This unique text is a collaborative publication containing preK-12 student case studies by a diverse team of authors in deaf education. Anyone who has taught pre-service teachers or clinicians recognizes the difficulty of teaching the complexities of the topic of diversity among students who are deaf/hard of hearing. Supporting the perspective of The Radical Middle, the text employs and addresses the use of collaborative terminology that respects the differences of readers and each of the authors. The text’s content is presented without promoting a single philosophy or methodology for teaching and working with students who are deaf/hard of hearing. The authors have done well to present case studies that simply articulate the unique characteristics and issues surrounding each student without integrating professional bias as to how to address the issues outlined. Readers are permitted to address each element of a case study from the perspective of their own professional training and experience.
The objective of the text, to provide readers a representative sample of the U.S. student population who is deaf/hard of hearing, is clearly demonstrated through the authors’ inclusion of 35 highly resourceful individual preK-12 student case studies. The authentic case studies provide teacher trainers a useful resource to explore issues of diversity that occur within educational settings for students who are deaf/hard of hearing. The authors also include the perspective that the case studies will allow professionals within the field to collaborate on solving issues and anticipate opportunities associated with providing services to a diverse deaf student population. The authors have also included a comprehensive list of essential terms for those who may not be fluent in all aspects of educating students who are deaf/hard of hearing.
The individual case studies offer prospective professionals the opportunity to examine a comprehensive look at each student, as well as address important factors impacting providing services to students who are deaf/hard of hearing. Successful educators must be able to address how diversity impacts accommodations and modifications for students, and how being from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds influences learning ( Leigh & Crowe, 2015 ). Key topics noted within each study are listed and the studies include various supporting documents such as audiograms, sign language checklists, and portions of Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs). Each case study attempts to address information regarding topics not limited to communication issues, learning experiences, educational services, and learning environments. In addition to the documents supporting each case study, are discussion questions and activities which afford university faculty the opportunity to explore specific issues within each study and provide trainees the real-world engagement with issues, materials, and preK-12 students with whom the trainees can relate. The inclusion of the questions and scenarios allows teacher trainers to create meaningful inquiry-based learning experiences that have been shown to improve teacher performance ( Bilgin, Karakuyu, & Ay, 2015 ).
Future professionals planning to work with students who are deaf/hard of hearing should have the ability to create a realistic perspective of what it means to work with such students. Those planning to work within deaf education should have experience with collaborative, research-based, practical applications in case-based learning opportunities to be successful school personnel ( Robinson, 2017 ; Harman et al., 2015 ). Case studies in Deaf Education allow pre-professionals to do just that. All these features make for a highly useful text, adaptable to several educational and clinical instructional opportunities.

This comprehensive resource for educators and professionals who work with d/Deaf and hard of hearing students fully reflects the diversity of these learners with case studies and evidence-based practices.
Description
Case Studies in Deaf Education provides comprehensive materials that will prepare prospective teachers to work with the diverse spectrum of students who are d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/Dhh) and empower them to better understand these complex and unique learners. The text presents an extensive series of case studies that are balanced and unbiased in both language and instructional approaches and that encourage readers to use background details, academic data, and evidence-based practices to make informed educational decisions.
The authors address the diversity of d/Dhh students by examining a multitude of learner characteristics that influence communication and educational services. These characteristics and their interactions include a student’s background experiences, language and communication mode (sign and/or listening and spoken language), language and academic proficiency levels, use of assistive hearing devices (hearing aids or cochlear implants), and family dynamics. The case studies are supported with authentic supplemental materials, such as audiograms and Individualized Educational Plans, and are accompanied by discussion questions, activities, resource lists, and a glossary of essential terms. Case Studies in Deaf Education will help teachers and allied professionals develop the knowledge and skills to use a collaborative, problem-solving process that leads to the provision of quality, effective services for students who are d/Dhh.
The accompanying Instructor’s Manual contains key information for each case study and provides PowerPoint slides that can be displayed during in-class or online discussions. Find it at the GU Press website as a downloadable file.
