essay ka meaning

An essay is, generally, a piece of writing that gives the author's own argument, but the definition is vague, overlapping with those of a letter, a paper, an article, a pamphlet, and a short story. Essays have been sub-classified as formal and informal: formal essays are characterized by "serious purpose, dignity, logical organization, length," whereas the informal essay is characterized by "the personal element, humor, graceful style, rambling structure, unconventionality or novelty of theme," etc.

Types of Essays

The type of essay will depend on what the writer wants to convey to his reader. There are broadly four types of essays. Let us see.

  • Narrative Essays: This is when the writer is narrating an incident or story through the essay. So these are in the first person. The aim when writing narrative essays is to involve the reader in them as if they were right there when it was happening. So make them as vivid and real as possible. One way to make this possible is to follow the principle of ‘show, don’t tell’. So you must involve the reader in the story.
  • Descriptive Essays : Here the writer will describe a place, an object, an event or maybe even a memory. But it is not just plainly describing things. The writer must paint a picture through his words. One clever way to do that is to evoke the senses of the reader. Do not only rely on sight but also involve the other senses of smell, touch, sound etc. A descriptive essay when done well will make the reader feel the emotions the writer was feeling at the moment.
  • Expository Essays: In such an essay a writer presents a balanced study of a topic. To write such an essay, the writer must have real and extensive knowledge about the subject. There is no scope for the writer’s feelings or emotions in an expository essay. It is completely based on facts, statistics, examples etc. There are sub-types here like contrast essays, cause and effect essays etc.
  • Persuasive Essays : Here the purpose of the essay is to get the reader to your side of the argument. A persuasive essay is not just a presentation of facts but an attempt to convince the reader of the writer’s point of view. Both sides of the argument have to presented in these essays. But the ultimate aim is to persuade the readers that the writer’s argument carries more weight.

Format of an Essay

Now there is no rigid format of an essay. It is a creative process so it should not be confined within boundaries. However, there is a basic structure that is generally followed while writing essays. So let us take a look at the general structure of an essay.

Introduction

This is the first paragraph of your essay. This is where the writer introduces his topic for the very first time. You can give a very brief synopsis of your essay in the introductory paragraph. Some paragraph writing skills can be a help here. Generally, it is not very long, about 4-6 lines.

essay ka meaning

There is plenty of scopes to get creative in the introduction of essays. This will ensure that you hook the reader, i.e. draw and keep his attention. So to do so you can start with a quote or a proverb . Sometimes you can even start with a definition. Another interesting strategy to engage with your reader is to start with a question.

This is the main crux of your essays. The body is the meat of your essay sandwiched between the introduction and the conclusion. So the most vital and important content of the essay will be here. This need not be confined to one paragraph. It can extend to two or more paragraphs according to the content.

Usually, we have a lot of information to provide in the body. And the mistakes writers generally make is to go about it in a haphazard manner which leaves the reader confused. So it is important to organize your thoughts and content. Write the information in a systematic flow so that the reader can comprehend. So, for example, you were narrating an incident . The best manner to do this would be to go in a chronological order.

Learn more about Story Writing here in detail .

This is the last paragraph of the essay. Sometimes a conclusion will just mirror the introductory paragraph but make sure the words and syntax are different. A conclusion is also a great place to sum up a story or an argument. You can round up your essay by providing some moral or wrapping up a story. Make sure you complete your essays with the conclusion, leave no hanging threads.

Tips for Essay Writing

  • Give your essays an interesting and appropriate title. It will help draw the attention of the reader and pique their curiosity
  • Keep it between 300-500 words. This is the ideal length, you can take creative license to increase or decrease it
  • Keep your language simple and crisp. Unnecessary complicated and difficult words break the flow of the sentence.
  • Do not make grammar mistakes , use correct punctuation and spellings . If this is not done it will distract the reader from the content
  • Before beginning the essay organize your thought and plot a rough draft . This way you can ensure the story will flow and not be an unorganized mess.

  • Essay Writing

ffImage

Introduction

In the simplest terms, an essay is a short piece of writing which is set around a specific topic or subject. The piece of writing will give information surrounding the topic but will also display the opinions and thoughts of the author. Oftentimes, an essay is used in an academic sense by way of examination to determine whether a student has understood their studies and as a way of testing their knowledge on a specific subject. An essay is also used in education as a way of encouraging a student to develop their writing skills.

Moreover; an essay is a focused piece of writing designed to inform or persuade. There are many different types of essays, but they are often defined in four categories: argumentative, expository, narrative, and descriptive essays. Argumentative and expository essays are focused on conveying information and making clear points, while narrative and descriptive essays are about exercising creativity and writing in an interesting way. At the university level, argumentative essays are the most common type.

Types of Essay Writing

When it comes to writing an essay, there is not simply one type, there are, quite a few types of essay, and each of them has its purpose and function which are as follows:

Narrative Essays

A narrative essay details a story, oftentimes from a particular point of view. When writing a narrative essay, you should include a set of characters, a location, a good plot, and a climax to the story. It is vital that when writing this type of essay you use fine details which will allow the reader to feel the emotion and use their senses but also give the story the chance to make a point.

