How to Transfer Courses (Undergraduates)

Learn how to transfer outside course work to UC San Diego.

General Guidelines

Use the following general guidelines to make sure that your course units will transfer to UC San Diego:

  • Courses should not repeat material you have already completed
  • Courses should be taken in the proper sequence
  • Courses should be substantially similar to those offered by the University of California

Types of Institutions

Consider how the type of institution you attend impacts if the class is transferable.

  • Refer to the ASSIST website to determine course transferability
  • Follow the general guidelines listed above
  • Courses numbered between 1 and 199 are transferable
  • The institution must be regionally accredited
  • The institution must be recognized by the country’s Ministry of Education or higher-education authority
  • A US student planning to study abroad
  • A student holding an F1/J1 visa planning to study in countries other than your country of citizenship

Identify courses that you can transfer.

  • A grade of C- or better may be required by certain departments. Please check with your department for clarification.
  • Prior approvals for substitution of transfer courses for UCSD requirements are required by some colleges and departments. Ask your college or department advisor for additional information.
  • Writing courses are restricted at some colleges. Contact your College advisors to discuss options.
  • Use ASSIST , an online student-transfer information resource, to check approved lower-division courses taken at California community colleges.
  • See your college or department advisor for possible additional approximations or substitutions.

While we do not provide formal, written pre-evaluations or authorizations, we may review with you the proposed course work and the criteria we use in determining credit transferability. Should you wish for an Admissions Officer to consider your course selection with you prior to enrolling in the course, please stop by the Triton Center (1 st  floor, Student Services Center)  during business hours .

Transfer the course work:

  • Send transcripts by mail : You must order an official transcript from your academic institution which must be sent to us directly in a sealed envelope addressed as follows:

  • Send transcripts electronically through Parchment, a safe and secure method of requesting your official transcript(s). If your school is registered with Parchment to send electronic transcripts, please order transcripts through your school's website or create an account with Parchment directly. We also accept transcripts electronically through eTranscriptCA, Credential Solutions, eScripSafe, Scribbles, SCOIR, and National Student Clearinghouse if your academic institution is registered with these e-transcript vendors.
  • Please check whether your school utilizes these e-transcript vendors to send transcripts and order through your school's transcript ordering process. Make sure you select University of California San Diego in La Jolla, CA as the receiving school if you choose one of these e-transcript vendors. Some vendors may list our school as UC San Diego.
  • The final determination of transferability (including units and level) will be made only after the Office of Admissions receives the official transcript of your course work from the college or university you attended.
  • Transfer work for new incoming students will be evaluated by the Office of Admissions.
  • Transfer work for students who have completed their first quarter at UC San Diego will be evaluated by the Office of the Registrar. Allow up to 3 weeks after receipt of the official transcript for transfer credit to be evaluated and posted by the Office of the Registrar.
  • Check with your college or department for additional reviews or approvals of your transfer work once it’s been posted to your UC San Diego record.

How To Transfer Universities: Here’s What You Should Know

Transferring from one college to another isn’t always easy, but some schools feature transfer-friendly policies to help smooth the process. All potential transfer students should research the benefits and drawbacks of changing schools to make sure the decision aligns with their professional, educational and personal goals.

Though it can be a major change to uproot your life and move to a new campus or location, transferring between online colleges allows students to continue to learn from a distance. Either way, transferring can be worth it for students who feel unchallenged or otherwise unsatisfied at their current college.

This article explores how to transfer universities, including tips on financial aid and moving credits.

What Are the Steps to Transfer Universities?

Research your next school.

You may have a particular school in mind when looking to transfer universities, but you should still research a variety of schools to learn about the different programs available. Keep in mind that some institutions participate in reciprocity or articulation agreements, which allow students to easily transfer credits among participating schools.

Reciprocity agreements can function in a couple of different ways. Some four-year schools partner with community colleges to accept associate-level credits as transferred general education courses. Institutions may also maintain articulation agreements within college systems or geographic locations.

Other factors to research include tuition rates, degree offerings and campus culture. Online learners can focus more on tuition costs and coursework, but in-person learners might also consider aspects like athletics, student diversity and classroom accommodations, like labs.

Some schools limit the number of credits that transfer students can bring from past courses. Different schools may count credits differently, too—while most institutions use semester credits, some use the quarter system, which can complicate the process of transferring credits.

Also, make sure any school you consider is accredited. Accreditation is administered by third-party organizations to verify that schools provide high-quality education. Colleges often require transfer students to have completed their original credits with institutionally accredited schools.

Meet with a College Advisor

College advisors are there to help you. They can offer information on financial aid, credit transfer availability and resources for transfer students. These advisors may guide you toward schools with academic offerings that better align with your professional goals, or toward transfer-friendly partner colleges.

Advisors may not know the exact transfer policies for your prospective school, but they can contact admissions departments to conduct additional research. After starting at your new school, you can continue to meet with transfer advisors for additional help with registration and other services.

