Which assignments in Mass Effect 1 are worth doing?

So I got the legendary edition, I’ve been playing for about 20 hours now and realized that a lot of the assignments seem to just be filler missions without actually adding much to the story or having a story of their own. I don’t care so much for the gear upgrades, but I’m looking for assignments which have a good story. Try to avoid spoilers and just say the name of the assignment, thanks for any help!

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition Guide – All Decisions And Choices in Mass Effect 1

The decisions made in the first game can ripple throughout the entire trilogy. here are the various choices you can make along with their consequences..

The Mass Effect franchise is known for important decisions that can reverberate through the trilogy. In Mass Effect: Legendary Edition , this is taken even further since decisions made in each game will influence the number of war assets and Effective Military Strength in the third game’s finale. Of course, some decisions simply lead to interesting bits of dialogue and situations in the sequels so it’s worth keeping an eye out.

Let’s take a look at the different decisions you can make in Mass Effect 1 and their effects.

Recruit or Ignore Garrus – Can be done after the mission “Citadel: Expose Saren.” Though you can miss him at the Med Clinic, he can be found outside the elevator in Central C-Sec. If you choose not to recruit Garrus or ignore him, he’ll be absent throughout the game (though still somewhat aware of Shepard when they meet in Mass Effect 2 ).

Recruit or Ignore Wrex – After completing the “Citadel: Expose Saren” mission, you can meet Urdnot Wrex in C-Sec. He can also be encountered outside of the elevator in central C-Sec. Recruiting Wrex results in him appearing in Mass Effect 2 and 3 (if you don’t kill him on Virmire, that is). Ignoring Wrex effectively removes him from the canon, replaced by Wreav as Clan Urdnot’s leader.

Fist Lives or Dies – In this mission, you can either kill or spare Fist on the Citadel (though bringing Wrex along will result in him killing Fist immediately). Save Fist and he’ll appear in Omega in Mass Effect 2 and dead later in Mass Effect 3 (in other words, he’s not that important in the long run). Killing Fist won’t make him appear later and Wrex will give you the bounty if he wasn’t in your squad when it happened.

Locate Liara – Depending on the number of mission worlds completed before finding her, Liara’s reaction will change. If you find her after one or less worlds, she’ll be under duress but still normal. If you find her after Feros and Noveria, she’ll be more unstable. If found after Virmire, she’ll be unstable, afraid of the Krogan Battlemaster and upset in the Normandy afterwards.

Feros: Colony Survives or Shuts Down – If you complete the different side quests and use either Charm or Intimidate options on Fai Dan, you can save the colony (with its survival determined by a check when the mission concludes). Doing so will unlock the Assignment “Illium: Medical Scans” in Mass Effect 2 . If you also spared Shiala, then Feros will be an asset in Mass Effect 3 . If you don’t pass the check, the colony will be shut down, locking off their appearances in Mass Effect 2 and 3 .

Noveria: Parasini Lives or Dies – Depending on the choices made during Gianna Parasini’s investigation, you can have her survive or die. If you tell Administrator Anoleis that Parasini is an agent, then they’ll both die. If you use any other method to complete the mission, then Parasini will survive and you can do the Assignment “Ilium: Gianna Parasini” in Mass Effect 2 .

Noveria: Spare or Kill the Rachni Queen – When the mission chain comes to an end, you’ll have to either spare or kill the Rachni Queen. Choose the former and she’ll be referenced in Mass Effect 2 while appearing in Mass Effect 3 (where she can become a war asset when spared again). Kill her and in Mass Effect 3 , you’ll come across the Breeder in “Attican Traverse: Krogan Team” who can either be killed or spared.

Garrus’ Attitude – If you decide to go the Paragon route, Garrus will be more law-abiding and mention how he rejoined C-Sec in Mass Effect 2 but couldn’t do much. If you go the Renegade route, Garrus will be more of a loose cannon and talk about trying to be a Spectre in Mass Effect 2 (which didn’t work out).

Rita’s Sister – In the Citadel, you’ll receive this assignment to help Rita find out about her sister Jenna. Check out the video below for the best way to resolve it. If completed and Conrad Verner survives in Mass Effect 1 and 2 , then Rita will save him in Mass Effect 3 . Failing to complete the assignment and having Verner survive in ME 1 and 2 results in him dying in the third game during “Medi-Gel Sabotage Mission.”

UNC: Hostile Takeover – Upon completing this, you can choose to kill or spare Helena Blake. Killing her means she won’t appear in the sequels. Spare her and she’ll appear in Mass Effect 2 on Omega in Afterlife.

