The Big IDEAS: What is power?

The Sacred Spell of Words

Power is language.

essay on power word

By N. Scott Momaday

Mr. Momaday is an author, poet and playwright.

This is the first essay in The Big Ideas, a special section of The Times’s philosophy series, The Stone , in which more than a dozen notable thinkers and writers — including Elena Ferrante, Cornel West, Yuval Harari, Gen. Wesley Clark and others — answer the question, “What is power?”

The term “power” is everywhere in our world. Thinking of it, the phrase “word inflation” comes to mind. Much of what we encounter in print, on television and in advertising centers on the concept of power.

But what is that concept? What is power? The truth is that the word bears an impossible burden of interpretation. Definitions are myriad; the dictionary lists an unusual number of meanings. Surely power is what it is — that which enables us to influence, if not indeed determine, the course of our lives.

And it is a word.

Words are powerful. As a writer, my experience tells me that nothing is more powerful. Language, after all, is made of words.

Words are conceptual symbols; they have denotative and connotative properties. The word “power” denotes force, physical strength, resistance. But it connotes something more subtle: persuasion, suggestion, inspiration, security.

essay on power word

Power Words Every Essay Writer Must Know How to Use

essay on power word

When it comes to essay writing, some words are especially powerful. I call them Power Words.

I’m Tutor Phil, and in this tutorial, you’ll harness the power of four such words. What can power words do for you? Great question!

Power words can help you:

  • Get your ideas flowing
  • Make a better impression on your instructor
  • Organize or expand your essay

Without further ado, let’s dive in and make these power words our own!

Power Word 1: “ Therefore ”

What’s so special about it, and why is it a Power Word? Here’s what it does for you:

  • It shows that you’ve done your homework researching the subject
  • It tells the reader that you are a smart and logical person
  • It adds credibility to your explanations
  • If used with correct punctuation, it improves your professor’s overall impression of your writing.

So, how do we use the word “ therefore ?”

We use it to make a logical conclusion from a previously stated thought. For example:

“Apples contain lots of iron and are a great source of heart-healthy fiber. Therefore , apples are a healthy food.”

This word can be used in two different places within a sentence: in the beginning or in the middle. For example:

In the beginning:

“Summers fly by very fast. Therefore, every summer day should be enjoyed to the fullest.”

In the middle:

“Summers fly by very fast. Every summer day, therefore, should be enjoyed to the fullest.”

You can write it either way – both are perfectly acceptable. But here’s a bit of advice:

Alternate the two ways. Write “ therefore ” in the beginning of a sentence a couple of times, and the next time write it in the middle.

This is a very simple but powerful way to show your professor that you are smart and have a good taste in writing as well as good grammar skills.

Note on punctuation

When you write the word “ therefore ” in the beginning of the sentence, use a comma right after it, just like in the examples above.

When you write it in the middle of the sentence, just enclose it in between commas. The best place to put this word is right between the subject and the verb.

Power Word 2: “ And ”

The word “ And ” has special powers. It can unite. And it can separate. How can one word perform opposite functions?

essay on power word

Power word “ And ” is a conjunction. When you encounter it while reading, you know that it signals a separation into distinct concepts.

When you’re writing an essay, using the word “ and ” helps you think more clearly about your ideas.

Whenever you encounter the word “ and ,” you know that it connects or separates distinct bits of intellectual content.

Many permutations of this word exist. Here are some of its equivalents:

  • In addition
  • Furthermore

How can this word help you in your college writing? Here’s an example. Let’s say that your professor gives you a writing assignment, and it sounds something like this:

“Discuss Iago’s motivations and methods of persuasion in Shakespeare’s Othello.”

What does the word “ and ” tell you here? It tells you that you should divide this essay topic into two parts.

First , you’ll discuss Iago’s motivations.

Second , you’ll discuss his methods of persuasion.

The word “ and ” has just helped you structure your essay. At least you know the main sections. And all it took was noticing the word “ and ” in the essay prompt, and then applying it to your own essay structure.

And that’s something very useful to know about writing assignments.

Take your professors’ writing assignments literally and look for power words which can help you organize your essay.

Power Word 3: “ But ”

Providing a balanced perspective is a mark of a smart and experienced writer. I’ll introduce you to a word that you already know, but whose power you may not have realized until now. It will allow you to:

  • Convey that you are unbiased and value other people’s opinions
  • Present you as a serious writer who cares about the subject
  • Expand your content even more

This Power Word is “ But .”

