Fully Funded PhD Programs in Mathematics

As part of my series on How to Fully Fund Your PhD , I provide a list of universities that offer full funding for a PhD in Mathematics. A graduate degree in Mathematics can prepare you for a career in many different fields including science and engineering, banking, finance, research, and academia.

“Full funding” is a financial aid package for full-time students that includes full tuition remission and an annual stipend or salary for the three to the six-year duration of the student’s doctoral studies. Funding is typically offered in exchange for graduate teaching and research work that is complementary to your studies. Not all universities provide full funding to their doctoral students, which is why I recommend researching the financial aid offerings of all the potential PhD programs in your academic field, including small and lesser-known schools both in the U.S. and abroad.

Baylor University, Department of Mathematics (Waco, TX): Funding for the first four years of the PhD is automatic and includes a $24,000 per year stipend and full tuition remission plus health benefits.

Cornell University, Department of Mathematics (Ithaca, NY): All full-time students in Applied Mathematics receive a full support package and are guaranteed five years of funding, subject to satisfactory academic progress. Upon availability, students in their sixth year are also funded.

University of Pennsylvania, Department of Mathematics (Philadelphia, PA): Full-time students admitted to our Ph.D. program are offered a financial support package combining fellowships and teaching assistantships. The package covers tuition and fees, and health insurance and also provides a stipend for five years.

Princeton University, Department of Mathematics (Princeton, NJ): Princeton guarantees to fund its regularly enrolled, degree-seeking Ph.D. candidates for all years of regular program enrollment. Over a Ph.D. student’s years of regular enrollment, this funding may come from a variety of sources, which in combination provide a minimum level of annual support that includes full tuition and fees support and a base stipend amount.

Rice University, Department of Computational and Applied Mathematics (Houston, TX): The fellowship for PhD students includes a stipend for living expenses from the department and a tuition waiver from the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Historically, doctoral students who have performed well continue to receive financial support in the form of research assistantships during their entire doctoral studies.

Stanford University, Department of Mathematics (Stanford, CA): All admitted PhD students who make satisfactory progress are fully funded for five years. Funding sources include department fellowships, teaching assistantships, and research assistantships.

Syracuse University, Department of Mathematics (Syracuse, NY): Every applicant for graduate study is automatically considered for financial support (teaching assistantships, fellowships, and research assistantships). There is no additional application required. Teaching assistantships carry a stipend (2021-2022) ranging from $19,700 to $23,800 for the academic year.

Course content

Throughout your PhD you will focus on learning what information is already published and identifying gaps in knowledge. You will start to formulate your own research questions and develop skills to become a professional researcher.

• Study the research literature in your field, guided by your PhD advisor
• Attend seminars on modern research
• Take additional training in mathematical sciences and research skills
• Conduct research and obtain novel results
• Be part of an active and welcoming community of research students
• Write annual reports and journal publications to communicate your research findings
• Complete a written thesis of up to 100,000 words
• Take a verbal examination (viva voce) where you defend your research to an expert examination panel

The emphasis is on both broadening your knowledge base and improving the skills and techniques relevant for doing research on thesis-specific matters.

The PhD programme includes a training element, which may include research work as well as traditional taught material, and will include assessed components, designed to support your research.

In each year you will have a regular meetings with your supervisor and an annual review.

Entry requirements

All candidates are considered on an individual basis and we accept a broad range of qualifications. The entrance requirements below apply to 2025 entry.

Meeting our English language requirements

If you need support to meet the required level, you may be able to attend a presessional English course. Presessional courses teach you academic skills in addition to English language. Our  Centre for English Language Education is accredited by the British Council for the teaching of English in the UK.

If you successfully complete your presessional course to the required level, you can then progress to your degree course. This means that you won't need to retake IELTS or equivalent.

For on-campus presessional English courses, you must take IELTS for UKVI to meet visa regulations. For online presessional courses, see our CELE webpages for guidance.

Visa restrictions

International students must have valid UK immigration permissions for any courses or study period where teaching takes place in the UK. Student route visas can be issued for eligible students studying full-time courses. The University of Nottingham does not sponsor a student visa for students studying part-time courses. The Standard Visitor visa route is not appropriate in all cases. Please contact the university’s Visa and Immigration team if you need advice about your visa options.

Application process and deadlines

We encourage applicants to apply before early to have the best chances of being awarded a fully-funded PhD scholarship (covers stipend and fees).

Stage 1 : Your application is assessed, and if successful, you will be invited for an interview. This is a video call or in person, if possible

Stage 2 : If successful at the interview stage, you will be considered for a fully-funded PhD scholarship.

