Similar to Emmons, he also discusses turning sorrow and disaster into something to be grateful for, in a sense. Being grateful is a commitment that we must choose to enhance our lives. It’s all about how you measure your success.

“Gratitude promotes optimism and helps us to develop a more positive outlook. It lets us pause for a moment to reflect on something we have in our life right now instead of always striving for more … the next goal, the new dress, the new toy, the new car, or the house renovation …Gratitude is simply cultivating a genuine appreciation for what we already have.”

From a more scientific perspective, Jepsen discusses the health benefits of gratitude, both psychological and physical. Gratitude makes us more optimistic and helps us reflect on what we have rather than constantly wanting more. She also encourages readers to share their appreciation with others, even through something as simple as a smile. 

“Be honest: When was the last time you were grateful for the spots on a trout? More seriously, think of the small, useless things you experience — the smell of fall in the air, the fragment of a song that reminds you of when you were a kid. Give thanks.”

This opinion piece by Arthur C is similar to the other works on this list. Brooks encourages readers to choose gratitude. He says that acting grateful can help you feel grateful and that being grateful can uplift the mood of those around us. Gratitude offers benefits for the individual and the collective. My coonhound Oliver is a good dog. When we went camping last month, he found himself a small, dirty rag to sleep on. He scratched at it from every direction, spinning round and round until the bed was just right, and then plopped down with a satisfied groan. This was not a groan of discontent, but rather an expression of gratitude. Oliver doesn’t care that his bed is a dirty old rage; he is simply being grateful for a master who feeds him and takes him camping.

So if a dog can be happy with so little, why are we so unappreciative? One little thing can send us flying over the edge.

Maybe it’s because we get up every morning only because we have to, grumble our way through the day, and lastly go to bed knowing that the same scenario waits for tomorrow. Adam and Eve found themselves in a similar situation in the Garden of Eden. They had so much to be grateful for, but chose to rebel instead. All their needs were covered by God, yet they chose to sample the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, opening the gates of sin, and condemning man to a life of ingratitude. Indeed, the Bible tells us that as Adam was being evicted, the first words out of his mouth were, Lord, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me the fruit, and I ate it.'[1] Rather than giving thanks for the Garden, Adam chose to blame God for getting kicked out. It’s not that getting up in the morning is so difficult. It’s getting up knowing that we’re not going to receive what we think we are entitled to from other people.

They say that the only guarantee in life is death and taxes, yet we expect much more than that from the people we deal with. We expect them to guarantee our happiness. It seems that the bigger our sense of entitlement, the more ingratitude we exhibit. We experience life through our demands, and struggle to balance our giving with other’s taking. Then, when our perception of giving is dwarfed by their taking, we become downright ungracious and unappreciative of their efforts. We can’t control what others do, but we can control our reaction to it. If we don’t control our reactions, the feelings of entitlement often lead to more disappointment and dissatisfaction. The words from the song, Love is Blue, “Green, green my jealous heart”[2] describe one of the chief components of ingratitude. Jealousy. It’s been around for a long time. Shakespeare described jealousy and ingratitude as a green-eyed monster in the tragic play, Othello. [3] The bible says in James 3:16 “For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.”[4] Envious people are everywhere, going through life angry over the seemingly unearned blessings which are given to others.

They want the same advantages and resent people for what they have. It’s impossible to be grateful when you covet your neighbor’s belongings. By comparing what we don’t have to what others possess, we reduce our ability to appreciate the blessings in our own lives. Many people believe that money brings happiness. This is because we have all been indoctrinated to be good consumers and all success is judged on a scale of financed wealth. However, the Bible tells us that “The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.”[6] It also states in Matthew 6:19, ““Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. “[5] Gratitude provides perspective in life, and those who lack appreciation miss the big picture. Life is not all about me. No one wants to associate with disagreeable people and such people miss out on the connectivity that we all take for granted.

It’s distressing to think of all the good times that have been forfeited because of ingratitude. No one really thinks of themselves, or likes to think of themselves, as an ingrate, but according to a study conducted by the Royal Society Open Science, Americans were found to show gratitude “less than 14.5 percent of the time”. [5] This means that approximately 85.5 percent of the time, Americans did not express gratitude and they showed a lack of appreciation 6 times more often than were grateful. It’s a big problem because ingratitude affects how we perceive our quality of life. My dad challenged us to compare our positive statements against our negative statements. He said that a good ratio would be 10 to 1. I took him up on his challenge and found my ratio to be exactly 10 to 1…in the wrong direction! Nowadays, my goal is to bring the ratio to parity, or roughly one nice statement for every critical statement. Oh yeah, just thinking something nice doesn’t count; you actually have to do it. With all the blessings that we enjoy as Americans, you would think it might be tough to see EVERYTHING in a negative light.

I mean, it takes work to count all the problems and dilemmas surrounding every situation and then to spew out vitriolic words on our friends and family. Actually it’s not–if you practice, and I’ve had 13 years to perfect this rather unworthy skill. On the other hand, it’s easy to see things in a positive light, even when problems arise. My friend, Julie, is just like this. Even when something goes wrong, she looks for the silver lining. And if she can’t find one, she simply states that something good will eventually come out of whatever she’s going through and it’s all part of God’s master plan. According to R.L Adams, “Gratitude can improve your life by strengthening your faith. There’s a deep appreciation for things that arise when people are grateful.” In fact, it becomes instilled into their very being. Therefore, it strengthens their faith and belief in all things. “For me, it’s my belief in God and the realization truly grateful for everything in my life, including my problems.” [6] Gratitude can transform your faith by instilling the belief that you’re not alone; whatever it is that you’re going through will pass, and you’ll emerge victorious.

