The Ph.D. in Law degree program is designed to prepare J.D. graduates for careers as legal scholars and teachers through a doctoral program aimed at the production of a substantial body of academic research and writing under the close supervision of a three-member faculty dissertation committee. Unlike programs designed for students who wish to learn about law from the disciplinary perspectives of the social sciences or the humanities, the Ph.D. in Law is directed at students who wish to pursue advanced studies in law from the perspective of the law. This program offers emerging scholars an opportunity to contribute to the development of law as an academic field, and it provides an alternate pathway into law teaching alongside existing routes such as fellowships, advanced degrees in cognate fields, legal practice, and clerkships.

Because our entering Ph.D. students will have already completed their J.D. degrees, the anticipated course of study toward the Ph.D. in Law degree is three academic years and two summers in residence. In their first two semesters, Ph.D. students will enroll in courses designed to help them acquire the background and research skills needed to complete a dissertation in their field of interest and to prepare them for qualifying examinations that test the depth and breadth of the literacies and skills they have acquired. During their second year, students will prepare a dissertation prospectus and begin work on a dissertation. The dissertation may take the form of either three law review articles or a book-length manuscript and will make up a portfolio of writing that will be essential for success in the job market. Ph.D. students will also gain experience in the classroom, and receive the full support of Yale Law School’s Law Teaching Program , which has had remarkable success in placing graduates in tenure-track positions at leading law schools.

Ph.D. students receive a full-tuition waiver, a health award for health insurance coverage, and a stipend to cover their year-round living expenses, as well as support for participation in national and international conferences.

Applications for admission to the Ph.D. in Law program are available starting on August 15. The deadline for submission of all materials is December 15. Applicants to the Ph.D. in Law program must complete a J.D. degree at a U.S. law school before they matriculate and begin the Ph.D. program. The School of Law, UPES, was established in 2007 and presently offers UG, PG and PhD programs. UPES is ranked 29 by NIRF (2024) in Law category. School of Law is known for its Academic rigour, innovative teaching pedagogy, industry connections and research. Different programs at all levels include research components. The undergraduate and postgraduate students write dissertations as part of their compulsory credit course. This orients them towards research and writing. Evidence of success in delivering research orientation to our students, is that a good number of students are working for law firms, creating mark in litigation and corporate apart from lot LLM graduates working for many reputed institutions in Academics. Major research areas of our research scholars have been Corporate Law, Intellectual Property , Environmental Law and Cyber Law. UPES SoL is also a favoured destination for industry persons to pursue their research interests. This is because of the industry-relevant research and adequate mentoring is being available. Faculty research has also been a strength at SoL. Most of our faculty members are doctorates, and the rest of the faculty are pursuing their PhD.

School of Law, UPES, is firmly established in its research orientation. Even the UG students write dissertations as part of compulsory credit courses. The dissertation qualifies all research requirements, and students are closely guided and mentored for their dissertations. In the beginning, they are provided workshop-based guidance on research methodology.

PG students are also well guided on research methodology and research tools. Repeated sessions are organised for PG and PhD scholars on RM, use of research tools, databases and research ethics.

Moreover, faculty are also encouraged to publish. SoL also supports its faculty to participate in conferences in India and abroad for high-quality research and development. Research rewards are also provided to promote and facilitate research at the faculty level. Faculty colleagues are encouraged to work towards Research projects and publications through Seed Funding and support from the Research and Development Department of the University.

Candidates for admission to the Ph.D. program shall have a Master's degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognised or authorised by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or to assure quality and standards of educational institutions.

A relaxation of 5% in marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-abled and other categories of candidates as per extant UGC Regulations from time to time; or for those who had obtained their Master's degree prior to 19th September 1991.The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever the grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace mark procedures.

Ph.D. Admissions

The application for autumn 2025 Ph.D. admission will open on Sept. 1, 2024, and the deadline is April 1, 2025. Submitted applications that are not complete by the April 1 deadline may be denied without review. Admissions for entry to autumn 2024 have closed and late applications will not be accepted.

The Ph.D. Program at the University of Washington School of Law is highly competitive. Only a handful of applicants may be admitted in any given year.

Eligibility Requirements

Entry to the Ph.D. program requires an LL.M. degree or equivalent advanced degree in exceptional circumstances. The LL.M. degree may be counted toward the credit necessary for the Ph.D. program.

Preference will be given to:

• University of Washington School of Law students who want to continue their studies with an identified faculty member who agrees to serve as chair of that student’s committee; or
• Extraordinary students from other institutions with strong support by a UW Law faculty member who agrees to chair the student’s Ph.D. committee, provided their application is as competitive as those from UW Law candidates.

Application Process

The application process to the Ph.D. Program is online through the University of Washington Graduate School. Fill out an online application , upload the following documents, designate recommenders, and pay the application fee.

To be considered complete by the admissions committee, an application must contain:

• A letter of recommendation from a UW Law faculty member in which they commit to chairing the Ph.D. committee and supervising the applicant for the duration of their Ph.D. studies, including information about the novelty and significance of the proposed topic as well as other committee members chosen ahead of time and with sufficient and continuous connection to the law school.
• Letters of recommendation from committee members who have already agreed to serve. To identify the chair and committee members in the application, applicants are provided instructions within the application to designate them.
• Statement of Purpose (1–2 pages). Please state the reasons for wishing to undertake Ph.D. studies, your area(s) of research interest and future career plans.
• Writing Sample . The writing sample should be an original piece of legal scholarship (an LL.M. paper or a published article), authored solely by the applicant and no more than 30 pages in length. An excerpt from a longer essay or article may be submitted.
• Dissertation Proposal (8-10 pages). The proposal should be detailed enough to show your understanding of your field of interest and the need for new, original research and must include a topic that is novel and significant, as detailed in a written prospectus, to include research questions, significance of topic to existing literature, and methodology.
• Study Plan . A mapped-out plan for academic study, including specific courses across UW departments that provide the requisite body of knowledge for the proposed dissertation topic, and estimated timeline.
• Resume listing educational qualifications, work experience, date of admission to legal practice (if applicable) academic honors and awards and any other professional affiliations relevant to the application. 
• Transcripts and Degree Statements (including date of graduation and title of academic degree awarded) from all colleges and universities attended. This includes transcripts for in-progress degrees and also for degrees that were attempted but not completed. Admitted students will be required to have one of their official transcripts with degree statement (usually LL.M.) sent directly to the UW Graduate School from the degree granting institution for verification.
• Admissions interviews may be required to determine if the topic is novel and significant; if the prospectus is complete; and if the proposed methodology will get the project from questions to answers.

