The Changing Role of Urdu News Media with Digital Communication in Pakistan

The growing use of digital media has influenced significantly the communication channels of society during recent years in the globe. The media and communication in Pakistan is transforming with information technology. The marvelous boost of digital media devices has changed the communication channels. With digital media revolution, the people in society who formerly had no chance to participate, now they have a great opportunity of to contribute. They can give feedback on news content, comment on stories and share information. If we talk about Urdu news in Pakistan, technology has not left it unchanged. The great revolution in technological field has modified the way public receives information on various aspects. This research work will boost our understanding of how effects of fast spreading technological means have affected traditional modes of Urdu news. During the past decades, western world has got a great benefit from immense development in information communication technology. Furthermore, developing world is widely seen accepting access to internet computer and mobile phone technology. Today's media organizations are extensively using various technological sources. This study also explore the phenomenon of adoption of information technology, role played by media in this digital age and to address the global audience and news collection, influence of internet and extent of freedom of expression to which it has impacted todays media in accessing and delivering information. Though traditional modes of information have got a great jolt by new digital platform and have brought great opportunities for information gathering ofUrdu news in Pakistan.

Role of media in Pakistan

Media is playing great role in every society. It plays important role in setting agendas of public. We all are bombarded with so much information all the day. Electronic media, print media and social media are some common types of media. Print media is the oldest media in this history.

In Pakistan, media is working freely and independently. In case of electronic media there are a number of channels are working including news, sports and entertainment channels. It is the responsibility of media to highlight those issues which are good for the public and discourage unethical factors of the society. Sometimes media besides spreading the root causes of any issue, contributes to multiply wordings over some issue and crises. Media should be very sensitive while presenting its country towards the world. Our media tells the world what exactly we are, what are our norms, values and culture. Being an Islamic country, our media should represent us in a good way towards the world.

Media enhance the knowledge of public and communicates all the happenings to the public. Media industry of Pakistan is growing fast with much potential and seemingly bright future ahead.  Media should not use negative tools to increase their viewership.

Role of media in Pakistan is getting quite irresponsible; as there are so many talk shows and political debates on the screen all the time and sometimes they seems to be crossing their limits. Media should work in its limits and according to some rules and regulations. Besides spreading exaggeration, Pakistani media should resolve the matters with positive attitude. Media is supposed to be responsible for the present society, trends, norms, values and so on. People are what they see, around them. Media reflects the society and it is the responsibility of media to expose the country to the whole world.

Role of media in Pakistan cannot be neglected; Pakistani media relates dramas, movies, sports, news and entertainment and so many features to the people. Its dramas reflect society and happenings and issues in the society not only to the people of Pakistan but also to the whole world, news channels alarm the people about all the current happenings, within and outside the country.

Media has played very important role in reshaping, and changing the people in Pakistan. It has revealed the facts to the people about crimes and social issues and also informed the people about the issues outside their country and most importantly, media has shown the behavior of other countries to the Pakistan, The media mainly television has become the main storytelling vehicle and the journalists have become the key players in legend making and identity building. Professional journalists are responsible to create a sense of belonging and to encourage the youth of Pakistan to behave like a responsible Pakistani.

Somehow media, on the name of freedom of press, is completely going in a new direction. There is a great competition among the channels and it has gone to fierce conditions, that they have starting to use negative tools, too increase their viewership.

Media has been thinking to be a positive and sophisticated tool to talk about image building. When something comes about the national interests, it is the responsibility of media to handle the situations and prosperity of the country. Media is considered to be a watchdog in a democratic country.  No doubt media is doing fine work with positive approach towards the people and society. It’s the requirement of time that our media should work for the positive and real soft image of Pakistan.

Media, its influence on urdu and society.

The manipulation of media and its ever-increasing influence on society has been a subject of many research studies.

However, the scholarship in the Urdu language has remained limited to literary, historical and religious studies and areas such as media studies got very little attention of it.