You’ll accomplish your goals, overcome your obstacles, and become a better person, one who’s more compassionate to the troubles of others. As a result of all of this, you will be able to search for opportunities because you realize that what you have truly is enough, and that the focus must be caring for the spiritual and physical needs of others. That’s when true spiritual enlightenment begins. Gratitude is important because it is giving ourselves permission to finally be happy. Today I am grateful for food, shelter, clothing, the list could continue forever. Unfortunately, for many, these luxuries don’t exist. But anyone’s list can be simpler than that. I’m also grateful that I can smile, that I can walk, or even that there is fresh air to breathe. Many times we forget about these things until they are lost. Just like how my dog Oliver is extremely grateful for that small dirty rag, I can be grateful for the small things in my life. Oliver is not focusing on how he doesn’t have a five-star hotel bed to sleep on, but basks in the blissful ignorance of knowing that his needs are covered.

He knows how lucky and fortunate he is to have a place to sleep at all. In the same way, count your blessings instead of your misfortunes. You will never run out of either, but I choose happiness. Gratitude can truly change and transform your life. But it doesn’t happen overnight. Nothing ever does. Even when things are going terribly, I know that I can be grateful for a God who cares. Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”[7] We always have things to be grateful for, if we trust in the Lord. ] There is no need to force our adversary to do anything when God can shoulder the burden for us. Current Housing and Urban Secretary Ben Carson has said, ‘Just do our best and let God do the rest.'[9] When we truly put our troubles in God’s hand, we can afford rest. Being grateful and content is not about what you have, it’s about who you are inside. Ungratefulness doesn’t happen by accident but we are part of why it happens. The Bible states in Philippians 4:4 “Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.”

Whether you know it, you always have things to be grateful for. Did you see the sunrise this morning? It was beautiful. Whether you fell like it or not, still rejoice in the Lord. If you don’t feel like being grateful, then that’s even better because it’s sacrifice. It can something as simple as being grateful that you didn’t honk at that person who took the last space in the mall parking lot. We can be grateful because we have a God who promises to protect us all the time. When we are grateful, our light shines through for others to see the work that Jesus does in our lives.

As I mentioned in the intro, there are plenty of reasons to be thankful today.

Even when luck doesn’t seem to be on your side, it’s always good to try to consider some of the things that are still kind to you.

But why exactly should you be thankful? How exactly does a little gratitude improve your life? There have been multiple fascinating studies that prove multiple links between thankfulness and positive factors in life, but I want to highlight two of them here.

One of the most detailed studies on thankfulness was conducted in 2003 by Robert Emmons and Michael McCullough . They monitored the happiness of a group of people after having asked the following question:

“There are many things in our lives, both large and small, that we might be grateful about. Think back over the past week and write down on the lines below up to five things in your life that you are grateful or thankful for.”

The study showed that people were approximately 10% happier when encouraged to think of things they’re grateful for.

10 percent may sound inconsequential, but if you practice gratitude every day, these small improvements will compound and may improve your mental health in a significant way.

In addition, another study reviewed the influence of gratitude on the quality of sleep.

This study tested whether individual differences in gratitude are related to sleep quality. Gratitude predicted greater subjective sleep quality and sleep duration, and less sleep latency and daytime dysfunction. These results were found after studying 400 people of all ages.

Long story short, thinking about things to be thankful for and grateful for before going to bed is linked to a better quality of sleep. This is also why it’s good to maintain a gratitude journal right before going to sleep!

We live in a crazy world and it’s far too easy to only see the negative around us. I am so grateful every time I see someone do a good deed for someone else, even a small gesture can have a huge impact. The truth is, I love spending time with my family, mainly my parents, brother, and sister. I’m thankful for the time my brother, sister and I ran a marathon together. I feel lucky to have her in my life and wouldn’t want to imagine what it’d be like if it was any different.

Each morning, I am treated with a visit from these precious little birds, first flying back and forth, then hovering in front of the glass as if they are saying good morning before they sit to drink their nectar. I love seeing their tiny little hummingbird shape and color so close up, reminding me to be aware of nature, which is so comforting and peaceful.

If you still have your hearing, then you should be grateful for the beauty of sound. The fact that multiple sound waves combined form music that can carry emotion, tension, and excitement is something that we often take for granted.

Music has the power to move. I personally experience this every once in a while, when a song sucks me in and takes me on a journey. This journey always ends up putting a smile on my face, and sometimes even brings me to tears. Tears of happiness, that is.

The fact that we’re able to hear and appreciate sounds and music is definitely something to be thankful for.

I am grateful for all the connections I am able to make when I let my guard down and become vulnerable. Being able to use my vulnerability as a superpower to share my story with others provides healing in the heart of others. It gives them strength and comfort knowing they are not alone. One small thing I’m super grateful for is seeing the flowers on the very first strawberry plant I ever planted. I’m really grateful for technology. Cell phones that keep me connected to my family, kids, colleagues, and students during the pandemic. Whenever I buy a new 5-pack of socks, I’m always surprised by how nice it feels to put them on for the first time. The feeling of smoothness that comes with putting on a pair of new socks is something I am truly grateful for.

We focus so much on the negative that the positive loses its place in our hearts.

Here is a list of little and big things we all should be grateful for, for gratitude itself is a virtue:

1. Your Life

No matter how you think it is, it is a gift. So many individuals don’t get a chance to make it as far as you did.

Disease, poverty, famines, and droughts claim thousands of lives each year, but you were lucky. You got to live, survive, exist and be able to dream. Be grateful for your life.

2. Your Situation

Wherever you are, if you’re reading this you are already in a better situation than the hundreds of millions of individuals who are struggling to have two square meals a day. Be grateful for your situation.

3. Your Friends

They’re the family you picked. Think of the crazy inside jokes, the embarrassing memories, the late-night phone calls, and the fact that they’ve always got your back. Be grateful for that priceless relationship.

4. Your Parents

Your biggest fans and most honest critics. The only beings who could possibly love you more than you could ever love them. Not all parents are great, I agree, but they did choose to let you live and gave you life.

Be grateful to your parents for their support, encouragement, their strength, and undying love. Be grateful for the opportunity of life that they gave you.

5. Your Courage

You’ve lived so long, you’ve come so far. You made it despite heartbreaks and pain, though disappointment and failure. Yet here you are, alive, motivated, and rearing to go.