LANGUAGE ABILITY

International and foreign-educated applicants are expected to have a high level of ability in reading, writing and delivering presentations in English.

The PhD in Law may be awarded after three to four years of full-time study  (including a probationary period) of supervised independent research on the basis of a thesis not exceeding 100,000 words, exclusive of bibliography, table of contents and any other preliminary matter. The course can also be taken part-time as either 60% or 75% of full-time study, and the course length will be adjusted accordingly. Students are appointed a principal Supervisor by the Faculty's Degree Committee as well as an academic advisor to act as a source of advice on matters relating to a student's research and research environment. If the project is interdisciplinary, a second Supervisor may be appointed. While individual arrangements may vary considerably, PhD students may normally expect to receive one-to-one supervision once a month during the early stages of their research. Meetings may be less frequent thereafter.

A PhD thesis must take due account of previously published work on the subject. It must represent a significant contribution to learning through, for example, the discovery of new knowledge, the connection of previously unrelated facts, the development of new theory or the revision of older views. A PhD research proposal of between 2,000 and 3,000 words in length (inclusive of footnotes but exclusive of bibliography) should be submitted at the time of application for consideration by the Faculty's Degree Committee. Candidates are initially registered for the Certificate of Postgraduate Study in Legal Studies and are required to attend the classes provided by the Faculty's Research Training and Development Programme, which aims to provide an introduction to advanced research techniques and methods in law and cognate disciplines.

Towards the end of May of their first year (or at a proportionally later date for part-time candidates), candidates are required to submit three items for a progress review: a personal progress log, a 15,000-word thesis, and a short explanation of the proposed topic of the PhD. The work is formally assessed (normally by two teaching members of the Faculty), and students must attend an oral examination.   

After this examination, the assessors' reports, along with a recommendation from the Supervisor(s), are considered by the Faculty's Degree Committee whose members then decide whether the candidate be upgraded to doctoral status. The PhD registration date is normally backdated so as to include the period spent working on the Certificate.

About Postgraduate Law

A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law through distance learning offers a flexible platform for in-depth legal research and scholarship. It caters to those who wish to combine an advanced higher education qualification with their existing work or personal commitments by providing the ability to study from anywhere globally. You’ll be able to undertake the majority of your research at an off-campus location.

There are 19 such courses in the UK, and full-time students are expected to complete their work within three years. Courses are competitive, and a first class or upper second-class honours degree in law (or a subject related to the proposed area of research) is usually required.

What you'll study

The Doctor of Philosophy (Law) is awarded on the basis of a supervised thesis of a maximum 80,000 words. The thesis must make a substantially original contribution to the knowledge of the subject concerned. Students are also required to complete the compulsory research-support coursework units, LAWS6077 Legal Research 1 within the first 12 months of their candidature and LAWS7001 Legal Research 2 within the first 24 months.

There is no separate tuition fee cost for the coursework units of study you will undertake, it is part of the tuition fee for the course .

To apply for admission to a Doctor of Philosophy (Law) degree, you must submit a formal application for admission.

Expression of Interest (Optional)

While you are not required to submit an Expression of Interest before applying, Sydney Law School recommends that you do so before submitting a formal application, especially if:

· you are seeking funding assistance;

· have not identified a potential supervisor ; or

· you are an international applicant. 

Submitting an Expression of Interest will allow the School to support you in presenting a formal application and provide you with feedback on whether your application is likely to succeed.

The Expression of Interest form includes information about your intended research topic, academic and professional qualifications, and publications.

To allow the School to consider your information and provide you appropriate and timely guidance, applicants are encouraged to submit an Expression of Interest as early as possible and no later than:

You must ensure that all required supporting documents are submitted with your application, including the following documents requested by Sydney Law School:

. expression of interest acceptance (if submitted one), otherwise please include evidence of consultation/comments from potential supervisors. The nomination of supervisors is determined by the Law Postgraduate Research Education Committee.

·  full research proposal (approximately 10 pages) which outlines:

    - a ims of the proposed research thesis

    - background to the research, including a brief reference to the relevant iterature and law (including case law where appropriate)

    - a clear statement of the area to be researched

    - rationale for the research and a statement of why it is significant

    - working hypotheses or research questions

    - research methodology including theoretical and empirical considerations for the research

    - statement indicating how you will be able to sufficiently fund your proposed field work or overseas study/research. Explain why this work is essential for completion of your thesis.

Completion requirement

To satisfy requirements of the degree students must:

• complete any specified probationary requirements;
• complete LAWS6077 Legal Research 1 and LAWS7001 Legal Research 2;
• conduct research on an approved topic; and
• write a thesis of a maximum 80,000 words embodying the results of the research.

Admission requirement

There are three main conditions of admission, namely:

(i) Academic qualifications

(ii) Research and publication experience and

(iii) Suitability of the proposed course of study and research. If you are not academically qualified to undertake a research degree, you may consider pursuing your research interests through coursework study before progressing to a research degree.

The coursework program provides you with an opportunity to enhance your expertise in the proposed area of research by allowing you to complete research projects in related units of study. Applicants require a Master's degree (with a significant research component) and/or Bachelor's degree with first or upper second class honours.

Our Law PhD programme enables you to conduct legal research under the supervision of our international, experienced, and highly committed faculty.

