How to Give

  • Giving Opportunities

Finance PhD Program Fund (FPPF)

This project was created in honor of Dr. Arun J. Prakash. The purpose of this project is for the enrichment of the PhD in Business Administration Program (Finance Concentration) at FIU’s Chapman Graduate School of Business.

The mission of the Association is to develop and maintain networks by connecting alumni, faculty, and friends, who support each other, and work towards mutually beneficial activities while building the brand and reputation of FIU’s PhD in Finance alumni and students.

The mission is accomplished by events and activities like the Annual Student/Alumni Colloquium, featuring research projects that focus on topics of importance and relevance to the theoretical and empirical issues in Finance. Top researchers in the field will be compensated for their in-depth reviews and feedback.

The mission is also embodied in the Alumni Association’s commitment to recognize outstanding students, faculty, alumni and alumni volunteers through its award programs.

Cost & aid.

FIU is dedicated to keeping higher education accessible to all. That’s why our financial aid office awards more than $180 million in financial aid each year. If you want a degree that lets you graduate with little to no debt and start your career sooner, FIU can help you make that happen.

FIU is consistently ranked in Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine's “100 Best Values in Public Colleges.” Our students pay less tuition up front and carry less debt after graduation than the national average.

More Opportunity

Miami is filled with thriving industries like finance, travel and hospitality, healthcare, logistics,  creative design, technology and more; all looking to employ grads and students. In fact, 71% of FIU grads are employed or enrolled in master's programs one year after graduation.

Estimate Your Costs

FIU’s low tuition could be even lower for you if you qualify for financial aid. Calculate how much you could be paying in tuition and fees and then estimate how much aid you could receive in return.

Florida residents$205.57$455.64
Out-of-state students$618.87$1,001.69

*Additional fees (Athletic, Health, Parking, Online, etc.) may be applied to an account based on student's program and/or enrollment status. **Tuition and fees vary for some graduate programs, the  College of Law and the  College of Medicine . Check the program or college's website to verify tuition costs.

Qualifying for Financial Aid

Most students don’t pay the full cost of their tuition alone. About 89% of full-time undergraduate students at FIU receive some type of aid.

Financial aid can be broken into two groups: need-based and merit-based. Need-based is determined by your financial situation as calculated by your FAFSA application. Merit-based is determined by your test scores, GPA and other factors such as essays or achievements. Explore your options:

FAFSA: Your Key to Financial Aid

Completing your FAFSA application is the key to keeping your tuition costs low. You’ll need to apply for FAFSA every year to receive certain federal, state and FIU financial aid. The application is free so even if you aren’t sure if you qualify, you should apply. FAFSA opens October 1. Early award priority date is December 1.

Submit the FAFSA

Our Golden Promise

FIU is dedicated to creating opportunity for students regardless of their financial situation. That’s why our Golden Promise is to cover 100% tuition and fees for first-time-in-college Florida students with a 0 expected family contribution. Just submit the FAFSA to qualify.

Graduate Student Aid

Fellowships and assistantships are a great way to fund your studies while conducting research or performing other professional development responsibilities. These opportunities are offered through your program of study and in coordination with the University Graduate School. To find out more, contact your graduate program director. Competitive graduate scholarships are also available to students who enroll full time.

Graduate Funding

Other Types of Aid

College loans include subsidized student loans (the government pays your interest while you're in school) and unsubsidized student loans, which means the interest is added to the balance while you are enrolled in school. It's ideal if you can pay off the interest as it is added throughout your college career.

Learn more about Loans

Grants do not need to be repaid. Most are based on your financial need, though some also take into consideration factors like residency, such as the Florida Resident Access Grant for Florida residents who are seeking their first college degree and meet GPA requirements. To be considered for any grant, you must complete the FAFSA.

If you show financial need, a work study can help you to pay for a portion of your educational expenses through employment both on and off campus.

Fall 2025 Application Deadlines: December 10, 2024 : Priority deadline to be considered for all possible fellowships . February 1, 2025 : Regular fall admission and to be considered for graduate assistantships .