Remember to be grateful for whatever is giving you the will to drag yourself out of bed and face the world. Be it your motivation, your goals, your God, whatever, be grateful for the courage.

The fact that you didn’t break down that once. The time when you supported your friend in despair, that time you smiled for the family photo when all you wanted to do was to cry, but you didn’t.

Here's a list of 40 things to be grateful for today.

There are so many things around us and in our lives that we overlook, so many blessings that we forget to acknowledge. Gratitude is everywhere. We are all so blessed in little and big ways. All we are required to do is focus.

To find things to be grateful for in every moment, I recommend trying out a technique that I call ' Atomic Gratitude '.

In this technique, we pick up one small aspect of our lives, and it can be anything, for example; your bedroom, your partner, nature, your pet, your job, yourself, your friend, your kitchen, anything.

And, now you focus on this part of your life and see the little atomic parts of it that you can be thankful for.

Let's take the example of a bedroom that I also mention in my Attitude of Gratitude course and find the things that we can be grateful for in it.

Now, there might not be anything extraordinary in your bedroom that you see and sleep in every night. But, imagine if it wasn’t there, and think of each individual atom that makes it home for you.

Let's make a gratitude list with the things we can be thankful for in a bedroom:

  • Think of the walls that give you a space just for you.
  • Think of the windows that let soothing wind and sunlight in.
  • The curtains create soft light in the room, ensure privacy, and gently sway with the air.
  • The floor that you stand upon and how reliable it is.
  • The closet lets you keep your clothes and make more space in your room.
  • The lightbulb illuminates in the dark.
  • The buttons make it so easy to control the environment of the room.
  • The bed is always available for you to rest on.
  • The comfortable mattress supports your sleep and physical health.
  • The cool and relaxing feeling of clean bedsheets.
  • The support of pillows.
  • The bedside table that keeps all the things you want near.
  • The door that connects you to the rest of your house and also allows you to choose when you want to be with yourself only.
  • The sense of assurance that the lock on that door gives you.
  • The photographs on the walls relive golden memories.

There is such an incredible possibility in your bedroom alone. We just listed 15 things we can be grateful for in your bedroom alone and there's a lot more in it.

How often do you pause to appreciate what you have in life?

When I was young, I took things for granted . I believe many other kids did so, as well. After all, we were young and we didn’t know what life could be like on the other side.

One thing we took for granted was education. In my country, it’s compulsory for all kids to go to school, so it was a given. We never thought about how lucky we were to be educated.

We also took our teachers for granted. We never thought about how lucky we were to have teachers who cared for our growth so much, and poured their heart and soul into their lessons.

Then slowly as I grew up, I began to appreciate things around me more. As I saw more and more of the world out there, I realized all the things I’d been given are not rights, but privileges.

I realized that being literate is a not a right, but a gift. I realized there is a lot of war and violence in the world, and I’m lucky to live in a country where it’s safe and peaceful. I realized there are people out there who don’t have their five senses, and to have mine is a gift.

I realized the world is so beautiful, and we’re lucky to live in such an amazing world.

Sometimes it’s easy to feel bad because you’re going through a tough time in life. However, remember that no matter how bad your situation may seem, there are tens of thousands of things to be grateful for in life.

Below is a simple list of things that I’m grateful for in my life. Most of the items, if not all, will apply to you too. I’m sure as you read this list, you’ll think of many more things to be grateful for. Feel free to add on in the comments box below. I would love to read them.

Here are sixty things to be grateful for in our lives:

1. Your parents – for giving birth to you. Because if there is no them, there will not be you. 2. Your family – for being your closest kin in the world. 3. Your friends – for being your companions in life. 4. Sense of sight – for letting you see the colors of life. 5. Sense of hearing – for letting you hear trickle of rain, the voices of your loved ones, and the harmonious chords of music. 6. Sense of touch – for letting you feel the texture of your clothes, the breeze of the wind, the hands of your loved ones. 7. Sense of smell – for letting you smell scented candles, perfumes, and beautiful flowers in your garden. 8. Sense of taste – for letting you savor the sweetness of fruits, the saltiness of seawater, the sourness of pickles, the bitterness of bitter gourd, and the spiciness of chili. 9. Your speech – for giving you the outlet to express yourself. 10. Your heart – for pumping blood to all the parts of your body every second since you were born; for giving you the ability to feel. 11. Your lungs – for letting you breathe so you can live. 12. Your immune system – for fighting viruses that enter your body. For keeping you in the pink of your health so you can do the things you love. 13. Your hands – so you can type on your computer, flip the pages of books, and hold the hands of your loved ones. 14. Your legs – for letting you walk, run, swim, play the sports you love, and curl up in the comfort of your seat. 15. Your mind – for the ability to think, to store memories, and to create new solutions. 16. Your good health – for enabling you to do what you want to do and for what you’re about to do in the future. 17. Your school – for providing a environment conducive to learning and growing. 18. Your teachers – for their dedication and for passing down knowledge to you. 19. Tears – for helping you express your deepest emotions. 20. Disappointment – so you know the things that matter to you most. 21. Fears – so you know your opportunities for growth. 22. Pain – for you to become a stronger person. 23. Sadness – for you to appreciate the spectrum of human emotions. 24. Happiness – for you to soak in the beauty of life. 25. The Sun – for bringing in light and beauty to this world. 26. Sunset – for a beautiful sight to end the day. 27. Moon and Stars – for brightening up our night sky. 28. Sunrise – for a beautiful sight to start the morning. 29. Rain – for cooling you when it gets too warm and for making it comfy to sleep in on weekends. 30. Snow – for making winter even more beautiful. 31. Rainbows – for a beautiful sight to look forward to after rain. 32. Oxygen – for making life possible. 33. The earth – for creating the environment for life to begin. 34. Mother nature – for covering our world in beauty. 35. Animals – for adding to the diversity of life. 36. Internet – for connecting you and others despite the physical space between you. 37. Transport – for making it easier to commute from one place to another. 38. Mobile phones – for making it easy to stay in touch with others. 39. Computers – for making our lives more effective and efficient. 40. Technology – for making impossible things possible. 41. Movies – for providing a source of entertainment. 42. Books – for adding wisdom into your life. 43. Blogs – for connecting you with other like-minded people. 44. Shoes – for protecting your feet when you are out. 45. Time – for a system to organize yourself and keep track of activities. 46. Your job – for giving you a source of living and for being a medium where you can add value to the world. 47. Music – for lifting your spirits when you’re down and for filling your life with more love. 48. Your bed – for you to sleep comfortably in every night. 49. Your home – for a place you can call home. 50. Your soul mate – for being the one who understands everything you’re going through. 51. Your best friends – for being there for you whenever you need them. 52. Your enemies – for helping you uncover your blind spots so you can become a better person. 53. Kind strangers – for brightening up your days when you least expect it. 54. Your mistakes – for helping you to improve and become better. 55. Heartbreaks – for helping you mature and become a better person. 56. Laughter – for serenading your life with joy. 57. Love – for letting you feel what it means to truly be alive. 58. Life’s challenges – for helping you grow and become who you are. 59. Life – for giving you the chance to experience all that you’re experiencing, and will be experiencing in time to come.

