Wordle took the world by storm, eventually being bought up by the New York Times. If you missed the boat, it's a deceptively simple word game. You have six guesses to figure out a five-letter word. After each guess you're given feedback in the form of yellow and green boxes—yellow for letters that, while part of the secret word, are in the wrong position, and green for letters that are correctly placed. It doesn't take long to play each day's puzzle, and you can brag to friends if you got lucky and nailed it on the first guess.

Browser word games still feel like all the rage lately and Sqword is one that will really stretch your skills. The goal is to take each letter you're given from the deck and place it in a 5x5 grid to create as many words as possible. Never have I thought so hard about consonant density. In The Republia Times, you've got to take the day's news and use the limited time on your clock to construct a front page that will keep the public's interest while ensuring their loyalty to the government. Play : Agar.io | Developer: Matheus Valadares

Though Agar.io looks simplistic with its colored circles on a checker-lined background, it's surprisingly challenging. Your circle starts off very small, but when you eat all of the little colored dots around you, you get bigger. As a small circle, you move quickly and are able to dodge the bigger circles trying to eat you. When bigger, you need larger portions of food. To grow even more, you must eat the other players.

Since smaller players move faster, you can split your circle into two different circles of equal mass. When splitting your circle, the new one will shoot out, which is useful for enveloping the smaller player running away from you. Once a bigger player gobbles you up, you have to restart as the smallest possible dot. The circle of life is brutal.

Isleward 

Play : Isleward | Developer: Big Bad Waffle

Isleward doesn't look like a multiplayer game at first. It's a low-res roguelike that has you choosing what character you want to play before dumping you on your own into the city of Strathford. In Strathford you get your bearings, learn how to queue up actions and explore. There are also a few low-level monsters that you can find and kill to level up. 

Eventually you'll run into other people and hopefully convince them to adventure with you. A party of different characters is much stronger than one player alone, and significantly more fun. There's a whole world to explore, loads of islands, and lots of loot to find.

Slither.io 

Play: Slither.io | Developer: Steve Howse

Like Agar.io, Slither.io is about eating small dots (this time ones that glow) to grow bigger. The twist: you're a snake . Your body gets longer as well as slightly wider as you eat the various dots that are littered around. You can't eat your enemies, but if you time it well, you can force another snake to run into your body. This will make them vanish, leaving behind loads of body dots to collect. 

Slither.io also lets you customize the skin of your snake, and there are some awesome options. Consider pimping out your snake with a necklace that dangles as they slither.

Kingdom of Loathing

Play : Kingdom of Loathing | Developer: Asymmetric Publications

Kingdom of Loathing is a sort of pseudo-mmo kind of thing, firmly embedded in the web interface, with drop down menus letting you select your attacks, and page refreshes for every new area. It's a little ugly, but Kingdom of Loathing isn't trying to be pretty. It's trying to be funny, and it's been going strong for years.

Take, for instance, the pun-based classes. The Sauceror flings hot sauce in people's faces, and they get damaged, because hot sauce would really hurt if someone threw it at your face. The Disco Bandits dance at their enemies, fuelled by moxie. And then there's the Haiku Dungeon, where not only are all the descriptions of your enemies in haiku form, but so are your attacks.

The whole game is consistently absurd and amusing, from the enemy types, to the genre conventions it apes so cleverly. And while you can't directly play with other people, you can steal their stuff, join guilds and interact.

There are a lot of multiplayer Pictionary-style browser games out there which achieve the basic premise of drawing prompts and guessing them. Skribbl.io is a handy one as it lets you set up a private room without creating an account and includes quite a few custom options like hints, drawing time, number of rounds, and a custom set of words. It has a nice little avatar maker too if you're determined to be a Skribbl.io regular. Of all the many choices out there, Skribbl makes it quite easy to shoot your pals a link to play together without making them jump through hoops.

Pokémon Showdown

If battling trainers is the part of Pokémon games you enjoy, then Pokémon Showdown is for you. This entirely unofficial battle simulator lets you jump straight into matches against other players without having to level up or care for your pocket monsters beforehand. If you die, you don't need to go back to the Pokémon Center and rest up either—you can bounce straight into a new battle. 

