How can I use these worksheets in my classroom?
As an educator, there are several ways you can use these worksheets in your classroom:
1. Practice Material: After teaching a specific concept, such as single-digit addition or place value, you can use these worksheets as practice material to reinforce what students have been taught in class.
2. Assessments: You can use these worksheets to assess students' understanding of the topics you've taught. The variety of exercises, including word problems and numeric problems, can help gauge students' grasp of the material.
3. Homework Assignments: These worksheets can be assigned as homework to give students additional practice outside of the classroom. They can help fill in the gap from regular workbooks.
4. Centers or Stations: In a classroom that uses a centers or stations approach, these worksheets could be used at a math center where students rotate through different activities.
5. Early Finisher Activity: For students who finish their work early, these worksheets can provide an additional challenge and keep them engaged.
6. Group Work: Some worksheets could be used for pair or small group work, promoting collaborative problem-solving skills.
Remember, it's important to go through the worksheets with the students after they've completed them, or provide them with the answer keys, to ensure they understand any mistakes they might have made.
What math skills should I teach my first grade class?
The skills you teach your first graders will depend on your curriculum and their individual learning needs.
Generally, students should learn basic arithmetic operations within 20, understand numbers up to 120, tell time using both analog and digital clocks, interpret simple data, and understand basic geometric concepts including shape attributes and partitioning.
If you’re following the Common Core curriculum , you will want to cover the following standards:
Operations and Algebraic Thinking:
- Using basic addition and subtraction within 20 to solve a variety of word problems, including those involving putting together or taking apart numbers, comparisons, and unknowns in all positions. This can be achieved using visual aids like objects and drawings, or equations with symbols for unknown numbers.
- Solving word-based math problems involving the addition of three whole numbers whose total is less than or equal to 20.
- Applying properties of operations as strategies for addition and subtraction.
- Understanding subtraction as a problem of finding an unknown addend.
- Relating the process of counting to the concepts of addition and subtraction.
- Adding and subtracting numbers within 20 fluently, and applying strategies such as counting on, making ten, decomposing numbers, using the relationship between addition and subtraction, and creating equivalent but easier or known sums for ease of calculation.
- Understanding the meaning of the equal sign and being able to determine if addition and subtraction equations are true or false.
- Determining the unknown whole number in equations involving the addition or subtraction of three whole numbers.
Number and Operations in Base Ten:
- Counting up to 120, starting from any number less than 120. This also involves reading and writing numerals within this range and representing a number of objects with a written numeral.
- Understanding that a two-digit number is composed of tens and ones.
- Comparing two two-digit numbers based on the meaning of the tens and ones digits. This involves using the symbols '>', '=', and '<' to record the results of comparisons.
- Adding within 100, including adding a two-digit number to a one-digit number, and a two-digit number to a multiple of 10. This involves using concrete models or drawings, strategies based on place value, and properties of operations. Students are also expected to relate their strategies to a written method and explain their reasoning. It includes understanding that when adding two-digit numbers, one adds tens to tens and ones to ones, and occasionally it may be necessary to compose a ten.
- Given a two-digit number, mentally finding 10 more or 10 less than the number without having to count, and being able to explain the reasoning behind it.
- Subtracting multiples of 10 (ranging from 10 to 90) from other multiples of 10 in the same range. This is done using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value and operations. Students should relate their strategy to a written method and explain their reasoning used.
Measurement & Data:
- Telling and writing time in hours and half-hours using both analog and digital clocks.
- Organizing, representing, and interpreting data with up to three categories. This involves asking and answering questions about the total number of data points, the number of data points in each category, and comparing the number of data points between different categories.
- Distinguishing between defining attributes (like triangles being closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (such as color, orientation, or size). This includes building and drawing shapes with defining attributes.
- Partitioning circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares and describing these shares using terms like halves, fourths, and quarters. Also, understanding that decomposing a shape into more equal shares results in smaller shares. This includes the ability to describe the whole shape as two or four of these shares.

First Grade Homework For the Entire Year
susanjones June 17, 2016 4 Comments
This post may contain affiliate ads at no cost to you. See my disclosures for more information.
I have one template per month and then change the date and wording each week!
Behind the weekly newsletter I send home different homework pages based on all sorts of factors. I like having options!!!! I made at least one page for each topic I teach throughout the year. Also, I have never been a fan of longgggg homework. I find that it is too overwhelming and I think students just need *quick* reinforcing practice each night so that played a big role in the way I set up my homework. You can see a little more about the homework pages below.
Again, I like having options and I know most teachers do too! Based on the skills I’m teaching that week, a student’s ability level, parent involvement, I will send home what I believe to be a reasonable HW packet for the week. You can do the same for your students!
^^ Again, it’s all up to YOU!^^
Maybe you don’t send home homework because in your community it doesn’t get sent back. Well, these quick check-ins can easily be made into morning work that only takes minutes to complete while students practice their skills.
If you think this type of first grade homework might be for you or you want to try and switch it up this year, go ahead and take a closer look at some of the pages in my unit by clicking the unit below and downloading the preview!
Let me know what you think!
Here are some closeups of a few pages (more to be seen in the preview!):

