Think and Grow Rich: The Legacy is a 2017 documentary film directed by James Whittaker, based on the classic self-help book 'Think and Grow Rich' by Napoleon Hill published in 1937. The film explores the success principles outlined in Hill's book and features interviews with successful entrepreneurs, business leaders, and motivational speakers.

The film begins with a brief introduction about Napoleon Hill and his success formula, which emphasizes the importance of visualizing and having a burning desire for achieving success. The audience is then introduced to a diverse cast of entrepreneurs and business leaders who have applied Hill's principles in their lives and have become successful.

The first interview is with Rob Dyrdek, professional skateboarder and entrepreneur, who talks about his journey to success and how he uses visualization to achieve his goals. He also shares his thoughts on the importance of building a team and taking calculated risks.

Next, the film features an interview with John Lee Dumas, the founder and host of the Entrepreneur on Fire podcast, who discusses the role of persistence in achieving success. He emphasizes the need to stay focused on one's goals and to take action every day, even if it's just a small step.

Other successful entrepreneurs and business leaders interviewed in the film include Lewis Howes, author and founder of the School of Greatness, Barbara Corcoran, real estate mogul and star of Shark Tank, and Rob Angel, the creator of the popular board game Pictionary.

The interviews are interspersed with dramatized re-enactments of Napoleon Hill's life and journey to discovering his success formula. The re-enactments are well-produced and provide a historical context for Hill's book and its impact on the world.

Throughout the film, the audience is presented with Hill's success principles and how they have been applied by successful entrepreneurs and business leaders. These principles include the importance of having a definite purpose, the power of positive thinking, the need for a mastermind group, and the role of faith in achieving success.

The film also features interviews with two of Hill's direct descendants: Don Green, the CEO of the Napoleon Hill Foundation, and J.B. Hill, Hill's grandson. They share personal anecdotes about Hill and his legacy, as well as the Foundation's ongoing efforts to preserve and promote his teachings.

Overall, Think and Grow Rich: The Legacy is an inspirational and motivational film that provides valuable insights into the success principles outlined in Napoleon Hill's book. The interviews with successful entrepreneurs and business leaders are engaging and provide practical advice for those looking to achieve success in their own lives. The well-produced re-enactments provide historical context and help to bring Hill's teachings to life. This film is a must-watch for anyone interested in personal development and achieving success.

Book Review: Napoleon Hill's Masterpiece, Think and Grow Rich

Join Headway in unpacking the principles of success in our review of Napoleon Hill's classic, Think and Grow Rich.

Think and Grow Rich Review - Headway

In our ongoing quest to inspire the mindset shift needed to make headway in life and work, we're examining another classic that has transcended the boundaries of time. Today, we spotlight a stalwart in the personal development genre - ' Think and Grow Rich ' by Napoleon Hill . Unveiled to the world in 1937, this groundbreaking work remains the gold standard for countless readers worldwide, seeking guidance on wealth, success, and personal growth.

Hill's magnum opus has sparked numerous debates and drawn critics and admirers alike, yet its fundamental essence remains firmly rooted: a scientifically formulated path to success and wealth. These teachings continue to breathe life into new generations of entrepreneurs, professionals, and those on the path of personal growth.

But what makes 'Think and Grow Rich' a timeless beacon? This article will dissect Hill's teachings, examine its applicability today, and hopefully inspire you to find the potential within you.

The Foundation

'Think and Grow Rich' sprouted from an intriguing encounter between Hill and Andrew Carnegie, one of history's most prosperous industrialists. As the story goes, Carnegie, who left a significant impact on the industrial era, challenged Hill to interview the world's most successful individuals, distilling their insights into a formula that could guide others to success.

Hill embarked on a 20-year odyssey, studying the lives of numerous high achievers, including Henry Ford, Alexander Graham Bell, and Thomas Edison. His experiences, insights, and teachings are condensed in 'Think and Grow Rich,' a 13-step philosophy towards success and riches.

The Principle Elements

'Think and Grow Rich' isn't a get-rich-quick scheme. Rather, it's a philosophy centered around a transformational mindset shift. Its essence lies in 13 key principles, which, when combined, provide the framework for the accumulation of wealth.

The starting point of all achievement is a burning desire. Hill emphasizes that for a desire to be effective, it must be definite, persistent, and backed by unwavering faith.

Hill strongly propounds that faith is the head chemist of the mind, and when fused with the vibration of thought, it can be transmuted into reality.

Auto-suggestion:

The subconscious mind is highly suggestible and influences the conscious mind. Hill suggests that one can direct one's thoughts toward desired outcomes through constant, conscious auto-suggestion.

Specialized Knowledge:

General knowledge, no matter how great in quantity or variety, is of little use in the accumulation of money. However, specialized knowledge, applied with definiteness of purpose and plans, can lead to riches.

These are a few of the principles Hill puts forward. The complete list includes imagination, organized planning, decision, persistence, the power of the mastermind, the mystery of sex transmutation, the subconscious mind, the brain, and the sixth sense.

Think and Grow Rich: Summary & Review

think and grow rich book cover

Think and Grow Rich (1937) is one of the best-selling self-help books in which author Napoleon Hill shares his “secrets” and methods for getting rich and, more in general, for getting what you want in life.

Bullet Summary

#chapter 1: desire, #chapter 2: faith, #chapter 3: auto-suggestion, #chapter 4: specialized knowledge , #chapter 5: imagination , #chapter 6: organized planning, #chapter 7: decision, #chapter 8: persistence , #chapter 9: the master mind, #chapter 10: sex transmutation, #chapter 11: the subconscious mind, #chapter 12: the brain , #chapter 13: the sixth sense, #chapter 14: how to outwit fear, real-life applications.

