If you’re not sure what exactly a descriptive essay is and how to write one, you’ve come to the right place. I’m Tutor Phil, and in this tutorial I’ll explain how a descriptive essay works and how to write it, step by step.

We’ll write one together, so you’ll have a great example of a descriptive essay.

What Is a Descriptive Essay?

A descriptive essay is a piece of writing in which the author describes a place, a person, an object, an animal, or a process. The purpose of a descriptive essay is to move the reader to some kind of a revelation, conclusion, or decision about the subject.

It is very important to note that a descriptive essay is not an argumentative essay. You’re not presenting an argument and doing whatever it takes to support it.

In a descriptive essay, your intention should be to describe the subject in such a way that the reader would create her own impression of it.

At the same time, your essay is not neutral because it is colored by your own perception or experience of the subject.

In other words, you are implying and suggesting, not blatantly pushing an opinion.

You want to let the reader see, hear, touch, smell, and taste the place you’re describing. And that experience should lead the reader to an appropriate impression or conclusion.

Writing a Descriptive Essay Is a 6-Step Process

Step 1. choose the subject.

Maybe your instructor has already chosen the subject for you. If not, choose a country, city, or a place within a city or a geographical location that you are familiar with.

Ideally, it is a place that you have been to and have a good memory of it. A descriptive essay about a place should not rely solely on research, in most cases.

The real value of your essay is that you know that place, and perhaps it has a special meaning for you or evokes feelings that no other place can evoke.

So, unless you have to write about a specific place where you have never been, choose a location that has a special place in your heart.

Sometimes, your subject can be a place with which you may have negative associations. But most likely, it is a beloved place that has left an indelible impression on your heart and mind.

Criteria for choosing the place

Ideally, this place should be dear to your heart
It is unique. It is unlike any other place you’ve ever been to, in at least one or two important ways
It has left a strong impression on you
Perhaps you learned something there
Perhaps something wonderful happened to you there, such as meeting your soulmate or discovering something about yourself
Ideally, it has special visual qualities that stand out in contrast to what your audience is probably used to. In other words, being visually striking is a huge plus.

I’ll give you an example. For me, one particular little spa town in Europe won me over when I first visited it many years ago. Its name is Carlsbad, or Karlovy Vary. The terms are interchangeable. One is of German origin, and the other is native Czech.

It is located in the western part of Czech Republic, not too far from the German border. It is serene, spectacular, and magical, and I’ll choose it as the subject for our sample descriptive essay.

By the way, Carlsbad, California was named after Karlovy Vary because of the similar mineral content of the underground waters found in the American cousin city.

Step 2. Pick an audience

I understand that you’re probably writing this essay to fulfill a requirement for your class. In which case, your audience is your teacher or professor.

But even if you’re writing for your instructor, you should still have a particular audience in mind because this will help you form ideas and keep your thoughts flowing.

Knowing your audience will inform your choices of what to include and what to exclude in your descriptive essay because your reader may care about some aspects of this place but not others.

Criteria for choosing an audience

Your ideal reader is someone who is most likely to be interested in this place
It is someone who is likely to enjoy reading your essay
Your ideal audience is also someone who will benefit from reading about this place and derive the most value from it

Let’s come back to our example of Karlovy Vary. As I already mentioned, it is a spa town, which means that its attractiveness lies in its therapeutic qualities.

I first visited this gem of a town back in 2004 as a result of a real academic and professional burnout. I believe I was still an undergraduate student finishing up my studies, and I also had a stressful job.

I lived in Brooklyn, which is a borough of New York City, and this metropolis is known for its stressful lifestyle.

New York has all the disadvantages of living in a large city, such as pollution and other stressors that can really suck the life energy out of its dwellers if they are not careful.

I lived in New York for 25 years, and I love this city. I don’t want to come across as totally negative about it.

But focusing on the negatives about my city in this case will help you see how I am choosing the audience for this essay we’ll be writing together in this tutorial.

You see, New York City is a direct opposite of Karlovy Vary in several critical ways.

Establishing a contrast helps define an audience

New York is noisy. Drivers here are notorious for incessant horn honking. And you can hear an ambulance or a police siren probably every 15 minutes or so.

Conversely, Karlovy Vary is super quiet. Such a crazy hustle and bustle doesn’t exist here, and drivers don’t have a reason to honk the horn all the time. It is also very rare to hear a police or an ambulance siren.

Air quality in New York is decent for a big city, but it is still relatively polluted . All the millions of cars and trucks produce way too much carbon dioxide. You can actually see the smog from some vantage points.

The air in Karlovy Vary is virtually pristine. The town is surrounded by hills, and car traffic is not allowed in the city center.

The landscape in New York is a bit monotonous and often fails to inspire. They don’t call this city “a concrete jungle” for nothing. The overall atmosphere is hardly conducive to a great mood or daily inspiration.

Conversely, Karlovy Vary offers aesthetically pleasing, relaxing, and inspiring architecture and landscape. It’s like entering a spa, only the spa is a whole town.

