Vuil Wasgoed

This full-length feature film tells a light-hearted story of Wim and Kevin who have been dreaming about owning a coffee shop for years. While they wait for their dream to become a reality, they find temporary work at a laundromat.

However, as fate would have it. Their dream drifts further and further away and the highlight of their existence becomes borrowing their clients’ clothes to crash parties at night. During one of the parties, they discover a chopped-off finger in a client’s jacket.

This discover leads to a series of classic comedy scenes featuring the underhanded owner of the finger, his sons and a ruthless traitor on the search for Wim and Kevin.

Vuil Wasgoed recently won the awards for Best Director (Morné du Toit), Best Editing (Quinn Lubbe), Best Actor (Bennie Fourie), Best Production Design (Merishen Wessels) and Best Sound Design (Janno Muller)and Original Music (Benjamin Willem) at the Silwerskerm Festival 2017.

Vaselinetjie

Vaselinetjie tells a story of a white girl, Helena, raised by her coloured grandparents in a remote rural village in the Northern Cape of South Africa. However, when the welfare services find out that Helena is not their biological grandchild, she is sent off to an orphanage in the city of Johannesburg.

Life in Joburg is harsh, cold and strange to Helena - she soon realises that life is not what it seemed. It successfully and beautifully tells a story about defining your identity and race within the turmoil of post Apartheid South Africa. Vaselinetjie won Best Film honours at the Silverskerm Festival 2017.

Johnny is nie dood nie

Set in 2002, Johnny is nie dood nie (Johnny is not dead) begins with four friends having a braai together after Johnny’s suicide.

They reminisce about their student days when they were young, drunken rebels saturare in the protest mist of Kerkorrel, Koos Kombuis and Bernoldus Niemand. The death of their friend remains a mystery and haunts them to no end.

Johnny is nie dood nie tells a story about friendship and betrayal, sexual and political liberation, the loss of innocence and compromise.

Set in 1901, Modder en Bloed is a period film that follows a Boer and family man, Willem Morkel, whose wife and son are murdered during the Anglo-Boer War.

As a prisoner of war, Willem fights to survive the incarceration in the notorious St. Helena concentration camp where placed under terrible oppression and hardship lead to an uprising through human spirit and more specifically, the game of rugby.

This film is a fictional account using the backdrop of Anglo-Boer War. The film's protagonist is loosely based on Dougie Morkel, who went on to play for the South African national rugby union team.

Adriana Wolfaardt, a ballet teacher, decides to spend some time alone on her and her husband’s farm, Duiwelslaagte . En route, she picks up who she thinks is her husband’s cousin…but is he?

2- Wolwedans in die Skemer

Translated, the title means “dance of the wolves at dusk.”

The story deals with a pretty young woman, Sonja Daneel, who’s involved in a serious car accident after spotting a wolf on the road. This is significant, since no wolf has ever been spotted in these woods.

She completely loses her memory after hitting her head in the accident.

She remains working as a receptionist at the luxurious lobby of Hotel Njala, but, of course, all is not as benign and harmless as it seems… With the help of a police constable, Sonja starts piecing back her identity (which is the reason she works at Hotel Njala).

Watch this tale of family intrigue, brutal serial killings, and a farm called Wolwedans in one of the most picturesque areas of South African inland.

Wolwedans is one of the slicker Afrikaans productions on the scene, and is based on a riveting radio story of the same name. It was written and produced by South African author and movie maker Leon van Nierop.

2. Afrikaans Comedy Movies

As we mentioned earlier, the Afrikaans people love to laugh, which means that there are plenty of Afrikaans comedy movies around. Get your share of fun in Afrikaans with these popular movies.

1- Semi Soet

One of South Africa’s most successful romantic comedies, Semi Soet tells the story of a young advertising executive, Jaci, who would do everything in her power to save her company from landing in the jaws of a giant corporation. This can only be done if she lands a contract with a prestigious wine farm estate, Vrede en Lust.

To do this, Jaci has to jump through several hilarious hoops on her prospective client’s beautiful farm. And, of course, there’s a big surprise in the plot for the heroine…

Funny and convincing, this romcom gained four stars on IMDb . An easy and entertaining view, it’s ideal for whiling away a lazy Saturday afternoon.