You will be supervised by two academic members of staff, and take part in a research training programme which provides you with the knowledge and skills to design and carry out a rigorous PhD research project.

You also have opportunities to present your work in the School of Law’s research seminars and the Faculty’s annual postgraduate research student conference. This will enable you to discuss your research with fellow PhD students and staff in the School and the wider Faculty.

We encourage and support you to prepare and submit papers to academic conferences and journals. This provides you with an opportunity to gain feedback from experts in your research field and helps you in developing your academic writing skills.

Upon completion of your PhD, you will have acquired the skills of an independent researcher and have opportunities to pursue an exciting career opportunities in academia, international institutions, industry, government, legal profession (if you already possess relevant professional qualifications) and consultancy.

The School of Law is interested to receive PhD proposals relating to all core law subjects, and those relating to the specialist areas of its staff (including banking and finance, company law, employment law, environmental law, the law of evidence, intellectual property law, the law of the internet and legal pedagogies and practice). The Law School has a strong commitment to the promotion of social justice, and PhD proposals emphasising such themes are particularly encouraged.

Entry requirements

All candidates must meet one of the following conditions:

• A good honours UK Bachelor’s degree (a first or upper second class honours) or equivalent qualifications
• A Master’s degree in Law or related subjects with average marks of 60% or equivalent
• A professional qualification of degree standard obtained by examination

English language requirements

All candidates whose first language is not English must meet one of our English Language requirements specified below:

• IELTS: a minimum score of 6.5 with no sub-test less than 6.5
• TOEFL Internet based test: an overall test result of 94 (minimum scores apply for each subtest)

Please note the English test score only has a fixed two-year validity period. If you don’t have a current English test score, please indicate the date that you will be taking the English test in your application.

The curriculum and syllabus of a PhD in Law can vary as per the specialisation as well the academic institution. But in order to provide you with a general overview, the following paragraphs describe the structure of this doctoral degree as followed for a 3-year program.

• In the first year of a PhD in Law, students get to focus on the coursework of their specialisations with their prospective Advisory Committees. Students can choose to do a research degree at Master of Arts/LLM or PhD level in any of these subjects or areas.

MA by Research:

• A Master’s degree by thesis involves in-depth research on a topic leading to a thesis of 60,000 words over the course of one to two years.

MA by Research/PhD:

• Students may start an MA research thesis, but then apply to transfer to a PhD after their first year if research is expanding; or students may register for a PhD thesis directly.
• This involves in-depth research on a topic and an original contribution to knowledge, leading to a thesis of 100,000 words, examined by a viva voce exam. The PhD thesis generally takes 4 years to complete.
• Applicants will normally be expected to hold an Honours degree (minimum 2.1) or equivalent in a discipline appropriate to their area of proposed research.
• Entry points may differ for applicants with postgraduate qualifications. Please contact the Course Director for further information.

Course Overview

Ph.D. (Law) is a doctoral law programme with a minimum of three years and a maximum of six years of duration. The course mainly aims to formulate the best team of law stalwarts and contains a broad array of theoretical, methodological, and doctrinal concepts of law and the criminal justice system. In addition, the course includes extensive knowledge of legal education, business law, discrimination law and other interdisciplinary collaborations like human rights and criminal justice.

The Ph.D. Law programme enables postgraduates to make advancements in their studies through research work. During the course, the students can contribute to their choice of the academic field and undergo research. Some stringent guidelines related to the doctoral programme are laid down for the candidates. Any violation of these regulations may lead to the cancellation of their candidature.

Ph.D. Program in Law has commenced at HNLU w.e.f. academic session 2014-15 wherein admission of scholars is made strictly on the basis of admission test conducted by the University separately. 

HNLU invites applications for Admissions into the Doctorate in Philosophy (Ph.D.) Programme in Law and Inter-disciplinary studies. The doctoral program at HNLU seeks to provide a forum to the students from legal and inter- disciplinary fields to pursue their academic interests and contribute towards their chosen area of study. 

Specialization: The indicative list of Specialization is as follows:

Seat Intake & Reservation

• *As per the circular issued by the Government of Chhattisgarh No. एफ / 13-3/2023 / आ.प्र. / 1-3, dated 09/05/2023, the reservation of seats for the ST/SC/OBC will be applicable as per the prevailing reservation rule at the time of admission.
• 5% seats shall be reserved horizontally for Specially Abled Persons (SAP) at the All- India and Chhattisgarh levels according to The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.
• 3% seats shall be reserved horizontally for the Dependents of Freedom Fighters (DFF) category of candidates belonging to the State of Chhattisgarh
• If a Chhattisgarh domicile candidate qualifies for admission in the regular merit under the All-India category, the candidate shall be considered against the All-India seat only and not against Chhattisgarh domicile
• 30% of seats shall be reserved horizontally for female candidates across all categories of seats.
• The allotment of seats to various CG Domicile category candidates will be made as per the Guidelines issued by the Government of Chhattisgarh from time to time.
• Students who are transferred from other Universities as per the HNLU Ph.D. Ordinance will be considered as admission to Supernumerary Seats.

Eligibility

• Candidates with a Master’s Degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s Degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions. Candidates with LL.M or equivalent degrees are eligible to apply for PhD in Law or interdisciplinary Ph.D. However, candidates with other Masters degrees or professional degrees are eligible to apply only for interdisciplinary Ph.D.
• A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, shall be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC(non-creamy layer)/differently-abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the University Grants Commission from time to time.
• Candidates who have appeared in the qualifying examination but awaiting results are also eligible to apply, provided that the result of the qualifying examination shall be submitted by the candidate at the time of registration, failing which their candidature shall be canceled.

Program Duration: Ph.D. program shall be for a minimum duration of three years from the date of registration and a maximum of six years.