Now that we have this contrast, it is easy to see who might be interested in learning more about Karlovy Vary. Our ideal audience is someone who:

Lives in a big metropolis, such as NYC or another big city
Can relate to being excessively stressed out
Is aware of noise and air pollution
Would love an escape to relax and renew, even if only by reading an essay.

So, our essay becomes a sort of a virtual or a fantasy escape until an actual trip becomes possible.

Your audience might have different challenges, needs, and desires. It could be someone who:

Is nostalgic about their childhood and a place associated with it
Dreams about a perfect place to live and work
Plans a retirement location

Think of these factors when determining your audience. In the meantime, because we’ve already identified our ideal reader – a stressed out urban dweller – we can move on to the next step.

Step 3. Divide the subject into subtopics

No matter what kind of an essay you’re writing, you want to divide the main topic into subtopics. In other words, you want to create some kind of a structure that will consist of parts.

I use and teach my students to use the technique I call the Power of Three.

What this means is that instead of having just one big topic, such as one town, we can have three aspects of this town to discuss.

Incidentally, we already talked about three major differences between NYC and Karlovy Vary. These are noise levels, air quality, and landscape. So, perhaps we can use one or more of these aspects of a city as sections of our essay.

We must keep in mind that we’re not writing a comparative essay , although that’s a possibility, too.

We’re writing a descriptive essay. So, we need to find three aspects of the town that we can discuss one after another to put together a rich and detailed enough picture of this place.

Note that these three aspects correspond to the senses of hearing, smell, and sight.

Let’s make a preliminary list of such aspects of Karlovy Vary:

Quietness. Does this aspect present an interesting description opportunity? This will depend on our ability to turn it into an asset.
Air quality. This may be too specific. We may want to zoom out a little and discuss more than one natural asset of this city. Some of the others include water quality and the industries associated with it.
Landscape. This is the most conspicuous aspect of this city. The first thing you’re struck with is how beautiful this place really is. This one is definitely a winner.

If we go about writing about these three aspects of Karlovy Vary creatively, we will have three nice sections or paragraphs that will form the body of our essay.

Note that we’ll probably use more than one sensory perception, such as sight or smell, in each section. We’ll simply use one of three senses as a primary focus in each of our three sections.

It would make sense to begin the discussion of the city by describing it visually. So, this will be our primary focus in the first section.

Then, we can proceed to the sense of hearing. Why? Because our last section will be about air and water. And we should probably leave those for last because we can hear the water before we can taste it. That’s just the way it works in Karlovy Vary.

So, the primary sense perception in our second section will be hearing. And this section won’t be just about how quiet it is.

In fact, the real contrast between a big city and Karlovy Vary is the quality of the soundscape, not just the simple quietness, although it’s a part of it. So, we’ll focus on all the little sounds that make this place unique.

Finally, in the third section or paragraph, we’ll talk about the air and the water, which will correspond to the senses of smell and taste, primarily.

Again, we’ll be using any sense perceptions we feel necessary to make the reader’s experience as real as possible.

And now we have our place, we know our audience, and we have our three main ideas about this place that we’ll use to structure the essay.

We can begin writing, and we’ll start with the opening paragraph.

Step 4. Write the introduction

An introductory paragraph in a descriptive essay offers you a lot of flexibility in how you choose to write it.

You can start off with a particular example of a sense perception, drop your reader in the middle of a town square, or begin with an abstract concept.

I would like to suggest an easy and practical way to do it. In the first sentence or two, pull your reader from the outside world into this particular magical place you’ve chosen to write about.

Then, focus on the place you want to describe and say something general about it that would set the context or provide a perspective.

And finally, set some kind of an expectation for what’s to follow. You can create a sense of mystery, if you like. Remember, this is not an argumentative essay. So, you have more room for creativity.

This is where we begin to put together our descriptive essay example. Let’s write our introductory paragraph.

Descriptive Essay Introduction

“When the city has worn you down, the body is tired, and the soul yearns for a respite, you can count on a little magic gem of a town that will nourish you back to life. The name of the place is Karlovy Vary, and it is nested in the heart of Europe, in Western Bohemia, a region in Czech Republic famous for its spa towns. Its beautiful architecture, therapeutic landscape, clean air, and mineral waters offer the weary a healing adventure and a feast for the senses.”

What have we done in this paragraph?

We’ve pulled the reader into the world of this small spa town. We first descended in their world of the stressful city, and then we turned their attention to its opposite. We named the town and explained where it is located.

And finally, we provided a glimpse of what to expect in this descriptive essay about this town. Now, we’re ready to write the body of the essay.

Step 5. Write the body of the essay

We know our three main sections, which in this case correspond to three sense perceptions. Each section can have more than one paragraph. It all depends on how long your essay has to be.

If you are writing an essay of about 500-600 words, then a five-paragraph structure will do the job. If you need to write 2000 words or more, then you’ll have three sections instead of just three paragraphs.

And then each section can also be divided into two or three subsections (using the Power of Three, if you like). And each subsection can be a paragraph or more.

Just remember – the more words you need, the more dividing into subtopics you must do. The key to writing more is dividing one idea into several supporting ideas. And then you simply treat each supporting idea as a tiny essay.

