About Bilingual Speechie

best websites for speech therapy

Who are we?

Bilingual Speechie LLC. is a small business dedicated to providing inclusive and engaging speech therapy resources and activities for bilingual children, parents, SLPs and educators.

Bilingual Speechie LLC promotes bilingualism and multilingualism by dispelling common myths, providing education on bilingual language development, and promoting heritage language maintenance amongst bilingual families.

About the Owner:

Liliana Diaz-Vazquez is a certified licensed bilingual speech language pathologist (SLP), currently practicing in Chicago, Illinois. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in communication disorders (2012) and her master’s degree in speech language pathology at Saint Xavier University (2014). She is a certified member of the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) since 2014, a member of the Illinois Speech and Hearing Association (ISHA) since 2014 and maintains licensure in the state of Illinois.

Liliana is a first-generation Mexican-American Latina, a small business owner, a full-time school-based SLP, & a bilingual parent, who takes pride in her roots, culture, & heritage language. She loves being able to share her experience as a Latina SLP, and a bilingual mom, as well as her culture & heritage language with the educator, SLP, and parent community.

Liliana Diaz-Vazquez has extensive experience working with the bilingual English and Spanish speaking population & multilingual population. She specializes in augmentative/alternative communication (AAC), bilingual language development and language delays/disorders in bilingual/multilingual children. She has also worked in the early intervention setting for several years where she gained vast experience working with interpreters and bilingual/multilingual families.

Liliana began creating digital bilingual resources and activities in 2014 out of need while working full-time in the school setting as a SLP. Liliana worked with many Spanish-speaking families and quickly realized that there were limited Spanish and bilingual speech therapy resources available for her students and their families. In addition, Liliana quickly became aware that there was a need for education about bilingualism and typical bilingual language development as many of the families she worked with had encountered misinformation about bilingualism. Liliana began developing resources and eventually started Bilingual Speechie LLC with the mission to provide education to SLPs and families about bilingualism, as well as provide inclusive and diverse materials for speech therapy in order to help bilingual families and SLPs gain access to appropriate bilingual materials for children with communication disorders.

Today Liliana currently works full-time in the Chicago public school setting as a lead bilingual SLP where she consults and collaborates with SLPs daily to help them understand how to assess and provide culturally and linguistically appropriate services for bilingual and/or multilingual students. She also runs her small business, Bilingual Speechie LLC, and is on a mission to expand and grow her business so that all SLPs, educators, and families can have access to inclusive, diverse, and bilingual resources in a variety of languages for speech therapy.

Professional Development:

Liliana has vast experience as a speaker/presenter and has presented at several conferences over the years. You can view all previous conferences and topics that Liliana has presented on here . Liliana is available to present on topics such as best practices when working with multilingual populations, bilingual speech/language assessment and treatment, goal writing with multilingual populations and much more. Hi! I'm Lindsey!

I’m a pediatric SLP who specializes in the R sound. Fun fact- I actually used to dread the R but after dedicating a lot (like…  a lot a lot ) of time to researching and troubleshooting… I now love it! So much, in fact, that I currently spend my days treating “R kids” via my private practice and creating R resources and continuing education for SLPs via Speechy Things. I’m so glad you found me! Let’s “Rock the R” together!

The Best Online Speech Therapy: A 2024 Guide

Table of Contents

What is speech therapy, when is speech therapy recommended, what is online speech therapy, benefits of online speech therapy, drawbacks of online speech therapy, what to look for in an online speech therapy provider, according to experts, top online speech therapy providers.

With improving technology and the growth of telemedicine , speech-language pathologists can now offer speech therapy services online. In fact, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) considers online speech therapy appropriate and effective for many services speech-language pathologists provide [1] Telepractice . American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Accessed 1/27/23. .

Online speech therapy may offer more flexibility than in-person services, and it increases access to speech therapists for people who aren’t able to travel to a provider’s location. You can find online speech therapy on several different platforms, but before you choose a service, it’s important to know what to look for to ensure it meets your needs.

We asked experts what to look for in an online speech therapy provider and highlighted platforms that meet their criteria, have options for those with and without insurance and offer a variety of specialists and services. Read on to learn more about how speech therapy works online and providers to consider.

