Old school presentations (meaning before technology) were augmented by slides, overhead projectors, chalkboards, whiteboards and flip charts. Then in 1987, PowerPoint was released, not by Microsoft as often believed, but by Forethought . Microsoft acquired it shortly after its release, and with that acquisition, we started down the road toward “Death by PowerPoint.”

The advent of presentation software allowed presenters to not only complement their facts and figures with visuals but also to place most of the information on slides so they would not forget anything important. Death by PowerPoint should more accurately be named Death by Lazy Presenters.

Presentation strategy went through the phases of clip art, images and text fading in and out, multiple text colors, fonts and sizes, bolding and italicizing, creative bars and graphs and images strategically placed. Through it all there has been the one constant; bullet-pointed text. The bullet shapes and type font/size may have changed, but the results did not. Lots of words on the screen, with the presenter simply regurgitating what the audience could read for themselves. Over time, presentations have become more boring, more predictable and less engaging.

In my teaching of presentation skills and coaching of presenters, I share my experiences over 40 years of business presenting. I was fortunate to have begun that experience at Apple in the early 1980s. Apple was expected to be different, creative and nonconforming. Bullet points were not encouraged.

In fact, Steve Jobs would not allow slides in any presentation which he attended. I learned from that experience that audiences respond positively to engaging presentations, and I learned that using technology to enhance, rather than dominate presentations, provided me with a competitive advantage over my conforming competitors who were uncomfortable being different.

What follows is a snapshot of what I share with my students and coaching clients. These are tips and suggestions to make you a better and more compelling presenter. They mostly follow my three objectives for any presentation: inform, engage and entertain. These three objectives help ensure that presentations feel like conversations, which I believe audiences prefer.

Housekeeping

There are a few things to think about prior to the presentation. If possible, visit the place of the meeting prior to the event. This allows you to get comfortable with the space and check out lighting, seat placement, power outlets, etc. It also gives you the opportunity to become familiar with how your computer will connect to any projector that is there. On the day of the presentation, double-check your computer and slides and have your content on a thumb drive in case your computer decides not to cooperate.

Content Preparation

Prepare your content as if you were going to be in the audience. What would be most meaningful and how could it be presented to allow for that all-important audience engagement? What do they already know, so you can avoid boring them with repeated information? Is everything relevant to the topic and the goal of the meeting for the audience?

• Focus on simplicity. You don’t need a “welcome” slide or even an agenda slide. Also, delete those pesky “transition” slides which denote moving from one point to the next. Text should be minimal, with only one point on a slide. Stay away from bullet points. Your audience will be reading whatever is in front of them, and that means they are not listening to you. Express your point with an image rather than words. Research proves people remember images more than text .

• Use consistent visuals. Page backgrounds and font types should stay the same from page to page. You don’t need your logo, meeting name, date, location, etc. on each slide. Use font sizes that are easy to read from the back of the room. If using an image, make sure it is of high quality and covers the entire slide.

• Proofread your slides. This will ensure you don’t have typos or mistakes. During your review, you can look for areas where you could make your message simpler.

• Avoid graphs, charts and spreadsheets. Data can be much better displayed by using images with simple text. If you must use charts and the works, make them as simple as possible, focusing only on the pertinent information. Only use spreadsheets when absolutely necessary, and then only display the section of rows and columns that contain the useful information.

• Remember the good slide rule. If the audience cannot “get” (i.e., understand) the intent of your slide in five seconds or less, it needs to be made simpler. You want the audience to listen to you, not try to figure out your visuals.

Presenter Preparation

This is where you have to put the work in. If the power were to go out and you couldn’t use your technology and you are not capable of giving the presentation verbally, then you are not prepared.

• Know your content. You must be able to carry the conversation, using your visuals simply as conversation starters. Rehearse your delivery to make sure you transition smoothly from one point to the next and you can keep the audience engaged.

• Understand presenter mechanics. Keep your eye connection with the audience, and never read from the screen. Get your laptop in a position where you can easily glance at your presenter’s notes if needed. Remember to smile; you’re supposed to be enjoying the engagement.

• Rehearse your open and close. These are the major elements of your presentation. You should have an opening that grabs their attention and a close that moves them toward the next step.

To paraphrase Maya Angelou, people may not remember what you said or did, but they will always remember how you made them feel. Make your audiences feel connected with you, not your technology.

More than 2,000 F-16 aircraft are flying worldwide, with the fourth-generation platform still maintaining relevance in an airspace increasingly being contested by fifth-generation aircraft.

Northrop Grumman ’s AN/ALQ-257 Integrated Viper Electronic Warfare Suite (IVEWS) has completed US Air Force (USAF) testing in the service’s Joint Preflight Integration of Munitions and Electronic Sensors (J-PRIMES) facility.

During a series of tests, AN/ALQ-257 IVEWS was subjected to a series simulated complex radio frequency spectrum threats in the J-PRIMES anechoic chamber. The system demonstrated the ability to detect, identify and counter advanced radio frequency threats while operating safely with other F-16 systems, the company announced in a 4 September 2024 release.

The completion of this process allows AN/ALQ-257 IVEWS to begin flight testing on USAF F-16 aircraft.

James Conroy, vice president, navigation, targeting and survivability at Northrop Grumman, said the testing completion marked the IVEWS “readiness to protect US and international F-16 fleets”.

Meanwhile, USAF Colonel Michael Rigoni, director, F-16 International Electronic Warfare Systems, said the results were the “culmination” of three years of “extensive” US government system-level testing.

In 2022, Northrop Grumman secured a contract to advance the integration of the AN/ALQ-257 IVEWS onto the USAF’s F-16 fighter fleet.

Insight into new USAF EW system

The AN/ALQ-257 IVEWS is designed to give F-16 electronic warfare (EW) capabilities on a par with fifth-generation aircraft, significantly enhancing survivability for operations in contested electromagnetic spectrum environments.

Northrop Grumman states that its ultra-wideband suite can detect, identify, and counter advanced radio frequency threats, including millimetre wave systems, and has pulse-to-pulse interoperability with the AN/APG-83 SABR active electronically scanning array (AESA) radar fitted to USAF F-16 fighters.

The system was selected as the US programme of record for F-16 electronic warfare in 2019.

North America forecast to lead global EW market

According to a 2023 GlobalData forecast of the global EW market, the sector, valued at $13.9bn in 2023, was projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 4.6% through to 2033, reaching $21.8bn.

Split into four segments (airborne, land, naval, and space), the market was forecast to be dominated by the airborne market, which accounts for 55.1% of the sector, followed by land with a 28.3% share.

Among geographic segments, North America was projected to dominate the sector with a share of 34.1%, followed by Asia-Pacific and Europe, with shares of 29.0% and 27.3%, respectively.