It wasn’t so long ago that I’ve created my A to Z gratitude alphabet . As it didn’t feel difficult for me (besides maybe a couple of tricky letters), I figured that writing 100 things to be grateful for is a natural next step. Are you up for taking this challenge with me?

Before you say no, let me tell you, it’s not as hard as it sounds!

I’m going to list the 100 things I’m grateful for below so you can use them for reference and easily come up with plenty of your own blessings to count.

But for now, let’s start small, especially if you aren’t used to being deeply grateful yet!

What are 3 things you are grateful for today?

Each day is different. Even if you work the same routine job and your day seems pretty much the same, there are actually thousands of little things that are different every time. Pay attention and you’ll start noticing more of those!

Maybe there was a fun song on your morning radio that set your mood for the whole morning. Or someone sent you a message with a compliment. Or maybe a barista in your favorite coffee shop put a heart near your name today.

So what if it happens every time? Even more reasons to be grateful!

For example, my 3 things for today that I’m thankful for would be:

  • My loving husband who is always ready to give me a hug
  • A surprise birthday party we organized for a friend (that gives me an opportunity to wear heels for the first time this year!)
  • All the interesting ideas I have for my blog

How to be grateful for what you have

Start by evaluating your day, aiming to see something positive in every scenario. See each moment as a blessing and each failure as a lesson for growth. Appreciate every conversation you engaged in and every person who smiled at you. Then look around and count all the things that bring you joy !

It may feel unnatural at first, even weird, but stick with it long enough and you’ll be amazed by how many blessings you’ve got!

We take so much for granted that many people don’t have! If you are blessed with a loving partner, a bunch of kind friends, and a child, think about millions of lonely people in the world who don’t have any of it. If you live in a developed country, have access to clean water, and there is a park nearby, you already have a ton to be grateful for!

Writing your own list of 100 things to be thankful for is not hard

When you are new to the concept of daily gratitude, writing 100 things can seem overwhelming. That’s why I recommend starting your gratitude practice with only 3-5 things per day.

You’ll notice that on most days you’ll be able to come up with more than that! Because as soon as you start looking for the good things that happened during the day, your mind will naturally begin generating more ideas and finding new things to be thankful for.

I recommend doing “100 things I’m grateful for” exercise at least two times per year. You can even compare your lists and maybe recognize some new things you are thankful for that you didn’t have half a year ago. Or maybe you had them but were taking them for granted and couldn’t recognize them as blessings!

Use this example list as inspiration to come up with your own 100 things to be grateful for!

100 Things To Be Grateful For: Gratitude List Example

  • Mental health. I’ll start with a deep one right away! Mental wellbeing lets you express emotions, interact with others, understand your surroundings, and enjoy life to the fullest . Have you ever stopped to appreciate it?
  • Friends who are always there for you. Even if you are blessed with one person in your life who loves you, be forever grateful for it! Life without friends is not fully lived.
  • Traveling. There are different kinds of travelers. Someone aims to visit all 50 states in the US. Others don’t stop until they travel to every country in the world . For most people, a road trip to a local sight is already an awesome unique experience. Be grateful for every trip you were able to hop on!
  • Coffee. I’ll risk sounding like an addict here but coffee makes every morning so much better!
  • New beginnings. You are the creator of your life and there is always an option to start off with a clean slate .
  • Ability to feel. Joy, gratitude, hope, interest, love, and all the other positive emotions are amazing! Imagine not being able to feel any of it!
  • Teachers. Almost everything we know we owe to our teachers. From school teachers and parents to every role model that taught you something about life, be grateful for all these people and the lessons you learned from them.
  • Mondays. If you don’t agree that Mondays are worth being grateful for, this might change your mind .
  • Yoga. Never had the time to take a yoga class and be part of the movement? Start today.
  • Oceans. People who live near the oceans are so blessed! I had to fly about 7 thousand kilometers to just swim in one for my honeymoon. Let’s just appreciate that they exist and are always available for us to swim in, shall we?

11. Parents. They helped you through the early challenges and raised you into a beautiful human being you are now. They probably did their best at the time, please appreciate all their efforts!

12. First kiss. One never forgets a first kiss. How was yours?

13. First date. Whether it was good or bad, your must have learned a lot from it. Send a mental thanks to that person right now for playing a part in your personality development!

14. Romantic affection. This is the feeling that drives us, creates butterflies in our stomachs and makes us feel alive.

15. Friends. Remember your earliest friends in the kindergarten? And the ones you had at every stage of your life? Each of them was in your life for a reason, so be thankful for each soul who ever touched yours.

16. Soulmates. Not everyone is blessed with a soulmate. But when you are, make sure to appreciate that person as they deserve. If you are still looking for yours, there are some powerful affirmations that should help!