2- Liefling, die Movie

In African movies, a love story is always appreciated.

Probably the best known of all Afrikaans musical movies, this 2010 romcom was a blockbuster in South Africa. Theaters filled to watch the story of a young, beautiful woman, an engineer student, and their obstructed path toward each other and true love.

The male lead is played by one of South Africa’s most beloved and successful male singers, Bobbie van Jaarsveld.

Quote: Wanneer jy jou eerste liefde ontmoet, is dit soos ‘n sprokies verhaal. Translation: “When you meet your first love, it is like a fairy tale.”

3- Vir die Voëls

This is yet another romantic Afrikaans movie, but differs from the others. Irma, young and pretty, isn’t your run-of-the-mill girl at all. She’s headstrong, and not a follower of societal norms. Of course, her free spirit lands her in trouble many times, but how did she end up in front of the pulpit?

4- Hollywood in my Huis

Jana is one of her school’s losers. Pretty but not popular, she nevertheless dreams of accompanying the school’s heartthrob, Brandon, to their Matric Farewell dance. She makes plans to change her destiny, but of course, not all goes as planned.

5- Die Windpomp

This award-winning comedy centers around the coming-of-age of a young schoolboy named Hendri. Hendri eventually needs to move to his grandfather’s retirement village, where he meets a motley crew of colorful characters…with interesting results.

Quote: Is jy lus om jonk te wees? Translation: “Do you feel like being young?”

A gentle, fun watch with a bit more to it than meets the eye.

6- Vir Altyd

When she gets dumped in front of the altar, Nina finds herself fighting against the feeling that her last chance for happiness is gone. Despite the groom’s betrayal, she decides to go on a honeymoon anyway, and takes a long-lost childhood friend with her.

The film is beautifully shot in gorgeous locations—pure escapist fun.

Quote: Ek kannie wag om jou vrou te wees nie. Translation: “I can’t wait to be your wife.”

A tad formulaic, Vir Altyd nevertheless made millions at the box office in South Africa.

3. Afrikaans Drama Movies

While it’s true that South Africans love a good comedy, they’re also able to get very serious in their cinema. Here are some of the best tearjerkers with grit.

1- Raaiselkind

Called a “powerful drama” by reviewers, Raaiselkind is based on a book about the life of Ingrid, the mother of an autistic boy who’s found dead in a bathtub at home. She’s being investigated for his murder. The movie tells her difficult, heartbreaking story.

Getting eight stars on IMDb, this drama is worth the watch, even if it isn’t easy viewing.

Quote: ‘n Spieel het gebreek tussen my en hom. Translation: “A mirror broke between me and him.”

The movie deals with the history of a bright, eleven-year-old Khoi girl named Krotoa from the Goringhaicona tribe in the Cape, South Africa. She gets taken away from her close-knit family to serve her uncle’s trading partner, Jan Van Riebeeck. Despite many hardships, she grows up to become a visionary, strong woman and a Dutch interpreter for Van Riebeeck. The man later became the first Governor of what was formerly the Cape Colony.

While the film won numerous international cinema awards, critics and the public bashed it for being historically incorrect, and racially biased. Beautifully shot, it’s nevertheless worth the watch.

The Top Afrikaans Movies To Watch On Netflix and Amazon Prime in 2024

Watching movies and TV shows in the language you’re learning is a great way to improve your fluency and understanding of the language. You can get a better sense of the culture and the way people speak, whilst having fun. You’ll pick up Afrikaans slang, too, which will make you sound more like a native speaker.

Although South Africa has a budding film industry, with many movies being made to Hollywood standards, those movies aren’t readily available to stream outside of the country. Additionally, most aren’t even in Afrikaans. Thus, finding Afrikaans-language movies can be difficult.

Sadly, after searching long and hard, we found that there are hardly any Afrikaans movies on Netflix . They did have a larger selection at one point, but many of those movies have since been removed from the platform.

The good news is, Amazon Prime does have lots of popular Afrikaans movies, available to rent or buy. We’ve included them in this list in order to give you more viewing options.

The Top Afrikaans-language Movies on Netflix

These are the only movies in Afrikaans that we could find on Netflix.