Are you surprised? Were you hoping for something fancier than that? You don’t need fancy words to be a good essay writer. Just become a master of a few, and your writing will improve dramatically.

The word “ But ” acts as a partition within your reader’s mind. It is so powerful because it clearly indicates a separation into opposites. When you’re reading a difficult text, this word can help you make out its meaning.

When you’re writing, it helps you organize ideas, just like the word “ and ” does.

In the diagram below, you can see how Shakespeare uses this word to divide his sonnet 18 into two main sections, each about a distinct subject:

essay on power word

In this sonnet, Shakespeare states right in the beginning that he intends to compare “ you ” with the summer . And that’s exactly what he does.

The word “ But ” in line 9 clearly indicates a separation into sections. Section one (lines 1-8) is about the summer , and section two (lines 9-14) is about “ You .”

I actually made a video in which I analyze the sonnet in detail. I highly recommend that you watch it to see power words in action. Here it is:

Here are some of the equivalents of the word “But”:

  • Nevertheless
  • Unfortunately
  • Nonetheless

And here is my video about the Power Words “ And ” and “ But ,” if you like video lessons:

Power Word 4: “ Since ”

Each power word works differently. The word “ since ” has a couple of meanings, but we’re interested in only one – it is essentially an equivalent of the word “ because .”

Let me give you an example.

“Since I knew I would be free on the weekend, I agreed to participate in the rally.”

“Since you’re now a college student, you should be more organized.”

In these cases, the word “ since ” works pretty much like the word “ because .” For example, you could say,

“Because I knew I would be free on the weekend, I agreed to participate in the rally.”

It’s just a bit more elegant to use the word “ since ” instead of the word “ because ” when using it in the beginning of a sentence.

How would you use it to give yourself a boost of creativity?

It’s very easy. When you feel you’re stuck and out of ideas, simply start a new sentence and write the first word: “Since…”

Remember – any sentence that begins with “ since ” must have two parts: the fact and what follows from that fact . Let’s look at this sentence again:

“Since I knew I would be free on the weekend, I agreed to participate in the rally.”

Here, the first part is “ I knew I would be free on the weekend. ” This is the fact. I knew I would be free. In my mind, it is a fact.

Now, here’s the second part: “ I agreed to participate in the rally. ” This is what follows from that fact. Since I knew I’d be free, I agreed to participate.

In other words, part two is logically dependent on part one . If I am free, I can participate.

Please note that each of the parts is a complete sentence with its own subject and verb.

“I knew” – these are a subject and a verb.

“I agreed” – these are a subject and a verb, as well.

Here’s your formula for using the power word “Since”:

Since [Part 1], [Part 2].

And here’s the formula in more detail:

Since [Subject 1 + Verb 1], [Subject 2 + Verb 2].

You can use this formula whenever you hit the writer’s block. Here’s exactly how to break through.

Step 1. Simply start a new sentence by writing or typing the word “Since…”

Step 2. Now your brain is looking for the fact to state because it knows that it needs one. And it will find it:

“The weather is nice.”

“It’s hard to find a good plumber.”

Whatever is relevant to your essay and to the particular section in it – write it down.

Step 3. Now your brain is already on the lookout for what follows from that fact. So, just come up with the logical conclusion you’re making from it:

“Since the weather is nice, we could go to the beach.”

“Since it’s hard to find a good plumber, I might as well just fix the faucet myself.”

See how this works? Once you’ve practiced this a few times, your brain will know exactly what to do to produce quality material every time you start a new sentence with the power word “since.”

By the way, I created a video lesson on this power word. Here it is:

Make these power words your own and watch your grades go up!

There are very few other people who understand the significance of the information. Not that every educated person is intelligent, but every qualified person is educated . The statement might sound strange, but it is real. Almost anyone in today’s world is trained, yet they don’t have an understanding of the issue they have learned.

Weapons or bombs may not make a country secure but knowledge.

It is simple as well as simplistic to attribute this to the abundant natural resources as well as the surplus amount of new technologies if you look at America’s rise to prominence during most of the previous war era. We need to remember how these innovations came across and how they are used for a successful end.