That is why a book in Urdu discussing issues related to the media and especially India’s contemporary Urdu media, is a boon for both general readers and students of mass communications.

Suhail Anjum is a well-known India journalist and scholar of Urdu. He has been studying media for many years now and his analysis of the subject is usually objective and detached.

His books Media: roop behroop (Media: guise and disguise) and Maghribi media aur Islam (Western media and Islam) are testimony to the statement.

His third book Media, Urdu aur jadeed rujhaanaat (Media, Urdu and modern trends) is yet another attempt at understanding Indian media vis-a-vis Urdu, Islam and modern trends. Although the book had appeared a couple of years ago, I could get it only a couple of weeks ago and I feel that students of mass communication at our universities should at least know about it, even if they cannot read it, because availability of Indian books in Pakistan is becoming harder day by day despite all the feel-good statements of both the governments.

Had it not been for some booksellers from Lahore, reading new Indian books would have remained a dream.

The book is divided into three sections. The first section discusses different aspects of the media and the range is quite wide. Articles in this section deal with covering terrorism, information technology revolution, electronic media and obscenity in reality shows.

The second section covers topics related to the media and Urdu. It surveys and reviews some burning issues India’s Urdu journalism facing today. The first article in this section discusses some trends with reference to the standard of the language used on TV channels. For instance, Mr Anjum writes about a discussion in a TV programme on the future of Urdu and Hindi languages telecast a few years ago. Ashok Vajpai, a leading Hindi writer, addressing the writers of Urdu said that it was a misconception that Hindi was doing well in India. He said that the situation for Hindi was no better for Hindi than it was for Urdu as the language used by Hindi language channels was not ‘pure’ Hindi.

On the other hand, according to Mr Anjum, journalists and writers of Urdu complained that Hindi-language channels were damaging Urdu by using Urdu words incorrectly. He carried out a sample survey to find out the percentage of Urdu words used on Hindi channels. It showed that the use of Urdu words on Hindi channels ranged between 15 to 25 per cent. Another article in this section based on empirical research is titled the journalism of the religious schools (madressahs or seminaries). There are some more invaluable articles, too. In a nutshell, this section provides the reader with a vivid picture of contemporary Indian Urdu journalism and issues related to it. The third section discusses the media and affairs of Muslims. An article in this section elaborates on the image of Muslims as presented by the Indian media.

Aside from the distorted image of Muslims portrayed in print and electronic media, the article also includes a reference to Bollywood films. According to Mr Anjum, Muslim characters in Indian films are too far away from reality. They are shown wearing ankle-length pyjamas, beard and brimless caps. They would be either ‘jihadist’, ‘terrorists’ or some criminal.

They would not have anything humane about them and their favourite pastime would be smuggling, crime, bloodshed and inhumane acts.

They would be gangsters or dons. Rarely would you find in these films a Muslim character that is educated or a professional.

Suhail Anjum has tried to be unemotional and rational in his analyses and most of his arguments are based on observation and research. Prof Shafe Qidvai of Aligarh Muslim University, mass communication department in his introduction to the book has rightly mentioned that Suhail Anjum has taken full care of research methodology for this empirical study.

Rizwanullah in the other introduction to the book has written that the purpose of this book of Suhail Anjum’s is to understand the relation between Indian Muslims and the contemporary media.

The book has been published by Delhi’s Educational Publishing House.

