Sample Essay on How to Save Money: How to Be in Good Funds When You Are a Student

Students are always looking for ways to save money. Some turn to part-time jobs while others resort to reducing their expenditure. This is a sample essay on how to save money that could inspire you to write a masterpiece on this issue.

The life of a college student is not as rosy as most people imagine it to be. Well, there are amazing parties and all sorts of fun things to do when in college, but that’s just it. Students have societal expectations to deal with. They have assignments and projects to deliver and exams to ace. This is no easy task since some of the courses in college are tough and ever-absent professors don’t make things easier as well. There is also the issue of student finances to deal with. Without a steady income, college students are forced to rely on student loans and funds from their parents to see out a semester. These funds, however, are not always enough and students are forced to turn to unorthodox means to make sure they have enough for their education. Students are forced to reduce their spending on certain items, and this usually comes with harsh consequences.

In an attempt to save more, students would resort to cheap meals or even skip some of them altogether. These cheap meals are usually very unhealthy, and the students miss out on the vital nutrients that are needed for healthy growth and development. Some of the cheap meals that students turn to in an attempt to save money include fast foods such as French fries and burgers. These meals are unhealthy, and their regular consumption has a bad impact on people’s health.

Cutting out on entertainment is another ‘luxury’ that students do away with to save money. Movies and music concerts cost money and students avoid them so as to save as much as they can. Some even avoid going out with their friends and spend most of their time in their rooms. Entertainment, however, is very important for the emotional development of a human being, and students are advised to take time for entertainment. A lack of entertainment among college students may cause depression and other emotional issues since all that the students will be thinking about is books and their academic assignments.

Students also turn to free software and applications so as to save money. These non-premium versions, however, come with a lot of bugs and students are at risk of virus attacks to the minimum.

Some would even terminate their gym membership to save money. Most colleges have gyms on campus, but they are usually in a poor state and that is why students visit gyms that are off campus. When times get tough, most students would terminate their membership so as to save as much as they can. Without working out, students get unhealthy, and this brings a lot of challenges.

Tough times call for tough measures. Students resort to the above-mentioned activities to save money, but these methods have some harsh consequences attached to them.

The first step people might take is recording their spending. It is a practical decision that allows for transparency and calculation. According to Better Money Habits, “Keep track of all your expenses—that means every coffee, household item and cash tip. Once you have your data, organize the numbers by categories, such as gas, groceries and mortgage, and total each amount. Consider using your credit card or bank statements to help you with this” (“Saving Money Tips – 8 Simple Ways to Save Money”). It might seem painstaking, but this process will help you to note how payments and purchases affect your balance, and savings ultimately.

Another important factor in saving money is creating a budget. This is usually done after reviewing all your transactions and what you need to use your money for in order to survive. As stated by America Saves, “Create a budget that you can stick to. Look at places you can cut back in order to pay down high-interest debt and save. Each week, check your finances to make sure you are staying within your budget” (Bryan, Katie). The most essential factor in creating a budget is knowing you can keep to it through the bumps on the road of your finances.

As an extension of your budget, you can create a plan for your spending. You can give exact percentages and figures. According to Better Money Habits, “Try to save 10 to 15 percent of your income. If your expenses are so high that you can’t save that much, it might be time to cut back. To do so, identify nonessentials that you can spend less on, such as entertainment and dining out, and find ways to save on your fixed monthly expenses” (“Saving Money Tips – 8 Simple Ways to Save Money”). It might be painful to slash out certain areas of your life you enjoy spending money on, but in order to save money, you have to sacrifice some of your desires in order to achieve your goals.

A useful tip in addition to the previously mentioned points is that you can save money with a certain item or items in mind. Sometimes focusing on a certain object of desire can work better for people in terms of saving money. According to Better Money Habits, “One of the best ways to save money is to set a goal. Start by thinking of what you might want to save for—perhaps you’re getting married, planning a vacation or saving for retirement. Then figure out how much money you’ll need and how long it might take you to save it” (“Saving Money Tips – 8 Simple Ways to Save Money”). Whether short-term or long-term, it is good to have a goal in mind while saving money.

Finally, prioritizing the way you spend and save money is a key element. According to The Balance, “Each individual will have slightly different priorities, but no matter what those priorities are retirement and your emergency fund will come first. After that, you can focus on your other goals and building wealth. Once you determine your priorities, you can create a chart or excel sheet that lets you track your progress on your goals” (Caldwell, Miriam). So, setting priorities is a nuance you should take into account while creating your spending and saving plans.

Looking back, we can say for certain that saving money is possible for the average citizen. However, there are certain ways you have to go about it: noting down your spending, making a budget, creating a plan for saving money, setting a savings goal for particular items, and figuring out your priorities.

A. Attention Getter : Did you ever take time to imagine a country without banks?. Where no one knew what savings were, and what all people do is consume all income attained? So think now about the current situation. About you, are you spending more than your earnings? B. Tie to the audience : Now, think about an important and prominent person you know. For instance, President Barack Obama or any rich relative/friend you know of. Do you think he/she make savings? I choose to discuss this topic because saving is a very important aspect of human’s life. It is one of the necessary and important things a person should do for his/her financial well being. C. Credentials; Having experienced the importance of savings and having been saving money for a long makes me confidence standing to argue the importance of saving to people and encouraging them to save as well. Once the habit of saving is instilled, it develops automatically and becomes so easier for an individual to be saving on a regular basis. D. The purpose of my speech is therefore to persuade people to save money and avoid spending more than they are earning hence going bankrupt. It explains the benefits of saving money, how to save money, and how to reward yourself after you save money. E. Thesis Preview; Everyone, including the poor should be involved in savings. Savings are important for every individual however small it is on either weekly or monthly basis.

F. Main points (I)

1. Emergency purposes; One most important reason why you should save money is for emergency purposes (Cardwell 1). It is very imperative to have an emergency fund account for covering any unexpected expenses. You never know when emergencies will arise. You may get fired at work, or you may be required to pay a huge amount medical bills or any other unexpected bill (Mahalo 1). 2. Savings increase incomes portion; One of the best thing about one saving his/her money is that, once an individual makes the decision for saving a portion of his/her income -no matter how little it is, surprisingly one finds his/her income increasing as one becomes more and more focused to raise a larger amount. 3. No borrowing out money; Additionally, savings account ensures that one does not have to consider borrowing from other people, bank or even from one’s retirement account (Syncrat Publications 1). Savings for one’s future hence acts as a way of staying away from debts and banks debts loan as well as staying out of financial difficulties. 4. More options and opportunities; In addition, the money you save is the money you earn as well as the money set aside which gives more opportunities and options down the road. For instance, although some individuals do not take it as worthwhile, saving as little as 15$ or more adds up to the savings over a period as one continues to save. As finances increases, increase your savings accordingly. This amount saved increases with the interest charged and hence increasing your amount in the savings account. 5. Retirement reasons; One another important reasons why you should save is for your retirement reasons. The sooner an individual starts saving for his/her future retirement, the less he/she will have to save in his/her future. This allows an individual to have funds/money for using even when he/she has retired. 6. Other usage; One can also save money for usage in other ways, for instance, saving for a down payment of a property such as house, save for luxury items and for trips/vacations (have fun), save for buying a new car, save money for advancing your education and other activities. This ensures that an individual does not impulse buy hence using money that was unplanned. 7. Reward yourself; However, by savings, we do not mean you restrict your life, become a miser just to save. An individual can reward himself or herself by one he/she hits a certain target by buying himself or herself something he or she fancies. However, do not empty the savings account but instead use money from the payroll (Cooper 1). After rewarding yourself, start a new higher goal/target and keep raising it as you attain it. II. Main point 2; How do you save? a. First set a goal on how much you need to save. b. Make a list of monthly expenses, surpluses and what to cut on and calculate on the extra amount. c. Keep records. d. Start a saving plan by opening a savings account in a desirable bank with the best interest rates as well as minimum balance requirements (WikiHow 1). e. Then curb down your expenses by eliminating unnecessary expenses. For instance, move to a less expensive apartment, sell one car if you have two, restrict eating out or too much and others. f. Finally get out of all your debts first in order to save peacefully.