Dear Prospective Ph.D. student,

Thank you for your interest in the   Ph.D. program in Public Affairs   at FIU. Our Ph.D. program equips you with critical thinking and research capacity on urban and comparative international governance issues. It broadly encompasses public administration, management, policy, and service and prepares you for research and analytic positions in universities, public agencies, and nonprofit organizations. Please see below for an overview of the admissions process as well as more information about the program's curriculum and requirements.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have further questions.

Alexander Kroll, Ph.D. Associate Professor and PhD Program Director Email: [email protected]

Applicants should generally have a Master’s degree prior to their enrollment, though outstanding applicants with only a baccalaureate degree may also be considered. Admission is not restricted to students with prior course work in Public Administration. The program encourages applicants with diverse academic backgrounds, with preference given to those with grounding in the policy or administrative sciences. Applicants should ideally demonstrate knowledge of American political institutions and fundamentals of social research methods.

If you are interested in applying to the Ph.D. program please visit   FIU's Graduate Admissions website   to complete the online application.

For international students interested in applying to the Ph.D. program, please visit FIU's International Graduate Admissions website for additional information and resources related to the application process and document requirements .

The application materials required are as follows:

  • FIU Application for Doctoral Programs (completed online).
  • Official transcripts and evaluations or translations of transcripts by a NACES member credential evaluation service for international applicants (where appropriate). Applicants must demonstrate excellence in prior academic work by an earned GPA of 3.25 or better in either the undergraduate or the graduate degree from regionally accredited institutions.
  • A personal statement describing the applicant’s background, career goals, and reasons for pursuing a Ph.D. in Public Affairs; the statement should also indicate how the applicant’s research and career interests fit with those of current faculty. Please indicate in your statement whether you intend to enroll as a full-time or part-time student.
  • A current resume.
  • Three references using the Graduate Admission's recommendation form included in the   graduate application ; two references should preferably be from academics. At least one writing sample.
  •  At least one writing sample.
  • The GRE is NOT required.

Students are generally admitted only for the Fall term. Although the FIU online application system allows for other semesters, the Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs does not encourage such admission. Spring or Summer admissions will only be considered under special circumstances. All applicants will be required to complete an interview with the Public Affairs Ph.D. Committee during the admissions process. Virtual Interviews will be arranged for applicants where appropriate. Foreign applicants must demonstrate proficiency in the English language by presenting a minimum score of a 100 on the TOEFL iBT, which is equivalent to 600 on the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL PBT). If applicants take the language proficiency assessment administered by the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), a minimum score of 7.0 is desirable. Please review the Enlish-Language Proficiency requirements carefully.

To fulfill the Ph.D. degree in Public Affairs, admitted students must complete at least 63 credit hours beyond the Master’s degree or its equivalent (75 total credits). Admitted students may transfer a maximum of 12 semester credits from other institutions towards Ph.D. degree requirements, subject to the approval of the Ph.D. Program Committee. The credit hours include 48 hours of approved course work (including comprehensive examination) and 15 hours of dissertation work after admission to candidacy. In addition, there is a residency requirement of at least 18 semester hours in three consecutive semesters of study during the first year of enrollment, and a minimum of six hours in all subsequent semesters. Successful completion of course work and passing scores on the comprehensive examination are required in order for students to advance to Ph.D. candidacy and present a dissertation proposal. Students are advised to consult the doctoral program handbook for any additional information regarding benchmarks for student progress in grade point average, course completion, comprehensive examinations, and dissertation work.

Upon starting the program, students are assigned a faculty advisor who is a full-time faculty member, possibly relevant to the student’s area of research interest. When completing all coursework, students must demonstrate competence in the following areas: American political economy, advanced statistical and qualitative research methods, international development administration, organizational theory and design, and local economic development and urban management. The Program Director may assign specific coursework to students with deficiencies in any of the above-mentioned areas.

Program of Study (Public Affairs)

The Ph.D. program in Public Affairs is a 63 credit hours program (beyond a master's degree). Of this, 48 hours are for coursework as follows: seven principal core courses (21 credit hours), two flexible core courses (6 credit hours), five specialization elective courses (15 credit hours), and a comprehensive examination (six credit hours). The remaining 15 credit hours are for Ph.D. dissertation work. Students are provided a Program Planning Sheet for tracking degree progress.

