This on-campus program is a rigorous 3-week immersion into how the electrochemical and circuit activity of the brain create sensation, perception, and behaviors. During your final week, you will work on a team presentation that will be presented to the entire class.

7. Clinical Neuroscience Immersion Experience (CNI-X)

If you’re primarily interested in medicine, this is a great pick for you. This 10-day program provides you with basic exposure to the study of neuroscience, psychiatry, and brain science in addition to a potential chance to finish a cooperative capstone project. You’ll get the chance to work with Stanford professors and researchers and engage in exciting and cutting-edge research in the standards of neuroscience, clinical neuropsychiatry, and other areas within neuroscience research. In addition to participating in interactive lectures, you would also work in small teams to design solutions to pressing issues related to psychiatry, psychology, and neuroscience. 

6. Research Experience for High School Students (REHS)

Hosting institution: University of California, San Diego

Format: In-person (San Diego, CA)

Although it’s billed as a program to increase awareness of computational science, quite a few of the available mentor projects focus on the study of neurological disorders such as autism and Alzheimer’s and the modeling of neurons. During this 8-week volunteer program, you will gain exposure to career options, hands-on computational experience, work readiness skills, and mentoring by computational research scientists. You'll take part in regular lab meetings and participate in group discussions. At the end of the program, you will create a scientific poster highlighting your research and future career goals. 

5. Research in Science & Engineering (RISE) Practicum Track

Hosting institution: Boston University

Cost: Paid a stipend of $1,500

Format: In-person (Boston, MA)

Application deadline: February 1st

If you want to really hone your research skills in a lab setting before you get to college, this 6-week computational neurobiology program gives you the chance to conduct it in a structured lab setting. Your lab work will be combined with lectures and workshops on the scientific process, research ethics, reading a research paper, presenting scientific research, and networking in the scientific community. You’ll also tour biotech companies in the Boston area and get a behind-the-scenes look at how they operate.

4. Secondary School Program

Hosting institution: Harvard University

Cost: $3,600–$13,750

Format: In person (Cambridge, MA)

This rigorous 7-week academic program gives you a true feel for college and the field of neurobiology. You can choose from courses such as Neuroinvesting: Neuroscience and Financial Decision Making, Mind, and Brain: Themes in the History of Neuroscience, Becoming a Brain Scientist: Neuroscience and Psychology Research, and more. Needless to say, Harvard is a prestigious institution, and you will be taking real college courses taught by distinguished Harvard professors and visiting faculty. You will also receive college credit. 

3. Summer College Immersion Program (SCIP)

Hosting institution: UCLA

Cost: $3,000-$5,000

Format: In person (Los Angeles, CA)

While a competitive program with an acceptance rate around 15-20%, it’s a great opportunity for you to experience college life, lectures, workshops, and seminars at a top school. For 6 weeks, you’ll have access to courses such as Brain Made Simple: Neuroscience for 21st Century, Introduction to Neuroscience Methods: Art and Science of Studying Brain, Introduction to Functional Anatomy of Central Nervous System, among others. A co-curricular component teaches useful skills to help with college admissions and academic life. Cost depends on the number of classes taken.

2. Summer Research Internship

Hosting institution: Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience (MPFI)

Cost: Full-time paid internship

Format: In-person (Jupiter, FL)

Though we’re aware the eligible students for this program is smaller than most (you must be a junior or senior at a Palm Beach County or Martin County high school in Florida), it’s a great learning experience and students are fully compensated for their work. For 6 weeks, you will work directly with MPFI researchers on active projects doing “wet lab” techniques such as genetic engineering, microbiology preparations, histological staining, and microscopy.

BRAINYAC is bit of a niche neuroscience program based solely in New York City, but it provides exceptional mentorship at no cost to the student. The Zuckerman Institute’s Brain Research Apprenticeships offers New York City high-school students a hands-on summer research experience in a Columbia laboratory. Each student is matched with a Columbia neuroscientist who guides the student through a research project for 7 weeks. Participants learn key skills required to work in a research environment, and the experience looks great on a college application.

Undergraduate Neuroscience Research and Thesis Neuro Research Guide

Neuro research guide, guide to choosing a neuroscience research lab, part 1: what factors to consider when joining a lab..

There are hundreds of Harvard affiliated labs, and all of them are different. Below, we have distilled those differences into several important categories to consider as you make your choice. The overarching goal is to help you choose a lab that will foster your development as a scientist.

