Film review: girl in woods (2016).

After a tragic accident Grace is lost and alone in the Smoky Mountains. Grace’s struggle for survival is made more complicated by her troubled past. Battling the demons in her mind may be the only way to come out alive.

If you spread out a collection of low budget horror movies in a given space, and you threw a rock into that space, there’s a good chance that the movie the rock lands on will take place in the woods. There are an uncountable number of low budget movies set in wooded areas. It’s an easy location to film in since it is less likely to require permits and there will be fewer distractions. Yet, there are drawbacks to the setting as well. The different locations in the woods all look similar yet distinct at the same time. It can take away from any visual stimulation. The success of a wooded setting depends on the individual movie.

Girl in Woods followed a woman named Grace (Juliet Reeves) who was on a vacation at a cabin with her significant other, Jim (Jeremy London). While Grace and Jim were out in the woods, Jim was shot in the head. Grace could not find her way back to the cabin and spent days walking through the woods, slowly turning feral, and avoiding a monster that was stalking through the woods. Spread throughout the movie were flashbacks and dreams involving Grace’s mom (Charisma Carpenter), dad (Lee Perkins), and grandfather (John Still).

As much as I gripe about movies being set in the woods, there was an important reason for this in Girl in Woods. That reason isn’t the title. The whole concept of the movie was that Grace was lost in the woods and slowly going insane. The location was a factor in her downward spiral. The audience was meant to sympathize with the main character and the location was one of the ways that the movie helped that connection. Having the visuals be confusingly similar, as any spot in a wooded area is, made the movie feel like being lost in the woods. That made the setting forgivable, though woods are generally used too much in low budget horror.

Low budget horror tends to also utilize small casts. In the case of Girl in Woods, most of the movie was spent with Grace. Juliet Reeves put in three performances as her character’s personality was split into three parts. She spent a large amount of time talking to herself in the woods. There were three distinct personalities that Reeves switched between. One of them was fairly good, while the other two were underwhelming. When she was playing helpless, it never quite worked. She made that side of the character a little too childish for the survival story to land. The same could be said for the devil on her shoulder side of her personality. You could see that she wanted to play this kind of character, and it was easy to notice how much fun she had in that role. It wasn’t convincing, though. Reeves was never believable as the darker side of the character. Where she excelled was the in between contemplative personality. It felt real and natural. There was some good in what Reeves was doing. The problem was that she couldn’t make two of the three personalities feel right.

Girl in Woods was a mixed bag when it came to reveals toward the end. It was easy to see most of them coming. Hints were sprinkled throughout the movie. The problem was that they weren’t as impactful as they were meant to be. The reveals should have packed an emotional punch but ended up feeling like nothing. The story could have been better serviced if time was taken build emotional connections. If the characters or situation were fleshed out better, there would have been more investment. It would have made a huge difference.

I’ve said a lot of negative stuff about Girl in Woods . It wasn’t all bad. The movie was watchable. It just leaves no lasting impact. It was a movie and that’s all. Nothing about it will cause me to go back and rewatch it. I won’t be telling friends about the movie and recommending that they seek it out. But if there’s anything positive, it’s that I also won’t be telling people not to see it. There was a decent story that was weakened by setting, performances, and a lack of depth. Girl in Woods was fine. That’s all it was. Fine.

Want to spruce up your horror film? Need to give it that extra added dose of the “oh, shit!” factor? Take your central dynamic, and simply toss ’em in the woods. You don’t necessarily need a paranormal element that resides there; just dump them DEEP in the expansive, lush greens and tall trees, and let them find a way out.

Director Jeremy Benson’s psychological thriller Girl in Woods employs a pretty devious tactic within the film’s first couple of acts, and it works to an excellent result.

Grace (Reeves) is a woman who has faced her share of turmoil in her life, and as the flashbacks would dictate… let’s just say that these aren’t exactly fond memories that anybody would be proud to recollect. Her solace comes from her boyfriend (and real-life husband, Jeremy London), and he concocts a plan to get his love into the woods on a hike and pop the question – what a smoothie he is!

Well, we all know what a bitch Lady Luck can be at times, and she once again rears her ugly head directly into the young couple’s path (more specifically at Grace’s fella), and following the traumatic undertaking, she is left stranded miles from nowhere in the forest and now must find her way back to safety, all while her mind is working double-overtime in a fashion that isn’t conducive to one’s successful reverse-retreat from the lonely coppice. What makes this film so damn entertaining isn’t the notion that we’re hoping for Grace’s safe passage back home in a survival sense, but more of an internal battle with her own mind that has suffered horribly and now works to hinder her from achieving that goal of continuity.