How to Use the First Day of Class to Set Up a Positive and Engaging Course
- August 21, 2024
- Teaching and Learning Resources
By Jane Harvey
Why the first day class of a course is so important
As with many other life experiences, first-day-class impressions are important as they set the tone for the rest of the semester. Students’ first impressions of the course, the instructor, the atmosphere and community will affect the effort they put into the course as well as their relationships with the instructor and their peers. What the first day includes can help build the kind of collaborative community everyone wants, enhance students’ engagement and motivation, and show the students that you care about them and are a empathetic and effective instructor.
Getting to know each other
Why is it important that....
you get to know students? Learning students’ names can be challenging, especially in large classes. It is worthwhile to try because of the community that comes from getting to know your students. Showing students that you are trying to learn their preferred name and its pronunciation and using their names as often as you can shows them that you are focused on them as individuals. Even if you may not remember and occasionally mispronounce students’ names, there is value in trying. Also, you might learn about them as individuals by asking them to fill out a questionnaire about themselves can help you perhaps personalize and vary your examples etc. to be based on students’ backgrounds, hobbies, interests, etc. This pdf has a questionnaire that you can use or adapt and also other suggestions for the following ideas.
students get to know each other? Students getting to know each other and learn and use each other’s names on the first day is crucial to the creation of an engaging classroom community. Also, fostering collaboration among students, for example by setting up groups and having them complete a task similar to what they will do during the course, can help reduce the stress students tend to feel on the first day of class as well as create foundations for a collaborative and cooperative classroom community.
students get to know you? Humanize yourself on day one by, for example, sharing information about yourself and what you expect from your students. This effort can set up a positive relationship which can help both you and the students during the semester. Depending on your class structure, you might share how you plan to be flexible with students. This flexibility could look like allowing students to submit one assignment late without a penalty or allowing students to miss a class or two without questioning. Also, you might show empathy to students' challenges by communicating how the course is designed to support them, and what resources USF has for student support.
Create curiosity and motivation about the content and goals of the course
The first day is the best time to spark students’ curiosity and motivation for the rest of the course. Setting a task which requires knowledge and skills that students could only have by the end of the semester will allow students to draw on their existing knowledge and create fertile grounds for new knowledge and skill acquisition.
Then you can outline how the course content, activities, and assignments will allow students to acquire this knowledge and develop the skills they will need. These connections can be made by reviewing the assignments and showing how each assignment meets a Student Learning Outcome. Providing this context can help students engage with the course and also decrease their stress.
Also, you might ask students to think about what learning strategies they will need to complete the course successfully, and what they would need from you and from each other to make those strategies successful. Attending office hours or creating study groups could be suggested strategies.
Having students take two minutes at the end of the class to write their (anonymous) reactions to their first day can build a climate where they are responsible for thinking about their learning. It will also give you feedback and can positively influence your teaching and relationships with the students.

History of Altai Krai
The upper Ob and Altai foothills were inhabited by Russians since the second half of the 17th century. The region’s development began after two fortresses were built to protect against nomads - Bikatunskaya (1709) and Beloyarskaya (1717) fortresses.
The Great Northern War against Sweden (1700-1721) caused a number of problems in Russia, one of which - getting own metals and especially copper, necessary for making guns, coinage, casting bells. Before the war, Russia imported copper from Sweden, but now Peter I had to turn to its own natural resources. Several expeditions were sent to Altai for geological exploration.
In 1729, the first Altai metallurgical plant, Kolyvan-Voskresensky plant, was opened. Altai land was also rich in silver. The mining industry based on serf labor of peasants was formed in Altai. In the 1730s, Barnaul was founded, it was a settlement near the silver-plant that belonged to Akinfy Demidov.
More Historical Facts…
In the second half of the 18th century, the Altai mining district included the present Altai krai, Novosibirsk and Kemerovo parts of Tomsk and East Kazakhstan regions with total area of over 500,000 sq. km. and a population of over 130,000 people.
In the first half of the 19th century, Altai took first place in Russia for the production of silver, the second - copper, the third - gold. This region became the second largest industrial area in the east of the country after the Urals. In 1861, after the abolition of serfdom, the mining industry entered a period of crisis.
Gradually, agriculture was becoming the backbone of the local economy. Various crops (wheat, oats, rye) were grown as well as potatoes, beekeeping began developing. At the end of the 19th century, the Siberian railway passed through the north of the region. In 1915, the Altai railway was constructed connecting Novonikolayevsk, Barnaul and Semipalatinsk.
Stolypin’s land reform promoted migration to Altai that contributed to the economic growth of the region. In the early 20th century, Altai became known for its dairy products. Altai butter was exported to the countries of Western Europe. In July, 1917, the Altai gubernia was founded with the center in Barnaul. By the end of the 1930s, it developed into one of the largest agri-industrial regions of Siberia.
During the Second World War, more than 100 plants were evacuated from the western regions of the USSR to the Altai region. By the early 1960s, Altai krai produced more than 80% of tractor plows and more than 30% of freight wagons and steam boilers in RSFSR.
In the 1950s-1960s, development of virgin lands began in the western steppe part of the region, 2.9 million hectares were plowed. About 350,000 people from different regions of the USSR came to the Altai region to participate in these large-scale works.
After the collapse of the USSR, the local economy was in crisis caused by lack of state orders for industrial enterprises and unprofitable agriculture. Until 1991, Altai Krai included Gorno Altai autonomous oblast. Today, it is a separate region of Russia - Altai Republic.