  • Develop a deep Desire to achieve your goals
  • Have Faith that you will achieve them
  • Reach decisions quickly and stick to them (it’s a habit)
  • Visualize yourself as already having reached those goals (law of attraction)

Napoleon Hill starts the introduction while covertly hyping up what’s about to come.

He says the “secret” of each chapter will manifest to you IF YOU ARE READY FOR IT.

When it does manifest, you should have a toast because that will be the most important turning point of your life.

My Note: This is a power move on the readers

On my first read, I found the introduction note and capitalization condescending and irritating. I was looking for information and for wisdom, not for big hyperbole -the CAPS are straight from the author-. And I want the info presented to me as clearly as possible, and not through some hide-and-seek game that already felt manipulative to me. That said, let’s get straight into this Think and Grow Rich book summary.

Hill’s introduction is basically an extreme teachers’ frame power move .

Call it, if you wish, a “guru frame”, which is very popular among gurus and… Charlatans -up to you to tell which from which, and the difference, if any-.

I then saw this video by Coffeezilla and he does a great job at telling you who Napoleon Hill truly was (heads up: a scammer).

Highly recommended:

The first quality you should possess to THINK AND GROW RICH is the DESIRE  for riches.

Here are the 6 practical steps of desire:

  • Fix in your mind the exact amount you desire
  • Determine exactly what you will give in return
  • Establish a definite date
  • Create a definite plan and start with it whether you are or not
  • Write down all the previous step
  • Read your statement aloud before sleeping and right after waking up. See, feel, and believe you’re already in possession of the money.

Napoleon Hill says that no one is ready for acquiring riches until he believes he can acquire them. The state of mind indeed must be BELIEF, not hope or wish.

And he adds that nothing is impossible for the person who backs DESIRE with enduring FAITH.

When you mix FAITH with thought, the subconscious mind picks up the vibration, translates it into spiritual equivalent, and transmits to “Infinite Intelligence”, like in prayer.

Napoleon Hill says you can become faithful with an affirmation or repeated instructions to the subconscious mind via auto-suggestion.

My Note: Modern psychology has debunked the self-help myth of affirmation and shown that, in many cases, it can actually be counterproductive.

Hill says that any emotionalized thought -any thought charged up with emotion- which is mixed with faith will begin to immediately translate into the physical equivalent.

Our subconscious will ONLY recognize and act upon thoughts that have been well-mixed with emotions or feelings. Thus, you must mix DESIRE with BELIEF, or FAITH.

Why Thinking Positive Is Key

Our mind takes the nature of what is most present in it.

That is why you should think positively and eradicate negative emotions. And a mind imbibed with positive emotions provides the right breeding ground for FAITH to blossom.

My Note: Positive thinking is good up to a certain point. Too much positive thinking is harmful, also read “ pop-psychology myths “.

Self-Confidence Formula

  • Know you have the ability to achieve the object of your Definite Purpose, so DEMAND of yourself continuous action and promise right now to keep acting
  • Realize that what you focus on will eventually come true, so focus thirty minutes a day on the person you intend to become
  • Spend 10 minutes a day demanding yourself the development of SELF CONFIDENCE
  • Clearly write down a description of your DEFINITE CHIEF AIM in life
  • Understand that no wealth can endure unless built upon trust and justice. So engage in no transaction that does not benefit all parties; induce others to serve you by serving others, eliminate hatred, envy, jealousy, selfishness and cynicism by developing a love for all humanity.

Repeat this formula aloud once a day with full FAITH that it will gradually influence your THOUGHTS and ACTIONS so that you will become a self-reliant and successful person.

Auto-suggestion is what we’d call today visualization.

When visualizing the money you intend to accumulate, close your eyes and see yourself rendering the service, or delivering the merchandise you intend to give in return for this money.

You auto-suggest with the following process:

  • Go to a quiet place, close your eyes, and repeat aloud the written statement of the amount of money you intend to accumulate, the time limit, and the description of how you will do so. Most importantly, SEE YOURSELF ALREADY IN POSSESSION OF THE MONEY. I quote Napoleon Hill on what he recommends you tell yourself
  • Repeat night and morning until you can vividly imagine the money you want to accumulate.
  • Place a copy of the written statement where you can see it night and morning and read it until it’s been memorized.

This is what you should repeat yourself:

I believe that I will have this money in my possession. My faith is so strong that I can now see this money before my eyes. I can touch it with my hands. It is now awaiting transfer to me at the time, and in the proportion that I deliver the service I intend to render in return for it. I am awaiting a plan by which to accumulate this money, and I will follow that plan, when it is received.”

Napoleon Hill says that skepticism is normal in human beings with all new ideas, but if you keep following the instructions, then belief and ABSOLUTE FAITH will soon take root.

At that point, you’ll be able to say you are the true master of your faith and the captain of your soul.

My Note: Studies have shown that visualization can also be harmful if it replaces action and if it provides enough good feelings that you will not want to work hard to make it happen in real life.

You will need specialized knowledge -as opposed to useless general knowledge- of the service, merchandise, or profession you intend to pursue in return for riches.

Imagination is what you will use to create plans.

Napoleon Hill says that imagination only works when the subconscious mind is vibrating at a super rapid rate when, for example, stimulated with strong desire.

And imagination becomes more developed through USE.

The ideas you develop will then be transmuted into cash through the power of definite purpose in conjunction with definite plans.

I absolutely love when Napoleon Hill says:

God seems to throw Himself on the side of the man who knows exactly what he wants, if he is determined to get JUST THAT!

And I love when he says that an idea, as crazy as it may sound at the beginning when coaxed, nursed, and enticed to remain alive, will gradually become a giant. That idea will eventually acquire power and it will then drive you.

God seems to throw Himself on the side of the man who knows exactly what he wants

Napoleon Hill recommends you get your plans checked and approved by the member of your Master Mind.