III. Conclusion,

A. Purpose; Today, the purpose of my speech had been connvinsing people on the importance of saving money. Now I hope that my speech has encourged all those who did not give savings a thought. B. Thesis Preview; As my speech and points suggests, people are required to know how to save money erregardless of their financial status. Even the most intelligent, well paid, responsible and practical individuals can at times be overwhelmed by their expenses and become bankrupt. Writing Prompts For Essays About Money

1. good uses for money, 2. the “dark side” of money, 3. money’s role in history, 4. morality vs. money, 5. can money buy happiness, 6. how to save money.

“Imagine the world without money. We will eventually come to a point where we will be asking questions like “what’s the point of life”. Hope and goals are some of the important things that will keep a man going in life. Without any sense of achievement or motivation, there wouldn’t be any inventions or progress in the world. People work to get money and then people work harder to get more money. This cycle of life that keeps a man motivated and hopeful is one of the biggest advantages of the system of money”

This essay gives readers a general outlook on money and its advantages and disadvantages. It gives people equal opportunity to work for their dreams and motivates them to be productive members of society, while it also raises the question of greed. Money, without a doubt, has its positive and negative aspects, but it exists and is only becoming more critical.

“But the barter economy was flawed. There was no universal measure for determining the value of an item. It was all based on the subjective opinion of the individuals involved. And to make matters worse, the barter economy relied on both sides wanting something the other had to offer. Trade, therefore, could be sluggish and frustrating. Human beings needed something different, and money was the answer.”

Wilkins writes about how money revolutionized the way trade was conducted. The barter system involved trading any objects if both parties agreed to a deal, such as trading animal skins for fish or medicine for timber. However, the only measure of an item’s value was how much one party wanted it- both sides needed to have something the other wanted. The introduction of money allowed people to put a solid value on commodities, making trade easier.

“So, if you were to closely observe the dirty, disordered canvas of economic progress during the 20th and 21 st century, you should conclude that, for all its warts, capitalism has been the winner. It has sometimes caused pain; suffered from serious cycles; and often needed the clout of the state- such as we have seen from September 2008. It has also been quite resistant to sensible regulation. Even so, the basic institutions of capitalism have worked, not just in the US and the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and development) nations, but also many developing countries, of which India is one.”

Albeit lengthy, Montgomery’s essay discusses the debate between socialism and capitalism, a topic of which money is at the core. Montgomery describes Karl Marx’s criticism of capitalism: all the money goes to a few people, not the workers. She believes these are valid to an extent and criticizes certain forms of capitalism and socialism. Neither capitalism nor socialism is perfect, but according to Montgomery, capitalism creates a better economy.

“Being the richest man in the world does not mean you are the happiest man in the world, although money can buy you happiness sometimes, but not always. If we could all appreciate the way life is, the fun, and the beauty I think the world would be better. If people weren’t power hungry maybe we’d have a lesser demand for money. Those people who is money hungry and power hungry need to relax. Money can’t buy you happiness. These individuals need to understand that.”

Higgins implores readers to remember that money is not the only thing people need in the world. He stresses the necessity of money, as it is used to pay for various necessary goods and services; however, he believes it is not a prerequisite for happiness. Material things are temporary, and there are other things we should focus on, like family and friends.

5. An Introduction to Saving Money by Jeremy Vohwinkle

“A financial emergency may take the form of a job loss, significant medical or dental expense, unexpected home or auto repairs, a hurricane or major storm, or something unthinkable, such as a global pandemic. The last thing you want to do is to rely on credit cards with their hefty interest fees or to be forced to take out a loan. That’s where your emergency fund can come in handy. Historically, the formula for an emergency account is to have enough readily available cash to cover three to six months of living expenses.“

Vohwinkle’s essay gives readers some suggestions on how to save more money. Most importantly, he suggests setting up an emergency fund, as all other saving techniques stem from there. He also suggests creating an automatic savings plan and cutting down on “spending leaks,” like buying coffee. You might also be interested in these essays about celebration .

In this essay, write about why money is necessary and the ways to use it for the greater good, and include ways in which it can be used (investing, donating, etc.). For each point, you make, be sure to explain why. Of course, this is entirely subjective; feel free to write about what you consider “good uses” for money.

On the other hand, money also has a negative side —research on money-related issues, such as taxpayer-funded corruption and trading of illegal goods. In your essay, explore this side of money and perhaps give solutions on how to stop these problems.

Money has played a progressively more important role throughout human history. Discuss the development of currency and the economy, from the barter system to the digital world we live in today. You need not go too in-depth, as there is a lot of ground to cover and many eras to research. Be sure to cite reputable sources when discussing history.

Many people warn of “selling your soul” for financial gain. In your essay, you can write about the importance of having solid values in this day and age, where money reigns supreme. What principles do you need to keep in mind? Explain how you can still value money while staying grounded; mention the balance between material needs and others.

As stated in Higgins’ essay, more people have begun to prioritize money over all else. Do you believe that money is truly the most important thing? Can it alone make you happy? Discuss both sides of this question and choose your position accordingly. Be sure to provide precise supporting details for a stronger argument.

Strategies to Save and Protect Money Essay

Accounting for income and expenses will help me correctly understand where the money goes and optimize spending. This can be done either manually, by making notes in a notebook, or with special applications for a personal computer or phone. Thus, the main points of expenditure will be clearly marked, which will help to exclude the purchase of unnecessary goods and services (Office of Investor Education and Advocacy, 2022). Consequently, the process of accumulating and saving money will be significantly simplified.

The second strategy is to set aside at least 15% of the salary for storage or investment. This approach will allow me to adhere to a clear rule, which in the long run will help to save and protect funds. In order to start implementing these strategies, it is necessary to determine the main purpose of savings, as this is an essential aspect of motivation. Prioritization will simplify the task of saving money in the long term.

At the moment, I would rate the degree of my investment risk as moderate. This is manifested in the fact that I realize that it is necessary to competently diversify my portfolio so that the number of high-voltage stocks is not too high. Consequently, most of the attention is paid to slow, conservative growth. However, in addition to this, it is permissible to allocate part of the funds for high-risk projects that may not justify themselves in the future. Given the current situation, looking in the long term is necessary, so stability is a priority for me, although it is limited by insignificant growth.