Admission Process

Stage I: Entrance Test (100 Marks)

• Candidates have to appear for an All-India Ph.D. Entrance Test which shall be for a duration of 2.5 hours.
• Component 01 – Research Aptitude Test – 50 Marks [Syllabus] – Common to all candidates
• Component 02 – Legal Test (for Ph.D. in Law – [Syllabus] ) or Allied Discipline Test (for Ph.D. in Law & Inter-disciplinary Studies – [Syllabus] )– 50 Marks

The candidate needs to score a minimum of 50 % of marks in each component to qualify in the Ph.D. Entrance Test

Candidates, who have qualified for UGC NET (Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)/ lectureship) or SLET, shall be exempted from the Entrance Test. 

Stage II: Personal Interview

• Shortlisted candidates including UGC NET (Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)/ lectureship) or SLET qualified candidates will be required to discuss their research interest/area through a presentation followed by an Interview before the Committee.
• The competence of the candidate for conducting the proposed research,
• The feasibility/suitability of conducting the proposed research work at the University,
• The contribution of the proposed area of research towards knowledge creation / up– gradation.
• Credit Requirement: After having been admitted, each D. scholar shall be required to undertake Course Work. The credit assigned to the Ph.D. course work shall be 14 credits for students registered for Ph.D. in law and 16 credits for students registered for interdisciplinary Ph.D.

• Supervisor : A Ph.D. student shall undertake research work under the guidance of a supervisor allotted by the RDCU. Allotment of Supervisor shall be based on the availability of seats, the specialization of the faculty, the research interest of the candidates

    4.   Attendance:

•   Ph.D. scholars shall be required to be present in the University as per the notification issued in this regard.
• For candidates drawing scholarship/fellowship/stipend or any other monetary benefit from this University or any other organization, attendance is mandatory throughout their registration period and may be allowed to leave the University upon sanctioned leaves, fieldwork, Conferences/seminars etc.

    5.  Progress Review

• Candidates selected for the Ph.D. Programme shall submit a Progress Report to the Supervisor and Co-Supervisor in every six months and a mandatory presentation of the progress shall be made before a panel as decided by the RDCU and the Supervisor/Co-
• The Second or third half-yearly report shall indicate the specific topic of research, along with the final Synopsis in the prescribed format based on the literature survey relevant to the research. The final Synopsis shall be presented before the RDCU for feedback and comments, which shall be suitably incorporated into the Synopsis under the advice of the Supervisor

**        Payable @ Rs.1500/- p.m. for independent room at PhD Scholars wing.

***      On actual which amounts to approximately Rs.4200/- p.m.

Eligibility Criteria

• LLM with at least 55% marks or an equivalent grade. Professional qualification such as CA/ ICWA/ CFA/ CS (both 5 year integrated or 3 years after graduation) with minimum 55% marks.
• Master’s degree in a discipline relevant to the proposed research with at least 55% marks or equivalent grade.
• Applicants with more than 3 years industry/ teaching/ practicing/ managerial/ professional experience will be given preference.
• Relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/Differently-Abled categories or for those who had obtained their Master’s degree prior to 19th September, 1991. The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace mark procedures.

Categories of Admission

Applicants shall be admitted to the Ph.D. Programme under one of the following categories:

• Full-time Ph.D. Student (with or without fellowship) “means a person enrolled in the Ph.D. Programme devoting full-time to completing the requirements of the degree.”
• Part-Time Ph.D. Student (without fellowship) “means a person who is registered in the Ph.D. Programme devoting part of his/ her time for completing the requirements of the degree while discharging other employment obligations.”

The Ph.D (Law) programme offers candidates an opportunity to contribute to the academic field in their chosen areas of study. ​As a part of the programme, candidates are also provided an opportunity to teach or participate in ongoing research at NLSIU, in areas related to their dissertation, allowing for deeper integration with the NLSIU community and providing diverse feedback opportunities.

Eligibility for Ph.D. (Law)

The following candidates shall be eligible to apply for the Ph.D. (Law) programme:

a) Candidates having a 5-year/ 10-semester/ 15-trimester bachelor’s degree programme in Law through regular mode from a recognized University having secured a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed (70% of marks or its equivalent grade in case of SC/ST/OBC- NCL/Persons with Disability.)

b) Candidates having a 3-year/ 6-semester/ 9-trimester bachelor’s degree programme in Law (LL.B.) through regular mode from a recognized University having secured a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed (70% of marks or its equivalent grade in case of SC/ST/OBC-NCL Persons with Disability); and

c) Candidates having a Masters in Law degree (LL.M.) through regular mode from a recognized University having secured an aggregate of at least 55% marks or its equivalent grade (50% of marks or its equivalent grade in case of SC/ST/OBC-NCL)/ Persons with Disability);

d) Candidates having passed the Solicitors Examination conducted by the Bombay Incorporated Law Society and having a completed a bachelor’s in Law (LL.B./LL.B. (Hons.)) degree from a recognized University through regular mode; or

(e) Candidates having a Master of Business Laws (MBL) degree from the National Law School of India University with minimum CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) of 4.00 and having completed a bachelor’s degree from a recognized University through regular mode.

Provided that candidates in their final year of study in the respective degrees in (a), (b) and (c) shall be eligible to apply, subject to the candidate securing the minimum marks or equivalent grade prior to July 2024.

International Students

Candidates can apply for the NLSAT – International Examination for “international student” category, if they fulfil the following conditions:

• They should be a citizen of a country other than India; AND
• They should have completed a minimum of ten years of their education in a school/college/university outside India.

Admission Process

Admission to the programme will be through an all-India written admissions test, the National Law School Admissions Test (NLSAT-PhD). Candidates shall submit the application form duly filled up along with a research proposal of about 6-8 pages. The application form is available here.

The research proposal should contain: i. Tentative Title ii. Statement of the problem and the background information on the subject. iii. A brief outline of the research design including a set of research questions, a brief review of the relevant literature on the issue identified for research, a research hypothesis (where applicable) and the proposed methodology. Students who demonstrate a firm grasp of these foundational issues will be awarded higher marks.