Principal Core Curriculum (21 credits)

  • PAD 7277 Public Administration and the American Political Economy
  • PAD 7155 Organizational Development and Change in Public and Nonprofit Organizations
  • PAD 7703C Empirical Methods in Public Administration
  • PAD 7705 Applied Quantitative Analysis I
  • PAD 7707 Applied Quantitative Analysis II
  • PAD 7055 Scope and Theory of Public Administration
  • URS 7156 Research Practicum

Flexible Core Courses (6 credits)

  • PAD 7808 Economic Development and Urban Management
  • PAD 7865 Development Administration
  • PAF 7002 Foundations of Policy Analysis
  • URS 7644 Managing Public Financial Resources
  • URS 7380 Contemporary Management Issues and Problems

Specialization Courses (15 credits)

Students are required to take five courses in an area of specialization to be designed with the advisor. Six of these courses must be at the 5000, 6000, or 7000 level and may be taken within the University. These specialization electives may also be especially designed courses developed in conjunction with the student’s faculty advisor and with approval of the Ph.D. Director. Specialization areas may include subfields within the realm of public affairs (e.g., public budgeting and financing, human resource management; local government policies, urban management, international and comparative public administration, etc.) or may involve cognate disciplines (such as health services administration, criminal justice administration, environmental management, etc.). At least three hours must be URS 7926 (Supervised Readings). In developing a specialization and program of studies, a student may consult with the faculty advisor, appropriate faculty members in public administration, as well as others related to the student’s area of interest. If the student’s principal area of interest is in a cognate discipline outside of the Department of Public Administration, the student and Ph.D. Director should consult with appropriate faculty in designing the program of studies. With the help of the Ph.D. Director, the student is required to identify an appropriate Ph.D. Dissertation Committee Chair and Co-Chair (if required), both of whom may or may not be the same as the faculty advisor. The Chair or Co-Chair should have substantive expertise in the student’s area of research interest. The Chair must be a faculty member with Dissertation Advisor Status.

Comprehensive Examination (6 credits)

Subsequent to completion of course work, students are required to pass a three-part comprehensive examination. The first component is a one-day long written examination testing for knowledge of the Ph.D. core and related materials. The second component is a research proposal that will form the basis of the student’s dissertation work. Students’ are required to consult with their dissertation chair (and committee) about their proposal. A faculty committee reviews both the written examination and the research proposal. The third component is the face-to-face oral examination with the faculty committee. In the oral exam, the committee would seek clarifications and further explanations about the answers. The student will then get a passing or failing grade in the overall comprehensive examination from the committee.

If the student passes, s/he can move forward with the dissertation. S/he should then submit the University Graduate School’s D-2 form (Program for Doctoral Degree and Application for Candidacy).  A student who fails the examination on the first attempt must retake the examination at its next offering. If a student fails the examination twice, s/he will be automatically dismissed from the program in accordance with general FIU policy.

Dissertation (15 credits)

Upon successful completion of the comprehensive examination, a student should select their Ph.D. Dissertation Committee with the help of their Ph.D. Dissertation Committee Chair. The student should then finalize their dissertation proposal in consultation with the Committee. Students are expected to defend their dissertation prospectus before the end of the first semester subsequent to passing the Comprehensive Examination. Upon the public defense and approval of the proposal, the student will initiate formal work on the dissertation. Students should contact FIU’s Institutional Review Board to ensure that their research meets the protocol for human subjects research before initiating their fieldwork. Then, the student is expected to make appropriate progress toward completing the dissertation, and to enroll continually (at least three credits per semester) until the degree is completed. Upon completion of the dissertation, the student should formally defend the research at a meeting conducted by the Ph.D. Dissertation Committee. The Ph.D. in Public Affairs degree will be awarded upon a positive recommendation of the Committee and compliance with all policies and procedures required by the University.

