The Best Structure for Cover Letter Example for OJT

When it comes to applying for an On-the-Job Training (OJT), a compelling cover letter can significantly improve your chances of getting accepted by your ideal employer. This document serves as your first impression, allowing you to showcase your skills, achievements, and passion while applying for a training position. However, writing an effective cover letter can be challenging, especially if you’re unsure of its structure. In this guide, we’ll outline the best structure for a cover letter example for OJT.

Your cover letter should begin with a header, which includes important details such as your full name, contact information, and the date. It’s also essential to include the hiring manager’s name, position, company name, and address. This information helps to personalize your letter and also ensures it’s delivered to the intended recipient.

Address the hiring manager professionally by using their name and title. If you’re unsure of who to address, try to find their name from the organization’s website, or contact the organization to ask for the name of the hiring manager. Avoid using generic salutations like ‘To Whom It May Concern’ as they can make your letter look generic.

Opening paragraph

In the opening paragraph, introduce yourself and your intent for writing the letter. Explain why you’re interested in the OJT position and how you found out about it. You can also mention what you know about the organization, its culture, and what excites you about this opportunity. This paragraph sets the tone for the entire letter, and thus, it should grab the recruiter’s attention and entice them to continue reading.

Body paragraphs

The body paragraphs should take up most of the space in your letter. Use them to highlight your skills, experiences, and relevant achievements. Use bullet points to highlight your achievements or skills, where appropriate. The body paragraphs should also show your knowledge of the job’s responsibilities and explain how your skills match the job requirements. The best way to achieve this is to show how your experiences align with the job description.

Closing paragraph

Your closing paragraph is your chance to summarize your intent and express enthusiasm for the position. You can also mention that you’re available for an interview, and your contact information. Thank the recruiter for reading your letter, and express your excitement at the prospect of meeting them to discuss the opening in more detail.

End your letter with a professional sign-off such as ‘Sincerely’ or ‘Best regards’ and add your full name and signature.

By following this structure, you’ll be able to create a compelling cover letter that will increase your chances of getting accepted for an OJT position. Make sure to customize your cover letter to fit the organization’s culture and the job description. Remember to proofread your letter thoroughly to ensure that it’s free from spelling and grammar errors. Good luck!

Cover Letter Tips for OJT

Writing a cover letter for OJT (On-the-Job Training) can be an exciting yet daunting task. It serves as an important first impression and could determine your chances of securing the position you desire. Here are some tips to help you create a winning cover letter:

  • Begin with a strong introduction: Your opening sentence should be strong enough to capture the recruiter’s attention. It should briefly describe your interest and qualifications for the position.
  • Showcase your skills: Use the body of your letter to highlight your relevant skills and experience. Make sure to align them with the job requirements stated in the job posting.
  • Highlight your achievements: OJTs often prefer candidates who are driven, proactive, and passionate about their work. Highlighting your academic records, relevant certificates, or commendations could significantly boost your chances of being considered for the role.
  • Express your eagerness to learn: Since OJT programs are designed to teach and develop new skills, show your willingness and eagerness to learn. Employers want to hire someone who is willing to learn and grow in the company.
  • Be professional: Avoid using slang or informal language. Use professional terms and be respectful in addressing the recruiter by their title (i.e., Mr., Ms., etc.).
  • Keep it concise: OJTs are usually busy with their work and may not have enough time to read lengthy cover letters. Strive to keep yours brief, direct, and easy to read. The ideal length is one page.

In conclusion, writing a cover letter is your chance to market yourself to the employer. Use it to express your passion, skills, and eagerness to learn. Follow these tips, and you’ll have a winning cover letter that sets you apart from the competition.

Madison Employer

Recruitment Manager

STP Engineering

1 Grove Avenue

Dear Madison,

I want to express my excitable interest in the engineering internship you are offering at STP Engineering. As a final year General Engineering student at the University of Montgomery, I maintain a 3.75 GPA and have made the Dean’s List every semester, setting me up with a solid foundation to get a taste of real engineering at STP.

As well as maintaining these grades, I am also one of the team leaders of the Engineering Society, where we build machines that compete with each other on tasks, and an engineer in the Robotic Society, where we build machines that duke it out with each other to death, most days. During our largest competition of the past year, we competed to build an e-bike that would climb the maximum incline, and also for a 1-km actual hill climb race outdoors. I used CAD and automated CNC to fabricate ultra-light aluminum rear stabilizer wheels, with raised edges that allowed us to fit strips of solid rubber into the wheel, providing traction, and not having to fabricate the wheel to fit an existing tire. Our bike, powered by a rear hub drive, instead of a pedal assist, beat the next team on the incline by 14 degrees (40 degrees), and the last by 21 degrees. As the chief designer and fabricator behind the stabilizer design, I have exhibited outside-of-the-box thinking, and sacrificed a few pounds for increased stability and traction that would ace the harder task.

