Best Sites For Rating Movies: 6 Top Movie Review Websites

movie review aggregator

Our society has grown to worship movies. This can be seen in the sheer number of movies made each year, some good and some bad. Because there are so many to choose from, finding a good one can be a challenge.

Movies now make up a huge part of the entertainment industry. But with so many choices comes the problem of finding the best ones to watch.

It would take hours upon hours to watch every movie made in a year, and even then you’d likely miss some great ones. So how can we solve this problem?

The answer reviews. Reviews allow us to get an idea of whether or not others liked the movie before we decide if it’s worth watching ourselves.

BEST SITES FOR RATING MOVIES

What are movie review sites.

Movie review sites like IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, and Letterboxd are great places to find out what a movie is all about.

They can also be useful for finding out if your favorite actor has been in other movies you may have missed.

Movie review websites are one of the best ways to learn what critics think of a movie and how they feel about it.

The more information you can gather on a film, the better informed you’ll be when you decide whether to watch it or not.

Movie review sites don’t really have any effect on box office sales, but they can make a huge difference in determining what kind of an impact a movie will have on consumers.

A review helps us determine if others were entertained by a movie before we spend our time and money on it.

Picking a movie to watch can be hard. You have your mood to consider, the weather, and the amount of time you have available.

And who to see it with? But even after all that, one question remains — is it any good?

With sites like Letterboxd, the answer is now as easy as logging into your social media account.

With that in mind, we’ve put together a list of the best movie review sites out there. Not everyone will be for everyone, but each reviewer has something unique to offer that makes it worth checking out.

Best Sites For Rating Movies – Why Use Movie Review Sites?

Movie Review sites like IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes , and Metacritic are helpful for many reasons.

First, they’re an excellent source for learning about the best films.

Second, it’s another great way to find out about movies that are just being released or will be released in the future.

And third, movie review sites have other useful information like trailers, showtimes and tickets, DVD release dates, and more.

There are a lot of fans who love talking about movies, and these movie review sites offer them a great place to do just that. You can find out what other people think of the movie you’re watching.

Here are the top 5 reasons to use movie review sites:

1. You want to discover new films, new genres, or new directors to check out.

2. You’re not sure exactly what you want to see, and you’re looking for movie recommendations.

3. You’re looking for a good way to kill time when you’re stuck in a waiting room.

4. You wonder why that movie was such a big deal when it came out.

5. You want to find out how the latest movies compare to the classics.

User Experience and Interface

The user experience and interface of a movie rating site can significantly impact its usability.

IMDb offers a user-friendly interface with easy navigation to different sections. Its search functionality is robust, allowing users to find detailed information swiftly.

Rotten Tomatoes’ interface is clean and intuitive, with scores prominently displayed and easy access to both critic and audience reviews.

Metacritic’s layout is straightforward, focusing on presenting scores and reviews in an accessible format. Each site’s design enhances the process of discovering and evaluating movies.

Mobile Accessibility of Movie Rating Sites

The accessibility of movie rating sites on mobile devices is a crucial aspect for users who rely on smartphones and tablets.

IMDb provides a comprehensive mobile app, allowing users to access its extensive database on the go.

Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic also offer mobile-friendly websites and apps, ensuring that users can check movie ratings, read reviews, and find film recommendations easily, no matter where they are.

These apps maintain the functionality of their desktop counterparts, offering a seamless mobile experience.

Community Features of Movie Rating Sites

Community features play a significant role in movie rating sites. IMDb’s forums provide a space for in-depth discussions and debates among movie enthusiasts.

Rotten Tomatoes allows users to leave their own reviews and ratings, fostering a community of shared opinions.

Metacritic’s user reviews complement professional critiques, offering diverse perspectives.

These community elements enhance the overall experience by enabling engagement and interaction among users.

Streaming Service Ratings vs. Dedicated Movie Rating Sites

Comparing movie ratings on dedicated sites like IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, and Metacritic with those on streaming platforms like Netflix reveals differences in approach.

Streaming services often use personalized algorithms to suggest films, focusing on individual viewing habits.

In contrast, dedicated movie rating sites provide broader insights with aggregated critic and user ratings, offering a more holistic view of a film’s reception.

This comparison helps users understand the value of different rating sources in selecting movies.

Movie Rating Sites – Wrap Up

Wrapping up, movie rating sites play an indispensable role in guiding viewers through the vast landscape of cinema.