Award of Master’s Degree en route to Ph.D. Candidates: Under certain circumstances, students directly admitted into the Ph.D. program following completion of their bachelor’s degree, may be awarded a master’s degree in public administration. To be eligible, a student must satisfy the core requirements in the MPA program. Upon certification by the student’s faculty advisor that this requirement has been met, the MPA Director will approve the award of the master’s degree. Generally, the en route Master’s degree is given after passing the comprehensive examinations.

Cost of Attendance

The cost of attending the Ph.D. program at FIU depends on whether you are a Florida resident or not. Florida residents have to pay lower tuition costs as compared to non-Florida residents. You must also take into account the living expenses, if you are coming from out of the state. The Graduate Tuition and Fees for the Academic Year 2022-23 are as follows: the tuition per credit hour is $455.64 for Florida residents, and $1,001.69 for non-Florida residents. A full time student would take 9 credit hours during Fall and Spring semesters, and 6 credit hours during Summer semester. There are additional fees for photo ID, health, athletic, and parking which total $885.60 during Fall, $875.60 in the Spring, and $642.41 during Summer. A photo ID fee of $10 is charged in Fall semester. The total tuition and fees cost for the year would be $13,338.97 for Florida residents, and $26,444.17 for out of state students. International students would normally be assessed the out of state tuition fees. The total costs for full time international students (with out of state tuition rates) is estimated in the FIU’s Declaration and Certification of Finances Form.

  Program Requirements

Prerequisites.

All Finance doctoral students must complete graduate level courses in Investments, Econometrics, and Statistics, and undergraduate level courses in Calculus I, Calculus II, Linear Algebra, and Mathematical Economics.  The Finance doctoral adviser and the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs must approve course selections to meet the above requirements.

MAJOR  REQUIREMENTS

All Finance doctoral students must complete courses in three areas: Tools for Analytical Research (TAR), Primary Finance and Support.

I. Tools for Analytical Research (TAR) Area

Students typically take a selection of analytical-tool courses that provide the tools and skills necessary to understand and conduct research in finance.

Students must take the following three TAR courses:

  • ECO 5403 Static Optimization
  • ECO 5416 Econometrics I
  • ECO 5423 Econometric Theory

Plus two additional quantitative courses in Statistics, or Economics numbered 5000 and above with the approval of the primary area adviser.

II. Primary Finance Coursework

The primary area courses and seminars provide opportunities for in-depth study. In addition to the Economics requirement in the TAR area, Finance students are required to take graduate courses in micro- or macro-economics. The selection of these courses is subject to the approval of the primary area adviser.

The doctoral primary area in Finance covers the foundations and theories of finance. Finance students must take the following doctoral seminars and courses:

  • FIN 6449 Doctoral Seminar in Corporate Finance
  • FIN 6527 Doctoral Seminar in Investments - Finance and Investments
  • FIN 6804 Foundations of Financial Theory I
  • FIN 5935 Foundations of Financial Theory II
  • FIN 6842 Empirical Research in Finance
  • FIN TBD - Supervised Research/Directed Individual Study in Finance (number of courses and topics vary)
  • TBD - One elective approved by the doctoral adviser

The requirement for an elective course, chosen in consultation with the Finance program director, is designed to allow some minimum specialization by students. As some examples, this course could be a multinational finance course, a financial institutions course, an economics course or an additional quantitative course. In addition to these regularly scheduled seminars, the Finance Workshop meets periodically to share the results of recent research conducted by FSU faculty and doctoral students and by invited scholars from other universities. Finance Doctoral students are required to attend the Finance Workshop seminars.

In addition to these courses, first- and second-year students will participate in a professional development series that will be an additional registered course in each semester of the first two years of the program. The development series is designed to introduce doctoral students to the roles and responsibilities of faculty members, including research ethics, communication with faculty at other universities, the research review process, balancing research, teaching and service, among other topics.

There is also a requirement that each student complete a research paper. This paper is based on independent research by the student, primarily during the second year of the program, and under the supervision of two faculty members. The research project is undertaken in the student’s area of interest to facilitate development toward his/her dissertation. The project culminates with the student presenting the research results to the finance faculty. Students must complete their research paper prior to taking the finance preliminary examination.