Discuss How Transferring May Affect Graduation Times

As you research prospective schools, make sure to see which of your existing classes would transfer. Not all schools honor all credits or classes for transfer, meaning you may have to retake certain courses and extend your graduation timeline.

Changing majors as a transfer student can also affect your time to graduate, as your new focus may require different coursework than your previous degree, thus reducing the likelihood of credit transfer.

Confirm Which Credits Can Transfer

Schools often provide credit transfer databases for students looking to change colleges. Along with reaching out to admissions advisors, you can use these databases to enter your existing coursework and cross-check equivalent credits with prospective institutions.

Different schools have different transfer policies, so always check each college’s transfer equivalency tool or database to compare arrangements.

Apply and Submit Your Transfer Credits

When applying to your new school, expect to provide transcripts of your previous coursework. At this time, you can indicate your intended transfer credits for the admissions department to assess. If necessary, provide support materials to clarify why your credits should transfer.

If after applying, some of your credits did not transfer, you can appeal the school’s decision by offering additional information on courses and their relevance. If you experience any delays while waiting for a response from your prospective school—it typically takes about four weeks for an admissions department to examine your credits and provide a response—follow up either by yourself or with help from your admissions advisor.

Don’t Forget to Apply for Financial Aid

Schools establish financial aid packages for all students who submit the FAFSA. The financial aid package from your current school will not transfer directly to your next school, meaning you may have to resubmit the FAFSA.

Transferring does not mean that you will lose financial aid , however—just know that each school calculates aid packages differently and may apply different deadlines and policies for funding. Start early, and make sure your FAFSA includes the school code for every institution you’re considering to ensure you receive aid package decisions from all of them.

You may then compare each school’s proposed financial aid package to your current aid package. Perform a holistic assessment of your finances to understand whether transferring is feasible. Communicate with financial aid advisors at your current and prospective schools to stay on top of any requirements or deadlines for funding.

Before applying, research any scholarships and grants available through your prospective colleges. Some schools even offer scholarships specifically for transfer students.

Is Transferring Online Schools the Same Process?

As long as both colleges hold accreditation, transferring colleges involves the same process whether you are moving between online schools or in-person institutions. Articulation agreements can provide smooth transfer between schools no matter their course delivery method.

Most online schools feature transfer-friendly policies since they often cater to working professionals and students who are returning to complete their degrees. Online programs may also be more accepting of transfer credits from alternative sources, including military training and professional experiences.

Changing from one online school to another can create fewer stressors with regard to relocation, commuting and paying room and board.

Students who have attended another college or university and want to transfer to CSULB can determine which course credit will transfer by reviewing the information below.

If you have only attended a California Community College (CCC):

California’s online system, Assist.org , helps you determine if courses taken at a CCC or UC will transfer to the CSU or UC systems. General education, major and department course equivalencies are available at CSULB.

Visit a Transfer or Career Center

Your community-college transfer and career centers can assist you in the transfer process; Transfer Center personnel can also provide you with information about majors and help you to explore career options.

Connect with a Community College Counselor

Your community-college counselor has valuable resources to help you plan your transfer to the CSU or UC systems. They can assist you with your educational plan and provide you with information on General Education Certification.

CSULB accepts only 70 transferable semester (105 quarter) units from community colleges.

If you have attended a Four-Year or Out-of-State Institution:

California’s online system, Assist.org , helps you determine if courses taken at a CCC or UC will transfer to the CSU or UC systems. General education, major and department course equivalencies are available at CSULB. *Not all four-year universities utilize ASSIST.

CSULB accepts only 70 transferable semester (105 quarter) units from community colleges, and 94 semester (141 quarter) units from other four-year accredited institutions toward the completion of your degree.

Regionally Accredited Four-Year Institutions

CSULB has articulation agreements with the CCCs, some CSU's and UC's. CSULB also has limited agreements with private and out-of-state institutions. If the school is a regionally accredited, four-year baccalaureate-degree granting institution, we can accept college level units/credits. Courses that are not formally articulated or not offered at CSULB can be given elective units/credits.

Accredited Institutions & Out-of-State Community Colleges

Accredited institution and out-of-state community-college course work will be evaluated on a course-by-course basis. Credit will be given to courses considered equivalent to those offered at CSULB. We recommend that students in this situation:

  • Attend a CCC before transferring to CSULB
  • Submit all transcripts to the community college for evaluation.

If the CCC considers the course transferable, CSULB may accept the course under the CCC articulation agreement.

ASSIST.org is the official course transfer and articulation system for California's public colleges and universities. It is best used in combination with seeing an advisor. It is intended to  help students and counselors work together to establish an appropriate path toward transferring from a public California community college to a public California university.

Transferring from a Private or Out-of-State Institution

In addition to ASSIST, course articulation (course to course equivalencies) for some private and out-of-state institutions are available through the CollegeSource Transfer Evaluation Sytem (TES) site. Articulations for the CSU CourseMatch and Fully-Online courses are also available on TES. Students can view how other CSU online courses will be accepted at Cal State Fullerton.

Transferring coursework.