When will you know if scholarship awarded?

• If applied before 7 January, result will be known around mid-February
• Late applications will be considered in subsequent rounds, with results known around mid April (if applied by 7 March) , and mid-June (if applied by 7 May ), and possibly later rounds depending on remaining available scholarships.

If you have funding support, intend to apply for an external scholarship, or are self-funded, you can apply throughout the year. Please indicate your funding details clearly in your application.

Study duration

Our standard duration of study is 3.5 years, although 3 or 4 year study is also available in some cases.

Additional information for international students

If you are a student from the EU, EEA or Switzerland, you may be asked to complete a fee status questionnaire and your answers will be assessed using guidance issued by the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) .

These fees are for full-time study. If you are studying part-time, you will be charged a proportion of this fee each year (subject to inflation).

Additional costs

All students will need at least one device to approve security access requests via Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). We also recommend students have a suitable laptop to work both on and off-campus. For more information, please check the equipment advice .

We do not anticipate any extra significant costs, alongside your tuition fees and living expenses. You should be able to access most of the books and journals you’ll need through our libraries.

We offer a number of projects each year for which scholarship funding are available, including from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council ( EPSRC ) and the University.

First class or distinction results are required as a minimum for funding.

Student support

The School of Mathematical Sciences provides dedicated support to its postgraduate researchers, including:

• Access to an appropriate personal computer
• Financial support to attend conferences and workshops
• Opportunity to earn extra money by supporting our teaching with demonstrating and marking
• You have a right to holiday leave, sick leave, and maternity/parental leave. You may also be able to switch to part-time (50%) PhD, depending on the approval of your funder

Wellbeing support

Your supervisors will support you throughout your research period. There is also further support within the school including:

• Mentoring system amongst research students
• Mentoring system between research students and postdoctoral research fellows
• Mental health support in the form of regular meetings for research students only
• Dedicated contacts for Support and Wellbeing, and for PGR Student Advice

To support training and learning, the school has access to specialised mathematical training courses provided by MAGIC (one of six Taught Course Centres supporting PhD mathematics programmes in the UK). Students can also utilise the Academy for PhD Training in Statistics (APTS).

Where you will learn

Computer facilities.

The University provides excellent computing facilities with access to specialist mathematical software. The computers have electronic links to a high performance computing facility and specialist mathematical software such as Matlab, Mathematica and Maple.

University Park Campus

University Park Campus  covers 300 acres, with green spaces, wildlife, period buildings and modern facilities. It is one of the UK's most beautiful and sustainable campuses, winning a national Green Flag award every year since 2003.

Most schools and departments are based here. You will have access to libraries, shops, cafes, the Students’ Union, sports village and a health centre.

You can walk or cycle around campus. Free hopper buses connect you to our other campuses. Nottingham city centre is 15 minutes away by public bus or tram.

Jubilee Campus

Jubilee Campus has eco-friendly buildings, alongside green spaces, wildlife and a lake. 

This campus is home to our business, education and computer science schools, as well as a sports centre and student accommodation.

You can walk to  University Park Campus  in around 20 minutes or catch a free hopper bus. Nottingham city centre is 20 minutes away by public bus.

Furnished offices

As a research student here you will benefit from use of a furnished office which you'll share with other PhD students. You'll be provided with your own desk and personal computer or laptop and may make full use of general school facilities, including the common room, shared with academic staff.

The mathematics building benefits from lots of open space for discussion with staff and students and most of the supervisors are based in the same building too.

Scholarships

The Mathematical Institute has several scholarships available for postgraduate study. For most scholarships, all applicants submitting their application by the relevant deadline and meeting any additional criteria will be considered. 

The University also offers many other scholarships which are assessed throughout the admissions period, and can be awarded any time between March - June. To be considered for these you must be made an offer of a place first, so an offer of funding may follow the offer of a place by weeks or months.

This is not an easy question to answer, as there are so many different scholarships available through the University. As all offer-holders may be considered for all scholarships they are eligible for, the number each year may vary. 

How do I apply for a scholarship?

For most scholarships, all applicants are considered as part of the assessment process. There are some exceptions, notable the Martingale Foundation scholarships, which require an application directly to them, as well as some other University scholarships. How much is a scholarship worth?

This varies by scholarship, but often a scholarship will cover all fees and a set amount towards living costs. Details are sent as part of a funding offer to successful applicants.