III. Support Area Coursework

Finance doctoral students typically choose a Support Area in econometrics. Normally, four courses are required in the Support Area.  In addition, at least two of the courses required in the Support Area cannot be used to satisfy other requirements.

  Residency Information

The doctoral program is a full-time program that lasts four to five years. Students should plan to live in the Tallahassee area year-round, including summers. Our program is not set up for individuals who wish to take courses part time or online.

  Financial Assistance

The College of Business awards financial assistance to applicants based on academic criteria and performance. The goal of the college is to provide assistantships and/or fellowships to all of our admitted doctoral students, subject to overall enrollment and fiscal limitations. Most doctoral students who request funding, who maintain a satisfactory level of academic and work performance, and who are in residence receive financial assistance from the college. Annual stipends and supplementary assistance such as travel expenses for conference attendance will vary among cohorts and programs. Students who are not Florida residents should note that tuition waivers associated with assistantships only cover the out-of-state portion of their tuition for year one of the program. Out-of-state tuition waivers are generally not available for years two through five.   Doctoral students on assistantship are supported for four full academic years, contingent upon satisfactory performance in the program. Eligibility for fifth-year support is considered for a student having made substantial progress toward placement at a research-oriented university. For a full list of Florida State University funding and awards, visit gradschool.fsu.edu . Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit all completed application materials before January 15 to be eligible for additional funding opportunities at the university level.

Fall 2024 aid, five steps to ensure you receive your fall term financial aid.

Step 1:  Enroll for at least a half-time credit hour load (six hours for undergraduates, four hours for graduate students; waitlisted courses do not count toward your total enrollment ). To receive all of the aid offered, you must have full-time enrollment by the Drop/Add deadline (Sept. 16) .

Step 2:  Double-check your document status to be sure you have submitted all required materials. If asked for follow-up documents, find the list on Wolverine Access.

Step 3:  Complete and sign a Master Promissory Note for federal loans on the Federal Student Aid website if you are a first-time Direct Loan borrower or Grad PLUS borrower at U-M.

Step 4:  Complete loan entrance counseling on the Federal Student Aid website if you are a first-time Direct Loan borrower or Grad PLUS borrower at U-M.

Step 5:  Be sure to resolve any academic or financial holds that have impacted your ability to enroll for the fall semester.

Once all of the above items, as applicable, are met, your aid funds will be released and applied to tuition, fees, and housing charges on your student account.

Excess funds will either be:

  • Directly deposited to your bank account. To sign up for direct deposit, or verify your bank account information, log in to the Student Business section of Wolverine Access > Payroll and Compensation > Direct Deposit. To view deposits, select “View Checks.” Do this as soon as possible to ensure payment.
  • A check will be mailed to your current (local) address listed on Wolverine Access. If no current address is listed, the check will go to the permanent address on file.

Note: Because some aid covers only tuition (not orientation charges, phone bills, lost ID fees, etc.), you could receive a refund when there are outstanding charges on your student account. You are responsible for paying the balance on your account even after you receive a financial aid refund.

Did You Know?

  • Some aid programs require full-time enrollment, while others may be reduced for less than full-time attendance.
  • It’s not enough to enroll in courses. You must participate to be eligible for financial aid.
  • Students must report additional scholarships, departmental funding, Michigan Education Trust, or veterans’ benefits not already on notices that may affect aid.

Understanding Your Bill

To find your bill on Wolverine Access:

  • Visit Wolverine Access
  • To see your charges in detail, select "Account Inquiry" from your Student Center.

The Charges Due  section shows a running total of your charges by due date. You may view individual bills by clicking on the invoice number in the Invoices Due section.

Because bills are issued before financial aid funds for fall term are credited to student accounts, a special item called Pending Aid  is displayed on the bill. This is the amount of financial aid the university expects to credit to your account based on the financial aid notice. It is a snapshot in time and does not change.

The  Amount Due  section shows the total amount owed before Pending Aid is included. If you are enrolled at least half-time, have signed your federal loan documents, and have completed the requirements to receive fall aid, Pending Aid will appear on your bill and be subtracted from your charges.

How Much Do I Owe?