Research Topic. Students often feel that the research topic is the decisive factor. For example, you may have a topic that you are already passionate about ( e.g., Alzheimer’s Disease, Traumatic Brain Injury, or Free Will). While this pre-existing interest can be a great motivator, consider the following: over three semesters and one summer, you will spend > 750 hours in the lab! For that much time, we think the priority should be finding a great lab environment with supportive mentors.

  • False! A topic isn’t usually exciting until you learn more about it. We find that once students realize what questions are being asked, what the debates are in this area, and what real-world implications the topic has, what methods are being used/developed, they quickly become passionate about their work.
  • False! Medical and graduate schools are evaluating your lab experiences in two major ways: First, they want evidence of your scientific development in the lab, including your independence in designing experiments/analyzing data and your understanding of your research topic. Second, they want to see an authentic, personalized, positive letter from your faculty mentor detailing your drive, independence, attention to detail, collegiality, etc .

Size of the lab. The size of the lab is not always, but very often, a predictor of student success. Higher visibility labs tend to be big (>20 people). Although they are publishing great papers, the environment may not be ideal for undergrads. Why? In bigger labs, it is harder to get face time with the faculty mentor. Moreover, each daily supervisor (post doc or grad student) may have several undergraduates working with them or be consumed with their own work. Students can feel lost when they do not get enough mentoring and attention. Another peril of working for ‘rockstar’ faculty is that projects may be aiming for publication in Nature, Science, or Cell, which can take more than 5 years of full-time teamwork … when things go right. As such, students are often a small part of a bigger, longer project (a ‘cog in the machine’). Their role is often more of a technical one with less control, thought, or creativity in the experimental design and therefore less scientific development and growth.

In spite of the drawbacks, some students prefer to work on high visibility projects in big labs. That is fine but be aware that these projects can lead to lower thesis evaluation grades because faculty evaluators look for evidence that the student has put independent thought and individual work into the thesis.

Independence and Project Type. It is daunting to be responsible for your own research project’s success or failure, especially when you are just starting out in science. Yet, this really is the best way to learn how to do science. Having to make decisions about what experiment to do or how to analyze your work requires a deep understanding of your research area. Large, team projects can be fun, but students often grow and learn more from small projects where they can make decisions.

Typically, projects that are small in scope (short term) work best, so you can learn from your mistakes and get feedback on your results within weeks to reconfigure if need be. Working more independently on a project also gives you more control of your data, rather than being handed data from someone else and not having any influence on how or why the experiments were done.

Mentoring. Arguably the most important aspect of your lab experience is your direct mentor. Try to meet your direct mentor before signing up with a lab. You want to make sure that they are invested in your success: meaning, 1) they has time to meet with your regularly, they have reasonable demands on your time (15 hours or less per week during the term), and they can communicate clearly with you.

Whatever lab you’re in, be sure to schedule face time with the faculty mentor (alone or with your daily supervisor) at least once per month. This will help you forge a connection to the lab head and be part of conversations that can influence your study design and color the interpretation of your results. You should also make an effort to attend lab meeting to learn about other projects and develop your critical thinking/questioning skills.

Commute/ Location. It might seem harrowing, but commuting to a lab is very possible. The free M2 shuttle can get you to the Longwood/hospital area in about 30 minutes (outside of rush hour times and extreme weather). The MBTA can get you to MGH, MIT, Broad Institute just as quickly. As long as you can arrange your schedule to have big blocks of consecutive lab time (3 hours), the commute will only be a fraction of your dedicated lab time.

The good news, if you don’t want to commute, is that labs closer to Cambridge typically have more experience working with undergrads. This often translates into a better mentoring culture for students. All things being equal, we recommend you start looking for a lab on campus (Biolabs, NW Building, William James). If you don’t find a good fit there, consider labs at the Medical School that are affiliated with the Program for Neuroscience . If you still aren’t satisfied, you can extend your search to other Harvard-affiliated hospitals or centers (MGH, Children’s Hospital, Beth Israel, Brigham and Women’s, McLean, etc .)

Part 2: Questions to ask before joining a lab.