Hole in the Wall

“Hole in the Wall” (“Gat in Die Muur” in the original language), is an independent drama movie about a man who, after being diagnosed with colon cancer, sets off on a road trip across South Africa, his son in tow.

There’s lots of shots of the beautiful South African landscape, the chance to pick up not just Afrikaans but isiXhosa (one of the native languages in the country).

“Liefling” is a musical love story that follows the life of Liefling Marais, a girl who loves adventure. Liefling lives on a farm with her family and friends, and the story follows their lives during the December holidays. A rich girl named Melanie von Staden sets her sights on Jan Ferreira, who is in love with Liefling, and the story follows their complicated love triangle.

“Amandla” is a movie set in South Africa that tells the story of two brothers who fall on opposite sides of the law. The movie is set in the late 1990s and early 2000s, during a time of great political and social turmoil. The movie explores the relationship between the brothers and their struggle to find their place in a society that is constantly changing.

The Top 10 Afrikaans-language Movies on Amazon Prime

Amazon’s selection, as you’ll see, is far larger. While the majority of the movies on the list are Afrikaans-only with English subtitles, one or two of them aren’t exclusively in Afrikaans – they use a mixture of languages, including Xhosa, English and Setswana, which reflect the diverse range of languages in South Africa.

They’re all available to stream on Amazon, though not all of them are included in the free list.

1. Meerkat Moonship

“Meerkat Moonship” follows the story of a young girl, Gideonette de La Rey, who learns about her family curse after her father dies. She is sent to live with her grandparents on a farm, where she makes a new friend who helps her overcome her fear. The movie is set in South Africa and is a coming-of-age story about friendship, courage, and overcoming adversity.

2. Griekwastad

Griekwastad

“Griekwastad” follows the story of the Steenkamp family, who were murdered in their home in 2012. Don, the 15-year-old son, walks into the police station covered in blood and tells them that his family has been killed. However, the evidence doesn’t add up and it’s unclear what really happened that night.

The movie is a gripping story that will leave you guessing until the very end.

3. Flatland

“Flatland” follows the story of three women – Beauty, Natalie, and Poppie – as they attempt to solve a murder case. While Beauty is trying to reconnect with her lost love, Billy, Natalie is on the run from the law, and Poppie is pregnant. They all end up discovering more about themselves and their relationships with each other as they go on this journey.

4. Four Corners

Four Corners

“Four Corners” is a crime thriller that follows several people as they cope with issues caused by their troubled histories and the uncertainty of their present situations. It’s set in Cape Town, South Africa, a city overrun by violence and lawlessness.

The characters include a man who has just been released from prison, a young boy caught between two worlds, and a doctor who is trying to find her place in the world. It’s an explosive and thought-provoking film that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

5. Number 37

“Number 37” is a thriller about a paraplegic who, after borrowing binoculars from his girlfriend, witnesses a mob killing. He tries to blackmail the killer for money, but soon finds himself in danger as a loan shark and the gangster both want him dead. The movie is suspenseful and thrilling, with plenty of action and plot twists.

6. Faan’s Train

Faans Train

“Faan’s Train” is a movie about a woman who manipulates a simple-minded man into stealing from his family. She does this by convincing him that she is interested in him, when really she just wants to get her hands on his family’s valuables. The movie is set in a small town in South Africa and explores the relationships between people of different cultures.

“Krotoa” is a movie about a young girl who is torn between two cultures. She is removed from her Khoi tribe to serve Jan van Riebeeck, and grows up to become an influential interpreter for him. However, she is rejected by her own people when she becomes too assimiliated into the Dutch culture. The Dutch also end up turning on her when she tries to fit in between the two cultures.

8. The Recce

In “Recce”, a young South African soldier is abandoned by his superiors and must make his way home through enemy territory. He faces many challenges along the way, including treacherous terrain and dangerous enemies. This is an intense and exciting movie with great acting and a compelling story.

“Triomf” is a movie about a white family in South Africa who are struggling to survive after the fall of apartheid. They are fearful of the new government and the changes that are happening in the country, so they decide to leave for the north.

