Arabic Language institute at King Saud University, Saudi Arabia, is proud to launch the Interactive Arabic Project. The Interactive Arabic is a pioneering online Arabic Language project which provides a very rich environment equipped with advanced technologies. The purpose of the project is to help nonnative speakers interested in learning Arabic by offering complete Arabic lessons to be available for free on the internet.

The Interactive Arabic can be accessed from any part of the world. All what learners need is to complete the online registration process and start learning immediately. Arabic language programs, either official or private, can benefit from the project by having their students enroll online. They just need to register with their emails along with a created password, and they would be able to enjoy the experience of learning Arabic language online easily.

The Interactive Arabic is a self-learning project. Learners, therefore, are required to have a prior knowledge of the pronunciation and the written form of Arabic Alphabets. This is the only prerequisite before they can benefit from such a project.

The Interactive Arabic project focuses on the Arabic language skills and elements. These include: vocabulary, structures, listening, speaking, reading and writing. In addition, the content demonstrates Arabic culture and some social aspects of everyday life. The aim is to help learners achieve basic communicative Arabic skills by exposing them to a communicative Arabic language.

The language used in the project is the contemporary Modern Standard Arabic. It is neither the old classic Arabic nor the colloquial ones, but the simple and clear Arabic, the language of education, press, and news TV stations such as Aljazeera, Al-Arabiya, and the like. In other words, a combination of using this project and watching these TV stations will more likely result in a better language competence.

The content of the Interactive Arabic project has been taken from the book: Arabic for the World , written by Hassan Alshamrani , and printed at King Saud University. The content has been modified to be appropriate to the environment of the computer and the internet. The process took about eight months with a considerable time and efforts to end up with such an interactive project.

The Interactive Arabic consists of twelve unites, including a variety of topics appropriate for beginners in Arabic. The topics cover various aspects of Arabic culture which are presented through situations involving daily life dialogues and conversations. These are the backbone of each unit in terms of common vocabulary and expressions, and grammatical structures.

Each unit includes seven lessons as follows:

Lesson One: Listening

(two to three conversations in the form of a video clip, which can be played, repeated, and paused by learners at their appropriate speed).

Lesson Two: Vocabulary

(a list of words and expressions appeared in the previous conversations. They are accompanied mostly by images illustrating the meaning, and followed by interactive vocabulary exercises).

Lesson Three: Grammatical Structures

(a summary of functional grammar appeared in the conversations, through using tables, colors, and different icons to help learners differentiate between masculine and feminine, and singular and plural ... etc. These are, then, followed by interactive structures exercises).

Lesson Four: Listening Comprehension

(short dialogues, followed by an exercise, including images where the learner chooses the right image that suites the dialogue. The learner can control and adjust the video to his appropriate speed. At the end of this lesson, the learner can follow a link to a supplementary material that contains the written dialogues and a sheet of the answer keys. The learner, accordingly, can listen, read, and review the answers at the same time).

Lesson Five: Speaking

(exercises containing examples of short dialogues and conversations, providing learners with some words or phrases to use in similar situations. This section also includes a chat room where learners can gather and talk about the topic of the unit or other related topics. Such conversations may be continued and carried on among learners throughout other internet programs since they share the same goal, communicating in Arabic).

Lesson Six: Reading

(this lesson varies from one unit to the other, starting with reading words and short phrases at the initial units to reading a short text at the following units. The short texts are accompanied by reading comprehension questions. This section also includes a reading model where the learner can listen to the text he has read and compare his reading to it).

Lesson Seven: Writing

(this section includes exercises such as: complete the words with the appropriate letters; to provide a practice on how some Arabic letters are written at the beginning, middle and end of the word. It also includes construction of sentences, rearrangement of words to become a sentence, and other writing exercises. This section also provides learners with a chat room to practice writing with their colleagues).

The project also includes three tests. Each test is designed to be done at the completion of each four units, where each test contains 100 questions automatically corrected. Thus the total is 300 questions, needless to mention the dozens of questions and exercises distributed throughout the units. The tests are as follows:

• Test yourself (units: one to four) • Test yourself (units: five to eight) • Test yourself (units: nine to twelve)

:Appendixes

The project also includes three supplementary materials as follows: • Listening comprehension (written and voice) and answers keys. • A summary of expressions and vocabulary of all units. • A summary of grammatical structures of all units,

:Facebook and Twitter

The Interactive Arabic project is available on Facebook and twitter where colleagues can meet and discuss. The following are the pages on both social networks.

In conclusion, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Dr. Saad bin Ali Alkahtani, Dean of the Arabic Language Institute, and Dr. Saad bin Mohammed al-Qahtani , head of Language and Culture Department at the Institute. They gave me the confidence and enthusiasm to create this work. Their encouragement and follow-ups are appreciated. I also thank the team who made an extraordinary effort during eight months to implement the interactive Arabic project, led by Engineer Mohamed Sabry , who worked hard and did a great job. I would like also to thank Dr. Esam Abdullah Alwagait, Dean of the Deanship of e-Transactions and Communications, and Dr. Waleed Alsalih, Vice-Dean of the Deanship of e-Transactions and Communications, and Engineer Hamad Nassir Alqahtani, the Director of Portal & e-Service Dept, and Engineer Abdullah Mohammed Aldebas, the Deputy Director of Portal &Service Dept, and Engineer Hammad Ullah, for their continuous cooperation to improve this project.