Descriptive Essay

A descriptive essay will describe something in great detail. The subject can be anything from people and places to objects and events but the main point is to go into depth. You might describe the item’s color, where it came from, what it looks like, smells like, tastes like, or how it feels. It is very important to allow the reader to sense what you are writing about and allow them to feel some sort of emotion whilst reading. That being said, the information should be concise and easy to understand, the use of imagery is widely used in this style of essay.

Expository Essay

An expository essay is used as a way to look into a problem and therefore compare it and explore it. For the expository essay, there is a little bit of storytelling involved but this type of essay goes beyond that. The main idea is that it should explain an idea giving information and explanation. Your expository essay should be simple and easy to understand as well as give a variety of viewpoints on the subject that is being discussed. Often this type of essay is used as a way to detail a subject which is usually more difficult for people to understand, clearly and concisely.

Argumentative Essay

When writing an argumentative essay, you will be attempting to convince your reader about an opinion or point of view. The idea is to show the reader whether the topic is true or false along with giving your own opinion. You must use facts and data to back up any claims made within the essay.

Format of Essay Writing

Now there is no rigid format of an essay. It is a creative process so it should not be confined within boundaries. However, there is a basic structure that is generally followed while writing essays.

This is the first paragraph of your essay. This is where the writer introduces his topic for the very first time. You can give a very brief synopsis of your essay in the introductory paragraph. Generally, it is not very long, about 4-6 lines.

This is the main crux of your essays. The body is the meat of your essay sandwiched between the introduction and the conclusion. So the most vital content of the essay will be here. This need not be confined to one paragraph. It can extend to two or more paragraphs according to the content.

This is the last paragraph of the essay. Sometimes a conclusion will just mirror the introductory paragraph but make sure the words and syntax are different. A conclusion is also a great place, to sum up, a story or an argument. You can round up your essay by providing some morals or wrapping up a story. Make sure you complete your essays with the conclusion, leave no hanging threads.

Writing Tips

Give your essays an interesting and appropriate title. It will help draw the attention of the reader and pique their curiosity

Keep it between 300-500 words. This is the ideal length, you can take creative license to increase or decrease it

Keep your language simple and crisp. Unnecessary complicated and difficult words break the flow of the sentence.

Do not make grammar mistakes, use correct punctuation and spelling five-paragraph. If this is not done it will distract the reader from the content

Before beginning the essay, organize your thoughts and plot a rough draft. This way you can ensure the story will flow and not be an unorganized mess.

Understand the Topic Thoroughly-Sometimes we jump to a conclusion just by reading the topic once and later we realize that the topic was different than what we wrote about.  Read the topic as many times as it takes for you to align your opinion and understanding about the topic.

Make Pointers-It is a daunting task to write an essay inflow as sometimes we tend to lose our way of explaining and get off-topic, missing important details. Thinking about all points you want to discuss and then writing them down somewhere helps in covering everything you hoped to convey in your essay.

Develop a Plan and Do The Math-Essays have word limits and you have to plan your content in such a way that it is accurate, well-described, and meets the word limit given. Keep a track of your words while writing so that you always have an idea of how much to write more or less.

Essays are the most important means of learning the structure of writing and presenting them to the reader.

FAQs on Essay Writing

1. Writing an Essay in a format is important?

Yes, it is important because it makes your content more streamlined and understandable by the reader. A set format gives a reader a clear picture of what you are trying to explain. It also organises your own thoughts while composing an essay as we tend to think and write in a haphazard manner. The format gives a structure to the writeup.

2. How does Essay writing improve our English?

Essay writing is a very important part of your English earning curriculum, as you understand how to describe anything in your words or how to put your point of view without losing its meaning

3.  How do you write a good essay?

Start by writing a thorough plan. Ensure your essay has a clear structure and overall argument. Try to back up each point you make with a quotation. Answer the question in your introduction and conclusion but remember to be creative too.

4.  What is the format of writing an essay?

A basic essay consists of three main parts: introduction, body, and conclusion. This basic essay format will help you to write and organize an essay. However, flexibility is important. While keeping this basic essay format in mind, let the topic and specific assignment guide the writing and organization.

5.  How many paragraphs does an essay have?

The basic format for an essay is known as the five paragraph essay – but an essay may have as many paragraphs as needed. A five-paragraph essay contains five paragraphs. However, the essay itself consists of three sections: an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. Below we'll explore the basics of writing an essay.

6.  Can you use the word you in an essay?

In academic or college writing, most formal essays and research reports use third-person pronouns and do not use “I” or “you.” An essay is the writer's analysis of a topic.  “You” has no place in an essay since the essay is the writer's thoughts and not the reader's thoughts.

7.  What does bridge mean in an essay?

A bridge sentence is a special kind of topic sentence. In addition to signaling what the new paragraph is about, it shows how that follows from what the old paragraph said. The key to constructing good bridges is briefly pointing back to what you just finished saying.

How to Structure an Essay | Tips & Templates

The basic structure of an essay always consists of an introduction , a body , and a conclusion . But for many students, the most difficult part of structuring an essay is deciding how to organize information within the body.

The basics of essay structure, chronological structure, compare-and-contrast structure, problems-methods-solutions structure, signposting to clarify your structure, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about essay structure.