10. Kanarie

“Kanarie” is about Johan Niemand, a man drafted into the South African Army during apartheid. Johan’s love of Boy George and Depeche Mode gets him placed in the army choir, the ‘Kanaries.’ Kanarie is a musical comedy about the struggle to find one’s voice.

Jakhalsdans , a new South African film, has become an almost instant box office hit, setting new standards for the Afrikaans-language movies.

The feature film, which opened in South African cinemas on 23 April, earned R600 000 (US$80 123) in its opening weekend, making it the most popular Afrikaans motion picture since the release of Lipstiek Dipstiek in November 1994.

“We are thrilled to see that South Africans are enjoying our film,” producer Anton Ernst said in a statement. “Saturday’s box office was practically double what we took on Friday, which is the first positive sign of consumer uptake for a film.”

According to the newly established company Indigenous Film Distribution , Jakhalsdans made 7% more sales after its release than Bakgat – an Afrikaans teen comedy brought out in 2008.

It had 34% more attendances than the 1998 film Paljas ; 74% more than the 2007 hit comedy Poena is Koning ; and 59% more than Die Storie van Klara Viljee , a drama released in 1988.

Jakhalsdans is the 18th full-length Afrikaans feature film to make it to the big screen in South Africa between 1980 and 2010, said Indigenous Film Distribution.

During its weekend debut Jakhalsdans was the best-performing title at 17 of the 35 cinemas to screen it, including the notable NuMetro North Park, Ster Kinekor Cape Gate, Ster Kinekor Brooklyn Nouveau and Ster Kinekor Kolonnade.

It’s currently up against international hits such as Bounty Hunter , a romantic comedy starring Jennifer Aniston, and Tooth Fairy , also a comedy, featuring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Ashley Judd.

“The film is performing countrywide from Klerksdorp, to Worcester … and Johannesburg, which is very encouraging,” said Helen Kuun, CEO of Indigenous Film Distribution.

“This level of opening weekend takings makes it the best performing local feature film released this year,” she said.

Filmed in scenic Loxton

Jakhalsdans was shot and set in Loxton, a tranquil town in the Northern Cape province’s Karoo region. It’s a story about teacher Mara Malan, played by Elizma Theron, who’s hell-bent on saving the local school, which her five-year-old daughter attends. Through various means Malan manages to raise R500 000 ($66 749).

“I’ve always had a great love for the remote, brooding landscapes of the Karoo,” said film director Darrel Roodt.

Theron, a popular local singer, joins fellow muso Theuns Jordaan in a lead role, while top South African model Christina Storm and accomplished actor Neil Sandilands complement the stellar line-up.

Roodt is no stranger to success either: his previous title, Yesterday , was nominated for a 2005 Academy Award in the best foreign language film category. It starred Leleti Khumalo of the 1992 hit film Sarafina!

” [ Jakhalsdans ] provided a wonderful opportunity for me to work with stars like Theuns Jordaan and Elizma Theron, and to create a love story that is quintessentially South African,” he said.

“It’s something completely different from the comedies which have dominated the Afrikaans language local film industry over the past few years and it’s encouraging to see that audiences are responding to it.”

Movie reviews can be written by two groups of reviewers: professional critics and ordinary consumers. Therefore, the text of the review will differ. In the first case, when the reviewer is a professional critic, he will describe the movie instead of evaluating it. While consumer critics mostly write from a personal perspective. 

What is the main purpose of a film review?

The main purpose of a film review is to inform readers about the film (what can expect from it) and to help them determine if they want to watch the movie. 

Functions of the Movie Review

The film review performs several functions at once: it informs, analyzes, persuades, and entertains. If you can include all of these points in your review, then you will have an excellent result in the end. 

How to Write a Film Review: Preparation for Writing

Writing a review is, of course, a creative process, but you should not forget about the analytical approach to creating a convincing and high-quality text. You must take the work responsibly, which we will do now.

