Ek Love Ya review: A deeply romantic drama with a twist of hate

With his latest outing, Ek Love Ya, director Prem has tried to delve into the theme of a love-hate relationship between youngsters with added elements of parent-children bonding. What makes the film noteworthy is the element of curiosity that comes with the starcast comprising of newcomers like Raanna and Reeshma Nanaiah, The film attempts to paint a saga of true love that faces ups and downs including separations and sacrifices. The film begins with a college graduation event, and introduces Amar (Raanna), a topper in school, who is fulfilling his father Shankar’s (Shashikumar) wish of becoming a lawyer. However, Amar is always seen as a chain smoker and alcoholic, who is in search of Anitha, his childhood lover, whom he wants to... kill!

Through a flashback told to a sex worker (Ankita Naik), we are shown Amar’s childhood love story that went awry and resulted in his then crush Anitha leaving with her parents to a different town. Unable to recover from the loss, Amar wants to take revenge on Anitha. As the narrative progresses, we have thrilling second half where Amar is in jail because of his love. Did Amar actually avenge his love? Is he actually innocent? Will he reclaim his love? The answers to these questions and more make this heartbreaking (at times) romantic drama watchable.

Prem’s Ek Love Ya focuses on the power of true love, and is mounted on a huge canvas by Rakshita Film Factory. Although the subject taken up by the director is familiar, the topic is still relevant. The love episodes are lengthy and emotional, and the second half, which is packed with courtroom scenes fails to make the required impact.

On the acting front, Prem has managed to extract the right kind of emotions from Raanna and Reeshma Nanaiah. While Raana is saddled with a lot of responsibilities, he does manage to pull it off. Reeshma looks ravishing and justifies her role. Their on-screen chemistry, which is the lifeline of the film, is perfect. Although Rachita Ram does steal the show in her role as a lawyer, the scenes needed to be better. Senior actors like Charan Raj and Shashikumar, along with Suchendra Prasad lend depth to the narratives with their presence and performance.

However, the antagonists Arjun Gowda and Yash Shetty have little presence. Composer Arjun Janya and DoP Mahendra Simha are the strengths of Ek Love Ya. The melodious songs, perfect picturisation, and slick cinematography makes the film visually appealing. Points to the stunt choreography too for delivering a few creative sequences. With lovely locales and a colourful vibe to the proceedings, it is clear that Ek Love Ya has rich production qualities. However, the film’s length does not work for the film, but the romantic drama with a solid twist is definitely a one-time watch.

Director Prem, after much backlash for his underwhelming previous outing 'The Villain', is back with a love story. He is out to explore true love, which, according to him, is about loving just one person forever. Hence the title 'Ek Love Ya'.

Now it's not the concept that's as old as the hills. The generalisation of men and women, dollops of melodrama, glass shattering action scenes, and a song at the drop of the hat -- everything that Prem does in 'Ek Love Ya' is astonishingly outdated. Aimed as a launch vehicle for Prem's brother-in-law Raana, the film is a confused and exhaustive affair that runs over two hours and 30 minutes. Prem is undecided between making an intense love story or a well-balanced family entertainer.

Amar (Raanna), an aspiring lawyer, is an alcoholic addict. No prizes for guessing the reason for his addiction. So how did he suffer from love failure? You get a customary flashback. It's about how Amar falls in love with Anitha (Reeshma Nanaiah) in school before the latter 'breaks' his heart in college.

It's appalling how directors don't believe in registering strong chemistry between the leads in love stories. Isn't it a basic writing decision? Instead, Prem makes the hero and his three friends (who are extremely caricaturish) run behind the girl.

With such a wafer-thin story, the director tries to hold the film together with visually-rich songs. The combined effort of music director Arjun Janya and cinematographer Mahendra Simha is the film's only consolation. A serious incident turns the film into a thriller but it doesn't change the film's quality. It remains ordinary throughout.

The leads don't make a great impression while Rachita Ram stars in an insignificant role. It doesn't help that she oversells all her scenes. Suchendra Prasad's loud acting wraps up the poor show from the cast. 'Ek Love Ya' is a disappointment for serious commercial cinema lovers. Even if it's targetted at people who see entertainment as 'time pass', don't they deserve fresh content marked with sensitivity?

