The PhD in Physical Education at Springfield College is one of approximately 25 programs in the United States, and the only one housed at a small-to-medium-sized college. This niche allows graduates of the program to be uniquely prepared to fill gaps in the job market. Specifically, graduates are well-positioned to attain and flourish in faculty and athletic leadership positions in higher education. The curriculum, experiences, and nature of the bachelor's and master's programs at Springfield College combine to support the success of doctoral students.
The PhD in Physical Education curriculum includes a choice of tracks in Physical Education Teacher Education, Athletic Administration, or the flexible General Studies. From there, students engage in a rigorous research sequence culminating in the dissertation in a student-identified area of interest. Another element of choice is the cognate, in which students explore a selected focus area within physical education, such as adapted physical education, ethical and legal dimensions, or psychosocial aspects. A final curricular highlight is the Preparing Future Faculty series where students examine the roles and responsibilities of faculty.
Experiences within the program include field time, academic and social gatherings, research collaborations, and interactions with peers who have taught, coached, or led in a variety of settings. Students are also encouraged to apply for teaching fellowships to further build competence and confidence in faculty responsibilities.
Key to the structure of the doctoral program is the relationship to the bachelor's and master's programs in Physical Education and Athletic Administration. These programs are well-renowned and offer doctoral students opportunities to mentor, teach, and supervise student teachers while receiving guidance and feedback from a faculty member.
Recent graduates of the PhD program have landed positions as faculty and administrators in higher education across the United States and around the world. Many are seen presenting at national and international conferences and publishing their work in academic journals.

Career Paths You Can Take with a Physical Education Degree
December 29, 2020 | Written By Ben Kissam
Do you feel called to educate others to live healthy lives through fitness? Do you feel called to coach others to enjoy athletic competition through sport participation? If so, pursuing a graduate physical education degree could be a great option for you.
Physical educators work on the front lines each day to help students stay healthy, not just physically but also mentally and emotionally. With about 13.7 million overweight or obese children in the United States , according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), these educators can play a key role in reversing the trend. Many also serve as leaders and change agents in their communities, whether as coaches, counselors, or managers in a variety of settings.
Here’s a look at the graduate physical education degree programs Azusa Pacific University offers, and the many careers your education could lead to.
MS in Physical Education
Earning a graduate physical education degree doesn’t mean you have to become a teacher. In fact, APU offers concentrations and specializations that allow you to tailor your skills and interests for careers in athletics, leadership, or counseling.
“APU’s graduate physical education programs are time-honored, with the first graduate physical curriculum offered approximately 50 years ago,” said Cindy Tanis, PhD, director of graduate physical education and an associate professor at Azusa Pacific. “The program has transitioned over time according to professional standards and credentials, becoming what is now the prestigious Master of Science in Physical Education.”
Non-teaching jobs you can find with an MS in Physical Education include:
- Athletic coach
- Health and wellness coordinator
- High school/college athletic counselor
- High school/college athletic director
You can even merge sports and business with APU’s sport management concentrations —a highly marketable distinction that can provide you the skills and insights needed to become a manager, PR professional, or even a sports entrepreneur.
“This program is thorough and well-rounded, leaving the graduate confident in their ability to be a difference-maker in their community and in the lives of those whom they serve,” said Kody Moffat, MS ’19, a professor and men’s water polo coach at Palomar College. “The master’s in physical education program at Azusa Pacific University equipped me with the knowledge, resources, network, and confidence to be successful as I continue to pursue teaching and coaching at the community college level.”
MA in Physical Education with Single Subject Teaching Credential
If you know academics is the career path you want to pursue, the single subject teaching credential at APU may be the path for you. This program equips students to teach at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.
“The master’s degree program was a great source of information, and I still refer to some of the projects I did to help me now when I am teaching,” said Lani Ruh, ’17, a professor and water polo and swimming coach at Mt. San Antonio College. “I was able to get my dream career because of the help, support, and encouragement by those in the program! College is an important time of growing and learning in a young person’s life, and it is a blessing to be able to be a part of their journey.”
Those who successfully complete this program earn a 2042 Preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing , meaning they can teach physical education in California.