The NLSAT-PhD shall have the following scheme: a) Research Aptitude: 50 marks b) Essays/Answers on relevant topics pertaining to law/ other disciplines: 50 marks

Candidates securing not less than 50% marks on the aggregate in the written test will qualify for evaluation of their Research Proposal and making an oral presentation before a Panel of Experts on the date specified by the University.

Selection Process

Candidates will be selected based on the marks obtained by the candidate in the NLSAT- PhD, the research proposal, and the oral presentation. The weightage of each score component shall be as follows:

a) NLSAT-PhD: 50% b) Research Proposal: 35% c) Oral Presentation: 15%

Important Dates

• The National Law School Admissions Test-PhD (NLSAT-PhD) will be held on March 17, 2024 (Sunday), from 10.00 am to 12.30 pm in specified centres across the country. The duration of the test shall be 150 minutes.
• Application deadline has been extended to 11:59 pm IST, on February 28, 2024. View official notification. An application fee of Rs. 3000/- (Rupees Three Thousand Only) shall be payable at the time of submission of the application.
• The dates for the oral presentation shall be announced after the completion of the NLSAT-PhD. They are likely to be held in April – May 2024.
• Classes for coursework component of the Ph.D. programme shall commence in the University in July 2024.

The maximum number of Ph. D seats for the Academic Year 2024-25 are 8 (Eight). This includes 4 in Ph.D (Law) and 4 in Ph.D (Interdisciplinary). The University reserves the right not to fill all the seats where sufficient candidates do not satisfy the admission requirements.

For International Students

The total amount payable at the time of admission by foreign students for AY 2024-25 is Rs. 2,55,000/- as provided below:

Registration Fee – one time 90,000/- Course Work Fee – one time 90,000/- Annual Fee 75,000/- Total fee – per annum 2,55,000/-

The University’s PhD programme in the previous year was offered in terms of the Ph.D. Degree Programme Regulations, 2021. The Regulations have been revised since the Academic Year 2023-24.

NLSIU currently offers two Ph.D programmes:

– The Ph.D. (Law) programme allows a candidate to contribute academically in the field of law; – The Ph.D. (Interdisciplinary) involves research across disciplines to arrive at a more comprehensive perspective and solution for a particular problem.

b) Candidates having a 3-year/ 6-semester/ 9-trimester bachelor’s degree programme in Law (LL.B.) through regular mode from a recognized University having secured a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed (70% of marks or its equivalent grade in case of SC/ST/OBC-NCL Persons with Disability); and

Provided that candidates in their final year of study in the respective degrees in (a), (b) and (c) shall be eligible to apply, subject to the candidate securing the minimum marks or equivalent grade prior to the date of the commencement of Ph.D.

No, there is no age limit to apply for the programmes.

Note: While submitting the application for the admission test, candidates should also submit a research proposal of about 6-8 pages. The research proposal should contain: i. Tentative Title ii. Statement of the problem and the background information on the subject. iii. A brief outline of the research design including a set of research questions, a brief review of the relevant literature on the issue identified for research, a research hypothesis (where applicable) and the proposed methodology. Students who demonstrate a firm grasp of these foundational issues will be awarded higher marks.

The University shall conduct a written test (NLSAT-Ph.D) along the following scheme:

a) Research Aptitude – 50 marks b) Essays on relevant topics pertaining to law/ other disciplines – 50 marks 

The list of selected candidates as above shall be displayed on the NLSIU website.

Candidates are required to be present at the NLSIU campus for the duration of their coursework spread over three trimesters. Course work is compulsory for all the Ph.D. candidates.

The first component of the course work must be completed during the first trimester upon their admission. The remaining two trimesters of the course work needs to be completed within the first two academic years.  

a) The candidate will have to complete a minimum of three (3) years’ research in their chosen subject, including the mandatory course work as provided in these Regulations.

b) Maximum period: The maximum duration of the Ph.D. programme shall be six (6) years* from the date of admission in the Ph.D. programme, subject to the fulfilment of the requirements per the Regulations.

*- Provided that candidates who are Persons with Disabilities (having more than 40% disability) may be allowed a relaxation of upto two (2) years; however, the total period for completion of a Ph.D. programme in such cases should not exceed eight (8) years from the date of admission in the Ph.D. programme; – Provided further that female Ph.D. candidates may be provided Maternity Leave/ Child Care Leave for up to 240 days in the entire duration of the Ph.D. programme; however, the total period for completion of a Ph.D. programme in such cases should not exceed six (6) years and eight (8) months from the date of admission in the Ph.D. programme.

c) Failure to complete the course within the maximum period set out in point (b) above will automatically result in cancellation of registration.

There are a total of six courses that a doctoral candidate has to complete. Three of these are compulsory taught courses. Each taught course will extend for around 10 weeks and will be held on campus.

The first compulsory taught course is to be completed in the initial trimester on admission to the programme. The second compulsory taught course can be completed in the initial or any subsequent trimester (depending on when the course is offered). These two taught courses have to be completed prior to the first presentation before the Research Advisory Committee. In addition, there are also two course requirements relating to review of literature and fine-tuning of the proposal which need to be completed under the guidance of the Supervisor prior to the first presentation before the Research Advisory Committee.

The third compulsory taught course has to be completed prior to the second presentation before the Research Advisory Committee. In addition, candidates also will also need to complete the course requirement relating to teaching/research assistantships as will be decided by the Supervisor/relevant University body of the University.

There is a Research Advisory Committee for each Ph.D. scholar consisting of a Supervisor and two members (one from within NLSIU and one external member).

Depending upon the position of vacant seats in the School, admission to Ph.D. Programme will take place in July session every year. The admission schedule will be announced through advertisement on the IGNOU website and/or in national newspapers for session indicating the Disciplines which are on offer during the session. The applications will be submitted through online mode.

The objectives of the Ph.D programme in law are to enable the Researchers:-

• To conduct in-depth legal Research aiming at making significant contributions in the field of law.
• To develop critical, systematic and analytical research aptitude.
• To formulate the research design and use the tools for research effectively.
• To maximise their learning in the area of their research study, philosophy of law, jurisprudence and constitutional law.