And if the first plan you adopt does not work, replace it. And keep replacing all plans until you find one which DOES WORK.

The Attributes of Leadership

  • UNWAVERING COURAGE: nobody likes a leader who lacks self-confidence and courage.
  • SELF-CONTROL: He who cannot control himself cannot control others.
  • A KEEN SENSE OF JUSTICE
  • DEFINITENESS OF DECISION: wavering is not a leader-like quality.
  • DEFINITENESS OF PLANS: without a plan, you’re like a ship without a rudder.
  • THE HABIT OF DOING MORE THAN PAID FOR: a leader will do more than he requires his followers to do
  • A PLEASING PERSONALITY
  • SYMPATHY AND UNDERSTANDING: a leader has sympathy for his followers and he understands them
  • MASTERY OF DETAIL
  • WILLINGNESS TO ASSUME FULL RESPONSIBILITY: a leader must take full responsibility for the mistakes and shortcomings of his followers. If he shifts responsibility, he won’t be a leader for long
  • COOPERATION: Leadership calls for POWER, and power calls for COOPERATION.
He who cannot control himself cannot control others

Napoleon Hill says that LACK OF DECISION -or procrastination- is one of the main causes of failure.

The habit of reaching decisions promptly and changing them slowly is one of the main common traits among people who accumulated riches.

Persistence differentiates the poor from the rich.

  • Persistence in applying the rules of this book
  • Persistence in the face of misfortune

That’s what will make you rich -or at least that’s what Hill says-.

As a matter of fact, persistence alone will give success even to people with little qualities.

Here are a few ways to develop persistence:

  • Definite purpose spurred by a burning desire
  • A definite plan continuously put into action
  • Positive mindset insulated against all negative influences
  • Alliance with one or more people pushing us to follow through
The habit of persistence is the best insurance against failure

The “Master Mind” is the coordination of knowledge and effort, between two or more people for the attainment of a definite purpose.”

A Master Mind built in a spirit of harmony among its members will amplify the power of each mind to give birth to an entity that is more powerful than the sum of its components.

Sex is the most powerful creative energy.

Napoleon Hill says that there is no great leader without the driving force of sex: sex energy is indeed the creative energy of all genii.

But sex energy must be transmuted from the desire for actual sex into a different form of desire and action. Then, and only then, it can be the driving force of a genius.

Why do most people succeed only in their 40s or 50s?

Hill says it’s because they waste sexual energy in the overindulgence of the sex, rather than harnessing it and putting it to different and higher uses.

Romance + Sex = Genius

Adding romance to sex puts us closer to Infinite Intelligence. When sex is coupled with romance, then a genius is born.

My Note: this was eye-opening for me. I will admit that the impetus for starting The Power Moves came after reading about sex transmutation.

The subconscious mind receives and files any impressions from the senses or thoughts, regardless of their nature.

That means that if you fail to plant DESIRES and the right thoughts in your subconscious, you will leave your destiny to chance.

To imprint your subconscious with the thoughts of your choice, you must plant your thoughts through the imagination, and mix them with faith.

Chapter 12 of Think and Grow Rich describes the brain.

But you’re not going to learn neurobiology from a book written when neurobiology didn’t even exist.

Napoleon Hill had a council of advisers.

Except that they were all in his imagination. Napoleon Hill describes the imaginary meetings he had with the members of his council.

The meetings started becoming more and more real, with the people in the room taking on different habits. It was becoming so real that he started getting worried.

The sixth sense, as Think and Growth Rich explains, comes with mastery and continuous application of all the other principles outlined.

The enemies you must steer clear of are indecision, doubt, and fear.

The three, Napoleon says, are closely related. Indecision breeds doubt, and the two together give birth to fear.

Getting rid of fear is imperative or our mind will manifest physically exactly what our fears dictate.

Napoleon Hill ends by reminding us we have absolute control of our thoughts. And by controlling our thoughts, we control our destiny.

My Note: In this chapter, Hill suggests “drowning our worries” by being too busy to be annoyed by them. This is a terrible strategy that you probably shouldn’t follow (read Carnegie and Brene Brown ).

think and grow rich the movie reviews

Some of the lessons in Think and Grow Rich are timeless and can benefit you, such as:

  • Keep your thoughts positive
  • Develop a deep desire for achieving your goals
  • Have faith you can reach your goal

There is plenty of criticism that any critical thinker has to move to Think and Grow Rich.

Dogmatic & Religious-like, Often Unscientific

Napoleon Hill lays out dogmas without citing any research or opening any door to doubt.

I feel there’s a huge spiral of silence around this book: everyone says it’s great so nobody has the guts to call out the BS in it.

But to me, it was jarring. I prefer authors such as Ray Dalio who attribute their success to “knowing they don’t know” and always cross-checking their conclusions (instead of “forcing yourself into belief and conviction”).

Napoleon Hill says for example that when someone DESIRES something so deeply that he can bet his entire future on a single shot, he is then sure to win. I hope nobody is ever too sure to win the lottery, albeit I’m afraid there are plenty of people who lost everything chasing their deep desires.

All Or Nothing Extremes

Extremes are appealing to people and help sell.

And Think and Grow Rich is packed with extremes, from desiring riches like a man stranded in the desert desires shade and water, to the unwavering faith of your ultimate victory.

More often than not instead, balance across many concomitant actions and pursuits is more effective and more conducive to goal achievements than extremes. Read more on the law of optimum balance here:

The Law of Optimum Balance

Paternalistic. And ignores psychology, human nature, and power dynamics

The author says that laborers will certainly receive more money (when?) and will be led by better leaders (very paternalistic to imply they will be happy being led, with just a bit more money), BUT:

But first, they must give more to their employer, and stop this bickering and bargaining by force, at the expense of the public.

