How To Close A Bank Account

As your banking needs change, you may find yourself in a situation where you need to close a bank account. It could be that you’re moving and need to find a new bank or want to switch banks to take advantage of better interest rates. Whatever the reason, you’ll likely want to close your old bank account.

Closing a bank account isn’t complicated, but there are actions you can take to ensure the account is closed correctly—and all of your money accounted for. Follow these steps when closing a bank account.

Reasons for Closing a Bank Account

You don’t need a reason to close a bank account. However, there are numerous reasons you might want to. Here are some of the more common reasons to move on from your current account:

  • You’re moving to a new city or state
  • You can get better interest rates
  • You’re switching to an online bank
  • You qualify for a bank bonus offer
  • You want to escape poor customer service
  • You’re being charged expensive fees
  • You can get better features and services elsewhere
  • You’re opening a joint account
  • You’re consolidating your bank accounts
  • You’re switching from a child account to an adult account

Whatever the reason, consider the decision carefully to ensure you’re making the right moves for your financial situation.

How to Close a Bank Account

Closing a bank account involves more than contacting your bank. You’ll want to do some advance work to ensure a successful transition. The specifics for closing an account vary by bank and credit union. Be sure to check your banking institution for special requirements. Generally, follow the steps below.

1. Open a New Account

The first thing you need to do is open a new bank account. Having an account in place ensures you have a place to transfer direct deposits and payments or debits.

Many factors go into choosing a new bank, including savings rates , fees and account offerings. Whether you decide on a traditional brick-and-mortar bank or an online bank , ensure you’ve established your new account before moving forward.

2. Switch Your Existing Scheduled Payments and Deposits

If you have any direct deposits or automatic payments set up, move them to the new account. Check with your employer regarding any forms you need to fill out for direct deposit so your paycheck can be rerouted to the new account.

Do yourself a favor and make a list of your monthly recurring payments. This could include:

  • Car payments
  • Mortgage payments
  • Insurance payments
  • Student or personal loans
  • Credit card payments
  • Gym memberships
  • Streaming services
  • Utilities and other household bills

Having a list helps ensure you’ve canceled all of the payments attached to your old account, but you’ll also be prepared when you need to set them up for your new bank account.

3. Transfer Your Money

Before you move money out of your account, let outstanding transactions clear. Failure to do so could result in having to pay overdraft fees . If you still have money in the account after everything clears, withdraw the money or transfer it to your new account.

If your bank account has a minimum balance requirement, only transfer money out of the account when you’re ready to close it so that you’re not charged a monthly maintenance fee.

4. Contact Your Bank

Cancel your bank account. Many financial institutions allow you to do this online, but it could require a phone call to customer service or a visit to a local bank branch. Some banks and credit unions may require you to fill out an account closure request form or submit a written request. Follow your bank’s guidance on the proper contact method to start the closure process.

The bank will check your account to ensure it’s in good standing and that you’ve resolved any outstanding issues before it marks the account as closed. If there are any remaining funds in the account, you should be able to request a transfer to your new account or receive a check by mail.

5. If Required, Send a Letter to Close Your Bank Account

You can write a letter to your bank to close an account. To do so, you can use the template below or a similar format.

To whom it may concern,

Please close the following bank account(s):

  • List account name and account number for each closing request

Please send a check for any remaining funds in those accounts to the address below. Please follow up with written confirmation to verify the previously mentioned accounts have been closed.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

6. Get Written Confirmation

Don’t assume that the account is closed. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau recommends getting written confirmation when you close a bank account. This protects you if the bank doesn’t follow through or some issue arises.

How to Close Certain Types of Bank Accounts

Not all account closures are handled the same. Other scenarios may pop up that require extra steps to close a bank account. Here’s a look at a few examples that might require extra attention.

Joint Account

Your bank may require an account closure request with both account holders’ signatures if you’re closing a joint account. Many banks, however, only require one account holder’s authorization. Canceling a joint account online could require both parties to request an account closure.

Child’s Account

Some bank accounts are automatically converted into regular accounts when a child turns 18. If you’re of your state’s legal age to take complete control of your custodial account, you can close the account the same as any other bank account.

