Marketing is concerned with decisions related to a firm's customers, competitors, and partners' network, including channel members and promotion agencies. It focuses on how firms design products, services and create value for their customers and related partners. Marketing is genuinely interdisciplinary, drawing theories and methods from disciplines such as anthropology, economics, psychology, sociology, and statistics, among others. SME's doctoral program in Marketing prepares students to advance knowledge of the complex interactions between consumers and markets. Students work collaboratively with faculty and industry experts to gain the practical, quantitative, and analytical skills necessary to conduct their research work. The doctoral program in Marketing aims to bring theoretical rigor and business application and offer students an unmatched interdisciplinary environment to generate creative ideas and hypotheses. Research interests of marketing faculty and doctoral students include consumer decision-making, marketing communication, innovation, pricing, marketing strategy, and product development.

People are at the heart of modern economic activity. Their capabilities and attitudes make possible new ideas and innovations that, in turn, fuel economic prosperity. The Human Capital and Organizational Dynamics area at the School of Management and Entrepreneurship, IIT Jodhpur, has been conceptualized to further the people-centric approach to understanding modern socioeconomic settings' structure and functioning. Instrumental to this vision, the area's pedagogy is conceived on two related lines. One line of academic offerings systematically explores how people learn and build their capabilities to suit and push socioeconomic contours. The second line of reasoning attempts at understanding how people put to use their abilities within microcosms of socioeconomic systems, i.e., organizations. The area offers various core and elective courses to train young professionals on these two counts. Besides, the site also nurtures experienced professionals to augment their contributions in their pursuant endeavors through short term and long term training engagements. Vision of the Programme

image

The objective of the Doctoral Programme in Management is to equip students with necessary skills to identify and carry out research on complex issues in a specialized field of management. The programme is strongly committed to preparing thought leaders, both for the academic and corporate world. Graduates of the Doctoral Programme in Management are placed in world class organizations in teaching, research and consulting positions. A total of 471 doctoral students have graduated from IIMA so far.

The Doctoral Programme in Management seeks candidates with outstanding academic credentials, intellectual curiosity and discipline needed to make scholarly contributions that advance the frontiers of knowledge. It provides a diverse set of opportunities for interdisciplinary learning and research. The student opts for one of eleven functional/sectoral areas and acquires super specialized theoretical knowledge and mastery of practical aspects of the area.

The small class size allows close interaction with faculty members, who provide the intellectual stimulus and help develop the student's research interests and professional goals. Students generally spend a little over four years to complete their Ph.D. which includes two years of rigorous course work.

Course work in the first year provides a general management overview and develops basic skills for analyzing managerial problems. In the second year, students take advanced Doctoral courses in their areas of high levels of specialization. After completing the course work, students have to pass an area comprehensive examination to demonstrate that they have reached a level of proficiency in the area of high levels of specialization.  The Ph.D. dissertation, for the next couple of years, provides them with an opportunity to make original contribution to an area of management or to one of its source disciplines. Students admitted to the Doctoral Programme in Management receive a comprehensive fellowship that covers all costs and in addition provides a modest living allowance.

Ph.D. in innovation and management in education is offered only in IIM A across India, and this unique interdisciplinary course of management and education provides ample opportunity to research in the diverse field within the education sector. The option to choose multiple courses from different management sub-disciplines during coursework in the Ph.D. programme at IIM A has helped me broaden my understanding and knowledge about management education and research. Ph.D. programme at IIM A provides a unique platform in terms of the diverse cohort to hone research skills as the mix of qualitative and quantitative researchers help and support each other in mutual and shared learning.

Nirved Kumar Year of Joining: 2020, Area: RJMCEI

My experience with IIM A, till now, can be summarized in three words - rigour, learning, and development. The coursework is vast and intense. I would admit that the first year of coursework has helped me take a quantum leap into the world of academics. The faculty members are extremely supportive and patient. Additionally, there is ample scope, here, to pursue one’s extra-curricular interests. The community is very tightly knit and my batch profile is so diverse that the past one year was peppered with numerous instances of peer learning - academic as well as non-academic.

BITS Pilani launches PhD Program to create Deep Tech Ventures

phd in innovation and entrepreneurship in india

BITS Pilani has announced the launch of an innovative PhD Program that would result in creation of a startup based on research done during the PhD. The program will focus on creation of deep tech and deep science startup ventures, that will solve some of the most critical societal and business challenges. This is keeping in line with BITS Pilani’s history of introducing innovations in the higher education space over the past 60 Years, be it the Practice School concept, the first ever dual-degree programs or newer pedagogical practices.