Sesame Care Virtual Speech Therapy

  • Match with a specialized therapist who is the perfect fit for your needs
  • Work with your therapist to develop a unique, specialized plan and unlock your most powerful communication
  • Access fun, engaging practice activities between sessions
  • View and manage your upcoming sessions
  • Supports different time zones

Speech therapy is a type of therapy provided by a licensed professional, typically a speech-language pathologist. Speech therapy helps people learn, improve or regain language or swallow function, as well as voice and cognitive communication skills. There are lots of reasons someone might need speech therapy, and therapists serve all ages, from early childhood to older adults.

Speech therapy can:

  • Treat language and speech disorders
  • Help with social communications
  • Address cognitive issues such as memory, attention and understanding
  • Improve eating and swallowing problems
  • Train your voice in different ways

A speech therapist may have their own private practice, or they may work in a school, hospital, rehabilitation facility or university. Since there’s a wide range of reasons people seek speech therapy, speech-language pathologists often specialize in working with a specific population. For example, they may focus on children with autism or adults recovering from a stroke.

Children may be recommended for speech therapy if they have a language disorder that affects their ability to learn to speak, name things or put together sentences, or a speech disorder that affects how they pronounce words.

Adults may be referred to speech therapy to recover speech and language skills as well as improve cognitive function including memory and attention after a brain injury, like a concussion or a stroke, or after a diagnosis that can impact speech or swallowing, like Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis or dementia. An adult might also look for a speech therapist to help with voice training if they use their voice for their career, like an actor, singer or public speaker. Transgender adults may work with a speech therapist for voice training while they’re in transition.

Before technology advances, a speech therapist typically treated clients in person. Now, many speech therapists offer services online via telecommunication. Telepractice services should offer the same quality as in-person services and be held to ASHA’s standards for ethical practices, according to the organization.

Instead of visiting an office or going to a facility, you’ll work with a speech therapist over a live video session, which is considered synchronous care.

Other types of telepractice include asynchronous care—which is when images, audio, clips or data is sent between a patient and therapist for viewing and evaluation at a later time—and hybrid care, which combines different types of care and could be a mix of synchronous care, asynchronous care, remote monitoring with wearable devices and apps or in-person care.

There are several different platforms that host online speech therapy services and connect speech therapists with people who need them.

Working together online can have benefits for you and the speech therapist. “Location does not dictate therapy options any longer,” says Tara Roehl, a speech-language pathologist who operates a private telepractice clinic in Colorado.

If you need a speech therapist who specializes in a certain type of therapy or has expertise working with certain conditions, you’re not limited to those in your area. The wider online pool makes it more likely for people to get the specialized help they need.

Eliminating travel also makes it easier to attend regular sessions, especially for those with mobility and transportation issues. Jessie L. Ginsburg, a speech-language pathologist and CEO of Pediatric Therapy Playhouse in Los Angeles, says she sees higher attendance rates for online therapy in her clinic, and parents are more likely to sit next to their child during online sessions and participate.

Research suggests it’s effective, too. Online practice is still relatively new in the world of speech therapy, but there is promising research. A 2020 systematic review in Perspectives examined literature on adult telepractice services from 2014 to 2019, concluding that there’s evidence to support continuing to use speech therapy telepractice for adults, but more research is needed on its effectiveness [2] Weidner K, Lowman J. Telepractice for adult speech-language pathology services: a systematic review . Perspect ASHA SIGs. 2020;5(1):326-338. .

“In some of the research that I’ve done, we showed that not only did telemedicine increase access to therapy, but the outcomes in cognitive rehabilitation were equal to if not slightly better than in-person outcomes,” says Lindsay R. James Riegler, Ph.D., a research speech-language pathologist and innovation specialist at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center.

Additionally, experts note many speech therapists who provide in-person care already utilize apps and other online programs to supplement their sessions, making the transition from in-person care to telecare more seamless.

There are limitations to what online therapy can do, and telepractice can’t replace some in-person evaluations and treatment sessions, states the ASHA.

Some therapy approaches, such as touch cues (which are used in speech therapy to show correct placement to produce certain sounds), have to be done in person, notes Ginsburg. “We might use touch cues externally on the face or lips, such as touching a finger to the lips to cue a child for the ‘m’ sound,” she explains. A therapist may also need to be physically present to observe certain facial or throat movements.

If you struggle with concentrating and engaging with a screen, online speech therapy could be more challenging. The same applies if you aren’t tech savvy and have issues using online tools. Other barriers to virtual appointments include patients with audiovisual deficits as well as those with limited internet access, in which case in-person sessions may be more beneficial.

