1. Handprint Flag

Get your paints out, it’s time to express patriotism through art! No need for brushes, as we will use our hands to paint the Indian tricolour flag. You will need the right shades of orange, green and blue paint. Take a white chart paper and divide it into three sections with a lightly drawn line. Paint your palms orange and press your palm prints on the top section of the paper. Repeat the same on the bottom section with green paint. To create the Ashok Chakra, paint your palms blue and place your palm impressions by going around like the hands of a clock. Erase the pencil lines and your beautiful chart is ready for display!       

2. Tricolour Recipe

Let’s get creative and patriotic in the kitchen! This activity is great fun for children of all ages. Younger kids can arrange salads or fruits in the design of the tricolour. Older kids can try their hands at frosting a cake with three colours. And, children ready to try some more elaborate recipes can try a rice arrangement with portions of Schezwan rice, plain rice and coriander rice, or a pasta serving with a tomato-based sauce, cheesy sauce and pesto sauce to get the all the three colours on a single serving dish. 4. Dumb Charades with Patriotic Movies  

Independence Day is a holiday for the entire family! How about getting together to do play some fun games like Dumb Charades! Each member of the family has to act out the name of a movie while the others try to guess.    

5. DIY Tricolour Badge   

Prepare a badge that you can pin up on your shirt to show your love and pride for India. You will need a card paper cut into a small circle for the base of your badge. Cut out small strips of orange, green and white ribbon. Fold the ribbons in half. Paste the orange ribbons along the edge of the circle. Now, leave some gap and start pasting the white ribbon a little below the orange. In the innermost circle, paste the green ribbons. In the space left in the centre, write down your name. The Indian National Congress in its initial shape in the first three annual sessions praised the British government and only prayed for reforms. It was only in 1907 for the first time that Bal Gangadhar Tilak raised his voice against British domination and everything Western and it was Tilak who for the first time gave the proud slogan ‘Freedom is our birthright and I shall have it’. Lala Lajpat Rai and Bipin Chandra Pal this trio of Bal, Lai, and Pal preached with vehemence to break away from the British shackles.

Lala Lajpat Rai exhorted his countrymen in words as ‘Indians should no longer be content to be beggars whining for favors; for, if they cared for their country they would have to strike a blow for themselves. Bipin Chandra Pal an outstanding Journalist of Bengal wrote in papers like ‘New India’ and ‘Bandematram’ which writings worked like a rousing current on the minds of the young people.

Certain internal and external factors also worked to arouse the national consciousness and national pride among the people, particularly certain impolite and autocratic steps taken by the Viceroy Lord Curzon. De Mello a writer of repute rightly wrote ‘Perhaps no single British administrator in India gave a greater impetus to the national movement than Lord Curzon with his ill-disguised contempt for the Indian National Congress’.

In the meantime there rose up a band of extremists like Chandra Shekhar Azad, Sardar Bhagat Singh, Ashfaqullah, and some others who believed in the extreme way of the bomb with which movement the moderates did not agree. The extremists, though failed in their activities, still helped in arousing the sentiments of the masses. The Jalianawala massacre in 1919 added fuel to the fire.

By this time Lai, Bal and Pal had left the scene and Mahatma Gandhi had taken up the leadership. His non-cooperation movement against the British government in 1920, his ‘Dandi March’ The Salt Satyagrah and thereafter many more movements carried on the freedom movement still further. The British government failed to satisfy the aspirations for full independence of the country but in spite of making efforts of some settlement, Gandhi turned from the path of cooperation and moderation to complete non-cooperation with the British Government. All efforts have failed Gandhi, was led to make the historic announcement of ‘Quit India’ movement in 1942 and gave the call for ‘Do or die’.

In 1825, Thomas Jefferson reflected on the meaning and principles of the Declaration of Independence. In a letter to a friend, Jefferson explained that the document was an “expression of the American mind.” He meant that it reflected the common sentiments shared by American colonists during the resistance against British taxes in the 1760s and 1770s The Road to Independence

After the conclusion of the French and Indian War, the British sought to increase taxes on their American colonies and passed the Stamp Act (1765) and Townshend Acts (1767). American colonists viewed the acts as British oppression that violated their traditional rights as English subjects as well as their inalienable natural rights. The colonists mostly complained of “taxation without representation,” meaning that Parliament taxed them without their consent. During this period, most colonists simply wanted to restore their rights and liberties within the British Empire. They wanted reconciliation, not independence. But they were also developing an American identity as a distinctive people, which added to the anger over their lack of representation in Parliament and self-government.