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Surrey is offering up to 4 fully funded PhD studentships across its vibrant research groups, which focus on topics such as data science, life and social sciences, fluid mechanics, dynamical systems and PDEs and mathematical physics.

Each PhD studentship is fully-funded, including fees and a tax-free stipend, at UKRI studentship rates covered for the duration of 3 to 4 years for UK candidates. International candidates are welcome to apply but will need to cover the difference between the UK and overseas fees.

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Surrey is offering up to four fully funded PhD studentships across its vibrant research groups, which focus on topics such as data science, life and social sciences, fluid mechanics, dynamical systems and PDEs and mathematical physics.

Successful applicants will be part of a strong research-focussed department consisting of internationally recognised potential supervisors, supported by a community of ambitious early career researchers. As a PhD student you will be extensively trained for a career as a professional mathematician, which will set you on the right track for a future in academia, industry or government.

During your PhD you will also receive a comprehensive training in professional skills such as project management, communication and time management through our Faculty Graduate School. In addition, you will broaden your mathematical horizons by taking courses via national networks such as the MAGIC consortium as well as our own in-house MSc programme.

We are seeking high-quality PhD candidates to work on research projects in all our research groups. Possible PhD projects include, but are not limited to, the following list:

• Data-driven modelling and machine learning for biological applications
• Mathematical modelling, data science or dynamical systems analysis of sleep regulation
• From signal processing to biology: Application of stochastic filtering to model bio-system dynamics
• Design of Experiments: investigation of observation loss in row column designs
• Incompressible buckling and non-uniqueness of minimizers in the Calculus of Variations.
• Attractor signatures from ECG data for the detection of arrhythmias
• Hydrodynamic models of hybrid quantum-classical systems
• Quantitative Systems Pharmacology: mechanistic models for pre-clinical cancer drug trials
• Massless scattering, spin-chains and thermodynamic Bethe ansatz in the integrable AdS3/CFT2 and AdS2/CFT1 correspondences
• Nonlinear structures in vortices with radial density variations.
• Analysis of `pressure functionals' and associated PDE in Nonlinear Elasticity

Eligibility criteria

Applicants should have a minimum of a first class honours degree in mathematics, the physical sciences or engineering. Preferably applicants will hold a MMath, MPhys or MSc degree, though exceptional BSc students will be considered.

English language requirements

IELTS requirements:  6.5 or above (or equivalent) with 6.0 in each individual category.

The PhD in Mathematics offers an intellectually stimulating and dynamic research course. Study at the University of Warwick's Mathematics Institute, an international centre of research excellence, ranked 3rd for research power and 3rd for the number of 4* research outputs in REF 2021 (amongst UK universities).

Course overview

Mathematics at Warwick covers the full spectrum of mathematics and its applications. The Mathematics Postgraduate Degrees are appropriate for students with a strong and broad mathematical background who wish to engage in advanced mathematical techniques and attack mathematical research problems in their postgraduate work.

All students are required to undergo training in Year One and are encouraged to make use of further training opportunities available in subsequent years. Training ranges from gaining a broader knowledge of mathematics through taught modules, seminars and workshops, to enhancing your professional and transferrable skills. Our PhD students undertake high quality original research and are being well-prepared for a career, either in academia or elsewhere.

Teaching and learning

Students are required to complete a series of modules in their first year (from a very wide selection of bespoke modules), with assessment including an oral examination component. Upon the successful completion of these modules, students are required to complete a research project before being formally upgraded to a PhD at the end of the first year.

Training will be supplemented with attendance to seminars, cohort building activities, and additional transferable skills training.

Minimum requirements.

First Class Honours undergraduate integrated Master's (4-year) degree from a UK university in Mathematics or a science degree with high mathematical content, or the equivalent qualification and grade from a non-UK university.

Alternatively, applicants who have a Bachelor's degree AND a Distinction in a postgraduate Master's degree would be considered.

Research proposals

Warwick academics can supervise thesis research in a wide range of topics in mathematics and its applications. In addition, all PhD projects are expected to be co-supervised by an external partner, bringing knowledge, data and experience to the modelling of real-world problems.

We carry out an initial fee status assessment based on the information you provide in your application. Students will be classified as Home or Overseas fee status. Your fee status determines tuition fees, and what financial support and scholarships may be available. Degrees and GPA Requirements

Bachelors degree: All graduate applicants must hold an earned baccalaureate from a regionally accredited college or university or the recognized equivalent from an international institution.

University GPA requirement: The minimum grade point average for admission consideration for graduate study at the University of Denver must meet one of the following criteria:

A cumulative 2.5 on a 4.0 scale for the baccalaureate degree.