Asha Degree: Warrants reveal new details in case of girl missing for decades

SHELBY, N.C. ( WBTV /Gray News) - A girl who went missing in North Carolina in 2000 is now believed to have been killed, according to search warrant documents released Monday.

The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office believes Asha Degree, who was 9 years old when she went missing in February 2000, was actually a victim of homicide.

Investigators think Degree’s disappearance may be linked to a family from Cleveland County.

A series of search warrant applications were made public on Monday, Sept. 16, in connection with searches recently carried out by the sheriff’s office, FBI and state investigations bureau. Law enforcement executed search warrants at multiple properties, including a home and property in Shelby, an assisted living facility in Vale, and a home in Charlotte.

The locations are owned and lived in by members of the Dedmon family. The search warrants were requested after DNA samples linked Degree with AnnaLee Dedmon Ramirez and a man named Russell Underhill, according to the documents.

Investigators believe local family played role

Degree has not been seen since she went missing the night of Feb. 14, 2000. Some of her belongings, however, were found in Burke County more than one year after her disappearance.

Degree’s backpack was discovered more than 30 miles from where she was reportedly last seen about 17 months after she went missing. The girl’s belongings were “wrapped in two sealed black plastic garbage bags” and were found along North Carolina Highway 18 near Morganton, court documents read Monday.

Two of the items in the backpack reportedly returned evidentiary results, linking DNA to AnnaLee Dedmon Ramirez, who was 13 years old at the time Degree went missing, and Underhill.

According to the documents, a sample of a hair stem taken from Degree’s undershirt appeared to match AnnaLee Dedmon Ramirez’s DNA.

There were two other sisters of AnnaLee Dedmon Ramirez who were ages 15 and 16 years old in February 2000.

Investigators now believe Degree is a “victim of homicide, with her body concealed,” authorities wrote in the search warrant application.

Because of the Dedmon sisters’ ages at that time, investigators believe “adult assistance” from their father, Roy Dedmon, and their mother, Connie Dedmon, “would have been necessary in the execution and/or concealment of the crime.”

Several people, places searched

Several search warrants were carried out for the Dedmon parents, AnnaLee Dedmon Ramirez and multiple properties associated with them.

Roy Dedmon’s home at 621 Cherryville Road is about 3.7 miles from Degree’s last known location near North Carolina Highway 18 and Wallace Grove Drive, officials said. His home and property were searched by law enforcement on Sept. 10 and Sept. 11.

Law enforcement confirmed Friday that the search was connected with Degree’s disappearance.

Roy Dedmon’s home was first searched by a drone in February.

Another one of the searched properties included an assisted living home known as North Brook Rest Home located in Vale. The assisted living facility is owned by Roy and Connie Dedmon.

Russell Underhill, the man whose DNA may be a match with what was found on Degree’s belongings, lived in “at least two facilities” operated by Roy and Connie Dedmon at the time the young girl disappeared. He resided at the North Brook Rest Home between 2002 and 2004.

Underhill died in 2004.

It was not entirely clear how Underhill was related to or connected with the Dedmons. Underhill “knew and associated with” Roy Dedmon, investigators found. Roy Dedmon was listed as Underhill’s emergency contact, according to medical records.

AnnaLee Dedmon Ramirez’s home in Charlotte was also searched, documents showed.

What was found during searches

Several items were seized from Roy Dedmon’s home on Cherryville Road.

There are reportedly 29 vehicles registered in Roy Dedmon’s name. Three green vehicles and one red truck were seen at his property in Shelby.

At least one of those older green vehicles was seized from the property last week. The vehicle resembled a car wanted in connection with Degre’s disappearance. Authorities believe Degree got into a 1970s-era green vehicle on the night she went missing.

In 2016, the FBI said they were looking for a 1970s-era green Ford Thunderbird or Lincoln Mark IV. The vehicle taken last week from the Cleveland County property was identified as an AMC Rambler.

Authorities also took a variety of computers, laptops, cellphones and records from Roy Dedmon’s home. There was also a human tooth in a plastic bag that was retrieved, according to the search warrant documents.

Roy Dedmon also had a DNA sample taken from him during that time.

Connie Dedmon does not currently live at the home on Cherryville Road, officials said, but authorities searched her home and removed two computers, flash and hard drives, a tablet, and various CDs and SD cards.

From AnnaLee Dedmon Ramirez’s home, authorities only reported seizing a Blackberry cellphone.

No human remains were found at any of the properties.

Relevance of North Carolina Highway 18

Two witnesses saw Degree walking along North Carolina Highway 18 on the night she went missing.

Roy Dedmon’s home on Cherryville Road is fewer than four miles, and about six minutes, away from where Degree was last seen by a witness.

Degree’s backpack, which contained some clothing and a book, was also found along North Carolina Highway 18, though several miles away near Morganton, which is in Burke County. The backpack was also about 7.2 miles away from Broughton Hospital, also in Morganton.

According to the released search warrants, investigators found that Roy Dedmon used to send one of his daughters to “transport patients in an unreliable vehicle to/from Broughton Hospital in Morganton,” around the time Degree disappeared. North Carolina “Highway 18 is the most logical route to travel to and from Northbrook Rest Home and/or Brighton Hospital,” investigators said.

Roy Dedmon reportedly would send his daughter, who was 16 or 17 years old at the time, and not AnnaLee Dedmon Ramirez.

Roy Dedmon denies any connection with Asha Degree

The attorney for Roy Dedmon held a press conference last week amid news of the search at his home.

The attorney confirmed that the property searched that week by the FBI and local authorities belonged to Roy Dedmon, who is reportedly in his 80s. However, the attorney said that Roy Dedmon denies any involvement in or knowledge of Degree’s disappearance.

Search warrant documents did say that Roy Dedmon did not appear to have any ties with Degree or her family.

Roy Dedmon’s attorney asked the community to not jump to any conclusions once the search warrants were released. The attorney asked the community to “let law enforcement do their job,” and to avoid spreading any rumors.