Audio quality can also be an issue, says Evan Kennedy, a speech-language pathologist at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City. “In my work with professional singers, small differences in tone quality really matter.”

Experts advise evaluating both the service or program and the speech therapist you’ll work with through the platform.

Look at the therapist’s licenses and whether or not the platform is HIPAA compliant, advises Aaron Rothbart, a speech-language pathologist and current doctoral student at the University of Oregon.

There’s no universal speech-language pathologist license, so professionals get licensed in the state where they practice. The ASHA tracks state guidelines, many of which require speech-language pathologists to be licensed in the state where they practice, which means if they’re providing services to a client in another state, they must be licensed in that state as well.

If the provider isn’t licensed in the state where they’re providing services, an insurance company isn’t going to reimburse them, according to Riegler.

In addition to their licenses, consider what their focus is in terms of treatment as well as their patient population.

Parents looking for speech therapy services for their children should find the right therapist who has expertise in the area they need, rather than searching for the right company, advises Ginsburg. The same goes for adults.

“It is completely acceptable and expected to interview your therapist to see if it is a good fit for you,” says Roehl. She recommends asking:

  • How long have you been doing telepractice?
  • What training do you have in telepractice?
  • What training do you have that’s relevant for my speech therapy goals?
  • What can I expect to experience in a typical session?

Sesame Care Virtual Speech Therapy

With virtual sessions that fit your schedule and lifestyle, Sesame Care makes it easy to prioritize your speech therapy needs.

Forbes Health selected the following online speech therapy providers, as they check most (or all) of the boxes based on expert recommendations, including HIPAA compliance, licensed therapists in good standing with their state licensing board, speech therapists with specialized training and the ability to go through insurance. Many also offer a free consultation.

  • Better Speech is HIPAA compliant, offers speech therapists for adults and children in a wide range of specialties, works with some insurance carriers and has a private pay option with the potential for financial aid.
  • Connected Speech Pathology says its therapists have a minimum of five years experience and master’s degrees in speech-language pathology. The platform offers services for adults and children, transgender voice therapy and specialized services for those with Parkinson’s, aphasia, brain injuries and more. It does not take insurance, but the starting rate is $75 per session.
  • Great Speech has over 50 highly specialized therapists in a variety of areas, according to the company. Each has a master’s degree or higher in speech-language pathology. The platform is also HIPAA compliant and works with an array of insurance providers.
  • Expressable has services for adults and children, and its therapists all hold a master’s degree or higher, according to the company. It also works with insurance providers, health savings accounts and flexible savings accounts and allows for private payment options.

Experts note that before selecting a speech therapist, it’s important to work with your physician. They can help refer you to a speech therapist, and often also work with speech therapists to ensure optimal medical management as well—for example, prescribing medication if needed and being aware of certain complications that may arise (like those associated with swallowing issues).

Online speech therapy might not be right for every person or situation, but “when it is provided by an experienced and well-trained speech-language pathologist, it can be, and is expected to be, equal to or better than in-person services,” says Roehl.

100+ Best Speech and Language Websites and Blogs

Kidmunicate_Top_Blogs_Hero_Shot

Here is our 7th annual list of the best speech and language websites that we think speech-language pathologists and parents of kids with speech and language disorders should follow this year.

To uncover the best speech and language websites, we visit over 350 websites each year. We deleted 4 sites from the list and added 15 completely new ones and welcomed back 1.

Here is what you will find in the Best Speech and Language Pathology Websites and Blogs

  • Social Media – Like last year, we noticed that some great content producers were putting less effort into their blogs and more emphasis on their social media channels, so we added links to Facebook pages and noted the number of followers.
  • Covid – Covid-19 has changed the way SLPs do their therapy. We added Teletherapy platforms and other technology solutions to the list.
  • Diversity – The call to action for racial and ethnic equality in the field of Speech-Language Pathology is emerging, so we wanted to do our part to increase awareness around the issue by featuring some new diverse voices.

  • Websites that focus on relevant technology.

Our goal is to maintain the most relevant and up-to-date list , so every year we cut some sites due to inactivity, insufficient activity or other reasons (i.e. broken links). Some sites were simply replaced by websites that we thought were better, more useful or covered a topic that was more unique to the list. Here is a link to Speech and Language Pathology relevant websites that have made the list over the previous 6 years.