17. Everyone who comes to your birthdays. Unless you are a lonely person who spends birthdays alone (I hope that’s not the case but if that’s you, do something about it!), there are people who are happy to celebrate every year with you. Think about all your previous birthdays and feel the gratitude for everyone who was there.

18. Grandparents. These people are created to spoil us, aren’t they? Be grateful for every precious moment with your grandma or grandpa, and extra grateful if you met any of your great-grandparents.

19. Babies. Whether you have your own or don’t, let’s just appreciate how cute and soft babies are! You were one too once, you know.

20. Everyone who helped raise you. It might be a neighbor who babysat you, an uncle who always brought you candy, or some kind person you have no blood relation to. They all deserve your gratitude!

21. Siblings and cousins. I was the only child for a very long time. If you had someone else to play with, this is a great reason to thank the universe!

22. Children. You may be thankful for your children, for children you played with when you were small, or even for a free will to not have children if you don’t want your own.

23. Pets. Don’t they just make us so much happier?

Be grateful for the little things

24. Sunshine. Light and warmth on your cheek is a good enough reason to feel thankful.

25. Nourishing food. You made it to this age, right? Appreciate all the food that keeps you alive, especially when it’s delicious!

26. Hot tea. Let’s save coffee for energized mornings and enjoy every sip of warm tea when we cuddle with a book on a cool night.

27. Taxis. Depending on where you live this might not be the case for you, but in my area taxis are lifesavers sometimes! Especially at the start of pandemic when all the city transportation had stopped.

28. Scented candles. I’m lighting a nice-smelling candle almost every evening, with special love for seasonal ones like a cinnamon pumpkin candle for autumn or a fresh lemon mint one for summer. I’ve even included this into my fall activities challenge!

29. Delicious desserts. Let’s send some loving energy to all the people who invented desserts. They surely deserve it!

30. Furniture. Not the first thing on your gratitude list for sure but an integral part of your daily life. Say thank you for your bed, desk, chair, your wardrobe, and all the cupboards that make your life so easy and organized.

31. Cute puppies. Or kitties. For every bad emotion you may experience, there is a cute video with a little animal that will make your smile. Extra gratitude points if you have one at home!

32. Bath bombs. Looks good, smells good , helps wash your stress away. What’s not to love?

33. Habit trackers. Picking up a bunch of good habits can transform your life tremendously over time. Let’s appreciate all the creators of beautiful habit trackers that make the process easier and more fun!

34. Elevators. I used to walk up to 13th floor on heels to see my boyfriend. No fun! Say thank you if your elevator never breaks.

35. Netflix. Even if it feels like a waste of time sometimes, let’s be grateful for all the fun relaxing hours and great series Netflix has brought into our life.

36. Plants and trees. Another thing we all have and usually take for granted. Nature is amazing and deserves our love!

37. Smiles. Studies show that happy people smile about 2 times more than the rest. Make it a part of your daily happiness routine and be thankful to everyone who makes you smile!

38. Warm hugs. A good hug is the best way to support someone you love without words in the difficult times. Scientists say you need at least 8 hugs per day to be happy. How many do you give?

39. Deep conversations. Every thoughtful conversation helps you connect better with a person and strengthen your relationships. Look back at every talk you had with your bestie and appreciate each bonding opportunity!

40. All people who you cross paths with. Not everyone comes into your life to stay. Some are just passing by so that you can learn something and become a better version of yourself. Be grateful for every person you were blessed to meet!

41. Salaries. This one is obvious, no? Thank salaries and jobs for letting you survive another month.

42. Hobbies. Hobbies allow you to express your creativity , feel passionate about something, and find like-minded people to spend time with.

43. Languages. Imagine not knowing English! How would the day-to-day world look like for you? Every language we learn opens a new part of the world for us so let’s appreciate our ability to learn and all the resources available to us.

44. All romantic relationships. To feel loved is a strong internal desire of every human being. Even if some people don’t stay in your life, be grateful for having them in the first place. Besides, it’s probably meant to be like that to make room for your true love.

45. Dark nights. Let’s be thankful for every dark night as it makes us appreciate the morning that always comes after it!

46. Road trips. Road trips are always fun and full of moments to remember !

47. Ability to learn and grow. If you have a growth mindset , you know there is no limit to personal growth. Be grateful for your brain that can learn new things and broaden your horizons!

48. Adventures. Everyone’s life is unique and full of interesting adventures! If you can’t think of any recent adventure to be grateful for, it’s probably time to organize one!

49. Fitness. We know some things make us fat but let’s appreciate that there are also things that make us fit!

50. Clean water. If you had access to clean drinking water today, you are already blessed!

51. Technology and Internet. I feel old saying that I remember life without computers and mobile phones. How different and limited it was! Let’s say thanks for all the wonderful opportunities technology brought to us!

52. Ability to read. According to statistics , about half of US adults literally can’t read. If you reached this point in the article, you definitely have something to be thankful for.

53. Sky. Clear blue sky, funny clouds, or wonderful shades of pink during sunset? The sky is never the same but we can always rely on it being up there and inspiring us!

54. Text messages. Be grateful for every text message you receive from people in your life as at the very least it means they remember about you.

55. Mornings. Every morning you get another chance to live fully and improve your life. Every time you open your eyes there is another day for you to live and enjoy!

56. Seasons. Every part of the year has its charm. I love cozy autumn days the most but each season is a wonderful time that deserves our gratitude.

57. Warm showers. Staying under a warm waterfall every day that washes away all the worries and negative thoughts is a privilege we should appreciate more.

58. Positive affirmations. We have the power to change our reality and affirmations make it easier to start. You can affirm wealth, good health, and even find friendship or your soulmate if you do it right.

59. Social media. Other than sharing your life events with friends and being more social overall, social media can be used for all kinds of nice causes like raising awareness or selling good stuff your audience needs.

60. Your bed. It makes you feel safe, warm, and comfortable every night. It’s so good you need to make an effort to leave it every morning. How come you don’t feel thankful for your wonderful bed yet?