In order to be able to invest and save money while taking into account the payment of bills and the cost of living, it is necessary to adhere to a number of strategies. Therefore, they consist in highlighting the main items of expenditure that are important for the realization of basic needs. Thus, the rest of the income can be allocated for savings and investments.

To save more money, avoid these 5 common financial mistakes

Marielle Segarra headshot

Common financial mistakes to avoid

This illustration shows a man standing on a teal floor and surrounded by fragments of U.S. dollar bills scattered all around him on the ground.

Financial educator Yanely Espinal shares some of the most common mistakes people make when it comes to borrowing, investing and budgeting their money. rob dobi/Getty Images hide caption

Yanely Espinal was teaching a workshop on financial education this summer when a member of the building's cleaning staff came up to her.

"I wanted to talk to you," he said. "When I first got my job, the [company] offered me a retirement plan. But my cousin told me it was a scam, so I never did it. I feel like I made a mistake."

"My heart wanted to break," says Espinal. She told him: "Your cousin did not serve you well. It's not a scam. It's a benefit ."

She understood how the disconnect might have happened. "He was an older man, a person of color — the type of person often underserved by the financial industry," she says.

As a financial coach and the director of educational outreach at Next Gen Personal Finance , Espinal sees people from all walks of life — including those from underresourced communities — struggle with borrowing, investing and budgeting. She then teaches them how to make better-informed decisions about money.

Here are some of the most common financial mistakes she encounters in her line of work.

Mistake 1: Thinking a loan is free money

If you need money, your instinct might be to borrow from a lender. But remember, a loan is not free money, says Espinal. Those lenders are "running a business and are going to make a profit."

Some of "those interest rates are so high and compound so quickly that the amount you're paying back is significantly more than the amount you borrowed. It can trap you in a cycle of debt."

So put your "business hat on and shop around for the best deal," she says. You may feel desperate, but don't just take the first loan you can get. Go online and look up the terms of different loans. Or go to a credit union, which will often have better interest rates on loans.

Mistake 2: Cosigning loans

Lending to family or friends? Don't be afraid to ask for your money back

Lending to family or friends? Don't be afraid to ask for your money back

If a friend or relative asks you to cosign a loan, don't do it, says Espinal. Cosigning a loan means you're agreeing to be responsible for someone else's debt. If the main borrower misses payments, you must repay the loan. It also means that the debt is on your credit report, which could prevent you from getting a loan or could make a loan you need more expensive.

If you find it hard to say no to a loved one who needs a loan, support that person in other ways, says Espinal. When her godsister asked her to cosign a loan, Espinal declined, but offered to help her find a loan for people with lower credit scores and to look over her credit report to help her boost her score.

Mistake 3: Not putting your money in a high-yield savings account

If your cash is in a traditional savings account, it's probably making little, if any, interest, says Espinal. Rates are as low as 0.01% at major banks.

This conceptual illustration features a silhouette of a person carrying a large egg while standing at the top of a ladder, with several other oversized eggs in the background, all arranged in a pyramid. The illustration is against a light blue textured backdrop. The image can represent themes such as ambition, nurturing new ideas or retirement.

Putting your money in a high-yield savings account is an easy way to grow your savings. rob dobi/Getty Images hide caption

So put those funds in a high-yield savings account with interest rates between about 4% and 5% . These higher-interest rates allow your money to grow and protect your savings against inflation.

"The banks that offer these accounts tend to be lesser-known banks, like online-only banks or mobile-only banks," says Espinal. If that gives you pause, consider this: As long as your bank account is insured by the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.) or your credit union savings account is insured by the NCUA (National Credit Union Administration), your savings will be protected up to a $250,000 limit.

Mistake 4: Spending more when you make more

Some people who earn hundreds of thousands of dollars a year find themselves living paycheck to paycheck. That can happen when people think a higher income means they have to live a lifestyle that matches it, says Espinal. It's a phenomenon called "lifestyle creep" or "lifestyle inflation."

If your spending is eating your savings, you might be experiencing 'lifestyle creep'

If your spending is eating your savings, you might be experiencing 'lifestyle creep'

"And so the money goes into financial obligations that are not necessary: a new watch, a new car, name-brand shoes. We think we deserve it," she says. "But you also deserve to have a dignified retirement and be able to pass generational wealth down to your children."

If you're making more money, your savings rate should also increase . Adjust how much you save based on what you earn. If you have the option, ask your employer to make a direct deposit into your high-yield savings account so that the saved money is automatically set aside.

Mistake 5: Making hype-based investments

5 tips to start investing in the stock market

5 tips to start investing in the stock market

Some people invest in what's trendy right now, like shares of individual stocks, rather than putting money into something less risky, like an index fund — a big bundle of stocks and bonds.

"When you pick stocks, you're trying to predict the future. We're all trying to guess," says Espinal. "Some of those guesses end up being right. But why would you want to leave your entire wealth-building [strategy] to chance?"

If you want to dabble in riskier investments, use a percentage rule, she says. Invest 80% of your money in tried-and-true investments like target-date funds and traditional mutual funds. "The other 20% of your money can go into things that are hot and cool, maybe some crypto or individual stocks."

With this approach, "at least a majority of your money isn't going to be completely risked," she says.

Money Saving Tips

If you are still wondering how to save money fast, here are the 15 saving ideas that we have listed among our college budgeting tips that may help:

money saving tips

  • So one of the best ways to save money is to start cooking - This will help you save a lot on your visits to cafes and restaurants. And the food you cook yourself is healthier and more delicious. If you still want to celebrate a memorable date or spend time with a noisy company of friends, try to buy drinks in stores and relax at home. Then you will not have to overpay in establishments because the prices for food and alcohol in bars and restaurants are higher than in the nearest convenience store or in a hypermarket.
  • Another trick to save money is to bring your lunch - Lunch boxes do not take up much space in your carry-on luggage, and meals that were stored in the refrigerator overnight do not spoil from morning to lunch. For example, salads dressed with mayonnaise can be stored for up to five hours out of the refrigerator, fried or stewed meat, and chicken for up to six. It is more profitable to carry lunch with you, even if you do not know how to cook and use semi-finished products.
  • Walk more - It is a popular point among all cheap living tips. Spending on taxis, gasoline, or using car rentals doesn’t sound that nice if you compare it all to spending time having some fresh air. Additionally, you can save on a subscription to a fitness club. If you are a student, then your trip to the university is worth a penny. This is a perfect way to cut your expenses.
  • Do proper save money planning by paying attention to different discounts, sales, or promotions. When it comes to food, you need to pay attention because expired goods may harm your health. Talking about the looks, you can still look good buying something for less money. If you often order essays , check out the discounts we offer to our regular customers.
  • Student life is unthinkable without some proper rest - nightclubs, cinema, and other types of entertainment. Saving money every week won’t allow you to spend some quality time, but if you arrange something for yourself a few times a month, it won’t do any harm. The entertainment can be cheap and allow you to enjoy yourself without spending a lot of money, so that you could still stick to the saving money plan.
  • Moving on with the money saving life hacks - You need to find the correct way to manage your finances. Try to divide the sum you have for a month equally for each week and do not spend more than you have. But try not to carry all the sum you have for a month. You won’t even notice how all the big bills become smaller and smaller.
  • If you buy food from the market, rather than from the supermarkets, you can bargain with the vendors, saving you some money.
  • Making a shopping list for a month - Such a simple way of saving is contemptuously rejected by many, but in vain. Buying from the list, first of all, you are more or less insured against impulsive purchases (like a massive pack of chips, M & Ms for the promotion, and a bucket of ice cream that you will eat on the very first evening). It is these expenses that subtly undermine the budget. Secondly, you take the food you need in the right amount.
  • Before deciding to buy a book, check out if it’s available on the Web. Now you can download a lot of literature for free. In case you couldn’t find anything, you can always use the library.
  • Share an apartment with your friends - This is probably the best way to save for college. Living in a hostel is not suitable for all students, and renting an apartment in a big city will cost a pretty penny. But there’s no reason to be upset: you can always offer some good friends to share an apartment. Although they will remotely resemble a hostel, the conditions in such housing will be more free space here.
  • Finding a part-time job - A full-time job is usually not beneficial to students’ academic performance. However, you are unlikely to be able to live on one scholarship. Job websites and recruiting agencies can help you find the right job. Temporary work will make it easier to adapt to adult life conditions and hone the professional skills acquired at the university.
  • Save up getting rid of unnecessary things - Freshmen who have just entered their student days strive to save money just like you. You have accumulated many textbooks, lecture notes, and materials for preparing for exams during your studies. Young students are full of the excitement of youthful maximalism and the desire to gain knowledge in all possible ways, so they will gladly buy things from you.
  • One more saving advice that is not that obvious is to choose your credit cards wisely - If you cannot avoid the debt, choose a credit card with an interest-free period, with monthly interest on the balance of funds, with the ability to receive discounts in stores when paying with this card. And never delay your monthly payments. The longer you “stretch” your credit card debt, the more it costs you. Interest rates on consumer loans are high. Try to pay off the monthly payment as high as possible. And never take loans in the future. Student loans are a giant trap that will ruin all your money saving techniques.
  • Cashback platforms - This is one of the easy ways to save money. When you pay for essay online, it is almost always possible to get some of the money back using cashback services. Cashback appeared to tie a client to himself, providing him with additional “buns”. It works roughly like bonus points awarded for purchase - only instead of bonuses, you get real money. Sometimes the share reaches 30%: companies are ready to work with zero or negative, to get a client.
  • Fitness app - There is always no money and free time for students. So here is the last of our money tips. Most young people, of course, want to look good. What if there is no way to visit the fitness club? Download the 7 Minute Workout application (IOS, Android), which allows you to perform a set of seven-minute exercises at home without special equipment.

By following all these simple rules, you will learn the best ways to save money fast, know how to use it properly, and even put it in your stash. This will bring many rewarding experiences in the future. Don't forget to find out our paper topic generator for your essay ideas on our service.

How To Save Money Essay

There are many ways to save money, and it all starts with knowing where your money is going. One way to do this is to track your spending for a month and see where you can cut back. Maybe you can pack your lunch instead of buying it every day, or cut back on nights out. Once you know where your money is going, you can start to make changes to save.

Another way to save money is to make more of it. If you can find ways to increase your income, you’ll have more money to put towards savings. This could mean getting a better paying job, picking up side hustles, or finding creative ways to generate additional income.

Once you have a handle on your spending and income, you can start to put your money towards savings. One way to do this is to create a budget and make sure you are automatically transferring a fixed percentage of your income into savings each month. This will help you make headway on your long-term financial goals.

Another way to save money is to take advantage of discounts and deals. This could mean using coupons, shopping clearance items, or looking for sales. By being mindful of where you spend your money, you can save a significant amount over time.

Finally, one of the best ways to save money is simply to have a plan. If you know what you want to save for and have a timeline in mind, it will be much easier to stay on track.

In today’s economy, the costs of a variety of items and services are continuously rising. Money is becoming more difficult to earn. As a result, many individuals are looking for methods to save money. In my opinion, as a housewife, I believe saving money at home is one of the finest methods to save money. We can do it according to our monthly salary if we have a lot or little money.

There are a variety of methods to save money at home. One method is to reduce the number of times we eat out. Instead, we can cook more meals at home. This will not only save us money, but it will also be healthier for us as we will know exactly what ingredients are going into our food. Furthermore, another way to save money at home is by reducing the amount of energy we use.

We can do this by turning off lights when we leave a room and unplugging appliances that are not in use. Additionally, we can lower our thermostat in the winter and raise it in the summer to save on our energy bill. Finally, an easy way to save money that many people often overlook is by couponing. There are many websites and blogs dedicated to couponing which can provide us with coupons for a variety of items, ranging from food to clothes.

Saving money is important to everyone in today’s economy. By making small changes in our everyday lives, we can easily save money without noticing it. These changes will not only help us save money, but they will also help us become more financially stable in the long run.

To begin with, the standard of living is higher for those who have a high income. They utilize several appliances that might be costly for them, such as a television, refrigerator, and air conditioner…. Saving money on their energy bills is one of the finest ways to decrease their house expenses.

There are a few ideas to accomplish this, such as turning off lights when leaving a room, unplugging electronics when not using them, and utilizing natural light during the daytime. Homeowners can also save money by making their home more energy-efficient. This can be done by ensuring that doors and windows are properly sealed, adding insulation to the attic, and installing energy-efficient appliances… Another way to save money is by carpooling with friends or coworkers.

This will help to split the cost of gas, as well as wear and tear on the vehicle. Public transportation is also an option for those who do not have a car, or live close enough to their job or school. Additionally, eating out less often is a great method to save money.

Home-cooked meals are not only less expensive, but often healthier as well. Those who are looking to save money should also avoid impulsive purchases, and stick to a budget. Finally, one of the best ways to save money is by setting aside some cash each month into a savings account. This will help to build up a financial cushion in case of an emergency, or for future goals such as a down payment on a house or retirement.

They must spend a substantial amount of money each month on water, electricity, and gas bills. To lower monthly payments, they must reduce the amount of energy used at home. They should minimize the temperature in their refrigerator and air conditioner as much as possible. Don’t open fridge doors for longer than absolutely necessary. Use only the washing machine when there is a full load and set it to the warm or cold water setting rather than hot to wash economically in a clothes washer.

When taking showers, avoid letting the water run for a long time while shampooing or soaping up. Install low-flow showerheads to save water and energy. To lower heating costs in winter, wear sweaters and other warm clothing inside the house instead of turning up the thermostat. In addition, they should make sure their home is well insulated to minimize heat loss.

They can also save money by eating out less often. Instead of dining in restaurants, they can cook meals at home using budget-friendly ingredients. They can also save money on groceries by buying in bulk or taking advantage of sales and discounts. Another way to save money is to reduce entertainment expenses. Instead of going to the movies or out for drinks, they can stay in and watch TV or play board games.

What is money management.

Money management means taking care of your money. It’s like knowing how to use your pocket money wisely. You plan how to spend it, save some, and make sure you have enough for things you need.

Saving is putting money aside for later. Imagine you want a new toy or a book. If you save a little bit of your money every time you get some, soon you will have enough to buy what you want. It’s like filling a piggy bank; drop by drop, it gets full.