Below is information for transferring coursework to UMBC.

New Students

Transfer courses to umbc.

In order for previous coursework to be evaluated and transferred, students must be degree-seeking. In addition, the coursework must be on an official, sealed transcript, and come from regionally accredited institutions or directly from CollegeBoard/IB. Transfer Services will not evaluate a transcript that is not official.

If your transfer coursework is coming from a Maryland community college, you may use the Articulation System ( ARTSYS ) as a guide to see how it may be applied to your degree at UMBC. ARTSYS provides transferability and general education requirements for students at the initial point of transfer (first degree seeking enrollment at UMBC). For out-of-state and Maryland four-year colleges and universities, you may use the Transfer Evaluation Systems ( TES ).

Maximum Number of Credits Accepted in Transfer 

UMBC will accept a maximum of 70 credits from two-year colleges and military courses, and a maximum of 90 total transfer credits, which includes AP, IB, CLEP, DANTES, and A-Levels credit. Students accepted into the Engineering Program (with a completed gateway) will be allowed to transfer a maximum of 65 credits from community colleges. Lastly, UMBC will accept a maximum of 64 credits for students entering with an Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT) from Maryland community colleges.

Applying Courses to your UMBC Record

As your transcripts and score reports are received, a course-by-course evaluation of your previous coursework is conducted by Transfer Services and posted to your record. Your transfer credit report ( TCR ) will identify your previous college level coursework as well as test scores and show how it is transferable to UMBC.

Transfer courses are applied as academic credit, but the grade is not included in your UMBC grade point average (GPA). Remember, credits transfer–not grades. When appropriate, courses are applied to your general education and university requirements. Some courses may also be applied toward major or minor requirements. Applicable courses can satisfy both general and major/minor requirements simultaneously. The degree audit and myUMBC profile will display coursework and how it is used toward your degree progress.

Student Role in the Transfer Evaluation

Based on a review of your initial transfer credit report and degree audit, you may need to provide additional information to complete the transfer process.

Here are the most common situations which will require follow-up:

1. There were in-progress courses on the last transcript you submitted:

Submit final official transcripts from other colleges attended and any score reports from AP, IB, CLEP, DANTES, and A-Levels to the Registrar’s Office. In-progress courses are not posted to the TCR, and therefore, cannot be used for prerequisites or degree requirements.

2. A course has been posted on your TCR incorrectly (e.g. Statistics was entered as Statics) or completed coursework is not posted:

Contact the Registrar’s Office so it can be corrected. Create a Help (RT) ticket in myUMBC or call the office.

3. There is a notation on the TCR of “Info Needed:”

This means the course title/description did not provide enough information. Please complete the electronic Course Review form and attach a detailed syllabus (with a list of topics) or outline (PDF only). Syllabi are often available on the website of your prior institution.

4. You have completed coursework that may be applicable to major or minor requirements and your TCR does not show your transfer course as directly equivalent to a specific UMBC course. For example, General Chemistry I from the University of Tampa is equivalent to CHEM SL_1L on your TCR instead of CHEM 101.

Please complete the electronic Course Review form.

5. You have exceeded the transfer credit maximums:

Additional credits cannot be added to your record once you have reached the transfer credit maximum; however, the degree audit will reorganize classes and use those that fulfill academic requirements. Credit totals will not increase, but a course above the credit maximum could be used to fulfill a specific degree requirement.

6. You believe you have lost credits:

Loss of credit is often mistaken for a lack of direct equivalencies. Instead, loss of credit is actually having a substantial amount of nontransferable courses on your transfer credit report, low grades notwithstanding. If your transfer credit report has general education (e.g., ENGL AH 1L), general electives (e.g., ENGL 3U), or transfer electives (e.g., TRAN 4U), these courses are serving a purpose toward degree completion, even if the purpose is simply increasing your credits towards the graduation requirement. Your degree audit will illustrate how each is used.

The following course types are deemed nontransferable:

• nonacademic (e.g. developmental, study skills, or cuisine)

• vocational/professional (e.g. dentistry or HVAC)

7. You have questions about your degree audit:

If you find your degree audit report is not categorizing your transfer courses in the most beneficial way under the rules, contact your academic advisor to discuss details. If after meeting with your academic advisor, you both identify courses that were not used advantageously you can work with Transfer Services to have your audit adjusted.

If there is anything about the processing of your transfer credits you do not fully understand, discuss your questions with your academic advisor. If they are unable to answer all of your questions, please ask the Transfer Services team for an explanation.

Transfer of Test Credit (Prior Learning)

UMBC does award credit for certain AP, IB, CLEP, DANTES, and A-Levels examinations. A list of examinations and necessary scores for which you may earn credit is available in the UMBC Undergraduate Catalog. In order to award credit, UMBC must receive official copies of your scores directly from the testing authority. Scores recorded on transcripts from prior colleges are not accepted. Have your official scores sent to the UMBC Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

High School Articulation Credit

High school articulation refers to college credits awarded for high school course work. To be evaluated for transfer, they must be posted on a college transcript as credit earned toward a degree program. Please review UMBC’s transfer credit policy for colleges and universities for more guidance.