Pokémon Showdown lets you battle using either a random or a custom team. You can then quickly go through a match, selecting moves and countering the other trainer. This fast-paced game takes all of the work out of raising pokémon, leaving just the gratuitous pokémon takedowns.

If you've ever played the party game of betrayal Mafia or Werewolf, or indeed Among Us, then Town of Salem should feel familiar. You're randomly cast as either a townsperson, a neutral, or one of the mafia. If you're a townsperson, you need to track down mafia members and stop them before they kill everyone in town. 

There are many different roles for each category of player with unique abilities to use in the night phase of the game. At night, players plan out their moves and make notes in their will. If they die during the night, the remaining players can use their wills to, hopefully, achieve their goals.

This hack and slash follows the core principles of the genre: killing people you don't like the look of, and finding loot. There are a bunch of different modes, but the most popular is the default Ruins mode.

Ruins gives you the chance to explore as a member of one of three teams. You can kill other players on different teams, break boxes, and find loot. Armor, potions, and new weapons will help you survive longer in this desert wasteland. Your main objective is to gain bones which appear when people die. If you get enough bones you become the king of the ruins. There are a bunch of other modes, some with shorter times and easier objectives, including soccer. Yes, soccer.

Neptune's Pride

Play : Neptune's Pride | Developer: Helmet Games

Neptune's Pride is the epitome of backstabbing, two-faced, genuine human nastiness. Up to eight players start with a few star systems, and then expand outwards, until they meet someone else, and either decide to not kill each other  immediately, or have at it.

It's real-time strategy in the same way that glacier movement is real-time. Because the fleets take hours—sometimes days—to get from star to star, you're left with a good deal of time to play the diplomacy game, trying to cement alliances and sabotage those of your enemies. You try to get them alone and start to gently wear away at their trust, leaving a human-shaped receptacle for suspicion. Before you know it you've got galactic civil war on your hands, and you can mop up the pieces.

Or you could play it like an honorable, decent human being. But where's the fun in that?

The similarities to Bomberman are certainly no coincidence, but the couch co-op classic wasn’t available to play on PC for a long time. Thankfully Game of Bombs filled that gap and now successfully emulates the original’s fun game mechanics.

Judging by what Bomberman fans think of the official Bomberman releases available on Steam, you may even prefer Game of Bombs, but it's not a competition. Game of Bombs isn't just a good Bomberman game, most importantly it's a good multiplayer Bomberman game, one that makes it easy to play on a large board with many other opponents.

The Bomberman formula is doubtlessly a classic, so if you're looking for something to pick up for a few fun, high energy rounds of gaming, Game of Bombs is your best bet.

This text-based multiplayer zombie survival game combines the best of zombie fighting and tower defense in one handy package. Base building doesn't automatically mean Fortnite , and the zombie horror genre is an excellent fit for building mechanics. 

But there's a lot more to Die2Nite than building – you're part of a whole town of survivors, and you are one of 39 other real players. As the name suggests, Polycraft (not to be confused with the match-3 game) is a game with low-poly visuals that features crafting. Of course that's not all there is to it, and it's not just a Minecraft clone, either,  otherwise Polycraft wouldn't have made our list of the best online games.

You craft a base for your Wildling friends, which eventually needs protecting, but instead of just building automatic weaponry and hunkering down as you do in plenty of tower defense games, Polycraft asks you to get involved yourself, and its combat is strongly reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda . Get crafting, get building and get fighting – Polycraft doesn't get boring. Even though Polycraft has been out for a while, it still feels incredibly good to play, with dynamic shuts between combat, base building and light exploring.

Superhot Prototype

A lot of popular Steam games and console titles owe their popularity to sites like Miniclip and Newgrounds, hosts to countless free-to-play titles from small studios with marginal publishing budgets.

The challenge lies in the way of avoiding other snakes, because if you touch one it's game over.