Whether you are looking for critically acclaimed art-house films or mainstream blockbusters, these sites offer valuable insights and detailed information to inform your choice.

By leveraging the unique features and community aspects of each platform, movie enthusiasts can enhance their viewing experience, making informed decisions about what to watch next.

There are many websites that offer movie reviews and ratings, but here are six of the top sites:

Rotten Tomatoes: Rotten Tomatoes is one of the most popular movie review websites. It aggregates reviews from both professional critics and regular movie-goers to provide an overall score for each film.

IMDb: IMDb is a comprehensive database of movies information that also includes user reviews and ratings. Its Top Rated Movies list is based on user ratings, and it’s a great place to find information about upcoming movies.

Metacritic: Like Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic aggregates reviews from critics, but it also assigns a weighted score to each review based on the critic’s track record. The site’s Metascore is often used as a shorthand for a movie’s critical reception.

Letterboxd: Letterboxd is a social media platform for movie lovers that allows users to rate and review films, create watchlists, and follow other users with similar tastes. Its recommendation algorithm is known for being particularly effective.

RogerEbert.com: Roger Ebert was one of the most respected film critics of his time, and his website continues to offer thoughtful and insightful reviews from a team of writers. The site also includes essays, interviews, and other film-related content.

Empire: Empire is a UK-based magazine that covers movies, TV shows, and video games. Its website includes reviews, news, and features, and its annual Empire Awards are highly respected within the industry.

These Are the 6 Key Reasons I'll Be Upgrading to the Google TV Streamer

How to install youtube music on your pc from the browser, is anything better than plex i tested the alternatives.

Thanks to online ratings, it's easier than ever to know whether or not a movie is worth watching. A quick Google search brings up plenty of websites offering their opinions on the latest films.

The three most popular are IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, and Metacritic. But how do these sites differ, and which should you trust for information on movies? Here's everything you need to know.

IMDb 2020 Screenshot

The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) is a gigantic compendium of movies, TV shows, and video games. Its primary use is to find detailed information about any actor, producer, or piece of media content.

When you pull up a movie, you'll see a synopsis, trailers, photos, a cast list, trivia, and much more. What makes IMDb so useful is its cross-referencing. Upon opening the page for an actor, you'll see their best-known roles. Thus, IMDb is great for those "what else have I seen her in?" moments.

The IMDb mobile app takes this a step further. If you create an account and give ratings to movies and other media, you'll see a You may know them from field on an actor's page if you've rated something they appeared in.

With a free IMDb account, you can also create a Watchlist of movies you want to see. Along with contributing to the 10-point rating scale with other users, IMDb has many other useful features to offer if you're interested.

Pros of IMDb

Unlike the other two sites, IMDb's reviews come solely from users. It only takes a minute to sign up for IMDb and leave a review, so there's little barrier to entry.

Thus, IMDb's biggest strength is that its scores gives you a good idea of what normal consumers think of it. Professional critics have no influence on IMDb scores.

IMDb has a weighted average system to prevent users from rigging the score, but the service doesn't make it clear exactly how this works. Click the review count next to the star icon on any movie's page to see a breakdown of how people rated it.

Below the overall star average, you can see how the ratings break down by a few demographics, including age and gender.

IMDb User Rating Breakdown

Cons of IMDb

IMDb's biggest problem is that like other platforms, most people only leave reviews if they love or hate a film. Thus, this skews the scores in favor of either fanboys or haters.

People who want to boost a movie's perception will likely rate the movie a 10, while those who didn't like it will give a rating of one. This means you should read a handful of reviews to get a full picture of the movie's quality.

Rotten Tomatoes

Rotten- omatoes Homepage 2020

Rotten Tomatoes is a trusted source for movie reviews sourced from critics. Every movie uses the "Tomatometer" to score the quality of a film. If the critic liked the movie, a red tomato appears by their review. When they don't like it, you'll see a green splat instead.

As long as 60 percent or more of critics like the movie, it earns an overall Fresh score with a red tomato. If under 60 percent of critics rate the movie favorably, it earns a Rotten score with a green splat.

Meanwhile, a Certified Fresh badge appears next to titles that are of particularly high quality. They must hold at least a 75 percent favorable score after 80 reviews, including at least five from top critics.

Open any movie's page, and you'll see the overall score plus its number of reviews at the top. Click See Score Details for a deeper breakdown. The Critics Consensus , present for most movies, is a great summary of why the movie received its score.