Here is a list of potential questions to ask the lab director when you meet to talk about joining a lab:

  • Typically, students meet with the faculty mentor two or three times per semester. Its great if it is more frequently, but it should not be less.
  • Typically, students work with a grad student or a post-doc. They often meet every time the student comes to lab (at least at the beginning) and communicate informally by email. Since they play a big role in mentoring you, it is always a good idea to meet them before joining.
  • Student projects are most rewarding when students are involved in experimental design and all aspects of data analysis. It gives the student more ownership and control of the project, which very often creates a better environment to learn to do science.
  • Longer term experiments (more than a year) are usually team-projects where students don’t have much influence or control of the project.
  • While every student is different, other undergrads in the lab can usually tell you what kind of experience to expect. (Laura and Ryan can give you feedback on labs students have worked in as well in case you want an additional opinion.)
  • Lab meetings can be a great way to assess the group dynamics and lab culture to make sure it feels like a comfortable and stimulating environment for you.
  • Typically, students should expect to spend 5-10 hrs/week if they are volunteering in the lab during the semester, or 10-15 hrs/week if they are enrolled in research for credit (Neuro 91). Most labs expect students spend one summer working full-time in the lab (often before senior year) if they are serious about a thesis or a career in research after graduation.
  • This varies by lab: sometimes students will choose among several options. Sometimes there might only be one project that needs additional help (or has an available mentor). Occasionally, faculty mentors want students to develop their own project idea! You just don’t know until you ask.

Scientists uncover new mechanism of 'forgetting' in brain neurons that could inform Parkinson's treatment

Investigating the molecular mechanisms of 'forgetting'

Northwestern Medicine investigators have uncovered a new way in which neurons in the brain "forget" associations that help guide behavior and habits, according to a study published in Cell Reports .

In addition to shedding light on basic brain mechanisms, the findings could also prove useful in treating Parkinson's disease, said D. James Surmeier, Ph.D., the Nathan Smith Davis Professor and chair of Neuroscience, who was senior author of the study.

In the study, Surmeier and a team of Northwestern Medicine scientists set out to understand how spiny projection neurons —the principal neurons in the striatum, a key part of the brain circuitry controlling decision making—are affected by neuronal plasticity, which is critical to the brain's ability to change and adapt over time in response to life experiences.

"Some years ago, we discovered a novel form of long-term synaptic depression in spiny projection neurons that was triggered by a gaseous messenger called nitric oxide," Surmeier said. "The stratum is one of the few places in the brain that has very high levels of the signaling molecules that respond to nitric oxide. We wanted to get a better understanding of the role that form of plasticity played in controlling behavior."

First, investigators studied an early step in the biochemical cascade triggered by nitric oxide—the metabolism of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). They found that cGMP in spiny projection neurons was degraded by an enzyme (PDE1) that was turned on when neurons were active and letting calcium come into them.

They went on to find that the calcium activating PDE1 was coming through a specific type of membrane channel (Ca v 1.3 channel). This meant that the long-term depression of synapses triggered by nitric oxide was blocked in parts of the neuron that were actively processing information, in contrast to parts that were inactive.

This finding reveals how striatal spiny projection neurons operate on a "use it or lose it" basis, weakening synapses that were not actively involved in controlling behavior, Surmeier said.

"All of the commonly described forms of synaptic plasticity are dependent upon activity," Surmeier said. "No one to our knowledge has described a form of synaptic plasticity that was enabled by inactivity at specific locations in a neuron."

Next, investigators sought to understand this type of synaptic depression in the context of Parkinson's disease.

In a mouse model of Parkinson's disease, investigators observed that nitric oxide signaling and the synaptic depression it controlled was significantly diminished. However, by rebalancing levels of two neurotransmitters that are disrupted in Parkinson's disease—dopamine and acetylcholine—investigators were able to restore nitric oxide signaling and this form of synaptic plasticity, according to the findings.

While more work is needed, the results suggest that nitric-oxide dependent synaptic depression could be a potential therapeutic target for Parkinson's, Surmeier said.

"We found that the generation of nitric oxide was dependent upon reestablishing a balance between dopaminergic and cholinergic signaling," Surmeier said. "Now, the question is how restoring nitric oxide signaling might fix what goes wrong in the striatum of Parkinson's disease patients."

Moving forward, Surmeier and his collaborators will continue to study the mechanisms of neuronal plasticity using cutting-edge techniques, he said.

"One of the things that we're particularly excited about is that the tools we have to monitor and manipulate brain circuits has rapidly expanded, deepening our understanding of how Parkinson's disease affects the brain and giving us strategies for reversing the changes in circuitry that cause symptoms," he said.