Now, let’s write out our body paragraphs. Since there’s quite a bit to cover, we’ll probably take two paragraphs per section to get the job done.

Descriptive essay body paragraphs

“When you stay in one of the pretty little hotels in Karlovy Vary, you are likely to be descending the hills towards the hot springs every morning. No matter which part of town you live in, you’ll be greeted with a magnificent sight of little hotels and spas whose architecture has a unifying 19th century style. At the same time, each building has its own character, color, and features. The town is situated on several hills, and the hotels are lined up along about four levels.

The first level is down by the river Tepla, and these hotels are only a few because most of the downtown is occupied with hot springs colonnades where people gather and drink hot mineral water. The next three levels ascend from the springs, and you can either take the stairs or even use a funicular that will take you to the highest level to the Hotel Imperial. As you exit your hotel in the morning, you are greeted with a sight of a collection of small, three to four story buildings that look like birthday cakes. They are pink, green, blue, red, turquoise, and any color you can imagine. You suddenly realize how this variety of colors and shapes strewn over the hillsides all facing you and the city center makes your head spin and makes you feel like you’ve never felt before. Your healing has begun with landscape therapy.

As you descend the stairs to reach the hot springs, you notice the abundance of oxygen in the air because it has a subtle but distinct smell, a bit like the way air smells right before a rain. Then, as you pass by another hotel, and you’ll pass more than one, a light whiff of toast and fried eggs with bacon hits you, stirring your appetite. It is customary to drink a cup of hot mineral water before you come back to your hotel for breakfast. It is called a drinking cure.

As you keep walking towards the geyser and the springs that surround it, you notice another astonishing detail. Nobody is in a rush. Nobody has anywhere to be except right here, right now. Travelers with cute little porcelain cups stroll along without a worry in the world, taking in the sights, the smells, and the sounds of the birds chirping and singing all around. Their serenity infects you. You slow down, too. You begin to look, smell, and listen. This town has got you.

Karlovy Vary is famous for its healing mineral waters that are known to alleviate gastrointestinal issues. These waters really do have magic powers. You have your little sipping cup with you, and when you reach one of the springs, you wait for your turn to fill it up, walk off, and begin sipping. The water has a very subtle smell, but its taste is pretty strong for water. It has very high mineral content and tastes salty. Most people like the taste. Some find it too strong. But one thing is for sure – by the time you’re about half way through with your cup’s content, your digestive juices have begun to stir.

The hot springs flow out through several fountains, each with its own intricately detailed colonnade. The mineral content of water bursting out of each fountain is identical. But the temperature of the water varies from really hot to mild and comfortable. Your “spa doctor” actually prescribes which fountains to use and how much to drink. Sipping the water out of a special porcelain cup with a built-in straw-like system is a special pleasure of its own. The point is not to rush but to take about 20 minutes to empty the cup. In the meantime, you have a chance to take in the magnificent serenity that surrounds and infuses you. When you’ve drunk your water, it is time to head back to your hotel and eat breakfast. You repeat this routine three times a day for the duration of your stay. By day three, you are serenity itself. By day fourteen, you are a brand new person.”

Step 6. Write the conclusion

A conclusion in a descriptive essay is, like the introduction, more flexible than a conclusion in an argumentative essay.

You can conclude your essay in any way you really want as long as you observe one rule. Just make sure you zoom out and write in more general terms.

It is not the time to add specific details and examples. This is the time to wrap things up and end on a general note.

Your conclusion can be very short – only a couple of sentences. But you can take your space and write as much or as little as you feel like. You can always go back and trim it down or beef it up.

And in a way, it is, especially if you are traveling from a big city and carrying a load of accumulated stress. The next day we decided to have a little adventure and then we reached Solang valley to try one of the most exciting adventurous sports, paragliding. Solang valley is famous for adventure sports and paragliding is the foremost activity opted by tourists.

The birds-eye view and the cold, chilly weather rushed our adrenaline, and yes this was the most memorable experience of my life. Afterwards, we decided to go trekking and camping.

We decided to trek from Solang valley to Beas Kund. We somehow knew that this was going to be the best part of the trip as we were going to do trekking and camping for 2 days. We went along the Beas river experiencing beautiful pine trees and rocky trails. At night we built our camps and cooked our meals. We danced and sang along the bonfire.

After reaching Beas Kund we were in awe to see the beauty. Yes, we were tired but this was a beautiful journey where the destination, as well as the journey, was equally beautiful and amazing.

After this, we reached our hotel and were completely out for one whole day. After an ample amount of rest, we resumed our trip and visited the Buddhist monastery of Gadhar Thekchhokling Gompa and also Himalayan Nyingmapa Gompa. We also visited Lord Narayan temple, Van Vihar, Museum of Himachal culture and folk art, Jayatsukh, and many more.

All we know about Manali and the love of tourist forest and after this visit I can completely agree to the praises of the tourists.

Today I would like to speak about my trip to Meghalaya. Usually, people visit North India but after my exams are over, I convinced my family to go to North-East India.

Once I read about Meghalaya and the best place to visit. I was completely mesmerized by the location and reviews of The tourist and therefore we decided to plan a trip to Meghalaya in February.