Current Students

Verification of transferability (vot).

Current UMBC students who are considering taking courses elsewhere in the United States or CLEP exams must complete a Verification of Transferability (VOT) form prior to their enrollment in the course. Failure to complete the VOT form prior to enrolling in courses off-campus may result in the course not being accepted for transfer and/or applied to degree requirements.

The form must be submitted at least 3 weeks before the course begins. Note: Montgomery College and University of Maryland Global Campus require an approved VOT prior to registration.

Students seeking direct equivalencies for courses other than Maryland Community College coursework or coursework listed in the Transfer Evaluation System should submit a course syllabus with their VOT, and allow an additional four to six weeks for review.

Once students have finished their coursework at another institution, it is their responsibility to submit an official transcript to the Registrar’s Office.

Current students who are considering taking courses outside of the United States must go through the Study Abroad program. They will be provided with the appropriate transfer review forms when they obtain a pre-departure packet from the Study Abroad Coordinator in the Education Abroad Office.

Maryland Community Colleges and ARTSYS

Students taking coursework at Maryland Community Colleges can do a transferability review of how courses will transfer to UMBC using ARTSYS : The online Articulation System for Maryland Colleges and Universities. The Verification of Transferability form should still be submitted.

Current and re-admitted students will not receive general education credit for Maryland Community College courses equated to UMBC courses that are not designated as satisfying the general education requirement. Please consult the university catalog for further information.

Graduate Students

Translated, official transcripts for international coursework must be accompanied by a course-by-course evaluation from Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE), Educational Perspectives, Foreign Credential Services of America, or World Education Services (WES).

Sequences and deadlines for the bs in nursing transfer program.

The  BS in Nursing Transfer  program is based on a cohort model. Students progress through the curriculum in sequence with an assigned group of students.

Students complete the required 48 units of prerequisite coursework and then begin nursing specific coursework either in the fall, spring, or summer semester and continue in sequence for three consecutive semesters per year.

BS in Nursing Transfer Program Application Deadlines

All requirements must be met and documents received by the deadline to be considered for admissions review.

Admission Requirements

The  university  and program admission requirements below must be met before an application is considered complete.

  • Application for admission
  • $45 nonrefundable application fee
  • Official transcripts sent to APU’s Student Services Center (SSC) for all college credit, degrees, certificates, AP scores, or credentials earned prior to application to APU An official transcript is one that Azusa Pacific University receives unopened in an envelope sealed by the former institution and that bears the official seal of the college or university. A cumulative minimum 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) grade-point average is required for regular admission status. Provisional admittance may be granted to individuals with a lower GPA if competency can be shown through multiple measures. This program requires a minimum of 48 college or university semester units of transferable nursing prerequisite course requirements prior to the semester in which the student is requesting admission.
  • Two professional recommendations (from school or work)
  • One-page statement of professional goals in nursing
  • Résumé reflecting volunteer and paid work experience within the past three years. Please include leadership positions held within volunteer organizations, community service experience and/or employment where applicable.
  • Successfully complete prerequisite requirements including General Microbiology with lab (4 units); Human Anatomy with lab (4 units); Human Physiology with lab (4 units); and General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry for the Health Sciences (4 units) with no lower than an overall  B-  (2.7) grade-point average, and with no lower than a  C  (2.0) in each course.

Once a student has received a letter of acceptance into the School of Nursing, proof of the following must be provided:

  • Full physical examination clearance done within the past 12 months. This report is to be submitted the APU Student Health Center;
  • Current two-step TB test, Hepatitis B, MMR titer, Varicella titer, and Tdap immunizations;
  • A current background check;
  • Ability to meet physical sensory technical standards required for safe and competent performance of the duties and skills needed for the nursing profession; and
  • Current CPR with AED certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support for Health Care Providers for adults and children from the American Heart Association.

Admitted students will be required to submit a $500 nonrefundable admissions deposit within a week to hold their spot in the cohort.

Transfer Students with Nursing Credit

  • Transfer applicants who have completed college nursing courses in nationally accredited nursing or other health care programs are evaluated individually and may be given credit for courses that meet the requirements.
  • Up to 70 units of community college credit and additional units from a university (per registrar’s approval) may be transferred. No community college nursing credit will be transferred. Applicants may petition to have nursing units transferred from a nationally accredited university, but must receive administrative approval for inclusion in total credits. Some nursing courses may also be challenged by the applicant if they have taken similar coursework from another accredited university.
  • Students with transferable nursing courses must take UNRS 270 Theories and Concepts in Professional Nursing prior to any other nursing course at APU except UNRS 220 Health Assessment, which may be taken concurrently.
  • Transfer students with nursing credit must meet the BS in Nursing Transfer program requirements for transfer applicants above, plus:
  • Submit a letter of recommendation/academic standing from the dean/director of the previous school to the School of Nursing;
  • Submit course syllabi and catalog descriptions for all courses for which nursing transfer credit is requested to the School of Nursing; and
  • The School of Nursing will only consider accepting nursing courses transferred in from an accredited baccalaureate nursing program.

