipes away the sins by them." (Recorded by al-Bukhari and Muslim.)

In another hadith, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said,

"The five daily prayers and the Friday Prayer until the Friday prayer are expiation for what is between them." (Recorded by Muslim)

And Allah knows best.

Exploring the psychological benefits of namaz in islam.

In the intricate tapestry of Islamic faith and practice, Namaz, also known as Salat, stands as one of its most profound threads, offering profound psychological benefits of Namaz. This fundamental religious practice involves a series of physical postures, recitations, and spiritual intentions that connect Muslims with the Divine.

While Namaz is undeniably a religious obligation, it is also a source of profound psychological and spiritual benefits. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in understanding the impact of religious practices on mental health and well-being. This article embarks on a journey to explore the psychological dimensions of Namaz in Islam, shedding light on how this sacred practice can positively affect the human psyche.

Understanding Namaz in Islam

Before we delve into the psychological benefits of Namaz, it’s crucial to understand the practice itself and its significance within the Islamic faith.

Namaz, or Salat, is a form of worship in Islam that holds deep spiritual and religious significance. It consists of a sequence of physical postures, including standing, bowing, prostrating, and sitting, accompanied by specific recitations. These actions symbolize submission to Allah and serve as a means of direct communication with the Divine.

Muslims are required to perform Namaz five times a day. This frequency emphasizes its central role in a Muslim’s life, serving as a constant reminder of faith and a conduit for spiritual connection. Now, let’s explore the psychological benefits that arise from this practice.

“ Successful indeed are the believers, who are humble in their prayers. “ (Quran, Surah Al-Mu’minun 23 : 1-2)

Stress Reduction and Relaxation

One of the most apparent psychological benefits of Namaz is its capacity to reduce stress and induce relaxation. This can be attributed to several factors inherent in the practice.

The repetitive nature of Namaz movements creates a sense of calm and focus. The rhythmic motions of standing, bowing, prostrating, and sitting establish a soothing rhythm that can alleviate stress and anxiety. This repetitive pattern provides a sense of continuity and rhythm that can help reduce the turmoil of a busy mind.

Moreover, Namaz places significant emphasis on deep breathing and mindfulness. The act of taking deliberate, measured breaths during the prayer instills a sense of control over one’s body and mind. This controlled breathing not only calms the nervous system but also promotes mindfulness – being fully present in the moment.

Scientifically, research has shown that practices like Namaz, which incorporate controlled breathing and mindfulness, can reduce stress levels. These practices activate the body’s relaxation response, resulting in decreased cortisol production, the hormone associated with stress. As a result, individuals who engage in regular Namaz often experience a profound sense of inner peace and tranquility.

Improved Mental Discipline

Another remarkable psychological benefit of Namaz is its role in enhancing mental discipline. The daily practice of Namaz requires unwavering focus and concentration. Each movement and recitation demands complete attention, leaving no room for distractions.

This mental discipline cultivated through Namaz can translate into improved focus and self-control in daily life. Just as an athlete’s rigorous training builds physical strength and endurance, the regular practice of Namaz builds mental resilience and discipline. This enhanced mental discipline can be applied to various aspects of life, leading to better decision-making, increased self-control, and improved time management.

Enhanced Psychological Well-Being

Namaz not only reduces stress and cultivates mental discipline but also contributes to enhanced psychological well-being. Many Muslims report a profound sense of inner peace and contentment after performing their daily prayers.

The practice of Namaz encourages self-reflection and gratitude. During the prayer, individuals take moments to express gratitude for the blessings they have received from Allah. This practice of gratitude can foster a more optimistic perspective, helping individuals navigate life’s challenges with a positive attitude.

Moreover, the sense of connection with Allah and the act of seeking His guidance can alleviate feelings of restlessness and dissatisfaction. Regular Namaz helps individuals find meaning and purpose in their daily lives, offering a sense of direction and fulfillment.

Numerous psychological studies have explored the impact of religious practices like Namaz on overall well-being. These studies have consistently shown that individuals who engage in regular religious practices report higher levels of life satisfaction and a greater sense of psychological well-being.

Connection to Community

Namaz is not solely an individual practice; it also has a strong communal aspect. Congregational prayers in Islam, often performed at mosques, provide a sense of belonging and support within the Muslim community.

Muslims gather at the mosque for daily prayers, especially on Fridays for the Jumu’ah (Friday) prayer. This collective act of worship fosters a sense of unity and community among believers. The experience of standing shoulder to shoulder with fellow worshippers, regardless of social or economic status, emphasizes the universality of faith and the importance of unity.

The community aspect of Namaz extends beyond the mosque. Muslims worldwide share a common bond through this practice. When traveling, Muslims often find comfort in knowing they can join fellow believers in congregational prayer, irrespective of language or cultural differences.

This sense of belonging and support within the Muslim community can have significant psychological benefits. Research suggests that strong social connections are crucial for mental health and well-being. Engaging in Namaz with others provides an opportunity for social interaction, mutual support, and the development of meaningful relationships.

Coping with Life’s Challenges

In times of adversity, Namaz serves as a source of solace and emotional strength. The spiritual aspects of the practice offer comfort and guidance to individuals facing difficult life situations.

Moreover, the practice of gratitude within Namaz can enhance an individual’s ability to cope with hardships. Expressing gratitude during prayer encourages a shift in perspective. It helps individuals focus on the positive aspects of their lives, even when faced with adversity.

In conclusion, Namaz in Islam is not merely a religious obligation; it is a holistic practice that offers profound psychological benefits. Through its stress-reduction properties, promotion of mental discipline, enhancement of psychological well-being, sense of community, and capacity to help individuals cope with life’s challenges, Namaz provides a path to improved mental and emotional health.

As we continue to explore the intersection of faith and psychology, it becomes increasingly clear that Namaz has a transformative impact on the human psyche. It offers not only spiritual solace but also mental resilience and emotional well-being. It is our hope that this exploration of the psychological benefits of Namaz encourages further research and a deeper understanding of the rich tapestry of human spirituality and its impact on mental health. Ultimately, the practice of Namaz serves as a reminder that the path to inner peace and well-being can often be found in the way prescribed by the Quran and Sunnah that connect us to the divine.