It takes a lot of time to assemble the list. We love to discover great content and share it. We also love it when we get links back to our site via a simple link, inclusion in a blogroll, or by posting our Top 100 badge (see below for the code). For those who do this, thank you.

We are always on the lookout for new sites. You can nominate your own site, plenty do, or tell us about sites we may have missed. We will add them to the consideration list for the 2022 Kidmunicate Top Blogs and Websites for Speech and Language Pathology.

These are the sites that I’ve consistently found to be most instrumental in providing resources for my online speech therapy sessions (though the resources found on these websites are relevant for in-person speech-language therapy sessions as well!)

Top SLP Sites:

1. Epic! – Books for Kids / www.getepic.com

Epic! is the leading digital library for kids 12 and under. Instantly access 25,000 of the best books, learning videos, quizzes, and more. If you are not able to sign up as an educator, a “parent” subscription is only about $5/month. I’ve I found it to be worth every penny!

2. ReadWorks.org / www.Readworks.org

Access texts at various levels, and browse based on the goal/skill you want to address.

3. K12Reader.com / www.K12reader.com

This website has tons of speech therapy worksheets for reading comprehension, as well as for various skills/goals. I like that when you browse for a worksheet, it tells you the grade levels, levels, and common core standards. This is great for getting an idea of what your students are expected to do in their classrooms, based on their grade levels.

4. VisualThesaurus.com / www.VisualThesaurus.com/VocabGrabber

This website analyzes any text you’re interested in, generating lists of the most useful vocabulary words, and showing you how those words are used in context. Just copy text from a document, paste it into the box, and click on the “Grab Vocabulary!” button. VocabGrabber will automatically create a list of vocabulary from your text, which you can then sort, filter, and save.

5. Home-Speech-Home / www.Home-Speech-Home.com

This site offers numerous speech resources from ideas/activities to word lists.

6. Mommy Speech Therapy / www.MommySpeechTherapy.com

This site is primarily written to address parents with concerns about their child’s articulation skills, but there are many, free downloadable/printable pages that you may find useful…especially if you are just starting out as an SLP.

7. Emotional Skill Sharing Site / jillkuzma.wordpress.com/great-websites-and-resources/

This site was created for professionals who work with students on social/emotional skills in the school setting. Most of the material is geared toward students from Kindergarten – 8th grade. This site has numerous teaching tools to download and use, tips for promoting pragmatic language and social-emotional skill success at home, and other useful links and resources.

8. PBS Kids / www.PBSKids.org

This site is part of the PBS Kids television channel, and provides games and videos that incorporate some of kids’ favorite PBS characters (e.g., Arthur, Curious George, Odd Squad). Your younger students will recognize the characters, which I find helps to increase engagement.

9. Speaking of Speech / www.SpeakingOfSpeech.com

This website is a materials exchange, with a  wealth of information and downloads in the following areas: articulation, auditory processing, AAC, caseload management, data forms, fluency, homework packets, language, lesson plans, literacy, life skills, medical/clinical, middle/high school, recipes/cooking/ social/pragmatics, thematic units, and therapy games. The free materials have been generously donated by various visitors to this site.

  • Education.com /  www.Education.com

This site offers a free (or paid) subscription to worksheets, activities, and board games that you can download and print. With a paid subscription, you can create a login for students, assign interactive games, and chart student progress. There is a tutorial to view once you’ve created your account.

In the words of Rod Stewart, “Have I told you lately that I love you?” 🙂 This list is amazing. I’ve been in/out of the SLP field for almost 20 years and am beginning to work in my daughter’s elementary school this year. Your resources are some of the best I’ve seen. Your work is fantastic and a HUGE gift to so many. Keep on keepin’ on!!!

6 Free Online Speech Therapy Resources For Kids

6 Free Online Speech Therapy Resources For Kids

As parents, you know there are many ways to enrich your child’s speech and language skills, including games, books, and language modeling activities. Online speech therapy resources offer your child a way to refine and practice their speech and language skills at home. Sometimes your child needs a little extra speech therapy, whether it is to refine certain skills they are learning on at school, reinforce what they are working on with their SLP, or just an extra resource to help build speech sounds. When looking to enhance your child’s speech therapy using online resources, we have located a few favorites that won’t take a bite out of your wallet.

