How to write a Great UPSC Essay for the IAS Mains?

UPSC Essay is the first Paper you will write

The IAS Mains Exam usually starts with the Essay paper in the first session. So, Essay is effectively the first paper you handle in the Mains. Consequently, it may lead to some stress on the morning of the exam for beginners. Don’t worry, though. You will soon get used to the rigour of attempting 3 hour papers.

Change in Pattern : 2 UPSC Essays in 3 Hours

An important change brought out by the UPSC from 2014 onward is to ask candidates to write two UPSC essays in 3 hours rather than write a single essay as was the case before. This calls for time management. Equal time should be spent on both the topics. It should not be the case that you spend two and a half hours for writing the first essay and scribble something down for the second one.

This change in pattern from asking a single question to two questions is a good one. Previously the range of marks in the essay varied hugely. Say, from 40 marks to 160 marks out of the total of 250. This year the essay scores seem to have stabilised and the huge variation has reduced. This reduces the luck factor too. If an examiner holds a contrarian view to your first essay and is inclined to award you lesser marks, the second essay on a different topic may appear better to her and so the overall marks do not slide down too much.

A key thing to keep in mind while writing an essay in the Mains exam is that UPSC is not testing your skill as an essayist. They are trying to test whether you will make a good administrator by reading your essay. This can be shown by generally adopting an optimistic view on major issues and by taking an ethical stand. So it does not matter if you do not have a rich vocabulary and a great command over English. You can still get a lot of marks in the Essay paper if you follow some of the tips below.

Points to Remember while writing the UPSC Essay paper:

1. A Great Introduction 2. A Great Conclusion 3. Usage of day-to-day examples 4. Usage of personal anecdotes 5. Quoting famous personalities 6. Small paragraphs 7. A neat handwriting 8. Usage of Sub-Sections 9. Usage of Current Affairs

If you manage to grab the reader’s attention in the introduction. half the job is done. When an examiner is correcting thousands of copies if your introduction stands out (in a good way that is), her job becomes easier as she will now look favorably through the rest of the answer paper.

How to grab the reader’s attention in the introduction?

You can present:

– An interesting fact – A piece of knowledge that is surprising – A very intriguing quote – A short personal anecdote – Provoke the reader through a question – State a paradoxical situation

Most of the times, the examiner reads the introduction and the conclusion fully, but simply skims through the body of the essay. It is not a disadvantage. You just have to use this in your favour.

And how to have a great conclusion?

If you just restate the ideas which you have already mentioned in the body of our essay, the conclusion may feel flat. A memorable and lasting impression should be left on the reader. Hopefully, we should write something that stays on in the reader’s mind long after she has finished correcting your essay. A graceful exit is required. For this you can:

– Try to create a powerful image in the mind of the reader – End with a thought-provoking quotation – Talk about what action can be done – End on an interesting twist of logic

You can quote nationalist leaders of India like Tagore, Gandhi, Nehru, Ambedakar and the like depending on your personal preferences. But the quote should be in keeping with the theme of the essay. And not something you have twisted somehow into the context of the essay. Also, the exact words of the original quote must be written. And not some reproduction in your own words. It leads to you losing credibility in the eyes of the examiner. Especially if the examiner has encountered the quote before, which she most probably has.

As regards the body of the IAS essay, keep these points in mind

– Analyse the topic from various perspectives; historical, geographical, economical, geopolitical, ethical viewpoint etc. It should be a multi-pronged essay. You are aiming to become a generalist administrator and your essay too should show you as one: Not delving too deeply into any esoteric topic but handling a variety of different topics.

– Do not use any advanced term which you learnt while preparing for your optional or your college graduation subject. Like if you have psychology as your optional, do not use any terms in the essay which only a psychologist would know. Or, if you have done economics in your graduation, you should not make the entire essay too economics-oriented and start using complex terms (even if they are with explanation) which only an economist would have encountered before.

Write in a very simple manner . The essay should show your analytical side, yes. But not so analytical that the examiner will have to read an “Introduction to Psychology” handbook before she has to correct your essay. She will just give the minimum marks possible if she is not able to understand what you have written.