When you demand Prem♡s to make a film without the mother sentiment (flashback or not), then the result is an over confident silly mess called EkLoveYa. A launch pad for his brother in law Raanna, the efforts to glorify him is quite evident. But the screenplay is incoherent and the story is all over the place.

It moves into a different zone altogether in the interval twist as well as the multiple twists that follows in the last 15 minutes. It is just isn't enough to save this film as these portions don't sync well with the rest of the film. Not that a love story cannot turn into a crime thriller, one…

When you ask Prem to create a film without the typical mother sentiment, the result is the overly confident yet absurd mess called "EkLoveYa." Serving as a launch pad for his brother-in-law Raanna, the blatant efforts to glorify him overshadow the incoherent screenplay and scattered storyline.

The movie takes a bizarre turn at the interval twist and subsequent multiple twists in the last 15 minutes, failing to integrate seamlessly with the rest of the film. While a love story can transition into a crime thriller, the lack of careful consideration for character arcs, except the hero's, is evident. The poorly written characters, including the wasted role of Rachita Ram, contribute little to the main story, burdening the film with unnecessary songs and cringeworthy double-meaning scenes.

Prem♡s needs a break to reevaluate his approach before diving into his next project.

Poor age old writing with cringe lame jokes ,lyrics in song also doesn’t make any sense  AJ has given some good work ,Rachita as always overacts,Raana is good but need to work on dialogue delivery,Reeshma is good,comfortable and chemistry worked well ,kodagu locations were good but accent in doesn’t make sense,graphics and vfx are colourful jaatre, showman prem avoided his signature mother sentiment by cutting of that role ,court room scenes are parody

Amar is a law student who gets rejected by Anita. Heart-broken Amar becomes a drunkard. After an incident, Amar changes his mind and starts leading a normal life. But, fate has some other plan. He gets arrested for a crime, and his life becomes a question mark. What happens next forms the rest of the story.

Star Performance

Raanna performed well in his role as Amar. He doesn’t look like a debutant and has performed naturally. Rachita Ram and Reeshma have done what was required for their roles. Charan Raj, Suchendra Prasad, and Shashikumar did their best. Rakshita appears in a cameo role.

Though the film is shot in a non-linear pattern in the first half, it manages to engage the audience. Prem is strong in the narration, and the sentimental scenes worked out well. The cinematography and the music serve the two main pillars of the film, apart from its story, direction and actors. The second half also has some exciting elements, and Prem has dealt with a social issue. Though a few commercial elements travel in between the film, the climax brings a depth to the story.

The film is a complete commercial entertainer with some good performances. With the good performances, visuals, music, and direction, the film is definitely worth watching once!

Ek Love Ya OTT release: When and where to watch Raanna and Reeshma Nanaiah’s romantic drama

Ek Love Ya, which released in theatres on February 24, was the launchpad for two actors – Raanna and Reeshma Nanaiah. Raanna is the brother of the film’s producer, Rakshitha Prem, and, as such, director Prem’s brother-in-law, while Reeshma’s claim to fame was winning a Bengaluru talent hunt. Naturally, the focus of Ek Love Ya was Raanna, for who the film became a showcase of what all he is capable of as an artiste.

In the run-up to the film’s release, Raanna had said that he had been preparing for his big-screen outing for a while, including by assisting Prem on his last directorial, The Villain, which had Shivarajkumar and Sudeep in the lead. When Ek Love Ya eventually released, it did so to mixed reviews, but did fairly well at the box office, largely due to the film’s good music by Arjun Janya, which included the hit number Yaare Yaare, sung by Armaan Malik, and Raanna’s onscreen histrionics.

Ek Love Ya follows a set of standard tropes, a love story, tragedy, and revenge, which allows Raanna, as Amar, to sport three different looks in the film. As the romantic interest, Reeshma’s Anitha, was pretty much confined to song-and-dance sequences, which not only sounded great, but were also beautifully captured by cinematographer Mahen Simha. The film also had Rachita Ram to complete a love triangle.

If you missed watching the film in theatres, not to worry, it is now headed to OTT and you will be able to stream it starting April 8 on Zee5.