Citadel: The Fan – The first step for this Assignment begins on the Citadel. Finishing different Mission Worlds will unlock the remaining two. If you have two points in Charm or Intimidate, use either option to have Conrad leave (he’ll then appear in Mass Effect 2 ). If you use any other options like “It’s a bad idea”, “It’s not going to happen” or “No”, Conrad will leave and subsequently be killed, thus not appearing in the sequels.

Tali’s Trust – Following the completion of “UNC: Geth Incursions”, go speak to Tali in Engineering. If you let her copy the Geth data, then in the mission “Freedom’s Progress” in Mass Effect 2 , selecting “I’ll prove it’s really me” will allow for gaining Tali’s trust (since you can reference the incident). Not letting her copy it or ignoring Tali results in the option being unavailable and her not trusting you immediately in the sequel.

Citadel: Family Matter – Complete this part will result in the couple in question appearing in Mass Effect 2 . Based on your decision regarding whether they should opt for gene therapy or not, you’ll see the result. They can also be found in the Presidium Commons in Mass Effect 3 . Not completing the assignment means they’ll be absent in Mass Effect 2 . Though found in the Presidium Commons in the third game, Shepard will not know them.

Virmire: Kirrahe Lives or Dies – On Virmire, you can help out Kirrahe by completing four different objectives. In the “Destroy Flyers” part, destroying the fuel tanks when the Flyer is on the refueling platform will result in Kirrahe living. He’ll then appear in Mass Effect 3 on Sur’Kesh. Ignoring the Flyer will see Kirrahe dying. Mordin will talk about him in Mass Effect 2 while Lieutenant Tolan replaces him in Mass Effect 3 .

Hanging Up on the Council – Throughout the game, you can choose to hang up on the Council multiple times. Check out the video below to see what happens if you keep disconnecting the call. It’s hilarious, if nothing else.

UNC: Hades’ Dogs – Completing this assignment will see Miranda and Tali referencing it in Mass Effect 2 . It will also be mentioned in the Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC. Not completing it means that it won’t be referenced.

Virmire: Spare or Kill Rana – Another decision on Virmire involves an Asari scientist named Rana. Sparing her means she appears in “Dossier: The Warlord” in Mass Effect 2 but in Mass Effect 3 , she’s referenced as being indoctrinated. Killing her means she won’t appear in the second game or be referenced in the third.

Virmire: Wrex Lives or Dies – A cure is available for the Genophage but must be destroyed. Wrex isn’t having it though and if you don’t want him to die, you’ll need to either have eight points in the Charm stat or finished the Assignment “Wrex: Family Armor.” If you don’t have either option, then Shepard can either shoot him or have Ashley shoot him. If Wrex lives, he’ll survive in Mass Effect 2 and 3 . If he dies, then Wreav will replace him (though it’s easier to fool him when sabotaging the Genophage cure in ME3 ).

Virmire: Ashley or Kaiden Dies – Of course, that’s not the only tough choice on Virmire. You’ll have to choose between saving either Kaidan or Ashley. The one left behind will die while the other appears briefly in Mass Effect 2 while being a recruitable squad member in Mass Effect 3 .

Conversation with Saren – One last major thing on Virmire will affect the final battle and it involves Saren. Choose the Investigate option when speaking to Saren – if you select “It’s already happened” or “You are indoctrinated”, then certain options will open up in the battle against him later. Go with “Join me” or “Sovereign will betray you” and you’ll only need to have 9 points in Charm or Intimidate to convince Saren.

Race Against Time: Final Battle – When you finally encounter Saren, you can make him commit suicide to skip the first part of the boss fight. You need 12 points in Charm or Intimidate (unless you chose the right options on Virmire to reduce these requirements). Select either Charm or Intimidate option that comes up, then Saren will kill himself. If neither option is available, you’ll have to choose “This is pointless” and fight him.

The Destiny Ascension – After the fight with Saren, you have the option to either save the Destiny Ascension or focus on Sovereign. Check out the video below to see what you get for saving the council versus not saving them. If saved, the Destiny Ascension will be a major asset in Mass Effect 3 (with less human contribution). Focusing on Sovereign results in an all-human council in Mass Effect 2 . Choosing a human councilor doesn’t have much consequences so go with either Anderson or Udina.

