Kristin Sainani (née Cobb) is an associate professor at Stanford University and also a health and science writer. After receiving an MS in statistics and a PhD in epidemiology from Stanford University, she studied science writing at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She has taught statistics and writing at Stanford for more than a decade and has received several Excellence in Teaching Awards from the graduate program in epidemiology. Dr. Sainani writes about science and health for a range of audiences. She authored the health column Body News for Allure magazine for a decade. She is also the statistical editor for the journal Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation; and she authors a statistics column, Statistically Speaking, for this journal.

Three-Phases

Emerging Innovators Research Program - Progression/Steps for High School Students

Prerequisite-Phase 1: Analytical Thinking and Blog Writing Course

  • Format: Online – Asynchronous
  • Time Required: 15 to 20 hours
  • Course Access: 1 month
  • Graded: Yes      Cost: $200
  • Description: This course helps develop your analytical thinking skills and guides you through the process to conduct an investigation on any topic of your interest and the writing process to help you effectively communicate your findings and analysis through a meticulously crafted blog post. This on-demand asynchronous course is divided into six units, and each unit focuses on building specific thinking skills, followed by practice assignments for each unit. The assignments will be manually graded by an instructor and feedback will be given to the student.

Phase 2: Emerging Innovators Research Coursework

  • Time Required: 60 hours
  • Course Access: 3 months
  • Graded: Yes      Cost: $499
  • Description : The Emerging Innovators Research Coursework is a unique interdisciplinary course that aims to educate and foster innovation in students. As Deba Dutta, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs and diversity at Purdue University, stated, "Innovation cannot be taught like math, writing, or even entrepreneurship. But it can be inculcated with the right skills, experiences, and environments." The program is designed to teach students new methodologies to make new scientific discoveries and convert those discoveries into applied science. Students also learn industry best practices for designing a product/solution to a real-world problem, exposing them to many different industry verticals and the opportunities. The program also offers activities that encourage disruptive thinking and develops critical skills in an interdisciplinary setting.

PHASE-3: Students are challenged to apply the new methodologies they have learned in the prior phase, make new discoveries, and generate new ideas. They will then abstract scientific and design strategies from their discoveries and use that knowledge to design a product or solution to a real-world problem. The program encourages disruptive thinking, giving students the opportunity to have their own "Eureka" moment.

Students can choose either the Independent Research Track or  the Capstone Project Track.

The full transformative experience happens only when you apply the new concepts to solve real-world problems. Though it is an intense brain exercise, it is the most fulfilling and empowering experience.

Phase 3: Independent Research Track

  • Description: Students are challenged to apply the new methodologies they have learned in the prior phase, make new discoveries, and generate new ideas. They will then abstract scientific and design strategies from their discoveries and use that knowledge to design a product or solution to a real-world problem. The program encourages disruptive thinking, giving students the opportunity to have their own "Eureka" moment. Students are guided at every step of the way to ensure their research and scientific writing is of college-level quality. The research article is prepared for submission and review for publication following all necessary requirements.

Phase 3: Capstone Project Track

  • Description: Students are challenged to apply the new innovation methodologies they have learned in the prior phase to design a sustainable solution to a real-world problem (preferably from their local community). The program encourages disruptive thinking, giving students the opportunity to be the change-maker. Students are guided at every step of the way to ensure their project is of college-level quality.

Research Article / Capstone Project Publication:

Students are guided at every step of the way to ensure their research and scientific writing is of college-level quality and meets all publication guidelines. All submissions go through a strict review process for scientific accuracy, quality, originality, and must address a real-world problem. There are two categories of publications by the Emerging Innovators Online Science Journal . 

  • Individual author research articles with novel ideas (Full Research Paper)
  • Group/Individual capstone projects that demonstrate innovative sustainable solutions (presentation video with a 2 to 4-page narrative).

It is noteworthy that only novel insights/solutions are published in this journal. Getting published in this journal clearly demonstrates that the research is unique and follows the scientific process for proposing novel insights. This will provide students with a valuable research/project publication to include in their resumes and in their college applications.