I appreciate a lot that Hill talks up collaboration since collaboration is also one of the tenets of this website.

But what he suggests is a naive collaboration (and he sides with the owners, too).

First of all, you can’t give much more screwing bolts in a plant. And if you only give more without making sure you have some leverage and negotiation power, then you are hoping the employer will be nice. And you risk that the employer will likely take the lion’s share and give you the crumbs. Or, also possibly give you nothing and get a cheaper laborer as soon as he’s got the chance.

Also, read about “ enlightened collaboration ”

Life Strategy: The Enlightened Collaborator

The “Secret for Succes” Format Feels Like Hyped-Up Marketing BS

“preparing myself to take it to the world, to men and women who, without the secret, might go through life as failures”

There is no secret formula to follow that ensures success. And I personally don’t like that nasty power move and manipulative technique of framing those who don’t follow his formula as “failures”.

Getting Too Busy to Beat Worry Is Wrong

The strategy of being too busy to worry, the same suggestion as in Stop Worrying and Start Living , is plainly wrong. I’d recommend you don’t follow it.

Success Equals Money?

If your whole life’s meaning revolves around getting rich… I’d suggest you think twice about it. I’m not necessarily saying that you’re wrong or that it’s an unworthy goal, but to truly reflect how important it is to you.

Law of Attraction Is Unproven & Unfounded At Best

Hill says that:

thoughts are things, and when they are mixed with definiteness of purpose, persistence, and a BURNING DESIRE they will translate into riches.

This was the beginning of the biggest lie in the self-help literature: the law of attraction.

Conor McGregor has been quoted saying he manifests his thoughts into reality. Until he lost.

Tony Robbins talks about a couple who willed into their life two different lottery wins by believing they would win and acting as if they had already won it. In the meanwhile, thousands lost everything gambling.

I highly recommend the articles on this website on self-help myths , pop psychology   myths , and naive self-help :

Naive Self-Help: 10 Most Dangerous BS to Avoid

Think and Grow Rich has some great wisdom and some nonsense BS packaged with a mystic and mythic aura.

The fact that it’s one of the biggest sellers of self-help literature together with How to Win Friends and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People doesn’t mean it’s great or that you should read it.

Some passages and advice are unscientific, and also unscientific are some central tenets of the books -ie.: willing things into life-.

But many other tenets such as action, meditation, deciding, and persisting are timeless and you are well advised to put them into practice.

Be Careful of The Law of Attraction

I advise you to be cautious around unscientific recommendations.

The “law” of attraction is now a law at all.

It’s useful in focusing you on the positives and in giving you confidence in taking the necessary steps. But don’t expect the law of attraction to bring anything into your life without you putting in the work.

Bob Proctor has formed the habit of reading a few lines from Think and Grow Rich every day and has arrived at the conclusion that whatever challenge he may face, his solution will be found in the pages of Think and Grow Rich.

Another habit Proctor has formed that he would urge the reader to follow is to read the chapter on “Persistence” every day for 30 days at least twice a year.

“Don’t wait. The time will never be right.”

“Thoughts are things—and powerful things at that when they are mixed with definiteness of purpose, persistence, and a burning desire for their translation into riches or other material objects.”

Hill learned from years of experience with men that when a man really desires a thing so deeply that he is willing to stake his entire future on a single turn of the wheel in order to get it, he is sure to win.

“What a different story people would have to tell if only they would adopt a definite purpose and stand by that purpose until it had time to become an all-consuming obsession.”

“Opportunity has a sly habit of slipping in by the back door, often disguised in the form of misfortune or temporary defeat which why so many fail to recognize opportunity.”

“An intangible impulse of thought can be ‘transmuted’ into its physical counterpart.”

Know what you want and have the determination to stand by that desire until you realize it.

“One of the most common causes of failure is the habit of quitting when one is overtaken by temporary defeat.”

Before success comes into your life, you are sure to be met with much temporary defeat and, perhaps, some failure.

More than 500 of the most successful individuals this country has ever known told Hill that their greatest success came just one step beyond the point at which defeat had overtaken them.

“When riches begin to come, they come so quickly, in such great abundance, that one wonders where they have been hiding all those years.”

One of the main weaknesses of the human race is the average person’s familiarity with the word “impossible.”

A great many years ago Hill purchased a dictionary. The first thing he did with it was turn to the word “impossible” and neatly clip it out of the book. Hill advises you to do the same.

Another weakness found in many people is the habit of measuring everything and everyone by their own impressions and beliefs.

“When poet William Ernest Henley wrote the prophetic lines, ‘I am the Master of my Fate, I am the Captain of my Soul,’ he should have informed us that we are the Masters of our Fate, the Captains of our Souls, because we have the power to control our thoughts.”

“A burning desire to be and to do is the starting point from which the dreamer must take off. Dreams are not born of indifference, laziness, or lack of ambition.”

“Those who win in any undertaking must be willing to burn their ships and cut all sources of retreat. Only by so doing can one be sure of maintaining that state of mind known as a burning desire to win, which is essential to success.”

“Wishing will not bring riches. But desiring riches with a state of mind that becomes an obsession, then planning definite ways and means to acquire riches, and backing those plans with persistence which does not recognize failure, will bring riches.”

The method by which desire for riches can be transmuted into its financial equivalent consists of six definite, practical actions.

  • Fix in your mind the exact amount of money you desire. It is not sufficient merely to say, “I want plenty of money.” Be definite as to the amount.”
  • Determine exactly what you intend to give in return for the money you desire. (There is no such reality as “something for nothing.”)
  • Establish a definite date when you intend to possess the money you desire.
  • Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire, and begin at once, whether you are ready or not, to put this plan into action.
  • Write out a clear, concise statement of the amount of money you intend to acquire, name the time limit for its acquisition, state what you intend to give in return for the money, and describe clearly the plan through which you intend to accumulate it.
  • Read your written statement aloud, twice daily, once just before retiring at night and once after arising in the morning. As you read, see and feel and believe yourself already in possession of the money.