Asari Writings, Data Recovery and Elkoss Combine License – The Elkoss Combine License is obtained from the Wards’ Expat. You can also get it from Opold on Noveria. The Feros: Data Recovery Assignment is found by talking to Gavin Hossle on Feros. For the Asari Writings, you need to find 10 out of 15. Completing all of these and ensuring that Verner survives by Mass Effect 3 will result in the Military Strength of his Dark Energy Dissertation being increased. Not doing this or having Verner die beforehand won’t provide the increase or the dissertation.

UNC: Asari Diplomacy – Completing the assignment results in Shepard remembering Nassana’s manipulation in “Dossier: The Assassin” on Ilium. Not completing it will result in Shepard and Nassana being strangers to each other.

Citadel: The Fourth Estate – Talking to the reporter here will make her remember you in Mass Effect 2 and 3 . Ignoring the reporter will result in her not knowing Shepard in the sequels.

UNC: Rogue VI – Completing this assignment results in different NPCs responses in the sequels. If Shepard was hostile when EDI appeared, then they’ll have additional dialogues with Miranda and EDI in Mass Effect 2 (along with a revelation in Mass Effect 3 ). Not completing the assignment won’t result in additional dialogues, and the incident will be briefly referenced in Mass Effect 3 .

Bring Down the Sky – Choosing to save the hostages in the DLC mission will see Balak escaping and three explosives needing to be disabled. You’ll encounter Balak again in “Citadel: Batarian Codes” in Mass Effect 3 . Attacking Balak results in the hostages being killed but you’ll net more rewards. Balak can also be executed or taken into custody afterwards.

Mass Effect 1 Legendary Edition

Walkthrough missions - eden prime, prologue: on the normandy.

mass effect important assignments

This is the first mission in Mass Effect, which will begin immediately after you’re finished with character creation.

Often the top-right choices in dialog will have a Paragon bias, while the bottom-right choices will have a Renegade bias.

Often the top-right choices in dialog will have a Paragon bias, while the bottom-right choices will have a Renegade bias.

Joker and Kaiden on the Bridge ¶

After the intro scenes you’ll find yourself chatting with Joker and Kaiden, who are bickering over Joker’s disdain for Nihlus. Your first dialog option in the game is also your first opportunity to earn Paragon or Renegade points, and a fine excuse to discuss a system that’ll be ubiquitous throughout the trilogy. If you pick “I agree.” (the top-right option) you’ll earn Paragon +2 , while if you respond with “Cut the chatter!” you’ll earn Renegade +2 . The top-right option in dialog is usually Paragon-leaning, while the bottom-right option is often Renegade-leaning, although it’s important to note that this doesn’t always result in you gaining Paragon or Renegade points, as the next response you can make is relatively inconsequential. Dialog options in other locations on the dialog wheel tend to be neutral and/or exploratory, the exception being blue or red colored text, which indicates that you’re using your Charm or Intimidate talents, respectively.

Normandy: Combat Information Center ¶

Make your way down the hallway opposite the bridge and as you go note the airlock to the right. Beyond a row of terminals you’ll find the CIC - Combat Information Center, where you’ll hear Navigator Pressly arguing via an intercom. Chat him up and exhaust his dialog options to score some Codex Entries, which are worth some XP.

Secondary - Ships and Vehicles / Starship Sensors

Continue on past the CIC table until you hear more arguing, this time between Corporal Jenkins and Doctor Chakwas. Jenkins is playing the gung-ho marine and Chakwas is arguing for restraint. When you get the chance, respond with “Relax Jenkins.” for Paragon +2 or “Part of the job, Doc.” for Renegade +2 , then exhaust their dialog options for another Codex Entry.

Codex Entries
Primary - Citadel and Galactic Government / Spectres

Normandy: Communications Room ¶

Continue on into the Communications Room and talk to Nihlus, who will grill you a bit before Captain Anderson shows up and reveals the truth: this isn’t just a shakedown run. Worst kept secret on the ship, really. Captain Anderson will fill you in on the details and you’ll be able to question him at your leisure. When you’re done, a transmission from Eden Prime changes the nature of your mission considerably, and provides you with a much better opportunity to prove yourself to Nihlus.

After a bit more chatter with Anderson you’ll be deployed on Eden Prime .

Mass Effect Mission Order: the best sequence to tackle story missions in

Mass Effect has a fairly open-ended structure where once you get your hands on your ship, the Normandy, you can tackle most of the game’s core story locations and missions in any order you like. However, we do think there is a best mission order in which to tackle things.

This is, of course, all suggested. The nature of Mass Effect’s story means that you can and should think about what sort of order you’d like to approach everything in and then go with your own gut.