Meghalaya is a state of North East India. This state was made from carving two districts out of Assam.

First, we departed to Kolkata from my town, and then from there, we took our train to Guwahati.

After this, we booked a room in the hotel, and then early in the morning, we reached Shillong. The distance between Shillong and Guwahati is around 100 km.

We reached Shillong at 6 a.m. and checked in the rules while at the guest house. I have heard about this hotel in the same article I have read before the trip. The hotel was more like a homestay and also had a beautiful garden attached. After resting for 1 hour we ate our breakfast. We had delicious Puri bhaji and jalebi.

Then we decided to visit the famous elephant falls. It is one of the major tourist attractions in Shillong. This three-tier what to call got its name due to the presence of elephant-shaped Rock.

However in 1897 due to an earthquake, this got integrated and washed away. It is a perfect spot for photography and people around us were busy clicking photos and we’re excited to see the beauty and the calmness of the water.

After this, we went to Shillong peak. This is the highest point of Shillong at the height of around 1965 m above sea level. We were amazed to see the whole city from this breathtaking side. There were also telescopes available for bird watching. We spent over one hour here. Then we travel 23 km South to Shillong to view the sunset at Laitlum Canyon.

This is a beautiful secluded place and is a perfect time to spend your evening relaxing and view the side of nature. Also, it is the perfect destination to watch the sunset.

After this, we went to our hotel and enjoyed it and then went to bed to rest.

In the morning we decided to start our day with a beautiful sunrise view at Umiam lake. This lake is situated at a distance of 15 km north of Shillong. Our local guide has suggested we visit there to watch this nature treat.

I am a nature lover and hence we agreed to go there even though we have to wake up early. The lake was beautiful and mesmerizing. We also did boating and other water sports activities over there. Also had packed a little lunch and therefore we had a little peaceful picnic over there.

Then we visited the Don Bosco Museum. This museum represents the beautiful culture and tradition of Northern India. It is a clear insight into the daily routine of northeastern people. For example, we also visited Lady Hydari park, a Japanese-themed garden. Here we relax and enjoy strolling around for the staff. We also visited a museum and a mini zoo inside there.

During our trip we covered the tourist attractions of Shillong including Cherrapunji, seven sister falls, Ramkrishna mission, and many more.

Today I would like to talk about my recent visit to Jaipur.

Jaipur is the capital city of Rajasthan and last November I got the chance to visit this magnificent City.

Our family loves travelling and every year we go to some places and this year was their time to visit Western India. Rajasthan is a perfect place to visit to explore the rich and traditional culture of Rajput and others full stop. It is known for its historical forts, palaces, and of course the Thar desert.

Jaipur is the perfect choice for tourists to see a glimpse of all as you can find in this city different palaces, forts, and rich culture. And if you are a lover of architecture and culture like my parents it is a dream destination for you.

There on the day of our trip, we went to the railway station and bought it on a train for Lucknow and then to Jaipur. On the first day, we decided to visit the prime destination of the city, Ajmer fort. This beautiful and magnificent palace lies at the top of the Aravali hills for a stop. It is also known that it was built by Maharaja Mansingh, general of Akbar, a Mughal ruler. It was used as the main residence of the Rajput rulers.

We went to eat around 11 a.m. We were amazed by the aesthetic architecture. There were many magnification paintings on the wall of Rajput. My attention especially went to the beautiful red sandstone and marble works.

The fort was so huge that we did not get to know how four hours passed just to look around the fort. Then we visited Jaigarh fort which is around 900 meters far from Amber fort. It is located at the hilltop and you can take a glimpse of the whole city over hair fall stop. Here I got to know why Jaipur is called a pink city.

The next day we visited Hawa Mahal. It looked beautiful in person and in photographs. Then we visited City Palace which is also a museum for Rajput and Mughals belonging. Later we went to Jantar Mantar and Jaipur zoo.

The next day was the shopping day. Explore the bazaars of Jaipur. It was full of colourful small shops. We bought some colourful bangles, a pair of mojris, and imitation jewellery. Also, I got myself a beautiful Kurti of Rajasthani touch.

We also visited different public spaces such as Gem Palace, Ramgarh Lake, Sanganer, Sheesh Mahal, and many more.

I particularly enjoyed the popular cuisines of Rajasthan. This includes Dal Bati, Churma, Mawa kachori, Mirchi Vada and many more.

Today I would like to talk about my recent journey to Kerala. We went there in September 2019.

The next day was a religious day and we went to explore 20 different temples. This includes Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple, Chottanikkara temple, Thali temple, Tirunelveli, and many more.

The fast pace of modern life in the city can be too much for an introvert like myself and I sometimes really need some time to retire into my shell and have a little retreat . Fortunately, I found the perfect little place called “Secret garden” which I am going to share with you now.

“Secret garden” is a garden themed coffee shop located on the rooftop of a building in the centre of Hanoi. The café is well-known for its floral and botanical inspired design, which gives you a sense of peace and tranquillity while being able to enjoy some cake and coffee at the same time.