If you have pending aid on your bill, take the Amount Due  at the top of the bill and manually subtract your Pending Aid . This is what you owe by Aug. 31, 2024. But keep in mind:

  • Pending aid is the amount of aid you were expected to receive when the bill was issued. If you have received aid since then, it will appear on your Wolverine Access Account Summary page. (Additional funds may affect the amount of your aid.) Subtract this amount from your charges to determine the balance due or use the bill estimator on Wolverine Access to calculate it.
  • Graduate student instructor/RA tuition waivers, private and PLUS loans, and third-party credits and private scholarships will not appear as pending aid. They are credited when funds are received. If they have not appeared by the time you pay your bill, pay the amount due on your bill to avoid a late fee. After funds are applied, your monthly bill will contain a credit.
  • Disbursement of aid to students’ accounts will begin on or about Aug. 19 for the fall 2024 term. When funds are credited, pending aid items will be removed. Initial aid refunds will be issued to students Aug. 22.

Did You Receive a Private Scholarship?

  • Checks sent to U-M are applied to the student account, half for fall and half for winter, unless otherwise specified.
  • If a check is sent to the student but made out to U-M, submit it to us for processing. Checks can be submitted in person at the Scholarship Materials Dropbox, located in the second floor lobby of the Student Activities Building.
  • If a check is sent to the student and is copayable to the student and U-M, endorse and submit it.
  • If a check is sent and made payable to a student, report this to us and apply funds to your student account.
  • Private scholarship providers may submit scholarship payments electronically. You might consider sharing the instructions with your provider.

Note:  Always include your UMID on submitted payments.

Return on investment of an FIU MBA degree ranks top 10 in the country

By Cynthia Corzo

August 9, 2024 at 10:25am

The return on investment (ROI) of an FIU Business MBA ranks in the Top 10 among schools nationwide, according to the latest Bloomberg’s Business School ROI Calculator report.

The 2024-2025 report determined a master’s degree from FIU’s School of Business will deliver a 17.7% ROI annually on a student’s investment, which includes tuition, room and board and other living and school expenses.

“Our success is that we’re focused on our students, the quality of our programs and their career opportunities,” said William Hardin, dean of FIU Business. “We’re not doing rocket science. We’re just focused on our students.”

According to Bloomberg’s report, the median ROI for all schools is 12.7%. These are based on Bloomberg Businessweek’s Best B-Schools ranking surveys of people who attended 77 different MBA programs in the U.S. and graduated in 2014 through 2023.

Built on the data reported to Bloomberg from surveys distributed to alumni for the publication’s annual rankings, the calculator is designed to help students determine whether pursuing an MBA is financially viable. It also helps students as they try to decide which are the best choices available to them among U.S.-based, full-time MBA programs.

The Bloomberg Businessweek return-on-investment tool for business schools relies on a standard calculation for measuring financial success: profit relative to initial principal.

Calculating the investment included:

  • Tuition, room, board and any other living expenses while out of the full-time workforce.
  • Forgone income over the months spent attending school and any additional time out of the full-time workforce, based on pre-MBA salary, minus any money earned while at school from internships or other jobs.
  • Interest on any student loans for their full term (usually 10 years).

Determining gross returns included:

  • The difference between post-MBA and pre-MBA salaries for the 10 years after graduation.
  • The value of any signing bonus after being invested for 10 years.

Financing Your Education Planning for your future

Financial aid is intended to help you finance your education when family and personal resources are not adequate to meet your total educational costs. Financial aid is available in the form of scholarships, grants, and loans.

The Ohio State University College of Social Work offers a very competitive tuition rate. Ohio residents and online students, even those outside of Ohio, pay in-state tuition, which is  $6,570 per semester  for a full-time student (8-18 credit hours). On campus, out-of-state students pay out-of-state tuition rates.

Master of Social Work students have the option of being full-time or part-time students. A student taking between 8-18 credit hours a semester is considered full time. Anything under eight credit hours a semester is considered part time. Keep in mind, eight credit hours costs the same as 18 credit hours, even if you are a part-time student who is taking 8 or 9 hours.