"We are also excited about new tools to manipulate nitric oxide signaling being developed by the Silverman lab here at NU."

Fact-checking warnings from Democrats about Project 2025 and Donald Trump

Project 2025 has a starring role in this week’s Democratic National Convention.

And it was front and center on Night 1.

“This is Project 2025,” Michigan state Sen. Mallory McMorrow, D-Royal Oak, said as she laid a hardbound copy of the 900-page document on the lectern. “Over the next four nights, you are going to hear a lot about what is in this 900-page document. Why? Because this is the Republican blueprint for a second Trump term.”

Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, has warned Americans about “Trump’s Project 2025” agenda — even though former President Donald Trump doesn’t claim the conservative presidential transition document.

“Donald Trump wants to take our country backward,” Harris said July 23 in Milwaukee. “He and his extreme Project 2025 agenda will weaken the middle class. Like, we know we got to take this seriously, and can you believe they put that thing in writing?”

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Harris’ running mate, has joined in on the talking point.

“Don’t believe (Trump) when he’s playing dumb about this Project 2025. He knows exactly what it’ll do,” Walz said Aug. 9 in Glendale, Arizona.

Trump’s campaign has worked to build distance from the project, which the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, led with contributions from dozens of conservative groups.

Much of the plan calls for extensive executive-branch overhauls and draws on both long-standing conservative principles, such as tax cuts, and more recent culture war issues. It lays out recommendations for disbanding the Commerce and Education departments, eliminating certain climate protections and consolidating more power to the president.

Project 2025 offers a sweeping vision for a Republican-led executive branch, and some of its policies mirror Trump’s 2024 agenda, But Harris and her presidential campaign have at times gone too far in describing what the project calls for and how closely the plans overlap with Trump’s campaign.

PolitiFact researched Harris’ warnings about how the plan would affect reproductive rights, federal entitlement programs and education, just as we did for President Joe Biden’s Project 2025 rhetoric. Here’s what the project does and doesn’t call for, and how it squares with Trump’s positions.

Are Trump and Project 2025 connected?

To distance himself from Project 2025 amid the Democratic attacks, Trump wrote on Truth Social that he “knows nothing” about it and has “no idea” who is in charge of it. (CNN identified at least 140 former advisers from the Trump administration who have been involved.)

The Heritage Foundation sought contributions from more than 100 conservative organizations for its policy vision for the next Republican presidency, which was published in 2023.

Project 2025 is now winding down some of its policy operations, and director Paul Dans, a former Trump administration official, is stepping down, The Washington Post reported July 30. Trump campaign managers Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita denounced the document.

However, Project 2025 contributors include a number of high-ranking officials from Trump’s first administration, including former White House adviser Peter Navarro and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson.

A recently released recording of Russell Vought, a Project 2025 author and the former director of Trump’s Office of Management and Budget, showed Vought saying Trump’s “very supportive of what we do.” He said Trump was only distancing himself because Democrats were making a bogeyman out of the document.

Project 2025 wouldn’t ban abortion outright, but would curtail access

The Harris campaign shared a graphic on X that claimed “Trump’s Project 2025 plan for workers” would “go after birth control and ban abortion nationwide.”

The plan doesn’t call to ban abortion nationwide, though its recommendations could curtail some contraceptives and limit abortion access.

What’s known about Trump’s abortion agenda neither lines up with Harris’ description nor Project 2025’s wish list.

Project 2025 says the Department of Health and Human Services Department should “return to being known as the Department of Life by explicitly rejecting the notion that abortion is health care.”

It recommends that the Food and Drug Administration reverse its 2000 approval of mifepristone, the first pill taken in a two-drug regimen for a medication abortion. Medication is the most common form of abortion in the U.S. — accounting for around 63 percent in 2023.

If mifepristone were to remain approved, Project 2025 recommends new rules, such as cutting its use from 10 weeks into pregnancy to seven. It would have to be provided to patients in person — part of the group’s efforts to limit access to the drug by mail. In June, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected a legal challenge to mifepristone’s FDA approval over procedural grounds.

WATCH: Trump’s plans for health care and reproductive rights if he returns to White House The manual also calls for the Justice Department to enforce the 1873 Comstock Act on mifepristone, which bans the mailing of “obscene” materials. Abortion access supporters fear that a strict interpretation of the law could go further to ban mailing the materials used in procedural abortions, such as surgical instruments and equipment.