The Research Ambassador Program encourages students who have successfully completed the research publication to continue their passion by presenting their research at scientific conferences and leading research and innovation clubs at schools. This helps to promote research and innovation among their peers and the broader community.

Being a Research Ambassador has many benefits. One of the key benefits is the opportunity to enhance your communication and leadership skills by presenting your research at scientific conferences and promoting research and innovation activities among your peers and the broader community, for example through leading research and innovation clubs at schools. Additionally, the program offers volunteer hours for your efforts to promote scientific research and investigation, which can be a valuable addition to your college applications. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to inspire others by sharing your story of how you took your research skills to the next level and pursued higher opportunities. You will also receive a letter of recommendation which will be submitted directly to the college application. Overall, being a Research Ambassador is a great way to gain valuable skills, experience, and recognition for your hard work and dedication to science research.

Children’s Innovation Center supports diversity, equity and inclusion in science and engineering education and research.

This program offers an advanced learning opportunity and introduces a new methodology that is being adopted by Industry Research Centers and is typically only available at elite universities at the Masters and PhD levels. However, through this program, it is made accessible to all high school students, college students, and adults.

The Emerging Innovators Research Program addresses community needs by fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, addressing real-world problems, developing future leaders, building a skilled workforce, and fostering collaboration between students, industry leaders, and community members. Through advanced coursework, mentoring, and research and innovation opportunities, the program aims to prepare students to be valuable assets to the community and create solutions to the challenges it faces.

Instructor and Mentor:

Shanti Balaraman is the co-founder and CEO of the Children's Innovation Center and serves as the main mentor for the Emerging Innovators Research Program. She is a leading researcher, innovator, and thought leader in the field of transformative education and disruptive thinking. Shanti has a proven track record of developing sustainable solutions and fostering the next generation of leaders and change-makers through her research and innovative approach to education. Additionally, she has a wealth of experience in the technology industry and her current role as President of the Stanford University Chapter of Sigma Xi - The Scientific Research Honor Society. She is dedicated to promoting research in science, and helping students build the skills needed to conduct scientific research and develop innovative solutions to solve real-world problems.

The Emerging Innovators online science journal is a new initiative that aims to address the decline of disruptive science by providing high school students with the opportunity to publish their own novel ideas and insights. The journal only publishes articles that address real-world problems and have the potential to benefit humanity and the planet. This is a unique opportunity for high school students to gain recognition for their innovative thinking and research, and to contribute to the scientific community. The journal is a response to the decline of disruptive science, which has been in decline for the past 60 years, and is a challenge faced by the scientific community. The Emerging Innovators online science journal aims to bring focus to the importance of novel insights in science and to recognize them as a separate category, distinct from articles that test existing paradigms.

Q: Why don't I see many publications on this journal?

A: The journal only publishes novel scientific insights and ideas, which are rare. The Children's Innovation Center has successfully taught students how to make new discoveries and apply a whole-system design thinking methodology to create sustainable and human-centric solutions to real-world problems.

Q: Is Emerging Innovators Journal being managed by Children’s Innovation Center?

A: No. However, Shanti Balaraman is one of the lead scientists involved in this initiative that is managed by a small team of scientists aspiring to reverse the decline in new scientific discoveries[ 1 ].

Pathways to Research Program (PReP)

PReP provides an opportunity for students from populations underrepresented in research to begin or advance their research career. Opportunities for travel funds to participate in national and international scientific meetings are awarded on a competitive basis.

The Pathways to Research Program provides undergraduate students with knowledge, skills, and experience in translational science and health equity research through a structured core curriculum including a mentored research project, weekly training seminars, small group discussions, and a final poster to present research findings at the annual University of Minnesota CTSI Translational Science Symposium & Poster Session held in September 2023.

The cornerstone of the research training program is the scholar’s participation in a research project under the direct supervision of a University of Minnesota faculty mentor. With input and oversight by the faculty mentor, scholars will work on a project related to the mentor’s ongoing research programs. 