With all that said, we do have our own favored mission order for Mass Effect 1 which is based on a few factors - primarily an even-handed difficulty ramp-up, and the best possible pacing for the story, especially in the later parts of the game. We’ll explain our optimum order below.

mass_effect_mission_order_optimum_best.png

Mass Effect Mission Order: the optimal mission sequence, according to us

The game begins with a string of missions starting with Prologue: On the Normandy and Prologue: Find the Beacon. This is followed by Citadel: Expose Saren.

On the Citadel you’ll have the opportunity to recruit Urdnot Wrex (Citadel: Shadow Broker & Citadel: Wrex) and Garrus Vakarian (Citadel: Garrus) - and we recommend you do these, as these are two squad mates, great characters, useful in battle, and key players throughout the entire Mass Effect Trilogy - though you can opt not to recruit one of them at all if you wish.

Also on the Citadel, there’s a wide range of side quest assignments you can pick up and play at your discretion. They’re covered in our full Mass Effect 1 side quest assignments list .

Once you get control of the Normandy, you’ll be able to fly to the other core story mission planets in any order you like. We recommend the following order:

  • Find Liara T’Soni: head to Therum in the Knossos System, Artemis Tau Cluster. You want to do this first as Liara is a squad member, and rounds out your team with an expert Biotic user (which is Mass Effect's mage-style class).
  • Citadel: side quests mop-up. All quests from your previous visit remain open, but some new ones are available after finishing your first story planet, including the side quest exclusive to your Shepard's pre-service history background . We recommend you complete Citadel: Scan the Keepers using our Keeper Locations guide at this time, in particular.
  • Asteroid X57: Bring Down the Sky: this is DLC, but it slots better into the earlier part of the story. It’s included in the remastered legendary edition of the game.
  • Noveria: Geth Interest & Matriarch Benezia: you should take Liara on this mission if you can. Completing this story world unlocks more side content throughout the galaxy.
  • Citadel & Uncharted World Exploration: more side quests mop up
  • Feros: Geth Attack & The Thorian: Tali is a killer squadmate on this mission, where you’ll be fighting a lot of Geth.
  • Pinnacle Station: this is DLC, and isn’t available at all in the new legendary edition remaster; so skip this if you’re on that version.
  • Point of No Return: Complete any remaining side quests and assignments here, as the story becomes a rollercoaster from here on out. Remember, completing many side quests is key to a great many things, including amassing enough cash to unlock the best weapons in Mass Effect .
  • Virmire: Saren’s Plan / Assault: we’ve got a separate guide on the big choices on Virmire if you need help.
  • Ilos: Find the Conduit / Trench Run / Race Against Time: be aware that once you travel to Ilos, it truly is the point of no return aside from starting over in a new game plus. When you trigger the visit to Ilos, your Mass Effect romance option will be locked in and the romance scene will take place.

Obviously this is a suggested order, but we feel this is an optimum order for a well-paced, well-balanced    play-through of Mass Effect, even on Insanity difficulty.

As a general suggestion, try not to use the same pair of squad members for all story missions and side missions. All have interesting things to say, and you’ll benefit from taking people with a vested interest - missions involving the Krogan, for instance, are Wrex’s deal. Tali will always have more to say when the Geth are involved. Additionally, you’ll want to think about how useful their powers are. Tali isn’t very good against biotic opponents, but her tech powers can tear Geth to pieces easily.

This article is part of a series. As you move on to the next games, check out our Mass Effect 2 Mission Order and Mass Effect 3 Mission Order pages for the same advice in those games - which are longer and more complicated.

Mass Effect Beginner's Tips Guide - Legendary Edition

There's a galaxy to save, and these tips will get you ready for the fight ahead in Mass Effect: Legendary Edition.

By Darryn Bonthuys on May 19, 2021 at 5:50PM PDT

It goes without saying that Mass Effect: Legendary Edition isn't exactly a small game, seeing as it bundles and remasters the first three entries in BioWare's grand space odyssey together into one gigantic package. Like any good RPG of its time, Mass Effect was built on various customizable character classes, an entire spaceship of equipment to manage, and a whole lot of dialogue choices.

If you're new to Mass Effect and are reading this guide, then fear not! We've got some handy tips below to help you get into the swing of things right out of the space-gate going into the trilogy. From combat to galactic readiness, here's everything to help you get started in Mass Effect: Legendary Edition. For more about how the collection stacks up, be sure to read our Mass Effect: Legendary Edition review in progress .

Know Your Role

It's important to know your class's strengths.

With Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, there's a more unified approach to how class systems work between all three games. Each class serves a particular need and playstyle, whether they be Jack-of-all-trades combat experts or titans wielding biotic powers. There are obviously finer details to be explored throughout the entire trilogy as you grow Shepard's powers, but the broad strokes of each class are:

  • Soldier - Weapons specialist designed around offensive play and great for beginners wanting a straightforward approach.
  • Adept - Biotic specialist whose abilities give the player a range of options for managing enemies but requires lots of fine-tuning.
  • Engineer - A support specialist whose tech powers can open locked crates, amplify shields, and keep mobs at bay.
  • Vanguard - Mixing elements from the Soldier and Adept classes, Vanguards are great at close-quarters combat.
  • Sentinel - A living shield that can soak up damage while providing versatile offensive capabilities with tech and biotic powers.
  • Infiltrator - A saboteur with a cloaking device, Infiltrators are perfect for players who prefer to keep enemies at a distance

Take An Experimental Approach To Combat

Don't be afraid to experiment a bit more with your combat abilities.

You don't just need to take a cover-based approach to combat, as Mass Effect has numerous options for dealing with enemies. Each of the classes above provides a vast number of different tactics, such as Soldiers having an entire arsenal of close- to long-range weaponry to play with, Adepts using their powers to wreak havoc on the battlefield, and Sentinel players shrugging off damage while closing in for the kill.

Combined with the various skill trees, ammo types, explosives, weapons, and tactics, each combat arena is ripe for versatile approaches to combat that end up making the entire business of saving the galaxy a whole lot more fun!

Should I Go Renegade or Paragon?

Committing to a morality system ensures you down the most ideal story paths in Mass Effect.

Many games have featured a morality system over the years, but Mass Effect's take on that idea resulted in a morally complex character. While Shepard's goal of saving the galaxy won't be swayed no matter which action you take when presented with the opportunity to be noble or a bit of a badass, it's how Shepard goes about their business that is changed.

Sticking to the Paragon route is a more morally challenging route that forces players to talk their way out of situations, while choosing the Renegade path typically ends an encounter with a fight. The choice is yours, as you'll either become a soldier who always takes the high road when it comes to conflict or a rebel who has no qualms about using more ruthless methods so long as they get the job done.

Paragon and Renegade options are easy to spot during conversations, as blue choices on the dialogue wheel represent the more peaceful approach to resolving situations while red text indicates a more direct and dangerous path. Once a conversation has ended, you’ll also see your Paragon or Renegade gains in the corner of the screen.

It’s also important to commit to one route as opposed to a mix. The reasoning is that it heavily impacts the opportunities that open up as you get further into the series. Being wishy-washy with your approach may lock you out of these moments, so be sure to be as consistent as possible. You can learn more about how this impacts the game in our guide detailing why it’s crucial to go either total Renegade or Paragon.

Max Out Your Charm/Intimidate Skills

Talking is one of the most important things you'll do in Mass Effect, so make sure you've got the ability to navigate the tougher discussions.

The Mass Effect games require plenty of talking between missions, and if you want to get as many dialogue options as possible to continue on your Renegade or Paragon path, you're going to want to become a smooth talker. Unlike other stats which are unlocked with points earned from gaining new levels, Charm and Intimidate stats only open up by earning their respective Paragon and Renegade points.

If you choose not to invest in these personality traits, you'll still see those speech options but those various quips and threats will be grayed out as inaccessible options.

Talk To Teammates

Get to know your allies.

As soon as you finish a mission, start a conversation with all of your Normandy crew members, or at least your favorite ones! Your allies will always have something to talk about, and getting to know them will eventually unlock more missions and relationships, and have an impact on how the saga of Mass Effect progresses.

Complete As Many Side-Missions As You Can In Mass Effect 1

The characters you meet in Mass Effect 1's side-missions frequently show up again in subsequent games.

There's no shortage of optional missions--known in the game as Assignments--to use as stepping stones to increase your skills in Mass Effect, but these are more than just useful grinds for experience points. There'll be actual ramifications from these missions that will be felt in Mass Effect 2 and 3, some minor and some major. Completing these missions also provides a lot of context to the game, shedding new light on characters and organizations that you'll encounter in your journey and enhancing your personal journey through the trilogy when these events are referenced.

To ensure you don’t miss out on the game’s best side stories, we’ve compiled a feature detailing fun side missions you need to play .

Do As Many Of Mass Effect 2's Loyalty Missions As You Can

Loyalty Missions are a great way to connect with your crewmates.