The plan proposes withholding federal money from states that don’t report to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention how many abortions take place within their borders. The plan also would prohibit abortion providers, such as Planned Parenthood, from receiving Medicaid funds. It also calls for the Department of Health and Human Services to ensure that the training of medical professionals, including doctors and nurses, omits abortion training.

The document says some forms of emergency contraception — particularly Ella, a pill that can be taken within five days of unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy — should be excluded from no-cost coverage. The Affordable Care Act requires most private health insurers to cover recommended preventive services, which involves a range of birth control methods, including emergency contraception.

Trump has recently said states should decide abortion regulations and that he wouldn’t block access to contraceptives. Trump said during his June 27 debate with Biden that he wouldn’t ban mifepristone after the Supreme Court “approved” it. But the court rejected the lawsuit based on standing, not the case’s merits. He has not weighed in on the Comstock Act or said whether he supports it being used to block abortion medication, or other kinds of abortions.

Project 2025 doesn’t call for cutting Social Security, but proposes some changes to Medicare

“When you read (Project 2025),” Harris told a crowd July 23 in Wisconsin, “you will see, Donald Trump intends to cut Social Security and Medicare.”

The Project 2025 document does not call for Social Security cuts. None of its 10 references to Social Security addresses plans for cutting the program.

Harris also misleads about Trump’s Social Security views.

In his earlier campaigns and before he was a politician, Trump said about a half-dozen times that he’s open to major overhauls of Social Security, including cuts and privatization. More recently, in a March 2024 CNBC interview, Trump said of entitlement programs such as Social Security, “There’s a lot you can do in terms of entitlements, in terms of cutting.” However, he quickly walked that statement back, and his CNBC comment stands at odds with essentially everything else Trump has said during the 2024 presidential campaign.

Trump’s campaign website says that not “a single penny” should be cut from Social Security. We rated Harris’ claim that Trump intends to cut Social Security Mostly False.

Project 2025 does propose changes to Medicare, including making Medicare Advantage, the private insurance offering in Medicare, the “default” enrollment option. Unlike Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage plans have provider networks and can also require prior authorization, meaning that the plan can approve or deny certain services. Original Medicare plans don’t have prior authorization requirements.

The manual also calls for repealing health policies enacted under Biden, such as the Inflation Reduction Act. The law enabled Medicare to negotiate with drugmakers for the first time in history, and recently resulted in an agreement with drug companies to lower the prices of 10 expensive prescriptions for Medicare enrollees.

Trump, however, has said repeatedly during the 2024 presidential campaign that he will not cut Medicare.

Project 2025 would eliminate the Education Department, which Trump supports

The Harris campaign said Project 2025 would “eliminate the U.S. Department of Education” — and that’s accurate. Project 2025 says federal education policy “should be limited and, ultimately, the federal Department of Education should be eliminated.” The plan scales back the federal government’s role in education policy and devolves the functions that remain to other agencies.

Aside from eliminating the department, the project also proposes scrapping the Biden administration’s Title IX revision, which prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It also would let states opt out of federal education programs and calls for passing a federal parents’ bill of rights similar to ones passed in some Republican-led state legislatures.

Republicans, including Trump, have pledged to close the department, which gained its status in 1979 within Democratic President Jimmy Carter’s presidential Cabinet.

In one of his Agenda 47 policy videos, Trump promised to close the department and “to send all education work and needs back to the states.” Eliminating the department would have to go through Congress.

What Project 2025, Trump would do on overtime pay

In the graphic, the Harris campaign says Project 2025 allows “employers to stop paying workers for overtime work.”

The plan doesn’t call for banning overtime wages. It recommends changes to some Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, regulations and to overtime rules. Some changes, if enacted, could result in some people losing overtime protections, experts told us.

The document proposes that the Labor Department maintain an overtime threshold “that does not punish businesses in lower-cost regions (e.g., the southeast United States).” This threshold is the amount of money executive, administrative or professional employees need to make for an employer to exempt them from overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

In 2019, the Trump’s administration finalized a rule that expanded overtime pay eligibility to most salaried workers earning less than about $35,568, which it said made about 1.3 million more workers eligible for overtime pay. The Trump-era threshold is high enough to cover most line workers in lower-cost regions, Project 2025 said.

