International Relations Online / Student Experience / Study Abroad

american university online phd international relations

The School of International Service (SIS) Office of International Programs (OIP) organizes a variety of optional experiential learning programs abroad throughout the year for International Relations Online students. These programs are designed to provide SIS online students with access to a diverse portfolio of international opportunities—experiences that will complement their studies at SIS and help them broaden their international perspectives.

Opportunities include AU faculty-led summer programs, semester abroad, and select summer courses offered at partner institutions abroad. SIS OIP may also be able to provide resources for students to seek out summer internships abroad through AU Abroad, as well as through the connections of SIS faculty and alumni abroad. Program locations change to reflect student needs and interests.

The diverse portfolio of programs provides a chance for students from different backgrounds to explore opportunities that best fit their needs and schedules. Programs can range from six months abroad at a partner school to two to four weeks abroad during the summer. Pre-departure meetings are typically hosted in the early evening (EST) to work around students’ schedules.

Please note: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, American University has temporarily suspended all spring and summer 2021 study abroad programs. SIS Abroad will offer several online/virtual opportunities that are similar to previous summer study abroad offerings and hopes to resume normal summer abroad options in 2022.

Summer 2021 Virtual Courses

The following are representative of the virtual courses offered to students while normal summer abroad operations were suspended:

  • Geopolitical Frontiers in the South Caucasus
  • International Affairs with the Graduate Institute
  • International Security and Intelligence with the Cambridge Security Initiative

This summer we are not offering practica abroad — explore our upcoming practica offerings online and on campus.

Why Study Abroad?

The goal of International Relations Online is to help students gain a global perspective so they can succeed in the field of international affairs. Study abroad opportunities help students apply the skills they gain from their courses and build intercultural competency by:

  • analyzing and interpreting conflicts that involve people of different cultures while experiencing them firsthand
  • gaining real-world experience with the concepts they learn in the classroom
  • collaborating with peers in groups acting as consultants for international organizations
  • networking with influential organizations, world leaders, and American University’s top faculty

“The South Africa summer study abroad was life-changing! We learned from leading scholars at UCT [University of Cape Town] discussing a variety of issues concerning South Africa, including foreign policy, inequality, education, HIV/AIDS, economic and political history, domestic politics, environment sustainability, and much more.”

Sichao Ni, International Relations Online Study Abroad Student, Cape Town, South Africa

Available Study Abroad Programs

Study abroad programs led by SIS faculty include an online component and an abroad component. The online component—which includes one to two meetings per week before and after the program—prepares students for their time abroad and facilitates further discussion after they return. The duration of time abroad varies by course, ranging from two to four weeks and averaging about two weeks. These options are available to all students in the Master of Arts in International Relations and Executive Master of International Service programs. Programs can be competitive—submitting an application does not guarantee admission.

Short-Term Summer Abroad Courses

During the summer, SIS offers a portfolio of short-term, experiential courses facilitated by SIS faculty and at SIS partner schools. These courses include lectures, discussions, workshops, and site visits. Courses change every year, based on student interest and faculty availability, but always cover a broad range of issues in IR. New summer courses abroad are typically announced in mid-November in the SIS OIP newsletter, with applications due in early February. Short-term summer abroad options include:

Course at SIS Partner School

Typically 2-4 weeks abroad

Students can earn 3 credits through a course offered by an SIS partner school. Students will receive a transcript and academic credit through the partner school. SIS OIP will manage the process of transferring these credits to AU.

SIS Faculty-Led Practicum Course

Typically 2-4 weeks abroad, with meetings in the U.S. prior to/post travel

This faculty-led program fulfills the SIS capstone requirement. Students spend the summer semester working in teams with clients abroad, drawing on their substantial research, as well as qualitative and quantitative skills, to prepare final oral and written analyses and recommendations. Practicums are designed to give second-year master’s students real-world experiences in project management and consulting, while preparing them for postgraduate careers. Credit is awarded by AU.

SIS Faculty-Led Seminar Course

Unlike the practicum, this faculty-led seminar does not fulfill the SIS capstone requirement and does not include a client-based project. Depending on the course topic and location, students may visit local organizations, NGOs, government offices, and sites of cultural importance, and conduct research on the course topic. Credit is awarded by AU.

Semester Abroad Courses

While short-term opportunities fit the needs of many of our students, we also offer longer-term semester abroad opportunities . Examples of previous courses include:

Freetown, Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone is one of the world’s poorest countries, still recovering from a decade-long civil war and, more recently, an outbreak of Ebola. Students traveled there for two weeks to investigate how officials across levels—including the UN, international NGOs, and community-based organizations—partner to achieve shared development goals.

