Thanks Ann. There are many treasures of India that people are unaware of. Nothing to be ashamed of. As far as I know the best quality tea and coffee produced in India are exported to the West because they are way too expensive for Indian markets.

Wayanad is a beautiful mountainous district in the Malabar region of Kerala located on the western ghats. It is sparsely populated and rural, with most of the land area covered with forests. The district abounds with hill stations , wildlife sanctuaries, rivers, dams, tea estates and trekking opportunities, with temples and heritage locations thrown in for good measure. Spread over 2,132 square kilometres, the district lies at an elevation of 700 metres, with its highest point reaching 2,100.

Wayanad borders Karnataka to its east and Tamil Nadu to its southeast. The districts of Kozhikode , Kannur and Malappuram form its eastern, northern and southern borders respectively. Wayanad is a popular weekend destination for travellers from Bangalore and Mysore .

Wayanad is divided into three talukas - Vythiri, Mananthavady and Sultan Bathery, named after the towns that serve as their headquarters.

Wayanad is the best place in Kerala for hill tourism. Most parts of the district are protected forest and the remaining area is lush green cultivation with a relatively thinner population.

Urbanization has reached only 4% of the district. The altitude reaches up to 2,100 ft in some parts of Wayanad.

Wayanad gets its name from Vayal Naadu, or "The land of the paddy fields". It shares much of its history with Karnataka, having been a possession of many of the dynasties that ruled that state, including the Kadambas, the Chalukyas and the Hoysalas. This history accounts for the existence of Jain temples in this region, though Jainism has a negligible presence in modern Kerala.

In the 18th century, the region of Wayanad was at the centre of a tripartite conflict between Hyder Ali (and later his son Tipu Sultan), Pazhassi Raja, a ruler of the kingdom of Kottayam , and the British. Wayanad changed hands multiple times. When it was with Tipu, he stationed his artillery battery in the village we now know as Sultan Bathery. After Tipu was defeated and killed by the British, Pazhassi Raja rebelled against the British over the status of Wayanad that ultimately resulted in the killing of the Raja, whose tomb can still be seen in the district.

Wayanad finally came under the British who made it part of the Malabar district of the Madras Province. After independence, Madras province became Madras state. When the states were reorganized on linguistic lines, Wayanad became part of Kerala due to the prominence of its Malayali speaking population

Malayalam is the most commonly spoken language. English is understood by about half the people, but most lack conversational fluency, so you may not get a reply. According to Wikipedia, there is a Kannada-speaking population in Wayanad, but Kannada is not understood widely.

The district has neither an airport nor railway lines, so the only way to get in is by road. The nearest airport and railway stations are located at Kozhikode , around 100km away. Bangalore and Mysore are the other two nearby cities with airports, Of the two, Bangalore is the more realistic option as there are few flights to Mysore at the moment.

Driving in from Karnataka via Mysore or Madikeri is easier than from other districts of Kerala, Access from Kerala is difficult because of the mountain passes or 'ghat roads'.

Buses are available from Kozhikode and Mysore .

Night traffic is banned towards Mysore, Bangalore side. However, night traffic is allowed through Mananthavady .

• Kozhikode-Thamarassery-Vythiri-Kalpetta. 70 km.
• Kannur-Iritty-Kottiyoor-Boystown-Mananthavady. 94 km (Very steep and risky climb)
• Thalassery-Kuthuparamba-Nedumpoyil-Periya-Boystown-Mananthavady. 82 km
• Vadakara-Kuttiady-Niravilpuzha-Kanhirangad-Kallody-Mananthvady. 67 km
• Vadakara-Kuttiady-Kanhirangad-Vellamunda-Tharuvana-Padincharethara- Kalpetta. 88 km
• Malappuram-Nilambur-Vazhikkadavu-Gudalur-Sultanbathery. 120 km
• Mananthavady-Kutta-Gonikupa-Virajpet-Madikeri. 115 km. Night traffic is allowed only in this route.

• bus stations in Wayanad tend to disappoint you with the shortage of buses and no facility for sitting. But the KSRTC bus station at Sultan Battery has good connections to places inside Wayanad or outside Wayanad.
• Cars can be rented for as cheap as ₹1800 a day with a driver. The rate is even cheaper if you rent without a driver.

You can drink coffee at this bus station, but any snacks purchased will be immediately snatched by the ubiquitous monkey groups.

Bamboo rice (called Mulayari by locals) can be found in Wayanad. These are seeds of the Bamboo plant, richer in protein than rice and wheat, but tasting like rice. Beer and wine are easily available. Stronger drinks are prohibited. Kambalakkad though does not have beer- you'd have to get it from Kalpetta or a neighboring town.

• Leeches are common in the hills. Carry some table salt to dislodge the leeches.

  Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

One of the major highlights of Wayanad tourism is its wildlife, and you’ll find plenty of it in the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. It was started in 1973 and became a key part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, the first biosphere out of 14 biospheres in India. Comprising two major sections named Muthanga and Tholpetty, the sanctuary shares borders with other regions famous for their biodiversity. 

  Both Muthanga and Tholpetty are closed from mid-March to mid-April but are open during Wayanad’s soaking monsoons. The drive towards Muthanga and Tholpetty is beautiful with a wall of green on both sides. Paddy fields, plantations and thickets of bamboo trees and ginger bushes keep pace with you.

Wayanad tourism offers a two-hour jeep safari to get your fill of the awe-striking flora and fauna here. Ride under the dappled sunshine of the deciduous forest with patches of evergreen forests alive with the calls of around 216 bird species including peacocks, babblers, owls, cuckoos and black woodpeckers to mention a few. You’ll spot bamboo groves and trees like teak, rosewood, eucalyptus and silver oak plantations. 

Book a safari at one of the two entrances to gape at langurs, bison, bonnet macaques, sambar, wild boars and herds of majestic elephants in their habitat. If luck favours you then you might be able to spot a fiery-eyed tiger or a graceful leopard in the forest. Snakes and monitor lizards slither in the undergrowth and crocodiles and termite hill geckos lurk in the shadows.

Banasura Dam

The largest earthen dam in India and the second-largest in Asia, the Banasura Dam features prominently in the list of Wayanad tourist spots. 

It is made of massive stones and boulders and is built along the Karamanathody river. This quaint dam has occupied pride of place in Wayanad tourism. The dam helps provide for irrigation, drinking water and electricity to the surrounding areas. The climb is well worth the effort when you arrive at the top of the dam to look down at the gleaming expanse of the reservoir below. 

  The water is dotted with small, verdant islands which are home to elephants. The monsoon lends the view an ethereal touch. You can hike up to the Banasura Peak to cross tinkling streams, waterfalls and lush greenery. Look down upon the Banasura lake framed by the Banasura hills which owe their name to the son of a famous ruler, King Mahabali. 

  Wayanad tourism has built a children’s park with tree swings to keep them busy. There are also some food stalls you can browse through to load up on snacks to go with the sensational view. Go speed boating on the lake to feel the wind in your hair and your adrenaline coursing or take a pedal boat to relax and enjoy the sight around you.