CTSI PReP Program shares its application with the M-ASCEND: Advancing Science, Enhancing Diversity program . Students may be considered for one or both of the programs by selecting their program choice(s) in the application.

True taste of the full college experience while still being supported 

Our staff works diligently to allow our students to shape their own program experience while also providing enough structure that they feel supported throughout their time on campus. Students will have the opportunity to connect with student clubs, undergraduate admissions counselors, and Northeastern’s Cultural Centers, and campus resources. In addition, Accelerate Pre-College program activities, housing, and dining are all included in the cost of tuition. This inclusive program experience gives students even more freedom in choosing activities and meal options.

Unique and varied collegiate-style learning experiences

Accelerate Pre-College Programs are immersive, full- day experiences that go beyond the typical lecture hall. We keep our cohort sizes small to allow for personalized attention from our world-renowned faculty members. Our students and faculty have in-depth meaningful classroom discussions and are often joined by industry leaders as guest speakers. Students engage in project-based learning in world class facilities, giving them a hands-on experience similar to that of Northeastern undergraduate students.   

Diverse & passionate community  

Participating in Accelerate Pre-College Programs allows students to interact with motivated peers who each bring their own unique perspective to conversations both in and out of the classroom. Within each program cohort, students will work with peers who are equally as passionate about the subject matter. Outside of the academic space, students will meet the other cohorts through residential and social activities.

  • A Start in STEM: Elevate College Prep Utilizes Programming to Engage Young Learners

Stemming off of Illinois Institute of Technology’s Elevate program, the university has launched its one-of-a-kind Elevate College Prep , a pre-college and college prep program aimed at providing middle school and high school students with opportunities to learn and pursue STEM fields in a college setting.

ECP is designed to provide multifaceted academic and real-world experiences for young learners who are typically underrepresented in STEM professions. It offers several options for learning across various disciplines, offering multiple programs for curious minds to thrive. Through opportunities such as mentorship with Illinois Tech students, unique academic activities, and hands-on experiences, students are able to immerse themselves in a space that is accessible, supportive, and enriching—gaining the skills that they need to be college and career ready.

Illinois Tech Associate Director of Pre-College Access Scott Tillman manages the various programs within ECP and works to build relationships with middle and high schools in the Chicago area.

Since ECP’s inception, Tillman has seen an outpouring of support for the program from participating students and educators, as well as from Illinois Tech faculty members and students.

“We’re still building our relationships with schools, and I think that as we’ve been building relationships, it’s been extremely positive in that schools are able to imagine what a visit could look like outside of just a one-time occurrence,” says Tillman.

He says that providing pre-college and college prep programs earlier allows students ample time to discover what career they want to go into and where they can see themselves.

“The programs that are being built out of [ECP] serve as a canvas of sorts for students to be able to build an affinity toward either college, STEM, or Illinois Tech specifically while they’re in high school starting their freshman year,” Tillman says.

He adds, “There’s research that dictates that students will have already decided their path by the time they get to their senior year, so I think that by having programs that start earlier than that time frame, we start to help students build and expand their possibilities even more.”

Through ECP, middle school and high school students can take part in summer programs (residential, daytime, online, or for-credit courses), apprenticeships, dual-enrollment courses, the DevUp Scholars Program, SMASH Academy, or attend special events.

ECP’s summer programs provide students a chance to examine pressing issues facing our society, including sustainability, next-generation technology, and computing and security, in summer programs that also highlight some of the most dynamic and growing fields today such as game development and cybersecurity. The apprenticeships program is a partnership with After School Matters Chicago where students can receive paid opportunities while being mentored by an Illinois Tech faculty member in an area such as business or cybersecurity.

Students interested in jumpstarting their college-prep work can register for dual-enrollment in college-level courses, which are taught by Illinois Tech faculty online and in person. Dual-enrollment courses offer a new challenge for students and an exposure to degree options through the multiple tracks included in the program, including biology, business, computer science, economics, information technology, and mathematics. Beginning in fall 2023, high schools can partner with ECP to offer dual-enrollment college courses at their school. These courses provide students with a hybrid learning experience through online and in-person, asynchronous teaching by Illinois Tech faculty.