Rotten Tomatoes also providers a user score, shown by the popcorn bucket. When at least 60 percent of users rated it 3.5 stars (out of 5) or higher, it shows a full bucket. A tipped-over bucket represents that under 60 percent of users gave it under 3.5 stars. Since you can use half-star ratings, this is close to the IMDb score.

In 2019, Rotten Tomatoes made some changes to reduce "review bombing" of movies. There's no longer a Want to See percentage, and you'll also see a check next to user reviews where the site has confirmed that the person actually bought a ticket to the movie.

At the bottom of a movie's page, you can read excerpts from the critic reviews, filter by fresh or rotten, or only show top critics. Search for your favorite actors, and you can check the scores of films they appeared in.

Pros of Rotten Tomatoes

Rotten Tomatoes Movie Score

Rotten Tomatoes has the advantage of sourcing its reviews from trusted critics. The Rotten Tomatoes criteria page explains that the site only takes reviews from trusted newspapers, podcasts, and websites. In theory, this means that only the opinions of the most-trusted movie critics influence the Rotten Tomatoes review.

The Top Critic designation lets you filter by the absolute best critics if you prefer. You can't get a more professional opinion than from these folks.

Overall, Rotten Tomatoes does a good job of letting you know at a glance whether or not a movie is worth your time. The easily identifiable icons, overall score, and consensus summary only take a moment to scan.

Cons of Rotten Tomatoes

The biggest issue with Rotten Tomatoes is that it breaks down complex opinions into a Yes or No score. It scores a critic who thought the movie was decent but had some flaws (say, a 59 percent rating) the same as one who thought the movie was absolute garbage (a zero percent score).

You'll notice this with the Average Rating under the score. Take Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle as an example. Of the 232 critic reviews, 177 of them are positive. This gives the movie a score of 76 percent. However, the critics rated the movie an average of 6.2/10---quite a bit under the 76 percent displayed on the page.

This doesn't mean the scores on Rotten Tomatoes are useless, of course. But it's important to remember that there's nuance in individual reviews, and the Fresh/Rotten system effectively turns every rating into a 100 or 0 score.

Metacritic Home 2020

Metacritic aggregates reviews of movies and TV shows, plus video games and music albums. It's one of the best sites for gamers , but it can give you a good idea on the quality of movies too.

The site collects reviews from many sources and aggregates them into one "metascore" from 0 to 100. It displays a color and one-line indication of quality based on the overall score, with the following used for movies, TV, and albums:

  • 81-100: Universal Acclaim (Green)
  • 61-80: Generally Favorable Reviews (Green)
  • 40-60: Mixed or Average Reviews (Yellow)
  • 20-39: Generally Unfavorable Reviews (Red)
  • 0-19: Overwhelming Dislike (Red)

Unlike Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic uses a weighted average system. Nobody knows the exact details, but the service assigns more importance to some sources than others. Like the other two sites, Metacritic also includes a separate user score, which does not influence the critic score.

The Pros of Metacritic

Metacritic avoids the Rotten Tomatoes problem of scoring every review as simply "good" or "bad." A review of 50 percent gets mixed in with the rest to create the metascore. Thus, the score you see on Metacritic is closer to the average review, as opposed to the percentage of critics who simply liked the movie on Rotten Tomatoes.

Additionally, among these three sites, Metacritic is the only one to feature full user reviews right next to critic reviews. This makes it easy to compare what the general public thinks compared to the professionals.

The Cons of Metacritic

While it's easy to translate a score from a five-star or 10-point scale, Metacritic's way of translating letter grade is questionable. We can see how this works on the About Metascores page :

Metacritic Letter Scores 2020

While scoring an A as 100 percent makes sense, note the scores for B- and F , for instance. A 67 percent score for a B- seems a bit harsh. In most schools, a score of 67 percent is closer to an F than it is a B- .

And scoring an F as 0 percent seems unfair. Something like 20 percent for an F might be more appropriate. Because every site has different scales for scoring (some might not even use pluses and minuses), this could skew a reviewer's original meaning.

Also, unlike Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic seems to have few public standards. There's no detailed information on where it sources it critics from. Thus, the score potentially doesn't have as much weight behind it as Rotten Tomatoes does.

What Is the Best Movie Rating Website?