I have become a frequent guest there and usually go on the weekend. My favourite activities in this coffee shop are reading books while listening to relaxing instrumental music , having a warm cup of tea with cookies or just simply sitting in the exterior garden and enjoying the view.

Despite being popular, the coffee shop’s still able to manage a quiet and soft atmosphere . The setting is perfect with relaxing music, and the staff are really well-trained and cater to the guests’ needs quite well. Also, other guests there are usually quite respectful and generally don’t disturb other people by talking or laughing too loudly.

It’s rare to find a place like this in Hanoi and I always recommend it to my friends who need a break from the busy city life.

Descriptive Essay: My Favorite Place

Coney island in my mind.

I would really love to visit Coney Island again. The place is far from the bustling city and getting there is already part of the adventure. One can take the tunnel or drive but whichever way you take when one arrives in the island, it’s like being transported in time. There is that feeling of de`javu one gets when you see the heart of the island for the first time. Maybe it is because of the old films that featured the amusement parks or because as a young child you have had countless dreams of coming here. The place is filled with old buildings and structures that remind us of how our parents and grandparents might have enjoyed the Thunderbolt and the mermaid shows and the parachute drop and all the other parks when they where younger.

The merry-go-round, which has been the logo of the island, has been embedded in the minds of my generation. One cannot fail to notice the romance in the air and the sweet butterfly kisses of past and present lovers who had spent a memorable day in the ride. The air is filled with childish adventure and laughter, that when one is walking the streets one would surely smile and be filled with joy.

The place is like a giant playground without the technologically advanced rides and shows of today’s theme parks. It offers pure delight and tons of fun. It is a place where everyone is invited to enjoy the sights and sounds of the place and be like children once again discover how easier it is to smile and throw our miseries away.

The whole island is an amusement park with candy stores, taverns, night shows and a magnificent boardwalk. The chatter of children’s voices, the happy shrieks of teens, and the smiles of everyone tells one why this place was and will always be America’s happy park. The smell of popcorn and hotdog as one walks the streets to the parks reminds us of simple days when our wants and desires were simpler. The people are friendly and in keeping with the amusement business are always ready to make your visit to the island worth remembering. When one strolls around the commercial center, one can do so leisurely without the need to see everything, to ride everything and taste everything in one day, one keeps coming back to Coney Island because it is removed from the hurried, impersonal and rudeness of the city.

In winter, the place is like a giant ice kingdom, where everything is glistening white and silent. During this time, one can feel the sadness of the city, how it has been suspended in time, and like a bear who sleeps in the winter, it wakes up in the spring. Sadly, not many people visit Coney Island these days. Recently, the magnificent Thunderbolt has fallen from its glory, quite literally. It has lost much of its famous rides and has been stripped of its former grandeur, but nevertheless will always be an icon in America’s culture. The more important it is that we visit Coney Island again, by doing so we will help keep it alive and be a living heritage to our children.

Vacations and excursions are the most jocund combination and one of the most enticing experiences. We go on many vacations, some with friends, some with families. But, very few of them stick to our memory like this one did for me. When I was 17 years old when I went to Kyrgyzstan for my summer vacation along with my friends.

Kyrgyzstan, the magniloquent place often touted as mini Switzerland, was always on the bucket list of my hodophile friends and mine as well. Therefore, we finally actuated this dream and planned to set forth for this country after our exams were over. We traversed across every famous city of Kyrgyzstan, including Osh, Bishkek, etc., and it honestly was an exquisite experience. The cold weather with a delirious charm and enchanting tradition entranced all of us.

My school friends, along with some of my college friends, were my travel comrades for this beautiful and unforgettable trip that lasted for over 2 weeks. To this date, there has been no such journey or voyage that came close to even half of the amazement this trip caused.

This country, its rituals, traditions and cultural wealth are so diverse and affluent that anyone who has a propensity and an eye for cultures across the globe would find themselves drawn towards this nation and this is what happened to me as well. I was especially mesmerized by their beautiful traditional outfits. Honestly, this trip was extraordinary and worth every bit of it.

Meaning: trips E.g.: Visiting the Taj Mahal with my parents was one of the best excursions I have ever had so far.

Meaning: tempting E.g.: The show was extremely enticing to the eyes.

What are some popular attractions that people like to visit in your country.

In my country, most people prefer to visit the hill stations in the name of travelling and trips since there are a lot of beautiful and scenic destinations such as Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, etc. Each of them is incredibly exquisite and truly beguiling. Apart from that, there are a considerable number of people who prefer going to beaches and coastal plains as well such as Goa, Kerala, Sundarbans, to name a few.

Do old people and young people like to go to different places for vacation?

Well, that is an entirely subjective choice and solely depends on the nature of people and where they choose to travel to. However, younger people, conventionally rambunctious and boisterous who love fun and frolics, prefer going to places with a wide scope of entertainment and adventure. On the other hand, senior citizens generally prefer visiting holy and religious places of worship as they are spiritually inclined.

What do old people and young people think about when making travel plans?

Young people try to ensure riveting and entrancing experiences, including adventure expeditions and amusement, while planning a trip. However, elderly people, on the other hand, consider ensuring safety, protection and tranquility as the essential dynamics.

