A family tree is a hierarchical chart that details the connection between members of a family . You can create your own family tree in PowerPoint by using one of Microsoft's many hierarchy style SmartArt graphics. Here's how.

To get started, open PowerPoint and navigate to the "Insert" tab.

In the "Illustrations" group, click "SmartArt."

The "Choose a SmartArt Graphic" window will appear. In the left-hand pane, click the "Hierarchy" tab.

You'll now see a small collection of hierarchy SmartArt graphics. For standard family trees, the " Organizational Chart " option is ideal. However, you can choose whichever SmartArt graphic works best for you.

Select the chart you would like to use by clicking it.

Once selected, a preview and a description of the chart will appear in the right-hand pane. Click "OK" to insert the chart.

With the chart added to your presentation, you can start entering the names of the family members in each respective box. Do this by clicking the box and typing their name. The text will resize itself to fit the boxes automatically.

You can delete boxes you don't need by clicking the box to select it and then pressing the "Delete" key on your keyboard.

You can also add additional boxes below or above certain positions. To do this, highlight the box by clicking it.

Next, click the "Design" tab in the "SmartArt Tools" group.

In the "Create Graphic" group, click the arrow next to the "Add Shape" option.

A drop-down menu will appear. The option you select from the menu will depend on where you want to place the box with respect to the currently selected box. Here's what each option does:

• Add Shape After: Adds a box to the right, and on the same level, of the selected box.
• Add Shape Before: Adds a box to the left, and on the same level, of the selected box.
• Add Shape Above: Adds a box above the selected box.
• Add Shape Below: Adds a box below the selected box.
• Add Assistant: Adds a box between the level of the selected box and the level below.

In this example, assuming our fictional character Bryon had a child, we'd use the "Add Shape Below" option.

A box will now appear below our selected box.

Once the box is placed, enter the name of the respective family member. Repeat these steps until your family tree is complete.

You can also tweak the design or change the color of the chart. Click the chart to select it and then click the "Design" tab. In the "SmartArt Styles" group, you'll see a range of different styles to choose from, as well as the option to change colors.

Click the "Change Colors" option to show a drop-down menu, then select the color scheme you like best.

Next, choose a style you like from the lineup in the "SmartArt Styles" group. We'll use the "Inset" option.

Your chart will take on the selected color and style.

Play around with the styles and colors until you find one the works best for you.

Creating a family tree is an exciting thing, but it's always a collaborative effort. You can ask family members to collaborate on the presentation with you to ensure that no family members are left out. And remember to share the presentation with your family once the family tree is complete!

How to Create a Family Tree in MS PowerPoint

Creating a family tree in MS PowerPoint has many advantages. A family tree graphically demonstrates the relationships between family members. You can also add photos to individual names and be as creative as you want.

Method #1: Use Shapes 

This method uses simple shapes like ovals, rectangles, and lines, to create the family tree.

Step #1: Open a Presentation

Open a new presentation or an existing one.

Navigate to the slide where you want to introduce the family tree.

Step #2: Set up Title and Subtitle

Click on Click to add title and enter the title for the family tree.

Click on Click to add subtitle and enter a subtitle if necessary.

Position the title and subtitle using their individual handles, which are located on the edge of the text boxes, and indicated in red in our illustration.

Step #3: Insert Shapes

Click on the Insert tab in the top menu bar to change the ribbon.

In the section Illustrations , click on the Shapes icon.

This opens the Shapes menu.

Select a suitable shape from Basic Shapes .

Note: We have chosen the Hexagon shape for this example. You may choose any shape.

Step #4: Format the Shape

Click on the shape you have chosen.

The window will close, and your cursor will change to a cross.

Position the cursor at an empty place on the slide.

Click and drag the cursor to form a hexagon shape.

Use the handles to change the position and size of the shape.

Step #5: Enter Text in the Shape

Click on the shape you want to edit.

Right-click on an empty space inside the shape to open a menu.

Click on the Edit Text icon.

A cursor appears inside the shape.

Enter your required text.

Note: You may have to change the shape’s size to fit your text.

Step #6: Add More Shapes

Click on a shape.

Click on the Copy icon.

Right-click in an empty space outside the shape in your document, to open a menu.

Under Paste Options , click on the Keep Source Formatting(K) icon.

A copy of the shape will appear.

Use the handles to change the position of the new shape.

Note: You can also use CTRL+C and CTRL+V to copy and paste the shape.

Step #7: Add More Shapes

Repeat Step #6 to add as many shapes as you want.

Step #8: Change the Text inside the Shapes

Click on Edit Text .

Change the text to your requirement.

Repeat for all the shapes.

Note : You can also click on the shape and select the text inside to edit it.