The new program, to be called as PhD-DRIVE, short for Deep-tech Research, Innovation, Value generation & Entrepreneurship, will admit students with expertise in technology and science, and a clear intent to set up a startup. The program will include courses in entrepreneurship, incubation program, funding for building a solution or product, and most of all, access to BITS alumni network for further investments.

Prof. V. Ramgopal Rao, Vice-Chancellor, BITS Pilani said, “The world requires our best researchers and academics to put their innovative research to use in solving the biggest challenges facing humanity. As a country, we haven’t done enough in the area of Deep Technology and Deep Science ventures, where a startup takes a long time to become viable. With this new program, we want PhD scholars to become an entrepreneur along with becoming an innovator, and not just look at an academic career post their PhDs”. Goal will be to incubate 100 startups through this program by 2030, said Prof. Rao. BITS Pilani alumni have created over 7400 startups of value all over the world so far including 13 unicorns and a decacorn.

He further added, “Our current focus areas include solutions to address issues related to homeland and cyber security, healthcare, environment, agriculture, space and energy. Many sub-domains in these areas related to climate change, industry 4.0, food-technology etc will be of interest. The idea is to make advanced technologies such as quantum science and nanotechnology work for people at the grassroots. The PhD students under this startup track shall join a centre of excellence or a specialized lab at BITS Pilani working in these areas.”

BITS Pilani and its technology business incubators such as DST supported PIEDS, BIRAC supported BGIIES, and the DST NM-ICPS supported BioCyTIH will work with various partners including investment partners, government labs, industry experts, corporates, and BITS alumni to keep the PhD scholars on a path of forming a startup, and also create opportunities for them to seek further investments. Speciale Invest, a leading venture capital firm with a focus to invest in deep tech startups has already expressed their early support to the program. Vishesh Rajaram, Managing Partner, Speciale Invest, said, “Academia is a breeding ground for deeptech innovations and as a leading deeptech investor in India, we are excited to partner with BITS Pilani in an innovative programme to foster the next generation of deep science and deeptech entrepreneurs.”

Rajaram further adds, “shaping holistic founders who understand technology and business will be a critical link for the current decade of India Deep Tech to be successful. Having invested in multiple deeptech startups at the early stage including those in spacetech, electric mobility, batteries, robotics, semiconductors amongst others, we look forward to playing an active role in helping PhD students ideate, build, iterate and commercialize innovations that have a large-scale impact on India and the world.”

The scholars will be working in various Centre of Excellences that BITS has already set up in the areas of Semiconductors, Bio-Cyber Physical Systems, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Medical Diagnostics and Infectious Diseases, amongst others. The scholars would be supported through a much higher stipend, and would be provided a prototyping grant during the program.

Suresh Kabra, alumnus of 82-87 batch has decided to fund 3 women PhD Scholars with innovative ideas in the Biological Sciences area, along with the seed funds. Kabra said, “BITS Pilani has a strong entrepreneurial culture amongst the undergraduate levels and in the alumni. With Ph.D and post-doc scholars being encouraged to set up a venture, it will augur well for the deep science innovation ecosystem of India”.

The admission for this program will be round the year and notifications for the program shall be posted on BITS website and its social media channels. BITS Pilani is leveraging its strong alumni network and corporate partners for funding and mentorship support.

BITS Pilani is an institution of eminence that offers programs in science, technology, and management from its 5 campuses – Pilani, Dubai, Goa, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. In 2021, it launched BITS School of Management (BITSoM), a new-age global business school, and in 2023, it began offering programs in Law through the BITS Law School (BITSLaw). Innovation and entrepreneurship in india: an overview.

Published online by Cambridge University Press:  18 October 2019

India began the process of market liberalization that opened it to significant interactions with the world economy in 1991. In this essay, we provide an overarching view of the country's journey toward integration with the global innovation and entrepreneurship network. Major nodes in this global network have two major components that may be metaphorically referred to as ‘pillars and ivy’. Globally connected multinational enterprises (MNEs) form the pillars. Agile startups are the ivy, and their success (metaphorically, the height to which they can climb) depends on their symbiotic connections with the pillar MNEs. Both components are essential and reinforce each other. Without MNEs, the scaling of startups is hampered. Without a vibrant population of startups, MNEs’ interest in a location remains driven by cost, rather than capability and creativity. MNEs (mainly foreign) provided the initial sparks for the formation of the Indian innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem. We chart the subsequent growth of India's startups. They began in the information technology (IT) sector but now cover a much wider range of industries. Today, India's innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem is one of the largest in the world, with global integration in terms of technology, financing, human capital, and administration.