اس محیر العقول ایجاد کا بیج امریکہ میں بویا گیا۔شروع میں انٹرنیٹ کے ذریعے یونیورسٹیوں کی تعلیم و تحقیقی ڈیٹا کا تبادلہ ہوتا تھا اور یہ جدید نظام امریکہ اور لندن میں متعارف تھا۔انٹرنیٹ پیغام رسائی کا جدید ترین اور تیز ترین ذریعہ ہے۔آپ دنیا کے کسی بھی خطے میں ہوں،آپ کے خطوط، پیغامات، آپ کی تحریریں تصاویر فوری طور پر ایک جگہ سے دوسری جگہ منتقل ہوسکتی ہیں۔آپ اپنے گھر بیٹھ کر امریکہ یا برطانیہ کے کسی اخبار یا وہاں پر موجود کسی کتاب کا مطالعہ کر سکتے ہیں۔

جس طرح پرندوں کو کسی ملک میں جانے کے لیے پاسپورٹ اور ویزے کی ضرورت نہیں ہوتی اس طرح انٹرنیٹ کے ذریعے ویزے یا پاسپورٹ کے صرف ایک بٹن دبانے سے دنیا کی کسی بھی شہر علاقے سے رابطہ کیا جاسکتا ہے۔

کسی زمانے میں کمپنیوں کو اپنی مصنوعات بین الاقوامی منڈیوں میں متعارف کروانے کے لیے مہینے اور سال لگتے تھے۔اب انٹرنیٹ میں نئی نئی مصنوعات کی خبریں بین الاقوامی منڈیوں تک فوراً پہنچا دیتا ہے۔اب کسی کاروباری شخص کو کاروبار کے سلسلے میں سفر کرنے کی ضرورت نہیں۔اب تو وہ اپنے ڈرائنگ روم میں ناشتہ کرتے ہوئے دنیا کے کسی بھی مارکیٹ سے رابطہ کر سکتا ہے۔انٹرنیٹ کے ذریعے وہ نہ صرف مال دیکھ سکتا ہے بلکہ وہ حسب ضرورت خرید کر منگوا بھی سکتا ہے۔

ایک زمانہ تھا کہ پیغام رسانی کے لیے کبوتروں کی خدمات لی جاتی تھیں۔پھر گھوڑ سواروں کے ذریعے پیغامات پہنچائے جانے لگے۔بعد ازاں محکمہ ڈاک قائم ہوا اور خطوط کے ذریعے پیغامات ایک جگہ سے دوسری جگہ پہنچائے جانے لگے۔اب ای میل کے ذریعے پوری دنیا سمٹ کر آپ کے گھر میں آگئی ہے۔آپ کمپیوٹر پر خط لکھیے اور اسے دنیا کے کسی بھی خطے میں بھیج دیجئے۔آپ جس شخص کو ای میل کر رہے ہوں، اس کا ای میل ایڈریس آپ کے پاس ہونا چاہیے۔اب پیغامات ہفتوں، دنوں اور مہینوں میں نہیں پہنچتے بلکہ یہ ہوا کہ دوش پر منٹوں میں پہنچ جاتے ہیں۔

ایف-ٹی-پی کے ذریعے کسی بھی کمپیوٹر سے فائل کا حصول ممکن ہے۔بعض اوقات ہمیں پرانا ریکارڈ حاصل کرنے کے لئے کسی لائبریری، عجائب گھر یا اخبارات ورسائل سے رجوع کرنا ہوتا ہے اسی طرح ریکارڈ فائل کے لیے ہم ایف-ٹی-پی سے رجوع کرسکتے ہیں.آپ اس کی وساطت سے بغیر پہچان کروائے کوئی چیز اپنے کمپیوٹر میں منتقل کر سکتے ہیں۔علاوہ ازیں آپ اس کے ممبر بھی بن سکتے ہیں۔