International Students

Please note: International students on an F-1 or J-1 visa are not currently eligible to apply for the 2+2 program, but may apply to the  traditional BSN program .

Scholarships and Grants

Scholarships   and   grants   are considered “gift aid” and do not require repayment. They can come from federal, state, or private sources. Scholarships are typically merit-based, meaning they are awarded depending on demonstrated academic ability or other specific talents.

Scholarships are often available from sources outside of APU. You can search for these scholarships through websites such as   finaid.org   or   fastweb.com . The Student Services Center is sometimes notified of scholarships available through APU departments or local organizations, and can provide information about any available scholarships on request.

Education Loans

Education loans   are usually repaid after graduation, may be deferred until after graduate school, and often have very low interest rates.

Military Benefits

Military members—and in some cases their spouses and dependents—qualify for   financial assistance   covering tuition, housing, and books. Student Employment

On-campus   student employment   is available for students needing additional income to pay for education-related expenses. APU students also find work off campus in the surrounding community.

Basic requirements

Basic requirements are the academic standards you have to meet to be considered for admission to the UC system. It’s important to know about the basic requirements, and they should be the starting point for your transfer planning. If you think you want to transfer, learn more about the different paths to UC . 

As a junior-level transfer applicant, you’ll need to meet the following requirements. Luckily, some of your major preparation and general education coursework will count toward these requirements. 

Complete the following 7-course pattern by the end of the spring term prior to fall enrollment at UC.

  • Two transferable courses in English composition;
  • One transferable course in mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning;
  • arts and humanities
  • social and behavioral sciences
  • physical and biological sciences

For example:

3 chemistry courses and 1 history course 2 sociology courses, 1 physics course, and 1 art history course 1 biology course and 3 literature courses

Complete at least 60 semester (90 quarter) units of UC-transferable credit.  

No more than 14 semester (21 quarter) units of the 60 semester (90 quarter) units may be taken pass/fail or credit/no credit. Learn more about  UC-transferable credit. 

Earn at least a 2.4 GPA in UC-transferable courses (2.8 if you're a nonresident).

Some campuses and majors may require a higher GPA for admission selection.

Complete the required/recommended courses needed for your intended major with the minimum grades.

Visit  ASSIST  to see the major preparation coursework expected by each campus or refer to UC's Transfer Pathways , a single set of courses you can take to prepare for your major on any of our nine undergraduate campuses. 

As you are planning your UC transfer, keep these important facts in mind: 

  • Each course must be worth at least 3 semester units (or 4-5 quarter units) and be UC-transferable. Check ASSIST to see what courses from your community college are transferable. 
  • You need to earn a grade of C or better in each course or a Pass (P) grade if pass is equivalent to a C (2.00). 
  • You need to be in good academic standing (GPA 2.00 or above) at the last college/university you attended prior to enrolling at UC. 
  • AP exam scores of 3, 4, or 5 may also be used in appropriate subject areas (exception: only one of the two English courses required can be satisfied by an AP exam score)
  • All campuses recommend that you complete math and English as early as possible (some highly recommend completing them by the end of the fall term, one year prior to enrolling at UC). 
  • If you've completed IGETC or campus-specific general education requirements, you may have already satisfied the 7-course pattern

High school students attending one or a combination of the California Community Colleges (CCC)?

  • Have you been to your college's transfer center? Counselors have copies of   GE or IGETC patterns   to help with course selection each semester. Taking GE courses can help explore majors and meet admission requirements. You can also get more information about the AA-T and AS-T degrees.
  • Note : Chico only accepts 70 transferable semesters (105 quarter) units from community colleges.

High School Scholars

Local 11th or 12th grade students with GPAs of 3.0 or higher interested in taking up to two college-level courses at California State University, Chico may participate in the High School Scholars (HSS) program. 

Fall 2024 Application

  • Application due date: August 20, 2024. 
  • High school counselor's signature
  • Parent or guardian signature
  • Unofficial transcripts and/or test scores, including as applicable: high school, community colleges, and/or four-year universities
  • When you have signed your application, you will be prompted to provide the name and email of a parent or guardian and a high school counselor. The application will automatically route to their email addresses for signature and will automatically send a copy of the application and all attachments to all parties, including  [email protected].
  • Once reviewed and approved, Admissions emails you from   [email protected]  with instructions to access your  Chico State Portal   to pay HSS fees.
  • New HSS applicants must activate their Portal. Past applicants can simply log into their Portal. 

Fee Payment

  • Due date: August 23, 2024
  • The HSS fee is a flat rate of $118 whether you enroll in one or two courses
  • After submitting your application to the Office of Admissions, Student Financial Services places the fee in your   Chico State Portal   as a "general payment"
  • Log into your Chico State Portal and follow the instructions provided by Admissions to pay your fee prior to course registration

Course Registration

HSS students may register for any 100- or 200-level course in which there are open seats, and for which they are eligible either by placement or prerequisite completion*.