Your score is measured by the length of your snake, the longest of which, at the time of writing, is about 20,000 points. There isn’t much nuance beyond that, aside from the fact that you can change the skin outfitting your snake to one of several different colors and styles. It’s a simple game, but that's what makes it one of the best online games, one that’s perfect for a few rounds and accessible as you don't have to click to play it.

Spelunky HTML 5

Just like the previously mentioned Superhot, Spelunky has humble origins. First developed by Derek Yu as freeware, then ported to the Xbox 360 in July 2012, the game was then ported to HTML 5 by Darius Kazemi. 

Spelunky's HTML5 version may not be visually impressive (it was created in GameMaker after all), but its randomly generated levels and brutal permadeath mechanics make it a modern classic. When it comes to online gaming, you don’t have to have the newest console or the latest titles to have fun. In fact, there are hundreds of thousands of free games available from your browser on your phone, computer or tablet. If you visit the website on your smartphone or tablet, you can play many of the same games without having to download apps. Some of the games are available only on the desktop version of the website.

You can play all of the games for free without having to create an account, but expect to see a few advertisements. In fact, I had to watch as many as three video advertisements (10-30 seconds each) before playing some games. 

There’s a huge variety of fun games on this site that will work on your computer, smartphone or tablet in your browser. You won’t have to download anything to play. 

If you do want to create an account, you can. With an account, you can invite friends and add other members playing online.

Many of the games that you’ll find online at Armor Games are also available as apps for iOS and Android devices, which means you can download them to your mobile device and continue playing away from the computer. 

I was impressed with the variety of games on this website. While you won’t find many well-known games like blackjack or checkers, you will find a lot of unique and interesting games created by Armor Games and independent developers. 

You can create a free account on the website to keep track of your high scores and favorite games, but the account isn’t necessary to play most games.

You’ll see ad banners on the page and maybe a short video before you get started, but nothing majorly distracting. I played a few games on this site and I was impressed by how quickly I was able to play without ads. 

You can access CrazyGames from any browser including your computer, phone or tablet. CrazyGames had an excellent mobile experience when I tried it out with my iPhone.

Free Online Games (FOG) allows you to play games for free on your computer and on your mobile device without having to download any apps. You’ll find a selection of 3D games, adventure games, defense games, driving games, flying games, multiplayer games and more. 

While the most popular games on this website seem to be more action-oriented, you can still find classic games like sudoku and chess by searching for them using the search bar at the top of the screen. Additionally, you can browse the games by category under the “More Games” tab.

During the time I spent on FOG, I saw a few ads for other games on the site as well as video advertisements during breaks in gameplay. While I did have to disable my ad blocker to play, the ads that I saw weren’t enough to be a major part of the experience on this website. 

If you want, you can create a free account using your email address, a username and a password in order to keep track of your progress and rank on high-score boards. But it isn’t required to play the games on the site.

7. Kongregate

Kongregate offers online games in many categories including action, multiplayer, adventure, strategy and puzzles. You may have to create an account to play some games on this website, but it’s completely free and easy to create one.

When you visit the desktop version of the website, you’ll see ads across the top and bottom of the page while you’re playing games as well as a few on the front page. For me, they didn’t drastically impact the overall experience. If you visit the mobile version of the website, you’ll be redirected to the app store to download games to your device.

Independent game developers can also upload games to Kongregate, which gives you access to thousands of unique titles.

While I was browsing the available games, I found that some full versions were available for free while other games were available only as free trials or pay-to-play options. You can click the “Free online” tab to filter your results. 

You can visit the website on your phone or tablet and play available games for free in the browser, but the format wasn’t the best for my iPhone. On a tablet or a device with a bigger screen, I think the games would have run much more smoothly.

You don’t need an account to play games on Pogo. It offers board games, card games, hidden object games, poker games, puzzles and more. 

If you use an ad blocker, you may be asked to disable it before playing select games on Pogo. While there were video ads before games and during breaks in gameplay, they didn’t significantly hinder the experience for me. You can sign up for a paid membership that offers ad-free gameplay, but it isn’t necessary to enjoy the site.