Looking for Virtual Speech Therapy?

Speech Buddies Connect is the first online network for parents to find and book appointments with top-quality, certified & local speech professionals. You can filter your search to find Speech-Language Pathologist that offer virtual therapy in your state.

The Best Tools & Games for Speech Practice at Home

6 Favorite Online Speech Therapy Websites:

StoryPlace.org :  StoryPlace.org is a website that has a number of online stories and interactive activities for preschoolers and elementary-aged students. Each theme includes an online story, online activity, printable “take-home” activities and suggestions for parents. A booklist that corresponds to each theme is also offered.

FunwithSpot.com  is a cute website for preschoolers and young children. Children familiar with the Spot book series will love the fun language-based games. There are also parent and teacher resources.

Tell us some of your favorites! We’d love to build our collection!

Looking to Put Your New Tablet to Use?

An important part of using online speech therapy tools is to interact with your child while he or she is online. The best online speech therapy sites are not intended to engage your child passively, (think staring at a video game on tv), rather they are to be used as a tool to engage your child and get his brain making connections. Making learning fun is also a crucial component to get your child engaged. Playing online speech therapy games should not feel like homework for your child, rather, a fun activity that you can do together. Here are a few of our favorites, what are some of yours?

Update: The Speech Buddies Team just added some boards to the FREE Bitsboard app !  It’s easy to download and play speech games today on your iPad or iPhone! Bitsboard is a revolutionary app that allows anyone (educators, education companies like Speech Buddies, and even parents) to customize fun, visually pleasing, and versatile games around a given theme.

Parent's Guide to Speech & Communication Challenges

We created comprehensive tool for children with development or behavioral disorders, it’s called DrOmnibus.com Feel free to check it out, each of our games focus on one particular skill (also speech skills!). Right now it’s available on Android, but we aim to launch on iPads in June :)

If you work with people who have communication disorders—whether as a practicing speech-language pathologist (SLP), a family member of someone with speech-language issues, or a grad student in a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology (MS-SLP) program—you need resources for teaching new language skills and growing your knowledge base. In this post, we list several types of resources for speech therapists: websites and blogs where you can download materials and keep up with research, memoirs by people with communication disorders, and associations where you can make professional connections.

Home Speech Home

Home Speech Home features a blog, word lists, tips, activities, flashcards, speech-therapy apps, and other free resources and fee-based therapy materials created by the authors, a married couple who are both CCC-SLPs. Resources for children and adults are available.

Speechy Musings

Speechy Musings was launched by a young, passionate SLP whose focus is creating practical, easy-to-use materials for pediatric SLPs. The site includes resources for purchase, freebies, a goal bank, and a blog.

Mommy Speech Therapy

Created by an SLP who is also a mom, Mommy Speech Therapy is aimed at parents and SLPs. The site features free worksheets and a blog with practical advice on how to teach children specific language skills and social skills.

Teachers Pay Teachers

On Teachers Pay Teachers , speech therapists can purchase SLP teaching and therapy materials directly from the teachers who created them—or find free resources. Search for specialized lessons from this vast platform.

The Informed SLP

The Informed SLP is a subscription-based site that distills research from top speech-language pathology journals into plain-language reviews of articles that are relevant to clinical practice. These reviews are available in web, print, and audio formats, so speech therapists can spend less time reading and more time treating.

Associations

It has over 12,000 members and 320 chapters. Best Speech Therapy Apps

best websites for speech therapy

Most children are fascinated with electronic devices.

And it’s not at all surprising, as us adults also spend so much time on them these days.

If you sometimes find it challenging to keep your child’s attention during speech therapy, a speech therapy app might be able to help.

There are some fantastic apps available to help motivate your child to learn and practice their language skills .

We found and reviewed five of the best speech therapy apps to help you find the right one for your child’s needs.

Let’s take a closer look.

1. Articulation Station (Best for Articulation and Enunciation)

2. my talking tom (best for reluctant talkers), 3. starfall abcs (best for alphabet practice), 4. splingo’s language universe (best for receptive language skills), 5. lamp words for life (best for autism), which speech therapy app is the best, best speech therapy apps reviews.

articstation1

Articulation Station was developed by Little Bee Speech.

This speech therapy app is one of the most comprehensive language-learning apps around.

Articulation Station is a fantastic tool you can use to encourage children to articulate and pronounce their words correctly.