The request was made after the sheriff’s office asked the community to not spread rumors or false information amid the investigation. Some online posts had falsely claimed that a body had been found amid the FBI raid.

No body or human remains have been found by law enforcement to date.

Roy Dedmon’s attorney alluded to Underhill in his press conference, saying that he may be the one who knows what happened to Degree. The attorney said the search would “sadly link” a person to Degree’s disappearance who is “no longer living.”

Law enforcement reportedly interviewed Roy Dedmon, who maintained that he doesn’t know what happened.

There have been no arrests made in connection with Degree’s case.

About Asha Degree’s case

The FBI, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office have been investigating Degree’s disappearance for more than two decades. Degree’s family recently said that they believe the girl, who would be in her early 30s now is still alive.

The state, local and federal law enforcement agencies involved have a team dedicated to finding Degree. A $45,000 reward is available for information that leads to finding Degree.

The FBI Charlotte office previously told WBTV that they identified a number of people over the years who have been considered a “person of interest” for various reasons in this case. More specific details weren’t provided.

Timeline: Asha Degree’s disappearance

Degree went missing on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, 2000.

Around 6:15 a.m. that day, Degree’s parents woke up to find the then-9-year-old girl was missing. Both her and her backpack were gone.

Degree was reported missing by 6:30 a.m. Family members said they last saw Degree asleep in her bedroom.

Earlier that morning, at around 4 a.m., two truck drivers reported seeing a little girl walking on North Carolina Highway 18. That girl matched Degree’s description.

At that point, she was about a mile from her home.

Investigators and community members spent months looking for Degree. In August 2001, more than one year after Degree disappeared, her bookbag was found 30 miles away in Burke County.

The items in the backpack were reportedly sent to an FBI lab in Quantico, Virginia.

For years, the family remained hopeful that Degree would be found. Investigators continued to search for the missing girl in the years that followed her disappearance.

Search for Asha Degree

In 2017, investigators brought in a special FBI team in an effort to generate new leads. The team recreated the early morning hours of Degree’s disappearance. At that time, officials said there were “multiple people of interest” looked at in connection with the case.

In 2018, detectives released pictures of two items found in the girl’s backpack that didn’t belong to her. Inside the bag was a children’s book from her school library that Degree didn’t check out and a shirt that wasn’t hers.

Investigators have continued to search for Degree and have been hopeful that new technology could help them solve the case. Detective Tim Adams, with the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office, told WBTV in recent years that “technology has advanced quite a bit over the years,” which could eventually lead to answers.

The investigation continued with this week’s Cleveland County raid, though it wasn’t immediately clear that the search was tied to Degree’s disappearance. As rumors of the connection swirled, family members spoke out, including Degree’s great uncle, Jesse Jackson.

Jackson told WBTV that he was moved by the community’s continued remembrance of his niece.

“Thank God for that,” Jackson said. “I thank God that they still have hope and faith.”

Jackson said the last 24 years have been very hard on the family and that even the possibility of having more answers gives him hope of some closure for them.

“I hope and pray to God that they find her, dead or alive” Jackson said. “Then we can be at rest and that’s all I can say.”

Law enforcement officials from the FBI, Secret Service and Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office gave an update on an incident that occurred at former President Donald Trump's golf course in West Palm Beach Florida. 5 things to know about the apparent assassination attempt on Trump

A man suspected in an apparent assassination attempt targeting former President Donald Trump was charged with federal gun crimes.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw says U.S. Secret Service agents fired at a man pointing an AK-style rifle with a scope into the club as Trump was on the course.

Ryan Routh, the man who allegedly targeted former President Donald Trump in an assassination attempt in Florida, made his first appearance in federal court Monday.

The man accused of attempting to assassinate Donald Trump at his Florida golf course wrote a book last year urging Iran to kill the former president.

Donald Trump is safe after an apparent attempt to assassinate him as he played golf in Florida. Follow AP’s live coverage.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Former President Donald Trump wasn’t harmed by Sunday’s apparent assassination attempt as he golfed near his Florida club. But the second attack on his life in barely two months is likely to further unsettle an election cycle already marked by upheaval.

The man suspected in the incident, Ryan Wesley Routh , camped outside the golf course in West Palm Beach with food and a rifle for nearly 12 hours, according to court documents filed Monday. He is accused of lying in wait for the former president before a Secret Service agent opened fire, thwarting the potential attack.

Here are five things to know about what happened and where the investigation stands:

Who is the suspect?

Routh, 58, faces charges of possessing a firearm despite a prior felony conviction and of possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number. Additional charges are possible.

The suspect lived in North Carolina for most of his life before moving in 2018 to Kaaawa, Hawaii. He and his son operated a company building sheds, according to an archived version of the webpage for the business.

Routh appeared briefly in federal court in West Palm Beach on Monday. He had frequently posted on social media about the war in Ukraine and had a website where he sought to raise money and recruit volunteers to go to Kyiv to join the fight against the Russian invasion.

“Fight and die to stop aggression,” he posted on X in February 2023 about Ukraine. “Everyone should be outraged and helping.” In a video circulating online Routh said, “This is about good versus evil.”

He also wrote separately on X, “I am going to fight and die for Ukraine,” and he even traveled there.

Video shot by The Associated Press showed Routh at a small demonstration in Kyiv’s Independence Square in April 2022, two months after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an invasion of the country. A placard he was holding said: “We cannot tolerate corruption and evil for another 50+ years. End Russia for our kids.” Routh wore a blue vest with the U.S. flag on the back.

That same day, Routh also visited a makeshift memorial to “Foreigners killed by Putin.”

But Routh never served in the Ukrainian army or worked with its military, said Oleksandr Shahuri of the Foreigners Coordination Department of the Ukrainian Ground Forces Command.

Routh’s politics, meanwhile, don’t appear consistently aligned to one party or the other.

In June 2020, he offered a post on X directed at then-President Trump to say he would win reelection if he issued an executive order for the Justice Department to prosecute police misconduct. That year, he also posted in support of the Democratic presidential campaign of then-U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, who has since left the party and endorsed Trump.