Essay on Knowledge is Power

Knowledge means understanding of something such as facts, information, description and skills. It is the source of power to man and this distinguishes him from other creatures of the universe. Though man is physically weaker than many animals, for he cannot see as far as an eagle, nor carry heavy loads as some animals. Nevertheless he is the most powerful creature on earth. This power basically comes to him from knowledge not from physical strength. ‘Knowledge is power’ means that a man has education and a complete control on his life by using the strength of knowledge.

This means a person has the resources to express his views dynamically and make intelligent decisions based on his every day situations, awareness and understanding.

This doesn’t make a man powerful. A man is said to be powerful when he uses his knowledge to mobilize in the right direction. When a man has the ability or capacity to act or perform effectively with his knowledge then he gains Power.

FAQs on Knowledge is Power Essay

1. How Do You Define Knowledge?

Knowledge means understanding of facts, information, description and skills. It refers to awareness of something gained by education or experience. Here are the three different types of knowledge:

Explicit Knowledge: It refers to the type of knowledge that can be easily documented, stored, curated, and accessed. For example, information available in textbooks, the internet, etc.

Implicit Knowledge: The practical application of explicit knowledge is known as implicit knowledge. For example, how to drive a car or how to swim.

Tacit Knowledge: Any knowledge gained from personal experiences and context is known as tacit knowledge. For example, body language, leadership, humour, etc.

2. Why is Knowledge Considered Powerful?

Knowledge is powerful because a man can mobilize his life into the right direction. Knowledge can be both creator and destructive of our society. Through knowledge only, one can differentiate between right and wrong and make an informed decision. It also helps you plan your future and takes you on the path to success. With more knowledge, you will be able to overcome your weaknesses and gain more self-confidence. It encourages a positive attitude towards life and keeps you motivated to survive and thrive in the real world.

3. Mention Two Benefits Of Knowledge.

Knowledge is something that you gain throughout your life. It comes with an infinite number of benefits and keeps you on the right track. Knowledge encourages you to act morally and help others in any way possible. Moreover, it boosts your confidence to face any difficulty without being dependent on others. The two benefits of knowledge are:

Knowledge shapes our personality and behavior with others.

Knowledge with proper education can provide better governance to a nation.

4. Why is Less Knowledge Dangerous?

Less knowledge or half knowledge is very dangerous as it leads a man to a benighted condition for the rest of his life. He will never be able to excel in any field to the fullest. Less knowledge can mislead a person into making wrong decisions that have a negative impact on his/her life. Usually, people with less knowledge are only aware of the major aspects of a subject. What Does “Knowledge is Power” Mean?

Knowledge is Power is a proverb. It means that knowledge is more powerful than any type of physical strength. Knowledge empowers people to achieve great results. A knowledgeable person is respected in society. From the annals of history, we can see that great scholars and preachers like Aristotle and Swami Vivekananda are remembered even today. Good teachers and professors are still admired in society as they have ample knowledge that they share with students. With good knowledge and hard work, it is never too late to amass wealth to become so powerful.

To understand ‘knowledge is power’ more clearly, let’s take an example. Suppose a group of people get lost in a dark jungle, and only one of them knows the path out of the woods. So, he will show the path to others, and the rest of them will follow him. So, knowledge here made him win and gained him the power to lead the group members. In a similar way, society can also be taken as a jungle. In society, people get power with knowledge. Everyone silences to the knowledgeable person in society, and no one follows an ignorant person.

Relationship between Knowledge and Power

The sloka from Sanskrit exemplifies the greatness of education or knowledge. It clearly states the relationship between knowledge and power:

विद्यां ददाति विनयं,

विनयाद् याति पात्रताम्।

पात्रत्वात् धनमाप्नोति,

धनात् धर्मं ततः सुखम्॥

Vidya Dadati Vinayam,

Vinaya yaati Patrataam |

Patratvad Dhanamaapnoti,

Dhanaad Dharamam Tatah Sukham ||

The meaning of shloka is that through learning/knowledge, we get humility. Through humility, we get worthiness. From worthiness, we get wealth. From wealth, we do good deeds, and good deeds give us happiness. In simple words, it means that knowledge helps an individual to grow in society. It makes a person humble and disciplined. With humility and proper discipline, a person gets the height of achievement in life. With the achievement of success, a person is termed as powerful in society.

Knowledge is a very powerful tool which can be used in our daily life to improve ourselves, thereby, society and nation. It comes after many experiences. Sometimes a bad experience also teaches a very important lesson in life.