The Biden administration raised that threshold to $43,888 beginning July 1, and that will rise to $58,656 on Jan. 1, 2025. That would grant overtime eligibility to about 4 million workers, the Labor Department said.

It’s unclear how many workers Project 2025’s proposal to return to the Trump-era overtime threshold in some parts of the country would affect, but experts said some would presumably lose the right to overtime wages.

Other overtime proposals in Project 2025’s plan include allowing some workers to choose to accumulate paid time off instead of overtime pay, or to work more hours in one week and fewer in the next, rather than receive overtime.

Trump’s past with overtime pay is complicated. In 2016, the Obama administration said it would raise the overtime to salaried workers earning less than $47,476 a year, about double the exemption level set in 2004 of $23,660 a year.

But when a judge blocked the Obama rule, the Trump administration didn’t challenge the court ruling. Instead it set its own overtime threshold, which raised the amount, but by less than Obama.

Project 2025, organized by the Heritage Foundation,  extensively  outlines potential approaches to governance for the next would-be Republican president, including  replacing  federal employees with extremists and Trump loyalists and attacking  LGBTQ rights ,  abortion ,  contraception , and  labor unions . Project 2025 describes extreme policies like  dismantling the federal agency that tracks hurricanes ,  upending Medicare as we know it ,  enacting inflationary tariff policies , and  dramatically raising taxes on everyday Americans .

Trump has  deep ties  to Project 2025, despite attempts by Trump and his allies to  distance  himself. Just days ago, an undercover video  revealed  Project 2025 architect Russ Vought highlighting Trump's ties to Project 2025 and downplaying the former president distancing himself, candidly explaining that Trump is just “running against the brand” of Project 2025 but that, “he’s very supportive of what we do.” Heritage Foundation president Kevin Roberts has made  similar   remarks .

The Five Elders and the Government Discovered His Illegal Early Research

Before One Piece 's current timeline , Vegapunk was considered a genius scientist even at an early age, when he designed and built several robotic animals in his lab. His ideas were seemingly endless, but he lacked the funding needed to make them a reality. Eventually, he ate the Nomi Nomi no Mi (literally Brain-Brain Fruit) which allowed him to expand his brain without limit and retain all the knowledge he acquired.

As an adult, Vegapunk worked on the research team MADS, with characters including Judge Vinsmoke, Caesar Clown, Queen and Buckingham Stussy. The other MADS scientists focused on creating weapons, but Vegapunk used his genius intellect to make other inventions that could be used in more peaceful ways, even earning him the coveted Ibel Peace Prize. This put Dr. Vegapunk on the radar of the Five Elders , and when they looked deeper into his research, they deemed him and MADS to be a threat.

Vegapunk's research into One Piece 's Lineage Factor (similar to DNA in the real world) led the Five Elders to shut down the MADS team. Vegapunk remained a resourceful scientist, though, and he saw the shuttering of MADS as an opportunity to continue his quest for knowledge. He knew that the World Government and the Marines would be interested in having someone as intelligent as him working for them — and he also knew they could provide him with the funding he needed to make his more ambitious projects a reality.

Despite Gecko Moria's unbecoming defeat before the time skip, he's been recently brought up in the One Piece story and may now gain some relevance.

After being recruited to work for the World Government following the shutdown of MADS, Vegapunk became a famous scientist renowned for his research into Devil Fruits . He helped the Marines in their battle against One Piece 's pirate crews, developing an encyclopedia of knowledge regarding the world's Devil Fruits and even attempting to replicate their powers through artificial means.

Vegapunk was also responsible for the miraculous discovery of Seastone and its ability to counteract a Devil Fruit user's powers. This breakthrough allowed the Marines and the World Government to use the rare mineral in the creation of their weapons, including blades, spears, and even restraints like handcuffs and cages.

Vegapunk's Seastone research even allowed the Marines to line their battleships with the mineral, granting them safe passage through the Calm Belt without disturbing the monstrous Sea Kings. He would continue to use his genius for further scientific advancement, trying to make the world a better place, even if he was forced to work for evil people as a means to an end.

Throughout the course of his career, Vegapunk was responsible for many of One Piece 's greatest scientific advancements. His work went well beyond the Seastone and Devil Fuit research that he did for the Marines, and he was able to use The Five Elders' funding to create many remarkable projects.