There are two main things to keep in mind when working on your essay structure: making sure to include the right information in each part, and deciding how you’ll organize the information within the body.

Parts of an essay

The three parts that make up all essays are described in the table below.

Part Content

Order of information

You’ll also have to consider how to present information within the body. There are a few general principles that can guide you here.

The first is that your argument should move from the simplest claim to the most complex . The body of a good argumentative essay often begins with simple and widely accepted claims, and then moves towards more complex and contentious ones.

For example, you might begin by describing a generally accepted philosophical concept, and then apply it to a new topic. The grounding in the general concept will allow the reader to understand your unique application of it.

The second principle is that background information should appear towards the beginning of your essay . General background is presented in the introduction. If you have additional background to present, this information will usually come at the start of the body.

The third principle is that everything in your essay should be relevant to the thesis . Ask yourself whether each piece of information advances your argument or provides necessary background. And make sure that the text clearly expresses each piece of information’s relevance.

The sections below present several organizational templates for essays: the chronological approach, the compare-and-contrast approach, and the problems-methods-solutions approach.

Here's why students love Scribbr's proofreading services

Discover proofreading & editing

The chronological approach (sometimes called the cause-and-effect approach) is probably the simplest way to structure an essay. It just means discussing events in the order in which they occurred, discussing how they are related (i.e. the cause and effect involved) as you go.

A chronological approach can be useful when your essay is about a series of events. Don’t rule out other approaches, though—even when the chronological approach is the obvious one, you might be able to bring out more with a different structure.

Explore the tabs below to see a general template and a specific example outline from an essay on the invention of the printing press.

  • Thesis statement
  • Discussion of event/period
  • Consequences
  • Importance of topic
  • Strong closing statement
  • Claim that the printing press marks the end of the Middle Ages
  • Background on the low levels of literacy before the printing press
  • Thesis statement: The invention of the printing press increased circulation of information in Europe, paving the way for the Reformation
  • High levels of illiteracy in medieval Europe
  • Literacy and thus knowledge and education were mainly the domain of religious and political elites
  • Consequence: this discouraged political and religious change
  • Invention of the printing press in 1440 by Johannes Gutenberg
  • Implications of the new technology for book production
  • Consequence: Rapid spread of the technology and the printing of the Gutenberg Bible
  • Trend for translating the Bible into vernacular languages during the years following the printing press’s invention
  • Luther’s own translation of the Bible during the Reformation
  • Consequence: The large-scale effects the Reformation would have on religion and politics
  • Summarize the history described
  • Stress the significance of the printing press to the events of this period

Essays with two or more main subjects are often structured around comparing and contrasting . For example, a literary analysis essay might compare two different texts, and an argumentative essay might compare the strengths of different arguments.

There are two main ways of structuring a compare-and-contrast essay: the alternating method, and the block method.

Alternating

In the alternating method, each paragraph compares your subjects in terms of a specific point of comparison. These points of comparison are therefore what defines each paragraph.

The tabs below show a general template for this structure, and a specific example for an essay comparing and contrasting distance learning with traditional classroom learning.

  • Synthesis of arguments
  • Topical relevance of distance learning in lockdown
  • Increasing prevalence of distance learning over the last decade
  • Thesis statement: While distance learning has certain advantages, it introduces multiple new accessibility issues that must be addressed for it to be as effective as classroom learning
  • Classroom learning: Ease of identifying difficulties and privately discussing them
  • Distance learning: Difficulty of noticing and unobtrusively helping
  • Classroom learning: Difficulties accessing the classroom (disability, distance travelled from home)
  • Distance learning: Difficulties with online work (lack of tech literacy, unreliable connection, distractions)
  • Classroom learning: Tends to encourage personal engagement among students and with teacher, more relaxed social environment
  • Distance learning: Greater ability to reach out to teacher privately
  • Sum up, emphasize that distance learning introduces more difficulties than it solves
  • Stress the importance of addressing issues with distance learning as it becomes increasingly common
  • Distance learning may prove to be the future, but it still has a long way to go

In the block method, each subject is covered all in one go, potentially across multiple paragraphs. For example, you might write two paragraphs about your first subject and then two about your second subject, making comparisons back to the first.

The tabs again show a general template, followed by another essay on distance learning, this time with the body structured in blocks.

  • Point 1 (compare)
  • Point 2 (compare)
  • Point 3 (compare)
  • Point 4 (compare)
  • Advantages: Flexibility, accessibility
  • Disadvantages: Discomfort, challenges for those with poor internet or tech literacy
  • Advantages: Potential for teacher to discuss issues with a student in a separate private call
  • Disadvantages: Difficulty of identifying struggling students and aiding them unobtrusively, lack of personal interaction among students
  • Advantages: More accessible to those with low tech literacy, equality of all sharing one learning environment
  • Disadvantages: Students must live close enough to attend, commutes may vary, classrooms not always accessible for disabled students
  • Advantages: Ease of picking up on signs a student is struggling, more personal interaction among students
  • Disadvantages: May be harder for students to approach teacher privately in person to raise issues

An essay that concerns a specific problem (practical or theoretical) may be structured according to the problems-methods-solutions approach.

