Supplementary Application

queen's supplementary essay rubric

The Supplementary Application is a Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc) admission requirement for all applicants for to the on-campus program (first-year entry QH; upper-year transfer QHQ).

This year’s Supplementary Application is being delivered through a new platform for an improved applicant experience, with additional functionality to allow applicants to practice and prepare for the submission of their Supplementary Application. Applicants applying to Health Sciences, Nursing and Commerce will be required to complete one written response and one video response. The rubric for the 2023-24 Supplementary Application can be found here.

Note: Do not submit any additional materials (reference letters, CV, etc.) as they will not be reviewed by the admissions committee.

Why do we use a Supplementary Application?

Admission to the BHSc program is very competitive and we know that there is more to an applicant than their academic performance. An applicant will not receive an offer of admission based on grades alone. We use the Supplementary Application in addition to your academic record to learn more about you. Based on your Supplementary Information and your grades, you may be offered admission to Queen’s BHSc.

The minimum admission average and the number of students selected based on the Supplementary Application varies from year-to-year and is dependent on the number of applicants to the program and the academic strength of the applicants each year.

To assist in the effort to identify and eliminate barriers to admission, applicants from a broad range of historically and currently underrepresented groups are encouraged to complete and submit the Equity Admission Self-Identification form when submitting their Supplementary Application. Applicants can choose to complete this form if they identify as:

  • An Indigenous person
  • A member of a racialized/visible minority group
  • A person with a disability
  • A person who identifies as LGBTQ2S+

Only applicants who are academically in the competitive range for admission, will be considered. The information collected will only be used to support offers of admission; this information will have no negative impact on the application. In addition to this equity self-identification form , alternative admission pathways exist for Indigenous and first-generation students.

Please note that supplementary applications are read by a committee of faculty, administration, and staff. Readers are required to undergo various trainings including, but not limited to, sessions covering inclusivity, diversity, intersectionality, and human rights.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions about the supplementary application can be found here.

What are the Queen’s Health Sciences prerequisite courses?

To be a qualified applicant you must have all of the following six grade 12 courses completed by the end of grade 12:

What grade do I need to Apply to Health Sciences at Queens?

The minimum requirement to apply to the health sciences program is at least 75% in grade 12 English, Biology, Chemistry, and Math as well as a cumulative minimum average of 80% in all six courses mentioned previously.

However, acceptance into the Health Science program is highly competitive and applicants should aim to have an average of around 95% to be a competitive applicant. That being said, there have been acceptances given to students who have a cumulative grade 12 average in the high 80s to low 90s and an outstanding supplementary application (more on that later).

What is the Queens Health Sciences Supplementary Application?

In addition to meeting all grade and course requirements, all Health Science applicants are required to complete a supplementary essay when applying.

As you can see the admissions team is really looking to understand who you are as a person!

Each candidate who meets the minimum grade requirement to have their Supplementary Essay reviewed will have their Essays read by at least two members of the individual Program Admission Committee. The exact grade cutoff to have your supplementary essay reviewed is unknown.

TOP 7 TIPS for a Successful Queen’s Health Science Supplementary Application

That being said, we have collaborated with health science students to help even out the playing field for those that may not have access to “insider’s knowledge” like some of the applicants. Queen’s Health Science Additional Admission Considerations

Indigenous candidates:.

Indigenous applicants must self-identify as having Indigenous ancestry (First NMation, Metis, or Inuit) through the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC). This information will later be verified with Queen’s Indigenous Community Liason. Students who meet this requirement will still be required to complete prerequisites and supplementary essays. However, they will be offered an alternative admission pathway in which the number of students admitted each year will be determined in an annual enrolment plan upon consultation with the faculties and schools.

First-Generation Students:

Students may also be eligible for an alternative application pathway if they are a first-generation student; a student who is within the fist-generation of their family to pursue post-secondary education in Canada. This includes students who are:

Breaking Down the Basics: Queen’s Commerce Supplementary Application/PSE

queen's supplementary essay rubric

The Queen’s Commerce supplementary application includes two main parts:

  • The Personal Statement of Experience (PSE), and
  • The Commerce Supplementary Essays (SE).

Both are required components of the application if you’re applying to Queen’s Commerce. Continue reading for a further breakdown of each.