Practicum Experiences

During a summer practicum experience, students consult with an international client while producing original research that is relevant to the community, country, or broader region. Examples of previous summer practicum programs include:

Ketura, Israel (3 credits)

This practicum focused on the three-year Arava/PWEG “Green Technologies in Cooperative Date Farming” project launched in 2017. The project engaged Palestinian and Israeli farming communities in joint cooperative and learning efforts as a peace- and confidence-building measure. The principal research task of the program was to assess the project at its midway point.

Copenhagen, Denmark (3 credits)

During this course, students studied cyber conflict in the area; how cyber tactics are used for coercion; and to what extent the conflict spills over into the commercial space, creating new markets for malware and cybercrime. The course included a visit to NATO’s “northern flank” Scandinavian and Baltic countries and concluded with a student presentation on how government and corporate partners forecast the future of cyber conflict in the region.

Yogyakarta, Indonesia (3 credits)

Students spent roughly two weeks in Indonesia conducting project design, monitoring, and evaluation tasks with local NGOs. The partner for the practicum was VIA, a nonprofit organization that specializes in cross-cultural understanding and transformative education programs in Asia and the United States. Local NGOs included organizations that work in public health, human rights, development, interfaith dialogue, and other areas.

New Providence, Bahamas (3 credits)

Working virtually with the FOCUS program, a long-standing after-school program for historically underserved Bahamian youth, students developed relevant evaluation indicators, built an analytical plan, and began an evaluation of the program’s impact. They then presented their findings and future recommendations to foundation staff in person in the Bahamas, exercising intercultural competency skills as they engaged with our Bahamian partners.

International Internships

In structured international internship placements , students are directly supported by SIS faculty or connected through an AU Abroad Center. Faculty and staff select opportunities and organizations that are directly relevant to students’ academic and professional interests.

Graduate Global Program

The Graduate Global Program is a support system for students who want to conduct independent research, secure their own internships, and participate in other professional development activities such as conferences or workshops abroad. Academic advisors and the SIS Office of International Programs (OIP) can help students to:

  • connect with relevant faculty or institutions abroad
  • register their activities (regardless of whether they are credit- or non-credit-bearing)
  • acquire emergency international health insurance
  • find alternative funding sources

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for study abroad opportunities, International Relations Online students must:

  • Hold status as a graduate student at American University. Non-AU graduate students may only apply to select programs (see program-specific pages for eligibility).
  • Achieve and maintain good academic and university standing.
  • Submit an approved plan of study. As part of the application process, students should meet with their academic advisors to get approval for the courses they plan to take.

Each program will have additional eligibility requirements listed on its respective website. To learn more about study abroad opportunities, visit the Office of International Programs or contact them via e-mail .

Political Science and International Relations (PhD)

The Department of Political Science and International Relations currently offers a Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) degree, which consists of coursework during the first six semesters followed by dissertation research and writing. Students earn an M.A. as part of their Ph.D. studies.

The program prepares students for occupations related to several aspects of political science, but primarily for joining the professoriate, as college and university professors.

Field Descriptions

American politics.

The American politics field broadly encompasses institutions (including Congress, the presidency, and the courts), mass behavior (including public opinion and political participation) and political organizations (like parties and interest groups). Our research program and courses are theoretically driven, but also offer opportunities for students and faculty alike to engage in applied politics. We have particular strengths in the study of political psychology, gender and politics, and race and ethnic politics.

Comparative Politics

Comparative Politics as a sub-field is a wide and diverse area of study that deals with politics beyond the U.S. It embraces a range of methodological and theoretical approaches. At the University of Delaware, our comparative politics faculty conduct research in gender and politics in Africa, governance in Africa, comparative political economy with a focus on Europe, populism in Latin America, regionalism in Asia, religion and politics in the Middle East, and ethnic conflict.

International Relations

International Relations (IR) is the study of international and transnational politics broadly understood.   Work in the IR subfield is attentive to exchanges and processes among states, peoples, corporations and other economic activity, organizations, transnational actors and movements, as well among the global, regional, and local levels of politics. The IR faculty at the University of Delaware conduct research in areas of historical IR and the historical evolution of the international system; normative IR theory; conflict and peace-building; international security; security studies; political economy; gender and IR; human rights and human security; and global, regional, and transnational governance.

Political Theory and Law

The subfield of Political Theory consists of offerings in political theory and law. The political theory subfield focuses on the conceptual frameworks we use to understand, explain, and evaluate our political world. Our faculty includes specialists in both theory and law, many of whom overlap with other subfields in the discipline and who have interdisciplinary ties with fields including Legal Studies, Women and Gender Studies, Sexuality and Gender Studies, and Islamic Studies. Our department includes the study of both the history of ideas and contemporary political and social theory, with strengths in critical theory, modern and postmodern political theory, feminist and queer theory, democratic theory, and Islamic political thought.