To write a professional film review, you first need to complete the following preparation steps:

• Of course, the first step is to find a film, if it has not been previously chosen by the manager/client/boss. There will be more chances to write a good review if the film was liked by both – film critics and you personally.
• Watch the movie at least 2-3 times. After the first viewing, you will get a general impression of the picture, and try to fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the film. Pay attention to the details the next time you watch it: the sound, the actor’s play, the editing, the plot. 
• If you have difficulty understanding the events covered in the film (for example, historical), be sure to find additional information and research the topic.
• If after two viewings you still do not have a final assessment of the film in the form of a brief thesis, watch the film again. You can look at other works of the director who worked on this film, this will help you determine his characteristic style. Also, as an option, you can look at the game of actors in other films (for comparison).
• When watching a movie, take notes: key scenes, interesting plot twists, inconsistencies, details, and quotes. Then, based on them, you can build a review text, and a good quote can become an excellent epigraph.
• Find information about the filming: location, duration, season, details about the filming process, difficulties the production team faced, casting, etc. Such information will make the review more attractive to readers.
• If the film is nominated for awards and prizes, please include this information in your film review. For a potential viewer, such an assessment of the film will be a weighty argument in the direction of -> compulsory viewing.

10 Questions You Need to Answer Before You Start Writing a Movie Review

• Does the film split into multiple parts? A sequel, prequel, or one of the movie series? 
• What is the film genre (action, comedy, historical, drama, fantasy, Western, political, thriller, gangster, horror, tragicomedy, romance, sports, mystery, science fiction)? Is the movie based on real or fictional events?
• Did the screenplay writer create an exciting plot?
• Is the rhythm of the film slow and quiet, heavy and static, or chaotic and frantic?
• What is the film’s rating according to the MPAA? ( G – General Audiences. All ages admitted. PG – Parental Guidance Suggested. PG-13 – Parents Strongly Cautioned. R – Restricted. Under 17 requires an accompanying parent or adult guardian. NC-17 – Adults Only.) 
• Are there any films with a similar/same theme? Sometimes it is worth mentioning some of them in a review, as a comparison.
• How can you characterize the work of a cinematographer? How accurately are the most expressive compositional, lighting solutions, as well as camera angles, selected and embodied?
• Is the film entertaining or covers a serious themes?
• Was the casting successful? Did all the actors cope with their roles?
• Is the atmosphere of the film tense, mysterious, sinister, relaxed, or romantic?

The answers to all of the above questions will help you understand how to write a film review, and above all, create a draft version of your future review. But, of course, this is not enough for the final result.

How to Write and Structure a Film Review: Step by Step

Writing a film review is a long and complicated process. Therefore, it is better to break it down into stages and move step by step. This will help you not to get lost and not get confused in the details.

• The catchy introduction.

The introductory part of the review should contain important information about the film: title, director, release date, and genre. 

You can mention nominations and awards, as well as indicate the box office (if the numbers are impressive) and the cast. 

In addition to “technical” aspects and a simple presentation of the plot, it is necessary to express your impression of the film in the form of a thesis, for example, to tell:

• about the connection of the film’s central idea with current events and social problems;
• about the similarity of the film’s plot with a personal life situation, personal experience, and feelings;
• about the connection of technical elements (lighting, sound, editing) with the theme of the film.

2. Pass the verdict.

Do not torment the reader and express your opinion about the film in the first paragraphs of the review.

You should not leave all the most interesting “for later”. If you decide to give a final assessment of the film at the end of the review, what are the chances that the reader will read to this end?

3. Write a summary of the plot.

Choose 4-5 main events.

Avoid the film’s ending and spoilers. Keep the intrigue. If you want to spoil and share an unusual story development, warn the reader about this.

4. Bring the feelings.

In addition to presenting the plot of the film, you should add emotions to the text of the review and show what you felt while watching it.

5. Define the main purpose of the movie. 

Perhaps the film’s purpose is hidden in its plot. Or maybe the film does not pretend to solve global problems at all. Perhaps the film is entertaining, and this is its advantage – it is relaxed and simple.

Sometimes the main idea of a serious and deep film can be found in an interview with a film crew, a screenwriter, or a director.