SMASH Academy is a three-year intensive program for high school students who are going into 10th grade and beyond. Students in the program live on campus for five weeks each summer of the program and participate in STEM-focused courses; during the academic year, they participate in monthly programming. This program is a partnership with SMASH, and is part of SMASH Illinois, a collaboration between Illinois Tech, Southern Illinois University, and the CPASS Foundation. The DevUp Scholars Program is a three-year interactive program that provides high school students, mainly from Chicago’s South Side, with STEM and entrepreneurship opportunities, mentorship from Illinois Tech students, and monthly academic and experiential learning activities. Admission to the DevUp programs requires students going into 10th grade to be nominated by a high school teacher, counselor, or administrator who they believe exhibits leadership and a curiosity for STEM.

Tillman has a deep appreciation for the many partnerships and relationships that support all of the programs included in ECP. He emphasizes that ECP needs to continue to uplift communities, which will, in turn, uplift students and future generations of Illinois Tech alumni.

“We can’t exist as a silo or a space that is its own thing,” Tillman says. “We have to bear witness to the community, we have to connect with the community, and we have to build opportunities for students in and outside of the community to see themselves at Illinois Tech.”

One approach is to study it in college. Yes, there are now colleges and universities that offer degree programs that award innovation majors.

Here are 10 colleges where you can find innovation degrees and majors.

1. University of Central Arkansas

The Innovation and Entrepreneurship major at the University of Central Arkansas gives students the skills needed to start their own businesses, with a special emphasis on developing innovative products and services. The program also encourages networking through internships, study abroad opportunities in countries such as China, Panama, and Italy, and research projects. The faculty has extensive industry and academic experience, with many instructors owning their own businesses or holding positions as vice presidents for major companies. Topics covered in courses include new venture creation, small business finance, marketing, and product development.

2. University of San Francisco

The University of San Francisco, voted one of the top 20 entrepreneurial colleges by Forbes, has a wide range of courses and programs dedicated to business, including a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Entrepreneurship and Innovation , and an MBA program in Entrepreneurship and Innovation. In these programs, students develop skills in communication, entrepreneurial planning, design, and other areas important to innovative business practices.

3. Bucknell University

The Markets, Innovation, and Design B.S. degree at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, teaches students the relationship between creative design, brand management, market research, public taste, and other areas crucial to creating successful products. The emphasis is on learning how to predict consumers' needs and predict future trends. Through analysis and using both quantitative and qualitative techniques, students learn to take basic ideas and turn them into practical business innovations and products. Opportunities within this program include internships, studying abroad, and participation in the Student Managed Investment Fund, which gives students the opportunity to run a small investment company.

4. University of Colorado

The University of Colorado in Colorado Springs offers a trademarked Bachelor of Innovation degree. This is an interdisciplinary program where students can take classes in a variety of subjects, in areas ranging from the sciences to education to the arts. Students then get to collaborate, taking what they've learned from different disciplines and putting it all together in creative ways. Besides stimulating innovation, this approach gives students practice in working together and collaborating on projects.

5. George Mason University

George Mason University in Virginia offers a bachelor of arts degree in Social Innovation and Enterprise as a concentration within their Integrative Studies program. The focus of this program is to help students develop environmentally sustainable and socially responsible solutions in the business. They encourage students to supplement their studies with public service, internships, and independent research. Some students enter this program as part of a sped-up master's degree in areas such as Public Policy and Global Affairs.

6. Champlain College

The Management and Innovation major at Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont, teaches students how to develop solutions that have social, environmental, and economic benefits. This program provides small class sizes to emphasize discussions and individual attention. The school's Sarah Ramsey Innovation Lab gives students a place to collaborate with peers and faculty on projects. To help foster practical skills, Champlain College also provides many internship opportunities in the Burlington area.