Kindly, do not hesitate to provide us with any comments or suggestions to improve the project. Please send your comments to the following email address: [email protected]

The course is fully audio-based, and the entire course involves spaced-repetition recall of phrases within specific cultural scenarios. This makes Pimsleur an excellent entry course for learning Arabic, but it will only familiarize you with the basics.

It's recommended to treat Pimsleur Arabic as a foundational course and then move on to something more comprehensive.

The course is structured around Pimsleur's spaced repetition algorithm, which has been proven to be extremely effective at training recall in Arabic.

The courses listed in this blog post offer a variety of learning experiences, from structured courses to one-on-one tutoring and gamified apps.

No matter your preference, there is an online Arabic course out there to help you achieve your language learning goals.

11. Talk In Arabic

Dialects: Egyptian, Levantine, Moroccan, Algerian, Gulf, Sudanese, and more.

Summary: Talk In Arabic is a unique platform that provides learners with authentic spoken Arabic practice in various dialects.

Originally started as a personal project to fill the dialect resource gap, it has become the largest and fastest-growing spoken Arabic dialect resource to date.

Talk In Arabic is not a traditional course, but rather a resource bank for independent learners, teachers, and students.

The platform offers a wide variety of lessons in 8 major dialects, ranging from the basics, such as "how to say hello in Tunisian Arabic," to advanced and specific topics, such as "getting your plumbing fixed in Jordanian Arabic."

The lessons are intentionally short and easy to digest, making it a great platform for busy language learners.

Also, for those who are passionate about both language learning and altruism, you will love this platform since most of the content is sourced directly from refugee teachers, providing their families with an income.

So not only will you be improving your Arabic skills, but you'll also be making a difference in someone's life.

  • Very affordable
  • New content added regularly
  • A wide variety of dialects are available
  • Focus on spoken Arabic in real-life contexts
  • Ever-expanding content added weekly by native speakers of various dialects
  • The only resource dedicated solely to spoken Arabic dialects and presenting 100% natural content in easily digestible formats
  • Variety of different formats to learn from, including podcasts, dialogues, vocab audio, and video
  • Content taught by or sourced from refugees, providing them with an income.
  • It’s not technically a “course” but rather a content provider for Arabic dialects.

Pricing: $12.95 per month or $95.40 per year or lifetime access for $197.

The Current Landscape of Arabic Programs in the Middle East

posted on: Aug 28, 2024

coursework in arabic

By Luke McMahan/ Arab America Contributing Writer

With the consistent failure of ceasefire talks to end the war in Gaza, American diplomatic voices sympathetic to Arabs are severely needed now and in the coming decades. However, a major tool for achieving this—knowledge of the Arabic language, particularly the specific dialect of the region in question—is becoming increasingly difficult for American students to acquire. Over the last twenty years, the landscape of American Arabic programs in the Middle East has significantly changed, marked by a decline in both students and available organizations.

I recently returned from a semester studying intensive Arabic in Amman, Jordan. My university has a robust undergraduate and postgraduate Arab studies program. Still, only three MENA countries are offered for study abroad: Amman in Jordan, several cities in Morocco, and Doha in Qatar. These locations provide three very different experiences in terms of language study. English is spoken quite widely in Doha, making it less immersive—an immersion that’s crucial for retaining Arabic, given its completely different structure compared to English.

Challenges with Regional Dialects

As for Morocco, the Darija dialect differs significantly from Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), which is almost exclusively taught in American schools, as well as from the dialects of the Levant and regions further east. Consequently, Moroccan Arabic programs featuring Darija essentially require American students with no background in colloquial Arabic to learn a new language. Furthermore, except for those planning to work or do business in Morocco, Darija is a far less practical dialect for most students. This leaves Jordan as the best option for American undergraduates: the dialects spoken there are much closer to MSA, allowing for an easier transition, and they are more widely understood outside of Jordan than Darija. The country also offers ample opportunities for linguistic immersion, especially compared to Doha.

Decline in Study Opportunities

Twenty years ago, prospective Arabic students had the opportunity to attend schools or programs in nearly every MENA country, with Egypt and Lebanon being the most popular due to their significant global cultural influence. However, following the Arab Spring, COVID-19, and other geopolitical issues, study opportunities in many countries—and with them, general participation in Arabic studies—have gradually begun to disappear. For example, the American University in Cairo (AUC) recently ended its partnership with the well-known and respected CASA program despite being the first university to host its students over 50 years ago.