6. Add some details of the filmmaking process. 

It is important to know the measure and not to overdo it with the terminology. Here’s what you can write about:

• Cinematography: visual mood, lighting elements, shot sizes and widths, camera angles, etc. 
• Sound. The main goal is to create the necessary atmosphere in the film. Sound in movies includes music, dialogue, sound effects, ambient noise, background noise, and soundtracks. 
• Editing is the creation of a finished motion picture from many shot scenes. A film editor must creatively work with the layers of images, story, dialogue, music, pacing, as well as the actors’ performances to effectively “re-imagine” and even rewrite the film to craft a cohesive whole.
• Mise-en-scène (from French – placement on the stage) is the mutual arrangement of the actors and their environment on the set, natural or pavilion. Mise-en-scene includes landscapes, visual effects, the psychological state of the characters, etc.

7. The deep meaning.

You may be able to spot specific symbolic items, repetitive moments, or key phrases that give depth to the film.

8. Give examples.

It is not enough to say “ an excellent game of actors ”. Explain what exactly caught your attention (appearance, facial expressions, costumes, or movements of the actor). 

9. A convincing conclusion.

Write about the moments in the film that made the biggest impression on you. Share a recommendation. To whom and why do you advise to watch this movie?

10. Reread the review text several times .

Edit, and correct mistakes that can spoil the impression even from a professionally written film review.

Examples of Film Reviews

To consolidate the received information, let’s move from theory to practice. Below are two examples of film reviews.

Apocalypse Now

Francis Ford Coppola’s film “Apocalypse Now” was inspired by Heart of Darkness, a novel by Joseph Conrad about a European named Kurtz who penetrated to the farthest reaches of the Congo and established himself like a god. A boat sets out to find him, and on the journey the narrator gradually loses confidence in orderly civilization; he is oppressed by the great weight of the jungle all around him, a pitiless Darwinian testing ground in which each living thing tries every day not to be eaten.

What is found at the end of the journey is not Kurtz so much as what Kurtz found: that all of our days and ways are a fragile structure perched uneasily atop the hungry jaws of nature that will thoughtlessly devour us. A happy life is a daily reprieve from this knowledge.

A week ago I was in Calcutta, where I saw mile upon square mile of squatter camps in which hundreds of thousands live generation after generation in leaky huts of plastic, cardboard and scrap metal, in poverty so absolute it is impossible to see any hope of escape. I do not mean to equate the misery of those hopeless people with a movie; that would be indecent. But I was deeply shaken by what I saw, and realized how precious and precarious is a happy life. And in such a mood I watched “Apocalypse Now” and came to the scene where Col. Kurtz (Marlon Brando) tells Capt. Willard (Martin Sheen) about “the horror.”

Kurtz is a decorated hero, one of the best soldiers in the Army, who has created a jungle sanctuary upriver inside enemy territory, and rules Montagnard tribesmen as his private army. He tells Willard about a day when his Special Forces men inoculated the children of a village against polio: “This old man came running after us and he was crying, he couldn’t see. We went back there, and they had come and hacked off every inoculated arm. There they were in a pile, a pile of little arms. . . .”

What Kurtz learned is that the Viet Cong were willing to go to greater lengths to win: “Then I realized they were stronger than we. They have the strength, the strength to do that. If I had 10 divisions of those men, then our troubles here would be over very quickly. You have to have men who are moral and at the same time who are able to utilize their primordial instincts to kill without feeling, without passion, without judgment.” This is the “horror” that Kurtz has found, and it threatens to envelop Willard, too.

The whole movie is a journey toward Willard’s understanding of how Kurtz, one of the Army’s best soldiers, penetrated the reality of war to such a depth that he could not look any longer without madness and despair.

The film has one of the most haunting endings in cinema, a poetic evocation of what Kurtz has discovered, and what we hope not to discover for ourselves. The river journey creates enormous anticipation about Kurtz, and Brando fulfills it. When the film was released in 1979, his casting was criticized and his enormous paycheck of $1 million was much discussed, but it’s clear he was the correct choice, not only because of his stature as an icon, but because of his voice, which enters the film from darkness or half-light, repeating the words of T.S. Eliot’s despairing “The Hollow Men.” That voice sets the final tone of the film.