Power Verbs for Essays (With Examples)

By The ProWritingAid Team

essay power verbs

Adding power verbs to your academic paper will improve your reader’s experience and bring more impact to the arguments you make.

While the arguments themselves are the most important elements of any successful academic paper, the structure of those arguments and the language that is used influence how the paper is received.

Academic papers have strict formal rules, but as long as these are followed, there is still plenty of scope to make the key points of the paper stand out through effective use of language and more specifically, the effective use of power verbs.

Power verbs are verbs that indicate action and have a more positive and confident tone. Using them brings strength and confidence to the arguments you are making, while also bringing variation to your sentences and making your writing more interesting to the reader.

The best academic papers will use such verbs to support their arguments or concepts, so it is important that your paper contains at least three power verbs.

ProWritingAid will check your writing for power verbs and will notify you if you have less than three throughout your whole academic paper.

Power Verbs Boost Ideas

Examples of power verbs.

Academic papers of all disciplines are often filled with overlong and complicated sentences that are attempting to convey specific ideas and concepts. Active and powerful verbs are useful both to the reader and the author of the paper.

For the reader who is trying to tackle these ideas and concepts, the power verbs provide clarity and purpose. Compare the following sentences:

  • This paper will say that there were two reasons for the start of the civil war.
  • This paper asserts that there were two reasons for the start of the civil war.

Clearly the second sentence is more confident, direct, and authoritative because it has replaced the dull ‘says’ with ‘asserts.’ For the writer, the power verb expresses confidence in the idea being presented.

The following are examples of power verbs that are useful in academic writing, both for supporting an argument and for allowing you to vary the language you use.

Power Verbs for Analysis: appraise, define, diagnose, examine, explore, identify, interpret, investigate, observe.

Power Verbs to Introduce a Topic: investigate, outline, survey, question, feature.

Power Verbs to Agree with Existing Studies: indicate, suggest, confirm, corroborate, underline, identify, impart, maintain, substantiate, support, validate, acknowledge, affirm, assert.

Power Verbs to Disagree with Existing Studies: reject, disprove, debunk, question, challenge, invalidate, refute, deny, dismiss, disregard, object to, oppose.

Power Verbs to Infer: extract, approximate, surmise, deduce.

Power Verbs for Cause and Effect : impacts, compels, generates, incites, influences, initiates, prompts, stimulates, provokes, launches, introduces, advances.

Legal Power Verbs: sanctions, consents, endorses, disallows, outlaws, prohibits, precludes, protects, bans, licenses, authorizes.

Power Verbs that Say: convey, comment, state, establish, elaborate, identify, propose.

Power Verbs that Show: reveal, display, highlight, depict, portray, illustrate.

Whatever founder mode consists of, it's pretty clear that it's going to break the principle that the CEO should engage with the company only via his or her direct reports. "Skip-level" meetings will become the norm instead of a practice so unusual that there's a name for it. And once you abandon that constraint there are a huge number of permutations to choose from.

For example, Steve Jobs used to run an annual retreat for what he considered the 100 most important people at Apple, and these were not the 100 people highest on the org chart. Can you imagine the force of will it would take to do this at the average company? And yet imagine how useful such a thing could be. It could make a big company feel like a startup. Steve presumably wouldn't have kept having these retreats if they didn't work. But I've never heard of another company doing this. So is it a good idea, or a bad one? We still don't know. That's how little we know about founder mode. ]

Obviously founders can't keep running a 2000 person company the way they ran it when it had 20. There's going to have to be some amount of delegation. Where the borders of autonomy end up, and how sharp they are, will probably vary from company to company. They'll even vary from time to time within the same company, as managers earn trust. So founder mode will be more complicated than manager mode. But it will also work better. We already know that from the examples of individual founders groping their way toward it.

Indeed, another prediction I'll make about founder mode is that once we figure out what it is, we'll find that a number of individual founders were already most of the way there — except that in doing what they did they were regarded by many as eccentric or worse. ]

Curiously enough it's an encouraging thought that we still know so little about founder mode. Look at what founders have achieved already, and yet they've achieved this against a headwind of bad advice. Imagine what they'll do once we can tell them how to run their companies like Steve Jobs instead of John Sculley.