The images are frightening within, and the only thing better than the scares are the performances themselves – both Reeves and London absolutely knocked their roles out of the park on all facets, and Charisma Carpenter adds not only a vital piece of the story’s puzzle, but a seriously eerie portrayal as Grace’s mom – a real win on all casting counts here. There are a few pacing issues with the film, but they’re not hindering in much of a fashion, as the story does roll along at a nice tempo, and Benson delivers a widened-claustrophobic feel with the shots inside of the woods – so much room to move; yet, you feel infinitely boxed in… maybe this is the reason why I don’t go camping.

In any event, I can definitely recommend this film to viewers looking for a scare not only on the upper levels, but in many subsets as well. If you take nothing more out of this film other than to stay the hell out of the woods if you don’t know where you’re going, then I’d say you’ve received the message quite clearly.

girl in the woods movie review 2016

Welcome witches and warlocks,

Today I was able to review the survival horror movie Girl in Woods (2016) by writer/director Jeremy Benson.  Since it does not spoil anything too major, I will let IMDb describe the general plot for me:

“After a tragic accident, Grace is lost and alone in the Smoky Mountains.  Grace’s struggle for survival is made more complicated by her troubled past.  Battling the demons in her mind may be the only way to come out alive.”

Four days before I saw this feature I was actually in the Smoky Mountains; so I watched this hoping to see the beauty of the range on display.  To an extent, that majesty was captured, but it was also used to show the intimidating remoteness of the Smokies.  The idea of getting lost in the mountains is scary enough, but the idea of it psychologically unraveling a person is what adds a unique twist to this survival horror movie.

The head games that the movie plays with both the lead actress and the audience set this apart from many similar horror features.  The line between reality and fantasy is often blurred leaving us to wonder what is within her head vs. what has actually occurred or is occurring.  This sense of uncertainty was so convincingly pulled off that I was not sure whether or not one of the major scenes in the feature has even occurred in the first place.

Luckily, the lead actress was strong enough to portray the delicate mental state of her character.  For the most part her range was quite good which was important given that this is a mostly one woman show.  I will admit, there were a few stumbles in the acting, but for the most part the people present felt natural enough that it only intensified the terror of the situation.

To be quite honest, though, this feature is not so much scary as disorienting and atmospheric. There were no real jump scares nor much in the way of the creepy creature moments that comprise what we would normally expect from a horror feature.  That being said, it does make up for its lack of frights with its off kilter storyline that keeps the audience as in the dark as the protagonist.

All in all, this dark psychological survival thriller does have some weaknesses, but the neat twists and structure kept me engaged throughout the feature.

Nighty nightmares, – The Creeping Craig

**Note: Girl in Woods will be released on June 3rd to rent or own on Comcast, DirecTV, iTunes, Dish, Amazon Instant, Google Play, Vudu and more.

girl in the woods movie review 2016

Grace (Juliet Reeves) and her boyfriend, Jim (Jeremy London), head to a remote cabin where he plans on popping the question. After he does, the newly engaged couple goes for a stroll through the woods. An accident occurs and Grace goes astray under the verdure canopy of Mother Nature. Simply, the movie is a about a girl lost in a lush forest. On a more complex and analytical level, Girl in Woods delves into a woman's mental and physical breakdown, as her past haunts her evermore so in this isolated state.

The viewing experience will be different for all, no matter what film is on the screen. If an Asylum flick, like 3-Headed Shark Attack , is your idea of a good 90 minutes spent, then Girl in Woods may not be for you. If nitpicking is your thing, maybe skip this one – it isn’t perfect, but it’s pretty damn good. Girl in Woods definitely falls into the slow-burn, psycho-thriller realm. Not everyone will enjoy this movie and a vast amount of viewers will not want to see an actor dominate the screen time and/or take on a multipart role; Juliet Reeves is the leading lady, playing three versions of Grace.