When you spend money, think about what you’re buying. Ask yourself if you really need it or if it’s just something you want because it looks cool. Sometimes, waiting before buying something helps you decide if it’s important.

A budget is a plan for your money. You write down how much money you get and then list the things you need to spend money on, like food, school supplies, and clothes. If you plan it right, you can also save some money.

Why It Matters

Handling money well is a big part of life. When you learn about it while you’re young, you get better at making good choices with money when you’re older. It means you won’t run out of money when you need it, and you can even help others. Plus, you’ll feel proud that you can take care of your money all by yourself.

500 Words Essay on Money Management

Creating a budget.

Think of a budget as a spending plan. It tells you how much money you have, where it needs to go, and what you can spend without running out. To make a budget, list all the money you get, like allowance or birthday cash. Then, write down what you need to spend money on, like school lunches or saving for a new bike. What’s left is your spending money. Remember, a good budget helps you not spend more than you have.

Saving is like planting a seed that grows into a money tree over time. When you save, you set money aside for later. You might save for a game, a trip, or just to have some extra cash when you need it. A good tip is to decide on a certain amount to save each time you get money. This way, saving becomes a regular habit, just like brushing your teeth.

Smart Spending

Understanding needs vs. wants.

Needs are things you must have to live, like food, a home, and clothes. Wants are extra things that are nice to have but you could live without, like toys and video games. Good money management means taking care of needs first and then seeing if there’s money left for wants.

Dealing with Emergencies

Emergencies are like unexpected storms that can shake up your money plans. It could be a broken bike or a lost school book. This is why you have savings. If you’ve saved up, you can handle these surprises without getting stressed.

Making Money Grow

Sharing and giving.

Money isn’t just for spending on ourselves. Sharing with others can make us feel good. You might give some money to help people in need or support a cause you care about. This is a part of money management, too, because it’s about deciding how to use your money to make a difference.

Managing money is a big responsibility, but it’s also a powerful skill. When you learn to manage your money well, you’re in control. You can reach your goals, handle emergencies, and even help others. Start practicing these money management tips, and you’ll be on your way to being a money management pro!

How to spend money to improve your life (lessons from the ultra rich)

Money doesn’t solve all your problems. But it solves your money problems. A single liquidity event or consistent payments from a business or investments can elevate your life as long as you make the right calls on how to spend the cash. You have options. It’s a good problem to have.

But unless you invest with intention and spend with scrutiny, money won’t change your life. You’ll just buy the expensive, flash stuff you feel like you should buy, and wonder why you don’t feel any happier. But that’s not the game.

When you have the money for multiple lifetimes but the time for just one, definite moves matter. Even if you’re not (yet) ultra rich, there are changes you can make right now. Spend money to improve your life and join the new rich. Here’s how to do it.

8 places to spend your money for freedom, health and happiness

Assemble your freedom team.

If you’re going to live the life of your dreams, you need people around you that can remove the friction. Dream big with this step. Think of everything you want to do and find the people who can make your life easy. Better yet, find one person. Employ a chief of staff who hires everyone else for you.

Think hiring people is extravagant? Consider this. Your effective hourly rate is astronomical. If you’re worth $1000 an hour but you do your own laundry, that’s $1000 every week you’re just throwing away. Now $50 doesn’t seem so bad. Don’t stop at laundry. For your maximum life pleasure, consider a driver, personal trainer, travel planner, security and assistants.

Have someone to clean your house, someone to source your outfits, and someone to check you in at hotels before you even arrive. Hire a chef to make every meal to the exact macros you need. Remove every part of life that doesn’t bring you joy and pay someone to make it go away. Keep going until every minute is magical.

Invest in your relationships

Few people are actually self-made, including you. Even if you did all the work yourself, everyone around you played a part in your success. Your parents raised you, your teachers shaped you, every friend gave support and guidance or showed you a good time. Now you’re earning well, repay the favour.

Paying for stuff can start small. Cover the bar tab, pay for the bill at a restaurant. Book nicer places to hang out and just sink the cost. It’s always worth it. People like being treated, and you’ll like treating them. Forget about any sense of who owes what and just have a good time.

As your earnings increase, consider how you can really spend money on the people who matter. I’m talking about college tuition, medical bills, holidays and experiences. Don’t let anyone around you worry about money. Make their costs go away and tell them you don’t expect anything back. Be someone’s angel like you know they’d be yours.

Ride your materialistic urges

It’s scientifically proven that extravagant material purchases won’t make you any happier. But you’ll want to test that theory for yourself. Try the cars, buy the gadgets, wear the suits. If any part of you wants them, scratch the itch and analyze after.

Dressing sharp could bring you the confidence to land your next big deal. Owning the best watch of everyone you know might turn out to be your jam. Your happiness might genuinely increase in proportion to the horsepower of your new wheels.

Having expensive taste is fine as long as you’ve got the money, and you won’t know unless you give it a go. Buy the things your teenage self always wanted. Buy the things you never thought you’d be able to afford. Keep those that end up adding to your life and donate those that didn’t live up to the hype.

Extend your impact

If you chased money and got it, only to be left feeling flat, it might not be your end goal. You could want purpose and impact. If that sounds right, use your money to scale yourself. Hire a content team and share what you know.

Turn your experience into videos and courses. Turn your frameworks and wisdom into social media posts, turn your ideas into books and empower other people to follow their dreams.

Hire videographers, scriptwriters, editors and producers. Have a PR or social media manager who runs your accounts on your behalf. Get a booking agent on retainer. Show up, talk openly, and see what resonates with the people. You’ll know pretty fast.

Donate generously

Philanthropy is the other way of extending your impact, and this one doesn’t have to involve going on camera. Rich people give shedloads of money away. When you have more than you need, find worthy causes.

Donate in waves, or set up a direct debit. Ask a local charity what they need and wire it over. Get in touch with all your old schools and write them each a check. It does good, it feels good. Don’t wait until you’re dead if you can afford to give right now.

You don’t have to donate to a charity or organization. Give money to strangers in need, cover the coffee order of the person behind you, and conduct random acts of kindness at every opportunity. Don’t keep score, just throw the good vibes out there and trust karma to do its thing.

Upgrade your castle

Your basecamp should be perfect, no excuses. Spend money on home improvements to remove all friction from your day-to-day. Make your main home somewhere you love to be, then repeat the process buying places around the world.

Get a new house or upgrade yours. Hire a home renovation project manager and tell them what you want. They assemble the team to organize the work, you make the key decisions and leave them to build your dreams.

Install a home gym, get a new pool, have a hot tub and sauna and every appliance you will ever need. Cinema room, landscaped gardens, film studio. Watch Cribs for inspiration of what you might want. Upgrade your castle to get more pleasure out of every day.

Expand your horizons

You didn’t earn a lot of money just to stare at the same four walls. To upgrade your life, expand your horizons. See more of the world. Get to better places in a better way. Upgrade your flight or fly private. With an ultra high net worth, you can buy a plane or start a timeshare. Skip lines, get treated well and have a more comfortable experience onboard so you turn up feeling fresh.