This is just what it sounds like: You define the problem, characterize a method or theory that may solve it, and finally analyze the problem, using this method or theory to arrive at a solution. If the problem is theoretical, the solution might be the analysis you present in the essay itself; otherwise, you might just present a proposed solution.

The tabs below show a template for this structure and an example outline for an essay about the problem of fake news.

  • Introduce the problem
  • Provide background
  • Describe your approach to solving it
  • Define the problem precisely
  • Describe why it’s important
  • Indicate previous approaches to the problem
  • Present your new approach, and why it’s better
  • Apply the new method or theory to the problem
  • Indicate the solution you arrive at by doing so
  • Assess (potential or actual) effectiveness of solution
  • Describe the implications
  • Problem: The growth of “fake news” online
  • Prevalence of polarized/conspiracy-focused news sources online
  • Thesis statement: Rather than attempting to stamp out online fake news through social media moderation, an effective approach to combating it must work with educational institutions to improve media literacy
  • Definition: Deliberate disinformation designed to spread virally online
  • Popularization of the term, growth of the phenomenon
  • Previous approaches: Labeling and moderation on social media platforms
  • Critique: This approach feeds conspiracies; the real solution is to improve media literacy so users can better identify fake news
  • Greater emphasis should be placed on media literacy education in schools
  • This allows people to assess news sources independently, rather than just being told which ones to trust
  • This is a long-term solution but could be highly effective
  • It would require significant organization and investment, but would equip people to judge news sources more effectively
  • Rather than trying to contain the spread of fake news, we must teach the next generation not to fall for it

essay ka meaning

Signposting means guiding the reader through your essay with language that describes or hints at the structure of what follows.  It can help you clarify your structure for yourself as well as helping your reader follow your ideas.

The essay overview

In longer essays whose body is split into multiple named sections, the introduction often ends with an overview of the rest of the essay. This gives a brief description of the main idea or argument of each section.

The overview allows the reader to immediately understand what will be covered in the essay and in what order. Though it describes what  comes later in the text, it is generally written in the present tense . The following example is from a literary analysis essay on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein .

Transitions

Transition words and phrases are used throughout all good essays to link together different ideas. They help guide the reader through your text, and an essay that uses them effectively will be much easier to follow.

Various different relationships can be expressed by transition words, as shown in this example.

Because Hitler failed to respond to the British ultimatum, France and the UK declared war on Germany. Although it was an outcome the Allies had hoped to avoid, they were prepared to back up their ultimatum in order to combat the existential threat posed by the Third Reich.

Transition sentences may be included to transition between different paragraphs or sections of an essay. A good transition sentence moves the reader on to the next topic while indicating how it relates to the previous one.

… Distance learning, then, seems to improve accessibility in some ways while representing a step backwards in others.

However , considering the issue of personal interaction among students presents a different picture.

The structure of an essay is divided into an introduction that presents your topic and thesis statement , a body containing your in-depth analysis and arguments, and a conclusion wrapping up your ideas.

The structure of the body is flexible, but you should always spend some time thinking about how you can organize your essay to best serve your ideas.

An essay isn’t just a loose collection of facts and ideas. Instead, it should be centered on an overarching argument (summarized in your thesis statement ) that every part of the essay relates to.

The way you structure your essay is crucial to presenting your argument coherently. A well-structured essay helps your reader follow the logic of your ideas and understand your overall point.

Comparisons in essays are generally structured in one of two ways:

  • The alternating method, where you compare your subjects side by side according to one specific aspect at a time.
  • The block method, where you cover each subject separately in its entirety.

It’s also possible to combine both methods, for example by writing a full paragraph on each of your topics and then a final paragraph contrasting the two according to a specific metric.

You should try to follow your outline as you write your essay . However, if your ideas change or it becomes clear that your structure could be better, it’s okay to depart from your essay outline . Just make sure you know why you’re doing so.

Just like a regular essay , a critical thinking essay can be divided into three general parts — an introduction, the main body, and a conclusion. While a regular essay may require simply presenting an idea by analyzing relevant sources, a critical thinking essay requires reviewing the idea in more detail. Extracting evidence for or against a specific position, recognizing weaknesses and strengths of the argumentation and providing a well-sourced, preferably objective opinion is all part and parcel of a good critical thinking essay. Being able to reflect on the idea in a more profound way than usual is also a plus.

Writing Explained

Aka or A.k.a. – What is Correct?

Home » Aka or A.k.a. – What is Correct?

Should you use aka or a.k.a. ? If you have ever stressed over those three little periods, you aren’t alone.

Both aka and a.k.a. see frequent use in print, but the rules of style guides and formatting standards are often strict and unforgiving. Many college students see MLA formatting as rigid and inflexible, until they are required to adhere to APA formatting or Chicago style and learn to see MLA as relatively indifferent to most formatting minutiae.

In this case, though, most sources are in agreement. Continue reading to learn whether you should use a.k.a. or aka .

What is the Difference Between A.k.a and Aka?

In this post, I will compare a.k.a. vs. aka . I will use each version in an example sentence or two, to give you an idea of how they should appear in context.

Plus, I will show you a memory tool that makes it easier to choose the preferred spelling of this abbreviation.