Step #9: Add Lines

Select a suitable line from Lines .

Note : We have chosen the simple ‘Line’ option from the menu. You can choose any other.

The cursor changes to a cross.

Position the cursor where you want the line to start.

Click and drag the cursor to form a line.

At the same time, the ribbon changes to Shape Format .

Select Line from section Insert Shapes .

Draw lines to annotate your family tree.

Note: Keeping the Shift key pressed when drawing lines allows you to draw horizontal, vertical, and 45-degree lines. Use Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V to copy and draw lines.

Use handles to resize the lines.

Add more lines to complete the family tree.

Method #2: Use SmartArt 

This method uses built-in graphics to draw a family tree template.

Step #2: Set up a Title/Subtitle for the Family Tree

Step #3: Insert a SmartArt Graphic

In the section Illustrations , click on the SmartArt icon.

This opens the SmartArt dialog box.

In the left pane, select the Hierarchy option.

The middle pane shows many graphics for hierarchical relationships, like family trees.

Select the one most suitable to your requirement.

For our example, we have selected the first graphic. You can select any other.

The right pane shows an image of the graphic and its explanation.

Click on the OK button at the bottom.

The dialog box closes, and the graphic appears in the document.

The ribbon at the top changes to SmartArt Design .

Step #5: Add More Shapes

In the ribbon, use the Add Shape, Promote , Demote , Right to Left , Move Up , and Move Down icons in the Create Graphic section to add and position more shapes.

• Add Shape: Adds a new shape below the selected shape.
• Promote: Promotes the selected shape to an upper level.
• Demote: Demotes the selected shape to a lower level.
• Right to Left: Transposes the graphic. You can toggle the transposition.
• Move Up: Moves the selected shape to the left of its adjacent shape.
• Move Down: Moves the selected shape to the right of its adjacent shape.

The family tree now looks like this.

Step #5: Edit the Text in the Graphic

Click on the family tree graphic.

Click on the left arrow, situated on the border of the graphic, to open the Type your text here dialog box on the left.

Replace all the [Text] in the dialog box with your own text.

Repeat for all shapes in the graphic.

Note: You can also click inside a shape to select and edit the text.

Step #6: Close the Text Editing Box

Click on the X on top of the Type your text here dialog box to close it.

The family tree now looks like this:

Once MS PowerPoint is launched, select a blank slide and open it. Click on “ Ctrl + A ” and then Delete to select and remove the textbox present on the slide. Now, you will have a clean slide to work on.

To create a family tree in PowerPoint, we will go to the “Illustrations” section in the Insert Tab and click on “ SmartArt .” A popup window will appear where you will be asked to select the desired chart type. Scroll down to hereditary, select a chart, and click ok. The graph will be placed on your slide.

Step 4 – Enter Text and Edit

Now, enter text in the chart and edit it according to your requirements. You can use the home tab to edit fonts change color, and style. You can also add images by going to the dash section in the Insert Tab and clicking on the image. There are a few other basic tools under the Design, Animation, Transition, Home, and Insert Tab in PowerPoint, which you can also use. PowerPoint does not give you a wide range of drawing tools to play with, but it is perfect for creating a simple family tree.

Step 5 – Finalize and Save

Once the family tree in PowerPoint is complete, you can save it by clicking on save or save as options under the file tab.

Step 1 – Launch EdrawMax 

Download EdrawMax or try it online for free. Log in with social media credentials like a Google account.

Step 2 – Launch Drawing Tab

Edraw Max offers many templates for family trees, which you can use to create a family tree quickly. For this tutorial, we will select a blank template to make a family tree from scratch. It will launch a new drawing tab in the browser.

Step 3 – Make a Family Tree

To make a family tree, you can use the Symbol Library present on the left side of the screen. Click on the icon present next to the Symbol Library and search for the family tree in the popup window. Click ok to launch family tree symbols in the symbol library. Now, you can use different shapes, lines, arrows, and family tree symbols available in the library to create a family tree from scratch.

To edit different elements of your family tree further, you can use the formatting tool available on the right side of the screen. It allows you to change and adjust features like size, color, background, effects, animations, images, etc.

Steps 4 – Add Text and Other Details

Now, type in the text to label your family tree. You can adjust the color font and size of the text through the format tab. You can look further at images and other details to enhance your family tree.

How to Save Your Family Tree

After completing the family tree, you can save it by clicking on “Save” in the File Tab. Your file will be automatically saved on an Edraw cloud in your account. Edraw Max online also offers an “Export” feature in the File Tab, which allows you to save your document in the front common file formats such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, etc.

You can also save your file on cloud storage services like Google Drive and Dropbox by clicking on “Save As” in the File Tab.
