I am an assistant professor in the Centre for Education & Technology for Education (CETE) at IIT Jodhpur. My research lies at the intersection of education, technology, and design, with a focus on the following broad areas: Learning Analytics (LA) for Teachers, Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL), Teacher Professional Development (TPD), and Engineering Education . I take a pragmatic worldview and primarily use mixed methods, user-centered and co-design methods, and statistical methods. My research broadly encompasses the following aspects:

Exploring, designing, and evaluating analytics to close the feedback loop to learners and teachers across different teaching-learning settings

Unpacking the role of factors such as teachers' beliefs, attitudes, and cultural context s in their pedagogical decision-making when using LA tools

Exploring and designing ways for teachers to integrate technology effectively into the teaching-learning process.

Investigating the effect of flipped classroom design factors and teacher-related factors on the effectiveness of the flipped classroom model.

IIT Bombay: 23 Answered Questions

What was the toughest course you took at iit bombay.

There is a course called CS207 Discrete Structures taught by Professor Ajit Diwan . It was related to Discrete Mathematics - Number Theory, Graph Theory, Combinatorics, Sets, and Groups, and was one of the most difficult courses my friend came across.

Professor Diwan is well known for his highly challenging problems and course material. During his lectures, he delivers a lot of information based on principles. For math lovers, his classes are an absolute delight.

He refrains from conducting more than one exam a month. However, the level of difficulty of the exam is high. The questions look very complicated but when one ponders upon them, they don’t seem that difficult.

The exams were extremely difficult to the extent that the passing cutoff was 7 out of 100 marks . Despite the entire batch consisting of JEE toppers, a lot of them were not able to make it to the cutoff.

I am a first-year BDes student at IIT Bombay. Design is one of the fastest-growing departments of our institution. My seniors achieved 71% placements in 2023. Top companies like Microsoft, Samsung R&D, Flipkart, Uber etc. offered campus placements to B.Des students in the previous year.

Here is a comparison table for IIT Bombay BDes vs IIT Guwahati BDes:

#4 (Overall)

#9 (Overall)

As evident from the above statistics, the B.Des programs at IIT Bombay and IIT Guwahati are equally good.

But IIT Bombay is located in one of the major Indian cities. The advantage of opting for B.Des programme at IIT Bombay is that you’ll get much better off campus opportunities. Moreover, Bombay is closer to other important cities like Hyderabad, Bengaluru, etc.

Thus, I would recommend you join the B.Des program at IIT Bombay.

How is the operation research MSc and PhD dual degree in IIT Bombay?

Jasmine Grover

The course Operations Research offered at IIT Bombay is an integrated Ph.D. course.

Duration: The course duration is 6 years, while the minimum is 5 years. It depends on how much time you take to complete your PhD. You can even extend it more than 6 years but won’t be receiving any stipend for the same. Another option is to opt out of an MSc degree after 3 years.

Compensation: Students are paid around INR 6000/- month for 2 years and then INR 25000 from third year.

Department: This course is offered by the IEOR( Industrial Engineering and Operations Research) department of IIT Bombay which is considered the best in India.

Courses: The courses offered are Industrial Engineering related and some pure operations research related. There are a large number of project courses since this is a research-oriented course. After successfully completing the first 3 years you get admission to a Ph.D. program provided that you qualify certain prerequisites.

Purpose of the course: The course targets students who are interested in research and stimulate them to pursue a career in Operations Research. Some students, however, instead sit for placements after the third year with an MSc degree and don’t go for Ph.D.

Placements: There is no use to mention placement as most of the small batch size opts out of placements to pursue PhD.

Suitability: The course is most suitable for those who are sure of kick-starting a career in research. You get to work on various projects under the guidance of great professors.

Selecting the best PhD advisor is very necessary to ensure a good career. The same professor then gives you a PhD in very less duration or even drags the time unnecessarily. The best part is that you don't need to clear any PhD entrance like UGC CSIR and can easily get a PhD admit with few formalities and end up with a doctorate degree in less than 6 years.

Can we do a part time PhD in IIT Bombay?

Yes, you can definitely do a part time PhD in IIT Bombay. All you need to do is apply as an external category candidate.

Major highlights of part-time PhD in external category

  • A supervisor from IIT B is assigned
  • A supervisor from outside is selected
  • Coursework depends on the qualifying degree (B.Tech, M.Tech, MBA, etc.) and the criteria varies accordingly.
  • For SJMSOM, IIT Bombay- A minimum of 52 credits is required if the candidate is not having an MBA (Not PGDM) and 40 credit is required if the candidate is having an MBA.
  • You can go and attend classes and don’t have to necessarily leave the job
  • Once the course period is completed, you get admission as a PhD Candidate and you can meet your guide as per your need.

Applications for part time PhD are accepted twice a year for Autumn and Spring Semester.

(The branch-wise placement stats for IIT Bombay are not present)

Both IIT Bombay and IIT Guwahati are highly renowned engineering colleges. However, IIT Bombay ranks much higher on a national and global ranking scale.

Moreover, IIT Bombay is located in the Financial Capital of India. This allows its students a much higher industry exposure. Additionally, Bombay has easy connectivity to major cities like Bengaluru, which further benefits its students.

Because of these reasons, I would recommend you choose the 5-year Electrical Engineering course at IIT Bombay over B.Tech CSE at IIT Guwahati.

What are IIT Bombay fees for an MBA?