How do people get to know about new places?

People get to know about new places either through surfing through the travelling and tourism websites or from some television commercials. One might also know of a place to travel to through word of mouth by their known ones.

Meaning: beautiful E.g.: The early morning scenery in the hills is exquisite.

Meaning: fascinating E.g.: The song was so beguiling that we kept on listening to it.

Rambunctious

Meaning: noisy E.g.: Those rambunctious kids were the only disturbing element on the whole trip.

Meaning: to behave in a happy and playful way E.g.: Fun and frolics are the only agenda of the children in our class.

Tranquillity

Meaning: a peaceful, calm state, without noise, violence, worry, etc E.g.: You need to visit the monastery and find some tranquillity, or else you would die of anxiety and fear.

I love exploring new areas, and here I would like to talk about my recent visit to Jaipur. Just last month, I went to Jaipur, which is located in Rajasthan, with my friends. I am very well known for its heritage and culture. My friends and I planned the trip randomly as we all wanted to spend some time together, so we decided to go to any desert area, so Jaipur was the best option. It was four days trip, and we explored a lot ….we visited renowned monuments like Hawa Mahal, Jal Mahal and the beautiful amber fort. We also went to 3 museums, and among them, the science museum was fascinating. I also did some shopping for myself and my family. It was my life’s best trip. The attractions were so thrilling. I really loved the place. And I wish to visit it with my family next time. It was an electrifying experience. If I get to visit Jaipur again, I won’t miss the boat.

In the past, I was not much into visiting new places, but now I like to visit new places on weekends. Last Saturday I visited a new cafe called Coffee culture. We were five people in the group we reached there by car at around 8 pm. One of my friends, Viraj, was throwing a party as he got admission to his dream college. The ambience of the cafe was awesome. We ordered two pasta, two pizzas and 1 Chinese platter. We also ordered two giant coffee mugs. The taste of coffee and food was very impressive. In the cafe, there is also a section for live music. The person who was playing the guitar was super energetic. We enjoyed the evening and then we left the place around 11 pm. It was a nice experience at coffee culture, and in future, I would really like to visit some more places like this which are nearby and affordable and enjoyable at the same time.

Question 1. what measures should be taken to deal with damage to public facilities.

Answer 1:- First of all, strict action should be taken against the citizen who is behind the destruction of public property. He/ she must be fined, and then any action should be taken to recover the damage.

Answer 2:- firstly, we should educate people on how they should maintain public facilities, but if anyone curiously tries to damage public facilities, he or she must get punishment under a section of the law, and punishment must be such so that it can set an example, so anyone in future anyone does not have the courage to damage public facilities intentionally.

Question 2. What are the differences between old facilities and new facilities?

Answer 1:- In the past, there were fewer facilities compared to the contemporary world. If I talk about public parks , earlier community parks only contained swings for kids, but now parks contain gyms equipment, swings for kids, running tracks park and so on.

Answer 2:- Old facilities were good, but new facilities are more technologically equipped like in old buses petrol or diesel used as fuel now electric buses are introduced. In an old-time in many areas, water only used to come for 2hours per day, but now the water comes 24X7.

Question 3. What facilities do young people and old people like in your country?

Answer 1:- Every resident has different taste, and age group also plays an imperative role in fondness for something like youngers love to be surrounded or be at a place that entertains them all the time, whereas elders love places that are noise-free. Nowadays, senior citizens are more found doing the workout in parks, whereas teenagers are in gyms. This means youngers are more attached to technology than the retired age group who love being around nature.

Answer 2:- I think both young and old people like public parks. Young people can go to the park for a walk, for exercise, or they can also take their children to the park for playing. Old people enjoy sitting in the park and chit-chatting with their group. Old people can also run a laughing club in the park.

Question 4. What is the difference between facilities in the countryside and the ones in the cities?

Answer 1:- In the cities side, there are better education and health facilities and the most important availability of jobs whereas villages are also best like provide a clean environment and there is no hassle and bustle like in cities. Accommodations here are quite cheaper than that in urban areas.

Answer 2:- In the city I think public transport facilities are better than in the countryside and also in some countryside areas, street lights are still not present while in the city most of the areas have a street light.

Question 5. Which do you prefer, living in a city or only visiting it as a tourist?

Answer 1:- Ummm. That’s a tricky question…if I had to make one choice, I would go travelling as I cannot stay for a long time in one place. I love changes, and I am really fond of exploring.

Answer 2:- I prefer living in the city because I was born and brought up in the city, so I feel more comfortable in the city only. Facilities in the city, job opportunities, and education are better in the city than in the countryside.

Question 6. How do young and old people react differently to new things?

Answer 1:- Youngers are energetic and impatient, due to which sometimes they react aggressively, while elders, although they have less energy, still hold lots of patience and are also experienced, so they react to things very swiftly.

Answer 2:- Young people usually like new things or new ideas, for old people it is a bit difficult to adapt to new things because they are used to old things so much that they don’t like to change their old thing like they are dependent on the old thing but when young people introduce old people with new things and try to explain advantage old people usually give a try to new things as well.