Existing template documentation At Wikimedia Commons, it is recommended to use {{TemplateBox}} with either useTemplateData=1 or useTemplateData=only on the /doc subpage and transcluding it with {{Documentation}} into the template. < nowiki > -tags can be wrapped around the arguments, if required, to avoid templates being expanded.
Newly created template documentation and imports Another option, especially for imported templates, or for users with JSON experience, is placing raw < templatedata > -tags into the Wikitext of the template, as described in various Wikipediae.
Discussion There is an ongoing discussion about that matter. Feel invited to comment if you are experienced in either way, your time permits and if you like to share your opinion or to make a suggestion.

Qantas mistakenly sells first-class flights at a massive discount
- Qantas has blamed a coding error for drastically reduced first-class fares.
- About 300 travelers bought tickets with discounts of up to 85% off.
- Qantas said it's rebooking affected customers in business class or offering full refunds.
The Australian airline Qantas has blamed a coding error for vastly reduced pricing on hundreds of first-class flights sold last week.
About 300 travelers nabbed the tickets, priced at discounts of up to 85% on the usual fare rate for flights between Australia and the US.
A first-class journey between Sydney and New York costs about 15,000 Australian dollars, or about $10,000.
"Unfortunately, this is a case where the fare was actually too good to be true," a spokesperson told Business Insider in a statement on Monday.
Qantas' terms and conditions say it's allowed to rescind an offer if there's "an error or mistake that is reasonably obvious."
"As a gesture of goodwill, we're rebooking customers in Business Class at no additional cost," the statement added. "Customers also have the option of a full refund."

Last year, Qantas unveiled new first- and business-class suites for its longest routes. These suites feature fully enclosed sleeping spaces, lie-flat beds, and customizable lighting.
The nonstop flights were initially set to be launched in early 2025 but were pushed to 2026. They are expected to be the world's longest, connecting Sydney to New York and London.
Such journeys usually involve a stopover in places such as San Francisco, Singapore, or Dubai, but passengers will spend up to 21 hours in the air on these trips.
In May, the airline agreed to pay nearly 8,000 would-be passengers up to about $300 after the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission accused it of selling tickets for flights that it knew were canceled.
The company did not respond to a request for comment at the time. In a press release published in October , it said "mistakes were made" but that it "did not delay communicating with our passengers for commercial gain."
Correction: August 26, 2024 — This story has been corrected to reflect that Qantas' initial launch date for its longest-ever flights was pushed from 2025 to 2026.

At M.I.T., Black and Latino Enrollment Drops Sharply After Affirmative Action Ban
Asian American students made up almost half of the 2028 class — the first admitted since the end of affirmative action.
By Anemona Hartocollis and Stephanie Saul
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s incoming class of 2028 saw a precipitous drop-off in the percentage of Black, Hispanic, Native American and Pacific Islander students, the university announced on Wednesday. It is M.I.T.’s first undergraduate class to be admitted since the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision last year banning affirmative action, and M.I.T. is the first major university to release statistics on the composition of its freshman class since the high court’s ruling.
For the incoming class of 2028, about 16 percent of students are Black, Hispanic, Native American and Pacific Islander, compared with a baseline of about 25 percent of undergraduate students in recent years, the announcement said.
The comparison to the class of 2027 was also dramatic. The percentage of Black students enrolled dropped to 5 percent from 15 percent, and the percentage of Hispanic and Latino students dropped to 11 percent from 16 percent. White students made up 37 percent of the new class, compared with 38 percent last year.
On the other hand, the percentage of Asian American students in the class jumped to 47 percent from 40 percent. (The percentages do not add up to 100, according to M.I.T., because students could declare more than one race.)
“The class is, as always, outstanding across multiple dimensions,” Sally Kornbluth, president of M.I.T., said in the announcement, adding, “What it does not bring, as a consequence of last year’s Supreme Court decision, is the same degree of broad racial and ethnic diversity that the M.I.T. community has worked together to achieve over the past several decades.”
Edward Blum, the founder of Students for Fair Admissions, the organization that successfully sued to end race-conscious admissions, welcomed the decision as proof that the Supreme Court ruling was having a positive effect.

