Raayan movie review: Dhanush’s 50th film is a must-watch for its performances and unexpected twists

Raayan movie review: dhanush’s directorial totally packs a punch. ar rahman delivers a brilliant background score that elevates the film..

He is a National Award-winning actor, who has always won praise for his performances. Thus, it wasn’t a surprise when Tamil star Dhanush chose to direct his first film, Pa Paandi, in 2017. And he has now chosen to write and direct his second film, Raayan , a gangster drama, which also marks the 50th film in his career. Kathavaraayan or Raayan (Dhanush) is the eldest in a family consisting of two brothers – Manickam (Kalidas Jayaram), Muthu (Sundeep Kishan) – and a sister Durga (Dushara Vijayan) – and it falls on Raayan to look after them when their parents leave home one day to never return. They live in a small town in Tamil Nadu, which is ruled by two gangsters, Sekar (SJ Suryah) and Saravanan, and there seems to be peace prevailing on the surface. 

But the new police commissioner ( Prakash Raj) , who comes to town, decides to stir things up a little to uncover the murky goings-on between the gangs. And it is here that the first half really kicks off. College-going Manickam, loafer Muthu and Raayan, who runs a small fast food stall, and Durga lead a pretty happy life till an incident causes upheaval. How and why does Raayan get dragged into this gang war? What happens next forms the rest of the story.

What works, what doesn’t

Dhanush has always been a writer, having written other scripts and plenty of lyrics for songs. He has penned the story of Raayan, a gangster revenge drama, and one must say that the second half was much better scripted than the first. The theme of the film is not new, but how Dhanush has treated it as a writer is different and highly engaging, particularly in the second half, which has plenty of plot twists.

What he has also done as a writer is ensured he has given meaty roles to the other actors, especially Kalidas, Sundeep and Dushara. The three characters are integral to the plot and the character arcs he has etched also allows them to show different facets of their acting skills.; and one must compliment Dhanush for this.

The only aspect that could been a minor flaw is the routine writing in the first half which is a sort of deja vu. He has thrown in some humour intermittently by way of dialogues and this works in the film’s favour without hampering its flow. The ending though wasn’t as sharp as expected but what Dhanush has cleverly done is set up the platform for a sequel to Raayan.

The performances and music

All the main actors in the film, including SJ Suryah, who plays protagonist, have performed well lending more gravitas to this film. Dhanush has, of course, excelled not just as an actor but director too. As an actor, the look given to him (short hair, rough beard) and the way he channels his anger with his eyes is quite captivating particularly in the climax fight.

With the movie being certified A and the theme being gang wars, there is obviously plenty of violence (especially in the second half). There are some superb action/fight blocks in the film that have been well-choreographed and shot, particularly the use of the handheld camera that movies with the actors. The interval action sequence, as well as the hospital scene and climax are some really notable scenes that are superb in the film.

AR Rahman has scored the music and BGM for Raayan and he has delivered a brilliant background score that really elevates the film, especially the action sequences. One must mention the work of DOP Om Prakash and editor Prasanna GK here. The striking visuals and sharp cuts and close ups in the film enhance the blow (literally and figuratively) it seeks to deliver.

Dhanush’s Raayan totally packs a punch and is a must-watch for its captivating performances and unexpected story twists. It’s a stellar 50th career film for Dhanush.

'Raayan' Movie Review: What's Good, What's Bad; Find Out From Viewers' Words

Dhanush's landmark 50th movie 'Raayan' is all set to appear before the audience on Friday, July 26. This is his second directorial movie and funded by Kalanithi Maran on the banner of Sun Pictures.

SJ Suryah, Prakash Raj, Selvaraghavan, Sundeep Kishan, Kalidas Jayaram, Dushara Vijayan, Aparna Balamurali, Saravanan and others are in the cast. The movie has the music of two-time Oscar Award-winning musician AR Rahman. Om Prakash is the cinematographer and Prasanna GK is the editor.

The story of the movie revolves around Raayan, a humble young man, who embarks on a quest to avenge his family's death, leading him deep into the world of organized crime as he searches for their killers.