7. University of Michigan

While most innovation degrees are targeting entrepreneurs or those who want to work in business, the University of Michigan offers a program for educators who want to foster innovation in education. The Leading Educational Innovation and Improvement master's program guides teachers to improve classrooms and encourage creativity in their students. This is a micro master's degree that offers courses such as Designing and Leading Learning Systems, Improvement Science in Education, and Leading Educational Innovation and Improvement Capstone. This is an innovation major for teachers who want to encourage creativity and innovation in the next generation .

8. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

The Design, Innovation, and Society B.S. degree at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, is an interdisciplinary program that seeks to combine solutions from the fields of design , engineering, and the social sciences. Students get hands-on experience addressing real-world problems. This program, part of the school's Science and Technology Studies department, lets students take classes in many diverse fields such as graphic design, computer science, engineering, and management to get a broad view. Many graduates earn master's degrees in fields such as management and industrial design.

9. University of Pennsylvania

Management-Entrepreneurship and Innovation is a concentration offered at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania that prepares students to start their own businesses, work in management, or join startups. Courses include Negotiations, Social Entrepreneurship, Entrepreneurial Venture Initiation, and Idea Generation & the Systematic Approach for Creativity. Students also take courses in economics, communication, leadership, and teamwork. Wharton is one of the nation's leading business schools and this program provides you with skills that are widely sought by today's businesses.

10. Clarkson University

Innovation and Entrepreneurship is one of the B.S. degrees offered by Clarkson University, an independent, technology-oriented university in Potsdam, New York. It ranked this program as one of the top entrepreneurship degrees by Princeton Review in 2013. Besides taking courses in a variety of disciplines, students develop practical skills by participating in research projects, community outreach, and working with faculty on joint projects. Clarkson even provides an innovative way for students to pay for their education through the Young Entrepreneurs and Innovators Award Program, where companies buy equity in students' businesses.

How to Choose a College Prep Program

Find the right pre-college program to help you boost your college application, explore college life, and have fun too.

For today’s high school students, admission to college and entry into the workforce is increasingly competitive. Attending a pre-college program can be an excellent way to help your application stand out. But choosing the right college prep program—and one that will offer the benefits you want—can be a challenge.

Savvy students are exploring opportunities earlier in life, with many seeking out internships, college prep programs, and other enrichment opportunities while still in secondary school.

If you’re a high school student, such opportunities can help you:

  • Explore potential academic and career fields.
  • Enhance your college application.
  • Gain real-world insights that can help you succeed in college.
  • Build a network of contacts for future opportunities.

Over the past decade, college prep programs have become one of the most popular types of enrichment programs for college-bound high school students. And today, there are literally thousands of programs to choose from. So how do you choose which college prep program is right for you?

To guide your search, we’ve compiled a list of criteria you should consider when thinking about pre-college opportunities.

What Is a Pre-College Program?

Also called pre-college, a college prep program is a program offered by colleges and universities geared toward secondary school students.

A college prep program is usually an on-campus experience where you can explore academic interests, meet faculty or professionals, experience college life first hand, and familiarize yourself with the concepts of college. However, many programs are also now offered online.

Some programs are highly specialized. Ideal for students who believe they know where they’d like to focus in college, these programs specifically offer courses and projects tailored around a particular field. There are programs focused on STEM, the arts, theater, journalism, athletics, sustainability, and social justice, to name just a few.

For students wanting to explore potential majors, you may want to choose a college prep program that provides a broad range of courses in a variety of academic areas.

What to Consider When Choosing a Program?

Given the plethora of pre-college programs, choosing the right one for you can be a challenge.