When to Use A.k.a.

define aka

For example,

  • The Milwaukee Brewers (a.k.a., the second-to-last place NL Central team in 2016) are challenging the Chicago Cubs (a.k.a., the world champions in 2016) for the division lead.
  • Martin, a.k.a. Mart or Marty, is a pleasant young man who seldom disturbs those around him.

A.k.a. should be pronounced “ ay-kay-ay,” never “ah-kah .” In other words, you should spell out the individual letters when speaking them aloud.

When to Use Aka

What does aka mean? Aka is another spelling of the same abbreviation. The only difference is that it leaves out the periods. Aka is still pronounced “ay-kay-ay,” and it means exactly the same thing and fits into all the same contexts as a.k.a.

In fact, most sources prefer aka to a.k.a. , including AP style, Merriam-Webster, and the Oxford English Dictionary. Too many periods can be clunky or confusing, especially in scientific contexts, which are often already clogged with decimal points as part of statistical notation. Aka is simpler and cleaner, and since it doesn’t resemble the spelling of any other common English word, there is little reason to keep the periods in this abbreviation.

As you can see, though, both forms do appear in print sources:

definition of aka definition

This chart graphs aka vs. a.k.a. in English books since 1800. Since it only looks at books, it isn’t exhaustive in its scope. It does, however, clearly illustrates a long-term usage trend.

Trick to Remember the Difference?

aka versus a.k.a

Since the Associated Press doesn’t include periods in the abbreviation of its own name (AP), it ought to be simple to remember that AP doesn’t recommend using them in the abbreviation aka , either.

Is it a.k.a. or aka? Aka and a.k.a. are abbreviations of the phrase also known as , which introduces pseudonyms and other ways to refer to something.

Both forms are popular, but most dictionaries and style guides prefer aka , so you should, too.

  • Don’t use a.k.a.

A Person is a Person Because of Other People

By Jeremy Cronin

‘A Person is a Person Because of Other People’ by Jeremy Cronin is a poem which examines the idea of communication, in its various forms.

Jeremy Cronin

Nationality: African

He was the Deputy Minister of Public Works.

Motho Ke Motho Ka Batho Babang (A Person is a Person Because of Other People)  is a poem which examines the idea of communication, in its various forms. It details one wordless interaction between two men in prison; two individuals who find solidarity in a brief exchange.

Jeremy Cronin was involved with the South African Communist Party (SACP) during Apartheid. The title of this poem is in Sesotho – one of the indigenous Africa languages spoken in South Africa. and draws attention to the importance of human contact, suggesting that the individual is stronger when part of a collective.  Due to his political opinions, Cronin was arrested and served seven years in prison from 1976-83, therefore we may infer that this poem is autobiographical, and that the speaking voice is that of the poet himself.

A Person is a Person Because of Other People by Jeremy Cronin

A Person is a Person Because of Other People Analysis

The poem is structurally interesting by way of its visual layout. There are no traditional stanza breaks and the narrative is laid out on the left while on the right, small asides provide translations of the wordless interaction. The form thus follows no regular pattern however the insertions add depth and detail to the brief exchange, highlighting the multi-layered and nuanced nature of human communication. The poem is composed of 28 lines which follow no rhyming scheme , perhaps reflecting human speech , which is also irregular and follows no form or rules.

The first line of the poem describes the way in which the narrator is attempting to communicate with another man: with the use of a mirror. We may assume that the owner of the speaking voice has been placed in solitary confinement and, given the poem’s political themes, that the prison guards wanted to prevent all contact between prisoners. Bearing in mind the highly forbidden nature of interaction between inmates, Cronin thus manages to underline the necessity of communication between humans, since these men are thus risking horrible punishment in order to have a simple, brief interaction with each other. From the first line, we see that not only can the men not use verbal communication, they do not even have a direct view of each other. From the poem’s beginning, it is imbued with tension and the brief exchange is made all the more intense by the poet’s use of the present tense, which gives a sense of immediacy to his words.

In the third line we are introduced to the man who will take part in the exchange with our narrator. It is important to note that he is initially referred to as a “person” and then as a “prisoner”. Keeping in line with the title, Cronin is again emphasising that these two men, regardless of their circumstances and situation, are first and foremost human beings, who thrive on communication.

In the mirror I see him see My face in the mirror, I see the fingertips of his free hand

In these lines, the poet plays with the idea of conversation by repeating the word “see”. Not only does this emphasise the numerous obstacles and barriers impeding the communication between the two men, it also introduces a central theme of the poem: wordless conversation. In A Person is a Person Because of Other People , the poet draws our attention to the importance of verbal communication through it’s absence. Vision, therefore, has a large significance in the poem, reflected even in the way it is laid out on the paper.

The poet goes on to describe the first sign the other inmate makes with his hand: “an object the size of a badge”. On the right hand side of the text, we are given our first translation, in brackets: “This means: A warder .” Next, the other man moves his fingers “like two antennae”, meaning “(He’s being watched)”. With these, the poet introduces yet more barriers to communication existing within the prison walls: not only can they not directly see each other, they are also under constant vigilance. The use of these asides, to translate the man’s wordless messages link back to the title: the other inmate is not using easily recognisable symbols and their meanings are in no way as obvious to the reader as they seem to be to the poet. Therefore, the poet’s inclusions of the translations allow the reader to understand and thus involve us in the exchange, not only adding more intensity but also extending this communication beyond the two men and beyond even the poem. This emphasises the essential meaning of the title; that the strength of the individual is made greater by their participation in the collective.