The movie has managed to generate decent buzz. Thanks to the power-packed trailer, the promotional clip has garnered a lot of eyeballs. With the movie being a milestone movie of the 'Kolaveri Di' hitmaker, there is a huge expectations around the movie.

s shiva kumar: #Raayan Senseless, mindless mayhem. Cloaked in sibling sentiments but bathed in blood. The reason for the brothers backstabbing the hero is utterly unconvincing. The protagonist massacres at least 50 and a cop allows him to go scotfree! The censors must be censured! Pathetic!

VK: After steadily establishing every character in 1st half, expected more in 2nd half but it manages to cross the line somehow. Predictable flow but neatly executed though. Dir Dhanush impressive in many shots, lightings, art work & the way he extracted work out of others.

The Aakashavaani: #Raayan - Routine But Entertaining!! Raayan has nothing new we haven't seen before but the film has 4 to 5 very well-written & directed sequences. Especially two fight sequences & one confrontation sequence during the second half are very entertaining.

Dhanush as an actor & director did well but as a writer, his work should've been better, especially during the first half.

Dushara Vijayan Dhanush's sister did a splendid job. Her performance during the hospital fight sequence is whistle-worthy. Sundeep Kishan got a good role & he is good at delivering both one-liners & emotional sequences. All the other actors did their roles well too.

Technically, the film is top-notch. ARR background music is first-rate in a few crucial sequences. Overall, Raayan is routine but can be watched once in theatres for a few very well-executed sequences and performances of the actors.

Rajasekar: #Raayan first half - Director @dhanushkraja shines in all the scenes featuring the core family - The Raayan brothers (D, @sundeepkishan and @kalidas700) and their young sister Durga ( @officialdushara). Loved the opening fifteen minutes where the dutiful elder brother Kaathavarayan (D) becomes The Godfather for the entire family! Intermission sequence is a rage 💥. D has quite neatly packaged the first half by giving solid roles for Sundeep(who is very impressive), Kalidass, Dushara too get a meaty part along with Aparna Balamurali. Movie Tamil: #Raayan First Half Review & Rating The first half of "Raayan" is a gripping and intense experience. #Dhanush excels both as an actor and director, delivering a compelling narrative that keeps the audience hooked from the beginning. The storyline is strong, and the character development is impressive. #SundeepKishan's performance is a standout, adding depth and energy to the film.

The pacing is tight, blending mass appeal with engaging storytelling. With well-crafted scenes and powerful performances, the first half of "Raayan" sets high expectations for the rest of the film.

Maharaja Movie Review: Nithilan Saminathan’s ‘Maharaja’ has many “wow” moments, but they don’t result in an organic, cohesive narrative

After  Kurangu Bommai  and now  Maharaja , I think we can say that Nithilan Saminathan is a plot-based filmmaker – as opposed to a character-based filmmaker. This is not to say that a film that depends on plot cannot have solid character arcs, or that a character-based drama does not need a plot. But Nithilan’s films are so intricately constructed that surprise is everything to him, and this “big reveal” is attained by construction and contrivance meant to shock the audience. In  Kurangu Bommai , this technique of hiding information and slowly revealing just what needs to be revealed worked relatively well. And – strangely, for that plot-based movie – it was the relationship between the characters played by Bharathiraja and PL Thenappan that gave the film its soul. That big monologue by the Bharathiraja character – that was everything. It established a friendship that defined the whole movie, from the breakup of an alliance at the beginning to the villain’s plight at the end.

There is no such through-line in  Maharaja . The story is generic, and so are the events and the characters and their motivations. Things happen with such mechanical precision that the emotional impact is muted. Take the scene where a bunch of students are taken for a sports camp by their teacher (Mamta Mohandas). After the trip, when the bus drops each child off, the teacher does not check to see if a parent or guardian is there to receive the child and take them home safely. The child is dropped off, the teacher says bye, and the bus takes off. Because if this “construction” did not happen, then the story could not be set in motion. Take another scene, towards the end, where a cop (Natty Subramanian) gives us a shock. As a singular moment, it is super-effective – but how much better it would have been had we seen some of this cop’s work in arriving at that conclusion. At several points, it appears that connective-tissue moments or scenes have been cut off.