It is important to be clear about your goals, because the right program for you will be the program that meets those goals. It will take some research on your end to narrow down your choices. Here are a few things to consider:

  • Admission requirements. Some programs are open to anyone who is interested, while others have strict admission criteria. If you want a rigorous academic program, you may want to consider a more selective program. It is important to review the admission requirements in advance, as well as any application deadlines.
  • Specialization. Do you want to delve deeply into one particular subject or try out a variety of potential majors? Is a traditional in-classroom experience more important, or are you seeking a more hands-on approach?
  • Credit or non-credit. Does the program enable you to earn college credit that you may be able to apply toward prerequisites or a future major? While college prep may offer this opportunity, other programs allow you to explore academic areas of interest without worrying about earning credit.
  • Location. Your choice of program may depend on whether you want to travel or stick close to home, or even stay fully online. Students who want to explore a specific college campus as a potential application option may want to explore whether that campus offers a summer program.
  • Time commitment. College prep programs range from one week to the entire summer. How much of your summer you want to devote to a pre-college experience is really up to you and your family.
  • Cost. It is important to research and fully understand the cost of every program you research, including any fees, room and board, required materials, and travel. As with duration, cost can vary widely depending on a variety of factors, so you will need to do your homework.

What is “the best” pre-college program? The short answer is whatever checks all the above boxes for you. It’s not always the prestige of a school that matters, but what you take away from it. For example, a prestigious program might not be worth it if it will stretch finances or cause you to fall behind on other responsibilities.

What About Online Courses?

The cornerstone of any college prep program is the opportunity to experience academics at the college level. But a pre-college program is not the only way to achieve that experience.

If the academic experience is your only goal, you may want to consider taking one or more online college courses instead of attending a full-scale summer program. Many community colleges and even some universities allow high school students to take online classes over the summer.

And if finances are an issue, there are a plethora of free online courses in many areas of study, making it increasingly easy for you to try before you buy. By taking free online courses, you can easily sample departments and majors before you step onto a college campus.

And as with paid online courses, there are plenty of choices when it comes to free offerings as well. Harvard offers free course content via edX . Khan Academy and Coursera are other popular options.

What If Pre-College Programs Aren’t For Me?

Attending a college prep course is not the only way to enhance your college application. And the truth is, it may not be the right choice for everyone.

There are many different types of summer activities that can make your college application stand out.

In other words, the key to making your college application unique is to highlight your unique story. For some students, a summer job or service project will showcase their strengths. For other students, a college prep program can provide the opportunity for exploration and academic achievement.

Whatever choice is right for you, smart planning and a little creativity can help you map out a successful, rewarding future.

Cyber Halo Innovation Research Program

Growing the space cybersecurity workforce.

The Cyber Halo Innovation Research Program, or CHIRP, is a collaboration between Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and U.S. Space Force's Space Systems Command. The program provides college students a two-year pathway to a cybersecurity career focused on space-based technologies.

The world is changing. Are you ready?

Cybercrime is a growing threat to space-based technologies, such as satellites and global positioning systems. To grow the cybersecurity workforce needed to help protect these important space systems, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has teamed up with U.S. Space Force’s Space Systems Command (SSC) to create the Cyber Halo Innovation Research Program—or CHIRP.

CHIRP is a college-to-career program that brings together government, industry, and colleges and universities to provide students with a direct two-year pathway to a cybersecurity career at SSC or their industry partners. California State University, San Bernardino is the first higher education institution to join the effort.

The student experience

Students who participate in the career-preparation program receive two years of intensive training designed to equip them for jobs protecting the nation’s vital space-based technologies from cyber threats.

CHIRP participants:

  • Work on cybersecurity-related research and development problems using tools and   methods that are directly applicable to SSC;
  • Participate in a cybersecurity internship at SSC, PNNL, or other industry partners;
  • Complete a one-week professional development experience at PNNL

The training will open pathways for futures in information technology, computer science, intelligence (national security), network security, cyber analysis, incident response, cyber policy, data architecture, continuity of operations, data analytics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, secure software development, and other cybersecurity-related fields.

Key Program Dates & Information

CHIRP applications open in January. Those who are selected will participate in the Summer Institute at PNNL Richland campus from May 20 to May 24, 2024. Visit PNNL’s  careers  page to learn more and view the current CHIRP postings, application requirements, and benefits.

Program Eligibility

Accepted students will begin the program during the summer before their junior year and will commit to a full two years of participation. To meet and maintain eligibility, students must:

  • Maintain a 3.0 GPA in their major;
  • Meet each semester with the CHIRP program manager or with an assigned advisor; and
  • Participate in career, curriculum, and experience pathways and required CHIRP events, including the Summer Institute, research experiences, and a summer internship.