  • HSS applicants may register for courses during the add/drop period, as early as August 26, 2024, the first day of classes 
  • Upon fee payment, Admissions sends you the HSS Add/Update Request form
  • Submit a HSS Add/Update Request form for each course
  • A complete HSS Add/Update Request form has all fields filled and an instructor's signature
  • Submit your HSS course add form to the Office of the Registrar

*CSU Area A2 English Courses

HSS students may enroll in Journalism 130, but may not enroll in English 130. 

*CSU Area B4 Mathematics Courses

The CSU uses multiple measures to determine General Education B4 (Math) readiness. Prior to enrolling in any Chico State math course, HSS students must  provide evidence of readiness . Assessments take time and any student wishing to enroll in a math course should plan to submit their HSS application early and to complete the assessments well in advance of the first day of classes.

US approves $20 billion in weapons sales to Israel amid threat of wider Middle East war

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. has approved $20 billion in arms sales to Israel , including scores of fighter jets and advanced air-to-air missiles, the State Department announced Tuesday.

Congress was notified of the impending sale, which includes more than 50 F-15 fighter jets, Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles, or AMRAAMs, 120 mm tank ammunition and high explosive mortars and tactical vehicles and comes at a time of intense concern that Israel may become involved in a wider Middle East war .

However, the weapons are not expected to get to Israel anytime soon, they are contracts that will take years to fulfill. Much of what is being sold is to help Israel increase its military capability in the long term, the earliest systems being delivered under the contract aren’t expected until the 2026 timeframe.

“The United States is committed to the security of Israel, and it is vital to U.S. national interests to assist Israel to develop and maintain a strong and ready self-defense capability. This proposed sale is consistent with those objectives,” the State Department said in a release on the sale.

The Biden administration has had to balance its continued support for Israel with a growing number of calls from lawmakers and the U.S. public to curb military support there due to the high number of civilian deaths in Gaza. It has curbed one delivery of 2,000-pound weapons amid continued airstrikes by Israel in densely populated civilian areas in Gaza.

The contracts will cover not only the sale of new 50 aircraft to be produced by Boeing. It will also include upgrade kits for Israel to modify its existing fleet of two dozen F-15 fighter jets with new engines and radars, among other upgrades. The jets comprise the biggest portion of the $20 billion in sales with the first deliveries expected in 2029.

Morrisons has admitted it "went a bit too far" with self-checkouts.

Chief executive Rami Baitiéh says the supermarket is "reviewing the balance between self-checkouts and manned tills".

Some will be removed.

Mr Baitiéh told The Telegraph : "Morrisons went a bit too far with the self-checkout. This had the advantage of driving some productivity. However, some shoppers dislike it, mainly when they have a full trolley."

The executive also said self checkouts had driven more shoplifting.

Asda's chief financial officer Michael Gleeson said last week the technology had reached its limit - and said his firm would be putting more staff on tills.

Northern grocer Booths ditched almost all self-checkouts last year amid customer service concerns.

Over at Marks & Spencer, chairman Archie Norman last year blamed self-checkouts for a rise in "middle-class shoplifting".

But Tesco CEO Ken Murphy is an advocate: "We genuinely believe, at the end of the day, it provides a better customer experience."

The number of drivers visited by bailiffs due to unpaid traffic fines has increased substantially, according to a report.

Four million penalty charge notices (PCNs) were referred to bailiffs in England and Wales in the 2023-24 financial year, it is claimed.

This is up from 2.4 million during the previous 12 months, 1.9 million in 2019-20 and 1.3 million in 2017-18.

Ted Baker is the latest in a string of high-street giants to call in administrators in recent years, with shops set to disappear this week.

But how does it affect you? 

Purchases and returns

You can still buy items online and in store until they close, but you could run into trouble returning them. 

If the retailer stops trading, it may not be able to get your money back to you.

If that is the case, you would have to file a claim with Teneo (Ted Baker's administrator) to join a list of creditors owed money by Ted Baker – and even then there's no guarantee you'd get your money back.

If you have a gift card, you need to use it while you still can.

Credits and debits

You can file a claim with your debit or credit card provider to recover lost funds - but how exactly does that work?

  • Credit card:  If you bought any single item costing between £100-£30,000 and paid on a credit card, the card firm is liable if something goes wrong. If any purchase was less than £100, you may still be able to get your money back via chargeback;
  • Debit card:  Under chargeback, your bank can try to get your money back from Ted Baker's bank. However, be aware that this is not a legal requirement and it can later be disputed and recalled.

Many retailers boosted wages after living wage/minimum wage changes in spring.

Figures show German discount brands Aldi and Lidl top the list of major UK supermarkets when it comes to staff hourly pay - after Lidl introduced its third pay increase of the year in May to match its closest rival.

Meanwhile, Morrisons is at the bottom of the pack for staff pay outside London, with hourly wages starting at the National Living Wage (£11.44).

How do other companies compare when it comes to pay and benefits? We've taken a look...