If you want to save your progress on the games, you’ll need to create an account, but it’s free.

Some of the games on Pogo are also available on mobile devices and tablets. Unfortunately, some games are only available as free trials and require users to pay to continue playing. Still, there are tons of completely free options that make Pogo a free gaming website worth a visit.

If you haven’t found your fix at any of the other websites listed here, try Shockwave. You’ll find a variety of online and downloadable games in categories including puzzles, hidden object games, strategy games, racing games, card & board games, adventure games and more. 

While there were a few advertisements on the home screen and during gameplay, I was able to leave my adblocker running through several games before being asked to disable it. Video advertisements did pop up periodically during breaks in gameplay, but I didn’t feel like it took away from the overall experience.

There are dozens of websites that you can visit to find free online games. If you’re looking for simple online versions of classic games, I would recommend checking out 247 Games . Kids will find a big selection on Addicting Games , Agame and FOG . If you’re hoping to find online games that are also available on a mobile browser or as an iOS/Android app, check out Armor Games , CrazyGames and Kongregate .

Keep in mind that you won’t have to create an account to play games on most of these websites, but if you do, the accounts are easy and free to make.

As you visit different links, I recommend keeping a simple, free ad blocker installed on your computer or browser . You may have to disable it to play select games, but it’s still worth having if you plan on visiting a few different websites.

You want to lead a tribe of cannibals that hate technology? Go ahead. You want to build a technological utopia where everyone sheds their weak flesh and goes on to live as cyborgs? Cool. Or you can do a myriad other things, like getting rich off of harvesting your prisoners' organs and selling them on the black market, joining an aristocratic space empire, or whatever else you can think of. Oh, and we haven't even talked about mods yet. Those are fun as well.

Crusader Kings 3

Oh look, it’s a game about watching a map change color. PC gamers love those. But where Civ lets us take turns, Crusader Kings 3 plays out in real time. And that’s not where the differences end. You won’t be working your way towards modern times here. Instead, it’s all about swords and steel and disinheriting family members (or murdering them) to ensure your heir takes all the land you’ve conquered during your tenure. There’s more court scheming and, uh, family love here than on Game of Thrones and no matter how good your intentions are, it'll all end in debauchery.

It’s a cultural phenomenon, boasting over one trillion views on YouTube videos of the game. Like virtual Lego, it allows its players to go wherever their imagination takes them. People have recreated entire cities, built spaceships, and even made working calculators in it. To top it off, the specs are so forgiving that it’s a perfect laptop game , it's highly modable , and you can revisit your favorite spots thanks to specific seeds .

There aren’t as many RTS titles as there used to be in PC gaming, but maybe that’s because StarCraft II already perfected the art. Play through the story mode and every new mission throws up some fresh dynamic, some new variable, teaching you in the same way Super Mario drip feeds its mechanics. All of it is fun, but it serves one purpose: getting you ready to face other players online. Thing is, you probably never will be. High-level StarCraft players are like another species, capable of issuing hundreds of orders per minute. We’ll be over here, turtling.

You can go back and play the original Doom right now and it’s still good, but there are plenty of modern boomer shooters that are also worth your time. You can always switch this one out for Fortnite , but there’s something undeniably PC about PUBG. Supergiant games

Combining fantastic action RPG gameplay with satisfying roguelike mechanics and storytelling, and presenting it with an incredible visual style and a soundtrack fit for the gods, indie developer Supergiant Games landed a commercial and critical success with Hades. All of its elements are just perfect fits for each other with weapons that feel great to fight with, divine powers that feel awesome to unleash, and drama from the most dysfunctional family in the history of mythology that is interesting to dive into deeper. It’s also an absolute wrist-killer, but sacrifices must be made, eh?

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

It’s playable on Alexa and will probably come pre-installed on the brain chips of the future, but PC gaming is where Skyrim belongs. Already a beast of an RPG that you never truly finish, Skyrim’s PC mods are transformative to the experience. You can make it more pretty, add entire new questlines, and even change the mechanics of the game. That’s why Skyrim will live forever as one of the all-time greats. Todd Howard will likely also release a new edition of it every three years just because he can. And you'll buy them.

