Jamshedpur: A ‘Private’ Success Story

"Be sure to lay wide streets planted with shady trees, every other of a quick-growing variety. Be sure that there is plenty of space for lawns and gardens; reserve large areas for football, hockey and parks; earmark areas for Hindu temples, Muslim mosques and Christian churches."

Incredibly, these were the instructions given by Jamsetji Tata to his son Dorab way back in 1902, when he was building the Tata Steel Company and developing an industrial township around it. The town came to be known as Jamshedpur, India’s first planned city.

Jamshedpur was developed on the site of a village called Sakchi in present-day Jharkhand, when iron ore deposits were found nearby. It was just what the Tatas, one of India’s biggest industrial houses, had been looking for when they set out to build India’s first steel factory, now called Tata Steel.

– The city has consistently ranked high on indices that reflect quality of life, making this ‘company town’ – one that is virtually owned by one single company – India’s most successful, privately-run city.

The Tatas’ steel plant, also India’s very first, was developed in a semi-wasteland at the confluence of the Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers known as Domuhani. Construction began in 1907-08, and it was designed by engineers Julian Kennedy and Axel Sahlin based in Pittsburgh (America’s Steel City). Their plan envisioned a ‘company town’ for about 10,000 residents with bungalows and quarters for housing managers and skilled workers, a recreation ground and a bazaar .

However, architectural thinkers Amita Sinha and Jatinder Singh, who have studied the development of Jamshedpur, point out that this plan ignored the acute need to house labourers, with the result that clusters of mud huts sprang up around the towns and close to the factory gates.

Steel for The War

Within 10 years, the township grew to 50,000 residents, largely courtesy of the First World War. In 1919, the Governor-General and Viceroy of India, Lord Chelmsford, said in a speech delivered at Sakchi, “I can hardly imagine what we should have done during these four years if the Tata Company had not been able to gift us steel rails which have been provided for us, not only for Mesopotamia but for Egypt, Palestine and East Africa, and I have come to express my thanks.” The company had supplied 300,000 tonnes of steel to the Allied effort. In recognition of this, Lord Chelmsford renamed Sakchi ‘Jamshedpur’, after its founder Jamsetji.

– The steel produced was also vital for building infrastructure and industry in India, from railways and bridges to factories and housing. To accommodate the growth, the company acquired 12,000 acres in addition to its earlier 3,000 acres of land.

But the Tatas didn’t let the expanding township get out of hand. After the War, Frederick Charles Temple, sanitary engineer for Orissa and Bihar, was appointed Chief Engineer of Jamshedpur, to accommodate the growing population and plan for this growth. He brought in concepts of the then newly-designed British city of Letchworth, with an approach to environmental and community planning. Temple was influenced by how the earlier tribal settlements had made use of the topography in the construction of their huts.

According to Sinha and Singh, “To protect the riverfront from industrial pollution and town waste and to preserve its scenic quality, Temple designed a low-level outer circle road with an intercepting sewer, connected to the inner circle road by ‘links’.” The drainage and sewage systems that were installed in this Indian town were ahead of their times.

A Compliment From Gandhi

In 1925, Mahatma Gandhi visited India’s Steel City in response to a special invitation from his close friend C F Andrews, who was at that time a labour leader in Jamshedpur. Andrews had sought Gandhi’s guidance to resolve some labour issues. Gandhi was surprised to find progressive labour-oriented policies in the company like eight-hour workdays, medical leave, bonus and provident fund, and skill development programmes. He remarked in his journal, “This town owes a debt of gratitude to the courage of Jamsetji Tata.”

– It was indeed a tribute to the Tatas, who realised early that the workers’ physical and social infrastructure contributed to morale and thus productivity.

In the 1930s, Major PGW Stokes, who had restored Quetta in present-day Pakistan after the 1934 earthquake, came to refurbish Jamshedpur, where he focused on expanding housing. He was followed by Otto Koenigsberger, the German chief architect of Mysore, who converted Jamshedpur into a garden city.