Kuruva Dweep 

This river delta is a hidden gem of Wayanad tourism and comprises a cluster of islands all carpeted with greenery and spread over 950 acres. The island is inhabited with exotic species of birds and plants such as rarely found orchids and herbs. Surrounded by streams, Wayanad tourism has come up with bamboo rafts and fibreglass boats that glide across the water for ten minutes until you reach the thickly forested islands. Take the rafts around to explore all the islands, each more charming than the last. Delve deeper inside the island to come upon bridges made of bamboo and towering trees which are rare and wizened with age. Stroll through the pristine island to soak in its beauty or trek around to cover more ground. This ecologically delicate island is well protected by Wayanad tourism and hence no parties or picnics are allowed here.

  You must get passes from the Forest Department to visit the island which are readily available at the counter. Visits to the cluster of islands are restricted during the monsoon. They remain open during October to May and you can feast your eyes on this beauty at a nominal fee. Just make sure you get here between 9.00 am to 5.00 pm.

Thirunelli temple 

  This attraction has to have a spot in your Wayanad tourist places list. The Thirunelli temple with ancient temple architecture stands pretty beside the forest-covered Brahmagiri hills in Wayanad and paints a pretty picture, making it one of the gems in the crown of Wayanad tourism. 

  Known as Wayanad tourism’s ‘Kashi of the south’, the temple was built around an interesting legend. The story goes that while going around the world, Lord Brahma came upon the Brahmagiri hills which left him smitten with their beauty. He descended to explore the place and had a vision of Lord Vishnu under an amla tree. According to Wayanad tourism, Lord Vishnu’s three incarnations namely Parasuram, Ram and Krishna have visited the temple on separate occasions during different ages. Lord Vishnu, in turn, promised that the water around the temple could wash away all earthly sins and gave birth to the stream of Papanashini (destroyer of sins). 

  The temple is imbued with an air of devotion and soul-soothing serenity, surrounded as it is with lush forests. All rituals of the temple are performed on the banks of the Papanashini stream which is believed to have medicinal properties. A sacred pond lies next to the stream where earlier five streams would pour in. Fringed by dense bushes, the pond holds in the middle a stone slab with the foot imprint of Lord Vishnu. These religious elements make the temple a hotspot for Hindu pilgrims in Wayanad tourism.

There is a holy rock in the temple where people pray for peace for their ancestors. On the western side of the temple lies the cave temple Gunnika which is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Sit down by the temple to stare at the grand pillars and stone carvings against the mesmerising backdrop of mist-covered peaks to sense the tranquillity seeping through your being.

Trek to a heart-shaped lake

Lace on your trekking shoes to hike to Wayanad tourism’s highest attraction, the Chembra Peak. The climb is well worth it when you come across a stunning heart-shaped lake called Hridaya Saras set on rolling green meadows. Naturally shaped into a heart, the lake has a glassy surface and is so clear that you can see all the way to the bottom. 

The climb itself is a treat. Starting off, you’ll be treated to green plantations and rolling hills which are one of the delights of Wayanad tourism. As the climb steepens and your legs start protesting, you’ll be compensated with valleys opening up before you to give you sweeping views of the panoramic hills and countless treetops. There is a five-kilometre hike to get to the watchtower and a three and a half kilometre trek through dappled forests and grasslands to get to the summit. The trek is spread over five hills; sing a cheery tune along with the birds in the forest to break through the foliage and look at the unique lake. 

Wayanad tourism has made permits available for the trek at the VSS office, which is two kilometres away from the town of Meppadi. You’ll need a ticket which is valid for a group of ten people and comes with a guide who will meet you on the observation deck. The only downside is that a single person, without a group, will still have to shell out the same amount regardless of whether he’s travelling with a group or not.

Pakshipathalam

If you’re a hardcore trekker who’d like something more challenging then head out for this 7 km-trek which has large boulders studded deep in the forest for clambering. The lush forest has deciduous trees through which sunlight streams in shafts. With numerous kinds of birds chittering in the trees, bring your binoculars along for a good session of birdwatching. 

Permits are required for this trek which you can get at forest offices in the south or north Wayanad. The DTPC office in Kalpetta, under Wayanad tourism, also organises trekking guides that charge about Rs 600 per day. You can also camp in the forest and spend a night under a starry ceiling for an incredible experience. You can rent camping gear at Rs 250. If you love your own company when it comes to trekking then get your permit and reach the Thirunelli temple bright and early at 8.00 am. 

Enjoy amazing waterfalls

While Wayanad tourism boasts of numerous waterfalls sprinkled liberally all over the evergreen landscapes of Wayanad, a particularly striking waterfall is the Soochipara Falls.

Enjoy a scenic drive replete with views of rolling green tea estates as you drive from Meppadi to the Sentinel Rock Waterfalls which Soochipara is also known as. Nestled amid deciduous, evergreen and alpine forests, this three-tiered waterfall cascades with tremendous force. The waterfall is named Soochipara or Needle rock as the water hits sharp spikes of granite at the base.

The 200m high waterfall has a cliff face which adrenaline junkies can climb. The waterfall forms a pool which looks so tempting that you won’t be able to resist diving in for a refreshing dip. If you’d rather stay dry, stand near the falls to feel the cool spray on your face.

You can also trek up to the Sunrise Valley to look down upon the falls.

Marvel at cave drawings

Eddakal cave is one of India’s prominent prehistoric rock shelters and a highlight of Wayanad tourism. Get a workout on the one-kilometre uphill trek through an aromatic coffee estate.

The cool darkness of the caves harbour art from the Neolithic Age in 4000 BC and Megalithic Age. Some caves have 98ft long, 30 ft wide carvings of a chieftain, wild animals and writings in the Brahmi script.

A steep 20-minute walk up the Ambukuthi mountain takes you to a wonderfully lit cave which has a collection of ancient petroglyphs which goes back over 3000 years and offers sweeping views of Wayanad which will make your jaw drop.

If you’d like to stick around longer amidst all the history, then head to Eddakal Hermitage which has cottages around the hill and a cave restaurant where you can dig into delicious food during a candle-lit dinner.

Stare in awe at legendary Chain Tree

The Chain Tree is a lesser-known attraction of Wayanad tourism and is set in the mist-shrouded ghats of Lakkidi. The shackled ficus tree has a legend around it in which a tribal, Karinthandan showed a British engineer a way through the eerie Thamarassery Ghat. The Britisher wanted to grab credit for the route and killed the tribal. Since then, the outraged ghost of the tribal started haunting passerby who pleaded with a priest to rid them of the spirit. The priest exorcised the ghost and tied him to the tree. Incredibly, as the tree grew taller, the shackles draped around the branches grew with it and miraculously didn’t fall short in length. 

Visit this temple which was once a storage centre for ammo

Wayanad tourism has some spectacular places on offer and Sultan’s Battery, a quaint peaceful town with plenty of greenery and sparkling streams is one of them. The place has an intriguing story behind it. In the 18th century, when Tipu Sultan was opposing the British colonialists, he erected a watchtower on the outskirts of Ganapathivattom for defence. He needed a place to store ammunition and hatched a clever plan to hide his armoury in a 14th-century Jain temple. He cleared the idols and stored his ammunition there to fool the invading forces. The place is thus named Sultan’s Battery or Sultan Bathery. The Jain temple still exists today and helps tell the fascinating story.