Other jobs you can get with this degree include:
- Adventure/outdoor educator
- Athletic director
- College professor
- Fitness instructor
- Health/wellness teacher
While a master’s degree isn’t required to teach physical education in K-12 settings, having one can set you apart from other candidates when you look for your first job. Plus, your salary will likely be higher than if you only have a bachelor’s degree.
MA in Physical Education with Adapted Physical Education Added Authorization
It might surprise you to learn that children and adults with disabilities are at the greatest risk for obesity , per the CDC, and health care costs for this demographic surpass $44 billion each year in America. If you want to serve this demographic in need of change agents—and challenge yourself professionally in the process—APU’s MA in Physical Education with Adapted Physical Education Added Authorization can help you do just that.
More specifically, the 15-unit Adapted Physical Education Added Authorization specialization allows you to develop the pedagogical abilities needed to instruct all students. In addition, you can learn how to assess and develop gross motor skill goals, write an Individualized Education Program (IEP), and learn how to impact students with physical and intellectual disabilities.
“You get to know your students at a more personable level, help them achieve their goals, advocate for their rights, and make a difference in their physical education,” said Margarita Pulido, MA ’19, an adapted physical education teacher in the Anaheim Elementary School District. “It is a career that requires you to think critically and outside the box, be creative and patient, and most importantly, have fun.”
Potential careers you could pursue with this degree and experience include:
- Camp/activities program directo
- College professorr
- Special education lobbyist/activist
- Special education teacher
As you can see, a physical education degree can be tailored to meet your individual career goals. “APU offers multiple options and emphases related to physical education to help students find the program that aligns with their career path,” said Tanis. When deciding which path to pursue, Tanis recommends asking questions such as: Is the program long-standing and reputable? Is it accredited? Does the program have professors trained in physical education? And if you want to make a difference through physical education and sport, earning an advanced degree will set you up for career success from the start.

If you are preparing to advance your studies and are thinking of taking a degree program in physical education, then this post will help you make up your mind. It clears the air on the, ‘what jobs can you get with a physical education degree?’ question that students normally ask. Why Physical Education is ImportantThe capacity to accomplish the prompting of the mind depends largely on the physical health. John F. Kennedy in assent to this fact quoted, “Intelligence and skill can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong”. This statement reflects the degree of relevance attached to physical fitness and health. But it seems a large number of the populace do not possess knowledge of how to achieve good physical condition, which is why over one third of American adults are reported to be obese while over two third of adults in America are either overweight or obese. The issue cuts across to children as 31.8% are also believed to be obese or overweight. This calls for sensitization and enlightenment of the public in regard to the benefits of physical training, how to exercise, as well as proper dieting. The duty of providing guidance for physical health improvement rests on physical education instructors who aid individuals in achieving flexibility, increased muscular strength, proper body shape, and cardiovascular endurance. They impart knowledge of the body and suggest ways to develop it physically. The knowledge they impart usually referred to as physical education goes a long way in increasing self-confidence and boosting the sense of self-worth in individuals. It gives people an opportunity to view themselves from a positive angle as well as taking responsibility for their health. Physical education teachers/instructors aren’t exactly big earners, but they take home decent amount of cash (as much as $41,000 annually) for just having fun, which is why a physical education course ranked 70th most popular degree out of 200 others studied in the U.S. A physical education degree furnishes graduates with valuable skills, such as skills for creative and critical thinking, interpersonal and teambuilding skills, as well as the passion to help others. There are a couple of things you can do with physical education degree ranging from being Usain Bolt’s fitness instructor to becoming Chicago Bulls Basketball coach, or the more noble profession of teaching in schools. The position varies according to experience and class of degree. What can you do with a Physical Education Associate’s Degree? With an Associate’s degree in physical education, you can qualify for job positions as: - Athletic Trainer: They help athletes in preventing injuries during sports activities; they provide emergency care, and under the supervision of medical doctor diagnose and treat injuries related to the muscle and bone. They are also responsible for keeping records and preparing sports budget. See detailed athletic trainer job description .
- Diving Coach: The job of a diving coach revolves around the recruitment, teaching, and motivation of swimming athletes. They supervise the performance of divers and provide guidance to improve their fitness.
- Umpire: They are responsible for officiating sports events, ensuring that sports rules are obeyed. They judge the performance of competitors to score them appropriately and determine the results of a game. They also take record of event duration, assess players and impose penalties.