Inactive Account

If your account has been marked “Inactive,” you’ll need to reactivate it before it can be closed by the bank. Contact your bank’s customer service to reactivate your bank account. There might also be an option to do this through your online or mobile banking.

Overdrawn Account

Having an overdrawn account could prevent you from closing an account. You’ll need to get your account to a zero balance or higher before the bank will process your closure request.

Deceased Person’s Account

Closing the bank account of a loved one who has passed away can be more complicated than closing other accounts. How the account is handled depends mainly on how the deceased structured their finances, including whether they listed a beneficiary or had a will. Requirements and documentation may depend on state law. Your best bet is to seek legal counsel before proceeding.

Can You Close a Bank Account Online?

Many banks allow you to close an account online. It’s especially common among online banks. Some enable you to close an account via online messaging or email. Others offer chat features that let you close an account through customer support.

Contact your bank to figure out options. Ensure your account is in good standing and has a zero balance before you try to close it.

How Much Does It Cost to Close a Bank Account?

Typically, it doesn’t cost anything to close a checking, savings or money market account. Time-deposit accounts, such as certificates of deposit (CDs), may issue a penalty. Most banks and credit unions charge an early withdrawal penalty if you close a CD account before its maturity date.

How Long Does It Take to Close a Bank Account?

Closing a bank account can be a quick process, especially if you’ve already transferred funds from the account and accounted for any lingering transactions. If you’ve already withdrawn or transferred funds to another account, the closing process may only take a few minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Does closing a bank account hurt your credit.

Bank accounts are different from credit card accounts and aren’t part of your credit report. Closing a bank account doesn’t affect your credit score or history. Although financial institutions report account closures to ChexSystems , opting to close a bank account doesn’t impact your ChexSystems report.

How do you get money from a closed bank account?

If you close a bank account but still have funds in the account, you should receive a check from the bank for the remaining funds. If your local bank branch closes, you still have access to your account and funds at other bank branches or online. When a bank shuts down all of its operations, you can contact the FDIC directly to inquire about outstanding funds.

Can a bank close your account without notice?

Your bank account could be closed by your bank for many reasons, including inactivity or low usage. Banks aren’t required to give notice when they close an account. Consult your bank’s deposit account agreement for guidelines on when an account might be closed.

Can a closed bank account be reopened?

You can reopen a closed bank account in some instances, depending on your bank’s policies. If allowed, typically, you can do this by making a request either in person, by phone or online. If not, you can simply open a new account.

Can I close my bank account and open a new one with the same bank?

Yes, banks allow you to close one account and open another one. The process to close the old account is the same, although you’ll find your bank much happier to keep your business.

How long can my bank account be negative before it closes?

Typically, banks will keep accounts with negative balances open until they are brought up to a zero balance or higher. Bank policy dictates how accounts are handled. Your bank may close your bank account and report you to a debit bureau like ChexSystems, which could hurt your chances of opening another bank account.

How long do banks keep records of old accounts?

Banks are required to keep records of old checking and savings accounts for at least five years.

If my bank account is closed, what happens to my direct deposit?

If an employer sends direct deposit funds to a closed bank account, they are returned to the original sender. If this happens, contact the sender immediately with alternative account information so they can send the funds to a new account. You can avoid this by updating your direct deposit information with your employer.

Letter to Close Bank Accounts

Other ways to close your account, tips for a successful account closure, the bottom line, frequently asked questions (faqs).

Sometimes an old-fashioned letter is the best way to get the job done. To close a bank account, you might be required to mail your request in a traditional letter or submit it in person at a bank branch. There's no need to wait on hold or in line, explain yourself to customer service, and hope that the account is closed expeditiously—you can just send the letter and be done with it.

Even if a letter isn’t required, using one creates a paper trail that may give you peace of mind, should any errors or complications arise.

Use the text below as a template and fill in the information between brackets as necessary. See the tips below the letter for more details and other easy ways to close an account.

There might be easier ways to close your account. If you don’t want to print, sign, and mail a letter, try a digital or more personal approach. In some cases, banks may prefer one of these methods over a letter. Check your bank's website to see what steps they recommend taking.

