• The crew went inside the estate where they a heard sounds. When they reached the entrance of the house, they saw a person attacking them. In the meantime, the cop and doctor inside were frightened by a small girl. Michael and Durga were separated in the house where there they noticed a bloody stain.

The film was shot completely in Yercaud in an only-night shoot schedule, with scenes filmed in abandoned vintage properties. [3] [4]

The film was released across Tamil Nadu on 9 December 2022. A critic from Times of India noted it was "a well-staged paranormal thriller let down by a poorly-written climax", adding that "Karthik V gets most of it right and manages to give us an immersive theatrical experience". Raghu Thatha movie review: This Keerthy Suresh starrer elicits few laughs and is a tiresome watch

Raghu Thatha movie review: Writer Suman Kumar (who has worked on Guns & Gulaabs , Farzi and The Family Man) makes his directorial debut with Raghu Thatha starring Keerthy Suresh and an ensemble cast. One wonders why the title is Raghu Thatha (Grandfather Raghu), when the story completely revolves around Raghu’s granddaughter, Kayal (Keerthy Suresh) and her life. (Also Read: Keerthy Suresh was supposed to play a ‘human’ role in Kalki 2898 AD but said no. Is it Deepika Padukone or Disha's? )

Set in the late 1960s/early 1970s, Raghu Thatha takes us to the small town of Valluvanpettai in Tamil Nadu, where 25-year-old Kayalvizhi Pandian, or Kayal as she is called, lives. Now, Kayal is not a simple village belle – she has a degree, works in the Madras Central Bank and has some staunch principles that she lives by. She resides at home with her parents, brother and her beloved grandfather Raghu Thatha (MS Bhaskar).

Interestingly, Kayal, a feminist, is also a well-known author, who goes under the pseudonym K Pandian, as she believes people won’t read work by a woman. So, is there more to Kayal? Well, yes. She detests Hindi and has fought against the imposition of Hindi in the town and shut down the Ekta Sabha that opened there along with her grandfather. She follows Periyar. For her, Tamil is supreme and an identity she strongly holds on to.

While Kayal enjoys her writing success and her independence, constant parental pressure to get married hampers her happiness. And things take a dramatic turn when the family shockingly discovers that Raghu Thatha has stomach cancer. Her grandfather states he has three simple wishes to fulfil before he dies – to eat Buhari biryani in Madras, to take a photo with MG Ramchandran and to see Kayal’s marriage. Kayal finally succumbs to family pressure and decides to marry her friend Selvan (Ravindra Vijay), an engineer who works for the benefit of the people and believes in all that holds dear. The entire family is ecstatic when Kayal gets engaged and her future seems to be all that she had dreamt of. Or so it seems, till an anonymous letter stating that Kayal was author KP Pandian shatters her peace. Who sent that letter and why? What happens to her marriage?

What works, what doesn't

Do you remember director Visu’s or K Balachander’s female-centric films where the heroine was a feminist and dealt with patriarchy and social themes? Suman Kumar’s Raghu Thatha takes us back to those films which had strong, independent and intelligent women as its central characters. Unfortunately, that’s where the similarity ends. The screenplay/ writing of Raghu Thatha combines politics, feminism, patriarchy and a social theme or two with logical flaws, which makes the end result chaotic.

Sample this – Kayal will not tolerate patriarchy but when it comes to standing up to her fiancé, she turns into a mouse. For someone who has fought against Hindi imposition and upholds Periyar’s principles, she doesn’t think twice about taking a Hindi exam for her convenience. It just looks Kayal is really confused as to what she really stands for. Further, this film is touted as a comedy and yet, there are hardly any laughs in the film – except perhaps in the last 15 minutes. Dialogues that have been infused with supposed humour don’t really work as well and fall flat.

Keerthy Suresh as Kayal has done what is required for the role but it’s not a standout performance given the poor writing. Her character was flat and there’s no big transformation over the course of the film as one would expect. Again, Ravindra Vijay’s character Selvan should have been better penned to bring about the stark contrast between the first half and second half. MS Bhaskar, as always, does a good job as the grandfather, and Devadarshini shines as the maami. The rest of the characters don’t have much to do in the film.

Two aspects of the film that one does appreciate is the music by Sean Roldan and the cinematography by Yamini Yagnamurthy. Sean Roldan’s songs and BGM are typical of that era and Yamini has captured the vivid sceneries and life of that time beautifully in her frame. Editing a film well also adds to its success and that seems to be missing in this film. Some scenes were randomly inserted (e.g. Raghu Thatha meeting Selvan under the coconut tree), affecting the continuity of the film.

On the whole, Raghu Thatha is a misfire and a tiresome watch that neither makes us laugh nor cheer for Kayal.