– Use short sentences. They are easier to read and comprehend. Long winding sentences would get you nowhere.

– Have a solid thesis statement before you start writing the body of the essay. And mention it in your introduction. The essay must have consistency in thoughts and continuity in presentation. All the arguments which you put forth in the body of your essay should have a single aim. To convince your reader of the central thesis of the essay.

For example, in the UPSC 2014 Essay paper there was a question on whether tourism had great potential in India. So your central thesis could be that you believe that tourism is definitely a high-potential sector in India and with adequate investment in infrastructure it will fulfill its potential. After that every single paragraph in your essay should be about convincing the reader of the validity of your thesis statement. But from various perspectives. Say medical tourism, spiritual tourism, cultural tourism etc.

– Do not adopt an unnecessarily negative tone about any topic. If you are pessimistic about any issue, suggest ways by which you can overcome that problem. Also, it is not advisable to criticize the Government. If you have to absolutely it should be constructive criticism. But generally, refrain from doing so.

– Use short paragraphs . No one likes to read long winding clumps of words. You can occasionally use single-line paragraphs for writing a sentence of impact.

– Give real-life case studies and day to day examples to drive home the point.

Topic selection

As for topic selection for your essay, there will be some tough topics and some relatively easy ones. I do not want to pronounce some categorical statement that certain topics (like philosophical topics) do not give very high marks, so do not write them. Choosing the topic depends on your interest and a basic idea of what your strengths are. Devote the first 10 minutes of the exam to think and choose the topic which you want to write an essay on. It will be worth it. It is a very bad idea to change the topic of your essay during the middle of the exam.

The best way to prepare for the Essay paper is by writing mock essays. Say around ten. Pick the last five year UPSC essay papers. Choose two essays from each paper. And write the two essays in exam conditions by shutting yourself away in a room. Devote exactly three hours to the paper. Then get it evaluated from a trusted teacher or friends or by people who have already cleared the exam. Incorporate the suggestions given in your next exam. Practise and perseverance are the keys to cracking not just the Essay paper of the IAS exam but entering the IAS itself. 🙂

I have been told that I am idealistic. They say that is not a good trait to have as it keeps me from being realistic. They also say that attitude keeps me from being a solid responsible adult as I will always be chasing dreams and not working at a real job providing for my family.

It all started when my Uncle asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. Of course, I excitedly said I wanted to be an IAS officer. Those few words started it all off. The laughter, jokes, and embarrassing comments.

But my goal in life is to be an IAS officer and it is not an idealistic dream for me. I am already aware that very few people make it into those ranks yet I know I have what it takes to succeed. I just wish my family did as well.

Fortunately, I was able to get a hold of a web page that told me some tips to help make the journey a little easier for me. My mind is being prepared as I fend off my family’s attempts to dissuade me from achieving my goal.

Also, I do read newspapers a lot. There has always been one or two in our home since I was little. As I grew older I stopped reading the funny pages and started to read the more serious sections. Just by reading these few newspapers every day I have learned a lot about our country and how it operates.

My mother is a little more sympathetic and she has made sure I have all the textbooks I need to study and be prepared. She also helps me with my notes giving bits and pieces of advice on where I could improve my thinking.

It is a tough road I am traveling but I already know that I have to travel most of it alone. The burden is mine since this is my desire and objective. As I take each step I know I am getting better at preparation and learning a lot.

Right now I am going through the previous papers and learning how to answer the tough questions the exam will ask. My next step, once I have mastered this one, will be to have someone help me with the mock tests.

My motivation in this effort is not to show my family up and say ‘see I could do it’, then rub their noses in it. Instead, I am thinking that it would be a good career for me and that position will make my family proud.

It is a stable profession that brings a lot of respect and honor and I know I must be worthy of those attributes. Also, I know that I will make a positive contribution to my fellow citizens.

This aspect of the job will make my life worthwhile and give it some purpose. That helps me to function better. Knowing I am making a positive contribution and giving back to society inspires me to train and prepare to the best of my ability.