Submit an Online Request

Online banks allow you to transfer all of your funds out and request a closure online. It can be as easy as clicking “Close Account.” Other banks require you to write a request to customer service while you’re logged in to your account.

Call Customer Service

A quick phone call might also do the trick. If you’ve got a few minutes, just call customer service and ask to close your account. Be prepared for a few attempts at keeping your business, which you can firmly (but politely) decline.

In many cases, submitting a written, online, or over-the-phone request is all you need to do to close an account. However, you can take extra steps to ensure the process goes as smoothly as possible. Before you finalize your account closure, review these optional steps and special scenarios.

Make Sure You're Done

Before closing your account, double-check to make sure there are no outstanding checks or automatic payments scheduled to hit your account. Change your direct deposit instructions to your new account, and wait to see that the update has taken place before you close an account.

Empty It Yourself

It is usually best to empty your bank account before you send the letter to close it. In most cases, transferring the funds yourself will get the money in your hands more quickly than if you wait for the bank to process your request.

There are several free and easy ways to send funds to yourself electronically, including basic bank-to-bank transfers . Apps and non-bank  services for sending money can also do the job.

If you do it yourself, you’ll know exactly when and where to expect the money. The alternative is to wait for a check in the mail (which you’ll have to deposit before you can withdraw and spend the money). Be careful not to empty your old account too soon if there are pending fees or charges. A fee or charge that you can't cover could complicate and delay the process.

Be Direct, But Polite

To  close your bank account , you just need to make the request (whether it’s in writing or by clicking a button). The wording isn't the most important thing. It’s not necessary to instruct them to do it “promptly” or “immediately” because they will do it as soon as possible anyway.

Banks do not drag their feet on these things until somebody notices and applies pressure. Just make it easy for the person who opens your letter (tell them exactly what to do and where to send the money), and it’s more likely to get done quickly and accurately. If you have complaints about the bank or its services, send that feedback separately and wait until after your account is closed.

Download Statements or Transactions

Once you close your account, you may lose access to your account history. Someday, you may wish you had a record of an important transaction. Download several years’ worth of statements before you close your account—just in case. Alternatively, download your transactions into a software program that stores the information for you.

You May Need to Provide an Original Signature

You may be required to sign your letter with ink, rather than with an e-signature or stamp, depending on bank policy. If a bank asks for a written letter, a component of that requirement may include a real signature to authorize the account closure.

Use Wire Transfers or Cashier's Checks in Time-Sensitive Situations

If you  really  need the money to move immediately and be available for spending, send the money to your new account by wire transfer . Alternatively, get a cashier's check , which will cost a bit less and still provide "cleared" funds.

Changes of Address Can Delay the Process

If you’re closing the account because you’ve moved, be aware that bank policies typically only allow them to send funds to your address of record (the address they currently have on file at the bank). Address changes followed by check requests could potentially raise a red flag—they could worry an identity thief is attempting to steal your money. If the bank questions the legitimacy of the transfer, you may have to wait longer for your money, or you may have to do additional paperwork and  get your request notarized .

Ask your bank what is required to mail a check to a new address (better yet, get the money out yourself, as described above).

If you use a credit union, you might not need to close your account just because you've moved. Many credit unions participate in shared branching, which allows you to  use a different credit union's branches (with thousands of locations available to you nationwide). You might eventually need an account at a local institution for more complex needs—or you might be just fine using your old account.

Use an App to Deposit the Check

If the bank sends a check for the leftover money in the closed account, you'll need to deposit that check somewhere—and many people these days hardly ever deal with paper checks. The easiest way to make that deposit is with your new bank's mobile app (if available).

Verify the Closure

Don’t just assume your instructions will be followed. Double-check by logging in to your account or calling the bank to ensure that your account is closed. Sometimes instructions get lost, or something needs to be done before you can close the account. If you’re not aware of problems that arise, you risk having inactivity charges or low balance fees charged to your account. They might not be your fault, but it’s easier to clean everything up while it’s fresh in your mind.

While not always required, using a hand-signed letter to request an account closure is an easy way to add an extra layer of financial protection. If any complications or errors occur during the process, you have handwritten and dated proof of key details like what exactly you requested, when you requested it, and where any remaining funds were supposed to go—just remember to keep a copy for yourself.