Get bamboo handicrafts from Uravu 

  Uravu, a design centre and a bamboo processing unit near Kalpetta is a place for bamboo handicrafts created by rural artists, women and tribals to help them earn and utilise the bamboo freely abundant in Wayanad. Wayanad tourism encourages tourists to buy beautiful lampshades, handicrafts, spice boxes, binsi (a hollow reed with a musical sound) and a rainmaker in which seeds are filled in a hollow bamboo to recreate the sound of rain. How To Travel In Wayanad

The best way to explore Wayanad tourism and traverse emerald landscapes is to get your own car so that if you come across a spot that touches the chords of your heart, you can stop and stay awhile longer. However, if you’d rather forego the hassle of bringing your own vehicle and managing it (parking is forever a problem for vehicle owners), there are plenty of transport options available in Wayanad, courtesy Wayanad Tourism, which we’ll mention in this Wayanad travel guide. 

Thanks to Wayanad tourism all the places in the district are well connected. There are private companies with a network of buses that can take you to all the places of interest in Wayanad and its outskirts.

If you feel like you haven’t gotten your fill of Wayanad’s rolling tea estates, Wayanad tourism’s got that covered too. KSRTC has non-AC all Wayanad round buses that take you through the sights starting from Sultan Bathery. The bus goes through all the major stops such as Chulliyod, AmbalaVayal, Vaduvanchal, Meppadi, WIMS Hospital and more.   

Wayanad tourism also has arrangements for taxis on hire throughout your Wayanad trip. Some companies provide a guide and a driver along with the taxi while others have tour packages you can book online. You can also choose to get the local experience by travelling in shared or private rickshaws!

Wayanad tourism has plenty of options available for budget travellers by way of hostels, dormitories and guest houses. Dormitories offer stays for as low as Rs 200 per day. It is recommended that you travel in a group to split transport costs. All in all, with stay costs, travel expenses and food, estimated costs should come up to around Rs 2,500 per person for around three days. 

Mid-budget travel

Wayanad tourism has plenty to offer to mid-budget travellers as well. You could opt to stay at an inn which can cost you anything between Rs 750 to Rs 1,500 per day. 

Luxury travel 

If you’d rather spend your holiday surrounded by all kinds of creature comfort, then Wayanad tourism has plenty of resorts complete with a pool and downy beds. Be prepared to shell out around Rs 5000 per day at resorts. However, if you’re travelling with family, it would be prudent to book a homestay for the ease and comfort of a home where you can save on costs by cooking your own meals. This would put down costs at Rs 15,000 to Rs 18,000 for around two-three days.

The Wayanad tourism site suggests that you remember to pack an umbrella for those brief but heavy downpours. Pack a hairdryer which will prove to be your saviour during the monsoon. You’ll not only be able to dry your hair but also other items like clothes, bags etc.

1) Visit Jain temple ruins

The Wayanad district was once home to a Jain populace which disappeared a few hundred years ago. The cause remains unknown. They left behind Jain temple architecture which now stand as scattered ruins across Wayanad. Pamaram has ruins of a Jain temple which you can visit to understand the ancient culture of the vanished community. The structure stands wizened by time but remnants of its glorious rock sculptures still remain. 

2) Sit by the Phantom rock

Another attraction of Wayanad tourism, though not as famous as the others, is the Phantom rock. Glimpse at nature’s handiwork called the Phantom rock which has several rocks seemingly precariously balanced to form a human-like figure. Locally the attraction is known as Cheengeri Mala. The metamorphic rock formation lies near Ambalavayal in Wayanad and resembles a human skull. The site of the rock offers a vantage point to look out to some beautiful landscapes. 

3) Gaze at the Kanthanpara Waterfalls in Meppadi

The Kanthanpara falls lose out to its more famous peers of Wayanad tourism but is no less charming. It is likely, that this waterfall won’t be crowded so you can enjoy some peace in seclusion at the falls. The 30 m high waterfall swells during the monsoon and becomes a stunning sight to see. 

There are many ways by which you can reach the picturesque district. Wayanad tourism has ensured that Wayanad is well connected by road, air and rail.

Kozhikode airport is around 25 km away from the heart of the city. You can fly down to Wayanad from Madurai, Chennai, Coimbatore, Goa, Bangalore and Mumbai.

There is a Kozhikode railway station, south of the Manachira Square. You can take a train to the railway station from Mangalore, Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai, Coimbatore, Goa and Mumbai.

Renowned for its breathtaking vistas and natural splendour, Wayanad is a distinguished district within the verdant landscapes of Kerala, India. Nestled at elevations ranging from 700 to 2100 meters above sea level, Wayanad boasts attractions such as the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and the historic Edakkal Caves. Aptly termed the “green paradise,” it is nestled amidst the Western Ghats .

Optimal for exploration between October and May, Wayanad welcomes visitors with pleasant temperatures and agreeable weather conditions during this period. However, the monsoon season from June to August blankets the region in continuous rainfall.

Wayanad offers abundant hiking trails and points of interest and beckons adventurers to immerse themselves in its natural wonders. With numerous attractions, a recommended 4 to 5 days duration allows for a comprehensive region discovery. Even after two visits, Wayanad continues to unveil its treasures, indicating the depth of its allure and the richness of its offerings.

How to Get to Wayanad?

The closest domestic and international airport serving Wayanad is located in Calicut/Kozhikode, approximately 90 kilometres away. Calicut International Airport is a hub for various airlines, including Air India and Indigo . Travellers can easily arrange for a taxi from the airport to reach Wayanad.

Wayanad enjoys good connectivity with various towns and cities, although it’s important to note that some roads, particularly during rainfall, may be narrow and less maintained.

• Calicut to Wayanad: Approximately 85 kilometres.
• Bangalore to Wayanad: Approximately 290 kilometres.
• Mysore to Wayanad: Approximately 160 kilometres.

By Public Transport

• Train – The nearest train station serving Wayanad is located in Calicut/Kozhikode, approximately 85 kilometres away. For the latest information on train routes and availability, please visit the IRCTC website.
• Bus – Wayanad’s primary bus stop is in Kalpetta, a town within the Wayanad district. For bus reservations, refer to the Redbus website.

Transportation Within Wayanad

The most convenient mode of transportation within Wayanad is by car, offering both affordability and ease, especially if you have your vehicle. However, during my second visit to Wayanad, I found myself without my car, necessitating reliance on taxi or auto-rickshaw services. While public buses are available, their schedules are not widely published, posing challenges due to language barriers.

It’s essential to exercise caution when dealing with auto-rickshaw drivers, as some may attempt to overcharge. On my initial night in Kalpetta, I hired an auto-rickshaw to reach the Windflower Resort and Spa, only to discover that I had been charged INR 800, significantly more than the standard fare of around INR 250.