But again, I am not being idealistic in my quest. I am well aware that I will not be living an easy life as I help those people in rural India. I will see their living conditions and compare them with mine.

It is not going to be easy at first but I know I can handle this disparity and work hard to make their lives a lot better than it is now. This job I snot about me and my status but about my fellow citizens who did not get the same breaks as I have had.

That makes me work harder to achieve my goal. I just wish I had a little more support from my family so I can be a person making the best contribution to India possible.

Step 5: Take ClearIAS Mains Mock Exams. Polish your answer writing skills

Once aspirants learn the methods to write a well-structured answer, we will conduct Mains Mock Exams.

With respect to CSE Mains, UPSC allows candidates to pick an optional subject from about 50 subjects mentioned in the UPSC Syllabus. This includes subjects like History, Geography, Political Science, Anthropology, Public Administration etc.

As an optional subject varies from candidate to candidate, this is not included in the ClearIAS Ultimate Plan . ClearIAS Ultimate Plan covers everything except optional paper (ie. the General Studies portion of Prelims and Mains along with CSAT in Prelims and Essay in Mains). Aspirants should study optional subjects separately. They are free to either join ClearIAS Optional Coaching or learn the subject by self-study.

Step 7: Participate in the ClearIAS Interview Program

Usually, UPSC conducts the Civil Services Preliminary Exam in June. The Main Exam is usually conducted in September. The Personality Test takes almost 3 months to finish. UPSC conducts the CSE interview (or personality test) in the months of February – April.

The notification for the UPSC Civil Services Examination for 2024 will be published on February 14, 2023. You can apply for UPSC CSE 2024 between February 14, 2024, and March 05, 2024.

These were the words of Srushti Jayant Deshmukh, the 23-year old who secured the fifth rank in the 2018 UPSC IAS exam. Every year, lakhs of people attempt the civil services exam in the hope of becoming IAS officers. But, only a handful makes the cut in the end. What makes the few who crack the IAS exam so special and what drives them to take on an exam, considered the toughest in India?

UPSC 2018, AIR 1 – left a high-paying private job to serve the country

The UPSC 2018 results declared recently, was a surprise to Kanishak Kataria, the IIT-alumnus who bagged the first rank in his very first attempt! Though he was confident about his preparation, he was not expecting the first rank. What is moving out of his story is that he left a job abroad where he was earning almost one crore as salary, in order to become an IAS officer and work for the benefit of the country and her people. He achieved this feat by sheer hard work without worrying about the results much. He studied almost 14 hours every day and shut himself of all social media. He attended coaching in Delhi, although his preparation style was a mix of self-studies and coaching-assisted.

Success with just 4 months of preparation

Saumya Sharma’s story is one of inspiration. She cracked the IAS exam in her maiden attempt in 2017 and achieved a stupendous rank of 9! Sharma is a native of Delhi and a lawyer by training. She also has a hearing impairment, a disability which set in from her school days. According to Sharma, the most important thing to find success is self-belief. The next factor that is important for success is to find the right guidance. Since she did not join any offline coaching class, she relied heavily on online coaching material such as video lectures and interactive media. What makes Sharma’s success special is that she was able to crack the exam with just four months of preparation!

How a rickshaw-puller’s son became an IAS officer

Son of a rickshaw-puller, Varanasi-native Govind Jaiswal did not give himself any other option besides success. Jaiswal faced cruel taunts as a child because of his poverty and his father’s status, and this only propelled him to work hard. Despite studying in a government school and a modest college at his hometown, he had the IAS as his dream and knew that if he worked hard in the right manner with the correct approach, success would follow. Jaiswal struggled hard during his preparation days when sometimes, he even skipped meals to save money. But, he never lost his focus. In his very first attempt in 2006, Jaiswal cleared the IAS exam with a rank of 48. One decision, and the determination to fulfil a dream, changed the course of his life forever!

How to become an IAS topper?