اس کے ذریعے آپ اپنا پاس ورڈ سیٹ کریں اور یہاں بیٹھ کر دوسرے ملک میں موجود کمپیوٹر چلا سکتے ہیں۔ تعلیم کے حوالے سے دنیا کی مشہور یونیورسٹیوں آکسفورڈ اور ہارورڈ نے انٹرنیٹ کے ذریعہ مختلف کورسس کا اجرا کیا ہے۔طلبہ اپنے پاس ورڈ کے ذریعے کمپیوٹر سے اپنے لیکچرز ڈاون لوڈ کرسکتے ہیں۔ان کورسس کے باقاعدہ امتحانات ہوتے ہیں اور پھر ان امتحانات میں کامیاب ہونے والے طلباء کو اسناد دی جاتی ہیں۔اب تعلیمی دنیا میں ایک انقلاب آ چکا ہے۔علم کے جو خزانے آنکھوں سے اوجھل تھے، اب ان خزانوں سے لوگ گھر بیٹھے مستفید ہو رہے ہیں۔آپ کہیں بھی رہتے ہوں تعلیم کے راستے میں سمندر، صحرا، جنگل اور ریگستان رکاوٹ نہیں بن سکتے۔ آپ انٹرنیٹ کے ذریعے کسی بھی علمی میکدے سے اپنا ساغر بھر سکتے ہیں۔اب ذہنوں میں کشادگی آچکی ہے اور سوچیں وسیع ہو چکی ہے۔اب پوری دنیا ایک گلوبل ولیج کی شکل اختیار کر چکی ہے۔

لاریب، انٹرنیٹ نے علم کی دنیا میں انقلاب برپا کر دیاہے۔انٹرنیٹ نے دوکاندار اور گاہک کے فاصلوں کو مٹا دیا ہے لیکن اس کے کچھ نقصانات بھی دیکھنے میں آ رہے ہیں۔ انٹرنیٹ کے سامنے بیٹھنے والا شخص اتنا سست الوجود ہوجاتا ہے کہ وہ دنیا ومافیا سے بےخبر صرف اسی کا ہوکر رہ جاتا ہے۔اس کی نظر میں زندگی صرف انٹرنیٹ کا نام ہے۔زندگی کے دیگر معاملات اور معمولات اس کے نزدیک بے معنی ہو جاتے ہیں۔اسے باہر کی دنیا سے کوئی سروکار نہیں ہوتا۔وہ اپنی دنیا میں مست اور محور رہتا ہے۔اس کی نیند پوری نہیں ہوتی۔بیٹھ بیٹھ کر اس کے وزن میں اضافہ ہوجاتا ہے۔بالآخر وہ اپنی صحت سے ہاتھ دھو بیٹھتا ہے۔

انٹرنیٹ کے ذریعے اخلاقی برائیاں جنم لے رہی ہیں۔نئی نسل انٹرنیٹ کا اندھا دھند استعمال کر رہی ہے۔اس کے ذریعے مخرب الاخلاق معلومات بھی حاصل نہیں ہوتی،جو نئی نسل کے اذہان پر منفی اثر ڈالتی ہیں۔ اس میں کوئی شک نہیں کہ انٹرنیٹ ہماری ضرورت بن چکا ہے۔زندگی کے ہر شعبے میں اس کی ضرورت محسوس ہوتی ہے۔ہمیں اس سے فائدہ اٹھانا چاہیے اور ہر شعبے میں ترقی کرنی چاہیے۔جس طرح دیگر ایجادات کے فوائد بھی ہیں اور نقصانات بھی، اسی طرح انٹرنیٹ کے فائدے بھی ہیں نقصانات بھی۔

اللہ تعالی نے ہر ذی شعور کو سوچنے سمجھنے کی صلاحیتوں سے نوازا ہے۔جو لوگ تعمیری سوچ رکھتے ہیں اور اپنی سوچ کو اعلیٰ مقاصد کے لیے استعمال کرتے ہیں، وہ کامیابی حاصل کرتے ہیں۔اس دنیا کے بازار ان لوگوں سے بھی بھرے نظر آتے ہیں، جو منفی سوچ کے مالک ہوتے ہیں اور برے منصوبے بناتے ہیں۔یہ اپنی تخریب کاریوں سے لوگوں کی زندگیوں کے چراغ گل کرتے ہیں۔اب یہ انسان پر منحصر ہے کہ اس نے کسی ایجاد سے فائدہ اٹھانا ہے یا نقصان۔