If the process does go awry at some point, make sure to reach out as soon as you notice the discrepancies. Be direct in your conversations with customer service, but don't burn bridges. Rude comments won't speed up the process, only clear communication will.

If you still have questions about the process, you can read more about what to do  before you change banks  or how to close a joint checking account .

There are many ways to transfer money to another bank account. You can directly transfer the money to another account via ACH transfer . You can use a payment app like Venmo. You can use a money order or personal check. You can also withdraw the cash and physically bring it to your new bank, but that may be unnecessarily burdensome when so many digital options exist.

Key Takeaways

  • An old-fashioned letter can be the most straightforward way to close a bank account because it helps ensure clear instructions and creates a reliable paper trail.
  • Before closing an account, make sure all automatic transactions are updated, and consider manually transferring funds to avoid delays.
  • Alternative methods such as online requests or phone calls can also be effective, but always verify the closure to avoid unexpected fees or issues.

Closing a bank account can be a daunting task, especially when you're required to write a letter. Yes, banks can demand that, and you'll have to do it.

On the plus side, this little obligation can save you a lot of trouble. You won't have to wait in line at your local branch or talk to personal bankers. Your only concern will be writing the letter and submitting it either through email or at a bank branch—that depends on what they ask you to do. Another benefit of writing the letter is having a paper trail of your request to close your account, in case it erroneously stays active.

You're likely wondering, “How to write a bank account closure letter?” and “How should I format it?” In this article, we walk you through all the steps to writing and formatting the letter, including a sample and a template.

Why write a letter for closing a bank account?

Writing a bank account termination letter is a traditional, straightforward way to close a bank account while avoiding staying on lines or talking to customer service. Some banks may offer other means to close accounts, such as calling or visiting a financial center, but some don't.

For instance, to close a transaction or savings account at Heritage Bank, clients are required to fill up a form with personal info (i.e. name, email, account number) and clear instructions on what to do with the account. If the account has multiple holders, all of them have to sign the document.

While this seems outdated, letters to close bank accounts are an effective way to guarantee an account is being closed—and that you really asked for it—as both you and the bank will have physical proof of your request.

How to write a bank account termination letter?

A bank account close letter is a simple and concise document. You don't need to say much besides your request for account termination. Here's a step by step guide on how to write it:

1. Address the letter

Like every letter, a bank account close letter starts with a salutation to the recipient. You can address the bank manager by name, if you know it, or use standard salutations, such as “Dear Bank Manager” or “To Whom It May Concern.” In other scenarios—such as sending a cover letter to a hiring manager—“To Whom It May Concern” can sound harsh, but in this specific case, it's acceptable.

2. State your request

This type of letter is very straight to the point, so your next step is stating your account termination request. Do it with a clear and concise sentence, such as “I'm writing to request the closure of my checking account with [bank name]” or “I would like to request my savings account closure.”

3. Give necessary information

The next step is providing all the necessary personal information the banker needs to fulfill your request. This includes your account number, your full name, mailing address and phone number, and the names of the other account holders, if any. Since procedures change between banks, you should check with your bank (over a call or their website), what personal information they need from you to close the account.

4. Add balance transfer request, if any

If you have any balance left and didn't transfer it to another account yet, you can request it to be done for you. In this case, you'll have to also provide the information of the other account, including the name of the bank, account number, branch location, and account name. Be sure to check on your bank website or give them a call to know what information should be included in the letter.

You can also request the bank to send you a written confirmation of the account termination. Generally, banks do inform clients that their account has been closed anyway, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

5. Close and sign the letter

Next, finish the letter with a formal closing. You can say something along the lines of “Thank you for your attention” and “Let me know if you need any more information,” and sign with your name and last name.

Before submitting your letter, take a few minutes to review the document and search for grammar mistakes or incorrect information. It's important that every personal data provided is correct so your request can be fulfilled promptly, and your remaining money gets sent to the right account (if applicable).

How to submit a bank account close letter?

As mentioned, some banks may accept a bank account termination letter via email. However, some banks might request that you send your request in writing and send it via mail—one example is Bank of America. In their FAQ , you can find the PO Box addresses for checking and savings accounts and for credit card accounts.