The app allows you to play within various levels to suit your child’s needs, working at word, sentence, or story level.

It features over 1,000 pictures based on sounds that are targeted regularly by speech-language practitioners.

The pictures respond to 22 different sounds for your child to work on, placing the sound at the beginning, middle, or end of words, or all three.

In turn, this helps your child practice the different sound placements in a variety of words.

It’s cute, colorful, and interactive and will keep your child engaged while learning.

Your child can press the flashcard to turn it over, play a game of memory, or read a story containing key sounds.

It also has a record function that provides audio feedback within the game, which is really useful.

Plus, it will also save your child’s progress so that they can progress through the levels.

  • Comprehensive learning tool
  • Free trial version to test if your child responds to it
  • Gives audio feedback
  • Allows you to track progress
  • Option to buy only the sounds you need
  • The free version only features one sound
  • The full version is pricier than some of the others we found

best websites for speech therapy

Outfit7 released My Talking Tom in 2010, but it’s still our favorite “talking animals” app to this day.

The My Talking Tom app wasn’t specifically designed for speech therapy.

Still, it’s our go-to app for getting reluctant talkers talking.

The game features a cat that repeats everything you say back to you in a funny voice, and children love it.

It works really well for motivating them to practice their sounds and words.

You can challenge them to see how many times they can get the cat to say its “p” or “sh” sound correctly.

As a reward, they can then access the game’s other features, which include feeding, dressing, and petting him.

Plus, it has plenty of mini-games built within, including puzzles, memory games, and football goal-shoot.

The free version does contain a lot of ads, but you have the option to subscribe monthly for unlimited ad-free play.

  • Motivates children to talk
  • Provides audio feedback
  • Very popular with children
  • Lots of ads in the free version

Starfall ABCs is by the Starfall Education Foundation, a publicly funded non-profit organization.

This app is an excellent tool for helping your child learn the alphabet and practice their sounds.

Starfall’s ABCs app is a solid, teacher-approved tool designed to help children learn their ABCs.

The app is colorful and fun, teaching children lower and uppercase letters and showing them how they sound.

The app also teaches children about vowels, counting, colors, and more.

Some of the content is only available if you donate Starfall.

And if you choose to, it’s nice to see your money going to a non-profit organization.

Some parents find that they don’t have to donate, as there is plenty of free content they can access.

All of these will help your child learn the alphabet and widen their vocabulary.

Within the free content, your child will have the opportunity to see, hear, and interact with each letter, in context with words and sentences.

It contains songs with actions that are fun to learn together, and it also has lots of interactive mini-games for them to play.

It’s a really great example of how learning can be made fun, containing the perfect amount of repetition and silliness to keep kids interested.

For example, they can watch the letter “T” roll onto the screen on a train, with turtles playing tunes at the end of it.

Then, they can have fun sorting the capital and lowercase letters out or picking the odd ones out.

You can encourage your child to repeat the sounds and words they hear.

Overall, it’s a great free resource, and it will massively improve your child’s confidence in the classroom.

  • Teacher-approved
  • Free content with no ads
  • Wide-ranging content
  • Improves enunciation
  • Also teaches the alphabet in sign language
  • No audio feedback
  • Doesn’t save progress

District Speech and Language Therapy Washington DC speech language therapists blog 14b

Splingo was released by the Speech and Language store.

It is an instructional app that will help improve listening and language skills.

We love that Splingo was designed by speech and language therapists and aligns with common core standards for speaking and listening.

It focuses on nouns, verbs, prepositions, and adjectives.

The learning is fun and appealing to children, primarily due to the colorful Splingo alien character the game is centered around.

Children are given instructions they must follow to complete tasks and progress through the game.

It is designed in a way that users can play it in multiple difficulty levels, so you can set it to your child’s current ability.

There is also an option to save their progress.

Unfortunately, this game is only available on iOS devices (not Android), which means you need an iPhone or iPad to play it.

For those that do have an Apple device, there is a lot of great content on this app.

Best of all is that it’s available at an incredibly low one-off price.

  • Very affordable
  • Teaches multiple language goals at once
  • Developed by speech and language therapists
  • Saves your child’s progress
  • Not available on Android devices

lampwfl k2

Developed by Prentke Romich College, LAMP aims to help children with autism advance their speech and communication skills.

