  • Area is the amount of space that is inside a shape.
  • Because it is an amount of space, it has to be measured in squares.
  • If the shape is measured in cm, then the area would be measured in square cm or cm 2

Area of a Rectangle

  • If you are measuring the area of a rectangle, then the area will equal the length multiplied by the width.
  • Or Area of a rectangle = length x width.
  • We can also write this as A = l x w or A = lw, where A is the area, l is the length and w is the width.
  • The area of the rectangle below is 5 x 3 = 15 squares.

Area of Rectilinear Shapes Worksheets

A rectilinear shape is a shape made out of two or more rectangles.

You find the area by splitting the shape up into rectangles and then finding the area of each rectangle and adding them together.

Sheet 1 is a simple sheet that just involves counting squares (3rd grade)

Sheets 2 and 3 involve splitting the shapes into rectangles and finding the area of each one.

Sheets 4 and 5 are the same but use simple fractions and decimals.