Fortunately, I encountered another auto-rickshaw driver, Jason, who provided exceptional service. Jason was fair in pricing and attentive throughout our journey together, ensuring a pleasant experience despite the earlier setback.

Things To Do in Wayanad

Banasura Sagar Dam

Situated 21 kilometres from Kalpetta, the Banasura Sagar Dam is India’s largest earthen dam and the second largest in Asia. It spans the Karamanathodu tributary of the Kabini River and is also called the Kuttiyadi Augmentation Main Earthen Dam. The dam creates a reservoir with a series of picturesque islands rising to 38.5 meters and stretching over 685 meters.

• Accessing the dam requires guests to embark on a jeep ride, with the cost of the round trip amounting to INR 20.

Beecraft Honey Museum and Factory

Despite its modest size, the Beecraft Honey Museum is one of the most captivating museums I’ve ever explored. Upon arrival, visitors are warmly greeted by a guide leading them through fascinating information about bees and honey. From the various types of honey to the roles of different bees within a colony, the tour delves into intriguing topics, such as the reasons behind the changing colours of honey over time.

Of particular interest is the insight provided into the intricate workings of bee colonies, including the hierarchy featuring the queen bee and the worker bees and the meticulous process of selecting the queen bee. Witnessing the systematic nature of this process left me genuinely shocked.

• The museum welcomes visitors daily from 9:30 AM to 8:30 PM, offering an enriching experience.
• Admission is priced at INR 50 per person, which includes a delightful honey-tasting session, adding a sweet touch to the educational journey.

The Chain Tree is a prominent tourist attraction steeped in local folklore and history. Legend has it that it is linked to a tribal figure named Karinthandan, a member of the Paniyas tribe . Karinthandan aided the British in navigating the mountainous terrain, only to meet a tragic end at their hands. His assistance was crucial in unveiling routes through the dense rainforests, knowledge exclusive to the local inhabitants.

Following Karinthandan’s demise, eerie incidents plagued travellers and visitors along these routes, with frequent accidents and wild animal encounters. To quell these disturbances, a priest undertook extensive efforts to bind Karinthandan’s spirit to a Ficus tree using a chain.

• Entrance to the Chain Tree site is free of charge, allowing visitors to delve into its captivating tale without any financial barrier.

Chembra Peak

Standing proudly at 2100 meters, Chembra Peak reigns as the loftiest mountain in Wayanad, drawing adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike. Renowned for its captivating flora and fauna, this peak holds a special allure for trekkers seeking awe-inspiring experiences. Along the trail lies a picturesque heart-shaped lake known as Hridayasarassu, adding to the enchantment of the journey.

The trek to Chembra Peak spans approximately 3 kilometres one way from the starting point. It’s essential to commence the trek early and reach the starting point by 7 AM, as only 200 individuals are permitted to trek each day.

Entry to the trekking trail requires a nominal fee of INR 250 per person for joining a group or INR 850 for solo trekkers or groups, payable to the forest officials at the trail’s outset.

For optimal trekking conditions, plan your expedition between September and February. It’s advisable to avoid the monsoon season from June to August, as the trail can become perilously slippery.

Edakkal Caves

Situated 25 kilometres from Kalpetta, the Edakkal Caves are a testament to ancient history, boasting pictorial writings dating back to at least 6000 BCE, attributed to the Neolithic era. These two natural caves offer intriguing insights into the lives of early civilizations, with the youngest paintings hinting at a potential link to the Indus Valley Civilization. Evidence suggests that the caves were inhabited at various points throughout history.

• Open daily from 9 AM to 2 PM, the Edakkal Caves beckon visitors to explore their mysteries.
• Admission to this historical site is priced at a modest INR 20 per person, offering a fascinating glimpse into humanity’s past.

Jain Temple (Mirror Temple)

The Glass or Mirror Jain Temple , dedicated to Parswanatha Swamy, the third Thirthankara of Jains, is a magnificent architectural marvel in Wayanad. Located approximately 20 kilometres from Kalpetta, this temple exudes beauty and serenity.

• Open daily from 6 AM to 4 PM; the Glass or Mirror Jain Temple invites visitors to immerse themselves in its tranquil ambience and admire its exquisite craftsmanship.
• Admission to this spiritual sanctuary is free of charge, welcoming all who seek solace and enlightenment.

Karlad Lake

Karlad Lake, nestled approximately 8 kilometres from Vythiri and a mere 3 kilometres from the iconic Banasura Sagar Dam, is a serene freshwater oasis, ranking as the second largest lake after Pookode Lake.

• Welcoming visitors daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, Karlad Lake offers many recreational opportunities amidst its picturesque surroundings.
• Entry to the lake is priced at INR 40 per adult, granting access to many activities, including boating, zip-lining, zorbing, kayaking, and more.

Kuruva Island

Encompassing an expansive 950 acres of land, Kuruvadweep, also known as Kuruva Island, is a pristine river delta teeming with diverse flora and fauna. This protected sanctuary is located approximately 40 kilometres from Kalpetta and is a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

One must embark on a scenic 2-kilometre trek through the lush surroundings to reach the falls. Despite being situated in South Wayanad, it’s closer to Trivandrum city.

• Meenmutty Waterfalls welcomes guests daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, providing ample time to soak in its beauty.
• Admission to the falls is priced at INR 30 per adult, offering an affordable opportunity to experience nature’s grandeur.

Neelimala Viewpoint

Providing breathtaking vistas of Meenmutti Waterfalls and the surrounding valleys, the Neelimala viewpoint is a captivating vantage point and a must-visit destination in Wayanad.

Pookade Lake

Pookode Lake, nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Wayanad district, is a serene freshwater reservoir surrounded by verdant forests. Situated approximately 15 kilometres from Kalpetta and 3 kilometres from Vythiri, this tranquil lake sits 770 meters above sea level. Boasting commercial development, Pookode Lake offers a range of activities, such as boating and kayaking, for visitors to enjoy.

• The entrance fee for Indian nationals is INR 40.
• INR 300 for a 2-member boat.

Seetha Lava Kusha Temple

Situated in Pulpally, the Seetha Lava Kusha Temple is a revered Hindu sanctuary surrounded by lush greenery in Wayanad. The temple holds deep spiritual significance and is dedicated to the deities Goddess Seetha, Lava, and Kusha. “Seetha” etymologically refers to soil or earth, symbolizing the divine connection to the land.

Constructed by Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja, a revered warrior of his era, the temple embodies rich historical and cultural heritage. Legend has it that Tipu Sultan , the ruler of Mysore, once plotted to destroy the temple. However, Goddess Seetha intervened, shrouding the area in darkness at noon, causing Tipu Sultan and his troops to retreat without causing harm to the sacred site.

Adding to its mystique, the temple and its surroundings are notably devoid of the common leeches found in other areas of Wayanad, a phenomenon shrouded in mystery and folklore. The Seetha Lava Kusha Temple is a testament to faith and divine protection, drawing devotees and visitors seeking solace and spiritual enlightenment.