This app is based on the Language Acquisition through Motor Planning (LAMP) system.

LAMP has proven to be highly successful in improving speech skills in children with autism and allows unlimited language growth opportunities.

It features a consistent motor pattern for words, and its systematic approach to learning is comforting to children with autism.

It contains three different vocabulary levels (introductory, transition, and full) that range from 83 to 3,000 words.

It’s a symbols-based approach that works well with young children who are just beginning to communicate.

It is also suitable for older kids with advanced skills.

This app has been around for a few years, and it consistently rates very highly with parents.

However, it is also quite pricey and only available on the iPad, making access difficult for some.

  • Suitable for all abilities
  • Offers a consistent, systematic approach to learning
  • A proven strategy for developing language skills
  • Only available on iPad

Choosing a single winner out of the five apps is a tricky task.

After all, the best speech therapy apps for one child will be different for the next.

Each child has different needs, and we hope you find something on this list that will help develop your child’s speech and language skills somehow.

If we had to pick a winner, we would vote for Splingo’s Language Universe.

We love that SLPs designed it, the content is solid, and the app is also very affordable.

It would also help if you try to limit your child’s screen time, and these great toys and books can help with that.

"Robin is amazing! She has made my daughter feel comfortable throughout the entire process! She was always open to try new techniques and adjust the process to find what clicked with my daughter."

Robin helped this client improve their sound production and overall conversational speech.
"We had the most perfect therapist, Fabine. She was joyful, patient, encouraging and always enthusiastic. Our daughter quickly mastered the work and was discharged months earlier than we expected! We liked the twice a week format. It was clearly more beneficial than once a week, in person. Additionally, the homework helped us support her new sounds at home."

Fabine helped this client reach age-appropriate sound production to effectively communicate their thoughts and ideas.
"Inga gave me hope in a world of false diagnoses. She was beyond sweet and caring with my son. The screen did not make the session feel distant or dry, it felt very familiar and every week we looked forward to it."

Any questions?

Communication is one of our most vital, life-long skills. Speech therapy can help children reach communication milestones appropriate for their age; clearly articulate their thoughts, feelings, and ideas; comprehend the language of others; and develop socially. It also contributes to their academic success and emotional well-being. Plus so much more!

The first step is to schedule an evaluation with a speech therapist. They’ll assess your child’s communication development and make a professional recommendation as to whether your child could benefit from speech therapy.

There is no minimum age. Communication skills begin developing in infancy. Building strong language skills in very young children can set the foundation for strong communication and literacy skills later on. Speech therapy is particularly important for children who aren’t reaching age-appropriate communication milestones, or who are experiencing difficulties such as stuttering or a lisp. Because speech and language patterns become more ingrained over time, the earlier speech errors can be corrected, the better the outcomes are likely to be.

The duration of speech therapy is different for everyone, and it depends on several factors. This includes the type of speech disorder or communication challenge, the frequency of speech therapy sessions, how often you and your child practice the skills taught in speech therapy at home, your child’s age, any underlying medical conditions, and more.

Most children love online speech therapy! Many become more attentive with online learning, and they prefer the interactivity of online exercises and communication. Plus, there are many effective strategies that speech therapists use to engage children online. Expressable’s model of care also focuses on the most important component of improving children’s speech and language skills: the involvement of their parent or caregiver. When parents are actively involved in their child’s care, that leads to faster progress. Our therapists work directly with caregivers to teach them techniques and strategies they can use in their child’s everyday life.

Speech therapy sessions are focused on each client’s care plan, and the activities done during sessions always relate to those goals. So, if a person is in speech therapy to better pronounce the /s/ sound, they’ll begin by learning how to make the sound by itself and work up to practicing it in conversation. Or if someone wants to improve the quality of their voice, their speech therapist will teach them appropriate breathing and vocal exercises. The therapist will aim to do as many trials of each exercise as possible, in order to make the most of each session.

Your speech therapist will constantly be measuring and assessing your response to these exercises. When needed, they’ll make changes to your treatment plan to help you make progress as quickly as possible. Regardless of your goals, your speech therapist will always provide practice activities to complete at home between sessions.

Expressable currently accepts many of the largest insurance companies, and we’re actively working on contracting with new plans across the country. We also offer affordable private pay options and accept HSAs/FSAs for those who do not have insurance coverage or prefer to pay out-of-pocket.