Pay: £12.40 an hour outside London and £13.65 inside the M25

Aldi announced in March it was bringing in its second pay rise of the year as part of its aim to be the best-paying UK supermarket.

From 1 June, hourly pay rose from £12 an hour to £12.40 outside the M25 and £13.55 to £13.65 in London. 

Aldi is one of the only supermarkets to give staff paid breaks. It also offers perks such as discounted gym membership and cinema tickets, and financial planning tools. However, there are no cheaper meals, staff discounts or bonus schemes.

Pay:  £12.04 an hour outside London and £13.21 inside the M25

As of 1 July, hourly wages for Asda supermarket staff rose to £12.04 per hour from £11.11, with rates for London staff also going up to £13.21.

As part of the July changes, Asda brought in the option for free later-life care or mortgage advice. The company also offers a pension and a free remote GP service.

Pay:  £12 an hour outside London and £13.15 inside the M25

Co-op boosted its minimum hourly wage for customer team members from £10.90 to £12 nationally as the national living wage rose to £11.44 in April.

For staff inside the M25, rates rose from £12.25 to £13.15.

The perks are better than some. Workers can get 30% off Co-op branded products in its food stores as well as 10% off other brands. Other benefits include a cycle to work scheme, childcare vouchers and discounts on its other services.

Pay:  £11.50 an hour outside London and £12.65 inside the M25

Iceland says it pays £11.50 for staff aged 21 and over - 6p above the minimum wage. Employees in London receive £12.65 per hour.

Staff are also offered a 15% in-store discount, which was raised from 10% in 2022 to help with the cost of living.

The firm says it offers other perks such as a healthcare scheme and Christmas vouchers.

Pay:  £12.40 an hour outside London and £13.65 inside the M25

From June, Lidl matched its rival Aldi by raising its hourly wage to £12.40 for workers outside the M25 and £13.55 for those inside.

Lidl also offers its staff a 10% discount card from the first working day, as well as other perks such as dental insurance and fertility leave. 

Marks and Spencer's hourly rate for store assistants was hiked from £10.90 to £12 for staff outside London and from £12.05 to £13.15 for London workers from April.

The grocer also offers a 20% staff discount after the probation period as well as discretionary bonus schemes and a free virtual GP service.

Pay:  £11.44 an hour outside London and £12.29 inside the M25

Along with many other retailers, Morrisons increased the hourly wage for staff outside the M25 in line with the national living wage of £11.44 in April.

Employees in London receive an 85p supplement.

While it's not the most competitive for hourly pay, Morrisons offers perks including staff discounted meals, a 15% in-store discount and life assurance scheme.

Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury's hourly rate for workers outside London rose to £12 from March, and £13.15 for staff inside the M25.

The company also offers a 10% discount card for staff to use at Sainsbury's, Argos and Habitat, as well as a range of benefits including season ticket loans and long service rewards.

Pay:  £12.02 an hour outside London and £13.15 inside the M25

Since April, Tesco staff have been paid £12.02 an hour nationally - up from £11.02 - while London workers get £13.15 an hour.

The supermarket giant also provides a 10% in-store discount, discounted glasses, health checks and insurance, and free 24/7 access to a virtual GP.

Staff get their pay boosted by 10% on a Sunday if they joined the company before 24 July 2022.

Pay:  £11.55 an hour outside London and £12.89 inside the M25

Waitrose store staff receive £11.55 an hour nationally, while workers inside the M25 get at least £12.89.

Staff can also get access to up to 25% off at Waitrose's partner retailer John Lewis as well as 20% in Waitrose shops. 

JLP (the John Lewis Partnership) gives staff a bonus as an annual share-out of profit determined by the firm's performance. In 2021-22 the bonus was 3% of pay; however, it has not paid the bonus for the past two years.

Dozens of Ted Baker stores will shut for the last time this week amid growing doubts over a future licensing partnership with the retail tycoon Mike Ashley.

Sky News understands that talks between Mr Ashley's Frasers Group and Authentic, Ted Baker's owner, have stalled three months after it appeared that an agreement was imminent.

Administrators are overseeing the closure of its remaining 31 UK shops.

One store source said they had been told that this Tuesday would be the final day of trading.

The housing market experienced a surge in activity following the Bank of England's recent decision to cut interest rates, according to a leading property website.

Estate agents reported a 19% jump in enquiries about properties for sale after 1 August, when compared with the same period last year, research by Rightmove found.

It came after the Bank cut rates for the first time in more than four years from 5.25% to 5%.

The lead negotiator for major train union ASLEF has denied the union sees the new government as a "soft touch" after announcing fresh strikes two days after train drivers were offered a pay deal.

Drivers working for London North Eastern Railway will walk out on weekends from the end of August in a dispute over working agreements.

Lead negotiator Nigel Roebuck said it is a separate issue from the long-running row over pay, which looks likely to be resolved after a much-improved new offer from the government.

Over 40 bottles of fake vodka have been seized from a shop in Scotland after a customer reported "smelling nail varnish".