There is no short-cut to success. There is also no sure-shot formula for success. Nevertheless, the success stories of all toppers reveal a few commonalities. These qualities and habits of toppers which when imbibed in the correct spirit, coupled with your own guided preparation strategy, can give you the UPSC success you dreamt of.

#1: Planned approach

The first step towards finding success in the IAS exam is to prepare a good study plan. The civil services exam is a process involving three exams spread over 12 months. This extensive process and the vast UPSC syllabus makes clearing this exam a tedious process. For this, you need to study the syllabus and then, chart out a plan as per your schedule and convenience. You must spend a fixed number of hours every day for your IAS preparation. Studying without a plan is like wandering aimlessly in the dark.

#2: Coaching

To clear an exam as demanding as this, there is a need for smart work also besides hard work. There are some things that only seasoned players and mentors know, like, for example, is the whole syllabus to be covered for all the subjects? How to select the important news from the newspapers for preparation? Which news items to leave out? How many past question papers to be looked at? Where to begin? A good coach or guide can help you get answers to all these questions and more. A good coach helps you with little tricks and tips by which you can increase your score with the same amount of work.

Always go by what your teachers or mentors suggest. Do your due diligence on books and magazines before acquiring them. Studying from the wrong sources would prove detrimental to your preparation. Every topper swears by this. Test series, both for the prelims and the mains are crucial for success in the UPSC CSE. There are many advantages of enrolling for a good test series. They offer you real exam simulation and also teach you the nuances of time management during the exam. For the prelims, you can also learn how to deftly avoid negative marking and do intelligent guessing. A good series also gives you feedback without which a test series is not quite useful. #5: Revision

The optional subject can make or break your mains score. A lot of thought has to go into deciding your optional subject. Choose wisely as the two optional papers count for 500 marks in the final tally.

When I think about my nation, India, I feel the gush of various emotions pacing up and down my mind and heart. Some leave me with a big smile and some leave me speechless and hurt at the same time. The relationship that we share with our country is the same that we share with our mothers. We are blessed with a country so diverse; which in itself has wrapped us in her arms and nurtures us in the most beautiful way, right from the time we are born. India has given us so much selflessly- only to stand by its expectations and echo its glory in the world.

While some of us are fortunate enough to have experienced the love and care of our motherland, it is equally true that some aren’t. Looking at the conditions prevailing in our country today we can think of many solutions and yes, we have seen some people putting genuine efforts to improve the conditions. But, the big picture, the big question is with such a large population, problems of illiteracy, poverty, etc. is there any hope for a remarkable improvement? In the race of becoming ‘successful’, ‘updated’ and ‘modern’ do we really bother about the unfortunate lot of the country? Even if we do, what do we do to help them?

These questions seem really easy to answer when framed and read, but once you think about it, it seems more like a vicious circle of questions representing the plight of the poor and illiterate people. The people we look up to for defending our honour, for keeping us safe, making us educated are themselves no longer the epitomes of kindness. We have witnessed many cases where the media people, bureaucrats, politicians, etc. are guilty of offences harming our country’s reputation globally.

When I dream of India, I picture it just the way a girl pictures her life. A life full of beauty, happiness, success and romance just how they manifest its idea in Hollywood movies. It is very obvious that India has achieved in various fields post our independence. There is no field where Indians haven’t imprinted their victory and names in the hearts of people all around the world. I feel very proud to have reading newspapers where I see names like Mr Satya Nadela, Ms Mary Kom, Ms Barkha Dutt, and so many more. It gives me a feeling of ineffable happiness to know about the people who are standing for themselves, working for their country’s name and being a role model for the millions of youth.

As I dream further I think about those unprivileged people for whom the govt. should provide more facilities and assistance. We know that the major part of India’s population resides in villages, what if our rural become self – sufficient and independent. Proper supply of water, electricity and basic facilities like sanitation, medicines, etc. should be provided. Agriculture is the major occupation of people in India. We should use it as our strength for self-sufficiency, increase in exports, surplus and providing job opportunities.