Basically, Grace has the angel and devil shoulders. The trio battle during her decent through moments of conciseness and temptation. This interestingly used plot device works, but at times gets clunky in the writing and execution by Reeves. For the most part, she is not an awful actress, by any means. The problem lies in monotonous, generic writing during specific scenes when Grace is talking to herself. At times this detracts from the believability, especially when she is painstakingly enduring hunger and strife, but then a flashback to her childhood occurs and the pursuit for survival continues.

girl in the woods movie review 2016

Interspersed throughout her grueling experience are flashbacks and dream sequences about Grace’s childhood. Her mother (Charisma Carpenter), father (Lee Perkins) and grandfather (John Still) are recurring characters, unraveling to us who Grace really is. This works to a point, but unfortunately happens way too often. Carpenter and Perkins add to the creep-factor, as there are some amusingly haunting scenes with Grace’s parents, and ironically, scenes depicting grace with her grandfather.

An important scene in the beginning shows Grace leaving an unidentified medication at the cabin. This alludes to the cognitive undertaking she must endure presently, along with suffering childhood trauma. As time passes in the film, her physical and mental well-being deteriorates, showing to what ends a human will go to in order for survival in dire straits and the complexity of cognition and psyche.

girl in the woods movie review 2016

Helping to hold Girl in Woods together is the authenticity from filming on location in an actual forest. This set choice becomes the crust around the bread, keeping the rest airy and soft. Overhead shots of the full-of-green treetops occur every once in a while, reminding viewers of the enormous terrain she is lost in. The sounds of birds chirping, water flowing and sticks cracking when she walks, in tandem with a haunting score, add quality detail to the genuine depiction of the woods. When there are no sounds and we’re presented with darkness, silence takes over the scene and adds to the tension.

A beautifully filmed feature from writer and director Jeremy Benson, Girl in Woods is attention-grabbing psychological horror. Although there are parts of the film which leave viewers with questions and nitpicks, in the end the negative factors can be overlooked and do not detract from the essence of this film. It contains many aspects for analysis, especially from a psychological standpoint. This one lurked inside my cranium for days, and it leaves inquiry for discussion. Over three acts, the film kept its hooks lodged to the mystery, especially in the third, and best, act. A strong finale wraps the film up solidly, leaving some ambiguity and room for an epilogue-like sequel.

Across the entirety of Girl in Woods, you get the feeling Jeremy Benson’s movie should have in reality ended up a short film. Such economy would perhaps have allowed for a conceptual punch even just over eighty minutes is too long to deliver, with a central concept that while sounds interesting on paper is scuppered by a poor script and utterly leaden pacing. In essence, Benson’s story is the creation of an urban legend, the origin tale of a later horror picture we haven’t yet seen, but that’s not necessarily immediately apparent; much of the picture follows around Juliet Reeves’ Grace, the eponymous girl in woods who witnesses the tragic death of her fiancée (Jeremy London) and subsequently becomes lost…

Grace has mental issues and a horrible, complicated family history. Now she's out in the woods alone, low on food, disoriented with only her shocking memories to keep her company. The actress involved gives herself admirably to the role, she's not Meryl Streep but so what? It's a pretty good psychological horror film. It's a little rough around its edges but chalk it up to inexperience. Mantained my interest so that's good.

I mostly watched this movie because the Chiller description made it sound just like the book The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon,a book I personally think is unfilmable.and while the actual film is nothing like it,it still,um,proved me right.the acting is awful, the dialogue is nonsensical, and while I did slightly like the twist ending-although the "mental illness=violent" trope needs to die-the whole movie is just so poorly made and slow that it ruins any potential enjoyment.

Review by Brooke Kamishlian

A young woman with a history of severe mental problems has been brought on a weekend trip to a secluded cabin by her boyfriend who proposes and takes her on a romantic hike deep into the gorgeous woods where he promptly shoots himself in the face by accident and dies, leaving a less distraught than she probably should be finance alone and lost without her anti-psychotic medication or food. This all happens within the first ten minutes of the film, the rest of the thankfully short runtime is spent following the woman aimlessly around the woods as her mind completely unravels. This is obviously an attempt at presenting an origin story for an urban legend. To that end this movie…

Girl In Woods [Review]

' src=

Grace’s grip on reality seems precarious at best, due to a traumatic childhood, so naturally her fiancé decides what she needs is a getaway deep, deep in the woods.  After a freak accident, poor Grace is left alone without so much as a phone signal or compass to find her way back to civilization.  As if surviving alone, lost in the wilderness isn’t enough to contend with, Grace must battle her inner demons as well if she wants to make it out alive.