Sid Meier’s Civilization VI

Another one where the hours simply melt away as you play for just one more turn, Civilization is essentially a game where you watch a map change color, but that’s way more exciting than it sounds. Settle cities and grow your influence through diplomacy, culture, and military might, all while trying not to get nuked by Gandhi or fending off Queen Victoria, who really wants you to be interested in a trade agreement with England.

Dishonored 2

Old-school immersive sims don’t hold up too well these days, but thankfully, Arkane Studios is carrying the torch. Inspired by games such as Thief, Dishonored 2 plonks you in a whalepunk city and tasks you with assassinating a series of targets. Using magical powers, you can teleport, turn into animals, possess people, stop time, and more. The amount of creative solutions to every encounter is mind-boggling.

PARALYMPIC CLASSIFICATION

The Paralympic system of classification intends to guarantee fair competition between all athletes. Athletes go through the classification process before taking part in a Paralympic competition, during which they are assessed and allocated a sport class in accordance with the degree and nature of their eligible impairments. This classification is carried out by a panel of medical and technical experts responsible for evaluating the impact of their impairment(s) on specific tasks and activities fundamental to the sport and the athlete’s sporting performance. There is no single classification system that applies to all sports due to their history and the way they are played, which is why each discipline has its own system.

Paralympic classification is a functional classification system, in which all athletes who compete in the same category are sure to have similar functional abilities in terms of movement, coordination and balance. This is why athletes with different impairments may be allocated the same sport class and compete against one another. 

The classifications below are designated by a letter, typically the sport's initial (for example, S for swimming) and a number. The lower the figure, the greater the impairment—though this is not always the case.

Blind football

Outfield players must be classified B1 (very low visual acuity and/or no light perception). However, to ensure fair competition, all outfield players must wear eyeshades.

The goalkeeper can be fully sighted or partially sighted (B2 or B3).

'B' stands for 'Blind.'

Boccia is split into four classes. BC1 and BC3 athletes may have assistance (BC1 are typically dependent on a powered wheelchair, BC3 can use a ramp), while BC2 and BC4 athletes compete independently.

Sports assistants for BC3 players keep their backs to the game during all innings. They are only present to carry out the player’s commands; they are not allowed to turn around to watch the game, nor are they allowed to advise the player. There is therefore a strong connection between the player and his or her assistant during a match. BC1 player’s assistants can see the pitch because they are positioned behind the playing area and intervene at the players’ request.

'BC' stands for 'Boccia'.

To be eligible, athletes must have less than 10 per cent visual acuity.

Athletes are divided into three categories ('B' = 'Blind'):

• B1 : No light perception or inability to recognise a shape.
• B2 : Visual acuity not exceeding 1/30th after correction or visual field not exceeding 5°.
• B3 : Visual acuity not exceeding 1/10th after correction or visual field not exceeding 20°.

Each player must wear an opaque mask as well as an eye patch to ensure fair competition.

Para archery

• Open class (recurve bows): archers shoot from a standing position at a distance of 70m at a 122cm target made up of 10 concentric circles scoring from 10 points down to 1 point from the centre outwards.
• Open class (compound bows, for archers with little strength in the arms): archers shoot from a sitting position at a distance of 50m at an 80cm five-ring target made up of the 10-6 point bands.
• W1 (compound bow limited to 45lbs in draw weight and without magnifying sights): quadriplegic archers with an impairment in the lower limbs, trunk and one arm shoot from 50m at a 10-band 80cm target.

Para athletics

Athlete classification is defined by a letter and a number: 'T' for track and jump events and 'F' for field events. Figures represent impairments as follows:

• 11-13: vision impairment
• 20: intellectual impairment
• 31-38 : co-ordination impairments 
• 40-47 : short stature, upper limb competing with prosthesis or equivalent, lower limb competing with prosthesis or equivalent 
• T51-54: wheelchair races
• F51-58: seated throws
• 61-64 : lower limb competing with prosthesis

Para badminton

"WH" stands for “Wheelchair”:

• WH1 : athletes using a wheelchair with severely impaired leg and trunk function. 
• WH2 : athletes using a wheelchair with minor impairments to leg and trunk function. 