Soochipara Waterfalls

The Sentinel Rock Waterfalls, also known as Soochipara Falls, is a mesmerizing three-tiered cascade nestled in the picturesque setting of Vellarimala near Kalpetta. Encircled by lush deciduous forests, this natural wonder captivates visitors with its serene beauty.

900 Kandi is a forest property at Thollayiram, approximately 13 kilometres from Meppadi. Additionally, the property boasts a swing that has gained fame on social media platforms.

Thirunelli Temple

Situated on the slopes of the Brahmagiri hills, the Thirunelli Temple is a sacred shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Revered as a place where devotees can perform rituals from birth to death, this temple holds profound spiritual significance.

En Uru, known as the Tribal Village, is Kerala’s inaugural tribal settlement, nestled within Pozhuthana village. Spearheaded by the Kerala government, this initiative aims to celebrate and preserve the rich traditional knowledge and livelihood practices of the diverse tribal communities.

• Operating hours: Open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM.
• Access to the village entrance is exclusively by jeep, with a return jeep ride costing INR 20 per person.

Varambetta Mosque

How to Plan a Trip to Wayanad

There is no railway station in Wayanad. The nearest junction is in Nilambur, 90KM away. The nearest major railhead is in Calicut, at 110KM. There are frequent trains to Calicut from all major towns of Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, and other Indian metro cities. From Nilambur or Calicut, you can book a cab to reach the place.

The hill station is well-connected to all major cities in South India by road like Bangalore, Mysore, Coimbatore, Kozhikode, Kochi, Thrissur etc. There are regular state-run and private buses from Kozhikode to Wayanad , Mysore to Wayanad, and similarly to Wayanad from Chennai, Coimbatore etc. However, the safest and the most convenient way to reach this hill station is by booking a cab from your nearest city.

The nearest airport to the town is Calicut International Airport, at 93KM from the main town. You can travel from any other major city/town in India to Calicut. From there, you can book an airport taxi or rent a car to reach Wayanad.

Tucked in the hills of Western Ghats, the weather is enjoyable and conducive all through the year. However, the rainy season from July to September can be dangerous to travel the steep terrain. About Wayanad

Tragic Landslides in Wayanad, Kerala: Helpline Numbers Released

Wayanad district in Kerala has been hit by catastrophic landslides following heavy rainfall, leading to the tragic loss of five lives, including two children. There are fears that hundreds might be trapped. The landslides have severely affected areas such as Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha, leaving them isolated. The ongoing heavy rain is hindering rescue operations, raising concerns about more individuals being trapped.

Wayanad Landslide Helpline Numbers

In response to the emergency, the Health Department has set up a control room and issued two helpline numbers: 9656938689 and 8086010833 . Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has announced the deployment of two Air Force helicopters to support search and rescue efforts. He emphasized that all government agencies are actively involved, and state ministers will be visiting Wayanad to supervise and coordinate rescue operations.

Wayanad Travel Blog – Joy amidst Leas

Wayanad travel blog – unlike most of my travels, this trip wasn’t planned, making it all the more interesting. Neither was Wayanad how I’d anticipated it to be! We initially planned on visiting Varkala, a coastal town on the south end of Kerala .

But a drive from Bangalore over 700 km proved to be a hectic journey. We stuck to the closest of Kerala’s forest paradise – Wayanad.

Thus, it’s the location itself that makes Wayanad all more popular, it’s reasonable distance from Kerala’s northern metropolitan cities. Here goes my Wayanad travel blog!

Wayanad Travel Blog: Is Wayanad Worth Going?

Yes! For someone like me, who enjoys hiking, adventure sports, and striking plantation views in the backdrop, it’s worth it all.

We had a huge hitch in decided where to go in Kerala. Some of us stuck to believing there’s not much to do in Wayanad apart from strolling its plantations ( like Ooty ). However, there is actually a handful of adventurous things to try here.

Not to mention, with Wayanad being a tourism spot, there are quite amazing facilities for all types of travelers. But that’s about it – the hilly town is perfect for a 4-5 days itinerary, no more. It’s a tiny rural town afterall.

Yet staying in a hostel here, I found out that a lot of travelers, both solo and couples, were staying for over a week. Most didn’t even check out Wayanad, they simply stayed at the scenic hostel spot amidst plantations on remote peaks.

It wasn’t the things to do in Wayanad, they were bothered about. In contrast, some visitors were mere on workations. They worked from their laptops sitting among tea plantations, a swing hanging from a large tree, an elevated viewpoint overlooking the panaromic landscape of forest, villages, and hills below.

Wayand Travel Blog: Essentials to Keep in Mind

Visiting Kerala in the mid-winter (January, 2023) and glancing at Google images of Wayanad, I expected the place to be chilly like Ooty . The temperature was more or less similar to Bangalore’s.

In fact, Bangalore was colder than Wayanad at the time! Here are some things to keep in mind about Wayanad, Kerala to get a vivid idea of what to expect.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Wayanad is during the winters with the moderate cool weather from October to February. This is also the peak season in Wayanad.

Wayanad is such a place where each season exhibits its own beauty. While summer (March to May) is humid, it’s a shoulder season where still quite many people visit. The forest’s canopies providing refugee from the summer heat is a bliss.

Understanding the Locals

Apart from the tourism-focused stays, restaurants, and attractions, it’s fairly difficult to talk with the locals. Not many speak English in Kerala, or Hindi for that matter, thus making it difficult to communicate here.

Almost all public signboards and busboards are in Malayalam as well. Our first stop in Kerala was a local biryani restaurant where we were tried finding vegetarian food. The only communication we made was calling out ‘Biryani?’ and ‘vegetarian?’.

To which the local would shake his head or nod as he pleased.

Internet Connectivity in Wayanad

The internet connectivity in urban parts of the town is mediocre and enough to find directions on Maps. But probably not enough for a zoom video call. When staying in Wayanad, request your stay about internet arrangement before booking.

Remote parts of Wayanad are far from network coverage. It can get tough getting 4G mobile network signal. Though we stayed at Zostel Plus Wayanad on a remote peak, an infrastructure was in place for strong network connectivity.

During the trip, I had to attend a couple zoom meetings that went with no hitches with the internet. There was, however, trouble finding network while driving through through the narrow paths.

When traveling Kerala by a personal vehicle, I recommend downloading your destination routes prior.

What to Pack

Get both sets of clothing, light clothes like t-shirts, shorts, and trousers for touring and warmer clothes like jackets and sweater for the nights and mornings.

Just like Bangalore, the heat gets pricky during the day and yet one can’t stay long out without a sweater by night. Get sports shoes and caps for hiking the Chembra Peak.

Wayanad Travel Blog: Our 3-Day itinerary

We made a 3-days trip out of which I stayed back 1-day. I’d Zoom meetings to attend to. But in overall – the stay, the places we visited along with trekking and some adventure activities, the whole trip was perfect for the 3 days. I regretted missing out on a day, but I hadn’t any choice.

Here’s how our 3 days in Wayanad went.

Day 1: Driving for 6 Hours

With Wayanad being the closest hotspot in Kerala from Bangalore at 290 km, we planned on driving early morning. As our punctuality would reward it, we began late around 8 a.m… ish.