The salary of a coach according to 2014 BLS report, is projected at $39,150 annually. There are limited job opportunities available to physical education degree graduates; most entry level jobs require at least a Bachelor’s degree. What can you do with a Physical Education Bachelor’s Degree? With a Bachelor’s degree in physical education, one can take up a career in any of the following areas: - Physical Education Teacher: They help students in developing physical strength and flexibility as well as coordination and cardiovascular endurance. They promote teamwork among students through games, and also provide knowledge of healthy diet and activities that boost morale and enthusiasm.
- Dietician: They provide assessment of patient’s/client’s diet needs; they map out proper meal plans for clients, assess the impact of a diet and adjust accordingly; and they possess knowledge of current nutritional research and trend.
- Soccer Coach: Their duties involve building a football team, helping players develop physical fitness and skills through training, as well as mentoring and motivating them. They also monitor them to identify problems and help them to adjust. They basically manage a soccer team and their gameplay so as to emerge victorious in matches.
- Yoga Instructor: They aid students in achieving mental, breathe, and body balance by taking them through a series of poses (asanas), which helps in improving flexibility, balance and mental focus.
- Aerobic Fitness Instructor: Their duties entail helping clients prepare suitable health plan for physical fitness improvement. They work with their clients, ensuring that safety is maintained while striving to achieve set target. They also provide information as relates to proper exercising techniques and healthy eating pattern.
Physical education majors with Bachelor’s degree are estimated to earn on an average as much as $47,335 annually. Going for advanced degrees create an avenue for career growth and increased earnings. With a Master’s or Doctorate degree, you can earn as much as $51,500 and $55,062 respectively on a yearly basis. Some schools require physical education teachers to hold a Master’s degree while some training facilities also require personal trainers to have a Master’s. What can you do with a Master’s or Doctorate Degree? With advanced degrees, you can find jobs as: - Athletic Director: Tasked with the responsibility of managing athletic programs; they supervise coaches as well as prepare sports budget.
- Personal Trainer: They assist clients in achieving their set fitness goals; they motivate, instruct, and encourage them throughout the process.
The U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts an 8% job growth rate for fitness instructors while the growth rate for physical education teachers remain unknown though it is speculated to be average or below average as there’s only a 7% increase in jobs for high school teachers. The need to achieve great body fitness and improve performance in sports will continue to create job opportunities for people with a degree in physical education. From the diverse things you can do with a physical education degree, including athletic trainer, diving coach, physical education teacher, dietician, and athletic director, it is clear that taking a career in the physical education field is promising. From large labs to small teams, mentorship thrivesPress contact :. Previous image Next image Each year, new MIT graduate students are tasked with the momentous decision of choosing a research group that will serve as their home for the next several years. Among many questions they face: join an established research effort, or work with a new faculty member in a growing group? Professors Cynthia Breazeal, leading a group of over 30 students, and Ming Guo, with a lab of fewer than 10, demonstrate that excellent mentorship can thrive in a research group of any size. Cynthia Breazeal: Flexible leadership Cynthia Breazeal is a professor of media arts and sciences at MIT, where she founded and directs the Personal Robots group at the MIT Media Lab. She is also the MIT dean for digital learning, leading MIT Open Learning’s business and research and engagement units. Breazeal is a pioneer of social robotics and human-robot interaction, and her research group investigates social robots applied to education, pediatrics, health and wellness, and aging. Breazeal’s focus on taking multidisciplinary approaches to her research has resulted in an inclusive and supportive lab environment. Moreover, she does not shy away from taking students with unconventional backgrounds. One nominator joined Breazeal's lab as a design researcher without a computer science background. However, Breazeal recognized the value of their work within the context of her lab’s research directions. “I was a bit of an oddball in the group”, the nominator modestly recounts, “but had joined to help make the work in the group more human-centered.” Throughout the student's academic journey, Breazeal offered unwavering support, whether by connecting them with experts to solve specific problems or guiding them through the academic job search process. Over the Covid-19 pandemic, Breazeal prioritized gathering student feedback through a survey about how she could best support her research group. In response to this input, Breazeal established the Senior Research Team (SRT) within her group. The SRT includes PhD holders such as postdocs and research scientists