Feeling attached to the crew you've assembled in Mass Effect's first sequel? Then you'd better focus on completing their various Loyalty Missions, which not only creates a much better sense of camaraderie on the Normandy, it also has a huge impact on the final mission that the game builds up to.

For more details on Mass Effect 2’s pivotal climactic mission, be sure to check out our guide detailing everything you need to know .

Make A Choice, Accept The Consequences

Not every decision is an easy one to make in the Mass Effect games.

It might be tempting to roll back to an earlier save so that you can make the best decision possible, but you're doing yourself a disservice by quantum-leaping through moments that require you to select an option at the spur of the moment. With a storyline that stretches across dozens and dozens of hours across three games, no two Shepards are ever the same. There's a story worth experiencing, actions that have actual consequences, and some very hard decisions that you'll have to make that will have devastating ramifications.

Plus if you don't like your original playthrough, you can always start a new one to see how that journey would have played out. That's a whole lot of value right there.

In A Rush? Mass Effect's Interactive's Genesis Comics Provide A Huge Shortcut

If you'd rather start at Mass Effect 2 or 3, the Genesis comics can be a quick way to make key decisions and have them transfer over.

If you've decided to skip Mass Effect 1, which is a shame considering all the work done to remaster it, and you want to play the Mass Effect sequels first while dealing with the ramifications of the decisions made in the first game, there is an option for a more unified experience in the form of the Mass Effect: Genesis interactive comics.

Originally part of Mass Effect 2 for its PS3 launch as a way to catch up on the first game and seen again in Mass Effect 3 when it arrived on Wii U, these comics provide crucial story recaps and chances to make vital decisions based on events from the first two games, which will be used to tailor a more unique Mass Effect 3 experience.

Get The Galaxy Ready

Galactic Readiness is paramount in Mass Effect 3.

When Mass Effect 3 originally launched, one of its big draws was the idea of "galactic readiness" for the war against the Reapers. Players could work on this through the game's main campaign, going off the beaten path with side missions, and engaging in multiplayer to prepare the galaxy for war. Working on those side activities increased the galaxy's overall preparation for dealing with the Reapers, with a higher percentage resulting in a better ending overall.

For Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, a few things have changed. Mass Effect 3's multiplayer may not be present, but you can still increase your galactic readiness score by playing through the entire trilogy from start to finish. Various key quests will increase your rating, and every activity in the game contributes to the ending you get, affecting story beats along the way.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition: 10 Assignments In The Second Game You Need To Play

Borderlands 3 - Official Reveal Trailer

Resident evil 9’s supposed direction bodes well for possible franchise diversity, 8 best open-worlds in rockstar games, ranked.

In the second game in the Mass Effect Legendary Edition , Commander Shepard spends most of their time assembling a team capable of taking on the Collectors. Outside of the main narrative, though, are a bunch of side quests labeled 'assignments.' Some of these missions are found by scanning planets, others by running into people, and a few were once part of downloadable content.

RELATED:  Mass Effect 2: Every Romance Option, Ranked

These assignments help build the detailed world of Mass Effect by showing that not every issue is tied to the looming Reaper threat. Several of Mass Effect 2's side missions stand out as being better or more significant than others. For the richest gameplay experience, here is a collection of adventures that players shouldn't miss.

10 Normandy Crash Site

Mass Effect 2 Screenshot From Normandy Crash Site

'Normandy Crash Site' is among the many DLCs that are available as part of the Legendary Edition . In it, Shepard visits the wreckage of the SR-1, remembering their time as its Commander. There's no action to speak off during the assignment, as the only objective is to find and collect the former crews' dog tags.

Bioware didn't need to include gunfire and biotic powers for this quest. The emotional goodbye to the original ship and crew is enough to make it a must-play for any fans of the first game.

9 Citadel: Krogan Sushi

Mass Effect Legendary Edition Screenshot Of Krogan Sushi Assignment

While walking around the Zakera Ward on the Citadel, Shepard can overhear a conversation between two Krogans. The big brutes are discussing if there are fish in the Presidium lakes.

Players can learn what is or isn't in the water by speaking to the Groundskeeper in the Dark Star Lounge, but it's up to them what they do with the information. While it's not a long or complicated assignment, it's still entertaining and includes one of the funniest uses of the game's morality system.

8 N7: Javelin Missiles Launched

Mass Effect 2 Screenshot Javelin Missiles Launched Assignment

After completing 'N7: Blue Suns Base,' Shepard will receive a message about a colony under attack. The attackers are a group of Batarians who are planning to fire Javelin missiles at the area.