Vijay Sethupathi, in his 50th film, plays a barber named Maharaja. The sense of wealth is there in other names, too: Selvam, Thangam, Dhana, and especially, Lakshmi. Now, who is Lakshmi? The trailer kept us guessing, but the film gives away this plot point fairly early on. We know that Maharaja has a deeper motive than what he lets on, and these bursts of surprises are what keep us invested in the movie. There are many stunning “plot” points: the bit about the re-enactment of a crime, the reveal about a young girl, the scene where Maharaja sets out to do something good but his intent is foiled by cops, the big reveal behind the story Maharaja narrates to the cop, the shock that we are being manipulated by a different timeline… This is certainly a film that has been thought through. But these individual “wow” moments do not come together organically, cohesively. They exist as individual “wow” moments.

Perhaps Nithilan’s films may work better with smaller, tighter running times.  Kurangu Bommai  was barely an hour and forty-five minutes, and yet, barring the love angle, everything clicked.  Maharaja  is almost thirty minutes longer, and the padding shows. The Bharathiraja scenes are redundant. The police station scenes with Kalki Raja as a comic criminal are redundant. The surreal scenes with a snake are redundant. (And anyway, this kind of narrative is too mechanical for surreal asides.) The two scenes where Maharaja shows his superhuman strength – at a school, at a police station – are redundant. He is a typical, traditional hero in this typical, traditional revenge story, and this touch adds nothing to the character. The endless slaps Maharaja receives – again, redundant. Or let me rephrase that. Had this been a more emotional narrative, Maharaja’s series of humiliations would be a way to tell us what he is willing to bear in order to get what he wants. But since he has already been established as superhuman, this attempt to reduce him to a common man doesn’t work.

Vijay Sethupathi works. There is an early scene where he is stunned by a tragedy. It is such a bizarre and random event that he stands frozen in shock, and a second later, a single tear rolls down his cheek. It is a cold character in a cold movie, and we get an appropriately cold performance. But Anurag Kashyap, as the villain, does not work. The character is introduced way too late, and the scenes with his wife (Abhirami) do not define the man in any way. It is too early to say this, but character-writing may not be Nithilan’s strong point. When a rape survivor says she will stay strong, it sounds more like a message to the audience than something that comes through the character’s journey after the trauma   Maharaja  is certainly watchable. Even if the first half tests your patience, the second half – especially after that timeline shocker – has its rewards. But I felt the same about this movie as I did after watching  Garudan . It’s a great story, but the screenplay needed to have supported it in a much better way.

Andhagan X Review: Prashanth And Simran Starrer Promises Thrills And Twists In A Gripping Crime Drama

Andhagan X Review: Andhagan is a Tamil crime thriller directed by Thiagarajan, who co-wrote the screenplay with Pattukkottai Prabakar, and produced by Staar Movies. The film features Prashanth in the lead role, with an ensemble cast including Simran, Priya Anand, Karthik, Samuthirakani, Urvashi, Yogi Babu, K. S. Ravikumar, Vanitha Vijayakumar, and Manobala. A remake of the 2018 Hindi film Andhadhun, the story revolves around a blind pianist who unknowingly becomes involved in a murder.

In 2019, Thiagarajan acquired the remake rights for Andhadhun, with Mohan Raja initially set to direct the project in 2020. However, Raja departed, and J.J. Fredrick briefly took over before Thiagarajan assumed directorial duties. Principal photography began in March 2021, primarily in Chennai, and concluded in November 2022. The film's music is composed by Santhosh Narayanan, with Ravi Yadav as the cinematographer and Sathish Suriya handling the editing.

Andhagan was released in theatres on August 9, 2024, after facing production delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The cast of Andhagan features Prashanth as Krish, Simran as Simi, and Priya Anand as Julie. The ensemble also includes Karthik as the actor, Samuthirakani as Manohar, and Urvashi as Sarasu. Yogi Babu plays Murali, K. S. Ravikumar appears as Dr. Sami, and Vanitha Vijayakumar takes on the role of Revolver Lalitha. Andhagan Review : மீண்டும் டாப் ஸ்டாராக கம்பேக் கொடுத்தாரா பிரசாந்த்? அந்தகன் படத்தின் விமர்சனம் இதோ

தியாகராஜன் இயக்கத்தில் பிரசாந்த் ஹீரோவாக நடித்துள்ள அந்தகன் திரைப்படம் இன்று திரையரங்குகளில் ரிலீஸ் ஆகி உள்ள நிலையில், அதன் விமர்சனத்தை பார்க்கலாம்.