Thangalaan: This Chiyaan Vikram starrer is a mythical drama that strikes gold with its powerful social commentary | Movie Review

Pa Ranjith’s Thangalaan, starring Chiyaan Vikram, was one of the most anticipated films of the year, and it’s clear that the buzz was well-deserved. Now that the film has finally arrived in theatres, it can be said with confidence that it lives up to the hype. Thangalaan is a breathtaking visual spectacle, elevated by powerful performances from its cast.

The film is set against the backdrop of a British-led expedition to unearth the gold mines of Kolar. Coloniser Clement strikes a deal with the tribe, led by Thangalaan (Vikram), offering them a share of the gold in exchange for their participation in the excavation.

Thangalaan is not just a mythical action drama; it’s a powerful narrative that tackles a significant social issue—the relentless struggle for power and the oppression of society’s marginalised. The film vividly portrays how the oppressed rise against their oppressors. Thangalaan, the central character, is a figure of immense physical strength and unyielding ambition. His deep-rooted desire to uplift his tribe drives him to make difficult choices, even if it means aligning with the very forces that seek to dominate them, all in pursuit of a better future for his people.

It is great how when a movie talks about something so serious, director Pa Ranjith weaves a mythical narrative into it making the movie more tantalising. Vikram is the undeniable heart and soul of Thangalaan, delivering a performance that is nothing short of extraordinary. As Thangalaan, he commands the screen with a potent mix of intensity and depth, fully embodying a character who is as conflicted within as he is challenged by the external dangers of his quest. Vikram doesn’t just play the role—he lives it, capturing the internal battle of a man torn between his ambitions and the harsh realities he faces. Parvathy, as Gangamma, Thangalaan’s wife, delivers a performance that is both impactful and memorable. Gangamma is far from a mere follower of her husband; she stands as a strong, independent character with her own perspective and influence within the story. Malavika Mohanan plays the role of Aarathi, and she too is fierce and powerful. Her initial few scenes as Aarathi is truly mindblowing.

Malavika Mohanan delivers a fierce and powerful performance as Aarathi, with her initial scenes being particularly striking. Cinematography by A. Kishor Kumar enhances the film, showcasing some truly remarkable visuals. While many scenes, especially those featuring lush greenery and aerial shots, are visually impressive, the sequences set in the mines could have been executed with greater finesse.

Certain parts of the movie, with their mythical elements, evoke a sense of horror, which adds a layer of fun. What’s truly impressive about the film is that it reveals much more beneath the surface. It unfolds like an onion, gradually peeling back layers to reveal deeper complexities.

The film consistently addresses caste politics, exploring the dynamics between the oppressor and the oppressed. Thangalaan's tribe is viewed with contempt by British officers, who exploit their naivety. Throughout the movie, Ranjith delivers a powerful critique of Brahminism and the Varna system. However, he maintains the tribe's dignity by not overtly favouring one side in his portrayal. The movie also explores a parallel theme of the corrupting power of greed. The relentless pursuit of gold, which drives everyone involved, including the tribe, clouds their judgment and distorts their rationality.

Ranjith addresses the issues of Brahminism and Buddhism with a balanced portrayal, presenting perspectives from both sides. Women in the film are depicted as individuals with distinct identities, rather than mere background figures. While the background score is effective, the music could have been more impactful. Given the story's intensity, stronger rhythms and beats might have been more fitting, but music director G. V. Prakash Kumar chose a folk style that, while enjoyable, lacks the power needed for the story.

Thangalaan stands out as one of Vikram's finest performances, offering him ample scope for acting and showcasing his skills. The first half of the film is deeply engaging, with several edge-of-your-seat moments. While the second half remains thrilling, it occasionally slows down. The climax is particularly powerful, delivering a compelling statement. Thangalaan is definitely a must-see in theatres, with its enchanting story and exceptional performances making it a spectacle that film enthusiasts shouldn't miss.

First announced in December 2021 with the working title Chiyaan 61, marking Vikram's 61st film as a lead actor, the official title was unveiled in October 2022. Principal photography commenced that month and was carried out intermittently at locations including Chennai, Andhra Pradesh, Madurai, and Karnataka, concluding by early July 2023. The film features music composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar, cinematography by A. Kishor Kumar, and editing by Selva RK.

Vikram's wife, Shailaja Balakrishnan has managed to carve out her own identity.

Chiyaan Vikram is an Indian actor, who primarily works in Tamil films, but has also acted in a few Malayalam movies. He is one of the most awarded actors in Tamil cinema and has received eight Filmfare Awards South, one National Film Award, four Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and the Kalaimamani Award from the Government of Tamil Nadu.