You can never have riches in great quantities unless you can work yourself into a white heat of desire for money and actually believe you will possess it.

“If you do not see great riches in your imagination, you will never see them in your bank balance.”

“If the thing you wish to do is right and you believe in it, go ahead and do it. Put your dream across, and never mind what ‘they’ say if you meet with temporary defeat, for ‘they’ perhaps do not know that every failure brings with it the seed of an equivalent success.”

“You may have been disappointed, you may have suffered setbacks and defeat during hard economic times, you may have felt the great heart within you crushed until it bled. Take courage, for these experiences have tempered the spiritual metal of which you are made—they are assets of incomparable value.”

All who succeed in life get off to a bad start and pass through many heartbreaking struggles before they “arrive.”

“No one ever is defeated until defeat has been accepted as a reality.”

“There is a difference between wishing for a thing and being ready to receive it. You are never ready for a thing until you believe you can acquire it.”

“No more effort is required to aim high in life, to demand abundance and prosperity, than is required to accept misery and poverty.”

“Nothing is impossible to the person who backs desire with enduring faith.”

“All achievement, no matter what may be its nature or its purpose, must begin with an intense, burning desire for something definite.”

“Faith is a state of mind which may be induced by autosuggestion.”

“Faith is a state of mind which may be induced, or created, by affirmations or repeated instructions to the subconscious mind, through the principle of autosuggestion.”

“Repetition or affirmation of orders to your subconscious mind is the only method of voluntary development of the emotion of faith.”

“All thoughts which have been emotionalized (given feeling) and mixed with faith begin immediately to translate themselves into their physical equivalent or counterpart.”

“Each of us is what we are because of the dominating thoughts which we permit to occupy our mind.”

“Any idea, plan, or purpose may be placed in the mind through repetition of thought.”

“Your subconscious mind recognizes and acts only upon thoughts which have been well-mixed with emotion or feeling.”

“When visualizing (with closed eyes) the money you intend to accumulate, see yourself rendering the service or delivering the merchandise you intend to give in return for this money.

“Go into some quiet spot (preferably in bed at night) where you will not be disturbed or interrupted, close your eyes, and repeat aloud (so you may hear your own words) the written statement of the amount of money you intend to accumulate, the time limit for its accumulation, and a description of the service or merchandise you intend to give in return for the money.”

“As you carry out these instructions, see yourself already in possession of the money. For example, suppose that you intend to accumulate $500,000 by the first of January, five years hence, that you intend to give personal services in return for the money in the capacity of a sales representative.”

Your written statement of your purpose should be similar to the following:

By the first day of January, [here state the year], I will have in my possession $500,000, which will come to me in various amounts from time to time during the interim. In return for this money, I will give the most efficient service of which I am capable, rendering the fullest possible quantity, and the best possible quality of service in the capacity of selling…. (describe the service or merchandise you intend to sell). I believe that I will have this money in my possession. My faith is so strong that I can now see this money before my eyes. I can touch it with my hands. It is now awaiting transfer to me at the time and in the proportion that I deliver the service, I intend to render in return for it. I am awaiting a plan by which to accumulate this money, and I will follow that plan when it is received.

“Repeat this program night and morning until you can clearly visualize (in your imagination) the money you intend to accumulate.”

“Place a written copy of your statement where you can see it night and morning, and read it just before retiring and upon arising until it has been memorized.”

“There are two kinds of knowledge. One is general; the other, specialized. General knowledge, no matter how great in quantity or variety it may be, is of but little use in the accumulation of money.”

“Knowledge is only potential power. It becomes power only when, and if, it is organized into definite plans of action and directed to a definite end.”

“The individual who can organize and direct a Mastermind Group of people who possess knowledge useful in the accumulation of money is just as educated as anyone in the group. Remember that if you suffer from a feeling of inferiority because your schooling has been limited.”

“Your major purpose in life, the goal toward which you are working, will help determine what knowledge you need.”

“As knowledge is acquired, it must be organized and put into use, for a definite purpose, through practical plans. Knowledge has no value except that which can be gained from its application toward some worthy end.”

“Successful people, in all callings, never stop acquiring specialized knowledge related to their major purpose, business, or profession.”

“The person who stops studying merely because he or she has finished school is forever hopelessly doomed to mediocrity, no matter what that person’s calling.”

“The way of success is the way of continuous pursuit of knowledge.”

“We rise to high positions or remain at the bottom because of conditions we can control if we desire to control them.”

“Anybody can wish for riches, and most people do, but only a few know that a definite plan, plus a burning desire for wealth, are the only dependable means of accumulating wealth.”

“The only limitation is that which one sets up in one’s own mind.”

“Ideas can be transmuted into cash through the power of definite purpose, plus definite plans.”

“Riches, when they come in huge quantities, are never the result of hard work. Riches come, if they come at all, in response to definite demands, based upon the application of definite principles, and not by chance or luck.”

“Success requires no apologies. Failure permits no alibis.”

“Your achievement can be no greater than your plans are sound.”

“No follower of this philosophy can reasonable expect to accumulate a fortune without experiencing temporary defeat.”

“When defeat comes, accept it as a signal that your plans are not sound, rebuild those plans, and set sail once more toward your coveted goal.”

“A quitter never wins—and a winner never quits.”

“A follower cannot reasonably expect the compensation to which a leader is entitled, although many followers make the mistake of expecting such pay.”

“Most great leaders began in the capacity of followers. They became great leaders because they were intelligent followers.”

“The person who can follow a leader most efficiently is usually the one who develops into leadership most rapidly.”

“An intelligent follower has many advantages, among them the opportunity to acquire knowledge from his or her leader.”