The PSE has two parts. The first is a section where applicants list their top five distinctions, extracurriculars, and jobs. It is a bit like a résumé –a brief overview of your main accomplishments.

The second part has an essay question, which has remained unchanged for years:

Choose one extracurricular activity or one employment opportunity you have listed on your Personal Statement of Experience. In 2,000 characters, or fewer, describe the impact of this experience and the greatest learning outcome for you. Your answer will be evaluated for content and writing style.

The Commerce program is the  only program at Queen’s that requires the PSE . Although it’s optional for other programs, it is mandatory for all Queen’s Commerce applicants. So don’t forget about it!

Commerce Supplementary Essays (SE)

Beginning in 2019-2020, Queen’s began a new system, where the  SE questions change every month  during application season (Nov-Jan). Although the PSE question remained constant, the SE questions changed on the first of every month, for a total of three sets of questions.

Below are the questions from the 2019-2020 application year.

November (due November 30 at 11:59pm)

  • Tell us a story that illustrates who you are.
  • Reflect on something you wish had been different about your high school experience and why.

 December(due Dec 31st at 11:59pm)

  • What makes you unique?
  • Reflect on a time when you were treated unfairly and what that experience taught you?

January (due Jan 31st at 11:59pm)

  • Describe an experience that influenced the person you are today.
  • “You Belong”. Reflect on what this means to you.

These essays are incredibly important  components in your Queen’s Commerce application. The essays allow you to show the admissions committee who you are and demonstrate your writing skills.

Fundamentals of Academic Essay Writing

Overview .

WRIT 125: Fundamentals of Academic Essay Writing is a study of the basic principles of academic writing, including a series of assignments and learning activities that emphasize logical organization, stylistic clarity, and grammatical precision.

The course focuses on the basic elements of the academic essay: thesis statement, topic sentences, paragraph structure, and basic grammar and style. When you understand these elements, take time to practice using them, and receive feedback on your attempts, you will produce better essays.

But producing better essays is not an end in itself. The process of planning, preparing, and writing an academic essay helps you engage with a topic, think critically about it, find your own perspective and opinion on it, and present that perspective to your readers in a clear, logical way.

In WRIT 125 you will be guided through every stage of the essay writing process. As you complete pre-writing exercises, create drafts, and revise your work, you will get valuable practice using the basic elements of the essay. The feedback and coaching you receive from your teaching assistant (TA) and the peer-review process you take part in with other students will all help you sharpen your skills.

In this course, we will not only help you develop and organize your writing, but also offer instruction and exercises in basic grammar and style. Our feedback will focus on specific areas where you (as an individual writer) need to improve and the process of revising, editing, and proofreading your work based on the grammatical and stylistic principles you have learned.

As you complete WRIT 125, you will practice writing types of essays common in undergraduate courses: the critical review essay, the compare and contrast essay, and the research essay.

Learning Outcomes

After completing WRIT 125, students should be able to do the following:

  • Identify the differences between an argumentative and an expository essay
  • Identify the basic parts of the academic essay and use them effectively in your own essay assignments
  • Analyze writing (yours, your peers’, and professional writers’) to identify argumentative strategies and assess how effective they are
  • Recognize common grammar and style errors and how to correct them
  • Apply strategies to revise, edit, and proofread your own work to make it more polished and clear
  • Assess research material and use documentation techniques to integrate source material effectively into your own writing
  • Apply the elements of effective essay-writing to evaluate full essays and their parts
  • Interpret feedback received from peers, TAs, and instructor and apply that feedback to your own writing to make it more persuasive, coherent, and clear

Time Commitment

To complete the readings, assignments and course activities, students can expect to spend on average, about 10-12 hours per week (126 hours per term) on the course.

Fit to Print: The Canadian Student’s Guide to Essay Writing: 8th Edition  by Joanne Buckley (Nelson Publishing).

  • The textbook is available in hard copy from the  Queen's Campus Bookstore.

** Evaluation Subject to Change **

Students will receive considerable feedback on their written assignments; for some students it will be a new experience to have their writing examined so closely. However, the best way to improve one's writing is to understand and put into practice the suggestions of those who are experienced teachers of writing. The marking in this course will reflect students' proficiency in writing and, particularly, the efforts they make to improve. Essay assignments are marked according to a detailed rubric developed in accordance with Queen's marking guidelines.