So we've now taken a look at IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, and Metacritic, and listed their major pros and cons. As you might have guessed, there's no one website that's best for everything.

However, we can recommend each of these sites for different reasons:

  • IMDb is great for seeing what general audiences think of a movie. If you don't care what the critics say and want to see what people like yourself thought of a film, then you should use IMDb. Just be aware that fans often skew the vote with 10-star ratings, which may inflate scores somewhat.
  • Rotten Tomatoes offers the best overall picture of whether a movie is worth seeing at a glance. If you only trust the opinions of top critics and just want to know if a movie is at least decent, you should use Rotten Tomatoes. While the Fresh/Rotten binary can oversimplify the often complex opinions of critics, it should still help you weed out lousy films.
  • Metacritic offers the most balanced aggregate score. If you don't mind which critics' opinions go into the final score and prefer seeing a general average, then you should use Metacritic. Its standards are mostly unknown, but Metacritic makes it easy to compare professional and user reviews side-by-side.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with checking all three of these sites every time you're thinking of seeing a movie. Over time, you should figure out which site's tastes most match yours; then you'll know which is best for you personally.

Personal Taste Still Matters Most

Remember that movie scores aren't everything. All three of these sites don't, for instance, paint an accurate picture of movies that are so bad they're good. Because those movies are objectively terrible, they carry low scores even though they have ironic value.

Plus, it's impossible to sum up complex opinions from dozens of people into a single number. And no matter what the critics or general public think, your preferences might be totally different anyway. There's nothing wrong with enjoying a movie that most people find stupid. So while these sites are helpful, don't take them too seriously.

Movie Review Aggregators Grow in Popularity, But Do They Matter?

Rotten Tomatoes is the best known of three movie review aggregators, but Metacritic and Movie Review Intelligence are increasingly in the mix

movie review aggregator

With media splintering more each passing year, movie review aggregator sites like Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic have grown in popularity, regularly popping up in studio marketing materials and box office reporting.

But how important are they? Are they any more reliable gauges of quality – or success – than traditional film critics were in their heyday?

Depends on who you ask. Studios certainly pay attention to top aggregators, even if they don't always like to assign much importance to them. Film critics like the exposure on Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic and Movie Review Intelligence, but they are uneasy with some of the methodologies used.

“I don’t know if they mean anything,” one studio distribution chief told TheWrap, before proceeding to rattle off scores that the studio’s movies had recently received.

Another executive said that studios pay attention for a very simple reason: because viewers do.

“In the old days, you used to follow a critic,” the executive said, but that has changed. “People don’t want to read 40 reviews, so in less than 60 seconds, you can get a sense that 80 percent of the critics thought this movie was great – or not.”

Also read: Rotten Tomatoes, a Division of Warner Bros. — Can It Be Unbiased?

movie review aggregator

He’s less convinced of the value of the aggregated rankings.

"People quote the Tomato Meter," Ebert said. "But what does it really mean?"

The Tomato Meter gives a very simple read on how many of its critics gave the movie in question a favorable, or “fresh,” rating. Metacritic and Movie Review Intelligence take nuances of individual reviews into account. Their scores are generally similar – though Rotten Tomatoes methodology lends itself to higher high scores and lower low scores.

“We read through all the reviews we can find and give everything a simple up-or-down rating,” Atchity explained to TheWrap. To be considered fresh a movie needs to hit 60 percent; below that, it’s rotten.

The site looks at the work of about 500 critics, although most movies get 250 reviews at the most. If there’s a question, the staff will ask the critic. And if the critic says it’s neither one, Rotten Tomatoes, which is owned by Flixster, which is, in turn, owned by Warner Bros., will push for an answer.

“If you get a 90 percent Rotten Tomatoes, it sounds like a four-star review,” the executive said. “But what it really means is that 90 percent of the people who reviewed it, reviewed it favorably.” So studios sometimes tout their Rotten Tomatoes score rather than individual reviews because the Tomato Meter can look better.

movie review aggregator

Atchity does acknowledge that “there is less space for subtlety” in Rotten Tomatoes.

It used to be fairly easy to be a reviewer for the site. Any member of a critics’ organization was eligible.

“That’s no longer the case,” Atchity said. “That’s merely a part of the qualification.”

Like Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic’s staff of six reads reviews and decides whether they’re positive or negative. But they try to address how good – or how bad – a movie is.