The Heritage Bank doesn't accept handwritten letters, but has a preformatted account closure form that clients download at their website , fill up, and submit at a local branch. To be certain you're doing the right procedure, remember to check your bank's website.

What's the bank account close letter format?

Bank account closing letters have a simple letter format you've probably seen multiple times in your life. It goes salutation, body, closing, and signature—in this exact order. There's no specific font type, size, or color to use, but considering it's a formal letter and a document, it's best to go with the basics: Sans Serif, Arial, or Tahoma in regular size and black.

One point of attention: if you need to submit your letter in writing, like Bank of America requests, you'll have to add your and the recipient's info on the envelope, like it's traditionally done. For example:

[Your Name]

[Your Address]

[City, State, Zip Code]

You may also want to add it at the top of your letter, including your email and phone number. Below, we added a sample and a template to illustrate how your letter should look like.

Extra tips to close your bank account

Before closing, or making a request to close, your bank account there are a couple of actions you should take to make this process as smooth as possible. Here's everything you need to do:

  • Update automatic transactions: If you have automatic payments, deposits, and transfers linked to the account you're about to close, be sure to cancel or update it to the account you'll be using moving forward.
  • Transfer funds: If you have funds left, transfer them to another account. You can also request the bank to do it for you, but since you don't know exactly when your request will be fulfilled, maybe you should do it yourself in case you need the money.
  • Review account activity: Make sure there's no transaction pending or unknown activity. This is important to avoid late fees and sort out with the bank any potential issues with your account that you haven't seen before.
  • Update contact information: After closing your account, the bank most likely will send you confirmation. To ensure you'll receive it, and any communication from the bank, update your contact information if it's out of date.
  • Return bank items: If you have a card attached to your account, you may want to return it to the bank.

Finally, after you make the account closure request, continue to monitor your account to confirm everything went well with the updates made. If possible, keep records of the termination and any communications with the bank in case the account remains active and you need to file a complaint.

Things to Remember Before Submitting Bank Account Close Application

Closing a bank account isn’t a decision you should rush into. It requires careful consideration and a few important steps to ensure everything is handled correctly. Here’s what you need to keep in mind:

  • Clear your Balances: Make sure you don’t owe anything to the bank. Pay off any pending debts or loans associated with your account. This way, you’re free of obligations, preventing any hiccups in the closure process.
  • Stop Automatic Transactions: Review your account for any automatic payments or deposits. This includes utility bill payments, EMIs, or salary deposits. You’ll want to redirect these to another bank account before you initiate the closure.
  • Maintain the Required Balance: Until your account is officially closed, continue maintaining the minimum balance to avoid penalties. Unexpected charges can cause complications, and nobody wants that headache.
  • Open a New Account before Closure: It’s wise to have another functional bank account ready to go. This is crucial because you’ll need somewhere to redirect your funds and automatic transactions.
  • Transfer your Funds: Before sending the application for closing the bank account, transfer your remaining funds to your new account. It’s better to handle this yourself for a quicker process.
  • Notify Relevant Parties: Inform individuals and organizations about your change in bank details if they regularly send you money or draft from your account. This could include your workplace, insurance providers, or family members.
  • Collect Necessary Documents: Depending on the bank, you might need certain documents to close your account. These can include identity proof, a new bank account statement (if transferring funds), or the application for closing your bank account. Have these handy to avoid multiple trips to the bank.
  • Get a Written Confirmation: Once your account is closed, request a written statement from the bank confirming the account closure. This document is proof that you’re no longer liable for any charges or transactions associated with the old account.
  • Check for Digital Footprints: If you used online or mobile banking, ensure you log out from all devices and uninstall or at least stop using the bank’s app once your account is closed to secure your digital safety.
  • Understand the Terms and Conditions: Finally, be aware of any closure charges or terms that were in the fine print when you opened your account. Some banks require your account to be active for a certain duration before you can close without incurring extra fees.

Frequently Asked Questions on Application for Closing Bank Account

What is the online process of closing a bank account?

The online process varies by bank. Generally, you'd log into your online banking platform, navigate to the services or customer support section, and select the option for account closure. How do I close a bank account permanently?