A finger of his free hand makes a watch-hand’s arc On the wrist of his polishing arm without Disrupting the slow-slow of his work

The third symbol that the man makes is even more ambiguous than the first two. However, Cronin not only to extracts a meaning from it but also replaces the sign with what he imagines the man would have said, if he had used words: “ Later . Maybe, later we can speak.” Here, the symbols have taken on even greater significance. Cronin is emphasising that even by taking away the access to words, humans can still express themselves and their personalities, and in this way interact with each other.

Hey! Wat maak jy daar?

Immediately after, comes the sharp demand from the warden. These words, the first spoken of the poem, are in italics and contained on the left hand side of the poem’s layout. Despite this question being in Afrikaans, Cronin does not provide a translation, only labelling it “a voice from around the corner.” Throughout the poem, Cronin has been subtly minimising the importance of words themselves and we therefore find that a translation of this question is barely necessary, since both it’s presentation in italics and its source from, presumably, the warden allow us to infer its meaning. The other inmate’s response also requires no translation, and enlightens us a little more as to the meaning of the warden’s question.

The final lines of the poem describe the last and most important symbol the man makes with his hand. Cronin invites the reader in, again involving us.

now watch (…) A black fist.

We may notice that the hand the man uses to make the symbols is always referred to as his “free hand”. This creates an interesting split within the inmate represented by his two hands: the working one, which carries out his assigned task almost mechanically with a “slow-slow rhythm ” and then the “free hand” which represents his freedom and humanity. Cronin again plays with the idea of communication here by referring to the free hand as “the talkative one”, personifying it and emphasising again the importance of human contact.

Cronin reverses the order when describing the final symbol that the man makes: giving its meaning before actually telling us what it is. This inversion places special emphasis on this final image and the easily recognisable sign of “a black fist” draws our attention once more to the power of non-verbal communication.

In  A Person is a Person Because of Other People , the poet describes a brief, intense interaction between two men. Its informal register, use of the present tense and unusal typography give it an intensity and immediacy that draw the reader in. In this way, we can easily understand the poem’s message: a person is a person because of other people. Although stripped of his physical freedom and access to other people, the narrator and the second man find support and strength through the exchanging of hand symbols. This form of communication is made all the more poignant by way of its complete absence of words and thus the poet draws our attention in a subtle and beautiful way to the ultimate triumphing of human solidarity faced with adversity.

What Does the Abbreviation A.K.A. or AKA Mean?

Danielle McLeod is a highly qualified secondary English Language Arts Instructor who brings a diverse educational background to her classroom. With degrees in science, English, and literacy, she has worked to create cross-curricular materials to bridge learning gaps and help students focus on effective writing and speech techniques. Currently working as a dual credit technical writing instructor at a Career and Technical Education Center, her curriculum development surrounds student focus on effective communication for future career choices.

Aka or a.k.a means “also known as.” This acronym is commonly used to reference a person’s alias, pseudonym, or nickname. You can write it in all lowercase (aka), all uppercase (AKA), or with periods (a.k.a.). Whichever style you pick, remember to stay consistent in your writing.

An acronym is an abbreviation formed from the initial letters of other words. While some acronyms morph into standalone words themselves (e.g., NASA or laser), others, like aka , are pronounced by enunciating each letter.

An abbreviation is a shortened version of a word or phrase that has been generally accepted as a replacement for the full form. In fact, many people are unaware of what familiar acronyms may even stand for.

Continue reading to learn the origins of “aka,” its appropriate usage, and to view it in action across various examples.

What Does AKA Mean?

The terms a.k.a. and aka are abbreviations for the phrase also known as . Most often used to describe a person’s aliases, pseudonyms or nicknames, a.k.a. and aka may also be used when describing another name for a place or object.

The Evolution of AKA

What Does the Abbreviation A.K.A. or AKA Mean

When the phrase also known as was first abbreviated, the letters were separated by periods, signaling that this was indeed an abbreviation and not a word in its own right. As a.k.a. became more commonly used, the periods within the abbreviation were dropped. In fact, aka is widely preferred over a.k.a and even the Merriam-Webster and Oxford English dictionaries list it as aka within their example sources. It also doesn’t resemble any other common English word so it works well as a standalone when used as aka.

You may find some professors or writing instructors prefer one way over another, and in that situation, always do what your instruction dictates for assignments or work. Even MLA and APA formatting doesn’t specifically specify one over the other and accepts either use – allowing writing instructors to dictate what they prefer. But for personal use, you can use whichever you are most comfortable with.

You can see its usage over time in this Ngram:

aka vs a.k.a english

How to Pronounce AKA

Whether you are reading a.k.a or aka, it is pronounced the same way. The pronunciation is ay-kay-ay and enunciates the three letters separately and not as one word, which means it is not an acronym but just an abbreviation.

How to Use AKA

We’ve established that you can use both abbreviations either with or without periods and there is no one correct answer. But, did you know you can use either capital or lowercase letters? As stated previously, either is considered correct, but stay consistent with its use.