[ ] The more diplomatic way of phrasing this statement would be to say that experienced C-level execs are often very skilled at managing up. And I don't think anyone with knowledge of this world would dispute that.

[ ] If the practice of having such retreats became so widespread that even mature companies dominated by politics started to do it, we could quantify the senescence of companies by the average depth on the org chart of those invited.

[ ] I also have another less optimistic prediction: as soon as the concept of founder mode becomes established, people will start misusing it. Founders who are unable to delegate even things they should will use founder mode as the excuse. Or managers who aren't founders will decide they should try to act like founders. That may even work, to some extent, but the results will be messy when it doesn't; the modular approach does at least limit the damage a bad CEO can do.

This act of compassion allows us to build a connection based on understanding and mutual respect.

By cultivating empathy, we can bridge the gap between different individuals and communities, fostering a sense of unity and solidarity. Empathy helps us recognize the humanity in others, regardless of their background or circumstances, and promotes a culture of kindness and inclusivity.

Through empathy, we not only show compassion towards those in need but also create a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and understood. It is through empathy that we can truly make a difference in the lives of others and build a more compassionate society.

Spreading Positivity Through Kindness

One of the most powerful ways to help others is by spreading positivity through acts of kindness. Kindness has the remarkable ability to brighten someone’s day, lift their spirits, and create a ripple effect of happiness in the world.

Simple gestures like giving a compliment, lending a helping hand, or sharing a smile can make a significant impact on someone’s life. These acts of kindness not only benefit the recipient but also bring a sense of fulfillment and joy to the giver.

When we choose to spread positivity through kindness, we contribute to building a more compassionate and caring society. By showing empathy and understanding towards others, we create a supportive environment where people feel valued and respected.

Kindness is contagious and has the power to inspire others to pay it forward, creating a chain reaction of goodwill and compassion. By incorporating acts of kindness into our daily lives, we can make a positive difference and help create a better world for all.

Creating a Ripple Effect

When we extend a helping hand to others, we set off a chain reaction that can have a profound impact on the world around us. Just like a stone thrown into a calm pond creates ripples that spread outward, our acts of compassion can touch the lives of many, inspiring them to do the same.

By showing kindness and empathy, we not only make a difference in the lives of those we help but also create a ripple effect that can lead to positive change in our communities and beyond. A small gesture of kindness can ignite a spark of hope in someone’s heart, motivating them to pay it forward and spread compassion to others.

Each act of generosity and care has the power to create a ripple effect that can ripple outwards, reaching far beyond our immediate circles. As more and more people join in this chain of kindness, the impact multiplies, creating a wave of positivity that can transform the world one small act of kindness at a time.

Building a Stronger Community

One of the key benefits of helping others is the positive impact it can have on building a stronger community. When individuals come together to support one another, whether it’s through acts of kindness, volunteering, or simply being there for someone in need, it fosters a sense of unity and connection. This sense of community helps to create a supportive and caring environment where people feel valued and respected.

By helping others, we also set an example for those around us, inspiring others to also lend a hand and contribute to the well-being of the community. This ripple effect can lead to a chain reaction of kindness and generosity that can ultimately make the community a better place for everyone.

Furthermore, when people feel supported and cared for by their community, they are more likely to be happier and healthier, both mentally and physically. This sense of belonging and connection can help to reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness, and can improve overall well-being.

In conclusion, building a stronger community through helping others is essential for creating a more positive and caring society. By coming together and supporting one another, we can create a community that is resilient, compassionate, and unified.

essay on power word

“Black Vote, Black Power,”  a collaboration between Keith Boykin and Word In Black,  examines the issues, the candidates, and what’s at stake for Black America in the 2024 presidential election.

Here we go again. A handful of rappers, celebrities, and instigators out here are discouraging Black people from voting or trying to convince us that our vote doesn’t matter because both candidates are the same. Don’t believe them.

Every four years, a few vocal people — who rarely, if ever, use their voices to mobilize their followers to engage in specific political action — suddenly crawl out of the woodwork to spread misinformation about the next presidential election.

RELATED: Kamala Harris, for the Black People

This year is no different. I thought about posting weekly rebuttals, but rather than spending the next two months debunking these voices over and over again, I want to ask two questions.

First, what’s their strategy to achieve their goals? Assuming you agree with everything they want to do, how do they propose to get it passed through our divided Congress, signed by the President into law, and upheld by a Republican-dominated Supreme Court that now considers any race-specific remedy to be illegal or unconstitutional?