61. Roof above your head. This is one of those basic things we often take for granted. Your home gives you safety and convenience in so many ways that it’s not at all comparable with living in the wild forest, for example. Whenever you are at home, look around and find a bunch of things that are worth being grateful for.

62. Daily plans. You have a chance to plan each of your days however you want it and live according to the plan. Isn’t it another reason to feel thankful and alive?

63. Eyes that open every day. You can see everything that happens around you, and you have two of them! Thank your eyes for serving you well even when you get them tired of all the screen time.

64. Ability to breathe. Take a deep breath and you instantly feel more relaxed. Continue for a few minutes and your stress starts to melt away. Isn’t this amazing?

65. Legs and feet that let you walk. Do you know how much easier your life is compared to someone who can’t walk? Be thankful for all the bones and muscles that allow you to do this.

66. Waking up again every day. When you open your eyes after sleeping through the night, be grateful for the gift of another day you got to live, and make the most of it!

67. Ability to see colors. According to science , human eye can distinguish about 1 million different shades and colors. It makes our world bright and helps us perceive it more clearly. Imagine everything around being in black and white, do you think you’d feel different?

68. Abundance of air around you. Have you watched the movie called IO (2019) ? It is about a post-cataclysmic Earth where there is no air left and everyone has to move to another planet. Fantasy films like this make me appreciate the unlimited air we got at our disposal!

69. All the complicated systems inside you. All the processes that work without your control or even awareness. Blood pumping, air flowing, cells rejuvenating, thousands of neural connections being built and used. Imagine if you had to understand and control it all every second!

70. Medicine. Today we can make the headache go away just by taking a pill and we don’t die from a cold like many people in the past. Isn’t it enough to be grateful for?

71. Strong cells that created you. There were two strong cells, one from each of your parents, that made your birth possible. Let’s appreciate the fact that we are even here!

72. Mindfulness. The movement of being in the present moment more wasn’t even a thing a few decades ago. Today, we have all these ways to be more mindful every day and so many useful resources to support the process!

73. Ability to heal. Have you ever noticed how fast your skin heals when you accidentally cut it? Our bodies are very strong and have the ability to regenerate after injuries, which we should be always grateful for.

74. Subconscious mind. If you were to read The Power Of Your Subconscious Mind , you’d realize how much we underestimate our subconscious. It is responsible for roughly 95% of our daily life: all the habits, routine actions, all the systems inside you that work like a clock, and so on. You don’t have to consciously make every inhale and exhale, do you?

75. Ability to write. Being a blogger, I obviously love writing. I also mention journaling a lot throughout this blog as it’s great for releasing emotions and getting clarity on whatever bothers you. Writing lets you use messenger apps to talk to people and solve lots of daily tasks. I think we don’t give it enough credit!

Be grateful for the things that didn’t work out

76. Intuition. We all have some kind of gut feeling that tells us if something isn’t right and stops us from making more mistakes.

77. Ability to let go. Time heals everything. What feels like the end of the world at one moment, is recognized as just an experience a year later. We learn to let go and start anew, accept it as a lesson and grow.

78. Bad relationships. Every person who hurts you still teaches you something or adds to building your character. I believe that some bad relationships are given to us so we can fully appreciate a true diamond when we find it, and make an effort to keep it.

79. Wounds. Without wounds, we wouldn’t take good care of our bodies and without pain we wouldn’t appreciate good health as it deserves.

80. Unfulfilling jobs. First of all, bad jobs still help us survive, so this is one thing to be grateful for. Secondly, they make us realize we are meant for more, aim to improve our skills and look for our passions. Let’s be thankful for this motivation!

81. Biggest dreams. Without big dreams we would never achieve anything at all. They keep us going and inspire us to improve our lives.

82. Annoying neighbors. Every time after hours of renovation noise from next door, I appreciate the silence so much more!

83. Lessons. From traditional education to all the life lessons we learn through the years, there is a lot to be thankful for.

84. Guidance. There is a reason why some things don’t happen exactly when or like we want them. I believe that everything happens for a reason and we are protected by a higher power from the worst-case scenarios. Right things always happen at the right time.

85. Challenges. Every challenge we face makes us stronger and helps us grow. We are never given challenges we can’t overcome: each one is necessary for your unique journey.

86. Closed doors. When one door closes, another opens. If not, we look for windows. Each time you get rejected, you learn to be more creative and think out of the box in order to get whatever you need. If all the doors were open for everyone, life would probably be extremely boring. And the best places would be super crowded.

87. Failures. There is hardly any successful person who never failed at something. In most cases, successful careers and businesses are built after countless mistakes, tweaks, and figuring out how to go about it. Be grateful for every failure and just stand up one more time!

89. Old photographs. Aren’t we blessed with the existence of cameras? They allow us to reminisce on wonderful moments years or even decades after they happen.

91. Walking in the rain. Whenever you are caught in the rain and everyone is running around, stop for a moment to appreciate the freshness of the air and how amazing it smells!

92. Cozy evenings. I’m always grateful for the ability to cuddle on a sofa with a book and a cozy blanket. Are you?

93. Holidays. A day of resting, eating something delicious, and maybe even meeting with your family .

95. Sunsets. Because aren’t they mesmerizing and unique every time?

96. Insights. Those moments when you suddenly find a great creative solution after dealing with a difficult problem for a while.

97. Sex. One of the not-so-many ways to get pleasure in life surely deserves to be on this list of 100 things to be grateful for!

98. Sleeping well. People who suffer from insomnia surely know how to appreciate a good night of sleep.

99. Gifts. Small and big presents that we give and receive.

That’s a lot easier than you think! You may use a similar structure and categories I used if you like. Go through each area of your life one by one, and pay attention to the little things that come to your mind.

Make a brain dump first and write down everything off the top of your head. Then get back to each item you have already written and think about related events, memories, and emotions you experienced that are also worth being grateful for.

It only seems difficult before you start! As soon as you get in the flow and fill your heart with gratitude, you’ll hardly be able to stop at 100 things!