“Most people go through life as failures because they habitually wait for the “time to be right” to start doing something worthwhile.”

“Before you even start to negotiate for a readjustment of your salary in your present position or seek employment elsewhere, be sure that you are worth more than you receive.”

“Many people mistake their wants for their just dues.”

“Genuine wisdom is usually conspicuous through modesty and silence.”

“Riches do not respond to wishes. They respond only to definite plans, backed by definite desires, through constant persistence.”

“When a group of individual brains are coordinated and function in harmony, the increased energy created through that alliance becomes available to every individual brain in the group.”

Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill: A Timeless Blueprint for Wealth and Mindset Mastery

First published in 1937, “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill has become a foundational text in the world of personal development and wealth creation. I will give you the perspevtive of a retired financial planner in rviewing and summarizing Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill ..

Think and Grow Rich: The Landmark Bestseller Now Revised and Updated for the 21st Century (Think and Grow Rich Series)

This book is no ordinary self-help manual – it’s a distillation of over 20 years of research into the mindsets and habits of some of the most prosperous individuals in history.

For aspiring entrepreneurs, self-improvement enthusiasts, and those seeking strategies to unlock their full potential, “Think and Grow Rich” offers a powerful framework to transform one’s relationship with wealth, success, and the psychology of achievement.

The Power of Mindset: Summary of Think and Grow Rich

As a retired financial planner with over three decades of experience, I can attest to the profound impact that one’s mindset can have on their financial trajectory.

In my years advising clients, I witnessed firsthand how deeply ingrained belief systems could either propel or hinder wealth creation.

Observations from a Retired Financial Planner

Hill’s emphasis on cultivating a prosperity mindset through desire, faith, and autosuggestion resonates profoundly with the patterns I observed in my most successful clients.

Those who approached wealth-building with a scarcity mentality – perpetually fearing loss and lacking self-belief – often struggled to break through self-imposed limitations.

In contrast, individuals who embodied Hill’s principles of unwavering desire and affirmative visualization consistently manifested remarkable financial growth.

This aligns with Hill’s assertion that the starting point of all achievement is a burning desire – a definitive purpose fueled by passion and unwavering resolve.

Think And Grow Rich Review: Key Principles and Takeaways

  • Autosuggestion and the Mind A central tenet of “Think and Grow Rich” is mastering the art of autosuggestion – the ability to program one’s mind through conscious, sustained affirmation of goals and beliefs. Hill teaches readers to leverage the subconscious mind as a powerful ally in attracting desired outcomes. As a financial planner, I found this concept highly relevant, as it speaks to the importance of cultivating an unwavering belief in one’s ability to manifest their desired outcomes.
  • The Mastermind Principle Another cornerstone is the concept of the “Mastermind” – the coordinated alliance of individuals working in perfect harmony towards a common definite purpose. Hill asserts that tapping into the collective intelligence and resources of like-minded people can exponentially increase chances of success.

As a financial advisor, I recognized the immense value of surrounding oneself with a network of knowledgeable, like-minded individuals. Too often, I encountered clients who attempted to navigate the complex world of finance alone, falling prey to costly mistakes or missing out on lucrative opportunities due to a lack of collective wisdom.

Hill’s advocacy for leveraging the power of a Mastermind group aligns with the collaborative approach I found most conducive to sustained financial success.

  • Persistence and Resilience Arguably one of the most profound lessons from “Think and Grow Rich” is the value of persistence – the unwavering pursuit of one’s goals despite inevitable obstacles and failures. Hill emphasizes that fortitude, adaptability, and an unrelenting commitment to growth are vital ingredients of any worthwhile success story.

In the world of finance, setbacks and market fluctuations are inevitable – the true measure of success lies in one’s ability to adapt, learn, and persevere in the face of adversity.

I’ve witnessed countless individuals with immense potential falter and abandon their financial goals at the first sign of struggle. Hill’s teachings underscore the importance of cultivating an unwavering commitment to one’s objectives, even when confronted with obstacles that may initially seem insurmountable.

Relevance and Adaptability

While some of the examples and terminologies used in “Think and Grow Rich” may feel dated to the modern reader, the core principles outlined by Hill are timeless and readily applicable across industries and personal aspirations.

A number of successful entrepreneurs, leaders, and high achievers have cited this book as a formative influence, testifying to the universality of Hill’s teachings on mindset, self-belief, and the psychology of wealth-building.

As a financial planner, I firmly believe that the principles outlined by Hill are not only timeless but perhaps even more relevant in today’s rapidly evolving financial landscape.

In an age where information is abundant but wisdom is scarce, Hill’s work serves as a beacon, guiding individuals towards the foundational mindset required to navigate the complexities of modern wealth creation and management.

Avatar of person using AI

Hill started his career as a special investigator for a business magazine. An interview with American industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie motivated him to research successful people’s lives, habits, and attitudes.

After studying the lives of five hundred self-made millionaires, he developed a Law of Success philosophy that laid out thirteen steps to achieving wealth (emotional, spiritual, and financial).

The Think and Grow Rich summary’s core idea is that if you can control your mind, you can control your destiny. Every chapter is packed with insights that change how you think about money, people, psychology, and the self, regardless of your profession and business.

Hill underlines that although every human understands the purpose of money, only wishing will not bring riches. One needs a strong desire to acquire wealth.

Moreover, it isn’t enough to gather knowledge, whether that’s general knowledge picked up at school or specialized expertise in a particular skill. It’s important to apply that knowledge to the right situations to benefit.

The book further delves into how willpower is a crucial component of the journey to success. Obstacles are bound to arise—successful people know how to move past those and keep up their efforts.

Hill also underlines the importance of choosing a life partner who truly supports your desires and the pursuit of them.