Sometimes it’s easy: If critics give a movie four stars out of a possible five, Metacritic automatically gives the review an 80. But 40 percent of Metacritic’s reviewers do not assign scores, so Metacritic’s staff of six gives the review a number.

“There is a process of us reading these reviews and evaluating them,” Marc Doyle, Metacritic’s editor-in-chief, told TheWrap.

Metacritic, which is owned by CBS Interactive, reads far fewer reviews than Rotten Tomatoes – 44.

And while at Rotten Tomatoes, all critics are created equal, Metacritic assigns scores to critics as well as to their reviews.

The greater a critic’s stature, the more influential that critic’s opinion will be on the Metacritic score.

Like Metacritic, it has a relatively small number of critics – 51. And like Metacritic, it assigns each critic his or her own level of importance.

But instead of weighting critics based on stature, it looks at their readership.

Anybody working for a large-circulation publication – even someone with no previous experience – would be considered especially important in Movie Review Intelligence’s formula.

“The mainstream taste needs to be heard as part of the mix,” David Gross, the site’s editor and publisher, told TheWrap. “I proudly include People magazine and Us Weekly and AP, along with the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, LA Weekly and Slant magazine. There are some wonderful small publications that are doing fantastic critical work – but I think all voices need to be heard.”

So how do their ratings stack up?

All three gave high marks to “The Artist,” the highest scoring best picture nominee across all three sites, across all three sites: an 89 from Metacritic, a 92.2 from Movie Review Intelligence and a 97 from Rotten Tomatoes. In a potentially ominous sign for its Oscar prospects, the sites were far more mixed on “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close,” which got a 46 on Metacritic, a 62.2 on Movie Review Intelligence and a 45 at Rotten Tomatoes.

Gross said that for the time being, he's pleased with his site's niche.

"The other sites are giants," Gross told TheWrap, "and so we’re happy to be the independent.”

There’s no login required: click on movie and TV shows that are appealing based on a selection provided and after selecting four or five, a list of worthwhile options will show up. The set-up is similar to an actual streaming service, with unique sections with themes like recently added, movies or shows available for purchase or rent, content that has been flagged as a favorite by other subscribers, watch lists from users with similar tastes and preferences, and even humorous ones like “romantic movies that don’t suck.”

Two phones showing the TV Time app on screen.

Dubbed the “world’s largest tracking tool for TV and movies,” TV Time is available on the web or scan the QR code on the homepage to download the mobile app. Track favorite TV shows and movies to get notifications when they are available or returning with new seasons, discover new content, and view data-driven insights on what others are watching when, and why they chose the content.

Designed to be a pseudo-TV guide, it aggregates content from a variety of services to present them in a guide format, including both linear networks and streaming services, like the smaller streaming platforms that are worth checking out . Have friends sign up too and keep track of who’s watching what, how far they have gotten into a season, and more.

Watchworthy

A phone screen showing the WatchWorthy app.

Access Watchworthy , powered by Ranker, via web browser or mobile app and get personalized TV recommendations from content across more than 200 streaming services to avoid having to flip back and forth among multiple ones. Use the app or site to build a personal watchlist to refer to whenever there’s a lull in the schedule, like after finishing the latest season of a show.

First, confirm the applicable services and channels. Then, functioning similar to a dating app, as show titles appear, pick which ones have already been viewed, if they were liked or disliked it, or for ones not yet seen, if there’s any interest or not. Not sure? Swipe right or left to skip. As the information is fathered, Watchworthy will determine the probability of liking or disliking a specific show, thus affording it a “worthy” score. Like magic, up pops a variety of shows that would likely appeal, with the most “worthy” at the top of the list. Click the like or dislike button for each and the engine will continue learning over time.

Two phones overlapping, showing the Qewd app on screen.

Another aggregator website and app, Qewd includes details on content from all the top streaming services, making it easy to explore trends and get a personally curated list of options to consider from both the site’s own tastemakers, as well as friends and family members.

The powerful engine is only part of the equation: Qewd focuses as much on the social aspect, helping users connect with friends, family members, and even favorite influencers and brands to see what other like-minded people are watching and recommending. Curate a personal “channel” with content from multiple streaming services, social platforms, and even other videos on the internet, so it’s easy to access via a single click. The app is new and there’s still a waitlist, but for TV and movie lovers, it might be worth waiting for.