People say that life is a ruthless competition. You have to outclass other job seekers to succeed in an interview. Second best is quickly forgotten . From our parents to our teachers and managers, everyone says that we should strive to be the best, and end up proud of our achievements. But just as things aren’t only black and white in life, the hiring managers may take you by surprise with a different attitude and some questions you’d hardly expect. “What are you grateful for in life?” is definitely one such question. You may face it when applying for a job in an NGO , or in another organization where cooperation matters more than competition , and they are looking for people with a specific mindset.

Before I proceed to 7 sample answers , I want you to realize something. Being grateful for what you have in life is the key to achieve long-lasting happiness . Because there will always be someone better than us, in whatever endeavor, and we never have things fully under control . Sometimes we fail, and sometimes we are simply unlucky. But while we can breathe, walk, pursue interesting careers, while we are free men and have someone or something we love, we are in fact incredibly lucky , and always have something to be grateful for. Such an attitude helps a lot to cope with any disappointment we may experience , be it at work or in our personal life.

Let’s have a look at 7 sample answers to this interesting interview question. I tried to include a variety of answers on my list, including some unconventional choices .   • I am most grateful for all opportunities I’ve been given in life . Honestly speaking, if I wasn’t born in this country in a loving family, I’d hardly have a chance to study at the school where I studied, and to apply for such an amazing job. I did not give up, and here I am today, ready for the next one. Thinking about most of my friends and present colleagues, who easily get upset and struggle to leave their comfort zone , I see how different I am. But it wouldn’t be the case without all the challenges I’ve faced and had to overcome.
  • I am most grateful for my good health . So any young people suffer from all sort of allergies, food intolerance, auto-immune diseases and what not. That is the consequence of the terrible way we treat our environment , and of course also of our diet. In my opinion, you cannot really enjoy life when you struggle with health and visit doctors all the time. But I’ve been lucky to grow up in the mountains, in the fresh air, eating healthy, moving a lot. Now I am thirty-five but look younger than most people who are twenty-five. And I haven’t visited the doctor a single time in the last seven years. I am incredibly grateful for this, because I know that things could have ended completely differently , if I was born in some big city and if my parents weren’t on whole-foods plant-based diet.
  • Actually I am grateful for being born in the 70ties, growing up without mobile phones, social networks, artificial intelligence, and all these things that basically destroyed normal human interactions. Many young people are completely enslaved by these technologies , and they do not even realize it. But I had a normal childhood. We played, we talked, looked each other in the eyes. Show your gratefulness and positive attitude towards life

Remember that when they ask about gratefulness, it means that they are looking for people who are grateful, people who can appreciate others, people who always see the glass half-full . And that’s exactly the attitude you should try to show in your answer.

It doesn’t matter whether you are most grateful for your parents, education, country, century, or even for the hardships you went through (and they made you stronger). As long as you show gratefulness, and a desire to pay back for all the blessings you’ve got in life, perhaps with a good service in their organization, they will be satisfied with your interview answer.

Five Myths about Gratitude

For more than a decade, I have devoted my career to the study of gratitude. My research, and research by my colleagues, has linked gratitude to a host of psychological, physical, and social benefits: stronger immune systems, lower blood pressure, more feelings of joy, and a greater sense of social connection, among many others.

Even armed with years of scientific data, making the case for gratitude can still be an uphill battle. At times I’ve been confronted with objections, reservations, or flat out hostility to the idea that gratitude is a virtue, or that we should devote more energy to cultivating an attitude of gratitude.

While I appreciate the questions and concerns people have about gratitude, I think many of the objections are based on fundamental myths or misconceptions about what gratitude really is. And unfortunately, these misconceptions deter people from practicing gratitude—and reaping its many rewards.

Here’s my take on five of the most pervasive myths about gratitude.

1. Gratitude leads to complacency

I’ve often heard the claim that if you’re grateful, you’re not going to be motivated to challenge the status quo or improve your lot in life. You’ll just be satisfied, complacent, lazy and lethargic, perhaps passively resigned to an injustice or bad situation. You’ll give up trying to change something.

In fact, studies suggest that the opposite is true: Gratitude not only doesn’t lead to complacency, it drives a sense of purpose and a desire to do more.

My colleagues and I have found that people are actually more successful at reaching their goals when they consciously practice gratitude. When we ask people to identify six personal goals on which they want to work over the next 10 weeks—these could be academic, spiritual, social, or health-related goals, like losing weight—we find that study participants randomly assigned to keep a gratitude journal, recording five things for which they’re grateful once a week, exert more effort toward those goals than participants who aren’t made to practice gratitude. In fact, the grateful group makes 20 percent more progress toward their goals than the non-grateful group—but they don’t stop there. They report still continuing to strive harder toward their goals.

This finding does not surprise me because people made to keep a gratitude journal in my studies consistently report feeling more energetic, alive, awake, and alert. Yet they don’t report feeling more satisfied with their progress toward their goals than other people do. They don’t become complacent or satisfied to the point that they stop making an effort.

This relates to other research showing that gratitude inspires “pro-social” behavior such as generosity, compassion, and charitable giving—none of which suggests passivity or resignation. Instead, it suggests that gratitude motivates people to go out and do things for others—to give back, I think, some of the goodness that they recognize receiving themselves.

In fact, my colleagues and I published a study in Motivation and Emotion a few years ago which found that kids who were more grateful than their peers at age 10 were by age 14 performing more pro-social activities and feeling greater social integration, meaning that they wanted to give back to their community and family. Again, the grateful people didn’t show passive resignation; they were out in the world doing stuff to make life better for others.

All this evidence supports an observation made by William Damon, the noted developmental psychologist, in his book The Path to Purpose , which is about how we can help kids find their calling in life. “The sense of gratitude for being able to partake in what the world has to offer, and to have a chance to make one’s own contribution,” writes Damon, “is common in those with a sense of purpose.”

2. Gratitude is just a naïve form of positive thinking

Some people claim that gratitude is just about thinking nice thoughts and expecting good things—and ignores the negativity, pain, and suffering in life.