who provide personalized mentorship to one or two graduate students per semester. The SRT members serve as dedicated advocates and points of contact, with weekly check-ins to address questions within the lab. Additionally, SRT members meet by themselves weekly to discuss student concerns and bring up urgent issues with Breazeal directly. Lastly, students can sign up for meetings with Breazeal and participate in paper review sessions with her and co-authors. In the nominator’s opinion, this new system was implemented because Breazeal cares about her students and her lab culture. With over 30 members in her group, Breazeal cannot provide hands-on support for everyone daily, but she still deeply cares about each person's experience in the lab. The nominator shared that Breazeal “understands as she progresses in her career, she needs to make sure that she is changing and creating new systems for her research group to continue to operate smoothly.” Ming Guo: Emphasizing learning over achievement Ming Guo is an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Guo’s group works at the interface of mechanics, physics, and cell biology, seeking to understand how physical properties and biological function affect each other in cellular systems. A key aspect of Guo’s mentorship style is his ability to foster an environment where students feel comfortable expressing their difficulties. He actively shows empathy for his students’ lives outside of the lab, often reaching out to provide support during challenging times. When one nominator found themselves faced with significant personal difficulties, Guo made a point to check in regularly, ensuring the student had a support network of friends and labmates. Guo champions his students both academically and personally. For instance, when a collaborating lab placed unrealistic expectations on a student’s experimental output, Guo openly praised the student’s efforts and achievements in a joint meeting, alleviating pressure and highlighting the student’s hard work. In addition, Guo encourages vulnerable conversations about issues affecting students, such as political developments and racial inequities. During the graduate student unionization process, he fostered open discussion, showing genuine interest in understanding the challenges faced by graduate students and using these insights to better support them. In Guo’s research group, learning and development are prioritized over achievements and goals. When students encounter challenges in their research, Guo helps them maintain perspective by validating their struggles and recognizing the skills they acquire through difficult experiments. By celebrating their progress and emphasizing the importance of the learning process, he ensures that students understand the value of their experiences beyond outcomes. This approach not only boosts their confidence, but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the scientific process and their own development as researchers. Guo says that he feels most energized and happy when he talks to students. He looks forward to the new ideas that they present. One nominator commented on how much Guo enjoys giving feedback at group meetings: “Sometimes he isn’t convinced in the beginning, but he has cultivated our lab atmosphere to be conducive to extended discussion.” The nominator continues, “When things do work and become really interesting, he is extremely excited with us and pushes us to share our own ideas with the wider research community.” Share this news article on:Related links. - Cynthia Breazeal

Advertisement 19 Facts About Tim Walz, Harris’s Pick for Vice PresidentMr. Walz, the governor of Minnesota, worked as a high school social studies teacher and football coach, served in the Army National Guard and chooses Diet Mountain Dew over alcohol. By Simon J. Levien and Maggie Astor - Published Aug. 6, 2024 Updated Aug. 9, 2024
Until recently, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota was a virtual unknown outside of the Midwest, even among Democrats. But his stock rose fast in the days after President Biden withdrew from the race, clearing a path for Ms. Harris to replace him and pick Mr. Walz as her No. 2. Here’s a closer look at the Democrats’ new choice for vice president. 1. He is a (very recent) social media darling . Mr. Walz has enjoyed a groundswell of support online from users commenting on his Midwestern “dad vibes” and appealing ordinariness. 2. He started the whole “weird” thing. It was Mr. Walz who labeled former President Donald J. Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, “weird” on cable television just a couple of weeks ago. The description soon became a Democratic talking point. 3. He named a highway after Prince and signed the bill in purple ink. “I think we can lay to rest that this is the coolest bill signing we’ll ever do,” he said as he put his name on legislation declaring a stretch of Highway 5 the “Prince Rogers Nelson Memorial Highway” after the musician who had lived in Minnesota. 4. He reminds you of your high school history teacher for a reason. Mr. Walz taught high school social studies and geography — first in Alliance, Neb., and then in Mankato, Minn. — before entering politics. 5. He taught in China in 1989 and speaks some Mandarin. He went to China for a year after graduating from college and taught English there through a program affiliated with Harvard University. We are having trouble retrieving the article content.