We had decided on not racing the Honda City – we weren’t in a hurry. So we made stops for breakfast and a late lunch, thus adding a couple more hours to the 6 hours road trip. The fun began when we started driving from Meppadi, Wayanad up the hilly terrains.

The narrow curvy roads though remote, were well-built smooth tar tracks. As we drove up, we couldn’t help but stop for breathing in the serene valley forests belows.

Zostel Plus Wayanad First Impressions

Finally reaching the spot in the evening, we did find the location remote and were hesitant about our stay expectations. But I’m not exageratting when I say this – It couldn’t have been better.

The ambiance, staff, the location amidst plantation, the backpacker dormitories, and the overall cleanliness. There was a canteen which I found to be moderate. Some found it unreliable so they brought along their snacks.

My favorite part was its history. It was first opened as a tea estate by the British Rule in 1920s. The thatched rooves then saw themselves converted into a hospital post-independence.

While talking to the nightguard of the hostel around midnight, he talked of how he was born in this very hospital. Only in 2019 during the pandemic was the run-down structure acquired by Zostel – making a beautiful accommodation property.

If I’m visiting Wayanad again, I wouldn’t be surprised to find myself staying here again. The price at Rs. 800 per head for a night is pretty reasonable as well!

Campfire Nights with other Wanderers

Wayanad travel blog. We didn’t get out after checking in the first evening. It was already dusk and we were exhausted. Besides, with the Kalpetta region standing among elephant forests, wandering out after dusk wasn’t encouraged. Yes, elephants do tread the place at night!

So we stuck to the comforts of evening campfire and soothing greenery. The common lounge areas and a small library with plush couches were simply amazing. The reception area even had guitars, ukes, and other instruments.

Anyhow, I’d brought my own guitar along. We met a lot of new travelers – people from different parts of the country, some even foreign. Some enthusiastic about meeting strangers, some enjoying the campfire, and some nervous to socialize.

The fun part was how we stayed for 3 nights here and we met different people every single night by the same fireplace! Sometimes I stayed by the company, sometimes I took off with my guitar to play in solitude. Either way, they were amazing evenings.

Some were real travelers here, some were kids like us – out for a trip, and most on workations. Yet all of us talked of range of topics for hours. A few stayed longer, others left early confiding to their beds. We’d stay over midnights witnessing clear starry skies.

Day 2: Ziplining, Glass Bridge, and a Jeep Ride (while I stayed back)

Wayanad travel blog : Staying excited and awake over midnight the previous evening, we woke up late with a lazy breakfast at the canteen. Later on, the rest went out for the day’s itinerary while I stayed back.

I had a meeting to attend late afternoon. I didn’t mind with the laid back comfort of the hostel and company of other people on workations. However, I did miss out on a great deal – things you shouldn’t miss out on when in Wayanad.

Wayanad boasts the longest zipline in Kerala with a 300-meter stretch. The picturesque views of plantation as you glide down is something worth looking forward to.

While ziplining’s all fun, the stories of 900 kandi glass bridge were endless from my friends. Apparently, it wasn’t just the transparent bridge – it was the edgy jeep ride up the rough terrain that made it memorable.

From Kalladi, it’s a 6 km trip up with buggies that wobble throughout the rocky terrain up to the glass bridge. It costs Rs. 300-400 depending on how you negotiate with the local jeeps here. Private vehicles aren’t allowed in, thus making jeeps the only option. Trekking is another option.

Now, what was I doing all this while back at Zostel? Sitting amidst the plantations in one of the sitting areas, I typed away an article (on this blog, of course) and later attended that important meeting.

But the interesting part was staying back along with other travelers like me who talked of their experiences and lives. I met a man who’d volunteered for months in Isha, Coimbatore and was on a voyage covering South India after cruising through the north on his BMW motorcycle!

That reminded of an article I’d written on the benefits of traveling solo and why I should get back to it some day. The last solo travel I had had was in Singapore for 5 days .

Day 3: Chembra Peak and Quad Biking

Our final day was planned ahead for ascending the Chembra Peak at dawn. Always being a morning person, I woke everyone up and we headed out to get our entry tickets.

The forest department here allows only for the first 200 visitors per day, it’s an elephant’s land afterall. So get there early around 7 a.m. The punctual forest officer to approve tickets casually walked in 30 minutes late after we’d arrived at the counter.

After some hustle, we got through with our tickets and a sticker on our plastic bottle that was refundable later. It cost us Rs. 1770 in total for our group of 5. I later checked many sites that mention Rs. 750 for a 10-member group. But as of January, 2023 – this was the price we paid.

Frustrated with the forest officer’s late arrival, we hurried to the trek’s starting point as we’d already missed sunrise.

But we’d mistaken – it wasn’t the mere sunrise view we had paid for. It was the trek itself. We began walking at first, then slowly ascended under canopies. Then began actually climbing steep lifesize rocks.

After an hour or two after some huffs and puffs, a forest guide at his post appeared. He informed in his best broken Hindi that we were halfway there. That’s when we realized what we’d paid for, it was the long trek! And it couldn’t have been better.

While we initially begun out climbing as a group, I couldn’t help but climb faster with the adrenaline rush. We raced up the hills at some point. Around 10:30 or so, we made it to the infamous Heart Lake.

A naturally formed waterbody atop the mountain range with a view of the clouds floating below at one side and the remaining tip looming over. It was spectacular. However, we weren’t allowed to climb further. So we stopped here a good while.

After endless pictures and music as we went, we descended the Chembra Peak. Descending took less effort – just make sure to wear shoes with good grip.

Quad Biking out of the Blue

Wayanad travel blog . Hesitant whether to head out for lunch or continue with the activities. We were hungry but we’d have to go all the way down to Kalpetta for lunch. The Chembra Peak is remote afterall.

As luck turned out, there was a temporary stall selling watermelon slices, buttermilk, brownies, and few other picnic items you could think of. Since we were hungry, we couldn’t help bother prices and began feasting on whatever caught our eye.

It wasn’t until we realized we were already full and finished almost half the tiny stall! Amused with what we’d done, we began descending towards our parked car – and that’s where we found the quad bike parked.

The quad bike track was right by the parking lot. Bargaining down to around Rs. 300 per lap for a person, we got the bike in our hands. I wasn’t sure it’d be worth just a lap over the mud track.

But gripping my fingers onto the handle bars and man-handling the bike was simply out of the world! For someone who hasn’t ridden a quad bike before, it was quite worth the shot.

The same rental agency (Circuit Wheelz) that lent us the quad bike and its track also offered mountain biking with premium bikes. But with the trek and the quad bike handling, we hadn’t any energy left for it.

So we waved all of it goodbye. To the heart-shaped lake, the quadbike, and of course the tiny foodstall.

Wayanad Travel Blog: Tailpiece

That makes up for my Wayanad travel blog. This post was less informative and more of my personal experience. If you’re looking for a guide to Wayanad, I’ll be working on it very soon!

