How to use voice dictation in PS5 messages
The PS5 introduced a new UI with lots of new features for PlayStation users. One of many features players might not know about is the ability to use voice dictation, so rather than typing messages to your friends, you can easily speak them. It's a touch hidden away but will save your fingers from having to type out long sentences one letter at a time. Here's how to use voice dictation in PS5 messages.
Products used in this guide
- A solid headset: Razer Kraken headset ($40 at Amazon)
- Spare controller: PS5 DualSense controller ($70 at Amazon)
- Press the PS button on your DualSense controller.
- Select a friend's profile in your list of friends via the Game Base.
- Now select Messages .
- Alternatively, you can select the card for an existing PS5 Party.
- Once you start typing a message, look for and select the small microphone icon in the digital keypad.
- If this is your first time using Voice Dictation, you'll have to agree to Sony's terms of service.
- Just speak out whatever you want and after a moment, the message will be typed for you.
While joining a PS5 Party for voice chat is an option, you can also just use Voice Dictation to just easily speak out long messages you want to send to your friends, rather than spending a long time typing. If you want to make sure your speech is picked up properly, or you intend to spend a lot of time talking to your friends in voice chat, you'll want to make sure you have one of the best PS5 headsets to make your voice as clear as possible.
Simple and clear Dollar for dollar, the Razer Kraken is one of the best headsets you can grab. It's inexpensive, has a solid microphone and audio drivers, and, using the PS5's 3D Audio, can deliver quality surround sound.
The next step forward The DualSense is Sony's new controller designed specifically for the PS5. It includes advanced features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, as well as a built-in mic, so you can talk to your friends even without a headset.

PS5 Has Speech Dictation for Fast Messaging
Say it out loud
- by Sammy Barker Thu 15th Oct 2020
Anyone else just hate typing with on-screen keyboards? The PlayStation 4 is pretty good with this stuff, using a mixture of predictive text, gyroscopes, and even the touchpad to speed up the process – but it’s still a frustrating and cumbersome experience overall, isn’t it? The PlayStation 5 will solve that problem with speech dictation .
As you may already know, the DualSense includes a microphone which you can use for voice chat and the abovementioned feature. All you need to do is speak into your controller, and it’ll convert your message to text for you, ready to share on social media or send to friends. This functionality probably won’t be flawless, but it’s a great addition, isn’t it?

😄-Your right it won't be flawless, but it'll cut down on time! Even if I have to correct it a little..lol.
- BowTiesAreCool
holds controller right up to mouth I SAID KETCHUP, NOT CATSUP
@BowTiesAreCool 😂Lmao!🤣 Sounds about right!👈(pun intended)
@RicksReflection I hear ya!
- thefourfoldroot
As long as it’s good enough to enter codes (for characters it should be). That’s all I use the keyboard fir anyway, PSN codes.
Genuinely didn’t consider this great addition!!
I dictate all my messages using voice to text software on my iPhone. Welcome to the 21st-century.
@BowTiesAreCool 😶-We can only hope that the algorithm that they use for speech recognition is smarter than Google's is. Because I hate to have to(REPEATEDLY) and articulately re-pronounce over and over and get absolutely the wrong Sh*t, especially as in, "How the H*ll did that word even come up" it doesn't even remotely sound similar😖?
- Magic_Spoon
Nice simple feature!
Let's hope it can read broad geordie accents.
I hope the dualsense microphone can understand my broken english
This is great. Imagine I can dictate my comments straight in PushSquare. If something goes wrong I can blame Sony typing crap😀
Can’t lie this feature will come in HANDY whilst snacking
- Victor_Meldrew
very hand, It'll probably struggle with some UK accents though
- Truthhurts2
All I can think of with this, is the video of a Scottish woman asking Alexa to play a song and it won't until she uses an English accent 😂
When the guy hit the mic button I thought the controller was going to pick up what he was saying but it didn't.
Speech to text is great when it works.... and then there are times when the message turned into an alien language where the listening device only heard like 3 words.

How To Turn Off Text to Speech On PS5: A Comprehensive Guide
The PlayStation 5 (PS5) is a powerhouse of gaming technology, offering gamers an immersive and interactive experience. One of the features that makes gaming more accessible for a wide range of players is the Text to Speech (TTS) functionality. It can be incredibly useful for gamers with visual impairments or those who simply prefer to have in-game text read aloud. However, there may be instances where you want to turn off TTS on your PS5, either to conserve system resources or to enjoy a more traditional gaming experience.
Don’t worry! In this article, we’ve got you covered with a quick and easy guide on how to turn off text to speech on PS5.
What Is Text to Speech on the PS5?
Text-to-Speech (TTS) on the PS5 is an accessibility feature that converts on-screen text into spoken words, allowing users with visual impairments or those who prefer auditory assistance to interact with the console’s user interface, games, and applications more effectively. TTS technology is a vital tool in making the PS5 more inclusive and accessible.
Why Turn Off Text to Speech on PS5?
While Text to Speech is a valuable accessibility feature, there are several reasons you might want to disable it temporarily or permanently.
- Personal preference
You might prefer to read the text in games and menus rather than having it read aloud.
- Resource conservation
Disabling Text to Speech on PS5 can help free up system resources, potentially improving overall performance.
TTS can be a privacy concern if you’re gaming in a shared space or don’t want others to hear your in-game text.
- Compatibility
Some games and applications may not work well with TTS enabled, so you might need to disable it for specific titles.

The PlayStation 5 begins its global rollout on November 12, and as that date approaches we're finding out more and more about Sony's next-gen system. Speech to text not working PS5
Unfortunately, the only channel speech to text is available is the party chat. I would love for it to be in whispers or even local.
When in a party and clicking on the button, it starts recording, a popup shows up saying that the feature will need to be enabled; when clicking that, the chat minimizes and when reopening and pressing the speech to text button, it says recording over and no output in the party chat. This is even though I have been talking, and visibly, since the party UI shows when you speak.
This is even when I have enabled the feature.
Resetting the game only prompts me to toggle the feature on in settings every second time (even though it is on), and yet, still, no output when the popup does not appear.
I bought a headset to use this feature since the keyboard flow is just as clunky and time-consuming as when not using one. The time to open the keyboard overlay UI through the action menu takes so long that you might as well not bother placing the keyboard on your lap.
Please fix it, and make it available to the local and whisper channels. Preferably have an action menu for voice-to-text chat, the last used chat channel. That would be enjoyable to use, I imagine.