With these challenges, as well as subjects of my study, I am often able to find the innovative solution that will beat out the others, and have together with my team been crowned The Engineering Society best team in 2019. I am extremely interested and excited how my approach will fare in the world of real engineering, with real, complex, new problems, and I am excited to see how I could grow and what I could learn at a cutting-edge company such as STP.

When could we schedule a call or a meeting for me to tell about the other crazy robotics projects we made?

Best Regards,

PS There was a sword fight involved in our last robotics project. You might want to see the video.

Let’s engineer that letter of your own.

2. How to Write an Engineering Internship Cover Letter That Just Works

1. use the correct cover letter format.

Imagine this. Your engineering cover letter gets picked up. BANG!

A fuse is blown. In the brain of the hiring manager, when they see that fonts between your cover letter and resume do not match, and neither do the margins. In the bin. Something as silly as this can disqualify you from a job requiring this level of attention to detail.

Here’s how your cover letter should look like :

  • Cover letter format : three paragraphs.
  • Set margins at 1-inch.
  • Left-align your cover letter, and single-space your paragraphs.
  • Make your cover letter with no experience less than a full page.
  • Use the same, presentable cover letter font as in your resume.

Let’s get into our engineering internship cover letter example. Here’s what it should include .

2. Make a Header With Your Contact Information

The header of your cover letter for engineering internships should match your resume header . Both should be only one page, so that there is no delay in the “user journey”, or hesitation permitted on the side of the hiring manager.

List your details in full, a space, city and date, a space, and the details of the hiring manager. Things like listing your LinkedIn profile at this stage may be an unnecessary distraction—there’s not going to be anything there they won’t find on the resume just yet.

We can compare notes:

Expert Hint: If you’re applying online, there are some specific issues to keep in mind when sending your legal cover letter electronically, which our email cover letter guide will clue you up on. At ResumeLab, there is also always more cover letter tips, dos and don’ts to know.

3. Say Which Job You’re Applying For and Introduce Yourself

Internships are often amongst the most contested positions on the market. In specialist fields such as engineering, everyone needs their first shot somewhere . Preferably somewhere big, recognizable, and prestigious. Sound familiar?

The statistical truths are on your side, however. The majority of these inexperienced future world-changers will make cardinal errors in their application, the kind that this engineering internship cover letter guide is here to prevent.

When addressing your cover letter, always address the manager by their first name . It shows your attention to detail and research skills. If the name of the manager is nowhere to be found in the job posting, go on the company LinkedIn , or even pick up the phone!

Check against our template:

Cover Letter For Engineering Internship Example: Introduction

Dear  [Hiring Manager’s name]:

As soon as I saw your company logo next to the engineering internship ad on  [career website] , I knew this is the opportunity I have been waiting for. As an  [degree program name]   student in their  [year]  year of study, I maintain a  [X]   GPA, and have made the Dean’s List  [X]  times. I have excelled in  [coursework relevant to company]   modules during my studies, achieving  [grade]  grades, and managed to  [achievement/project related to the above-mentioned] . Together with the know-how and mentorship of  [target company name] , I will be able to make steps towards becoming a true, professional engineer.

Expert Hint: While you’re on LinkedIn stalking hiring managers, you can do some very impressive research. In an innovative, dynamic field such as engineering, many companies will put out their content online. See if the company has any LinkedIn blog posts (check the website, too!)—double points if they’re written by the person who’s going to be receiving your engineering resume. 4. Demonstrate You’re The Best Candidate

Just like in our sample cover letter for engineering internships, start strong , and don’t let go. Maintain the attention. Using empty and flowery statements to fill space will get you binned, and your hopes of being the next Elon Musk.

If you don’t have many varied achievements, feel free to work one angle just like Greg did in the example. If you can provide metrics, ways you contributed to the success, and explain your thinking, that is far more interesting than listing your “ relevant coursework ” or education . Start here:

Sample Cover Letter For Engineering Internship: Middle Paragraph

I have been impatiently waiting for you to reopen your intern intake at  [target company name] , and am excited to offer my candidature. Apart from maintaining the grades, I also take active part in  [society/hobbyist projects/other] . During one of our frequent challenges, we were required to  [challenge task] , where I innovated a  [describe solution]  which allowed us to  [achievement/metric]  and dominate over our opponents. I very much enjoy being an active, motivating, and stimulating part of the team, while competing with the opponents, and I would like to bring that attitude to my tasks at  [target company name] .