When a woman, who is responsible for the development of her child and family, becomes educated it is going to affect the society as a whole. If women are encouraged to study and most importantly to speak up for themselves, India would be in a far better position. Just the idea of voting for your leader is not enough for a drastic change that we seek to take place. It is not only an issue of rural areas but urban areas as well. Do we see the equal ratio of girls and boys in our schools, at public places, driving cars, or as professionals? It is high time that we provide women for what they deserve and they stand by it. Mere thought of fear from critics of the society or their own family makes them take a step back and bury their dreams and wishes themselves. Men must begin to encourage women and supporting them rather than acting likes judges and mere spectators. We have to put a lot of efforts along with determination to convert our patriarchal society into a society respectful for everyone.

As people age they lose the hope of achieving anything in life. These are the people who could not become something on account of the situations they had to face when they were younger, who chose responsibility over their dreams. Is that the end of the world for them? No, it is never too late to learn. The government should help them pursue some kind of occupation in which they already are interested to boost their self-confidence. Counselling centres should be set up so that they do not lose the battle of life even before participating in it.

It is also important that we bridge the gap between the rich and poor. The poor keeps on becoming poorer and is exploited for fulfilling his basic needs. The disabled people are judged even before they try to speak up. The Govt. must facilitate them with education and some kind of work too so they find a meaning in their lives.

There should be an increase in the number of institutions even in the small cities so that the people who are not very capable would not have to feel helpless about their higher education. The encouragement of just any one sector of profession leads to demotivation of the youth. Girls are discouraged to opt for PhD as they think it is a waste of her time and her parents’ resources. Why are we discouraged from listening to our hearts? Is this how God wanted us to be? I do not agree when the creator made no differences then why do we discriminate among everybody and belittle others? If there would be options of institutes in various regions people would be more serious about their careers living with their parents and for that matter, disciplined too.

This is not all, it would bring about many opportunities in small towns and cities too for the youth to work and earn well. Just like the people of the West, we also want to become independent as soon as we finish our studies so that we could help our parents. It is important to note that every now and then many people migrate here and there in search of better jobs and opportunities. The cut-throat competition and pressure of better performance puts a lot of pressure on the youth.

The Govt. has to make a number of decisions in respect to the children and youth. Along with free education it should be kept in mind that India is a place of budding writers, sportsmen, dancers and so on. The Govt. must provide them with more scholarships, sponsors and facilities to create detachable strings in their dreams to become successful.

The Govt. that we depend solely on so many things, should me much more of a stronger institution. The wise people do not wish to enter into the ‘dirty’ politics but if they do not, how would there be a change? We look up to our parents because we know they are going to stand by us no matter what and this is the same that we expect from our govt. but, it has always failed to show us its support in various cases and times. We need young people with broad minds and positive attitudes, there should be a pre-decided retirement age, and conditions to enter into politics. The institution that runs the country has to be free of corruption and people with puny brains and mind-sets. Only then the women, poor and others would be respected in the country.

There are many people who use their status in a way to exploit people for example the many ‘swamis’ who get caught time-to-time for fooling people. Our country is blessed with great knowledge of astrology and rituals but it should not be done in a way to increase corruption and superstition. The knowledge must be respected as a heritage of our fore-fathers and be carried on with respect.

A check on control of liquor and other available drugs which is the cause of many accidents and deaths is important. Even the top officials and politicians promote its consumption by distributing them for free to get identity, votes, hassle-free work in various regions. The police should be paid well so that corruption including bribes stops then and there. If paid well the Indian citizens would not choose working in western countries over India, putting a halt to brain-drain.

As quoted by Erasmus, “The main hope of a nation lies in the proper education of its youth.” Well if that is, do we really realize our responsibility as the youth of our nation? The privileged and fortunate lot who get to study in the top institutions are often caught in cases of drugs, molestation, sexual harassment and so on. If education is the cure then why even the creamy layer of students from best schools and colleges are doing things least expected from them and ruining their parents’ and country’s name ?