The advent of the Second World War further increased the demand for steel, leading to a surge in employment. The population of Jamshedpur was now about 1.5 lakh. Due to its importance to the Allies, Jamshedpur ran the risk of being the chief target of an Axis air raid in Eastern India when Japan entered the China-Burma-India theatre of war.

Several bomb shelters were thus built across Jamshedpur along with tar boilers, to produce smokescreens during Japanese air raids. Tata factory hooters doubled as air-raid sirens.

Cosmopolitan Character

In the next few years, more industries sprang up in the region, like Tata Motors (formerly known as Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company, 'TELCO') in 1945, with its own residential colonies. The best part about these colonies was not only the excellent civic amenities and the quality of life they offered, with schools, hospitals, clubs and parks within them, but their cosmopolitan nature.

A socio-economic survey in 1959 revealed that more than half the migrants who flocked to Jamshedpur for jobs with the Tatas were from outside the state. These were largely skilled and educated people from across the country. For these individuals and their small families, Jameshedpur and their neighbours became their whole world.

Also, Jamshedpur is the only city in India with a population of more than a million that does not have a municipality. There have been moves to set one up but it has been vetoed more than once in favour of the Tatas overseeing its administration.

Due to how well it was planned and successfully it was run, Jamshedpur was one among six cities chosen in 2005 to participate in the UN Global Compact Cities Pilot Programme, which addressed acute social, economic and environmental issues in the urban context around the world. The idea was to come up with innovative solutions by working in partnership with government, business, academic organizations and civil societies. The other five cities were Melbourne (Australia), Porto Alegre (Brazil), Tianjin (PRC), Nairobi (Kenya) and Sans Francisco (US).

It’s been quite an incredible journey from a semi-arid wasteland to holding its own as a model city in a country where quality of life comes at a premium. Clearly, politicians, bureaucrats and other decision-makers elsewhere in India have plenty to learn from India’s Steel City and its farsighted founder who was way ahead of his time.

Kolkata has always been the city of joy and happiness. Kolkata has a rich cultural background, and the heritage associated with my city makes it valuable and beautiful. Kolkata, previously known as Calcutta, was the capital of India during the British rule. It is a city that has a rich cultural history and is the intellectual hub of India. The British made Calcutta the capital city because it was the center of education, business, and economics. Kolkata has produced brave hearts, which have fought our National Struggle ever so courageously and have helped get freedom from the British.

My city is unique, and it amazes me to think of how wholesome Kolkata truly is. It has everything one can wish for, and its people have a secure attachment to their city. Kolkata is famous for its lip-smacking food and ancient monuments, and it is also known as the City of Joy. Kolkata is the city of emotions and festivities.

Kolkata has her essence. Not everybody will recognize her true beauty. It is not as technologically advanced as Bangalore or as posh as Mumbai, but Kolkata is a city with a soul. She will touch you in ways unknown to humankind and will give you the solace you have always craved. Kolkata is excellent as a city. You can never get tired of Kolkata. Living here is like pursuing a long lost dream of culture and inheritance. Kolkata shapes you in the classiest ways possible.

Heritage colleges like the Presidency University, Rajabazar Science College, Jadavpur University, etc. ensure that students get an excellent education. Kolkata has tremendous patriotic fervor, and it was where the first students’ movement began. The colleges teach moral values besides academic curriculums. Students know what god for their country is.

Kolkata was also the central hub of the Naxalite movement. The city shapes people in a way that they refuse to accept injustice. Kolkata has a strong political base, and the people here would do anything to stand up for what is right. Apart from the educational role, Kolkata also has advanced business centers. Every year, a business meeting is organized in Kolkata, and the economy is strengthened.

My city has countless spectacles. Sitting by the river Ganges on a chilly winter night, staring at the city lights on the other side as cars and buses rush past us is surreal. Be it the iconic Rabindra Setu or the Dakshineshwar Temple, Kolkata has many structures that have endured the ravages of time.