Think and Grow Rich’s lessons have influenced and inspired thousands of successes since its launch and the old concepts continue to be widely popular today, especially among finance professionals.

Key Takeaways From Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

Here are some of the timeless pearls of wisdom this book offers:

In many ways, your subconscious mind is where the fate of your goals is determined. You can form positive new beliefs and approaches by unlocking your subconscious, and that’s where auto-suggestion comes in.

It involves talking to yourself and nudging yourself to focus your thoughts on what you wish to achieve. This can help you develop self-belief and do what is necessary to make your desire come true, whether financial or otherwise.

If you want to achieve something, you need a singular, burning desire to accomplish it and a concrete plan for how you will do it. You must set financial KPIs to measure your progress.

Don’t dilute your focus with multiple purposes and don’t consider temporary defeat as negative consequences—rather, it implies something is missing from your plan. Most people lack a sound strategy to accumulate a fortune.

Here are five practical steps to get started:

  • Fix your mind on the exact goal you want to achieve; make it specific and measurable
  • Determine what you intend to give in return for what you desire
  • Set a definitive date or time limit for achieving that goal
  • Create a definitive plan and put it into action immediately
  • Repeat the statement aloud twice a day to reinforce your belief

Remember, your dream might take several years to materialize, so you must honestly and sincerely want what you’re working towards. Only then can you keep at it. Keep negative emotions at bay.

In the book, Hill talks about how the human brain can pick up “vibrations of thought” from other brains through the ether, similar to how radio broadcasting works. He talks about how to use emotions to improve your mind’s ability to receive the right vibrations.

Who you are depends on who you surround yourself with. Having a reliable mastermind group helps you stay accountable, be cheered on by like-minded people, and have the unique opportunity to tap into their skills and perspectives.

Essentially, supplement your skills with those of other like-minded individuals and acquire the specialized knowledge and self-confidence you need to achieve your goals.

Mastermind groups aren’t just to create mutual accountability. The members have various abilities and perspectives but a shared drive and definite purpose

We’re taught that stubbornness is a bad thing. However, according to Hill, the most successful people know how to make decisions they’re convinced by and then stick to them.

If you believe something will work, there’s no reason to change your mind just because someone said something negative or you ran into an obstacle. Believe in yourself and be persistent in pursuing your one goal or purpose. Keep your thought vibrations positive.

Failure, often, is the result of indecisiveness and procrastination. Hill says that if you seek real success, you must learn to trust your judgment, keep your counsel, and make concrete decisions for your growth.

The goal is not to allow yourself to be swayed by anyone (except for valuable inputs from your mastermind group).

Napoleon Hill firmly believed that having the right mindset can help you achieve anything you want to achieve.

This is vital to overcoming the barriers the conscious mind often imposes in the form of preconceived notions, assumptions, or limiting beliefs around goal-setting.

By repeatedly thinking the right thoughts and visualizing the dream that you’re working towards, you can overcome emotions like fear and lack of conviction and attract the vibrations you need to build wealth and success.

Use goal-setting templates to prioritize tasks, identify milestones, and ensure you are on the right track to achieve your goals.

There are several memorable lines in the book. Here are some of our personal favorites from the Think and Grow Rich summary:

If you do not see great riches in your creative imagination, you will never see them in your bank balance.

The quote highlights the unique ability of humans to create and action new ideas with the power of their imagination.

According to Hill, there are two types of imagination:

  • One is synthetic imagination, which makes new combinations out of previously existing ideas and concepts
  • The other is creative imagination, which picks up vibrations from the ether and connects with what Hill calls ‘Infinite Intelligence’, to create new ideas and concepts

Both types of imagination are vital for achieving your deepest desires.

There is one quality which one must possess to win, and that is definiteness of purpose, the knowledge of what one wants, and a burning desire to possess it.
Desire is the starting point of all achievements. You must have an all-consuming obsession with becoming wealthy, and a firm conviction that you can get rich with a clear plan of action. Faith is the only known antidote for failure.

Visualize and believe in achieving what you desire. Do it with faith, which’ll help you turn your dreams into their physical or monetary equivalent. Make regular affirmations or suggestions to your subconscious mind to strengthen your belief.

Riches do not respond to wishes. They respond to definite plans, backed by definite desires, through constant persistence.

An essential point in the Think and Grow Rich summary is that the most successful people have in common the ability to quickly reach decisions without paying attention to the negative influences of others around them. This quote emphasizes taking action.

There are no limitations to the mind except those we acknowledge.

Your subconscious mind is the connecting link between the finite human mind and the infinite intelligence of the universal mind. By unlocking its power, you can receive the insights you need to transform your dreams into reality. If you can imagine it, you can achieve it.

As this Think and Grow Rich summary shows, you can’t get far in business finance without a strategy. Whether making cash flow projections, managing project budgets , managing employee compensation, or doing cost analysis, you can only make headway with an action plan.

Hill’s philosophy goes beyond mere financial advice; it stresses the power of goal-setting and perseverance to achieve wealth. The advice offered in the book can help finance teams manage resources effectively and identify and capitalize on new opportunities.

Raise taxes on the rich or cut them? Harris and Trump differ on how to boost the US economy

Vice President Kamala Harris used a New Hampshire campaign stop to propose an expansion of tax incentives for small businesses, a plan that may soften her previous calls for wealthy Americans and large corporations to pay higher taxes.

This combination photo shows Republican presidential nominee former President Donald Trump at an event, Aug. 15, 2024, in Bedminster, N.J., left, and Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris at a campaign event in Raleigh, N.C., Aug. 16, 2024. (AP Photo)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump is betting that Americans crave trillions of dollars in tax cuts — and that growth will be so fantastic that it’s not worth worrying about budget deficits.

In short, he’s hoping that most economic analyses of his ideas are dead wrong.