Class of 2028 shares why IU is the ideal launchpad
As the school year begins, thousands of new students have arrived on Indiana University’s core campuses in Bloomington and Indianapolis. For many, it’s their first time on collegiate grounds as an undergraduate and their first step on a journey to shape the world.
The Class of 2028 is full of passionate, mission-oriented people who want to make a difference. Six freshmen share why IU is the ideal place for them to achieve their goals.
First-class academics
Alexis Nguyen, a freshman on the Bloomington campus, is a first-generation college student from Carmel, Indiana, with dreams of going into medicine.
“I chose IU because it was one of the best options for my major, biology pre-med,” Nguyen said. “Not to mention, the sheer amount of variety they have to offer is incredible.”
The Department of Biology in the College of Arts and Sciences is nationally recognized for its world-class research, highly ranked programs and breadth of disciplines, including ecosystems, bioinformatics and genomics.
Sade Ilawole traded West Coast sun for B-town fun, hoping to matriculate through one of the top 10 undergraduate business programs . As a pre-business student , she’ll spend her first year taking Kelley School of Business classes in hopes of being admitted to the school her sophomore year. She plans to major in marketing, a program in which Kelley is ranked third best in the country.
Spencer Meyer was born and raised in Bloomington, so he is no stranger to IU. He’ll be preparing for the world stage at the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies and The Media School .
Elaina Gunn from Zionsville, Indiana, and Chandler Harris from Indianapolis are eager to explore the future of technology on the IU Indianapolis campus at the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering .
“I wanted to select a university that catered to my needs and wants,” Harris said. “IUI is one of few that will allow me to study my interests and keep my personal life normal while elevating. I plan to major in informatics and either double major or minor in criminal justice.”
If Harris does so, she’ll be studying at the Paul H. O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs , one of the best public affairs schools in the country. But in order to enact criminal justice, you need well-equipped investigators to bring the facts to light. That is what Libby Nuetzman hopes to do.
“I’m going to be studying forensics and investigative sciences,” said Nuetzman, a student in the School of Science from Plainfield, Indiana. “I chose IUI because it is close to home, and it has what I want to do in the future.”
Affordable and accessible
On the journey to higher education, many prospective students are faced with financial obstacles. As a state school, IU reduces that barrier for Hoosier learners through discounted resident tuition.
A wide variety of scholarships are also available. Meyer received a Provost’s Scholarship and a Direct Admission Scholarship from the Hamilton Lugar School, making his educational goals a reality.
Additionally, IU Bloomington has scholar programs designed to help students from underrepresented backgrounds get the support they need to succeed. Ilawole is a Hudson and Holland Scholar , which gives her access to mentorship, career development programming, wellness activities and academic enrichment. Nguyen, a member of the Groups Scholars Program that supports first-generation and underrepresented students, spent six weeks on the Bloomington campus in the summer with her cohort. She took classes while establishing a network of social and academic support.
“A big factor in choosing IUI was the scholarships and grants that were offered,” Harris said.
As a Norman Brown Diversity and Leadership Scholar , Harris will engage with the Indianapolis community through leadership and civic activities. She also received a scholarship through an IU Indianapolis partnership with the Center for Leadership Development , a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of minority youth in Central Indiana.

The IU spirit is felt across the state, with a unique flavor on each campus. Gunn said she was drawn to the welcoming atmosphere of IU Indianapolis.
“I chose IUI because the opportunities are endless, not only for education and networking but for social acceptance,” she said. “I greatly admire how open-minded and loving the environment at IUI is, and how they put an emphasis on awareness.”
In Bloomington, athletics are a fierce source of pride, and Ilawole is excited to fight for the glory of old IU as a fan and a new player on the volleyball team.
“I chose IU because of the sense of community; the coaches and girls of the volleyball team felt like family,” she said. “I’m looking forward to meeting new people, going to sporting events and playing in the Big Ten.”
“I’m looking forward to discovering more about myself and learning new life skills,” Nguyen said. “I would love to get into some writing clubs. A friend and I even discussed starting a club of our own.”
For Meyer, having been around the Bloomington campus all his life, there is no other place he’d rather be.
“I chose IU because you can’t beat a Big Ten school with such a vast array of resources in your own backyard,” he said. “The facilities, faculty, events and culture are the perfect mix of college town vibes that no other college can match.”