The first-year fee for pursuing an MBA from IIT Bombay is around INR 4,29,300. To get admission students must sit for CAT or equivalent entrance exam. IIT Bombay has a batch capacity of around 150 students. Science IIT Bombay is situated in the financial capital of the country, so it is easier for the students to land opportunities. Even the curriculum is very well structured offering students expected academic insights along with it offering the students with industry related insights which help them in their professional development and make them ready for their professional journey.

Doctoral Programme

About the programme.

The Ashank Desai Centre for Policy Studies (ADCPS) at IIT Bombay was conceived as a centre for research, education, training, and practice. In order to meet a growing need and demand for policy professionals in India, it was thought necessary that ADCPS have a Master’s in Public Policy (MPP) programme as well as a PhD programme. ADCPS launched its PhD in Public Policy (MPP) programme from the Autumn semester of 2017.

ADCPS envisions myriad ways in which its PhD and MPP programmes and graduates from these programmes can contribute to IIT Bombay’s intellectual expansion as well as to India’s polity and society. The aim is to produce professionals or academics who seek to serve or lead in the interest of the public. These academic programmes will reflect the changing dynamics in today’s world and the need for policy to keep up with technological advancements, globalization, nuanced and complex public debates, and the growing trend of building rights based democracies. Policy can no longer be contained within the realm of government and bureaucracy; it has percolated into civil society, academic institutions, and the private sector. Through the programmes, ADCPS aims to give its students tools which are applicable in diverse situations and teach students how to adapt to various fields, contexts, or situations. Students of the programmes can then find themselves fitting into and contributing to the public or private sectors, working within the government, or in the not for profit/NGO sector. They may choose to work for large corporations as analysts or lobbyists, or may do policy research in IOs, think tanks, or universities. Finally, ADCPS in its academic programmes aims to capitalize on IIT Bombay’s existing institutional strengths and build a department that can be a hub for public policy research and expertise. ADCPS’s academic programmes integrates public policy, social sciences, and technology.

We encourage international students to apply for the IIT Bombay institute TA fellowships for our PhD programs. More details about this can be found here

During the first two semesters, the focus is on classroom courses. This includes compulsory core and electives courses. Details of the course structure can be found below. Additionally, PhD scholars are expected to complete an eight-week internship at a relevant organisation after Semester II. This field exposure is expected to help students refine their research approach and build networks for their projects. The rest of the PhD programme is dedicated to conducting research towards the PhD thesis.

The Ashank Desai Centre for Policy Studies (ADCPS) at IIT Bombay is inviting applications for its PhD  programme in Public Policy f or  the Autumn semester of  2022 . Please visit the IIT Bombay website here for detailed advertisement, application form, information brochure.  The application must be submitted online

Programme Structure

The programme is structured to keep half of the credit load in the Policy area, and the other half is to be divided between (i) the courses in the sectoral area of interest e.g. water, energy, gender, communication etc. and (ii) Institute electives which would complement the policy courses and the domain courses, taking into account the student’s background. The credit load will be designed to suit this requirement.

Each student will have to indicate the domain area e.g. water, energy, gender, information economy and others, in which s/he wishes to carry out doctoral research on policy related aspects. Ideally the student will have a guide and a co-guide–one having expertise in the policy arena and the other in the concerned domain. Candidates are strongly encouraged to identify relevant faculty members in any research area that they are interested in.

Research Areas

A candidate must identify either one or two of the following areas of APCPS Policy research and indicate as such in the research proposal (please carefully read www.cps.iitb.ac.in/research for elaboration):

i. Digital Societies and Governance ii. Social Policy (Education, Ageing, Identity) iii. Technology and Policy  iv. Urban Policy v. Water, Sanitation, Energy, Climate Change

IIT Bombay Minimum Package Drops To 4 Lakh, No Jobs For 25% Graduates

Iit bombay package: experts warn that the job crisis may affect up to 50 per cent of the 15 lakh engineering graduates this year..

IIT Bombay Minimum Package Drops To 4 Lakh, No Jobs For 25% Graduates

IIT Bombay has released the placement report for 2023-24 academic year. The report reveals that 25% of students did not secure jobs through campus placements. Despite the intense studies and tough competition, some students received offers with annual packages as low as 4 lakh rupees.

A total of 1,979 students registered for placements, with 1,650 getting job offers, and 1,475 accepting them. This year's placement rate was 75 per cent, down from 82 per cent last year. While the number of companies recruiting increased by 12 per cent, many students are blaming the weak global economy for the drop in offers.

Experts warn that the job crisis may affect up to 50 per cent  of the 15 lakh engineering graduates this year. Despite the challenging scenario, IIT Bombay students remain hopeful for better opportunities ahead.

In the 2023-2024 placement session, a total of 78 international jobs were offered from different firms based in Japan, Taiwan, Europe, UAE, Singapore, USA, Netherlands, and Hong Kong. This has been an increase of 65 from the previous year. The session saw participation from multiple sectors such as Core Engineering, Information Technology, Software programming, Research and Development, Consulting, Finance, Banking, High-end Technology and Technical Services.

Explaining the gap in the number of registered students and those who secured jobs, IIT Bombay highlights, "Some of the 435 deregistered students want to pursue higher studies, such as MS/MTech/PhD and MBA courses, while others opted for entrepreneurship or civil services, and did not appear or had minimal participation in the placement drive. Due to the war in Ukraine and the subdued global economy, we saw fewer international recruiters."
