What Are Figures of Speech?

Figures of speech are creative and imaginative expressions used in language to convey meaning in a non-literal way. They add depth, vividness, and emphasis to our communication by employing various linguistic devices. Here are five examples of figures of speech:

Simile – A simile is a figure of speech that compares two different things using “like” or “as” to highlight a shared characteristic.

For example: “He runs as fast as a cheetah” or “Her voice is as sweet as honey.”

Metaphor – Metaphor is a figure of speech that also compares two different things, but without using “like” or “as.” It directly states that one thing is another, creating a symbolic or imaginative connection.

For example: “Life is a journey” or “Her heart is made of stone.”

Hyperbole – Hyperbole is a figure of speech that involves exaggerated or extravagant statements not meant to be taken literally. It emphasizes a point through exaggerated language.

For example: “I’ve told you a million times!” or “I’m so hungry I could eat a horse!”

Personification – Personification is a figure of speech that attributes human qualities or actions to non-human things or abstract concepts. It brings inanimate objects or ideas to life by giving them human characteristics.

For example: “The sun smiled down on us” or “The wind whispered through the trees.”

Onomatopoeia – Onomatopoeia is a figure of speech that uses words that imitate or mimic the sounds they represent. It creates a vivid auditory effect.

For example: “The bees buzzed around the flowers” or “The thunder rumbled in the distance.”

How Do Authors Use This Technique?

Authors use figures of speech as a form of figurative language in literature for several reasons:

Enhancing Descriptions

Figures of speech bring richness and vividness to descriptions in literature. By using imaginative language, authors can paint a more detailed and engaging picture in the readers’ minds. Figures of speech add depth, color, and sensory imagery to the writing, making the scenes, characters, and settings come alive.

Figures of speech add depth and layers of meaning to the writing. By using creative language devices, authors can convey complex ideas, explore abstract concepts, or express multiple interpretations. Figures of speech provide a means to express deeper thoughts, symbolize themes, or convey subtle nuances that go beyond literal language

Evoking Emotions and Senses

Figures of speech have the power to evoke strong emotions in readers. By using expressive and metaphorical language, authors can tap into the readers’ emotions and create a deeper emotional connection. Figures of speech allow authors to convey complex emotions, create moods, and elicit specific feelings within readers.

Figures of speech appeal to the senses, making the reading experience more immersive. By incorporating sensory imagery, authors stimulate the readers’ senses of sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell. This sensory engagement enhances the readers’ immersion in the story and helps them connect with the narrative on a more visceral level.

Captivating and Memorable Writing

Figures of speech make writing more captivating and memorable. By employing imaginative and evocative language, authors create a distinct voice and style. Figures of speech engage readers’ attention, leaving a lasting impact on their memory. They make the writing stand out, capturing readers’ interest and drawing them into the world of the story.

Figures of speech serve specific literary purposes and effects. They can create irony, humor, suspense, or dramatic tension. Figures of speech allow authors to play with language, create wordplay, or develop unique metaphors that add richness to the narrative. These literary effects enhance the overall reading experience and make the literature more engaging and thought-provoking.

Metaphor, simile and idiom worksheets

Figurative language makes descriptions more interesting.  A simile compares two things using the words like or as.   Metaphors compare things by saying one thing is another thing.  Idioms are common expressions which have figurative (not literal) meanings; they are often metaphors. • Figurative Language Poems with Questions

Poetry is a rich source of figurative language. Though there are examples of figurative language to be found in all genres of literature, perhaps none more than in poetry. Good poets pack worlds of meaning into tiny little lines. These lines evoke emotions, thoughts, and at times social change. One of the ways that poets perform these linguistic miracles is with the use of figurative language. This page contains a selection of poems that I find to be rich with figurative language .

Each poem also includes a sampling of comprehension, inference, review, and discussion questions, so that they are ready for classroom use. Learn more about how I study figurative language in the classroom with my figurative language lesson and unit plans .

Whenever I become stuck, wondering what direction I might take, I look at your sheets and see things which either fit the bill or inspire me to try something new. So few teachers have money to spend on the very things we need to improve. Your help is gratefully appreciated.

Mr. Morton, Thank you for such a wonderful and resourceful site. I have used your materials for a number of years, and my students always do well on their state tests.

You offer such a wide variety and large number of activities on the same topic that I am able to use many as instructional and practice materials and still have several worksheets or activities to use as review just prior to the spring tests.

I hope you know how much you are appreciated! I just can’t say enough good things about you and this site.

Figures of Speech Worksheets

Related ela standard: l.7.5.a.

A figure of speech is a word or phrase that comes off in a completely different manner from its literal meaning. Often figures of speech are used to engage readers and make them think more deeply towards the purpose of the assertion. Figures of speech often attempt to make the writing more human and put a personal touch on what is being examined. The goal of a figure of speech is to leave a mark on your audience. This is usually accompanied with astonishment or laughter. There are a wide range of vehicles to help you achieve this. Some of provide human traits to inanimate objects. How to Identify Figures of Speech

Figures of speech are the elements in the written text of any language that mean something else in a given context rather than giving their literal meaning. These are important to any text, especially the literary and fictional text, to make the reader understand a point with clarity and to convey a deeper sense indirectly with the usage of a few words than that would have to be used if the direct idea had to be stated. The connotative meanings of the figures of speech are widely known to the audience and sometimes, even if it is not widely known, the reader easily understands them taking the meaning from the context. There are a lot of figurative elements in the English language that are used for different purposes. Some of these are as follows:

Here are some of the figures of speech that are commonly used in text and conversations. The explanations of these figures of speech will help you in identifying them easily.

A simile is a figure of speech that is widely used to compare two things and to show a similarity between two very distinct phenomena based on a particular aspect. A simile uses the words like as, just like, similar to, like, etc. to show a comparison between the ideas under discussion. An example of a simile used in a sentence can be “He is as brave as a lion.”

The comparison is usually done between two entities that are very unlike each other. For example, She was acting like a frog. He was running like a wolf. She is as brave as a lioness. The child is behaving like a clown.

A metaphor performs the same function as that performed by a simile in the statements. The only difference is that a metaphor used regards one thing as some other thing based on some aspect of its quality that the other thing is famous for. Moreover, there is no use of comparative terms like as, just like, etc. in a statement with metaphor. An example of metaphor's use in a sentence can be “He is a lion.”

A metaphor is that figure of speech that is used to make a direct comparison between two different entities. The metaphor can be used when you want to put immense focus on a trait of a person that is very much alike to something. For example, The child is a clown. She was a frog. He was a wolf. She is a lioness.

The irony is an interesting figure of speech. It is used when you want to create a mocking effect in the text. Irony occurs when there is a conflict or difference between what is being said and the actual meaning. For example, Mother said "how wonderful", when I told her I had to work on Sundays. The unsinkable Titanic sank on its first voyage.

Personification

Personification is a figure of speech that gives human-like qualities and emotions to a non-living thing to increase its importance and stress on the ideas associated with it in a statement.

Personification is that figure of speech that is used to give the traits of a human being to non-human entities. This figure of speech is used in the literature mostly to give the details of something. For example, The tea branches danced with the breeze. The storm ate up the entire town.

The oxymoron is the figure of speech that occurs when two contradicting words combine. For example, Sweet sorrow Peace force