Because of the circumstances, the Commander only has five minutes to complete the assignment. Players have to forgo the typical Mass Effect tactics of staying in cover and picking shots to go for a more aggressive approach. It's always interesting when a quest can make gamers play differently than they're used to.

7 Normandy: Serrice Ice Brandy

Mass Effect Legendary Edition Screenshot Of Dr. Chakwas Drinking

While she's not a part of Mass Effect 2's long list of squad members , Dr. Chakwas is always a welcome addition to the Normandy crew. First appearing in the original game, the ship doctor is a loyal friend throughout the entire trilogy. And during 'Normandy: Serrice Ice Brandy,' players finally spend some quality time with her.

RELATED:  10 Hidden Details Everyone Missed In Mass Effect 2

The assignment only consists of one shopping ship and a conversation. However, the drunken interactions between Shepard and Chakwas are sweet, funny, and a little emotional, providing more depth to the characters.

6 N7: MSV Estevanico

Mass Effect Legendary Edition Screenshot Of Cerberus Shuttle During MSV Estevanico Assignment

'N7: MSV Estevanico' is one of the more well-hidden assignments in Mass Effect 2 . Players only find the quest by scanning Zanethu in the Hourglass Nebula, and those who never stumble across it miss out on a unique experience.

The entire mission takes place in the unstable remains of a downed freighter. Shepard has to traverse the crash site by walking across tight beams, and sometimes creating pathways for themselves. There's plenty of tension while players are finding their way around the place, with the constant feeling that the whole thing could fall at any minute.

5 Omega: The Patriarch

Mass Effect 2 Legendary Edition Screenshot Of The Patriarch

The Queen of Omega, Aria, is a fascinating character. Yet, she's not the most open person. Any chance to find out more about the powerful Asari is welcome, and that's just what 'Omega: The Patriarch' provides.

In the assignment, her underling, Grizz, asks Shepard to protect the former ruler of Omega, aka The Patriarch. While Grizz delivers the message, it actually comes from Aria, as she wants the Krogan to be safe to serve as her 'trophy.' Alternatively, players can figure out their own ways of helping the once proud leader.

4 Citadel: Crime in Progress

Mass Effect Legendary Edition Screenshot Of Quarian During Crime In Progress

While on the Citadel, Shepard can come across a dispute between a Volus and a Quarian. The former accuses the latter of stealing his credit chit, and a C-Sec officer is starting to believe the Volus. Players must find out what happened to the guy's money as part of the 'Citadel: Crime In Progress' assignment.

RELATED:  Mass Effect: Tali'Zorah's 10 Best Quotes, Ranked

It's a short quest, but it's interesting to see how the Volus and C-Sec officer treat a Quarian. Not only do they distrust her, but they also show her no respect. Thankfully, Shepard can save the day and put both of these jerks in their place.

3 N7: Imminent Ship Crash

Mass Effect 2 Screenshot Of Geth Threatening Humans In Imminent Crash

The Geth are among the most powerful races in the galaxy and some of the most fun to fight. Yet, in the second game, players don't get to battle them too often. They appear as enemies in several missions, but not as often as mercs or mechs.

The inclusion of the synthetic beings in  'N7: Imminent Ship Crash' enhances the assignment. Additionally, it's another tense timed mission, as the story is about the MSV Broken Arrow (found in the Nariph system) being on a collision course with a planet.

2 Overlord: Atlas Station

Mass Effect 2 Legendary Edition Screenshot Of Gavin Archer

A DLC in the original Mass Effect 2 , 'Overlord' is one of the most compelling questlines in the entire Legendary Edition . It revolves around an AI/human hybrid that has taken over several Cerberus stations.

In 'Overlord: Atlas Station,' players finally get to find out how the hybrid was created, and see all of the project lead's morally questionable decisions. The fascinating revelations, plus some horror-like tones, make it a memorable section of the game.

Mass Effect 2 Legendary Edition Arrival Dr. Kenson Being Tortured

'Arrival' sees Shepard attempt to stop an incoming Reaper invasion. Unfortunately, a bunch of indoctrination individuals makes the hero's mission a difficult one. There are a few unique elements to the assignment that make it feel different from the others, such as the inclusion of a stealth section and the absence of any squadmates.

It's surprising that the game considers Arrival an assignment instead of a main mission, since it's such a big part of the trilogy's story. Without revealing spoilers, players should complete this one towards the end of the game, as it sets up Mass Effect 3 .