I love everything about this place – from the house we have rented for accommodation to my school, from my neighbourhood to the local markets, from the beautiful monuments to the delectable food. Everything here is just amazing. But what I like the most about this city is the people here.

I also love the fact that there is so much to explore in this city. I have been living in Noida for the last 12 years. I still remember our old house where I spent 3 years of my life. Though, I was very young at that time, I still have fond memories of my friends who lived in our neighbourhood.

We lived in a joint family. I lived with my parents and grandparents. I remember going for morning walk with my grandfather who used to narrate his childhood experiences on the way. I remember the freshness of the bougainvillea plant that grew in our backyard.

I remember my evening visits to the beautiful white marble temple with my grandmother. I remember the fragrance of the freshly prepared kabab paranthas at the street stall in our neighbourhood. I also remember my weekend trips to the market with my parents. We shopped and ate and had a lot of fun during that time.

My Favourite Spots in Lucknow

Lucknow is known for its markets, its scrumptious food, beautiful monuments and. My favourite spots in Lucknow are the Imam Bara, Marine Drive, Hazrat Ganj market and Bhootnath market. I have a lot of fond memories of these places.

I have visited Imam Bara quite a few times. The first time I visited this place with my parents when I was very young. A few years later I visited the place as a part of my school excursion. We also went to the place when my maternal aunt and cousins visited us. I can visit Imam Bara over and over again and still not get bored.

We often visited marine drive in the evening. A stroll by the river side was extremely rejuvenating. I also loved shopping trips to Bhootnath and Hazrat Ganj markets with my mother. We both love shopping and the variety of things we got there was just amazing.

I just can’t wait to be in the city of Nawabs yet again. I am craving to have the delicious kabab roles and korma of Lucknow. I also want to visit all my favourite places in the city and meet my old friends.

The history of Delhi dates back to the 12 th century. It is known as the oldest inhabited cities not just in India but around the world. Delhi has been ruled by several powerful kings including Ibrahim Lodi, Zaheeruddin Muhammad Babur, Sher Shah Suri, Prithvi Raj Chauhan, Qutub-ud-Din Aybak, Jalal-ud-din Firuz Khilji, Shah Alam Bahadur Shah I and Akbar Shah II to name a few. The city was destructed and re-built several times by different emperors.

It is believed that the Pandvas also lived in this part of the country. During that era, the city was known by the name, Indraprastha. The Old Fort (Purana Qila) is said to have been constructed during that time.

Delhi’s Beautiful Monuments

Delhi is known for its beautiful monuments. There are a number spectacular monuments standing tall since centuries. Many new edifices have been built later and are as magnificent. Tourists from around the world visit Delhi to see these monuments. Here is a look at some of the most popular monuments in my city:

Red fort is one of the oldest monuments in Delhi. Made of red sandstone, the fort encompasses various museums. This brilliant piece of architecture was built by the Mughals in the 16 th century. The Mughal emperors lived here for almost 200 years.

Humayun’s Tomb

It is said that Humayun’s Tomb is a replica of the marvellous Taj Mahal. It is made with red sandstone and white marble. The tomb is an example of the Persian style of Islamic architecture. The tomb is 47 metres high and 91 metres wide and is surrounded by beautiful Persian-style garden.

Lotus Temple

As the name suggests, this temple is built in the shape of a lotus. It has 27 petals made of white marble. It has nine doors that open into the main hall. The marvellous edifice is big enough to accommodate up to 2500 people at a time.

Lotus Temple is a Bahai House of Worship however it is open for people belonging to any religion.

Qutub Minar

Yet another architectural brilliance, Qutub Minar is also made of red sand stone. It was built by Qutub Ud-Din-Aibak. This 73 metre tall edifice is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It consists of five storeys that are connected through spiral staircase.