AKA Sentence Examples

As mentioned, you have quite a few options to choose from when determining which is your go-to preference. Whether you use A.K.A, AKA, a.k.a, or aka you can’t go wrong unless you decide to intermix them. Take a look at these examples to see AKA in use:

In these days of every-man-for-himself-ism, the guy who takes over is the one who isn’t afraid to break the rules and stand out—like Steven Yeun (a.k.a. Glenn on The Walking Dead), dressed here in the season’s most sophisticated, crisply tailored, workplace-ready tweed suits. ( GQ Magazine ) The geniuses behind Saturday’s SNL episode invited “America’s Dad”—A.K.A. Tom Hanks—into our homes to help calm us down by adding some humor to it all.  ( Glamour Magazine ) Kimberly J. Brown, AKA Marnie Cromwell, did you a major solid and is letting you in on what one of the series’ most iconic villains, Kal, is up to 15 years later. ( Seventeen Magazine )

When Not to Use AKA

Although it may be fairly obvious when you can use the abbreviation, there are some hard and fast rules of when NOT to use it in academic writing. For informal writing, it is acceptable for use in a variety of situations, as explained above, but you need to take care when sticking to more technical publications.  What’s not okay in academic contexts is the informal use of aka to introduce an ad-hoc alternative term purely to describe/characterize something – such as, for example:

Houston’s new Astrodome, aka. the Eighth Wonder of the World. ( This Day in Sports )

In Conclusion

If you have ever been a bit stressed about the use of aka and its proper form, you don’t have anything to worry about as all forms are generally accepted. However, since even well-published dictionary sources use the aka style, you might want to follow suit. Be sure to share to help anyone else who might be stressing!

essay ka meaning

Between the lines

As a requirement for english 10 studies in up-diliman, “para kanino ka bumabangon” analysis.

When people are asked a question, the mind unconsciously and immediately tries to find an answer for that. By opening the commercial with one, the commercial got the attention of the viewers, which is one of the most important characteristics of an effective advertisement. Perhaps, that single sentence made the whole advertisement worth the praise. It imposed a daily reality for everyone. Why do you wake up every morning knowing that you’ll just be rough up by tiresome jobs and problems? It questions life itself, prompting the people to find their purpose in life. In addition, most people tend to view themselves as the underdogs with a goal to achieve. Therefore, consumers are struck by the reason the ad draws out when they ask the existentialist question, thus making the ad have quite an impact.

The question prompted everyone to consider people who are special to them. Then, it gave out the reasons for living a new day by starting to the most obvious, for the children and friends. The ad simply showed a picture reminding that we should not just work for ourselves, but for others. In other words, we should work to serve, not just to survive alone. These reasons might have been the answer everyone has, but the commercial didn’t stop there. It had gone on and included people who are not really related to us, for the strangers and for the many. It sparks the spirit of nationalism that have been stagnant in our hearts. The fading value of helping each other was revived once again because of the ad. We can see different people smiling ear to ear with each other, while doing a collaborative work.  They are united under the same outlook in life.

From the ethnic clothes to the spirit of bayanihan in the end, the whole thing speaks of Filipino culture and tradition. It ask people to love and serve their own nation and its people. It made the people want to help others and to make the country a better place.

The last reason given was for yourself. At first glance, this seems to contradict the message, but it actually signifies satisfaction. Waking up for self is not waking up for sole survival, but to feel the gift of the day. It meant that waking up is having a new beginning to make things better. And, it also drives the message that when people serve others, they will find joy in life. So, by waking up for others, you indirectly bring happiness to your life. “I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy.”- Rabindranath Tagore.

The commercial, in general, denotes a fresh start with new hope. It projects an image of a united society, living in peace and harmony. It portrays a message for everyone that we should not just live on our own, but to live together as one. Life is not just survival of the fittest, but it is coping up with others.

We can see that the question did not just inspire, but it also struck the roots of unity. The ad is an inspiration for every Filipino out there. No matter how many floods, quakes, debts we are in, we will always have something to look forward to. Nescafé also made the message of unity in diversity to stand out. No matter if you’re an adult, child, or even childish, we can work together and unite under the same horizon. We may all have different goals, but we should not forget that we are all the same inside, and should help each other. Despite the external differences, our carnal manifestation is like a mere illusion of what we really are. Nescafé really did a good job of representing these ideas. Similar to the commercial’s last line, a tiny spark can start a fire. Starting from you, a spark of unity can start the flame of harmony.

Unlike most advertisements, normal Filipinos are the stars here, and not some pretty face actor or model. This way, the masses could easily relate to the people on the screen and be touched by their message. The teachers, indigenous people, students, policemen, construction workers, they are the real faces of the Filipino. It’s commendable that they did not hide the faces of the country behind some rich actors adorned with thick make-up and perfect clothes.

The commercial shows how Filipinos view the Filipino people. In our mentality, we see the Filipino as a person with a drive to work. We see ourselves, not as a noble race, but as a hardworking community. As shown by the suggested reasons to get up, we tend to be tied deeply within our family or community that we seem to value our loved ones or the bayanihan spirit above ourselves and individuality. We see ourselves as happy people, despite not having much riches and having to work quite hard to earn a living.