In this paper, we use the term jugaad to describe the frugal, flexible, and inclusive approach to innovation and entrepreneurship emerging from India. We articulate why this method is appropriate within the Indian context and highlight similarities between jugaad and related types of innovation originating from other emerging (and developed) economies. Next, we identify different types of organizations that engage in jugaad and elucidate their abilities, or lack thereof, to undertake such innovation. Finally, we incorporate the notion of jugaad within current theorizing on innovation and entrepreneurship and outline an agenda for future research on this topic. Overall, we provide insights on a mode of innovating that is increasingly prevalent in India as well as certain economies around the world and take steps towards integrating this concept into the mainstream theory, practice, and policy discourses around innovation and entrepreneurship.

Anupama

I really value the opportunity for engaged scholarship provided by IIM Bangalore, where our research questions matter not only for business but also government and society. To be able to place myself at that intersection as a scholar, to engage with questions facing organizations and society, and to build capabilities to impart that knowledge to future managers in classrooms is exciting to me. I truly believe that the PhD programme at IIM Bangalore will shape us into scholars who will contribute to organizations and society through research.

The Center for Entrepreneurial Studies, founded in 1996, works to prepare effective, insightful entrepreneurial leaders and to enhance knowledge about entrepreneurship and innovation. Stanford GSB has a broad and varied expertise in entrepreneurship — a wide range of courses in entrepreneurship and innovation, engaging co-curricular learning options, and faculty research on innovation, startups, venture funding, and entrepreneurial ecosystems.

Entrepreneurial Education

Stanford GSB offers more than 50 different courses in entrepreneurship and innovation, taught by academic faculty, frequently in partnership with accomplished entrepreneurs and seasoned investors. Students also have access to dozens of entrepreneurial courses at other Stanford schools, enabling them to create a personalized curriculum to meet their learning goals.

  • Startup Garage

Where student teams design and test new business concepts that address real-world needs Students at Stanford GSB have the unique opportunity to custom-tailor their curriculum, with over 60 courses in entrepreneurship and innovation to choose from.

  • Formation of New Ventures

Stanford GSB offers students who want to undertake an entrepreneurial career by pursuing opportunities leading to ownership of a business. The course deals with case situations from the point of view of the entrepreneur rather than the passive investor. Many cases involve visitors, since the premise is that opportunity and action have large idiosyncratic components.

  • Managing Growing Enterprises

Explore challenges faced by entrepreneurs as they rapidly scale a company. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on the application of analytical tools to administrative practice.

Beyond the Classroom

Stanford GSB offers students many opportunities to extend their entrepreneurial learning outside the classroom. Co-curricular programs such as Stanford Venture Studio, entrepreneurial workshops, and the Entrepreneurial Summer Program create unique educational experiences to augment classroom learning.

MIT Sloan Experience

Now Reading 4 of 4

The PhD Program is integral to the research of MIT Sloan's world-class faculty. With a reputation as risk-takers who are unafraid to embrace the unconventional, they are engaged in exciting disciplinary and interdisciplinary research that often includes PhD students as key team members.

Research centers across MIT Sloan and MIT provide a rich setting for collaboration and exploration. In addition to exposure to the faculty, PhD students also learn from one another in a creative, supportive research community.

Throughout MIT Sloan's history, our professors have devised theories and fields of study that have had a profound impact on management theory and practice.

From Douglas McGregor's Theory X/Theory Y distinction to Nobel-recognized breakthroughs in finance by Franco Modigliani and in option pricing by Robert Merton and Myron Scholes, MIT Sloan's faculty have been unmatched innovators.

This legacy of innovative thinking and dedication to research impacts every faculty member and filters down to the students who work beside them.

Student Research

“MIT Sloan PhD training is a transformative experience. The heart of the process is the student’s transition from being a consumer of knowledge to being a producer of knowledge. This involves learning to ask precise, tractable questions and addressing them with creativity and rigor. Hard work is required, but the reward is the incomparable exhilaration one feels from having solved a puzzle that had bedeviled the sharpest minds in the world!” -Ezra Zuckerman Sivan Alvin J. Siteman (1948) Professor of Entrepreneurship

Sample Dissertation Abstracts - These sample Dissertation Abstracts provide examples of the work that our students have chosen to study while in the MIT Sloan PhD Program.

We believe that our doctoral program is the heart of MIT Sloan's research community and that it develops some of the best management researchers in the world. At our annual Doctoral Research Forum, we celebrate the great research that our doctoral students do, and the research community that supports that development process.

The videos of their presentations below showcase the work of our students and will give you insight into the topics they choose to research in the program.