டாப் ஸ்டார் பிரசாந்த் நீண்ட இடைவெளிக்கு பின்னர் ஹீரோவாக நடித்துள்ள திரைப்படம் அந்தகன். இப்படத்தை அவரின் தந்தை தியாகராஜன் இயக்கி உள்ளார். இப்படத்தில் பிரசாந்த் உடன் பிரியா ஆனந்த், சிம்ரன், வனிதா விஜயகுமார், கே.எஸ்.ரவிக்குமார், யோகிபாபு, சமுத்திரக்கனி, நவரச நாயகன் கார்த்திக் என மிகப்பெரிய நட்சத்திர பட்டாளமே நடித்துள்ளது. அந்தகன் படத்திற்கு சந்தோஷ் நாராயணன் இசையமைத்து உள்ளார்.

பாலிவுட்டில் ஆயுஷ்மான் குரானா நடிப்பில் வெளியாகி பிளாக்பஸ்டர் ஹிட்டான அந்தாதூண் திரைப்படத்தின் தமிழ் ரீமேக் தான் இந்த அந்தகன் திரைப்படம். ஸ்ரீராம் ராகவன் என்பவர் தான் இந்தியில் இப்படத்தை இயக்கி இருந்தார். இப்படம் பாலிவுட்டில் சக்கைப்போடு போட்டதோடு, இப்படத்திற்கு சிறந்த திரைக்கதை, சிறந்த படம், சிறந்த நடிகர் ஆகிய மூன்று தேசிய விருதுகளையும் வென்று அசத்தியது.

இதையும் படியுங்கள்...  அந்தகன் முதல் மின்மினி வரை.. இந்த வாரம் தியேட்டர் மற்றும் OTT ரிலீசுக்காக வரிசைகட்டி நிற்கும் படங்களின் லிஸ்ட்

இப்படத்தின் கதையை பொறுத்தவரை, பார்வையற்றவராக இருக்கும் படத்தின் நாயகன் எப்படியாவது லண்டன் சென்று மிகப் பெரிய பியானோ கலைஞனாக வேண்டும் என ஆசைப்படுகிறார். அதற்கு ஏற்றார் போல ஒரு விபத்தின் மூலம் அவருக்கு காதலி கிடைக்கிறாள். காதலி வந்த பின் அவரது வாழ்வில் நடக்கக்கூடிய அடுத்தடுத்த சம்பவங்கள் தான் படமே. சிம்பிளான கதையாக இருந்தாலும் அதை தன்னுடைய விறுவிறுப்பான திரைக்கதையால் பிரம்மிப்பூட்டி இருந்தார் ஸ்ரீராம் ராகவன். அதே பிரம்மிப்பை தமிழிலும் ஏற்படுத்தினார்களா என்பதை பொறுத்திருந்து பார்ப்போம். அந்தகன் படம் பார்த்த ரசிகர்கள் எக்ஸ் தளத்தில் தங்கள் விமர்சனத்தை பதிவிட்டு வருகின்றனர். அதன் தொகுப்பை பார்க்கலாம்.

அந்தகன் அந்தாதூன் படத்தோட சிறந்த ரீமேக்கா இருக்கு. பிரசாந்த் சாரிமிங்காக இருக்கிறார், சிறப்பாகவும் நடித்திருக்கிறார். சிம்ரன் பர்பார்மன்ஸ் செம்ம. சந்தோஷ் நாராயணன் தான் படத்தோட ரெண்டாவது ஹீரோ என பதிவிட்டுள்ளார்.