Well, evidence shows it’s much more than that. Based on my research, I’ve come to define gratitude as a specific way of thinking about receiving a benefit and giving credit to others beside oneself for that benefit. In fact, gratitude can be very difficult because it requires that you recognize your dependence on others, and that’s not always positive. You have to humble yourself, in the sense that you have to become a good receiver of others’ support and generosity. That can be very hard—most people are better givers than receivers.

What’s more, feelings of gratitude can sometimes stir up related feelings of indebtedness and obligation, which doesn’t sound like positive thinking at all. If I am grateful for something you provided to me, I have to take care of that thing—I might even have to reciprocate at some appropriate time in the future. That type of indebtedness or obligation can be perceived very negatively—it can cause people real discomfort.

The data bear this out: When people are grateful, they aren’t necessarily free of negative emotions—we don’t find that they necessarily have less anxiety or less tension or less unhappiness. Practicing gratitude magnifies positive feelings more than it reduces negative feelings. If it was just positive thinking, or just a form of denial, you’d experience no negative thoughts or feelings when you’re keeping a gratitude journal, for instance. But, in fact, people do.

So gratitude isn’t just a nice, warm, fuzzy feeling. It has responsibilities that go along with it that can make it difficult or challenging for people under certain circumstances.

3. Gratitude makes us too self-effacing

Some people assume that if I am grateful, I give credit to others for my own success. When I recognize the ways others have helped me, I risk overlooking my own hard work or natural abilities.

Research suggests that’s not the case. In one study , researchers administered a purportedly difficult test and told the study participants that they could win money for doing well on the test. Then the participants received a helpful hint that would help them get a high score.

All the participants regarded the hint as helpful. But only those who felt personally responsible for their own score felt grateful for the hint. Gratitude was actually associated with a greater sense of personal control over one’s success.

We have corroborated this in other studies: Grateful people give credit to others, but not at the expense of acknowledging their own responsibility for their success. They take credit, too. It’s not either/or—either I did this all myself or somebody else did it for me. Instead, they recognize their own feats and abilities while also feeling gratitude toward the people—parents, teachers—who helped them along the way.

4. Gratitude isn’t possible—or appropriate—in the midst of adversity or suffering

Some argue that it’s impossible to be grateful in the midst of suffering. When life is going well, when there’s abundance—sure, then we can be grateful. But what about when we’re facing hard times?

I believe not only is gratitude possible in those circumstances—it’s vital to helping us get through them. When faced with adversity, gratitude helps us see the big picture and not feel overwhelmed by the setbacks we’re facing in the moment. And as I’ve suggested above, that attitude of gratitude can actually motivate us to tackle the challenges before us. Without a doubt, it can be hard to take this grateful perspective, but research suggests it is possible, and it is worth it.

Consider a study led by my colleague Philip Watkins, published in the Journal of Positive Psychology , in which participants were asked to recall an unpleasant, unresolved memory—a time they were victimized or betrayed or hurt in some way that still made them upset. The participants were randomly assigned to complete one of three different writing exercises, one of which involved focusing on positive aspects of the upsetting experience and considering how it might now make them feel grateful.

The results showed that the gratitude group reported feeling more closure and less unpleasant emotions than participants who didn’t write about their experience from a grateful perspective. The grateful writers weren’t told to deny or ignore the negative aspects of their memory. Yet they seemed more resilient in the face of those troubles.

Similarly, roughly a decade ago, I asked people suffering from severe neuromuscular disorders to keep a gratitude journal over two weeks. Given that much of their lives involved intense discomfort and visits to pain clinics, I wondered whether they’d be able to find anything to be grateful for. Yet not only did they find reasons to be grateful, but they also experienced significantly more positive emotions than a similar group that didn’t keep a gratitude journal. The gratitude group also felt more optimistic about the upcoming week, felt more connected to others (even though many of them lived alone), and reported getting more sleep each night—an important indicator of overall health and well-being.

So again, this is a gratitude myth that can be debunked. Science suggests we can cultivate or maintain an attitude of gratitude through hard times, and that we’ll be better for it.

5. You have to be religious to be grateful

This myth is easy to bust: The new science of gratitude has clearly shown that people can have a grateful disposition even if they’re not religious. What’s more, it’s possible to boost levels of gratitude in people regardless of whether they’re religious. While some research suggests that religious people might be more inclined to feel or practice gratitude, they are by no means the only ones who score high on gratitude scales.

And among religious people, feeling grateful to God isn’t mutually exclusive with feeling grateful to other potential sources of goodness. In some of my research, we’ve asked people to identify the sources of their success and positive qualities, like their intelligence or attractiveness. People who score high in gratitude are more likely to give credit to God than are people who score low in gratitude. But those grateful people are more likely to give credit across the board, meaning that they also give credit to other sources, such as other people, genetics, and hard work.

I believe many of these myths spring from a fundamental misconception about gratitude: that it is a simplistic emotion. But part of what has kept me interested in gratitude for roughly 15 years is that it is deceptively complicated; each year I seem to encounter another nuance or layer to it. Once we appreciate these complexities of gratitude, documented by years of scientific research, we are in a better position to enjoy all the strengths and goodness it can bring.

Thankful Writing Prompt and Lesson

This week is a great time to take advantage of the upcoming holiday and focus on expository writing skills! I like to have students write a short paragraph about three things for which they are thankful. It’s relevant, meaningful, and something nice for your students to share with their family. I’ll list each step of the writing process below. If you want to save some prep time, you can grab the printable and digital lesson here .

Start the lesson by having students fill in a bubble map with things in their life for which they are thankful.

Pre-Writing

Have students select the three most meaningful things from their bubble map. After selecting three things, have students create a tree map to record each item and explain why that item is special.

Use the tree maps to set up the structure of the paragraph. Providing students with a sentence-by-sentence outline for writing their paragraphs, will help them stay focused and organized.

Rubric & Examples

If you’re using a paragraph grading rubric, now is good time to review the writing expectations. This would also be a beneficial time in the writing process to show students an example of a paragraph that meets each criteria of the rubric.

Final Draft