To close your account permanently, you must submit an application for closing the bank account to your bank. This can be done by visiting your bank branch in person or, in some cases, through online banking. Ensure all debts are paid and funds are transferred before closure.

How to Write a Letter to Close Your Bank Account

' src=

  • November 7, 2019

A man sitting down to a table to write a letter.

Although the number of people switching banks is steadily declining, sometimes it’s still necessary to close a bank account. According to a J.D. Power survey , only 4% of Americans changed banks in 2018, down from 8% in 2016, with dissatisfaction concerning problem resolution being the number one reason that people change banks. Moving, excessive fees , inconvenient branch or ATM locations, and issues with fraud are also common reasons customers opt to close their accounts .

When closing a bank account, it’s likely that your bank will require a written request to do so. They may provide a specific form or template to use, but if they don’t, you must write a letter. You don’t need to explain your reasons for closing the account. A simple letter that lists the specific account numbers and instructions for the remaining funds will suffice. By sending a bank account closing letter, you won’t have to wait on hold or have an awkward conversation with a representative trying to convince you to keep your account, and you’ll have a written record of your request.

Sample Bank Account Closing Letter

The following is a bank sample letter for closing an account you can copy/download and personalize.

[Your Name] [Your Address] [Your City, State, ZIP Code] [Bank Name] [Bank Address] [Bank City, State, ZIP Code] [Date]

RE: Account Closure Request

To Whom It May Concern: This is a formal request to close the following accounts (fill in account numbers as needed): Checking [Account Number] Savings [Account Number ] Money Market Account [Account Number] Other Account [Account Number] All automatic recurring transactions for these accounts have been canceled. Please send confirmation of the account closure and a check payable to me for the remaining balance(s) to the following address: [Address] [City, State, ZIP] If you have questions regarding this request, I can be reached at [Your phone number]. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. Sincerely, [Your Name] [Your Signature] [Co-Account Holder’s Name] (if necessary) [Co-Account Holder’s Signature]

Again, your letter should be simple and direct. You do not need to explain why you are closing the account, and if you have complaints, send a separate letter to customer service outlining the problems after the account is closed. Your letter should make it as easy as possible for the bank to close your account, and contain only the information necessary for that to happen.

Before mailing your letter, check with your bank to confirm the specific address where it needs to be sent. Some banks have dedicated addresses or P.O. Boxes for these requests. You may also be able to fax or mail the request to a local branch.

Other Ways to Close a Bank Account

A bank account closing letter isn’t the only way to close an account. Other options include:

Visiting the bank in person . Stop into a local branch and speak to a representative to close your account. You will likely be asked to sign an account closure document. This is a good time to withdraw the remaining balance from your account as well so you do not have to wait for the bank to mail you a check.

Online.  Some banks will allow you to close your account online. Depending on the bank it might be as simple as clicking a few buttons, while others may require a written request via a secure message system. With the online option , you can also request a transfer of the remaining balance to a different account.

Via  Phone.  Generally speaking, banks require account closure requests in writing, but you may be able to initiate the process over the phone. Depending on your bank, they may be able to send you paperwork to sign to close the account, or you may be directed to an online account management system.

Before closing your bank account, cancel any automatic withdrawals, such as automatic payments or transfers to other accounts. Failing to do so could lead to fees or penalties when transactions are declined. Also, don’t withdraw all of your money until all pending transactions have cleared. If you have direct deposit, confirm that your deposits are being sent to your new account before closing your old one, to avoid losing access to your money or other problems.

Make Sure Your Account Is Closed

After closing your account by mail, wait a few days before confirming that it’s been done. Logging in to your account or calling the bank is the easiest way to do this.

Even if you send clear instructions, there could be delays, or the bank could require additional information or steps before the account is officially closed. If you withdraw all of your money, you could incur low balance, account inactivity, or account maintenance fees even if you have closed the account, so double-checking that the account is actually closed is important. The bank will most likely send you a letter confirming the request to close the account; keep that letter with a copy of the letter you sent on file in the event that there are any questions or problems.

Also, before closing your account, download all of your statements so you maintain a record of all of your transactions. Once your account is closed, you may lose access to the information, and you may need details about specific transactions in the future.