அந்தாதூன் படம் பார்க்கும்போது கிடைத்த திகில் மற்றும் இனிமையான தருணங்களை அந்தகன் படத்திலும் வெற்றிகரமாக கொடுத்துள்ளனர். பிரசாந்தின் நடிப்பு டாப் கிளாஸ். சஸ்பென்ஸ் நிறைந்த கதைக்களம் என்பதால் கண்டிப்பாக பார்க்கலாம் என குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.

அந்தகன் படம் மெரிட்டில் பாஸ் பண்ணி இருக்கிறது. இது ரீமேக் படமாக இருந்தாலும் தமிழ் ஆடியன்ஸுக்கு தேவையானவற்றையும் சேர்த்து கொடுத்துள்ளனர். பிரசாந்தின் நடிப்பு அருமை வாழ்த்துக்கள் என பாராட்டி பதிவிட்டுள்ளார்.

துவண்டு போய் கிடந்த தமிழ் சினிமாவை காப்பாற்ற அந்தகன் வந்துவிட்டதாக நெட்டிசன் ஒருவர் பதிவிட்டுள்ளார்.

'Minmini' Review: Halitha Shameem's film lacks depth

Director Halitha Shameem is a promising voice in Tamil cinema, thanks to films like 'Poovarasam Peepee' and 'Sillu Karupatti'. For her, 'Minmini' is an ambitious attempt. She filmed the movie over eight years so she could capture the growth of the actors needed for the film. Naturally, this aspect intrigued a section of the audience. Did 'Minmini' live up to the expectations? Let's find out.

'Minimini' begins with visuals of the charming Pari Mukhilan (played by Gaurav Kaalai). In his residential school, he is a sportsperson who brings medals and glory. So much so, that teachers are okay with him not doing well academically. Enter Sabari Karthikeyan (played by Praveen Kishore), who is a chess player, a wonderful artist and a bright student. While Pari bullies new joinee Sabari, they also build a love-hate relationship over the next few months. However, an untoward incident pushes Sabari into depression.

Parallelly, we see Esther Anil (Praveenah), who is recuperating from a heart transplant. How Pari, Sabari and Praveenah's interconnected lives form the rest of the story.

Director Halitha Shameem's films are closer to reality. Be it 'Poovarasam Peepee', 'Sillu Karupatti' or 'Aelay', her films champion ordinary people and see the beauty in them. However, her latest offering 'Minmini' does not fit into this category. The film fails to connect right from the first frame. When she establishes Pari's character, we get a bunch of disjointed scenes which jump from one situation to another. These portions show Pari as a bully, and he doesn't get reprimanded by anyone.

For major portions of the film, we don't see the story moving. It concentrates more on the characters than on their journey. The second half of 'Minmini' shows Sabari and Praveenah riding to the Himalayas while discovering themselves. Sabari doesn't recognise Praveenah despite them being classmates. However, as riders, they go through the journey. It is Pari who connects them. While Praveenah knows this, Sabari doesn't. All the film needs is for the two characters to open up to each other.

However, Halitha Shameem's screenplay doesn't let them open up to each other. They share their secrets in installments, which hampers the progress of the story. Also, the dialogues in 'Minimini' are too philosophical and remind one of those spiritual books suggested by the influencers.

'Minimini' concentrates only on these prime characters. We don't know who Sabari and Praveenah's parents are and how they allow them to go on solo rides. Sabari is clearly depressed for years, but we don't get to know if his parents tried to help him or not. Similarly, Praveenah, despite getting major surgery done, travels alone at high altitudes, where her body is put to the utmost test. Some of these glaring errors make 'Minmini' an unsatisfying watch.

That said, 'Minmini's' strongest asset is the performances of the lead actors, played by Praveen Kishore, Gaurav Kaalai and Esther Anil. We see them growing up from their school days to their 20s. It also raises questions about whether the impact would be the same if a different set of actors played their grown-up versions.

AR Rahman's daughter, Khatija, makes a great debut as a composer. Her background score is subtle in many places and moves along with the story. Cinematographer Manoj Paramahamsa, who also doubled up as a producer, captured the landscape of the Himalayan mountain range in its glory. It almost makes you want to go on a trip.

'Minmini' is director Halitha Shameem's weakest script yet. However, it is saved by the performances and technical finesse. 2 out of 5 stars for 'Minmini'.