When you’re there, stay in better places. Ask for a higher floor, get lounge access, add all the extras. Sort price high to low on Airbnb. Get picked up from your door wherever you go and book the best version of every option. Better yet, get your assistant to book it for you.

Don’t stop at your own experience. Curate who you hang out with. Pay for your best friends to join you. Fly them out and cover the trip. See the world with your favourite people because that’s what money is for.

Elevate your experiences

Every experience can be elevated when you pay a little more. But doing more with your leisure time takes conscious spending. Without this, the shows don’t get booked, the trips don’t happen, and the fine dining is done by someone else.

Book your dream experiences but go all in. Don’t just attend the show, get front row seats and a meet and greet. Don’t just book the restaurant, get the chef’s table experience and cover your friends. Hire Taylor Swift to perform at your next party. Hire your idols to teach you what they know. Visit private islands, get a personal shopper for your next spree. Get the premium, organic version of whatever you eat.

The first class experience can be yours in everything you do. Most people put up with waiting, queuing, and doing what everyone else does, but that’s not how to get the most joy. Use your imagination to make things happen you didn’t know were possible.

How can you pay to improve your life? Conscious spending that buys you time and happiness

No matter how much money you have, one day you’ll die. That means time is your only finite resource. Use money to buy time. Use money to run experiments. Use money to upgrade your life and enjoy the fruits of your hard work.

Assemble your freedom team, invest in your relationships, and ride your materialistic urges until they stop happening. Extend your impact, donate generously, upgrade your castle, expand your horizons and see the world, then elevate your experiences by using your imagination.

Put your cash back into the economy for the good of yourself, your closest allies and the rest of the world. You’ve earned the right to do this.

7 simple hacks to save money on groceries

The rising price of groceries can be a huge burden on the monthly budget. From household staples like eggs, milk and lettuce to canned goods and just about everything in between, it feels easier than ever to rack up the bill at the grocery store if you’re not careful. Even though those price tags can be eye-popping, all hope is not lost when it comes to saving when you stock up. With the right budget-friendly tips, tricks and planning techniques, you can save a ton of money at the grocery store, make your shopping trips more efficient and cut down on food waste while you’re at it.

Watch the video above to learn how to save money on groceries.

How to save money on groceries

  • Live by the list. Take stock of what’s in your pantry before you head to the store, make a list of ingredients needed and when you get to the store, don’t deviate.
  • Shop your pantry and refrigerator before buying new items. Duplicate items in your pantry can not only kill your grocery budget, but can quickly lead to food waste.
  • Use your grocery store’s app to carefully plan your shopping trip from the comfort of your own home and check all available coupons. Utilizing your grocery store’s app is one of the best ways to stay on budget and save time when you shop.
  • As you add items to your cart in the app, you can see your working total which will help you carefully curate your cart to fit your budget before you shop in store.
  • It’s much easier to find sale items that pertain to exactly what’s on your grocery list when shopping in the grocery store’s app. This will help you avoid getting caught in sale traps when shopping in store.
  • Choose pantry staples like pasta and canned goods that not only last longer than easily perishable goods, but that are more versatile when it comes to planning your weekly menus.
  • When purchasing produce, choose produce that’s in-season. Out-of-season produce tends to be more expensive than its in-season counterparts.

31 Inexpensive Ways To Save Money In The Long Run

This is a "spend money to make money" kind of moment.

Danielle Healy

BuzzFeed Staff

1. Store fruits and veggies alongside a Bluapple freshness ball to extend their life by just existing in proximity to your produce, saving you money and unnecessary trips to the grocery store.

BluApple is a small business that was founded 2009 to help combat food waste. Just snag a refill kit and refresh your freshness ball with a new packet every three months.

Promising review: " These do seem to work, extending the life of my fruits and vegetable up to a week longer. Change the packet inside on schedule. I shake them occasionally and make sure that no produce is covering the top holes. I bought more for family/friends when I told them about it. No food is more expensive than that which you throw away (thanks, Mom)." — ttmadison

Get a two-pack from Amazon for $15.99 .

2. And, revamp your pantry with a set of airtight dry food containers to lock in freshness for all those grains, nuts, and baking provisions. You've let one too many boxes of cereal go stale — it's time to break the cycle.

a reviewer photo of the different sized containers filled with dry goods on a shelf

This set includes one tall container, four large, six medium, and four small containers.

Promising review: " Each lid locks on all four sides for a snug 'airtight' fit. Easy to clean and durable. The included labels and chalk pen make it easy to identify 'similar' items. Labels and matching containers give the pantry and laundry rooms much-needed organization and are Pinterest-worthy. I used the containers for all sorts of dry goods, such as coffee beans, flour, Bisquick, and Tide Pods. I definitely recommend these affordable containers in all sizes." — Jim of Dublin

Get it from Amazon for $23.98+ (available in three colors).

3. Spend less on your smile with this teeth-whitening pen , because traditional strips are tough to use, expensive, and can leave you with teeth sensitivity that is, in my professional opinion, NO fun. This pen costs a fraction of the price, can be used on the go, and the best part? NO lingering sensitivity.

a split image of a reviewer's teeth before and after using the whitening pen

Promising review:  "I love this! It’s very easy to use and works quickly! I drink coffee every morning and worry that my teeth aren’t as white as they should be. I had a job interview one day and worried about my teeth being yellow. Right before the interview, I pulled this out of my purse, quickly brushed it in my teeth, and left it on while I drove to my interview.  I rinsed my mouth, and I was amazed at the results! My teeth were nice and white...that quickly!  I felt much more confident during my interview! Thank you!" — S. Wiatrek

4. Replace wasteful lint rollers with a patented pet hair remover if Fido's hair is taking over every surface in your home. This roller uses bristles, not sticky tape, to catch lint, meaning you can clean and reuse it over and over and over again.

Because it doesn't rely on adhesive paper, you only have to buy it once and can use it forever — cleaning the hair off the brush when it gets clogged, of course!

Promising review: "Finally a lint roller that really works. Now I have an obsessed husband picking up German shepherd hair off the couch. Worth the price paid. It will pay for itself. No more sticky tape rollers!" — Blanca LInda Hatter

Get it from Amazon for $19.99+ (available in three colors).

5. Save stained surfaces with a TikTok-famous pink cleaning paste so you can finally tackle all those annoying scuffs and stains you thought only an expensive paint job could eliminate.

A reviewer's before photo which shows a white wall covered in crayon scribbles

It's made up of cleaning beads suspended in a gel, so it'll grind away at tough stains without damaging the surface beneath. It's suitable for use on most hard surfaces like ceramic tiles, barbecues, pots, pans, and more!

Promising review: "I used this product for my stove because it's one thing I dislike cleaning. I have used multiple degreaser sprays and they all are so toxic and don't work for me. The Magic Eraser was OK, but I used it several at a time and I had to scrub so hard. But this product, oh my goodness, is legit a miracle. It doesn't have any type of smell. I put the paste on a cloth, clean the area, then wipe it off with a damp cloth, and voilà, magic!" — May

Get it from Amazon for $5.29+ (available in two sizes).

6. Revive worn-out furniture with wood polish that conditions and protects wood with a combination of beeswax and orange oil, while hiding dings and scratches that were totally already like that when you got it.