Writer/director Jeremy Benson merges survival thriller with psychological thriller in a familiar horror setting.  Neither Grace nor her fiancé seem capable of handling so much as a short hike in a park, so it’s no surprise that things derail so fast. So quickly that we never even have time to get to know the pair, save for that Grace is on medication and has nightmares about witnessing her father’s suicide as a child.  Her childhood is slowly revealed via dream sequences within dream sequences as her situation grows dangerous.

It’s an origin story, of sorts, that dangles the idea of a potential gory franchise just out of reach.

From a survival thriller standpoint, the film fails.  While it establishes early on that Grace relied on her fiancé to get her through the woods and back safely, it quickly becomes frustrating to watch Grace make the most illogical of choices.  The moment the freak accident leaves Grace to fend for herself, she wastes no time to grieve and immediately wanders off further into the woods.  She uses a stream as a guide, and temporary water source, but she then abandons that in favor of less obvious landmarks. This, in turn, causes her to wind up back at the scene of the accident. Though par for the course in this type of film, Grace routinely finds herself back at the origin point again and again, no matter what she tries to alter her direction. Sometimes it seems as though she’s routinely thwarting her own attempts just to end up back where she started. Which makes sense, given the psychological aspect, but it becomes tedious to watch.

Peppered in throughout Grace’s wandering are her nightmares about her past, giving us insight as to the childhood that shaped Grace’s psyche.  It’s the nightmare sequences featuring Charisma Carpenter as Grace’s mother and Lee Perkins as Grace’s father that are the most interesting; teasing just a little bit more backstory each time until a less than impressive reveal.  Actress Juliet Reeves channels her inner Sheri Moon Zombie. As she gets more comfortable in her role, the further Grace’s mental state deteriorates–but her performance isn’t strong enough to counter balance the exposition heavy and often cheesy dialogue. Scenes that see Grace conversing with two opposite versions of herself, an overt manifestation of her conscience, feel heavy handed. When Grace isn’t talking to herself or having nightmarish flashbacks, she’s hot on the heels of a creature straight out of The Descent .  It’s bogged down by the tedium of Grace’s poor attempts at survival, however.

On a survival thriller aspect, the film fails.

At its core, Girl in Woods poses an interesting concept.  It’s an origin story, of sorts, that dangles the idea of a potential gory franchise just out of reach.  Unfortunately,  there’s not enough of an arch to sell Grace’s story, which is further hindered by the film’s clumsy dialogue.  Instead of a slow psychological break, we’re left with a character that cracks almost from the opening credits, leaving the setting irrelevant and stripping the story of any sense of authentic emotional depth.  Though it’s obvious Reeves revels in her role, it’s not enough to keep Grace engaging.  The bloody climax is enough to forgive some of the flaws and almost makes you wish Benson skipped ahead straight to the sequel. That said, considering that this doesn’t tread any new ground and is riddled with plot holes, it’s probably best to leave Grace’s story behind in the woods.

Girl in Woods will be available on VOD this Friday, June 3rd, 2016.

To make matters worse, she is also faced with various challenges, including injuries, hunger, and extreme weather conditions. However, amidst all these difficulties, Grace is forced to confront her inner demons and find a way out of the woods.

The movie is a mix of survival and psychological thriller, with a strong focus on character development. The film gradually introduces us to Grace's past and her struggles with mental health, and we see her battle these issues throughout the movie. Carpenter does a commendable job of portraying the character, and her performance is intense and convincing. Reeves London and Jeremy London offer solid support as Maddie and Lucas, respectively.

One of the most notable aspects of the movie is its stunning visuals. The movie was shot on location in the forests of North Carolina, and the cinematography captures the beauty of the wilderness perfectly. However, the movie also manages to evoke a sense of foreboding and danger, thanks to its excellent use of lighting and sound effects.

The film's director, Jeremy Benson, deserves praise for his handling of the movie's dual genres. He strikes a fine balance between the survival and psychological aspects of the story, and manages to keep the audience engaged throughout the movie. The pacing of the film is just right, with enough tension and suspense to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

In conclusion, Girl in Woods is a well-made thriller that offers a unique perspective on the traditional survival genre. The movie explores themes of trauma, mental health, and self-discovery, and does so with sensitivity and maturity. Carpenter delivers a standout performance, and the movie's visuals and direction are equally impressive. If you're a fan of survival thrillers or psychological drama, this movie is definitely worth a watch.