After the Boston Tea Party (1773), Parliament passed the Coercive Acts (1774), punishing Massachusetts by closing Boston Harbor and stripping away the right to self-government. As a result, the Continental Congress met in 1774 to consider a unified colonial response. The Congress issued a declaration of rights stating, “That they are entitled to life, liberty, & property, and they have never ceded [given] to any sovereign power whatever, a right to dispose of either without their consent.” Military clashes with British forces at Lexington, Concord, and Bunker Hill in Massachusetts showed that American colonists were willing to resort to force to vindicate their claim to their rights and liberties.

In January 1776, Thomas Paine wrote the best-selling pamphlet Common Sense which was a forceful expression of the growing desire of many colonists for independence. Paine wrote that a republican government that followed the rule of law would protect liberties better than a monarchy. The rule of law means that government and citizens all abide by the same laws regardless of political power.

The Second Continental Congress debated the question of independence that spring. On May 10, it adopted a resolution that seemed to support independence. It called on colonial assemblies and popular conventions to “adopt such government as shall, in the opinion of the representatives of the people, best conduce [lead] to the happiness and safety of their constituents in particular and America in general.”

Five days later, John Adams added his own even more radical preamble calling for independence: “It is necessary that the exercise of every kind of authority under the said Crown should be totally suppressed [brought to an end].” This bold declaration was essentially a break from the British.

“Free and Independent States”

On June 7, Richard Henry Lee rose in Congress and offered a formal resolution for independence: “That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved [set free] from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.” Congress appointed a committee to draft a Declaration of Independence, while states wrote constitutions and declarations of rights with similar republican and natural rights principles.

On June 12, for example, the Virginia Convention issued the Virginia Declaration of Rights , a document drafted in 1776 to proclaim the natural rights that all people are entitled to. The document was based upon the ideas of Enlightenment thinker John Locke about natural rights and republican government. It read: “That all men are by nature equally free and independent and have certain inherent rights … they cannot by any compact, deprive or divest [take away] their posterity [future generations]; namely, the enjoyment of life and liberty, with the means of acquiring and possessing property, and pursuing and obtaining happiness and safety.”

The Continental Congress’s drafting committee selected Thomas Jefferson to draft the Declaration of Independence because he was well-known for his writing ability. He knew the ideas of John Locke well and had a copy of the Virginia Declaration of Rights when he wrote the Declaration. Benjamin Franklin and John Adams were also members of the committee and edited the document before sending it to Congress.

Still, the desire for independence was not unanimous. John Dickinson and others still wished for reconciliation. On July 1, Dickinson and Adams and their respective allies debated whether America should declare independence. The next day, Congress voted for independence by passing Lee’s resolution. Over the next two days, Congress made several edits to the document, making it a collective effort of the Congress. It adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4. The document expressed the natural rights principles of the independent American republic.

The Declaration opened by stating that the Americans were explaining the causes for separating from Great Britain and becoming an independent nation. It stated that they were entitled to the rights of the “Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God.”

The Declaration then asserted its universal ideals, which were closely related to the ideas of John Locke. It claimed that all human beings were created equal as a self-evident truth. They were equally “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” So whatever inequality that might exist in society (such as wealth, power, or status) does not justify one person or group getting more natural rights than anyone else. One way in which humans are equal is in possession of certain natural rights.

The equality of human beings also meant that they were equal in giving consent to their representatives to govern under a republican form of government. All authority flowed from the sovereign people equally. The purpose of that government was to protect the rights of the people. “That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.” The people had the right to overthrow a government that violated their rights in a long series of abuses.

The Declaration claimed the reign of King George III had been a “history of repeated injuries and usurpations ” [illegal taking] of the colonists’ rights. The king exercised political tyranny against the American colonies. For example, he taxed them without their consent and dissolved [closed down] colonial legislatures and charters. Acts of economic tyranny included cutting off colonial trade. The colonists were denied equal justice when they lost their traditional right to a trial by jury in special courts. Acts of military tyranny included quartering , or forcing citizens to house, troops without consent; keeping standing armies in the colonies; waging war against the colonists; and hiring mercenaries , or paid foreign soldiers, to fight them. August 15, 1947 , was the date when India gained its independence. After a battle, we managed to free ourselves from the British Raj. Independence Day , in the United States , the annual celebration of nationhood. It commemorates the passage of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776.