Mass Effect: UNC: Major Kyle Assignment Walkthrough

16 RPGs With Great Job Systems

One year later and baldur's gate 3 is still the biggest game in the world, fan-made fallout 1 remake will be playable later this week.

The original Mass Effect game has plenty of enjoyable assignments that teach you the universe's lore . For instance, if you want to understand more about how galactic society treats biotics, UNC: Major Kyle is a good one to play.

RELATED: Mass Effect: Asari Consort Walkthrough

The assignment is about an unstable Alliance Officer who's formed a biotic cult. Most of his followers join his cause because they believe the general populace looks down on them. You're sent to investigate the group after two other Alliance soldiers go missing during their visit to the commune. Whether your time at the place also ends with people dying is up to you. Here's how to complete the mission.

Starting The Mission

Mass Effect Screenshot Of Presrop Location

You can trigger the assignment in multiple different ways, from hacking into the embassy computers to looking at data on server nodes. Regardless of how you receive the mission, though, you start it by traveling to the Century System in the Hawking Eta cluster. At this point, Admiral Hackett will appear on comms and tell you about the mission if he hasn't already done so.

Once the conversation is over, search the Century system for the moon named Presrop and land on it. When you're on the surface of the moon, you want to visit the Biotic Compound in the south .

Getting To Major Kyle

Mass Effect Screenshot Of Biotic Compound Location

The Biotic Compound contains two main structures. You must go to the bigger one and interact with the entrance. Instead of simply walking in, though, a voice talks to you through the door. The guy is not very inviting as he immediately tells you to go away.

RELATED: Mass Effect Races Ranked By Biotic Prowess

The conversation that follows is important as it heavily impacts the next few minutes of the quest. Depending on your dialog options , the biotics might allow you to meet with Major Kyle, or they may try to stop you from reaching their leader at all costs.

Peaceful Method

Mass Effect Screenshot Of Shepard Asking About Major Kyle

If you want to get in to see Major Kyle while avoiding bloodshed, pick the following options:

  • "I Have To See Major Kyle."
  • "I'm Here To Help" Or "Alliance Officers Are Dead."
  • "He Needs My Help." (Requires Charm Points) Or "He'll Get You All Killed." (Requires Intimidate Points)

Alternatively, if you chose the 'ruthless' background when creating your Shepard, you can just mention that you know Major Kyle , and you'll be allowed access to him.

The leader isn't actually inside the big building, though. He is in the bunker next to it , which you can now enter. Run through the place to find the Major in a room at the back of the structure .

Violent Method

Mass Effect Screenshot Of Shepard Demanding To Be Let In

Choosing the violent method makes the conversation go a lot quicker. All you need to say to the cultist is, "you can't keep me out." Then manually override the door to get inside, where a group of hostile biotics are waiting for you.

Having the absolute best weapons in the series isn't required to take these enemies down as they're not well armored. However, what they lack in defenses, they make up for it in their offensive abilities. Make use of cover to avoid getting knocked down and pick your shots.

Mass Effect Screenshot Of Bunker Terminal

You must fight your way to the control room on the first floor to find a terminal that allows you to unlock the bunker next door . After you do so, you can leave this building and enter said bunker .

Naturally, this new place also contains plenty of enemies that are trying to protect their leader. Take them down and head to the rooms at the back of the complex . The one on the left has another enemy, while the one on the right contains Major Kyle.

Speaking With Major Kyle

Mass Effect Screenshot Of Major Kyle

Upon entering Major Kyle's room, a conversation triggers. Once again, this scene can end peacefully or with people dying .

From talking with Kyle, it's clear that he's not among the most evil villains in the series , so it's understandable if you want to stop the man without gunning him down. By saying these exact things, you can keep the peace:

  • "Where Are The Investigators?" (This First Choice Isn't As Important As The Other Ones)
  • "Safe? They're Not Safe!"
  • "You Can't Help Them Now." (Requires Charm Points) Or "Surrender Or They All Die!" (Requires Intimidate Points)
  • "I Know This Isn't Easy."
  • "I Believe You."

In this situation, causing things to turn violent is a simple task as most of the dialog options lead to guns being drawn .

For instance, you can simply say "enough crazy talk" when the opportunity presents itself, which will result in Shepard shooting Major Kyle. You then need to defend yourself against all of the cultists that remain alive.

Finishing The Mission And Triggering The Debrief

Whether Major Kyle and his followers are dead or not, you need to return to the Normandy and use the galaxy map to complete the mission . Hackett will then call in again and debrief you. After the talk is over, the assignment is complete.