Diana biopic Spencer wobbles between the bold and the bad

You may feel that you’ve had enough of Princess Diana’s story on the big and small screens, what with Naomi Watts taking the role in Oliver Hirschbiegel’s awful Diana in 2013, and then Emma Corrin playing her in the most recent season of The Crown, with the mantel set to be passed in Elizabeth Debicki in the next run. But, to give it its due, Pablo Larraín’s Spencer marks the only time the People’s Princess has been shown delivering a lecture on Anne Boleyn to an old coat that she has just stolen off a scarecrow, and then having a chat with the ghost of Boleyn herself shortly afterwards. The Chilean director doesn’t go in for conventional biopics, as anyone who has seen Jackie (starring Natalie Portman) or Neruda will know. And here again he has gone for a surreal portrait of his iconic subject. The snag is that his experimental art house spirit keeps bumping up against the naffness and the familiarity of British films set in stately homes, so his psychodrama ends up being both ground-breaking and rib-tickling.

It’s set over three days in 1991, from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day, at Sandringham House in Norfolk. The rest of the Royal Family has arrived for their holiday in a fleet of chauffeur-driven cars, but Diana (Kristen Stewart) rocks up on her own in a Porsche convertible, having taken a detour to visit the aforementioned scarecrow: her dilapidated childhood home, from the days when she was Lady Diana Spencer, is a field or two away from Sandringham. Her late arrival concerns the sympathetic head chef (Sean Harris) and bothers the Scottish army veteran (Timothy Spall) who has the job of ensuring that everything goes the way the Queen wants it to. Her Majesty’s insufferable Christmas traditions include weighing all the guests when they arrive and when they leave to ensure that they’ve been sufficiently gluttonous. But Diana is in no mood for festive japes. Her Christmas present from Charles (Jack Farthing) – a necklace with pearls the size of golf balls – is identical to the one he has given his mistress. And the whisper in the servants’ quarters is that the Princess is “cracking up”. The filmmakers apparently agree.

Steering away from the same territory as The Crown, Larraín and Knight don’t fill the film with awkward meals and heated arguments (although there are one of each of those). Prince Charles does some grumbling, but the Queen has hardly any lines and Prince Philip has none: they are closer to menacing waxworks than people. For most of the time, Diana is either talking to her young sons, her trusted personal dresser (Sally Hawkins) or to herself. It’s interesting, this lack of dramatic conflict and discernible plot, but it can leave the film seeming as listless and purposeless as Larraín’s Diana herself. Her favourite occupation is to wander around the estate until she finds something that has an ominous symbolic connection to her, and then make an unconvincing speech about it. Ah, pheasants! So beautiful, yet bred to be killed!

Stewart is such inspired casting that she makes all this eccentric nonsense watchable. She’s been practising Diana’s signature moves for years – dipped head, hunched shoulders – and she certainly knows what it’s like to put up with intrusive tabloid photographers. She also looks suitably fabulous in the many outfits that Diana is required to wear over the long weekend. And unlike Watts’s performance in 2013, hers doesn’t seem distractingly like an impersonation. Mind you, she delivers all her lines in little bursts of hissing whispers, so if you don’t see it with English subtitles, as its first audiences did at the Venice Film Festival, you might not understand more than half of what she says.

The effect is a bit odd, but there are lots of odd things in the film, not least the tone and the pacing, which lurch around like someone who’s had too much after-dinner port. Between Jonny Greenwood’s squalling jazz soundtrack, the hallucinations, and the blush-making sexual confessions, Spencer is a folly that wobbles between the bold and the bad, the disturbingly gothic and the just plain silly. In some scenes, it’s heart-rending in its depiction of Diana’s self-harm and bulimia. In others, it’s almost as risible as the Diana biopic from 2013, and that’s saying something. I didn’t know any more about Diana afterwards than I did beforehand, but I can’t say I didn’t enjoy it. This is a film that echoes The Shining at the start and 2001: A Space Odyssey at the end. The Crown Christmas Special it ain’t.

Fiela se Kind (2019)

Zenobia Kloppers takes over from Shaleen Surtie-Richards as tender-hearted coloured mom Fiela Komoetie, who finds a lost white boy in the Knysna forest – Benjamin Komoetie, played by Luca Bornman. But after raising him for nine years as her own, Benjamin is ripped from Fiela’s arms and taken “home to his own kind”. But she isn’t giving up.