The answers to everything wrong going on in our country is very simple - Our prejudice, upbringing, moral values, respect towards others, mentality and attitude. Even today we are judged by our caste, colour, physical appearance, sexual orientation, etc. no matter what peaks of achievements we have touched. Our characters solely judged on our personal lives, weaknesses and behaviour in the society. Have you ever known the life of a little rural girl? An innocent face with infinite hopes, dreams, eyes craving for the sight of toys, schools and lovely pink dresses. Yes, her favourite colour is pink too, that we forgot fulfilling our ‘wants’. While complaining the next time we should for once think about that widow who is cursed by the society on account of her husband’s death. The little girl who was raped even before she could realize she was turning into a woman. The parents whose child got killed in the ‘city’ trying to match the standards of the people around him.

When the morning headlines fall short of achievements; when no woman , no poor dies of agony and pain; when democracy really becomes ‘for’ the people; when the only time tears roll down a mother’s cheeks is when she celebrates her child’s victory. When the little hands get tired of writing instead of working in homes of the rich; when women could stand up for their rights without being afraid of an acid-attack; when no suicides are reported on account of poor academic performances. Where we learn from the Hindus and Muslims of Pilkhua to live together in harmony; when the youth discuss sense over fashion; the creamy layer spend on charities rather than on latest ‘status symbols’. It would be India of my dreams. Where we could breathe our last in peace and contentment.

Dreams and Challenges: How Santosh Kumar Patel overcame poverty to become a DSP

This is the remarkable story of DSP Santosh Kumar Patel, who rose from the challenges of poverty in a small village in Madhya Pradesh to achieve the 22nd rank in the MPPSC and fulfill his dream of becoming a police officer.

DSP Santosh Kumar Patel's journey is nothing short of extraordinary. Hailing from a small village in Madhya Pradesh, he studied by the dim glow of a kerosene lamp and worked tirelessly, carrying bricks to earn just enough for two meals a day. Despite these formidable challenges, he achieved the 22nd rank in the MPPSC. His story stands as a powerful testament to resilience and determination, highlighting his remarkable path from hardship to success.

Facing challenges

Santosh Kumar Patel hailes from Devgaon village in Madhya Pradesh. He faced a tough choice early in his life: either work as a construction worker like his father or try to get an education. He needed to help support his family but also wanted to learn. With the support and advice of his hardworking parents, he decided to follow his dream of education.

Triumph over poverty

Thanks to his relentless determination and hard work, he achieved his dream of becoming a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP). Despite facing limited resources and poverty, he overcame incredible odds to reach his goal.

Life's struggles

There was a time when this family could barely afford a square meal. In an interview with The Better India, 31-year-old DCP Santosh Patel reflected on his childhood, sharing that their meals were often very basic. On good days, they had rice, while on others, they just ate porridge. When wheat was unavailable, they ate jowar rotis, and he sometimes had to borrow wheat rotis from friends at school. Despite facing poverty early on, Santosh learned the value of hard work from his father, a mason, and his mother, an agricultural labourer.

Working with father

Santosh Kumar Patel frequently helped his father with his masonry work, accompanying him as a labourer wherever he went. While his father laid bricks, Santosh carried them. He also supported his mother in the fields. Despite his parents’ concerns for his safety, Santosh was more worried about their well-being.

Santosh shared that his father used to dig wells in the village during the summer months, a dangerous job that few masons would take on. Often, while working inside the wells, stones would fall on him. Reflecting on his father's hardships, an emotional Santosh noted that his parents were deeply worried about his future.

Family's constant support

His parents dreamed of a brighter future for their son and were determined for him to receive a good education. They continuously encouraged him to study. Driven by their support and his own relentless determination, Santosh studied by the faint light of a kerosene lamp. His hard work paid off when he achieved top ranks in his class 10 exams, thanks to the unyielding efforts of his parents.

MPPSC success

Santosh continued his engineering studies before deciding to pursue a career in the police force. After 15 months of preparation, he passed the MPPSC exam in July 2017 with the 22nd rank. By 2018, he had officially joined the police force. Committed to serving the public and enhancing the police’s reputation, Santosh believes that only criminals should fear the police. In his role, he is dedicated to ensuring that innocent people are never wrongly imprisoned.