The Congress had voted in favour of independence from Great Britain on July 2 but did not actually complete the process of revising the Declaration of Independence, originally drafted by Thomas Jefferson in consultation with fellow committee members John Adams , Benjamin Franklin , Roger Sherman , and William Livingston , until two days later. The celebration was initially modeled on that of the king’s birthday, which had been marked annually by bell ringing, bonfires, solemn processions, and oratory . Such festivals had long played a significant role in the Anglo-American political tradition. Especially in the 17th and 18th centuries, when dynastic and religious controversies racked the British Empire (and much of the rest of Europe), the choice of which anniversaries of historic events were celebrated and which were lamented had clear political meanings. The ritual of toasting the king and other patriot-heroes—or of criticizing them—became an informal kind of political speech, further formalized in mid-18th century when the toasts given at taverns and banquets began to be reprinted in newspapers.

In the early stages of the revolutionary movement in the colonies during the 1760s and early ’70s, patriots used such celebrations to proclaim their resistance to Parliament’s legislation while lauding King George III as the real defender of English liberties. However, the marking of the first days of independence during the summer of 1776 actually took the form in many towns of a mock funeral for the king, whose “death” symbolized the end of monarchy and tyranny and the rebirth of liberty.

During the early years of the republic, Independence Day was commemorated with parades , oratory, and toasting in ceremonies that celebrated the existence of the new nation. With the rise of informal political parties, they provided venues for leaders and constituents to tie local and national contests to independence and the issues facing the national polity. Perhaps for this reason, Independence Day became the model for a series of (often short-lived) celebrations that sometimes contained more explicit political resonance , such as George Washington’s birthday and the anniversary of Jefferson’s inauguration while he served as president (1801–09).

The bombastic torrent of words that characterized Independence Day during the 19th century made it both a serious occasion and one sometimes open to ridicule—like the increasingly popular and democratic political process itself in that period. With the growth and diversification of American society, the Fourth of July commemoration became a patriotic tradition which many groups—not just political parties—sought to claim. Abolitionists , women’s rights advocates, the temperance movement , and opponents of immigration (nativists) all seized the day and its observance, in the process often declaring that they could not celebrate with the entire community while an un-American perversion of their rights prevailed.

With the rise of leisure , the Fourth of July emerged as a major midsummer holiday . The prevalence of heavy drinking and the many injuries caused by setting off fireworks prompted reformers of the late 19th and the early 20th century to mount a Safe and Sane Fourth of July movement. During the later 20th century, although it remained a national holiday marked by parades, concerts of patriotic music , and fireworks displays, Independence Day declined in importance as a venue for politics. It remains a potent symbol of national power and of specifically American qualities—even the freedom to stay at home and barbecue .

East Timor Marks 25 Years of Independence

Timor-Leste, or East Timor, is marking the 25th anniversary of its vote to become independent from Indonesia. East Timor had been under Indonesian occupation since 1975. Indonesia killed more than a third of the population, over 200,000 Timorese. After the 1999 independence vote, the Indonesian military and pro-Jakarta militias began attacking civilians, killing an estimated additional 1,500 people and burning parts of East Timor to the ground. Timor-Leste Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão, who had been imprisoned for years by Indonesia, and President José Ramos-Horta, leaders of East Timor’s independence movement, are addressing the nation today.

U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres is in East Timor for the occasion. Guterres was the prime minister of Portugal at the time of the 1999 vote and a vocal supporter of East Timorese independence. East Timor was occupied by Portugal before Indonesia invaded. Earlier this week, Guterres spoke from the capital Dili, where he addressed the climate crisis.

Secretary-General António Guterres : “Throughout the Pacific, climate chaos is affecting those who did the least to cause it. And this is the time to act against climate change and to reinforce measures to protect the Timorese people in the face of the intensification of climate disasters. But Timor-Leste cannot be alone in this effort. The international community has an obligation to support them, namely through an ambitious result at COP29 this year in terms of financial support.”