Levant universities that previously hosted American Arabic study programs may still offer classes for American students, as AUC does. However, for one reason or another, connections with universities in the U.S. have faded. It is challenging to pinpoint the specific causes in each case beyond their association with broader geopolitical and cultural trends, as situations like the AUC case are not widely publicized. Consequently, students like myself, who are seeking study abroad opportunities within the constraints of their college credits, often find themselves choosing between Jordan, Morocco, and, to a lesser extent, some scattered programs in the Gulf.

The Importance of Immersive Programs

If the availability and diversity of Arabic program opportunities continue to decline, the potential for greater Arabic knowledge to foster improved cultural and political relations between Arab-speaking countries and the United States will also diminish. The most widely used MSA textbook for Arabic students, Al-Kitaab, published by Georgetown University, offers a robust grammatical lesson plan. However, Al-Kitaab does not provide a very diverse or practical vocabulary, nor does it sufficiently develop the speaking and comprehension skills necessary for living in the Middle East. This limitation is not a fault of the textbook; rather, experience in an Arab-speaking country is essential for students without an Arabic-speaking background to achieve language proficiency. This makes the aforementioned study abroad programs all the more crucial, as one cannot become fluent through a textbook alone.

The limited vocabulary taught in Al-Kitaab mostly falls within political and economic topics. This focus aligns with Georgetown University’s reputation for its international politics programs. Thus, the textbook is designed to prepare students for careers in government, where they would primarily use MSA to discuss foreign policy.

For the future of mutually beneficial U.S.-Arab relations, Arabic cannot be reduced to a tool solely for expressing American foreign interests. Without a broad range of immersive Arabic programs in the Middle East, American students miss out on a crucial step toward fluency, along with the opportunity to learn a regional dialect and the cultural insights that come with it.

What Is Arabic Calligraphy?

Arabic calligraphy is an art form that elevates the Arabic script into something visually stunning and culturally significant. Unlike everyday writing, Arabic calligraphy emphasizes the aesthetic presentation of words. The script’s fluidity and symmetry make it perfect for creating intricate designs that decorate everything from religious texts to modern art.

SEO-focused sentence : Arabic calligraphy is not just writing; it’s an art that captures the beauty of the Arabic language, celebrated across Islamic history and culture.

This art form typically utilizes two primary styles: Kufic and Naskh . Kufic, the older of the two, features strong, angular lines and is often used in architectural inscriptions. Naskh, known for its more fluid and rounded characters, is popular in both handwritten and printed texts.

For more in-depth information on these styles, you can refer to the Victoria and Albert Museum’s Guide on Islamic calligraphy.

The History of Arabic Calligraphy

Arabic calligraphy’s origins trace back to the 7th century, coinciding with the rise of Islam. As the need to transcribe the Qur’an grew, so did the development of this unique art form. Early Islamic scholars and artists focused on creating a script that was not only readable but also beautiful, which led to the creation of various styles of Arabic calligraphy.

During the Umayyad and Abbasid periods, Arabic calligraphy flourished, becoming a symbol of Islamic identity and cultural pride. This art form was used in manuscripts, architecture, coins, and textiles, spreading across the Islamic world as a revered craft.

For those interested in the historical context, The Met Museum’s Heilbrunn Timeline offers a detailed exploration of Islamic calligraphy’s evolution.

How to Practice Arabic Calligraphy

Learning Arabic calligraphy requires dedication and the right tools. Here’s how you can get started:

  • Gather Your Materials : Start with a reed pen (qalam) , ink, and high-quality paper. The qalam’s nib should be cut at an angle to create the thick and thin lines characteristic of Arabic calligraphy.
  • Master the Basic Strokes : Begin by practicing basic strokes. Each letter in Arabic calligraphy is made up of specific strokes, so mastering these is crucial to your success.
  • Explore Different Styles : Familiarize yourself with various styles like Kufic, Naskh, and Thuluth . Each style has its own rules and unique look, offering different ways to express the Arabic script.
  • Join a Class : Structured learning can significantly improve your skills. Our Arabic calligraphy classes are designed to take you from beginner to advanced levels with personalized guidance.
  • Practice Daily : Regular practice is essential. Dedicate time each day to practice writing letters, words, and eventually entire compositions.

For beginners, Art of Islamic Pattern provides a helpful resource on the history and practice of Arabic calligraphy.

Is Arabic Calligraphy Allowed in Islam?

Arabic calligraphy often features prominently in discussions about Islamic art, particularly regarding its permissibility. In Islam, the depiction of human and animal forms is generally avoided to prevent idolatry. However, Arabic calligraphy is seen as a noble art form, especially when it involves writing verses from the Qur’an or other religious texts.

SEO-focused sentence : Arabic calligraphy is not only allowed in Islam, but it’s also considered a sacred and respected practice when used for religious purposes.

Islamic scholars agree that Arabic calligraphy, when used in a manner that respects Islamic principles, is entirely permissible. It serves as a way to honor the beauty of the Arabic language and the words of the Qur’an, making it a spiritually significant art form.