A cumulative 2.5 on a 4.0 scale for the last 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits (approximately two years of work) for the baccalaureate degree.

An earned master’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution or the recognized equivalent from an international institution supersedes the minimum GPA requirement for the baccalaureate.

A cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for all graduate coursework completed for applicants who have not earned a master’s degree or higher.

Program GPA requirement: 2.5 on a 4.0 scale

Official scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), C1 Advanced or Duolingo English Test are required of all graduate applicants, regardless of citizenship status, whose native language is not English or who have been educated in countries where English is not the native language. Your TOEFL/IELTS/C1 Advanced/Duolingo English Test scores are valid for two years from the test date.

The minimum TOEFL/IELTS/C1 Advanced/Duolingo English Test score requirements for this degree program are:

Minimum TOEFL Score (Internet-based test): 80

Minimum IELTS Score: 6.5

Minimum C1 Advanced Score: 176

Minimum Duolingo English Test Score: 115

Required Essays and Statements

We require a scanned copy of your transcripts from every college or university you have attended. Scanned copies must be clearly legible and sized to print on standard 8½-by-11-inch paper. Transcripts that do not show degrees awarded must also be accompanied by a scanned copy of the diploma or degree certificate. If your academic transcripts were issued in a language other than English, both the original documents and certified English translations are required.

Transcripts and proof of degree documents for postsecondary degrees earned from institutions outside of the United States will be released to a third-party international credential evaluator to assess U.S. education system equivalencies. Beginning July 2023, a non-refundable fee for this service will be required before the application is processed.

Upon admission to the University of Denver, official transcripts will be required from each institution attended.

GRE scores are optional for admission to this program. Applications submitted without scores will receive full consideration. Every application undergoes a comprehensive evaluation, including a careful review of all application materials. If you choose to submit test scores, you may upload your Test Taker Score Report PDF, which is considered unofficial. Official scores must be received directly from the appropriate testing agency upon admission to the University of Denver. The ETS institution code to submit GRE scores to the University of Denver is 4842.

We have a very active and involved mathematics faculty , diverse course offerings and a broad seminar schedule , with a variety of research projects and strengths in algebra, analysis, geometry-topology, combinatorics, logic, probability, and mathematical physics. Funding Opportunities

The School of Mathematics offers several fully funded PhD studentships each year. Students receiving School funding are awarded a stipend equivalent to UKRI stipend rates for a period of 4 years plus fees.  Applications must be received by Monday 22 January 2024 in order to be considered for School and ESPSRC funding opportunities. Late applications may also be considered if there are still places.  There is no need to submit a separate application for these. 

Martingale Foundation Scholarships

We are delighted to announce that we are one of the Martingale Foundation's newest university partners. The Martingale Foundation helps provide access to postgraduate mathematics study for UK students facing financial barriers by offering fully-funded MSc and PhD programmes. 

Applications are made via the  Martingale Foundation website  and the application deadline is Wednesday 25 October 2023.

These awards are available to all applicants and provide full support (fees and stipend). The stipend is set by UKRI on an annual basis (stipend payment levels for 2023-24 are £18,622).  Applications must be received by Monday 22 January 2024 in order to be considered for School and ESPSRC funding opportunities. Late applications may also be considered if there are still places.  There is no need to submit a separate application for these. 

Edinburgh Doctoral College Scholarships 

In 2024-25, the School will offer a fully funded Edinburgh Doctoral College Scholarship. This scholarship provides tuition fees and a stipend for 4 years. The award is open to UK and overseas applicants applying to start their first year of study in 2024-25.

Applicants must be of outstanding academic merit and research potential. Candidates must have, or expect to obtain, a UK first class or 2.1 honours degree at undergraduate level or the international equivalent. 

Successful applicants will undertake a package of training and development which will help you to develop the necessary skills required to meet your career choices and offer you a breath of development opportunities in areas suuch as teaching, public engagement, entrepreneurship, data science and research. 

The application deadline for this opportunity is the end of Monday 19 February 2024.

The EDCS application must be made via the Scholarships portal on MyEd. Once you have made an application for the programme of study, you will receive an email with MyEd login details.

In order to gain access to the scholarship application system, applicants must have applied for admission to the University of Edinburgh.  Please note that, following the submission of an application for admission, it can take up to 10 working days for all system checks to be completed and for access to be granted.