Promising review: "This product is a MIRACLE! I can't believe how well it worked. Seriously unbelievable. One application and my coffee table looks great again. EASY to use, nothing special required. While I was watching TV, I used an old cloth/rag and spread it on. As easy as that. Nothing else worked on my abused coffee table, this stuff did. I HIGHLY recommend this product." — Carol L. Hill

Get it from Amazon for $9.98+ .

7. Cut down on energy costs and install a self-adhesive door draft stopper . Simply snip it to size and stick on any door to guard against drafts, noise, and under-door lights. Then just sit back, watch your electricity bill go down, and enjoy a little extra $$$ in your pocket.

Get it from Amazon for $7.99+ (available in four colors).

8. Embrace refillables with these  silicone travel bottles  that have a built-in labeling system because it's time to stop spending a small fortune on name-brand travel-sized products and just make your own. These are totally leak-proof and can be washed and reused again, and again, and again.

9. Ditch single-use paper towels for these Swedish dishcloths , an eco-friendly alternative that, unlike regular dishcloths, can be sanitized in the dishwasher or microwave between uses so you know they're not harboring any unwanted germs.

A hand wiping down a head of lettuce with a Swedish Dishcloth printed with lemons

Use these again and again and compost them when you're done since they're made of natural cellulose and cotton.

Promising review: "I originally picked these up to use in lieu of nasty, nasty dishrags that invoke my inner THIS IS NOT CLEAN demon. Since then, I have used them for everything from cleaning the kitchen to wiping up spills. After use, just toss in the wash and they are ready to go again. They are the perfect size and do an excellent job on every task to which I have applied them. They come in a variety of fun prints and I have yet to wear one out. Paper towel usage has taken a real nosedive, which is a good thing given its relative scarcity at present." — sandra simpson-kraft

Get a three-pack from Amazon for $11+ (available in 28 styles).

10. Never pay $5+ for bottled water again with a leakproof  nesting water bottle  that comes with a fun surprise! The stainless-steel bottle nests inside a travel cup, so you can score even more savings when you take advantage of those BYO cup discounts at your favorite coffee shop. There's even a surprise silicone coffee lid stowed inside the bottle cap. 🤯

a reviewer photo of a black water bottle

I am constantly trying to solve the problem of my near-constant desire for a beverage competing with my other desire to avoid single-use plastics. Recently, that has manifested in this purchase, which I've been really loving for over a year now. Both the bottle and cup are stainless steel, and can keep beverages either hot and cold for hours. All the pieces stow together really easily. I was skeptical how well the silicone coffee lid would work, since some reviewers complained that it slips off from time to time, but I've had zero issues. Though this unit is a tad heavier than my last water bottle, the fact that I now ALWAYS have a cup on me for an impromptu coffee run is well worth the negligible difference.

Get it from Amazon for $29.91+ (available in two sizes and in eight colors).

11. Make the switch from single-use pads and tampons to a reusable  menstrual cup for a one-and-done purchase you'll keep for years that won't fill up your trash or empty your wallet like other period products.

a BuzzFeed writer holding the menstrual cup

The menstrual cup factor that freaked me out the most was the thought of having to get up there and break the seal to take it out. So when I saw the Flex Cup, which is specifically designed to make that process easier, I figured why not give it a try. This is a purchase I would definitely file under the 'life-changing' category. Yes, there is a learning curve, but by my second cycle with the cup I felt like a pro. Even with the pull tab, taking it out can be a little messy (I tend to just do it in the shower), but it's definitely a more controlled experience than if it wasn't there at all. With my flow, I can leave my cup in for 12 straight hours without fear (can't say the same about tampons...), meaning The Flex Cup has made my period less awful. A true feat!

Promising review: "So very happy with my purchase!! Fits comfortably! Easy to insert and remove just takes some getting used to. Save money on pads and tampons! Very very very happy with this purchase." — Evie

Get it from Amazon for $29.99  (available in two sizes and as a starter bundle).

12. Treat your pup with a heck-durable duck chew toy your adorable-but-destructive good doggo can't shred to pieces just five minutes after receiving it. RIP to all the (expensive) toys that came before.

Promising review: "This is hands down the best toy I have ever bought for my dog. It doesn't come apart and my dog absolutely loves it! I've had it for over a month and it seems to be my pups favorite toy. Stop wasting your money and try this toy. It pays for itself 10x and your dog will love you for it!" — JG

They stick to the mop very securely, you don't have to worry about them coming off when cleaning, and when done you just toss them in the washer. I am so happy I started using these. They are saving me loads of money on those wet and dry refill sheets and saves the planet as well! " — Phoenix Hinton

Promising review:  "Great washable duster replacement tops. They vacuum off and wash up easily, and they grab dust and cobwebs every bit as well as the disposable ones I was using. Considering it means putting a bit less into landfills and also saving money in the long run; I only wish I had bought these years ago, sincerely. Also, they shipped very promptly and arrived sooner than expected, so that was a pleasant surprise. Thanks!" — otherlings

15. Save desecrated floors and furniture with a pet stain eliminator that'll pull off the ultimate magic trick — erasing new and old stains (and stank) on any surface with just a quick spritz and a rinse.

a reviewer photo of a tan couch with a dark stain on the seat and text reading "before"

Promising review: "We are an unofficial rescue home for dogs and cats. The latest dog came from Peru. She is an 8-year-old Chihuahua, and she was not house trained. So during the transition period from untrained to at least my being trained to understanding her sign language, we have had our share of accidents. We also had some leftover stains from previous dogs in spite of our efforts with other cleaners. New or old urine, this cleaner is phenomenal. The stains sometimes disappear right in front of you. I have to mark the spot I am cleaning so I know where to go back to in order to apply the clean rag or towel to absorb any residual liquid. Don't know how many products we have tried. This is the very first one that deserved a 5-star review. So I just ordered the gallon bottle and will put it on Subscribe & Save as well. I highly recommend it. Obviously." — Gkayemarie

Get it from Amazon for $19.31+ (available in two sizes and in two scents).

16. Make your own delectable drinks in this quart-size cold brew maker with an airtight seal that'll keep your coffee tasting so fresh, you won't even think about going to your favorite caffeine chain.

a reviewer photo of a hand holding a carafe of cold brew coffee

Just add coarse-ground coffee into the mesh filter, pour water into the pitcher, screw the lid on (with the filter attached and submerged in the water), let it brew for 12–24 hours, and serve. You can pour it straight over ice cubes, or cut it with water or milk. Read our Tayeka cold brew maker review !

Promising review: "I have some stomach issues and hot brewed coffee can make me feel queasy, or make my stomach hurt. The reduced acidity of using the cold brew makes a marked difference for me. The flavor is smoother and more flavorful." — Kimberly

Get it from Amazon for $19.30+ (available in two sizes and three colors).

17. Swap blotting papers for this volcanic stone face roller to soak up excess face oil even if you have makeup on! Unlike blotting papers, this roller is able to be washed and reused, reducing waste and saving you $$$.