India Gate is yet another historical monument in the city that draws numerous tourists from around the world. The names of martyrs are engraved on this monument. The Amar Jawan Jyoti lit under this monument is a tribute to the Indian soldiers.

Akshar Dham Temple

Akshar Dham Temple is a place of devotion and purity. It is the latest addition in the list of monuments in Delhi. It was opened for public in the year 2005. Besides the beautifully carved temple and other marvellous buildings, the Akshar Dham complex includes lush green gardens and water bodies.

I have been to all these places and can visit these over and over again. I have beautiful memories of these places.

Apart from the historical monuments, Delhi also includes numerous places to shop around. It can certainly be called a shopper’s delight. I love visiting different markets that do not only give me an opportunity to buy good stuff but also gives me a chance to have delectable street food. I can’t imagine myself living anywhere other than Delhi.

Introduction

The name of my city is Agra. It stands on the bank of Yamuna River. It is not far from Delhi, Aligarh, Mathura and Bharatpur.

The climate of the city is not good. It becomes very hot in the summer. In the rainy season, mosquitos are a major problem. The winter is chilly. So the climate is an average here in Agra, not quite conducive for health.

The city is big. The population here is increasing day by day. Its population is around 15.9 lakhs according to the 2011 survey. People of every caste, creed and religion live here. But the Hindus are in majority.

It is a business centre, Sadar Bazaar is the popular shopping spots, and other market places are Kinari Bazar, Subhash Bazaar, Raja Ki Mandi, Shahganj Bazaar, TDI Mall and many more.

The great Moghul Akbar’s famous fort is a fine building. Besides these, Mankameshwar temple is a place worth seeing.

There are many first-rate shoe factories. There are also some carpet factories. In Dayal Bagh colony, there are some factories.

School and Hospitals

It is an Education hub. It has a university and degree colleges. There many inter colleges and schools, and medical college. It is attached with Sarojini Naidu hospital. In Dayal Bagh, there is an engineering college, and some reputed hospitals also.

I love my city Agra very much. People come here from every part of the world to see the Taj, Agra is also known as a city of Taj.

The name of my school is St. Xavier School and it is located in the area of Electronic City, in Bengaluru. Our school was established by Mr. Collins and Mrs. Flavia Albuquerque in the year 2010. Our school is affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education and has classes from Lower Kindergarten to 12th.

Our school campus houses classroom buildings and playgrounds. Our school building is white. All the students of our school have to go to the auditorium for our morning prayer assembly before our classes start for the day. All the students stand in straight lines and sing the prayer song in chorus. Some of the students are half asleep on most of the days, during the morning assembly. Their eyes seem to be closed for the latter part of the morning prayer and they sing the prayer in a sleepy voice. After the morning assembly, all the students go to their respective classrooms and wait for their teachers to come.

There are many classrooms on every floor of our school building and there is a long corridor just outside the classrooms. Some boys play in the corridor when no teacher is there in their classrooms. There is a big room in our school building, where our Principal sits and also there is a room where all our teachers sit. Some teachers are very friendly and loving while some teachers are strict. Most of the teachers ask for the previous day’s homework before starting the class. Few teachers give us homework only for the weekends.

I study in section-A of class 2 and there are 36 students in our section. Our class teacher changes the sitting arrangement every week so that everyone can get a chance to sit in the front row. The desks and benches smell of fresh paints every year when the school reopens for the new session. Whenever there is no teacher in our class, we play tic-tac-toe on the desks with pencils.

Our school has computer laboratories where we are taken by our computer teacher twice a week. We have to make groups of two or three before we get to type on a computer keyboard. Every week, there is a period for games, during which we can play games like cricket, football, etc. Some vendors sell potato chips, jellies, and toffees just outside our school premises. My friends and I love to have the jellies they sell.

There are huge playgrounds on our school premises and we all play over there during lunchtime. I have many friends at school and some of them are from other sections. We all play together during the lunch break. I love going to school every day, as I can learn a lot of new things in the class and I can play with my friends. Is this page helpful?