Vegapunk had the idea of island-wide climate control, essentially allowing an entire island to have its weather manipulated and regulated so that it could be more habitable . The idea was completed successfully on Egghead, with Vegapunk wanting to expand upon the initial idea and complete further research into the concept of total weather control.

Vegapunk was also responsible for creating artificial lifeforms; he successfully made two artificial dragons that guarded Punk Hazard. He was also shown to be doing research into 'Organoids', lab-grown organs meant to be the future of medicine.

The Pacifista and Seraphim Projects Gave the Marines' Superpowered Clones

The Five Elders recognized Vegapunk's genius potential and eventually put him in charge of the SSG — the Special Science Group — responsible for researching and developing advanced weapons for the World Government. After the government disbanded the Seven Warlords, they used the SSG's Pacifista and Seraphim projects to replace the Warlords as one of the Three Great Powers.

The Pacifista came first in Vegapunk's research, with the human weapons being clones of former Warlord and Buccaneer Bartholomew Kuma . Vegapunk was able to enhance the clones, turning them into cyborgs with incredibly augmented powers . While the Pacifista units were strong in their own right, Vegapunk consistently attempted to make them even stronger, eventually creating a new type of clone that was superior.

The Seraphim were based on the Pacifista , built as living weapons of the former Warlords, but also mixed with the Lineage Factor of a Lunarian and augmented with Green Blood that could replicate Devil Fruit powers. This makes the Seraphim an insanely powerful tool in the Five Elders' arsenal, and Vegapunk himself deemed them the "strongest form of humanity".

Vegapunk's thirst for knowledge would ultimately be his undoing, with the Five Elders investigating him on suspicions that he was trying to learn more about the Void Century, which took place 900 to 800 years prior to the current storyline. The World Government deemed any research into the Void Century to be one of the worst crimes possible -- and that is exactly why Vegapunk wanted to uncover the truth behind this dark time in One Piece 's world.

After Cipher Pol agents investigated Vegapunk's research and realized he had been looking into the forbidden knowledge surrounding the Void Century, the Five Elders ordered Vegapunk to be assassinated. With Vegapunk and Luffy both on Egghead, Elder Jaygarcia Saturn saw an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone and ordered a deadly Buster Call on the island.

The rest of the Elders arrived on Egghead and used their own incredible powers to successfully destroy Vegapunk's years of research, setting the world back in the process. Saturn eventually was able to wound Vegapunk, impaling him through the back. As Luffy and the Straw Hats tried to get Vegapunk to safety, the Marine Admiral Kizaru was able to deliver a fatal blow, ending the life of the world's greatest scientist.

One Piece's Buccaneer race has suffered at the hands of the World Government -- but Monkey D. Luffy may soon liberate them.

Knowing that his research into the Void Century was likely to be used against him, Vegapunk recorded a video message and planned for it to be broadcast immediately upon his death. The clip was aired across the entire world, with the public learning all of Vegapunk's research into the Void Century.

Vegapunk was able to expose to the world what he learned about the Great War between Joy Boy and the First Twenty — the monarchs who would go on to found the World Government . He also exposed how the use of Ancient Weapons caused sea levels to rise around the world, and he shared his belief that the Mother Flame that was used to destroy Lulusia would trigger the seas to rise even further. Vegapunk concluded his message by warning the people that the world would sink into the sea soon and that the fate of the world was in the hands of whoever found the One Piece treasure.

The Elders were outraged by Vegapunk's message, and they quickly worked to end the broadcast. Luckily for Vegapunk, many people were still able to hear his message, and countless people were inspired to search for the treasure. With Monkey D. Luffy revealed to be the reincarnation of Joy Boy , Vegapunk's revelations spell trouble for the Five Elders and the rest of the government, and it's very likely that Luffy and the rest of his crew will avenge their fallen friend and continue his mission to see the truth of the Void Century brought to light.

Amid a rising tide of seagrass restoration, Shark Bay locals call for more power to heal their home

From a research vessel bobbing above Shark Bay's crystal clear waters, the world is drawn with two shades of sea green.

The darker paints the region's World Heritage-listed seagrass meadows — the planet's largest such reserve at more than 4,000 square kilometres — and a playground for a diverse cast of marine life.

But where the waves lighten to turquoise, the white sand beneath glinting in the sun, is the underwater equivalent of "scorched earth".