Kanarie (2018) | First on Showmax

The apartheid military was a very rough and difficult place for any young man, thrown in as they were into the deep end of the pool of toxic masculinity. The bigger your muscles, the better. The bushier your beard, great. The meaner you were to anyone less masculine than you, spectacular. And that’s a problem for Johan Niemand, a delicate young man who’d prefer to dress in drag as his hero, 80s pop icon Boy George than shoot the enemy across the border.

Kanarie was nominated for a 2020 GLAAD Award in the category Outstanding Film: Limited Release. The award recognises work that is a fair and inclusive representation of LGBTQI characters and issues.

Droom dag (2016)

Tanya is desperate to find the man she will settle down with but always seems to end up with Mr Wrong. She takes a break from dating – only to meet the man of her dreams. But that’s just the start of her problems.

Die Stropers (2019) | First on Showmax

This critically acclaimed English-subtitled movie was released internationally with the title The Harvesters. It’s a coming of age tale about a youngster who’s forced to confront his personal choices when his family takes in a troubled young boy on their farm. Meerkat Maantuig (2017)

Most children are afraid of monsters, the scary ones hiding in their closet or under their bed. But Gideonette De La Rey (Anchen du Plessis) has a different fear in  Meerkat Maantuig : she fears death. Or rather falling victim to the De La Rey Curse, where everyone named Gideon dies at an early age.

After her father’s death, she’s sent to live with her grandparents. That’s where Gideonette meets the adorable deaf boy Bhubesi (Themba Ntuli), who is training to become an astronaut and fly into space with his Meerkat Maantuig (moon ship). But there’s more to this boy than Gideonette initially realises.

This sweet film was nominated for and won a slew of awards.

Vaselinetjie (2017)

A white girl is raised by her loving brown grandparents in a remote rural village. When the welfare services find out that she is not their biological grandchild, they send her to an orphanage in Johannesburg. This movie deals with the search for identity in South Africa’s fractured society.

Balbesit (2014)

Saartjie Botha’s acclaimed play uses rugby as a metaphor for exploring issues of masculinity. This film version, like the original play, was directed by Jaco Brouwer.

Die Seemeeu (2018)

Anton Chekhov’s classic play The Seagull is adapted and placed in 1990s South Africa. The characters grapple with inner fears, longings, doubts, regrets, recriminations and miseries of their own making.

‘The Crow’ Review: Resurrected and It Feels So Bad

Hoping to skate by off moody vibes, this revamp of “The Crow” comic book series seems derived from a flattened, Hot Topic image of the hero.

In the long and winding road it took to finally get to “The Crow” — with some 15 years of recasts, rewrites, and director switches — the one constant that has remained is that this version would not be a remake of the 1994 film of the same name. It would, the mantra went, instead be a reimagining of the original comic book series by James O’Barr about a man, resurrected from the dead, enacting vengeance on the small-time gangsters who killed him and his fiancée.

It’s a sensible distinction to make for any movie revamp, but here is a particularly important and likely futile disclaimer to evade existing in the shadow not only of a cult classic, but also of a tragic and storied legacy — the accidental on-set death of its star, Brandon Lee — that shrouded and ultimately fueled the original film’s beloved status. “The Crow” of 2024 was never meant to be, couldn’t ever be, a version of that movie, a grittily stylized, rough-edged gothic melodrama whose pain and grief was so deeply absorbed by fans because those very things bled beyond the frame.

That, of course, is fine and all. But ultimately what this version, directed by Rupert Sanders, is spiritually derived from is neither the film nor the comic, but rather the flattened popular image that the film produced — a Hot Topic -style version of alternative consciousness.

“Do you think angsty teens would build shrines to us?” Shelly (FKA twigs) asks Eric (Bill Skarsgard) about their love story, the film’s central romance, whose edgy sensitivity is packaged with as much real feeling as a perfume ad starring Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox. You might think of Shelly’s line as a kind of wink at how Lee’s image became a beacon for brooding cynicism for an entire generation.

But the real punchline is that the film itself is the embodiment of that kind of hollow emo teen worship, throwing vague echoes of “Joker,” “John Wick” and “Constantine” into a laundry machine and hoping faded shades of black eyeliner remain.