However, in recent years, his posts suggest he soured on Trump, and he expressed support for President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

In July, following the assassination attempt on Trump in Pennsylvania, Routh urged Biden and Harris to visit those wounded in the shooting at the hospital and to attend the funeral of a former fire chief killed at the rally.

Voter records show he registered as an unaffiliated voter in North Carolina in 2012, most recently voting in person during the state’s Democratic Party primary in March 2024. Federal campaign finance records show Routh made 19 small political donations totaling $140 since 2019 using his Hawaii address through a political action committee that supports Democratic candidates.

Records show that while living in Greensboro, North Carolina, Routh had multiple run-ins with law enforcement. The top FBI official in the Miami, Jeffrey B. Veltri, said Routh has numerous felony charges for stolen goods between 1997 and 2010. He also was the subject of a closed investigation in 2019 when someone reported he was a felon in possession of a firearm, but Veltri said the tipster would not confirm making the report.

Routh was convicted in 2002 of possessing a weapon of mass destruction, according to online North Carolina Department of Adult Correction records.

How did this happen?

Authorities spotted a firearm poking out of shrubbery on the West Palm Beach golf course around 400 to 500 yards from where Trump was playing. As the former president was moving through the fifth hole’s fairway, an agent who was visually sweeping the area of the sixth hole’s green saw the subject, armed with what he perceived to be a rifle, and immediately discharged his firearm, said acting Director Ronald Rowe Jr. of the U.S. Secret Service.

Rowe said Routh “did not have a line of sight to the former president” and did not fire at Secret Service agents before fleeing.

Routh sped away before being captured in a neighboring county. Body camera footage of Routh’s arrest showed him walking backward with his hands over his head on the side of a road before being handcuffed and led away.

The suspect is believed to have been positioned at the tree line of the golf course from about 1:59 a.m. to 1:31 p.m. Sunday. A digital camera, a loaded SKS-style rifle with a scope and a plastic bag containing food were recovered from the area.

Trump’s protective detail has been higher than some of his peers because of his high visibility and his campaign to seek the White House again. His security was bolstered days before the July 13 assassination attempt in Pennsylvania because of a threat on Trump’s life from Iran, U.S. officials said.

What has Trump said since?

Trump initially posted, “I AM SAFE AND WELL!” and subsequently praised the Secret Service for protecting him.

But the former president pivoted Monday to the politics surrounding the incident, claiming — without evidence — that Biden and Harris comments that he is a threat to democracy had inspired the latest attempt on his life.

“Their rhetoric is causing me to be shot at,” Trump told Fox News Digital. In a subsequent post on his social media site Monday, Trump wrote that the left “has taken politics in our Country to a whole new level of Hatred, Abuse, and Distrust.” He said “it will only get worse,” then veered into comments about immigration, even though there is no evidence immigrants were involved in the incident.

The former president made those comments despite his own long history of inflammatory campaign rhetoric and advocacy for jailing or prosecuting his political enemies.

What are Biden and Harris saying?

Harris, Trump’s Democratic opponent in the presidential election, posted on X that she was “glad he is safe. Violence has no place in America.”

Biden also avoided politics in his reaction. He said Monday that the Secret Service “needs more help” and urging Congress to provide additional resources to help the agency.

“America has suffered too many times the tragedy of an assassin’s bullet,” Biden said at the start of an address to the National HBCU Week Conference in Philadelphia. “It solves nothing. It just tears the country apart. We must do everything we can to prevent it and never give it any oxygen.”

What’s next?

Trump hasn’t announced any changes to his schedule and is speaking live on X on Monday night from his Mar-a-Lago resort to launch his sons’ crypto platform. Harris met with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters at the 1.3 million-member group’s headquarters in Washington.

Still, a presidential race already rocked by Biden giving up his reelection bid and the first attack on Trump now is being further shaped by a second one. The leaders of a congressional bipartisan task force investigating Trump’s Pennsylvania shooting said they have requested a briefing by the Secret Service.

“We are thankful that the former President was not harmed, but remain deeply concerned about political violence and condemn it in all of its forms,” Reps. Mike Kelly, R-Pa., and Jason Crow, D-Colo., said in a statement.

Ryan Wesley Routh, the 58-year-old man who was arrested on Sunday in connection with what the F.B.I. described as an attempted assassination on former President Donald J. Trump , had expressed the desire to fight and die in Ukraine.

Mr. Routh’s posts on the social media site X revealed a penchant for violent rhetoric in the weeks after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. “I AM WILLING TO FLY TO KRAKOW AND GO TO THE BORDER OF UKRAINE TO VOLUNTEER AND FIGHT AND DIE,” he wrote.

On the messaging application Signal, Mr. Routh wrote that “Civilians must change this war and prevent future wars” as part of his profile bio. On WhatsApp, his bio read, “Each one of us must do our part daily in the smallest steps help support human rights, freedom and democracy; we each must help the chinese.”

Mr. Routh, a former roofing contractor from Greensboro, N.C., was interviewed by The New York Times in 2023 for an article about Americans volunteering to aid the war effort in Ukraine . Mr. Routh, who had no military experience, said he had traveled to the country after Russia’s invasion and wanted to recruit Afghan soldiers to fight there.

In a telephone interview with The New York Times in 2023, when Mr. Routh was in Washington, he spoke with the self-assuredness of a seasoned diplomat who thought his plans to support Ukraine’s war effort were sure to succeed. But he appeared to have little patience for anyone who got in his way. When an American foreign fighter seemed to talk down to him in a Facebook message he shared with The New York Times, Mr. Routh said, “he needs to be shot.”

In the interview, Mr. Routh said he was in Washington to meet with the U.S. Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, known as the Helsinki Commission “for two hours” to help push for more support for Ukraine. The commission is led by members of Congress and staffed by congressional aides . It is influential on matters of democracy and security and has been vocal in supporting Ukraine.