Why You Should Use a Review Aggregator (+Best Tools)

As a business, you need to keep a keen eye on what your customers are saying about you. Your online reviews largely control the perception of your  brand , which you must manage as much as possible.

Review aggregators are platforms that collect a large amount of reviews on a product, service, or business. It then “aggregates” and gives an average score. Consumers use that score to assess your business, its products and services.

It affects their purchasing decision, which is why they’re so important.

Don’t know much about them? Don’t worry, this guide will cover everything you need to know, including:

  • What a review aggregator is
  • Why your business should care about review aggregators
  • The 15 most important review aggregators to focus on
  • How to manage your reviews with ReviewBot

Ready? Let’s get started.

What Is a Review Aggregator?

Review aggregators are platforms that collect reviews on a product or service, ranking them based on an accumulated average score. Consumers use them to help with research before making a purchasing decision.

Review aggregators exist for a number of different industries, products, services, and niches. Some popular examples include:

  • Rotten Tomatoes for films/movies/TV series
  • Metacritic for video games
  • Yelp for local businesses
  • Glassdoor for employer reviews
  • Google Play Store for Android apps
  • App Store for Apple apps
  • G2 for software reviews

Review aggregators make it extremely easy for consumers to compare products and services, based on available reviews. Some of them are websites, while others are software apps.

Why Should Your Business Care About Review Aggregators?

Review aggregators are important to consider for your business because they can influence your sales. Consumers will go to review aggregator platforms and assess the quality of a product or service. They’ll compare it to other options available on the marketplace.

For instance, the Rotten Tomatoes score of a film/movie can greatly affect how many people pay to see it. The same is true for buying games, based on a Metacritic score. In fact,  every additional 5 points over an 80+ Metacritic score equates to double the sales .

As a business, you need to keep a keen eye on all review aggregator platforms that feature your products or services. They’re the best indicator of how good what you’re offering is, and where you stand compared to the competition. It’ll also give you a good idea where you can improve.

These Are the Most Important Review Aggregators to Focus On

Of course, this is the biggest, most well-known, and best movie-reviewing website of all time. With hundreds of thousands of votes from random people and critics around the world, you can submit your rating out of ten stars, and it contributes to the final rating. The only problem with this website is that there are tens

This website is pretty amazing. It only has one random person who gives the movie a rating out of five stars, with the average being three. The rating is usually inaccurate, so the reviewing aspect of this website isn't great. However, they give a very accurate age rating and a ranking out of five for different categories such as violence and inappropriate content. Users can also give their own rating out of five stars and age rating, though it goes into a different category. This is quite good.

I knew nothing about them before this, but while researching for this list many people seemed to like them. After checking out the website, they seem good.

This website is definitely not for people who just enjoy watching movies for their own sake, but for serious scholarly film buffs. It puts out print magazines that highlight a handful of articles focusing on the different artistic aspects of the movie. Very good, but sometimes a bit boring and maybe not for the average person.

Just an average movie reviewing website. I have nothing negative to say about them, nor anything positive, so they earn a place on here.

Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Kevin Hart as Roland, Florian Munteanu as Krieg and Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis in Borderlands.

Lionsgate ‘s Borderlands hits theaters Aug. 9, but the review embargo for the film broke Thursday, and the early reaction from critics has been dire.

A live-action adaptation of Gearbox Software’s popular video game series, Eli Roth ‘s film takes place on the planet Pandora and tells the story of a band of outlaw misfits. The film stars Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Ariana Greenblatt and Jamie Lee Curtis, with Jack Black providing the voice of a wisecracking robot.

Below are key excerpts from some of the most prominent early reviews.

In his negative review for The Hollywood Reporter , David Rooney writes that “the big mystery [with Borderlands ] is how such a noisy nothing of a movie landed the stacked cast.” David zeroes in on what went wrong with the film, highlighting big changes during the production. “To be fair, the project for which Blanchett and other major names signed on possibly looked a little different given the number of screenwriting hands it passed through. The most notable of those belonged to Craig Mazin, a co-creator and co-writer of The Last of Us , who reportedly chose to remove his name from the project. The script credit ultimately went to Roth and first-timer Joe Crombie, with speculation that the latter is a pseudonym.”

In a zero stars review in the New York Post , Johnny Oleksinski writes that Borderlands is a serious misstep for an actor of the caliber of Cate Blanchett. “If I was the two-time Oscar winner, I’d hire a crack team to work around the clock to scrub all mention of it from the Internet. The film is that embarrassing,” writes Oleksinski. The critic was not moved on any level, writing that “everything about Borderlands is appalling: the acting, writing, direction, design.”