Question 7. Why do some people want to go to college far away from home?

Answer 1:- The foremost reason why students prefer leaving their comfort place is for more exposure and exploration. And some people also prefer distance campuses for better education and facilities related to recruitment or any personal development skills if not provided in their hometown

Answer 2:- Home is a comfort zone for most people. When you move away from home, you learn to cope with difficult situations, and you can learn about new cultures or meet more people. Moreover, some people have a lot of restrictions back home, so they really like freedom away from home.

Question 8. How do people get to know about new places?

Answer 1:- There are enormous ways through which the public learns about any newly sites, like through any catalogue or ads, from kith and kins who would have just visited that place, from colleagues, from the random person or from social media.

Answer 2:- Nowadays, mostly with the help of the internet, you can google it and get almost every piece of information about the place. Moreover, people follow food bloggers and travel bloggers who review new places so following them is an easy way to have knowledge about new places.

Question 9. What do old people and young people think about when making travel plans?

Answer 1:- It depends as few might think of budget or the weather or say about accommodations, how many days to spend there, about personal requirements, health issues and so on and teenagers would even look for entertainment places.

Answer 2:- I think young people are more adventurous, so they like to visit places which have more things to do whereas old people focus more on comfort and healthy food. Old people like places to sit back and relax.

Question 10. Do old people and young people like to go to different places for vacation?

Answer 1:- Yes, almost all people love travelling to a distinct place. It could be visiting any hills station or any worship place that’s situated in any other state or going to kith and kins. Almost all take advantage of day-offs.

Answer 2:- yes, old people like to visit more religious places and also places which are calm. Young people like to visit places which have any sports or water activities or some trekking or skydiving adventurous.

Question 11. What are some popular attractions that people like to visit in your country?

Answer 1:- India is diverse and rich in heritage and culture; it is renowned for its ancient monuments, religious places, mouth-watering foods places, museums , hills stations, beaches and so on. And most of these sites attract a lot of tourists.

Answer 2:- In my country young people like to visit places such as goa so that they can enjoy beach bars and casinos, but old people mostly like to visit religious places. India is a very cultural country, has a lot of religious places to visit.

Describe a Crowded Place You Have Visited

You should say:

Where is it? When you went there? With whom you went there? And explain how you felt about being there?

NOTE – The examiner gives you one minute to plan your answer , and to help you prepare for the topic, the examiner provides you with a pencil and a notepad. You’ll have to answer the questions given on the topic for one-to-two minutes .

Introduction

Being a city dweller, I have visited numerous crowded places, one of which is unique and worth mentioning.

Where is it?

It is a street market in the middle of the city, beautiful Chandigarh.

When you went there? And With whom you went there?

Last month my friend shifted from Delhi to Chandigarh and wanted to buy some household items like crockery and curtains. Someone suggested we visit the street market in Sector 22, Chandigarh, to buy the products we were looking for.

During that time, I went there, and it was crowded that day with people from all walks of life. Due to immense footfall passing through the aisle was a daunting task

And explain how you felt about being there.

Initially, I was apprehensive about the availability of products in that market; however, to my surprise , we got everything we were looking for.

The best part was that though there were thousands of customers and the market was jampacked, the shopkeepers were in no hurry, and they attended to the customers patiently.

Whatever my friend needed he got there and when we compared the prices we realized that we got a good deal on most of the products.

I further deciphered the real reasons behind so much crowd at that place: the availability of most goods and services in one market.

Finally, when we finished shopping , we ate mouth-watering delicacies from the street vendors in that market. The delicious food they served pampered my appetite.

Whenever I need something for my home, I visit the Sector 22 market rather than going to some showroom or mall.

1. Is there a tranquil place?

There are not many quiet places in the urban area though if one visits the countryside, particularly the hilly areas, one can discover many places with tranquility. As far as cities are concerned, the only site which offers a quiet environment is a library, where those who know very well that creating noise is prohibited.

2. Do you like to go to places with many people?

Although I am a social butterfly, I don’t particularly appreciate visiting places with many people. It is because I feel irritated in the presence of a crowd, so if there are 15-20 people, I am comfortable; however, if the number exceeds, I like to leave that place.

3. Do you like places with large spaces?

Yes, going to places with large spaces appears to me because, at such sites, you have the freedom to walk your business. On the other hand, at a conjured place, you need to remain vigilant while moving here and there. Moreover, in large areas, there is enough air at our disposal to breathe.

4. What are the places which attract many people in your country?

People in my country visit two places most often. Firstly they visit religious sites to get positive vibes and to remain humble. They also visit shopping malls to spend leisure time with pomp and show.

5. What do you think is the most essential thing of a public event?

In the modern era, the most significant thing in a public event is the safety of the people because, in a vast crowd, things can quickly go awry and lead to casualties. Organizers should have sufficient arrangements to handle unforeseen contingencies like short circuits and fires. Another engagement that organizers should pay heed to would-be public conveniences like clean drinking water, urinals, etcetera.