But to sum it up – I’d say Wayanad is a pleasant spot to visit for any type of visitor. Someone who’s looking for a short not-so-far weekend getaway or someone who loves road trips. It takes no more than a good 3-4 days to get around all the must-visit places here.

But some do stay longer to detox themselves from the city noise. The weather’s pleasant and the peaks are a paradise afterall.

As for getting around, I never did try local transport myself, but I’d highly recommend getting your own vehicle. It’s easier to get around the remote parts of the town at your own pace.

With Wayanad being a touristy area now, people are welcoming to foreigners here. The only hitch can be communicating with the locals at times. When (and if) I learn the Malayalam language some day, I’d probably have a more intense story to tell. But for now, this sums up my Wayanad Travel blog :)

Wayanad Tourism And Travel Guide

Wayanad is a scenic little paradise of canopies of Deciduous and Evergreen trees, waterfalls and rolls of tea plantations. Situated at the southernmost tip of the Deccan Plateau, Wayanad is a district in the state of Kerala . It boasts of hilly, mountainous regions, old prehistoric caves, ruins of forts and temples as well as is home to some of the most rare and endangered species.  Reached easily by air with the nearest Airport of Calicut, Wayanad is best visited in its winter months (October-February). To know more about tourism in Wayanad, read on the Wayanad travel guide below. 

How to Reach

Wayanad may be located in the lap of forests and mountains but it is easily accessible by rail, road as well as air.

By Air : Calicut is the nearest airport, 65 km away. It is well connected to most cities of Kerala as well as rest of India .

By Road : The road network is pretty well-developed to Wayanad. State run as well as private buses ply many routes from Kozhikode . Some major cities like Bangalore, Mysore and Chennai are connected to Kozhikode by regular buses.

By Rail : Wayanad does not have its own rail connectivity but is only 110 km away from Kozhikode Railway Station. You can take a taxi, book a car or board a public bus from Kozhikode to Wayanad.

Weather and Best Time to Visit

Wayanad has a pleasurable weather all year round but is best visited in winter months between October to February. This time brings cool, chilly breezes and dry skies, perfect for outdoor activities.

Summer (March-May)

The temperatures in summer are not so high, anywhere between 20-30°C. Because of the green cover and waterbodies, Wayanad is not as hot as the rest of the country in summer.

Monsoon (June-October)

Wayanad receives an average rainfall of 300 mm with temperatures varying from 15-25°C. Because of frequent rain, most outdoor activities are unavailable. Therefore it is not advisable for first time travellers to visit during monsoon.

Winter (October- February)

Winter in Wayanad marks the peak of tourist season with temperatures ranging from 10-25°C and cold breezes. There is a rather pleasant nip in the air and outdoor activities are most fun during this time. 

Things to Do

Sightseeing :

Wayanad boasts of some of the best natural sights as it is blessed with lush evergreen forests, rocky waterfalls, rich flora and fauna.  You can visit the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and sight herds of elephants, deer, guars, peafowls and tigers. Sentinel Waterfall offers some great picnic points with an overview of the rolling tea plantations below. There is also Pazhassi Memorial, to witness the history of Veera Pazhassi who fought a guerrilla war against the East India Company. 

Adventure Sports:

Treks up the Ambukuthi Hill are memorable and you can reach Edakkal Caves for more sightseeing. There is also the usual rock climbing and white water rafting at Sentinel Waterfalls. Hiking up the highest peak in Wayanad is another adrenaline rush. For this you can head to the Chembra peak.

Pilgrimage:

With a beautiful mix of churches, mosques, temples and Jain shrines, Wayanad is home to many religions and one spirituality. Nature becomes an unbreakable part of each of these shrines, be it the Pallikunnu Church of Mount Mary or the Thirunelli Temple of Maha Vishnu, Varambetta Mosque or Sulthan Bathery Jain Temple.  You can visit each and find out more about how religion is inspired as well as amalgamated with history, culture and nature of this place.

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary Safari:

Take a jeep safari in the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary. Sight the rare Bengal Tiger, deer, vultures, monkeys, elephants etc. Learn about the native medicinal plants and weeds with healing properties too on your way.

Edakkal Caves:

Home to one of the oldest and most perused petroglyphs, Edakkal is said to be 6000 years old. The images carved on stone walls are those of kings, queens, animals and prehistoric tools. Get your historic nerd glasses on and trek up to this time machine of humankind.

Cycling through Wayanad:

Wayanad has a few adventurous cycling routes for those willing to experience this place like a hermit traveller. Take your helmet and ride down through some pretty tricky bends and rocky curves, through untouched roads in the middle of rolls of tea gardens. You can also cycle across the border to Nilgiri in Tamil Nadu .  A few cycling routes start from Chudale, Kalpetta etc.

Wayanad is THE place to eat authentic Malabar cuisine, made from fresh, simple, local ingredients. Try their fish moilee, a curry prepared in rich coconut milk, mustard seeds and tempered curry leaves. Appams are usually best eaten with chicken stew and to treat your sweet tooth, indulge in some payasam (the kheer of South India ).