Revlon oil-absorbing volcanic face roller

Promising review: "I first saw this online, and it looked like it worked very well in the video I watched. I use oil-blotting sheets a lot, but I thought if this roller ball worked, it would be way more convenient as it is reusable and washable. This does not move your makeup at all, and it literally makes your face look completely matte, soaking up all of the oil! Super easy to clean." — Courtney

18. Replace dryer sheets with these precious penguin dryer balls , because on top of their stunning good looks they can do everything a dryer sheet can (over and over again) AND reduce drying times, which is good news for your energy bill.

Promising review: "These dryer balls really are adorable and make the chore of laundry more cheerful. Be sure and follow the instructions to dry a load of dark clothes the first time you use the black penguin balls. After that, you will have no problem with using them to dry whites or light colors. Dryer balls really work and are a good investment. I am going to be giving these as gifts!" — Auntie m

19. Be your own car detailer with a headlight restoration kit if your high and low beams aren't shining as bright as they used to. This kit attaches to your standard electric drill, so you can get crystal clear headlights without the expensive trip to the repair shop.

Before: a car's cloudy, yellowed lens After: the same lens, now sharp and crystal-clear

Promising review: "I tried another kit once before about 1.5 years ago and got poor results. I was pleasantly surprised when this kit did the job so well! I used a cordless drill that was slightly faster than recommended at full speed. The instructions are easy to follow and I could tell the major difference at the final cleaning. I finished the job with Meguiar's coating and the lenses on my 2002 Honda CR-V are crystal clear again. This saved me about five to six times the money and I'm removing 'new lenses' from my wish list!" — Julymorning

I have had these for two years and they have held up great! Easily to fill, clean really nicely, and no complaints! And it's great you can put your own coffee in so you're not stuck to certain brands or flavors. Highly recommend if you are trying to be more environmentally friendly. " — Amazon Customer

21. Salvage your sugar with a terra-cotta sugar-saver that'll turn your hard-as-rock clump of brown sugar into a soft pile of ready-to-use sweetness (and keep it that way).

a reviewer photo of the sugar bear inside a container filled with hard clumps of brown sugar

Just soak it in water for 20 minutes and place it in your sugar to soften and maintain moisture for approximately three to six months.

Promising review: "I was nervous to try them in case they were a waste of money. Yesterday, I followed the directions, i.e. soaked them in water for 20 minutes, then plopped one each in containers of hard-as-concrete dark brown sugar and one of light brown sugar. I didn't dry them, just dropped them in on top. So today, I took the containers down and looked, and each container of formerly concrete-hard sugar was easy to measure out, no lumps, it's a miracle!" — NGS

The set comes with one spatula with a 6-inch handle and another with a 12-inch handle.

Promising review: "So worth it! I'm so happy with it. You will definitely save money using this. I think about how much I could have saved if this was invented 30 years ago. I mostly use it for small makeup jars. I tested the longer one on an 18-oz lotion, and it worked fine. BuzzFeed writer removing bright red lipstick with the makeup erasing cloth

I bought one of these cloths after including it in previous posts, subsequently selling myself on it (hazard of the job). It honestly works better than I imagined!  You really do just need to dampen it with water to have your makeup melting off in seconds.  I think this is a great zero-waste option for people (like me) who don't wear a ton of makeup on the day-to-day, because you can get a lot of uses from this cloth without needing to wash it constantly. It also washes up shockingly well. Every time I toss it in covered in makeup and it comes out almost entirely stain free, I'm shocked.

28. Say goodbye to expensive specialty cleaners and try this powerful all-purpose cleaner concentrate you can use to clean floors, clothes, cars, tubs, sinks — you name it! After her own son suffered an asthma attack after accidentally ingesting a so-called "natural cleaner," Ymani went to work creating her own highly effective, eco-friendly cleaners, which has grown into the business she has today.

With the exception of a few really specific cleaners (long live, the  stainless-steel solution ) this multipurpose makes up the majority of my cleaning arsenal. One bottle of concentrate lasts a shockingly long time (AKA — it's a steal).  It's my go-to spray for daily countertop spills, but can also be diluted to varying degrees and used on floors and walls for those deeper seasonal cleans.

29. Extend the life of your brushes with a  makeup brush cleaner  that's hypoallergenic, cruelty-free, and paraben-free for treating your tools to a sudsy shampoo wash that'll return them to their former glory (and color).

A reviewer holding a makeup brush that is brown with powder, then the same brush clean and white

Promising review: "I absolutely LOVE this brush shampoo! I was a little skeptical of how well it would clean my brushes since I'd never tried it before, but after using this I am very pleased with the outcome. It has a faint shampoo scent but nothing too overpowering, and suds like you wouldn't believe. It got all the way down to the base of the brush and gave it a really good cleaning. One of my brushes is made from boar hair (Estée Lauder powder brush) and I was worried it was going to frizz it out and ruin the shape, but it actually improved it after I had previously used baby shampoo. It's very soft and not at all coarse feeling. I also used this shampoo on my Beauty Blender , and it did a great job getting all the foundation out. All in all, I'd rate this product a 10/10!" — Katastrophe

Childhood Vaccines Aren’t Just Saving Lives. They’re Saving Money.

Over the past three decades, routine immunizations have prevented 1.1 million deaths and saved the United States $540 billion, the C.D.C. estimated.

By Teddy Rosenbluth

There’s no way to put a price on the pain and suffering prevented by childhood vaccines. But as it turns out, you can pinpoint the savings to the country.

For nearly three decades, childhood vaccines — including those that target measles, tetanus and diphtheria — have saved the United States $540 billion in health care costs, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Routine childhood vaccinations have prevented approximately 508 million cases of illness, 32 million hospitalizations and 1,129,000 deaths, the agency estimated on Thursday.

“These vaccine programs, when you create the right infrastructure to implement them, they pay for themselves right away,” said William Padula, a health economist at the University of Southern California who was not involved in the new research.

The savings estimate includes money that would have been spent on treating the initial infection and managing later, related conditions. The figure dwarfs the cost of developing the shots.

But vaccine-preventable illnesses can also cause indirect economic effects if children become permanently disabled from an infection, or parents miss work while caring for their sick children.

States consider new science-backed solution to save time and money on concrete infrastructure repair

American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials’ Committee on Materials and Pavements approves Purdue-invented method as a national standard for estimating concrete strength

  • Following seven years of research, approval of this Purdue-developed technique as a standard by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials is an initial step toward the method becoming an established practice.
  • Beta testing of the method is underway in 11 states and counting across the Midwest, South and West.
  • Widespread adoption of this method will depend on results from further testing by states, incorporation of the method as a standard into state specifications, and willingness of contractors to use it.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. —

A Purdue University invention that may shorten construction timelines and increase long-term durability of concrete highways, bridges and other transportation infrastructure is emerging as a viable alternative to methods that have been used for decades to estimate when newly poured concrete is mature enough to withstand heavy loads such as those from trucks and other vehicles.

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials’ Committee on Materials and Pavements (AASHTO COMP) has approved the Purdue-developed method as a new national standard. AASHTO membership is comprised of the departments of transportation (DOT) of all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The creation of  this standard , published Wednesday (July 31), puts the method on a path for states and contractors to consider looking into it as a new practice.

Embedded directly into fresh concrete, the Purdue invention uses sensor technology to provide engineers with relatively precise and consistent real-time data on concrete’s strength, which may be comparable or even surpass the accuracy of several current tools and methods.