6. What types of problems can be better solved by group work?

Group work is the best way to handle all conflicts adroitly . When diverse minds work in unison on solving an issue, it leads to numerous ideas at our disposal, which aid in deciphering the concern much quicker and creatively.

7. What kind of places do people want to go to when they want to be alone?

When people wish to be alone, they love places with profound solitude. You can find such areas at faraway beaches and gardens where only a few people come. Moreover, people visit specific sites at odd hours, like early mornings and late evenings, to spend time with themselves. Apart from this, some people go on solo trips to places of interest. Lastly, a few individuals love to spend time in the comfort of their homes when they love to be alone.

8. Why is it sometimes necessary for people to be alone?

In today;’s era, fierce competition ja become an integral part of our lives, and stress has grown exponentially. In such a scenario, spending time alone is a charm because it allows you to understand yourself well. Moreover, it empowers you to think beyond the conventional domain to lead your life toward an impressive growth trajectory .

One place I visited that has beautiful views is Ha Long Bay , located in northeastern Vietnam. This UNESCO World Heritage site is famous for its emerald waters and thousands of towering limestone islands topped with rainforests.

I visited Ha Long Bay in the summer of 2019 with my family. We decided to take a trip there because we had heard so much about its stunning natural beauty and wanted to see it for ourselves. We took a two-day cruise to explore the bay and its many attractions.

From the cruise ship, the views were absolutely breathtaking. We could see the endless expanse of emerald green water dotted with hundreds of limestone karsts and islets. The unique shapes and formations of these islands, some of which are covered with lush vegetation, create a mesmerizing seascape. As we sailed through the bay, we also saw floating fishing villages, where local people live and work on the water, adding a cultural dimension to the natural beauty.

One of the highlights was visiting Sung Sot Cave, also known as Surprise Cave. The view from the entrance of the cave, overlooking the bay, was stunning. Inside, the cave itself was filled with impressive stalactites and stalagmites, illuminated by colorful lights, making it a magical experience.

I think these views are so beautiful because they offer a perfect blend of natural wonder and tranquility. The sheer size and scale of the limestone islands are awe-inspiring, and the way they rise dramatically from the water creates a sense of otherworldly beauty. The calm, clear waters of the bay reflect the sky and the islands, enhancing the overall visual appeal. Additionally, the peaceful atmosphere, away from the noise and chaos of city life, allows you to fully immerse yourself in the natural surroundings and appreciate their beauty.

Overall, visiting Ha Long Bay was an unforgettable experience. The stunning views, combined with the serene environment and unique geological formations, make it one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited.

One place I visited that has beautiful views is Mount Fuji , located on Honshu Island, Japan. Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan and an iconic symbol of the country.

I visited Mount Fuji in the spring of 2018 during a trip to Japan with my friends. We chose this time because we wanted to see the cherry blossoms, which add an extra layer of beauty to the already stunning landscape. Mount Fuji had always been on my bucket list due to its cultural significance and natural splendor.

From various vantage points around the base of the mountain, the views of Mount Fuji were absolutely breathtaking. The sight of the perfectly symmetrical snow-capped peak rising majestically above the surrounding landscape is truly awe-inspiring. We also took a trip to the nearby Fuji Five Lakes area, which offered spectacular views of the mountain reflected in the tranquil waters of the lakes. One of the most memorable views was from Lake Kawaguchi, where the reflection of Mount Fuji in the clear lake water created a picture-perfect scene.

We also climbed partway up the mountain to one of the popular viewing spots. From there, we had a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside, with rolling hills, forests, and towns spread out below us. The combination of the natural beauty of the mountain and the serene environment created a sense of peace and wonder.

I think these views are so beautiful because they encapsulate the essence of Japan’s natural beauty. Mount Fuji is not only a magnificent natural landmark but also a symbol of tranquility and spiritual significance. The harmony between the mountain, the lakes, and the surrounding cherry blossoms in springtime creates a visually stunning and deeply moving experience. The changing seasons also add different elements to the landscape, making it a place of perpetual beauty throughout the year.

Overall, visiting Mount Fuji was an unforgettable experience. The stunning views, combined with the cultural and spiritual significance of the mountain, make it one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited.

Uh, about two years ago, after I had naild my high school entrance exam, my family was over the moon and decided to go on vacation to let my hair down. The destination that we chose with Bana hills. It is located in Danang and it is known for its amusement and how futuristic it is. The day before we went to Danang, I was electrified and curious because I had never been there before. At that moment, we went to Danang by plane because this is like a million miles away from where I live. When we got to Danang, we headed to the hotel that we booked before. Uh, and a day later we visited Banah Hill. In Bana hills, there are tons of things that we can visit or maybe enjoy our time there, like an amusement park. It is still fresh in my mind that I spend around 500,000 dong and play some minigames there. And I got two enormous teddy bears there. Moreover, this was the first time that I went in a cable car. The view of the forest and the sky when I sitting in that cable car was appealing. After all of that, we just went to a restaurant and had lunch and went back to the hotel. And to be honest, the cuines were delectable. In the future, if I can go to Bana Hills again, I will definitely invite my friends so we can have more time enjoying our moments there and creating a beautiful memory.