Expert Hint: Need to show an ability to develop holistic solutions and work in multidisciplinary teams? See Design For America for events, courses and ideas. Putting these projects, achievements and awards on your resume will boost your chances.

5. Give Them A Reason Why You Applied

Alright, you’re there to grow, to learn, we get it. That’s what interns are for.

Put yourself in the employer’s shoes, and think, what would I want an intern to bring to the table? All interns are bringing an effectively empty slate—they all have been educated similarly—focus on what you can do for the employer.

Fill in the [blanks]:

Engineering Internship Cover Letter Sample: Third Paragraph

I think I would make a significant impact for an Intern, through my hobbies and the college societies I have developed  [skills]  skills far outside the scope of a regular engineering graduate. Perhaps when combined with  [target company name] ’s know how and experience, I could develop those skills to the next level and become a valued employee at the forefront of innovation.

6. Sign Off & Request Interview

End your cover letter professionally, and boldly ask for a call or an interview. You’ve made your case. Sometimes, people need an extra push. Drop in an extra reason or incentive to convince them.

The best way to start a Civil Engineer cover letter is by addressing the hiring manager directly, if their name is known. Then, introduce yourself and state the position you're applying for. Immediately highlight your most relevant experience or achievement that aligns with the job requirements. For instance, "As a Civil Engineer with 5 years of experience in infrastructure development and a proven record in designing cost-effective structures, I am excited to apply for the Civil Engineer position at your esteemed organization." This approach grabs the reader's attention and demonstrates your suitability for the role from the start.

Civil Engineers should end a cover letter by summarizing their interest in the position and their belief in their ability to contribute positively to the company. They should reiterate their key skills and experiences that make them a strong candidate for the role. It's also important to express appreciation for the reader's time and consideration. For example: "I am confident that my skills and experiences make me a strong candidate for this position. I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to your team and believe that I can bring a unique perspective and innovative solutions to your projects. Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the possibility of discussing this opportunity further." Always end with a professional closing such as "Sincerely" or "Best regards," followed by your name.

A Civil Engineer's cover letter should ideally be about one page long. This length is sufficient to introduce yourself, explain why you're interested in the specific role and company, and highlight your most relevant skills and experiences. It's important to keep it concise and focused, as hiring managers often have many applications to review and may not spend a lot of time on each individual cover letter. Remember, the cover letter is your opportunity to make a strong first impression and encourage the reader to look at your resume in more detail, so every sentence should add value and relevance to your application.

Writing a cover letter with no experience as a Civil Engineer can seem challenging, but it's definitely possible. Here's how you can approach it: 1. Start with a Professional Introduction: Begin your cover letter by introducing yourself and stating the position you're applying for. Make sure to mention where you found the job posting. 2. Highlight Your Education: If you don't have professional experience, your education is your strongest asset. Discuss your degree, the institution you attended, and any relevant coursework or projects. If you had a high GPA, you might want to include that as well. 3. Showcase Relevant Skills: Even without direct experience, you likely have skills that are relevant to civil engineering. These could be technical skills like proficiency in AutoCAD or soft skills like problem-solving or teamwork. Provide examples of how you've used these skills in the past, even if it was in a different context. 4. Discuss Internships or Extracurricular Activities: If you've completed internships or been involved in engineering clubs or competitions, these are great to mention. They show that you've been proactive about gaining experience and have a genuine interest in the field. 5. Show Enthusiasm for the Role: Employers want to hire people who are passionate about their work. Express your excitement for the role and the field of civil engineering. 6. Close with a Strong Conclusion: In your concluding paragraph, reiterate your interest in the position and your eagerness to contribute to the company. Thank the employer for considering your application and express your hope for further discussion. 7. Proofread: Make sure to thoroughly proofread your cover letter for any spelling or grammar mistakes. A well-written, error-free cover letter shows that you are detail-oriented and take your work seriously. Remember, everyone starts somewhere. Even without direct experience, your education, skills, and enthusiasm can make you a strong candidate for a civil engineering position.

MR. EDWARD SAN ANTONIO Principal III Magdaong High School, Makati City Philippines

Dear Mr. San Antonio:

Good day! I am Katerina de Pedro, a 4th year Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) major in English student of San Ramon College. One of the requirements of our course is a on-the-job training or an internship in the field for one semester which is composed of five (5) months.

I am humbly applying to be a trainee or an intern in your school if you would allow me from January 2021 until May of the same year. We are required to report in a school five days a week observing the regular school hours implemented by our chosen institution.

I am a graduate of Magdaong High School thus I wanted to have my internship in this school and gain a different experience – not as a student this time but as an intern. It’s really a big opportunity that I will be grateful for in case you would allow me.

I am very much willing to talk to you in person. Thank you so much for your time.