In his review for The Daily Beast , an exasperated Nick Schager headlines his piece with: “Cate Blanchett, what are you doing?” After a run of great video game adaptations, Schager is confident the streak ends with Borderlands . “Gearbox Software’s games were light on plot and heavy on action, and Roth doubles down on that formula to monotonous results,” writes Schager. “Lacking the emotional depth, narrative creativity, and witty humor of James Gunn’s beloved [ Guardians of the Galaxy ], Roth’s big-budget venture is propelled only by borrowed ideas and stale execution, both of which cause it to crash and burn in spectacular fashion.”

Writing in The New York Times , Amy Nicholson begins her review with questions over the co-writer of Borderlands , suggesting the mess of the film owed much to production problems. Nicholson shies away from excoriating the film totally, but was still left disappointed. “You can see the jokes, but most of them don’t land. Still, there is some neat design work if you squint,” Nicholson writes, adding that Blanchett was one of the few highlights: “The two-time Oscar winner endures the nonsense by carrying herself like a warrior on a kitschy propaganda poster.”

In another mixed review, Collider ‘s Taylor Gates felt Borderlands had some positives, including the performances of Ariana Greenblatt, Jack Black and Jamie Lee Curtis, but ultimately the flaws pull the film down. “ Borderlands is an action-adventure movie at its core, and it undoubtedly delivers on that front. The action — especially the hand-to-hand combat and more acrobatic fight choreography — is a blast,” writes Gates. “The film suffers when it comes to pacing, too. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice to have a movie sit well under two hours — something the majority of films these days don’t seem to do — but the speed at which plotlines get resolved feels rushed instead of efficient, the breakneck pace sacrificing clarity and much-needed tension and stakes.”

Critic reviews of the Borderlands movie are absolutely savage

Stop, stop, it was dead on arrival.

Borderlands movie characters sitting in a car

After first contact with fans yesterday , critics are somehow even more disappointed with the Borderlands movie. They hate it. They don't even give it credit as "so bad it's good." It is simply, by all appearances, a truly and extremely bad movie. It holds a remarkable 3% approval on aggregator Rotten Tomatoes as of press time. Without further improvement that will place Borderlands at a comfortable midpoint on RT's 100 worst movies of all time list… and at first place on their Worst Blockbusters of All Time list—below even 2010's disastrous The Last Airbender.

Perhaps the choicest Borderlands smackdown was delivered by Rolling Stone , where reviewer David Fear called it "an insult to gamers, movie lovers, and carbon-based life forms." Which I think is unnecessarily harsh judgment on the tastes of theoretical Silicon-Oxygen-Fluorine biochemistry life forms. They would also hate the Borderlands movie.

"You seriously wonder if the sole purpose of Borderlands is to make every other video game adaptation look a thousand times better in comparison," says Fear. Later saying that "It is, in no uncertain terms, a horrendous waste of time, talent, and pixels. Not even the pleasure of seeing Blanchett twirling pistols and kicking ass can salvage this."

On home turf at IGN , where you might expect a videogame movie to do better, Borderlands failed to land, earning an "Awful" rating from reviewer Matt Donato, who noted that it failed to live up to any of the promise the games hold. The fun locales are there, but they're "all spoonfed, familiar, and as filling as a single rice cake."

Even Variety failed to find anything lovable: "By the time 'Borderlands' unlocks its vault, not even the characters seem to care what’s inside," said Peter Debruge.

What I found to be the finest summary of critic views, however, comes from The Wrap via writer William Bibbiani . Bibbiani's review notes all the ways in which Borderlands tries to be like other, better films and fails rather than finding its own voice derived from the games.

"The biggest problem with Eli Roth’s 'Borderlands' isn’t that it’s bad," says Bibbiani, "it’s that it’s not interesting enough to be bad. It’s mass-produced pabulum. All the edges have been sanded down so it can be safe and mainstream, but they went too far and there’s almost nothing left. It’s technically a movie based on 'Borderlands.' Not much else."

  • Despite mixed reviews, It Ends With Us received a positive audience response and holds the potential for further success, following in the footsteps of similar female-skewing films.