Pakka Politics NEWSLETTERS Beyond landslide debris: The making of Wayanad's vulnerability For the past 15 years, Chooralmala was home for Ranjith, a graphic designer, and his parents. Once a picturesque village with a clear stream flowing through it, Chooralmala is located in Meppadi grama panchayath of Kerala's Wayanad. Even after Ranjith moved to Kozhikode when he got a job, his parents continued to live among the tea hills in the valley of the mighty Vellarimala.  But the 2019 landslide in neighbouring Puthumala, which took 17 lives, prompted Ranjith and family to rethink their decision to live in Chooralmala. He came across several studies on Wayanad’s fragile ecosystems and learned that even his house was located on landslide susceptible land.  “Besides the one in Puthumala, there was a small landslide in Mundakkai [a village upstream from Chooralmala] in 2019. I had visited that place as part of the surveys conducted by the Hume Centre for Ecology and Wildlife Biology. That was the first time I considered shifting from Chooralmala,” he told TNM.  Ranjith said that he also read a landslide susceptibility report for Wayanad prepared by the Hume Centre – a research institute in Kalpetta dedicated to studying climate change and its impacts on ecosystems and wildlife. Following that, he bought land in Muttil, over 20 km from Chooralmala, and began constructing a house there.  Ranjith was part of a WhatsApp group for Wayanad weather forecast, an initiative of Hume Centre. When he saw reports of excessive rain on July 29, he travelled to Chooralmala to take his parents to Kozhikode. “The rainfall data for July 28 and 29 showed it was risky for my parents to stay in Chooralmala, so I took them to Kozhikode,” he said.  The next day, the family woke up to the news that their neighbourhood had been completely swept away in the massive landslides that killed over 300 persons in Punchirimattom, Mundakkai, and Chooralmala of the Meppadi grama panchayat. Not everyone in the landslide-hit villages had the awareness that Ranjith possessed. Neither did they have the means to uproot their current lives and plant themselves in safer locations. But the same cannot be said about the government.  Warnings had been sounded almost a decade and a half earlier, with the Madhav Gadgil-led Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel (WGEEP) classifying the location as an Ecologically Sensitive Area in 2011. The last warning, though unofficial, came 15 hours before the tragedy, from the Hume Centre, which alerted authorities to potential landslides following excessive rains in the two preceding days.  Union Home Minister Amit Shah too made a statement that a warning was given to the state government regarding landslides four days ago but a fact check showed this wasn’t true. “India does not have any system to predict landslides four days ahead. The pore pressure limit might be crossed and a landslide caused within seconds. What can be done is to identify vulnerable locations and take efforts to reduce the impact, not prevent the landslide," said KG Thara, a former member of the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA), while speaking to TNIE. Everything from excess rain, human intervention, changes in land use, and tourism have been blamed for the landslides that hit Wayanad in 2024, a stark reminder of the region's complex ecological vulnerability. This tragedy, rooted in centuries of land use changes from colonial-era plantations to modern tourism developments, exposes the dire consequences of ignoring scientific warnings and prioritising unsustainable development in the fragile Western Ghats ecosystem. As climate change intensifies extreme weather events, the disaster underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive reassessment of human activity and development policies in this ecologically sensitive region, balancing economic aspirations with environmental preservation to prevent future catastrophes. സ്വത്തും സമ്പാദ്യവും രക്തബന്ധങ്ങളും നഷ്ടമായി ദുരന്തഭൂമിയിൽ അവശേഷിച്ച മനുഷ്യരെ ചേർത്ത് പിടിക്കാൻ സർക്കാരും സന്നദ്ധ സംഘടനകളും പലവിധ പദ്ധതികളുമായി മുന്നിട്ടിറങ്ങിയത് സന്തോഷം തന്നെ. എന്നാൽ കഴിഞ്ഞ 10 വർഷത്തിനുള്ളിൽ കാർഷിക, പ്രവാസ, ഉദ്യോഗ മേഖലകളേക്കാളും കൂടുതൽ വയനാടിന്റെ  സാമ്പത്തിക രംഗത്തിനു ഏറ്റവും ഉണർവ്വ് കിട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നത് വിനോദ സഞ്ചാര മേഖലയിൽ നിന്നാണെന്നു മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നു. റോഡരികത്ത് ഉപ്പിലിട്ടത് വിൽക്കുന്ന ഉന്തുവണ്ടി കച്ചവടക്കാരൻ മുതൽ സ്റ്റാർ ഫെസിലിറ്റിയുള്ള ഹോട്ടലുകൾ വരെ ജീവിച്ചിരുന്നത് എന്റെ നാട് കാണാൻ വന്നിരുന്ന സഞ്ചാരികളെ ആശ്രയിച്ചാണെന്ന് വ്യാപാരികളുടെ സംഘടന കണക്കുകൾ നിരത്തി പറയുന്നു.  വയനാടിനെ അടയാളപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന കാർഷിക മേഖല മുതൽ  നാടിന്റെ നാനാവിധ മേഖലകളിലെ ക്രയവിക്രയങ്ങളെല്ലാം സഞ്ചാരികളെ ആശ്രയിച്ചായി മാറിയിട്ട് അൽപ കാലമായി. ഏകദേശം 15000- ൽ പരം   വ്യാപാര സ്ഥാപനങ്ങൾ മാത്രം വയനാട്ടിലുണ്ട്. അതിന്റെ 75% ഉപഭോക്താക്കളും മറുനാട്ടിലെ മനുഷ്യരായിരുന്നു. അവർ നടത്തിയ വ്യവഹാരങ്ങളാണ് ആ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളെയും  ജീവനക്കാരെയും അതിന്റെ ആശ്രിതരേയും ഈ നാട്ടിൽ ജീവിക്കാൻ പ്രേരിപ്പിച്ചത്.  എന്റെ ജന്മനാടായ കാക്കവയലിന്‍റെ  തൊട്ടടുത്തുള്ള കാരാപ്പുഴ ഡാം കാണാനും അവിടുത്തെ  റൈഡുകളാസ്വദിക്കാനും ദിനംപ്രതി 1000-1500 നിടയിൽ ആളുകൾ വന്നിരുന്നു.  ദുരന്തത്തിന് ശേഷം ഇപ്പോളവിടെ ശരാശരി 100 -ൽ താഴെ ടിക്കറ്റുകൾ മാത്രമാണത്രെ ദിവസവും മുറിക്കുന്നത്. ഇപ്പോൾ തുറന്നു പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്ന മറ്റു ടൂറിസ്റ്റ് സ്പോട്ടുകളുടേയുമെല്ലാം അവസ്ഥ ഇതൊക്കെ തന്നെയാണെന്ന് ആ മേഖലയിൽ സജീവമായവർ സാക്ഷ്യപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു. പ്രിയപ്പെട്ടവരേ....  അതി ഭീകരമാണ് വയനാടിന്റെ ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ നേർക്കാഴ്ച.!! Mohamed Riyas has said. The Minister made the announcement while addressing a meeting of tourism sector stakeholders from Wayanad, Kannur, and Kozhikode here on August 26 (Monday). Representatives of various tourism sector organisations, entrepreneurs, and service providers attended the meeting. Cinema houses in Bengaluru would display advertisements featuring Wayanad tourism, while FM radios would feed news related to the natural beauty and hospitality facilities in Kerala’s north-eastern district bordering Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, he said. Recalling that a similar campaign in 2021 had benefited Wayanad tourism, Mr. Riyas noted that the scenic district had become a weekend destination for Bengalureans. “The landslides gave travellers a scare. We need to get over this phase,” he said. Noting that the disaster had affected the tourism sector in Wayanad in several ways, Mr. Riyas said the consequent lull in economic activities had badly affected all stakeholders, from small traders to resort owners. “We see direct instances of the hardships. For instance, the men and women selling honey and gooseberries. Their business is terribly down,” he pointed out, highlighting the need for a revival of tourism in Wayanad. “The government is making all possible moves towards this mission.” As for rehabilitation, the Minister said the “change had been wonderful”. The government intended to address the concerns of all people, he added. “The result will be a permanent asset to Wayanad. All suggestions are welcome. You have full support from the government,” he added. Another high-level meeting in Thiruvananthapuram later will take up the recommendations received and share them with the Chief Minister. “We will discuss the suggestions with the other departments as well. By this December, we hope to restore normalcy in Wayanad in ways that enable resumption of full-fledged tourism activities,” said Mr. Riyas. A total of 35 representatives from the three districts participated in the meeting. Representatives of Wayanad Tourism Organisation (WTO), HATS (Homestay Kerala), Tourist Guide Association, Wayanad Eco Tourism Association, Wayanad Hotel and Restaurant Association, Wayanad Tourism Association, All Kerala Tourism Association, North Wayanad Tourism Association, Karapuzha Adventure Tourism Association, and Tourism Guide Association were present. Also present at the meeting were eight tourism organisations from Kozhikode district namely HATS (Homestay Kerala), Malabar Tourism Association, Malabar Tourism Council, Farm Tourism, Destination Kozhikode, Kerala Travel Mart, Hotel and Restaurant Association, and Sargaalaya.