"SL" stands for "Standing / Lower":

• SL3 : athletes competing standing with a lower limb impairment and balance problems walking or running. 
• SL4 : athletes competing standing with less severe impairment than in SL3. Athletes demonstrate lower limb impairment and minor balance problems walking or running. 

"SU" stands for "Standing / Upper":

• SU5 : athletes in this class have impairment of the upper limbs. The impairment could be on the playing or non-playing hand. 

"SH" stands for "Standing / Short stature":

• SH6 : short stature and standing athletes

'KL' corresponds to a kayak and double paddle and 'VL' corresponds to a pirogue (Va’a) and single paddle.

• KL1-VL1 : athletes with no or extremely limited trunk function and no function in the legs. 
• KL2-VL2 : athletes with partial leg and trunk function, able to sit up straight in the kayak but may require a high-backed seat. 
• KL3-VL3 : athletes with full function of their trunk and partial function in the legs, able to sit with the trunk bent forwards in the kayak and use at least one leg.

Para cycling

'C” stands for 'cycling', 'H' for 'handbike', 'T' for 'tricycle' and 'B' for 'blind' (for tandems).

• Solo: five categories, from C1 to C5, practised by athletes competing with prosthesis or limited movement of upper or lower limbs.
• Handcycling: five categories, from H1 to H5, practised by athletes with spinal cord injuries or competing with prosthesis in one or both lower limbs.
• Tricycle: T1 and T2, for athletes with locomotor dysfunction and balance issues (such as cerebral palsy or hemiplegia).
• Tandem: VI, for athletes who are blind or vision impaired who compete with a sighted pilot.

Para equestrian

• Grade I: athletes have severe impairments affecting all limbs and the trunk.
• Grade II: athletes have either a severe impairment of the trunk and minimal impairment of the arms or moderate impairment of the trunk, arms, and legs.
• Grade III: athletes have severe impairments in both legs with minimal or no impairment of the trunk or moderate impairment of the arms and legs and trunk.
• Grade IV: athletes have a severe impairment or deficiency of both arms or a moderate impairment of all four limbs or short stature.
• Grade V: athletes have vision impairment, complete blindness, a mildly impaired range of movement or muscle strength, or a deficiency of one limb or mild deficiency of two limbs.

The Games programme concerns visually impaired athletes, divided into two categories:

Para powerlifting

All athletes with a functional limitation of the lower limbs or hips that prevents them from practising standing weightlifting compete together in different bodyweight categories.

These functional limitations include:

• Orthopedic disability
• Cerebral palsy
• Neurological disability
• Paraplegia and tetraplegia
• Progressive neurological disability

There are 20 weight categories: 10 each for men and women.

Para rowing

Athletes are divided into three categories ('PR' is the abbreviation for Para rowing):

• PR1 : single sculls (for individual men and women)—reserved for rowers without trunk or leg function using two oars. 
• PR2 : double sculls (mixed)—a team of two rowers (male and female) each of whom has two oars. Reserved for rowers who can only use their upper body to row and their seat is fixed so their legs remain straight.
• PR3 : coxed four (mixed)—a team of four rowers (two women and two men) and a coxswain, with each rower using one oar. Category for people using their arms, trunk, and legs, with a maximum of two visually impaired people in the boat.

Para swimming

S1-S10 / SB1-SB9 / SM1-SM10: physical impairment

The greater the number, the less severe the athlete’s limitation(s).

Athletes with different impairments may compete against one other as sport classes are allocated based on the impact the impairment has on swimming, rather than on the impairment itself.

S / SB / SM11-13: vision impairment

• 11 : athletes with extremely low visual acuity and/or no light perception. Swimmers must wear blackened goggles during races to ensure fair competition. 
• 12 : athletes with a higher visual acuity than athletes competing in the S/SB11 sport class and/or a visual field of less than 10 degrees.
• 13 : athletes with the least severe vision impairment eligible for Paralympic sport. They have the highest visual acuity and/or a visual field of less than 40 degrees.