China Scholarship Council/University of Edinburgh Scholarships

There will be one scholarship available for PhD study to candidates who are citizens and permanent residents of the People's Republic of China at the time of applying for entry for the academic year 2024-25. Candidates should not be working outside China at the time of application and successful candidates must agree to return to China upon completion of their degree. Candidates studying outside China are eligible to apply but not those who have already commenced a PhD programme prior to the 2024-25 academic year.

To be considered for this scholarship applicants should complete the below China Scholarship Council/University of Edinburgh Scholarship application form with should be submitted to [email protected]  by the deadline .  

There will be an internal selection process and successful candidates will be notified via email.  Candidates nominated by the University to be considered for a scholarship should satisfy the selection criteria set out by CSC by completing the CSC Application form and CSC Employer Reference form which can be found on their website . You must ensure you select the correct scholarship scheme -  Institutional & Personal Channel , as there are several schemes. Please note that applicants for this scholarship must be able to prove that they meet the University's English language requirements at the time of application. 

The scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic merit and candidates must have obtained, or be predicted to obtain, the equivalent of a first-class honours degree from a Chinese University.

Programme description

The The Department of Mathematics has an outstanding research reputation. The research facilities include one of the finest libraries in the country, the John Rylands University Library. This library has recently made a very large commitment of resources to providing comprehensive online facilities for the free use of the University's research community. Postgraduate students in the Department benefit from direct access to all the Library electronic resources from their offices.

Many research seminars are held in the Department on a weekly basis and allow staff and research students to stay in touch with the latest developments in their fields. The Department is one of the lead partners in the MAGIC project and research students can attend any of the postgraduate courses offered by the MAGIC consortium.

Fees for entry in 2025 have not yet been set. For reference, the fees for the academic year beginning September 2024 were as follows:

The programme fee will vary depending on the cost of running the project. Fees quoted are fully inclusive and, therefore, you will not be required to pay any additional bench fees or administration costs.

All fees for entry will be subject to yearly review and incremental rises per annum are also likely over the duration of the course for Home students (fees are typically fixed for International students, for the course duration at the year of entry). We have a number of funded positions and funding opportunities available for our PhD applicants listed below. Please note that all submitted PhD applications are automatically considered for school based funding during the admissions process.

University of Bristol PhD Scholarships

The School has a number of University of Bristol Scholarships for both home and overseas students commencing their PhDs in 2024/25. These can be awarded on a full-time or part-time basis. At least one scholarship will be allocated to a student in an under-represented group.     

These scholarships, normally available for a period of up to 4 years, are awarded on a competitive basis across the School of Mathematics, to students with relevant undergraduate degrees at the First Class level, or equivalent.     

For students eligible for Home fees, a University of Bristol scholarship meets all the tuition fees and pays a maintenance allowance to the student. In 2023/24, the value of this allowance is £ 18,622 which is a net amount and not subject to tax or national insurance.   

EPSRC DTP Positions

A common method of funding comes directly from the School, which receives partial funding from the  Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)  for students undertaking PhD degrees, known as Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTPs). These EPSRC studentships, normally available for a period of up to 4 years, are awarded on a competitive basis across the School of Mathematics, to students with relevant undergraduate degrees at the First Class level, or equivalent.  

For students eligible for Home fees, an EPSRC studentship meets all the tuition fees and pays a maintenance allowance to the student. This is at the  standard UKRI studentship rate and is  not subject to tax or national insurance.  Supplements may be available  for disabled students, mature students, students with dependents and for students with suitable postgraduate work experience.

The School of Mathematics may also have a number of DTA studentships for students with International fee status.

Heilbronn Doctoral Partnership

PhD in Mathematics

The Heilbronn Doctoral Partnership invites applications for funded PhD studentships in association with the School of Mathematics at the University of Bristol. We are seeking applicants with preferred topics including the general areas of pure mathematics, probability, data science, and quantum information. 

In addition to undertaking cutting-edge research, under the close supervision of a member of staff in the School of Mathematics, students on this programme will have the opportunity to participate in summer workshops in years 1-3. It is anticipated these will be about 4 weeks in length and residential in nature (with extra costs covered as appropriate). 

Students from traditionally under-represented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

Tutoring and Marking (UK/EU/International)

Postgraduate students may have an opportunity to supplement their income by giving first-year undergraduate tutorials and marking undergraduate work. As well as providing additional income, you also gain useful transferable skills.

We recommend that students only work up to 6 hours per week. Typically, as a rough guide, through these activities our students earn in the range of £1,600 to £2,000 per year tax-free. Overseas students would need to provide proof that they are allowed to work in the UK. The School organises training sessions for all students who undertake supervision or marking.