Vice President Kamala Harris believes that big corporations and the ultra-wealthy should pay more in taxes — and wants to use those revenues to help spur the construction of 3 million homes and offer tax breaks for parents.

She’s hoping to deliver on the types of policies that President Joe Biden has been unable to secure in a lasting way.

The two presidential nominees are using the week before their debate to sharpen their economic messages about who could do more for the middle class. Harris will discuss her policy plans Wednesday in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, while Trump will address the Economic Club of New York on Thursday.

The economy has historically been a dominant issue in presidential elections. In an August survey by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs, Trump did narrowly better on the economy with 45% saying he would handle it better and 38% saying Harris would.

Image

There are high stakes in this showdown because the winner of November’s election could rewrite much of the federal tax code next year, when parts of Trump’s 2017 tax cuts are set to expire.

A look at the candidates’ proposals:

DIFFERENT PITCHES TO THE MIDDLE-CLASS

Trump and Harris have different ways of trying to help the middle class.

The former Republican president sees tax cuts for businesses and the wealthy as essential for promoting more investment, with those who’ve previously advised him saying average growth would top 3%. Mind you, overall economic growth never hit 3% a year when Trump was president. But between 2018 and 2019, the median household income jumped by $5,220 to an inflation-adjusted $78,250, according to the Census Bureau.

“What I tell people all the time: The Trump policies were designed to lift middle-class wages, re-onshore and re-industrialize,” said Joseph LaVorgna, an economist who worked in the Trump White House. “The intention is to get wages higher.”

By contrast, Harris wants to upgrade the middle-class promise of home ownership and ease the high costs of parenthood. She also wants tax breaks for entrepreneurs . It’s a message meant to show that Harris can address the problem of prices as people are still recovering from inflation spiking to a four-decade high in 2022.

First-time homebuyers could get $25,000 in down payment assistance that would be coupled with broader policies to encourage the construction of 3 million additional homes in four years. New parents could get a $6,000 tax credit and an expanded child tax credit.

“When working- and middle-class Americans have the opportunity to earn more, to build a business, to buy a home, to climb the economic ladder, it strengthens our economy and helps us grow,” said Brian Nelson, a Harris adviser.

NO TAXES ON TIPS, SOCIAL SECURITY

Trump has proposed no taxes on tips paid to workers or Social Security income. Harris has embraced the idea of not taxing workers’ tips.

As Ernie Tedeschi at the Yale Budget Lab noted, excluding tips from taxes is unlikely to provide much of an economic boost even if some individuals feel better off. He noted that just 2.5% of workers receive tips and that many don’t earn enough money to owe income taxes to the federal government.

Trump would also exclude Social Security payments from taxation, which could cost $1.2 trillion over 10 years. The risk is those taxes help fund Social Security. Without those revenues, the program would be unable to pay full benefits starting in 2033, or two years earlier than currently forecast, according to an analysis by Brendan Duke, senior director of economic policy at the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank.

As much as Trump talks about tax cuts, he would also want to engage in a massive tax hike by charging higher tariffs on imports in order to grow jobs.

How much would the tariff be? No one really knows. Trump has proposed a broad tariff of 10%, but at an August event in North Carolina suggested it could be as high as 20%. Against Chinese products, he would like a tax of somewhere between 60% to 100%.

The Republican insists his tariffs wouldn’t jack up inflation, but the whole goal of the tax is to make imports more expensive so that more manufacturing occurs domestically. The Harris campaign says the middle class would face a higher tax burden, with the 20% tariff applied broadly costing a typical household $4,000 annually.

The Trump campaign did not answer questions about how the tariffs would work. If the goal is to bring jobs back from overseas, the tariffs would presumably be phased in over time so that manufacturing jobs could return to the U.S. But if the goal is to raise revenues, then they would be implemented immediately.

TRUMP’S NOT AFRAID OF DEBT

It’s not clear that Trump could pay for his ambitious tax cuts.

He wants to extend the expiring provisions of his 2017 tax overhaul. He’s floated the idea of chopping the 21% corporate tax rate to 15%, in addition to no taxes on tips and Social Security income. The estimated price is close to $6 trillion, but it could be higher. And the Congressional Budget Office already estimates $22 trillion in deficits over the next decade without the tax overhaul being extended.

Growth would not appear to cover the price tag. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget surveyed economic analyses and found that Trump extending his tax cuts would have roughly no impact on overall growth over 10 years because of the additional debt.

“The overall agenda doesn’t seem to be all that pro-growth,” said Marc Goldwein, senior vice president and senior policy director for the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.

HARRIS IS MORE CAUTIOUS WITH DEFICITS

According to the Harris campaign, all her spending plans would be funded. Officials with her campaign have suggested that her sources of revenue would largely mirror Biden’s 2025 budget proposal.

Still, the Penn Wharton Budget Model estimates that her policies would add $2.3 trillion in spending. It forecasts that her plan to increase the corporate tax rate to 28% would produce $1.1 trillion in tax revenues. But the group did not include other proposals such as taxing the unrealized income gains of people worth $100 million or more, as there are not enough details to produce an accurate number. Nor did it include other revenue increases.

The Penn Wharton Budget Model suggests that the Harris plans would hurt growth more than Trump’s would through 2034, though it excluded his proposed tariffs from the analysis.

The real difference of the plan is how tax burdens would change starting in 2026.

Under Trump’s plans, someone in the top 0.1% of earners would after taxes get on average $376,910 more in income. The poorest 20% would get just $320 more.

Harris’ policies would reduce the average incomes of the top 0.1% by $167,225. But the bottom 20% get $2,355 more in income and benefits.

“Bigger picture: both Harris and Trump are causing the debt path to rise even faster than the fast pace under current law,” said Kent Smetters, the faculty director of the Penn Wharton Budget Model.