Academic and industry partners

CHIRP is a collaboration between PNNL, SSC, and selected minority-serving institutions and industry partners that offers underserved and underrepresented populations of students access to a unique, two-year college-to-career program opportunity.

Dartmouth Postbac Research Education Program (Dartmouth PREP)

Dartmouth PREP accepts up to 4 scholars into the program, which starts July 1 of each year. During the first two weeks of the program, Dartmouth PREP directors will help students match with a faculty mentor whose lab is doing research of interest to them. Dartmouth PREP offers a broad range of research opportunities across three different graduate program affiliations: Molecular & Cellular Biology (MCB), Integrative Neuroscience (IND), and Quantitative Biomedical Sciences (QBS). More than 41 Dartmouth faculty members are available to mentor Dartmouth PREP scholars for their 1-year research experience and provide guidance on the graduate school application process.

Maya gobert, director of innovation, scholar launch.

Maya Gobert is our Director of Student Innovation. Maya attended Cornell University on a full expenses paid scholarship where she double majored in Economics and Political Science and graduated with top honors. Maya has worked across three continents and industries - finance, marketing and educational consulting. Maya has led a team of consultants and worked personally with students across the world (more than 14 countries and counting!), mentoring them in candidacy building and extracurricular pursuits. Her students have gained admission into all the Ivy League colleges and many other Top 20 US universities.

Avi-Yona Israel

Avi-Yona Israel, Instructor, Leadership & Innovation Lab

Avi is certified in management from the Wharton School. Her experience spans a wide range of domains from the humanities to business and marketing to the entertainment industry. She excels at understanding students’ entrepreneurial efforts in their local context, ensuring careful consideration of available resources and circumstances. Avi attended Colgate University and UPenn. During her time in Penn, she taught and tutored high school students for over 200 hours and was the recipient of an Exceptional Pro Bono Service Award. After UPenn, she was a teaching assistant, research assistant, and adjunct professor at American University.

Raised $40,000 to design, build, and launch fitness app. This student hired a team, worked with graphic designers, and launched a successful fundraising campaign.

100% Green Coffee Sleeve Business

Developed a new coffee cup sleeve made exclusively from recyclable and plantable materials (it even had seeds!). With new marketing and business development skills, he built a website and partnered with local coffee shops.

Young Artist Exhibition & Auction

Worked with artists from 15 high schools across the country to curate 2 online art exhibits. This student auctioned 100+ art pieces and raised proceeds to donate to disease relief.

Peer Counseling Program

Created peer counseling platform to help students deal with stress and mental health issues. This student hired 9 peers, officially registered his company, and launched a website.

Non-Profit Providing Free Computer Science Learning

Improved existing non-profit — developing curriculum, recruitment, and marketing techniques to expand his organization’s reach. Now, this student leads a network of peer instructors who teach free classes to a growing group of young CS learners.

The Integrated Research and Innovation center is UI’s world-class facility for interdisciplinary research and discovery. Located in the heart of campus, it is home to projects that transcend traditional academic boundaries, allowing researchers to take on key questions in new ways.

As the university’s premier research facility, the IRIC offers space for teams of faculty researchers, as well as their undergraduate and graduate students who are gaining hands-on experience. When the IRIC opened in January 2017, more than 20 teams had secured space in the building, representing every UI college.

The IRIC Facility Committee reviews applications for space and helps determine the location and length of projects. Teams will rotate in and out of the IRIC based on the lifespan of their project: Short-term projects may only use space for a few months, while other projects could spend years establishing and expanding their work.

The IRIC features flexible laboratories, office and collaboration spaces that can be customized to fit the needs of their occupants. The building also includes core research facilities available to researchers across campus, as well as outside partnership; a state-of-the-art visualization laboratory; indoor and outdoor auditoriums; and space for events.

The IRIC stands as evidence of the university’s commitment to interdisciplinary research that makes a difference to our students, our state and our world.