Supporting tomorrow's leaders, scholars and innovators

The University of Delaware holistically supports its graduate students, beginning with their health and wellbeing . Benefits include a subsidized health plan and physical and behavioral health services. UD fosters a culture of academic excellence , with committed faculty and staff and access to state-of-the-art research facilities and technology. Offered by the School of International Service   , the International Relations (PhD) program enables students to produce knowledge for careers in university teaching and research, government, and non-governmental organizations both in the United States and internationally. The curriculum provides training in international relations that is both multi-disciplinary and policy-relevant. The core courses in international relations, comparative social theory, comparative and regional studies, and methodology provide a foundation that allows students considerable flexibility to pursue additional coursework, research, and writing in international affairs. Major emphasis is placed on research and all students are required to successfully defend an original dissertation of their own design that makes a contribution to knowledge in their chosen area. In addition to completing the dissertation, students are encouraged to present conference papers, engage in collaborative work with faculty members, and submit articles to refereed journals.

Admission to the Program

Applicants for the PhD degree program must hold an accredited bachelor’s or master’s degree, or its equivalent, in a field related to international relations. Applicants must have a prior cumulative grade point average that is substantially above B (3.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale) for coursework relevant to international relations.

The program is designed for study on a full-time basis. Applicants for the PhD degree are considered and admitted only for the fall semester each year. The school does not permit students to begin their doctoral work in the spring. Deferral of matriculation in the PhD program is not permitted. In order to be considered for fall admission, applications and all supporting materials must reach the SIS Graduate Admissions Office no later than December 15.

All applicants are required to submit results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Non-native English speakers are required to submit results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) unless they hold a degree from a US-accredited institution before enrollment at SIS. The minimum TOEFL score for full admissions consideration is 100 on the Internet-based test (iBT) or 600 on the paper-based test (PBT). The minimum IELTS score is 7.0. Applicants should plan to take the appropriate test well in advance of the December 15 deadline.

All applicants must submit at least three letters of reference which evaluate their suitability for undertaking doctoral study in international relations. At least one of those letters must assess their academic performance. Cultural factors are considered in making admissions decisions and in evaluating transcripts and examination results.

Doctoral students may transfer up to 6 credit hours of previous graduate coursework earned at accredited institutions with a minimum grade of B in each course. Such credits must have been earned within five years of admission and must be relevant to a student’s program of study. Requests for transfer of graduate credit are considered during the student’s first term.

Degree Requirements

  • 39 credit hours of approved graduate work
  • Minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA in all graduate work is required to remain in good academic standing and to earn the degree
  • Proficiency in a modern foreign language: Research competence in English and another modern foreign language relevant to the student’s career objectives must be certified
  • The first or qualifying examination is normally taken at the end of the first year. The qualifying exam requires the demonstration of competency in theoretical, epistemological, and methodological literature and issues in international relations, comparative social theory, and comparative and regional studies. These areas are addressed in the core seminars that students normally complete during their first year of residence, although the scope of the examination is not limited to topics covered in the seminars
  • A second examination, the Field Comprehensive Examination, is in a student’s chosen field of specialization. This Comprehensive Field Examination is a scholarly paper in which students must demonstrate knowledge of the scholarly literature related to a research question approved by their Field Concentration Chair. With the permission of the SIS Director of Doctoral Studies and the advice of at least three qualified scholars, the student may also construct a special field
  • The SIS Director of Doctoral Studies chairs the prospectus defense. The examiners also include the student’s dissertation committee, which is comprised of a minimum of three members, one of whom serves as chair and as the primary supervisor of the dissertation research. It is the responsibility of the student to secure the agreement of a full-time tenured member of the School of International Service faculty to serve as the chair of his or her dissertation committee. At least two members of the dissertation committee must be full-time, tenure-line members of the American University faculty. The members of the committee must be approved by the SIS Director of Doctoral Studies and the American University Doctoral Council
  • Students are normally expected to complete their prospectus defense no later than the end of the sixth semester after entering the program. For details on scheduling comprehensive examinations and examination procedures, consult the director of the PhD program or the SIS Graduate Office
  • Advancement to candidacy: To be advanced to candidacy, students must remedy any deficiencies specified at the time of admission, complete all graduate work, be certified as proficient in a modern foreign language in addition to English, have passed their written and oral examinations, have submitted certification of completion of Responsible Conduct of Research training, and have successfully defended their dissertation prospectus
  • Students must present a completed draft of their dissertation for defense. They are responsible for ensuring that the final draft of their dissertation meet university style requirements. Dissertations must be approved by the dean of the School of International Service
  • Statute of limitations: American University’s academic regulations provide that all graduate work for the doctorate must be completed in no more than nine years after the date of first enrollment as doctoral student. Prior to the expiration of that time limit, a student may petition for an extension of candidacy. Under compelling circumstances, students may apply for one-year extensions beyond the expected time to degree, with a maximum of three extensions. Students must petition the SIS Director of Doctoral Studies for each one-year extension; each extension must also be approved by the SIS Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Graduate Education and the Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Research