RELATED: 10 Big Lies Trump and the Republicans Tell About Kamala Harris

And second, if they had some genius strategy, where were they the last four years when Republican lawmakers and judges:

• blocked the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act

• blocked the John Lewis Voting Rights Act

• ended affirmative action

• halted Black farmers’ relief

• restricted a venture capital fund for Black women

• outlawed minority business grants

• erased Black congressional districts

• banned Black books

• banned Black history classes,

• closed DEI offices,

• refused to indict the officers who killed Breonna Taylor,

• ousted Black lawmakers in Tennessee,

• arrested Black people for voting in Florida, and

• banned civil rights groups in Georgia from providing food and water to people standing in long voting lines?

Many of us have been playing defense without a full bench the last three quarters, and we could have used some help from all the new celebrity players showing up in the fourth quarter who want to change the playbook.

essay on power word

As Malcolm X said, “ Show me in the white community where a singer is a white leader .” Yes, celebrities have a valuable supporting role to play, but they don’t get to show up two months before an election, ignore the work of Black thought leaders, and demand a meeting with a presidential candidate like they’re some official spokesman for Black America.

So, instead of spending the next eight weeks responding to every lie about Kamala Harris, I propose 10 constructive things we can do to help advance our political agenda well into the future.

Ten Things We Can Do

  • Get informed. Follow the news. Take a class. Become a critical thinker and more sophisticated consumer of information. I read dozens of news sources every day. You don’t have to read that many, but don’t rely on one source for all your news. Review multiple, credible sources.
  • Verify the information you share. Learn to spot misinformation. And try not to forward fake news. Fact-checkers like Daniel Dale , Snopes.com , Factcheck.org , and Politifact try to debunk misinformation, but sometimes they make mistakes or can’t keep up. That’s why you need to know your sources. Media outlets like Fox News, the New York Post, Newsmax, TownHall, the National Review, and the Wall Street Journal editorial page have a distinct right-wing political bias that favors Trump and the Republicans. Also, rappers, athletes, and celebrities have every right to share their opinions, but they’re not always the most reliable sources for information about government and politics.
  • Vote. Election Day is November 5, but some states require you to register weeks before then. Go to Vote.org today to find the voter registration deadline in your state. If you think you’re already registered, know that Republicans are trying to challenge and purge inactive voters. So check to make sure your name has not been removed from the rolls.
  • Attend local government meetings . Many of the decisions that affect us, including where liquor stores and pollution sites are built and which books are banned in schools, are made at local public meetings that very few people bother to attend. Go there and speak up.
  • Volunteer. Campaigns are always looking for people to make phone calls and knock on doors. Drop by the local campaign office, sign up to host an event, put up yard signs, or become a poll watcher. This is especially important if you live in one of the seven battleground states that will determine the election: Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona, and Nevada.
  • Donate. If you’re not invested in the presidential election, find a candidate you do support and contribute to their campaign. This year, we have 435 House members, 34 Senators , 11 governors’ races , nine lieutenant governor seats, 10 attorneys general, seven secretaries of state, and thousands of lower-level offices up for election in November. Unlike the presidential campaign, many of these candidates never get the attention and resources they need to win. Your money could make all the difference.
  • Don’t Reinvent the Wheel . Support organizations that are already doing the work. Groups like Color of Change and the NAACP are developing important policy goals and working to implement them.
  • Lobby your elected officials. The president can make some critical unilateral decisions for the country, but most government decisions that affect your day-to-day life are made by Congress, your state legislature, your county commissioners, your city council, your zoning board, and your school board. Do you know these officials? Visit their offices. Call them up. Write them letters. Let them know what issues you care about. The phone number for the U.S. Capitol switchboard is (202) 224-3121.
  • Run for office. If you’re not satisfied with the people in government, show them how it’s done. Run for school board, town council, state representative, or even Congress. Don’t expect somebody else to do it for you. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.
  • Start a PAC. This is one of the most difficult tasks on the list, but it can be done. If none of the other steps work for you, you can start your own political action committee to fight for the causes you believe in. You can even create a legislative scorecard to give ratings to members of Congress based on the issues you care about.

There are dozens of other constructive things you can do, so don’t be limited by this list. But remember this guiding principle. Cynicism is not a strategy, and apathy is not a solution.