Are we witnessing this year’s “Barbenheimer” event ? After months of build-up and cross-promotions with Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine , Sony’s It Ends with Us debuted with ceiling-shattering figures this weekend. Incidentally, both movies star the married couple, Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively , who’ve been going on marketing overdrive for the last few weeks. The buzz helped Deadpool & Wolverine break records in the last few weeks, and now, It Ends with Us is here to keep the momentum going. The romantic drama exceeded expectations in its opening weekend , particularly at the domestic box office, where it finished a close second behind Deadpool & Wolverine .

With $50 million domestically and another $30 from overseas markets, the film’s cumulative global gross stands at $80 million . That’s a stellar debut for a movie that reportedly cost a relatively modest $25 million to produce. Based on Colleen Hoover ’s 2016 bestseller , It Ends with Us didn’t merely rely on the Lively-ness of it all; the movie also found itself in a bit of a pre-release controversy akin to 2022’s Don’t Worry Darling . That movie concluded its global run with just under $90 million, which It Ends with Us should be able to pass in a matter of days.

Other comparable titles include The Fault in Our Stars , Twilight , and Fifty Shades of Grey . The John Green adaptation generated $48 million domestically in its opening weekend, and went on to gross over $300 million worldwide. Stephenie Meyer ’s generation-defining YA adaptation generated $60 million in its first weekend and went on to gross over $400 million worldwide. Based on E.L. James ’ erotic thriller, Fifty Shades of Grey made $85 million domestically in its opening weekend, and concluded its global run with nearly $570 million. More recently, Where the Crawdads Sing was quietly able to generate nearly $150 million worldwide, while The Girl on the Train concluded its run with a little over $170 million.

Could this Mark a Comeback for Book Club Fare on the Big Screen After a Streaming Detour?

Like each of these female-skewing films, It Ends with Us has also received mixed reviews but positive fan response . It holds a 59% approval rating on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes , although its audience score stands at a far more positive 94%. The movie also earned an excellent A- CinemaScore from the opening day crowds, which bodes well for its future. In her review , Collider’s Isabella Soares praised the movie for handling delicate themes of domestic abuse, and compared it favorably to the source novel.

Directed by and co-starring Justin Baldoni , It Ends with Us also features Brandon Sklenar , Jenny Slate , and Hasan Minhaj in supporting roles. You can watch the film in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.

'The Instigators' review

Like Doug Liman ‘s recent Amazon remake of Road House , his latest streaming effort The Instigators quite frankly misses its calling. Both films should have had wide theatrical runs before hitting the services. They are the kinds of films that are fun to watch with a crowd.

Watch on deadline.

With a mismatched group of robbers along for the ride, he is planning an election-night heist against the corrupt but popular Mayor Miccelli (Ron Perlman), who has been stashing away illicit cash for most of his many terms in office. It is set in motion by low-life wannabe crime boss Mr. Besegai (Michael Stuhlbarg) and associate Richie DeChico (Alfred Molina), who runs a bakery as a cover. They apparently couldn’t get anyone else to attempt to pull this off, so they scrape the bottom of the barrel with Rory and Cobby. To say it all goes terribly wrong would be an understatement, but it leads to a citywide chase with cops, mob types, henchmen and others pursuing our boys.

What really makes it soar in its terrific cast. Damon and Affleck are perfectly matched as an odd couple we want to succeed. Chau, who worked with Damon in Downsizing , somehow makes us believe this medical professional would so easily abandon all reason and join up on this nutso game. Stuhlbarg, Molina and Ving Rhames as a seen-it-all cop take one-dimensional roles and make then sing, as does Paul Walter Hauser and rapper Jack Harlow, who both have their moments as pathetic crooks. Perlman plays the rotten mayor for all he’s worth, but Toby Jones as his ever-faithful (until he isn’t) lawyer/fixer steals every scene they are in together or apart.

Shout-out to film editors William Goldenberg, Saar Klein and Tatiana S. Riegel, who, under Liman’s guidance, keep this thing humming. As the filmmaker behind the likes of Swingers, The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith among others, Liman knows how to navigate this kind of material, never take it seriously and keep us engaged. I should note that Boston itself delivers quite a star turn as the ideal location for this craziness. It’s the perfect summer movie. Enjoy it on your couch.

Producers are Damon, Ben Affleck (the second project for their Artists Equity after Air) , Jeff Robinov, Kevin J. Walsh, John Graham and Alison Winter.