In order to ensure a fair competition athletes in the S/SB11 sport class are required to wear blackened goggles.

S / SB / SM14: intellectual impairment

Swimmers with an intellectual impairment, which typically leads to athletes having difficulties with pattern recognition, sequencing, and memory, or having a slower reaction time which impacts sport performance in general.

The letters correspond to the swimming style:

• 'S' (Swimming): butterfly, backstroke, crawl
• 'SB' (Swimming breaststroke): breaststroke
• 'SM (Swimming Multi): multi-swimming events.

Para table tennis

There are 11 classes in total (five sitting, six standing): TT1-5 are for wheelchair athletes, TT6-10 are for standing athletes and TT11 is for athletes with intellectual impairments. Table tennis players who have difficulty gripping the racket may use orthotics to attach the racket to the hand or use strapping to maintain their grip of the racket handle only.

Para taekwondo

Athletes are divided into two categories ('K' for Kyorugi, the Korean word for sparring):

• K43 includes athletes with bilateral amputation below the elbow, or equivalent loss of function in both upper limbs. 
• K44 includes athletes with unilateral arm amputation (or equivalent loss of function), or loss of toes which impact the ability to lift the heel properly.

Para athletes in the K43 and K44 categories compete together in different bodyweight categories.

Para triathlon

The classification is based on the letters 'PT' for 'Para triathlon' plus the disability category:

• ‘WC’ for ‘Wheelchair’
• 'S' for 'Standing'
• 'VI' for 'Visual impairment'

Triathlon has nine classes.

• PTWC 1-2: athletes with limitations in lower and upper limbs, using a handcycle for the cycling segment and a racing chair for the running segment. PTWC1 and PTWC2 compete in combined events, with an interval start system per sport class to ensure a level playing field.
• PTS 2-5: athletes with limitations in lower and/or upper limbs who do not require a handcycle for the cycling segment or a racing chair for the running segment. Assistive devices such as prosthetic legs and/or bike modifications are allowed.
• PTVI 1-3 : athletes with vision impairment. Interval starts ensure a level playing field between partially sighted triathletes and blind triathletes competing with a guide.

Shooting Para sport

• SH1 : athletes able to hold their gun without difficulty and shoot from a standing or sitting position (in a wheelchair or chair). SH1 athletes may use a pistol or a rifle.  
• SH2 : athletes are unable to hold their rifle independently, so use a stand, but can aim by themselves and control the rifle when they shoot. Certain athletes may have an assistant to reload their gun.

'SH' stands for 'Shooting'.

Sitting volleyball

Sitting volleyball has two classes: VS1 and VS2 (athletes with a less severe impairment). Sitting volleyball players demonstrate a physical impairment in one or several upper or lower limbs. Athletes must be able to move around easily and safely in a seated position. Only two VS2 athletes can be on a team’s roster.

Wheelchair basketball

Wheelchair basketball players are classified on a points system according to the degree of their impairment(s). Points range from 1 to 4.5, with 1 representing the most severe impairment. At the Paralympic Games, the sum of points for the five players on court for each team must not exceed 14.

Wheelchair fencing

Wheelchair fencing is split into two Paralympic categories:

• Category A : fencers in this category must have a disability affecting at least one lower limb.
• Category B : fencers in this category have a disability that prevents voluntary movement of the trunk.

Wheelchair rugby

Every player is assigned a points value based on their functional ability, from 0.5 for a player with the least physical function through to 3.5 for the most physical function. The total on-court value for each team of four cannot exceed 8 points (8.5 points if a female athlete is on the court). Players with the most limited mobility (between 0.5 and 1.5 points) due to their impairment (quadriplegia or equivalent) occupy a primarily defensive position in the game.

• 'Open' : athletes with a lower limb impairment(s).
• 'Quad' : athletes with both upper and lower limb impairments.