This boundary marks one spot where an extreme heatwave caused ocean temperatures to peak about 5 degrees Celsius above normal during the summer of 2010-11.

The ramifications of the event are well-documented , with more than a quarter of the seagrass helping to sustain Shark Bay wiped clean in a matter of weeks.

Studies have shown the meadow is like a single, decaying organism: a sprawling bed of Posidonia australis clones in gradual decline.

"When the seagrass started dying, the water turned black because the algae had polluted the water, and the sunlight couldn't penetrate through," vessel master Liam Ridgley said.

"[It] took about four or five years for the water to clear up, and once the water eventually cleared out, we realised the devastation that had impacted the ecosystem."

As tour operators at Monkey Mia, 850km north of Perth on the shores of the bay, Liam Ridgley and his father Greg are part of a community-driven movement working to restore the damage.

Aboard their converted trawler, the Norwest Lady, the father-son duo and a team of volunteers have put into practice a method they helped trial alongside a team of Malgana rangers and University of Western Australia (UWA) researchers in 2022.

By laying hessian sacks filled with sand in tidal sub-straits, seagrass seedlings can naturally hook onto the rough surface and take root in the ocean floor.

Since the end of the UWA trial, the Ridgleys independently laid 1,600 sandbags in 2023.

This year, they have laid 2,000, or 10 hectares worth, across various surveyed sites.

"Where there was nothing, there was just barren sand, all of a sudden there was seagrass and fish and crabs all living amongst the sub-strait," Liam Ridgley said.

In spite of the progress, he told the ABC that the process has been deeply frustrating.

The pathways to obtain state government permits are lacking, he said, and funding difficult to secure.

"I started out with extremely large companies … most of the time without any sort of response," Mr Ridgley said.

"It really sets a precedent that not enough is being done by the government and the larger polluters of Australia to protect our ecosystems here."

Traditional owners caring for sea country

He echoed calls for the state and federal governments to show more support for seagrass restoration in Gathaagudu (Shark Bay).

"The government, with its powers, needs to make [the permission process] a lot more streamlined," he said.

Mr McNeair said Tidal Moon has struggled to get permission to scale up seagrass efforts, preventing traditional owners from taking an equitable place in caring for sea country.

"It's been an afterthought to talk to Indigenous people," he said.

"I think it's really important that Indigenous-led businesses and Indigenous-led ranger groups and corporations [are] at the forefront and the start of those discussions, and [are] also involved all the way through to the access and … delivering of those outcomes on the ground."

For Mr McNeair, change should come with a solutions-based and collaborative approach.

"We need to refocus ... into the environmental standards and environmental impact that we have, but also environmental solutions that work towards using local community members and local community groups to actually do that," he said.

"Legislation is an important part of that — the longer these things go out, the less interaction or providing solutions to these issues, the longer we see environment damaged."

The ABC has contacted the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation, and Attractions for comment.

Coming to the table

A recently published paper co-authored by Mr McNeair, Malgana elders, and UWA scientists found that a combination of traditional knowledge and Western science is essential to improve restoration outcomes.

Location is especially crucial, Mr McNeair explained.

Traditional owners fill gaps in digital and satellite imagery with thousands of years of knowledge passed through the generations.

"There is also the connection [of] seagrass to other biodiversity in this area," he said.

"From dolphins to dugongs to turtles … those patterns, movements, populations, have all been [documented] from a scientific aspect, but a lot of that local knowledge and cultural knowledge is very important to gather information."

Dr Elizabeth Sinclair, who helped lead the project, has been involved in seagrass restoration since the heatwave.

She said that while caution remains essential in such an ecologically and culturally sensitive environment, the volume of dialogue between stakeholders needs to be turned up a notch.

"I feel like the best way forward is to literally just get everybody at the table and have a chat and talk about … what our strengths and weaknesses are, what's working, what isn't."

A greater sense of urgency is needed to act now, Dr Sinclair suggested, as it may take decades to see positive and large-scale results.

"Restoration hasn't been done on this on that scale in Australia, I can think of maybe one or two other locations globally where it's been done," she said.

"It's involved a huge number of people, a lot of different organisations, and a sustained effort over 20 to 30 years to make a big difference.

"And there perhaps isn't the right … approval process, I think, for something like this to happen.

"We all just need to sit down at the same place and share our collective thoughts and skills and try to make this happen as a much more coordinated approach."