The 35cl bottles, fraudulently labelled as the popular brand Glen's, were recovered from the shop in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire.

Officers from the council's environmental health officers and Food Standard Scotland (FSS) sent them for analysis after a customer raised the alarm by saying they smelt nail varnish from one of the bottles.

The bottles were found to be counterfeit.

Britons don't have long left to claim cost of living assistance from the Household Support Fund.

Introduced in October 2021, the scheme provides local councils with funding which can be used to support those struggling most with the rising cost of living.

The vast majority of councils operate their version of the Household Support Fund on a "first come, first serve" basis and will officially end the schemes once the funding has run out in September.

The help provided by councils has ranged from free cash payments, council tax discounts, and vouchers for supermarkets and energy providers.

Who is eligible?

Local authorities were instructed to target the funding at "vulnerable households in most need of support to help with significantly rising living costs" when it was first rolled out.

In particular, councils were guided to make priority considerations for those who: 

  • Are eligible but not claiming qualifying benefits;
  • Became eligible for benefits after the relevant qualifying dates;
  • Are receiving housing benefit only;
  • Are normally eligible for benefits but who had a nil award in the qualifying period.

If you do not meet these criteria, you can still contact your local council , with many having broadened their criteria for eligibility.

Weapons maker BAE Systems is the big loser on the FTSE 100 this morning, with its shares down almost 3% in early trading.

It comes following reports over the weekend that the German government is planning to scale back aid to Ukraine in its war with Russia – in what would be a blow to the arms industry.

German media said ministers are set to slash support for Kyiv to 6% of current levels by 2027 in their upcoming budget.

However, the government there has rejected the reports and has denied it is "stopping support" to Ukraine.

Whatever the truth, the reports appear to have spooked traders.

Other companies involved in the defence sector, including Rolls-Royce Plc and Chemring Group, are also down more than 2% and 1% respectively on Monday.

It comes amid a slight slump in early trading, with the FTSE 100 down just over 0.2%, although the FTSE 250 is up 0.07%.

Gainers this morning include housebuilders Barratt Developments, up 1.5%, and Redrow Plc, which is up almost 3%.

Barratt said today it intends to push ahead with a planned £2.5bn merger with its rival despite concerns from the competition regulator.

Meanwhile, the price of oil is down amid concerns of weaker demand in China.

Ongoing ceasefire talks in the Israel-Hamas conflict have also raised hopes of cooling tensions in the Middle East, which would help ease supply risks and worries.

A barrel of the benchmark Brent Crude is currently priced at just over $79 (£61).

On the currency markets, this morning £1 buys $1.29 US or €1.17.

Winter energy bills are projected to rise by 9%, according to a closely watched forecast.

The price cap from October to December will go up to £1,714 a year for the average user, Cornwall Insight says.

It would be a £146 rise from the current cap, which is controlled by energy regulator Ofgem and aims to prevent households on variable tariffs being ripped off.

The cap doesn't represent a maximum bill. Instead it creates an average bill by limiting how much you pay per unit of gas and electricity, as well as setting a maximum daily standing charge (which all households must pay to stay connected to the grid).

Ofgem will announce the October cap this Friday.

"This is not the news households want to hear when moving into the colder months," said the principal consultant at Cornwall, Dr Craig Lowrey.

"Following two consecutive falls in the cap, I'm sure many hoped we were on a steady path back to pre-crisis prices. 

"However, the lingering impact of the energy crisis has left us with a market that's still highly volatile and quick to react to any bad news on the supply front.

"Despite this, while we don't expect a return to the extreme prices of recent years, it's unlikely that bills will return to what was once considered normal. Without significant intervention, this may well be the new normal."

Cornwall Insight warned that the highly volatile energy market and unexpected global events, such as the recent escalating tensions in the Russia-Ukraine war, could see prices rise further at the start of the new year.

To avoid this vulnerability, Cornwall Insight said domestic renewable energy production should increase and Britain should wean itself off energy imports.

Kellogg's appears to have shrunk its packets of Corn Flakes. 

Two of its four different pack sizes have reduced in weight by 50g, according to The Sun. 

What used to be 720g boxes are now 670g, while 500g boxes have become 450g. 

The newspaper says the 670g boxes are being sold for £3.20 in Tesco - the same price customers were paying for the larger box back in May. 

The 450g boxes are being sold for £2.19, only slightly less than the previous price of £2.25.

Other supermarkets have similar pricing, although in Morrisons the price has gone down in proportion to the size reduction.

The 250g and 1kg pack sizes remain unchanged. 

Kellogg's has said it is up to shops to choose what they charge, but Tesco said the manufacturer should comment on pricing. 

Sky News has contacted Kellogg's for comment.

A spokesperson is quoted by The Sun: "Kellogg's Corn Flakes are available in four different box sizes to suit different shopper preferences and needs. 

"As the cost of ingredients and production processes increase, it costs us more to make our products than it used to.

"This can impact the recommended retail price. It's the grocer's absolute discretion and decision what price to charge shoppers."