However, the ad didn’t show the higher class of our society or the bad side of the Filipinos. The fact that there are rich and greedy people in the country that hoard money and pork was not shown. It might lead many people into thinking that Filipinos are all good and happy, that there are no problems in our society in terms of attitude and agenda. Sad as it is, not everyone is a goody two-shoes.

Compared to other commercials of Nescafé, the ad shows “normal” people waking up and working for different reasons. They are waking up literally if viewed at that perspective, but it may symbolically signifies a fresh start, or somehow, an enlightenment. Enlightened to initiate something for a change. A fresh start with a confidence to rebel against the flaws. The beautiful sunrise in the beginning is a commonly used symbolism for a new day, and a hope per se. You can also see the nipa hut silhouette. Again, the scene makes us think of home and of our simple lives.

The setting also showed the regular environment that Filipinos live in. Simple living room at the start gave a welcoming feel to the viewers, suggesting that the coffee will also give you the same feeling. After all, Filipinos love drinking hot coffee during the morning, for them, breakfast is not complete without the drink. By using the common class as actors, they indirectly planted the idea that the coffee is not expensive and can be afforded by everyone. In other words, it is for the masses. The glimpses of a common Filipino life added to it had a touch of nostalgic. One might see himself/herself in the same situation as shown. Just like why Telenovelas are such a hit, the ad successfully hooked and touched the people’s lives. Despite showing a clear target demographic, the advertisement likely appeals to all people, dispersed among all social classes.

We think the producers also made use of the Filipino setting to compete against the international brands like Starbucks. We all know that Starbucks coffee is a big hit in the country and perhaps the most popular coffee shop around. But, we also know that their coffee is not really for the low on cash people. Nescafe made a good move by changing people’s mind that great coffee is expensive and a luxury, that there are other alternatives to branded coffee, that coffee is not a luxury.

But, the scenes in the classroom and children might not have been sending the right message if this is a coffee commercial. Caffeine are not good for children, it can cause complications on their health and habits. Sleeping is an important part of growing up so coffee should not be taken by kids. The kids being there might encourage children to drink coffee seeing as they are all smiles in the commercial. This led us to believe that the commercial might be more focused on giving a message than on promoting coffee itself, since the children in the scenes are instrumental in getting the message across. Also, it had been implied a little that coffee is a relaxing drink and the drink of the Filipinos. It neglected to inform the public that too much coffee everyday can cause health problems.

Moreover, there was an instance of stereotyping the indigenous people (IP). In reality, not all IP wear those kinds of clothing.

The smooth voice of an adult man makes the atmosphere have a “homey” touch to it, coupled with the relaxing pull of the strings in the background. The use of the Filipino language shows that they are really targeting the common people as not everyone can speak or understand eloquent English. By using the native tongue, more people were able to understand and relate.

Let’s not forget the background music, the soothing sound of the guitar’s strings just makes one relax and calm. And since guitars plays an important part of Filipino music, coupled with the fact that guitar players are not concentrated in a single class of people, the masses are easily attracted.

You might notice that the video was captured in such a way that it can easily be mistaken for being took from a handheld video recorder/ digital camera. The way the scenes are introduced and how there are blurred effects on it adds weight on this argument. It is almost like an amateur videographer trying to preserve the memories of his/her life. This creative way of presenting the commercial strengthened the message it want to give out and add another touch of home to it.

The advertisement indeed takes an unusual route by, instead of giving a blatant buy-our-product approach, slowly drawing out a spark of reason for people to get up with inspiration and determination to complete the day’s challenges. And while the people are at it, why don’t they take a warm invigorating cup of Nescafé coffee? They did not immediately gave reason as to why the viewers should buy their product and how good their products are. The single concept that was being passed around throughout the commercial was that Nescafe coffee is for the common people.

Trump and Allies Forge Plans to Increase Presidential Power in 2025

Donald J. Trump and his allies are planning a sweeping expansion of presidential power over the machinery of government if voters return him to the White House in 2025, reshaping the structure of the executive branch to concentrate far greater authority directly in his hands.

Their plans to centralize more power in the Oval Office stretch far beyond the former president’s recent remarks that he would order a criminal investigation into his political rival, President Biden, signaling his intent to end the post-Watergate norm of Justice Department independence from White House political control.

Mr. Trump and his associates have a broader goal: to alter the balance of power by increasing the president’s authority over every part of the federal government that now operates, by either law or tradition, with any measure of independence from political interference by the White House, according to a review of his campaign policy proposals and interviews with people close to him.

Mr. Trump intends to bring independent agencies — like the Federal Communications Commission, which makes and enforces rules for television and internet companies, and the Federal Trade Commission, which enforces various antitrust and other consumer protection rules against businesses — under direct presidential control.

He wants to revive the practice of “impounding” funds, refusing to spend money Congress has appropriated for programs a president doesn’t like — a tactic that lawmakers banned under President Richard Nixon.

He intends to strip employment protections from tens of thousands of career civil servants, making it easier to replace them if they are deemed obstacles to his agenda. And he plans to scour the intelligence agencies, the State Department and the defense bureaucracies to remove officials he has vilified as “the sick political class that hates our country.”
